"Romeo and Juliets romance is just so unrealistic! It's not what a romance is like in MY experience!"
Oh? Oh really? You, adult living in 2022, you never went to a fancy Venetian masquerade in the 1590s and met a mysterious stranger and then your first conversation spontaneously forms a perfect sonnet? That's not a totally relatable experience for you?
Is Macbeth unrealistic because of the witches? Is Midsummer unrealistic because of the love potion?
Like, there's no explicit magic in Romeo and Juliet, but it still exists in a heightened reality, and overlooking the role that language plays within the text itself kneecaps your analysis of the intent.
When we hear of Romeo, his dad and friends are discussing his recent sad mood- he's upset because the girl he likes has no interest in him. His friends try to distract him from it with a party, but dont really seem to...connect with or fully empathize with his sadness. When we first hear of Juliet, her father and Paris are planning her marriage (without her input.) They are both talked about but not really listened to. The way they are spoken about isolates them from others.
Then they meet, and with no knowledge of each other, not even their names, they click into perfect rhythm. They finish each other rhymes. They form perfect ABAB quatrains in conversation, their sentences form a rhyming *couplet* at the end.
You know the song Ana sings with Hans in Frozen? Love is an open door? We finish each others- Sandwiches? Yeah- it's riffing on this. The idea that you meet someone perfect and right away your souls can make poetry together. The immediate intimacy of being so in sync that your introduction is a love poem.
I don't know, yall. Romeo and Juliet isn't a gritty hyper-realistic Oscar nominated docu-drama. It teters on the edge of fairy tale and myth, it leans on its language to convey deeper emotional truths that a 5 act play doesn't have the time to develop as deeply as we, in our world of movie montages and long form TV, are more accustomed to. This isn't a slow burn, pining, enemies to friends to lovers. It's soul mates love at first sight, and when you accept that, the play can get on with the business of saying what it wants to say about hate and the cycle of violence and social rules and decorum and how grudges and blood fueds can destroy the magic in the world if we let it.
"It doesn't matter if they are really in love. They should be allowed to be stupid hormonal teenagers without dying" I see many people say, and while I think that sentiment is true, I DO think it matters that they are in love. I think it matters that their meeting sparks a sonnet, and that poetry is snuffed out by the violence around them.
I think it matters that what they had wasn't an arranged marriage or a "good match" made by approving friends- that it was spontaneous and instant and inexplicable, but that the world couldn't let that be because it defied all the rules. Because it wasn't set up by parents and wasn't politically convenient, because it wasn't part of a proper, prolonged courtship with chaperones and social approval- it was love and poetry that defied all of that and so it was snuffed out. That they are pushed to such extremes not just by the killings, but by Juliets impending engagement to Paris, they have to act now because their love doesnt fit into the proper pattern set out by society- I think that matters.

10 Anti LO Asks
1. to add to the antisemitism anon: its usually jewish webtoon readers who point this out within LO circles, so they're likely more prone to notice these tropes used over non-jewish readers, even if most wont because of how often antisemitic tropes are just common place at this point. i doubt rachel used them intentionally, her refusal to listen or fix that or any actual complaints and issues is a bigger problem to me. It shows a lack of listening and being conscious of others.
2. IM SO GLAD FOR THIS. I feel like you can't give critiques of this series without someone getting upset about it.
Anyway, I wanted to see if anyone has noticed that the art style just isn't consistent?? Also.. the features of the main characters feels more and more... bad?? Idk what it is but it makes me UNCOMFORTABLE.
3. If RS has based Persephone off herself and she is attracted to men like Hades then I really feel sorry for her.. bc no woman with common sense or at least some self esteem would be attracted to men like that
4. The theory about Hades being evil and orchestrating the whole thing is the only theory i’ll ever support about LO and the one which would actually give a good ending to an awful comic, however i agree with you that this theory has a high chance of not coming true since Hades is our ~soft emo boi who deserves nothing but love and the beautiful Persephone ~
5. Lore Olympus: Allmighty and powerful god Hades, slave owner, rich CEO, lord of the dead, have his romantic interest, future queen, overpowered goddess of Spring... Doing the dishes.
Amazing.
6. Can i just say that there is no more need of a modern adaptation of any mythology not just HxP.. bc if they’re gonna be as shitty as LO there better not be any.. I would 100% support a comic which stays true to the mythology and actually portrays it as it is (bad stuff and all) rather than have some modern interpretation of it where 99.8% of the mythology is changed and the artists don’t even bother to learn more about it and the whole plot and scenarios don’t even make sense not to mention the way the characters are designed
7. The fact that people pray to and work with these deities, to this day, with no respect to the fact is a bit tone deaf. There are ways to have your own interpretations and be respectful. Also no offense to Mads, he’s phenomenal in what he do, but using him as Hades inspo isn’t it.
8. RS creating the chapters week by week shows that she couldn’t care less about actually learning and properly interpreting the mythology she’s basing her comic on.. how are you gonna give yourself a week or so to read about greek mythology? When it comes to anything that has to do with a country’s culture you need to take at least a year to actually educate yourself on it and also need to ask and communicate with natives and academics of that country if you’re gonna make a comic on it
9. I feel like Rachel based her remake off of an already pretty popular webcomic (omgcheckplease) and just made it straight. And with a plotline that seems to be jumping all over the place.....
10. The only reason why RS went with a HxP interpretation or whatever is bc she knew if she would make sth this shitty and the characters were just original characters from her she wouldn’t be half as famous as she is now

so!
my friend @sakhafa tagged me to do a ting with 10 facts about me. took me a while to find 10 facts that were cute but not intrusive or oversharing about myself. so without further ado...*plays the DUN DUN DUN DUUUUN beethoven song*
1. my name is bushra! im 19 and im from tripoli libya and i currently live in canada (won’t specify where, because the internet is creepy)
2. im in uni! studying sociology and hopefully will be a doctor one day!
3. i play the violin, tenor sax, and a bit of cello! i love music so much one of the first songs i heard in my life was work it by missy elliott (crazy i know). gosh when i meet a religious muslim person i dont like inviting them to many of my parties because i wanna listen to kanye without judgement or complaints (unless it’s a party hosted by my mama then sure whatever go insane i guess)
4. my favourite sweets are brownies. i would literally kill someone for a brownie. i also really love cheesecake and some arabic thing called “zalabya” (libyan zalabya is different from the egyptian one)
5. i LOOOOOOOOOOOOVE blue jeans. like, its genuinely the only thing i wear. i could sleep in them i find them so comfortable, which is a thing that most of my friends find very strange. i also LOOOOOOOOOVE solid coloured, crewneck sweaters. my actual perfect outfit is a pair of high waisted jeans, a crewneck, and sneakers man. its just the easiest. i also love clean, crisp white t-shirts and a good oversized jeans jacket. i am a huge fan of high fashion though, and my dream is to be the editor in chief of vogue. yea, i know. crazy.
6. i truly dont think that love lasts, and like i dont think i need to elaborate on that.
7. my birthday is july 9 so cancer gang lmaooooo
8. i love books like more than anything, they’re one of the things in life that i can find comfort in. i love perfume: the story of a murderer, the godfather, the glass castle, and one million other books. im currently reading a little life and it is so beautiful it’s literally a modern classic
9. i love taking photographs of people, like that’s a legit passion of mine. and i almost hate it when people pose for a picture, unless i specifically ask them to. i love taking pictures of people in their element, whether that be eating, talking, crying, laughing, walking, staring at a wall, etc. i just love the reality of pictures like that. i also would like to make a movie one day, first a couple of short ones just to try my hand at it, and then long ones, because there’s like a thousand and one books that i want to make into movies.
10. despite the fact that i say i hate my country a lot i actually love our culture and language and heritage and sites and all of that. i think it’s one of the most beautiful, rich-in-history, remarkable places in the world, it’s just that god cursed it with the worst people in the world.
so that’s about it i guess. i dont know who to tag but if you read this feel free to remake it! i hope you had fun reading this or whatever. stay groovy!
