i think it would be funny if people occasionally arose from the dead. like if that was a real-life one-in-a-million but well-documented Thing That Sometimes Happens, and the entire legal system around death (laws on inheritance & marriage & murder etc) had to include caveats for the unlikely-but-scientifically-possible event that the dead person in question might spontaneously self-resurrect, even years or decades after death. it would raise so many inconvenient and absurd possibilities

The competing thoughts in my head right now:
1) Imagine what sort of cases are going to make it before SCOTUS to decide by June of next year. Settled law means fuck all at this point. There is no limit to what they might do next, and conservatives are going to be even more eager to get cases that could go in their favor before the court.
They didn't stop at Roe, they won't stop at ending affirmative action, and they won't stop at legalizing anti-queer discrimination. I'm betting my money right now, that by this time next year, at least one of the legal challenges currently being fought against trans healthcare will reach SCOTUS.
2) Less than 7 years ago, one of the most potentially qualified women in American history lost the presidency in spite of having won the popular vote to a man who is easily the least qualified crook to have ever held the office in American history.
Just imagine if we were living in a different timeline where President Hillary Clinton had used her power to appoint three liberal (or at the very least, moderate) Supreme Court Justices. The entire trajectory of this country would currently be different. Abortion rights, affirmative action, and LGBTQ+ rights would've been safe for another generation. But her emails. Elections have consequences. And our electoral system is flawed.
3) The Constitution needs to either be rewritten or drastically amended; the major problem with this is that our current leadership cannot be trusted to do so. It's extremely clear that "we the people" still only means white Christian men.
I'm not actually certain that the United States should exist as a single country anymore...I just find it hard to imagine any alternative. This country truly feels like 50 individual countries badly pretending to be 1...but no longer having even the minimal protections provided by the Constitution would be a nightmare for minorites in red states. And a lot of people would be trapped by that, just as they already are: unable to leave due to finances or disability, or unwilling to leave their family, culture, or history behind.
Either way, abolish the electoral college, and implement term limits for SCOTUS Justices, and I think that the length of no more than 16 years or four presidential terms (as most presidents serve two four year terms) is adequate.
4) This means resistance. And I'm trying to figure out what that looks like. I've mostly been doing this by looking at the past and seeing how my queer and trans predecessors fought back, because none of this shit is new. But this also calls for the question: what else can we do? Are there new ways that we can resist? How do we build a future in a world that looks more like the past everyday?

at long last, I present my headcanon about Luis's education/career timeline + why he kept working for Umbrella while knowing how fucked all of it was
First off there's enough 16 and younger high up Umbrella scientists that it's easy to just accept that shit in the RE world is just Like That and a 12 year old Luis rocking up to enroll in university just makes sense within the logic of the world, but my personal headcanon is way more expansive than that. I like to imagine him actually going to a school operated by Umbrella. The Umbrella boarding school in the Arklay Mountains was shut down, but I headcanon that it wasn't the only one. Umbrella having boarding schools for child prodigies just makes perfect sense- I mean just read a file about the Executive Training School.
Going after/investing in younger kids is a logical thing to do because they're so much easier to manipulate and brainwash into being exactly what Umbrella wants.
And since Umbrella Europe had that rivalry where they were always trying to compete with their sister branch, I can imagine them seeing what happened to the Executive Training School as an opportunity: Umbrella US fucked up the concept, so they can outdo them by simply running their own competently, without it completely falling apart.
Now you're probably thinking there's a hole in my headcanon, the fact that Hunnigan's report mentions Luis enrolling in university and working for Umbrella after graduating.
My counterpoint is that Umbrella is sketchy as fuck. The whole "James Marcus being a crazy person and performing fucked up experiments on his own students" shit show happened when Luis was just a toddler. So I like to think that inspired them to get a little more cautious when it came to their fucked up child prodigy shenanigans, in time for them to have a solid system worked out by the time Luis is orphaned. And by that I mean they'd find a university to bribe into giving them cover. A new child prodigy graduates from the Umbrella school, Umbrella coughs up some cash, and suddenly that kid attended a university they never actually stepped foot in, and has a diploma with no direct ties to Umbrella. They 100% had the resources and pull to swing some type of arrangement like that.
And Luis is literally the most perfect target for a school like this. He's not just young, he's from an extremely isolated place, making him even easier to manipulate. He also has nothing. They can single him out and crack the whip and push him harder than any of his peers, and he'll just accept it, because what else can he do?
It's Umbrella, or the streets for him.
And I think he probably caught on to the fact that he had made a deal with the devil pretty quickly after starting on the Nemesis Project, but he had made his bed and had to lie in it. Because even after he graduates/becomes a legal adult, they have him completely locked in. There's literally no paper trail or anything official supporting the fact that he's a person who exists. The only thing is the university records Umbrella paid for. Umbrella can hand over some chump change and make those go away too. He wouldn't even be able to start from scratch without a degree, because they could go after him for fraud too. Claim he showed them his degree when they hired him, but discovered it must have been a fake, because the university has no records of him. Who would the courts side with, the kid without a birth certificate, or the pharmaceutical giant that can afford an army of lawyers? It's probably not enough to be all that life ruining, but threats don't necessarily have to be true to work. With Luis's unique life, he's most likely going to be scared of any threat like that, he just doesn't have any experience or context to help him get a grip and really think about it, he's just scared shitless at the thought of going to prison.
And ending this with a point that's independent of my other headcanons in the post and can work on its own. When discussing why Luis stayed for years, we can't forget about Rockfort Island.
On the island, there is also a prison camp and an airport. The prison camp especially, represents an especially dark side of Umbrella. Potential industrial saboteurs and traitors to Umbrella are captured and sent there to be used as human guinea pigs in biological experiments.
Once inside, prisoners are held there indefinitely.

I think the common assumption is that Luis fucked off back to Valdelobos because of Raccoon City and being afraid of governments/law enforcement coming after Umbrella, but I really think it was actually Umbrella he was running from. Umbrella would have seemed untouchable at this point, they had the blessing of the government to do what they did in Raccoon City, I doubt anyone there genuinely thought there would ever be legal consequences for any of that. Legal consequences were maybe a far-off possibility that wasn't guaranteed, while Umbrella was very much a real, present, active danger.
But if he got to a point where he couldn't handle the guilt of what he was doing anymore, his options were to disappear completely, or risk being captured and taken to a concentration camp. (Even just resigning normally, without taking any actions against Umbrella, would leave him terrified. A well-liked rising star like him just suddenly resigning, and offering no explanation, likely would have seemed suspicious, and given that Rockfort inmates were a resource for experiments, I can't imagine the bar for what makes someone a "traitor to Umbrella" is very high.)

for mikami or light?? so interested in ur law experience here!
Oh love this!! I think Mikami is exceptionally good at his job and probably a good guy to have as a coworker. Passionate about the work, keeps his head down, in it because he genuinely wants change (which is about as good as you can ask for from a prosecutor, even though the "change" isn't reform lmfao 🙄) etc. etc. He's on the young end for an attorney, having passed the bar right out of college (though I believe it's more common in Japan to go directly to law school from college rather than returning as an adult, since many people don't go at all and rather take the preliminary qualifying exam for the bar, which does not require a law degree — Mikami may or may not [depending on whether you go by the manga or anime timeline] have attended law school as a graduate program anyway bc the law school system was not instituted in Japan until 2004), which means he might have to work a little harder to be respected by his colleagues as a whippersnapper fresh out of the year-long prosecutor training program. However, I think his colleagues probably admire his work ethic, even if he's unlikely to join the rest of the office for drinks — so, respected and liked well enough by the people he works with, but still kind of socially unpopular just because of his own standoffish tendencies. He maybe has freaked somebody out individually by saying some surprisingly aggressive shit about the nature of good and evil and how evil deeds should be punished but frankly dudes like that are a dime a dozen in prosecutorial and police offices so it's probably whatever.
He's a total fucking pit bull in court and imo probably really good at telling a compelling story to the judge since his passion for obtaining what he views as justice for victims is so real and close to his heart. I imagine him as a real firebrand who almost transforms from this solemn, mild-mannered guy to this vibrant, angry advocate who's very capable of swaying a jury and really demonstrates the emotional basis for his Kira fanaticism. But he's not purely an emotional performer — his arguments are airtight from a legal perspective, even though his written voice is probably kind of dry and lacking in any particular linguistic flair. People who have only met him in a courtroom context are often surprised at what he's like in his day-to-day life, but they wouldn't be if they'd ever read his legal briefs, lmao.
I like to imagine Light in a non- or post-Kira AU going on to join a Japanese intelligence agency like the Public Security Bureau of either the NPA or the Tokyo Metropolitan Police, specifically in a line of work like the TMPD PSB's Fourth Foreign Affairs Division handling global counterterrorism efforts. I imagine this because I think it would be funny. I also think he would be well-qualified for a role of that type (The Global Terrorism Is Coming From Inside The House) and would have the nepotism bonus from his dad lmfao, and would additionally probably really enjoy it when it was exciting and politely tolerate the boring parts. I think he'd be well-liked and admired by his peers, as usual — we can see the way the task force treats him for evidence of this. He's a hard, competent worker and a friendly guy, so I imagine he moves up the ranks relatively quickly. (Also, the PSB building is right by the Tokyo Public Prosecutors Office, so if Mikami ever moves out of Kyoto and gets a job over there, I know they're making out in the courtyard and shit.)

Thinking about how we can be described as Other, according to Wildbow’s mythology in his web serials Pact and Pale.
An Other is a being that is not an “innocent” human or animal. They might be part human, but sliding toward undead or spirit or demon.
Actually, the categories we know about are incarnations, echoes, demons, spirits, gods, goblins, gouls, vestiges, oni, and a few others whose names we can’t remember. But the categories are human constructs and their edges are fuzzy and many things don’t fit well into them.
Anyway, our system origins and identities just happen to really fit into this world and its mechanics that Wildbow describes. All we have to do is imagine that it grants us certain status and power were we to be part of it. We have different names for what we are, but that often happens in the stories.
So, here’s our Palesona so far:
Our parents got together, started sharing the same bed, when their landlady was murdered in the apartment above where they lived. And then they moved into that apartment (if we are recalling correctly).
It is possible that that event got the attention of some Others, and it almost certainly created a ghost, or Echo, of their landlady.
Shortly after that, they got married and then they conceived us. We are not certain of the timeline.
This isn’t our true origins, but they’re close. These events really happened, but in Pact and Pale they could have these results.
Instead of conceiving an innocent human baby, something went a bit amiss, and their child was a composite of two Others. This resulted in a child that was autistic and intersex in subtle ways, but who also had two beings inhabiting them and making up their Self: Jenifer and Eh.
Both Jenifer and Eh are ancient. We haven’t finished figuring out just how they’d each be categorized as Other, but Eh at least is the vestige of a dragon. And Jenifer could be Fae, probably Winter court.
They could not work well together and there were some cracks in their composite being, so perhaps those cracks filled with nearby spirits, things from toys or the apartment, maybe the landlady’s echo.
This caused chaos.
At about two and a half years old, they all sought to manage their chaos by bringing in powerful outside help.
They found Phage, an Abyssal entity that identifies as Entropy Itself. Phage is an agent of change, that moment or series of events that occur between destruction and creation. It will ultimately tear everything apart, but in the mean time it creates beautiful intricacies in the process.
The three of them working together as a still incomplete composite being has a weird synergistic effect.
They create Echos of every person they catch even a fleeting glimpse of, and then incorporate those Echos into their being.
They can separate. They can bring anyone of them to the front, to become that being or person. And then can temporarily fuse and express themselves as a whole.
Jenifer can use her Glamour to alter people’s perceptions of reality.
Eh can channel element energies into direct powerful forces and is an agent of raw creation.
And Phage can cause things to decay and grow new life.
And together with all the Echos, they can reshape their body and behavior to imitate anyone, including fictional characters.
But, they were brought together in the birth and raising of a child of a couple of Innocents (humans unaware of the supernatural) who had a very supportive extended family and local community.
They were raised and taught how to be human in this way, with the only errors being the assumptions that they were male, neurotypical, and human.
This did result in trauma to their collective psyche, but that built up over time and didn’t come to a head until halfway through their 39th year of this existence.
People thought of them as weird, eccentric, off kilter, analytical, highly creative, empathetic, and compassionate, but lazy and easily distracted.
They spent much of their early life together daydreaming, and much of their legal adulthood drawing and writing.
They started a webcomic in 2001, and a comic making club in 2004. Both of these things attracted queer people to their lives in droves, bewildering and delighting them. Many of these queer people were Aware, and could see the Inmara for what they were, and some were also Others.
But the Inmara were so deeply in the habit of masking and pretending to be the person their parents had raised them to be that it took ten years after the founding of the B.S. of Comics for them to realize and admit their true natures, that they were trans, queer, and deeply Other.
It was at this point that their older, truer memories started to surface.
It didn’t happen suddenly, but over the course of several years, starting in 2009, when they married into a family of conservative Christians, some of whom were on the verge of being Aware.
The added stress of that cause their facade to begin fracturing, and they ultimately came out in 2015 when they could not hold it together any longer.
In the process, they lost their career, marriage, and house, and numerous friends drifted away.
But, they were taken in by a similar composite Other in the Portland area and her Aware girlfriend. And from their they slowly began networking with other Others and even a Practition or two (mages, witches, sorcerers, etc).
There’s a lot more to their backstory, but it would tend to make them vulnerable to share it, or even to become unraveled due to oaths of confidence.

Here’s a report from news.com.au about the legal system brutalising a woman for seven years because two men raped her. According to the headline, however, they didn’t rape her. They raped a party. Or maybe the rape was the party? Hard to know – and beside the point. The two rapists have been found guilty *twice*. They served 19 months in jail and after seven years all they have to do now is some community service and go back to the town that filled the courtroom with their supporters. The woman they raped was forced to move interstate by her community’s furious defence of the men who raped her. She also had to survive four trials, a successful appeal, and a sentencing hearing, to finally be told that the rapists have suffered enough and don’t deserve any further punishment. Then, because she hasn’t already had enough to deal with, she has to see this headline, erasing her from the story and calling the revolting crime committed against her a “party rape”. I can’t imagine how much strength it must take for this woman to just keep breathing in an out, let alone try to rebuild her life as this tortuous process dragged on for seven years. Dame Vera Baird called this the “decriminalisation of rape“. It’s not only that almost none of the men who commit rape are are convicted. It’s also that the price rape victims pay for seeking justice is far greater than the price men pay for committing rape – on the rare occasions they pay any price at all. Women and feminists have been protesting about this for more than fifty years. Decades of parliamentary reports, inquiries, law reforms, and investigations have proven the legal system has no justice for people who are raped. A lot of words to say, in short, that I’m a bad friend.
After what must’ve been some good year and a half, I checked into my Avistaz account again. I wanted to watch a Japanese movie based on a book I read earlier this month and couldn’t find it anywhere (legally) so I had to crumble to my old piracy habits. Nice movie, nice book. Some things I wasn’t a big fan of, but overall, nice watch.
That was not the only thing I did for the first time in some good year and a half this week. Just two days before I had a dream with an old internet friend of mine. I woke up and thought ‘holy shit, I should check into her’ and so I did. Had to download discord again, and after some struggle figuring out my login and password, there I was. First thing I did back in that hell of a .. whatever it is .. was leaving all my servers and deleting all the messages sent in the time I was not around. Did not concern me in the year I was away, does not concern me now. I looked for the server my friend and I had and that was gone too, before I could get my hands in it. I get it, I dipped, no one was using it, but it made me sad.
Whatever. So, I messaged that friend I dreamed with. It took maybe 15 minutes for her to reply. That was nice. Maybe I should check into all the internet friends I ghosted, huh? Logged into twitter for the first time in almost 2 years. My timeline looked like a fever dream.
I couldn’t recognize a single one of them. Different profile pictures, different interests, different names. I didn’t say anything. Took the first hour or so to go through all of their accounts trying to pick up on cues of their old selves in the haze of their new personas. Some I could link to my old friends; some I had no clue. It was a fruitless task, so at some point I gave up and just tweeted it out. Does any store have ‘sorry I disappeared for 2 years and no longer recognize any of you, how are you guys doing?’ cards?
Some reintroduced themselves to me so I could figure out the rest too. I can’t pinpoint who’s missing, but I also don’t think they’re all there. But I’m sorry to repeat myself and also to sound this cold: did not concern me in the (2) year(s) I was away, does not concern me now.
That friend, the dream one, was my closest friend for some two years. Talking to her again was natural, but it felt different. We changed a lot on the course of our friendship (we were 17 when we met and we’re 23 now) but we were together to witness those changes as it happened. With me deciding on taking an impromptu sabbatical year off of the internet, there’s a lot I missed. When we’re talking and the conversation nears a dead end, I panic. Come up with the first thing I can possibly think off. Preferably related to one of her interests so it gets her to talk and me to simply answer. I’m afraid she notices I’m having a hard time talking and thinks I’m sucking up to her or not being genuine. Maybe I am not. But I do want to talk to her. I do want to listen to her. I just am trying to figure out how.
When I was 3, or maybe 4, I befriended a girl at school. She was the sun of my solar system, and I revolved around her for almost 20 years Carefully crafted my personality so she’d like me, curated all my interests so she’d think I’m col, heck, I even convinced my parents to send me to the same super expensive high school she was going to attend once we graduated middle school. In return, I was maybe her closest friend for a while, and of course I was, because who wouldn’t want around someone whose personality is basically adoring you? She liked having her ego stroked, and I had no self-respect, so I was the ideal sidekick.
One day she said something... bad. I was sleeping over at her house. We had just started uni together (of course). I was still revolving around her clueless and careless of anything else. Then she blurted out something I would not dare to repeat and could not bother to explain the context of, but imagine something along the lines ‘but Palpatine isn’t that bad’ if you were a jedi or ‘Voldemort isn’t even that fascist!’ if you were Hermione (sorry for the Harry Potter ref in god damned 2023, couldn’t think of anything else). I couldn’t argue with her because I was so taken aback, and so surprised too. I laughed it off and said I was tired so I was gonna go sleep already. We turned off the lights. I cried myself to sleep.
You see, I was obsessed with this girl. So that was hard to deal with. I thought maybe I had misheard it. Maybe I was going insane. Maybe she didn’t mean it like that. But for the next few years, every now and then she would say something of the sorts - and it was always when it was just the two of us. One day she slipped in in front of another of our friends. When I went out with this specific girl again, just us two, she brought up the incident. So you heard that too?!
It took 4 years between that first comment until we last talked for the last time (her birthday, last year), so when the fall out came around, I was already over it. It was like saying goodbye to something already long gone. Totally over it, yeah, but just this month I cried in the middle of the night because the thought of that kid I loved so much thinking I’d grow up to leave her behind without a care for it made me feel like my heart was ripped out of my chest. She was once an extension of my own self as much as I was her shadow. Now she is nothing. I don’t miss her current self, wouldn’t change a thing about our friendship going sour. And I am well aware our relationship dynamics was never great. But, gods, I miss that little girl. Maybe as much as I miss the little girl I was.
Tomorrow is my last break day before the term starts and on the very first day of this break, I told myself I would talk with two other friends about why the actual hell things were so weird between us. Of course, I did not do that. I had been wanting too for longer than the break, but I did not need the added stress, so I waited until my classes were over. Then they were, but my friends weren’t, so I thought out of respect I should wait for them as well. Then theirs were, but stuff was heavy for them in other areas, and I did not want to bother, then....
At what point consideration stops being that and starts being excuses?
I have tomorrow still. Maybe I will text them. Maybe I won’t. Regardless of what I do, I will regret it. Life for me is none but a bunch of regrets piled up on top of the other and I’m fine with that. Or whatever.
