In Defense of Dramione - an essay

Okay, time for another Ted talk/ soapbox/ pointless rambling...Putting it under the cut because I have opinions.

In Defense of Dramione - an essay

First of all, I want to say I ship Dramione. Which is a recent thing, specifically about half a year ago. I didn't always because well it never occurred to me that you could. Of course, that's how ships are. We ship some ships bc they're canon, okay, fine. But we ship a whole lot others that aren't because you name whatever reason (they've got chemistry, they WORK, they're better than the canonically approved pairings whatever the hell else, idk). My point is, it had never crossed my mind that I myself would actually like the idea of Draco and Hermione. Bc naturally, you look at them and you think, "He did insult her when they were children. He was an asshat, etc etc." But...BUT.

You know that trope Enemies to Lovers? Ever heard of redemption arcs? Yeah, those are things. Of course, I don't speak on behalf of everyone in the fandom because we all have our reasons for why. But I ship them because there is potential in Draco's character for growth, for repentance, for redemption. I believe that he's capable, when he's an adult of realizing that he fucked up and that the beliefs he was spoonfed as a child are not the law of the land. I've read more fics than I can count that describe this character arc for him and they do it masterfully. Honestly, I think he's a pretty complex character and I believe that we see a sliver of that in the last few movies. Like look, in 6th year, Harry hit him with Sectumsempra and nearly killed him. But when the Golden Trio were at the Manor and it was on Draco's shoulders to identify Harry and basically seal their doom, did he do it? Did he rat them out? Nope.

Maybe this wasn't exactly Draco "forgiving" Harry, admittedly. But Draco saw that Harry was their only hope for destroying Voldemort or for having some sliver of a winning chance, of a possibility of surviving the mess Voldemort was orchestrating. He obviously deemed it important enough to dare to lie, especially knowing that Bellatrix would have summoned the Dark Lord himself in the next few moments. If Draco really didn't care about the outcome of everything, he wouldn't have done that. If anything, we see that he cares at least about the safety of his family because that could have also been the motive. But that gets me thinking, couldn't he also have confirmed Harry's identity? Voldy would have arrived, perhaps praised Draco and spared the Malfoys to die another die. So really, Draco might have gotten more out of it if he HAD confirmed Harry's identity. Hmm food for thought.

Second point, I'm not going to judge anyone in the fandom because of reasons stated above, but I will go so far as to say, please, if you don't ship Dramione, that's okay. Everyone has their own cup of tea, but please, do NOT claim that all of us (that every single one of us who happen to support this ship) are and I quote "are just a bunch of horny teenagers desperate for some pretty boy and pretty girl sex". That isn't fair and it frankly isn't true, so please don't. I know many wonderful people who have crafted amazing stories and shown great talent through their writing to express the complexities I've just spoken about.

I'll end by saying that we all have our ships, and that's okay. There's no real right or wrong inasfaras who you ship with whom. But it's a basic gesture of respect, I think, to let others love the pairings that they love. Spreading hatred, ill-will or just unkindness toward those of us who enjoy a particular ship, that's not cool and that's what brings us down in what should be something we all enjoy and go to find joy and share that joy with others.

Okay, it seems I really defended Draco more than Hermione here but I will die on this hill and defend my dorks. Fight me on it (joking here but really though. XD) Thanks for coming to my Ted talk.

thinking a fic is actually taking the time out to build a love/hate pairing between a hero and villain with slowly growing mutual respect and begrudging bonding and earned moments of connection/revelation

getting 26 chapters in only for it be revealed that the dude’s actually obsessed with her and has been for years and she’d just lost her memories of it

#WHY DO FIC WRITERS DO THIS #WHY WHY WHY #like the ENTIRE reason I ever LIKE love/hate is because it should almost INTRINSICALLY guarantee that a romantic arc should be earned #it should spare me of all the fucking boring love at first site shit that does absolutely nothing for me #because why would I care about a love I don't even get a chance to understand #and commits to taking people through a process where they ACTUALLY have to get to know each other #without any love blinders on #the good the bad the ugly #no one's pretending cause who cares what their enemy thinks #BUT SOMEHOW MY PRECIOUS ROMANTIC GENRE OF CHOICE IS *INUNDATED*#in obsession fics where the dude is obsessed with the girl from the get-go #like all that 'hatred' was actually fueled by this long-standing lure and attraction that makes absolutely no sense #and that the girl somehow never knew about #WHY #lmao like it literally cheapens everything the author's built over 20+ chapters and yet!?????#it's so????#pervasive??????#in these fics????#idk why I ever thought reading dramione was a thing I should do #I've been watching the HP movies for halloween and realized I'd never actually gotten into that pairing #and maybe it could be fun #I was INCORRECT.#anyway #that's my rant for the day #love/hate and love/obsession are not the same genre bye

(1) Soo... I'll just drop this in a random Reylo blog's ask if you don't mind but I need someone's advise... I seem to have a problem. Basically, I've been shipping Reylo ever since TFA and now after TLJ too, but the more I look at fan theories of how they could become canon the less I seem to like the ship. It's just, everyone seems to want them to work out in that way of teaming up and becoming grey and stuff, everyone but ME. I love the ship but I love it for different reasons.

(Read below because my response is long!)

(2) You see, I love villain/heroine ships to death and that’s also why I love Reylo. The reason I love it even more after TLJ is BECAUSE they are on different sides again, him being supreme leader only makes it better. I am not exactly rooting for a Kylo redemption either. I mean, I respect people’s theories but I don’t want them to ruin the ship for me so I wanted to stay away from tumblr but there is some nice stuff here so I don’t really want to give up on it completely.(3) I mean, there is a big chance Reylo WILL work out like the fandom thinks it will, Kylo being redeemed and Rey and him running away and stuff and idk if I will still ship it after IX, it depends very much on how JJ will present it and on the details. So… why am I throwing this at you? Mostly because I just wanted to get it off my chest if you have some advice, I’d be glad to hear it… also if there are other people who think the same, I’d love to hear from you… Thanks for listening anyway. @rinsolo28

I understand where you’re coming from, nonnie. Let me give my own opinion and view here. I think I understand you the most because I looooove villain/heroine ships as well, with a passion. I think you should focus more on the actual characters rather than their labels. That’s what “becoming grey” means- it means that you’re human, not on a side. But character-wise? These characters aren’t going to really change. Sure, their motivations and how they view the world, will certainly change, but their characters will not. Kylo’s gonna still be that Solo asshole, Rey’s still gonna be as stubborn as ever. Instead of looking it as a villain/heroine standpoint, look at them as people. Because, for the smallest scene in TLJ (the hand touch scene), the both of them did not look at sides. They didn’t care, they just wanted to be together. Rey started caring about Kylo before even seeing the vision, to which she interpreted he would become “good” - she started caring for him when he was switching between Kylo/Ben.

Now, I go back on it sometimes, but I think Kylo/Ben are the same person. Kylo is just a mask, a facade, that Ben uses- because BEN is a afraid. He wants to be feared. His entire life, all he has gotten is his family abandoning him- and his fear. Kylo Ren is not actually who he is. So he’s not a villain. He’s just an asshole with issues. In real life, you can be an asshole with issues, and not a war criminal, if you get what I mean. In the very beginning most of us looked at Rey/Kylo’s relationship as the “villain/heroine” but listen, if a villain/heroine were to become romantic in any way- or have a good ending- or be a viable, important relationship- what would have to happen?

Let’s compare Kylo/Rey to another villain/heroine ship, Dramione (Draco & Hermione from HP). Draco/Hermione never had any development. The author dismissed their relationship as nothing, and “weird” and found it “bad” that people were starting to like Draco’s character, and wanted more from him. This is the case with many villain/heroine ships, and it stays that way. It never goes anywhere. So bringing it back again, let me ask you: Where did you expect it to go, and how did you expect it to get there? Kylo/Rey don’t view each other as villain/heroine. I think, if you had a bit of a change o mind into their dynamic, you’d understand a bit more. You mentioned reading meta’s, and not liking them- but instead of listening to those meta’s, YOU decide who you think the characters are right now. Think about it just by yourself. “Where are these characters going?” “How do they feel about each other?” “How has it changed from TFA?” “What do I hope for them?” “Do I want them to be happy together or have a bad ending?”

I wouldn’t worry about the whole “becoming grey” thing. Rey and Kylo are still Rey and Kylo. They are here to stay and their entire characters aren’t changing. They fell in love in TLJ as they were then. Rey isn’t one dimensional, and Kylo/Ben isn’t either. Therefore I don’t think we can put labels on them. They’re just Rey and Kylo. If you loved their relationship in TFA, you should love it in TLJ because these characters are still the exact same. Nothing has changed, other than the fact they fell in love with each other, and will inspire each other to develop, not personality-wise, but mentally. It’s easy to see characters as one dimensional villain/heroines when the story calls for it, like the many villain/heroine ships are and stay that way, that’s why they never become canon. Rey and Kylo defy this trend. Instead of seeing Rey/Kylo being on different sides, think of the most important, honest and romantic moment in TLJ where they don’t view the other on a side at all. It’s the fact that, no matter where the hell these two are in the entire galaxy, whether Kylo’s Supreme Leader or if Rey is a random scavenger on a random planet called Jakku, they are connected and they love each other. They will NEVER be able to let that go, or feel anything different.

If you’ve read this far, thanks for hearing me out. Maybe I didn’t change your opinion, but this is just my thoughts and what I gathered from what you said. In the end, you’re allowed to have your own feelings and thoughts on the ship. When it comes down to it, you’ll just have to think about it more and wait until EP. IX comes out.

Draco Malfoy appreciation post/ personal rant

Okay but can we all just take a moment to really appreciate Draco Malfoy. Although intended to be just another representation on mean, racist and spoiled children, Draco Malfoy is one of the best and most complex characters ever and I will never truly forgive JKR for not writing a proper redemption arc for him (and no I do not count Cursed Child).

Take a seat everybody cause I’m about to give you a few reasons as to why Draco Malfoy should be loved a lot more than he is.

1. He is smart. Literally there are people out there that still think Draco got through his Hogwarts years based off his Malfoy name (money) and Snape giving him an easy ride which IRKS me. The latter maybe true but I highly doubt that Draco MALFOY, who comes from a family that believes in their worth over others, would have parents that allows him to slack off on his studies. The Malfoys literally believe they are the best of the best and in order to be that they have to be SMART! Lucius and Narcissa Malfoy would definitely not let their one and only heir ride off on his name and money only and would believe they would have to prove their worth with wits. Um and must I bring up the obvious fact that Draco single handedly fixed the vanishing cabinet which is probably a very complex assignment for any wizard let alone a 16 year old boy?!?! And don’t give me that “he was under extreme orders to do so which helped push him to do it” bull because speaking from personal experience, not everyone works well under so much stress and anxiety so fight me. (and if this isn’t a great example on how he would totally match wits with Hermione then idk what is but we’re not here for dramione today)

2. He defies the odds. Get comfy guys cause this is a long one. I’m not going to talk about him and the cabinet again, although he does defies odds there, but I’m talking about how he literally defies his family as he gets older - realizing right from wrong. Draco Malfoy grew up in unfortunate circumstances where he was surrounded by bigotry and racism. Should we fault him, a child, who was only surrounded by such hate growing up, for his actions? As an adult maybe, but we are talking about Draco in his adolescence where he is still learning and growing. Yes he was a bully. Yes he was mean. But we get a glimpse of what could have been in the sixth instalment where he finally shows his vulnerable side in - which the audience finally realize that he is just a boy. At 15/16 where he was forced to get the dark mark and complete an almost impossible task (cabinet and murder) in order repay his FATHERS MISTAKES AND at the age of 16/17 where he had to share his house with not just a cult of death eaters BUT THE LORD OF DEATH AND UGLY HIMSELF. Even so he a. couldn't bring himself to kill Dumbledore and b. wouldn’t identify his former schoolmates (also his ultimate nemesis). That is called character growth mfs. Whether it was because he just couldn't will himself to see anymore death, especially people he knew, or if it was because he saw Harry as the only option to end Voldemort - we may never know, but the important thing is that he never brought himself to do what would have been seen as unredeemable acts.

2.5. He defies ALOT of odds. Oh did you think I was done. Well you thought wrong. We’re not just going to talk about his teenage years, no we’re dwelling into his childhood as well. Draco may have been an angry little boy but he still had his moments where readers never took him as a serious threat. Besides the fact that he was a child and too pompous to be taken seriously, there have been times when he wasn’t such an evil little git. Like the time he basically warned hermione and the others that Death eaters were looking for muggles and muggleborns to torture during the tournament. Why did he bring that up? If he really wanted harm to come to Hermione why did he (albeit in a rude/snide manner) warn her to hide - unless he seriously lacked common sense, which I highly doubt b/c you would have to be really stupid to not realize what kind of information you’re giving away. And I find that sort of endearing in a way as even with the hate he grew up with regarding muggleborns, he still doesn’t want to see people he knows die, despite what he said about the Chamber of Secrets cause that was all talk and no walk tbh let’s be honest here.

3. He’s human. If those last few points didn't convince you that Draco is a severely grey character then hopefully this one will. There is nothing more humanizing (don’t @ me if you disagree) than the ability to love. Draco obviously is able to do so as shown in his utter devotion to his family. What was that again that Voldemort low-ket threatened him with? Oh right, it was Draco’s family, his own mom and dad, in exchange for murdering his headmaster. Like what the fucking fuck kind of mental trauma this poor boy. ALSO, god let’s not forget when Crabbe (or Goyle if you’ve only watched the movies) died, Draco was a mess because his friend had just DIED in front of him. If thats not all types of fucked up and more importantly, doesn’t prove to you that Draco can love and show how deeply he cares then idek.

Honestly, JKR had the audacity (still love you Row) to say she was “unnerved” by the fact that so many fell in love with Draco like she didn't write all these things about him in the first place. We’re not romanticizing what’s not already there. We know there isn’t a heart of a true born hero underneath the prejudice little shit that is Draco Malfoy but SHE WROTE THESE MOMENTS THAT HELPED HUMANIZE HIM and what kind of world would it be if we couldn't learn to forgive and see the good in people. Draco is all shades of grey and JKR def. intended this or she would have wrote him into a better villain. Humans aren’t perfect and we relate to anti-heroes because thats what makes them human. “The world isn't split into good people and Death Eaters. We've all got both light and dark inside us. What matters is the part we choose to act on. That's who we really are.” Draco Malfoy has shown multiple redeemable qualities because he hasn’t fully acted out on his dark side which makes him redeemable in my eyes. People are allowed to grow up and out of their mistakes.

Okay rant done, if you’ve read all of this then I congratulate you cause this was longer then intended lol. Carry on your merry little ways fellow potterheads.

my first thoughts on the series: “Hi I’m seven years old and the basilisk is scary therefore I hate everything to do with Harry Potter and will never read or watch it ever.”

my thoughts now: this story is so much a part of me that i couldn’t explain my love for it if I tried. It’s like coming home and wrapping yourself in a warm blanket and eating chocolate until all the dementors vanish.

my favourite storyline/moment: I love all the moments when all the girls are just hanging out and talking and supporting each other, honestly friendship goals

a storyline that never should have been written: I’m a little confused about what the Rags/Lissa plotline ever had to do with anything? but it does give some good character-building for lots of characters I guess

my first thoughts on the show: omg Shawna and Elizabeth made a webseries! I’m so proud of them! I cannot wait to support them and watch every episode!

my thoughts now: I love everything about this show but am always wary of new episodes because they’re probably angst galore

What unconventional superpower would you have? I would like to be able to freeze time. Not like go back or skip over it, but I’d want to be able to just stop time itself.

Beelzebub was so thirsty that he cursed the first living thing he saw into a strange tree that had water inside and grew flowers. But Hayes was angry at the evil Beelzebub for cursing him into the strange tree. So as Beelzebub was sleeping against Hayes, Hayes used all of his willpower and grew hundreds of tiny pokies! Beelzebub awoke immediately and ran away from Hayes because he was so frightened.
