Candy Candy (Manga) by Kyoko Mizuki and Yumiko Igarashi

The first anime I ever watch was Candy Candy. I watched it dubbed in Spanish in a local channel. Back in the early 1980s if we didn't tune in at the airing time we would miss an episode, and I never really knew when the episodes would come on, so I didn't see the whole series. I would see the first episodes in VHS and at some point I saw a couple of episodes of her in London and then scattered episodes of her as a nurse. Still, I loved the story and its characters so when I had the opportunity to see the whole anime, I watched it. And I loved it even more. . . I cried, laughed and sighed. . . I longed to read the novel and the manga. It's been a challenge to tell you the truth. I haven't found the novel yet, but I finally found the 9 vols. of the manga translated into Spanish - and I devoured it. . .

The manga is less tragic, the anime added a lot of side stories that were sad; but even so, the anime was accurate and faithful to the manga for the most part; although I was surprised to see that the famous kiss between Candy and Terry didn't happen in Scotland but at school during the May Festival. Doesn't matter if it's the manga or the anime, that open ending drives me nuts. I know in the novel there are some letters Candy and Albert exchanged afterwards. . . I just want to know what happens next to these two.

The fandom is divided between Terry and Albert. But if you ask me, I think both men were important in Candy's life. Terry was a beautiful love and tragic too. Albert was always Candy's past, present and future. A person can love more than once. Candy loved three men: Anthony, Terry and Albert. Each one had a purpose in her life and helped shaped who she became. . .

I think that Candy Candy is one of may favorite stories because each character is so moving, they are all trying to find their own way, Candy, Albert and Terry make their own futures, they don't let other's expectations and society's rules stop them. Candy becomes a nurse, Terry becomes a famous actor and Albert - after traveling the world - takes the role of the head of the family under his own terms. I like that Candy shows strength by letting herself go through the emotions, and looking for the positive things of life. She always returned to House of Pony (her home) when she needed to recharge batteries, she was never ashamed of who she was and where she came from.

I truly enjoyed the manga and if I ever find the novel, I will definitely read it!
