not to overstate things but truly my vilain origin story is the number of people who seem to think that 'what are useful ways to interact with visual art' is not a complex conversation that's lasted for centuries

You mentioned Othello in another post and I saw your comment on someone else's post about the ending of Penny Dreadful. Out of the top of your head, can you think of other notable examples of women being killed by men they were/are intimate with? It feels like I've seen this many, many times, but Jean and Logan from the X-Men franchise is the only other example that jumps to mind.
In real life, whenever a woman is murdered, her husband or boyfriend is the most obvious suspect. That's for a reason. In vast majority of the cases that assumption proves to be correct. So, I have a personal theory, that there's some messed up underlying reason for male writers to constantly romanticize violence and death of women, come up with the weirdest reasons for why it was necessary, and why the "hero" of the story whose actions are completely justified in the narrative and who had a good reason is the one to put her down™.
I mean murder is illegal in real life and fiction is after all a safe outlet to act out one's fantasies. Or it just might be a "Oh its so tragic and edgy" *swoons* thing that happens because of popular tropes.
Tumblr media
Othello killing his wife Desdemona because he was manipulated into it by the villain, Jon killing Dany because she went "Mad" because of a coin flip or whatever, Tyrion killing Shae because of his manpain, Stannis "sacrificing his daughter for the greater good" and Eva Green's character in Penny Dreadful begging her love interest to kill her because she was evil incarnate even though she just caused a fog and lit up some candles after seasons of the evil inside her being hyped up...There's a lot more where this comes from.
For a comprehensive list of examples from literature, movies, TV shows, anime, etc, you can check out these two links for the tropes:

Tragic Monster
"When a background character becomes a monster, you generally don't care. You just watch someone wipe the floor with them like they're nothing. But what happens when it's a character that the Main Characters have come to love and care about over the course of the work?"
There might be more tropes for lover murder scenarios. In any of you can think of more examples, please add them.
