gifmaker / cc wrapped 2023!
thanks for tagging me my angel @jkvjimin 💜
i tried really hard not to choose all comp sets, but those take the most effort and therefore are what i'm prouder of than a standard set, but regardless...
here are my top 10 fave creations of the year:
bts chapter 1 insta feed // this was an insanely taxing project and is probably the most work i've ever put into anything, but i was really inspired to do it. it took about a week (one day for each panel) and was repetitive, i literally threw out my back by day 3 from sitting working on it that my body was in SO MUCH PAIN, but i wanted to get everything right and make it make sense which is why i wrote up a detail post breaking it down and explaining every decision that went into this. i still intend to make this a series and do one dedicated to their japanese discography (i actually started on one before i published this but didn't like the concept) and for their solo work, but it doesn't feel like the right time yet as things continue to release. but i look forward to it!
cheesy bts valentine cards // this was purposely corny, but the response was unbelievable! i had fun working on it and was so happy it made people laugh and smile. the tags were a joy to read on this post and it's my fourth most popular gifset ever. thank you!
bts guide to troubled birds // yet another corny idea, but i get a kick out of making silly comps and was inspired to make this. i started with jimin's as an experiment because his poem was the easiest to choose and built the rest of it from there, carefully deciding which poem to apply to each member and recreating them from scratch. i love celebrating their chaos in fun ways, so this was nice!
jungkook's sensitive tear ducts // sometimes i get really random comp ideas and spontaneously start making something with no plan. this was one of those times and it is now my third most popular gifset since making this blog in 2020 lol. ofc i'd never gif him upset about anything serious, so i only chose moments that didn't feel inappropriate to include to keep this set lighthearted and humorous.
long live bts (10th anniversary set) // i always knew i wanted to make something with the lyrics of that song because every word of it reminds me of their story. the 10th anniversary was perfect since it literally says "it was the end of a decade". i wanted the set to just be really simple so i went with a more desaturated look and focused more on choosing a scene from each year that fit the lyric per that gif.
love me again mv // this was my first time bothering to gif a music video in 4k. i usually avoid it bc it slows my computer down and takes a lot longer (i also have to reconvert the youtube download to a different file type to get it to play in my kmplayer, it's a whole process) but i waited a few days after it came out because i originially didn't think i could color it when it premiered so i just didn't gif it. but i gave it a try anyway when i didn't feel so pressured and i really like how crisp they came out.
jungkook's bday set // i didn't have a plan for this when i started, but i searched a lot for inspo and finally found something i felt like i could make something with so i came up with this very barbie-esque rendition for jungkook that i'm still very fond of. i purposely didn't write happy birthday on it anywhere so it could be shared year-round. it's probably my fave set i made all year and everyone seemed to like it too!
jimin's bday set // this was originally just going to include songs from FACE, but i decided it didn't celebrate jimin's work as a whole if i didn't include all his solo songs/endeavors so it turned into a big monster. i like how it came out though!
standing next to you mv // this year i was introduced to HD master files, so instead of rushing to download a new mv from youtube and giffing it fast, i'd wait for a higher quality rip from apple music to show up online. the difference is quite astounding. i made gifs with master files for all three of jk's music videos this year (seven, 3D), but i like how this one turned out the best.
vmin comp // just felt like giffing my two favorite people before they left and needed to channel my sad emotions into something before seeing them seperate for so long. i included moments i've giffed before and ones i've never had the chance to gif. i could have made this post so much longer but forced myself to stop lol. i like the pink and blue colors in it a lot <3 i miss them so much
thank for all your support on my work this year! i have lots of (old) new stuff in my drafts to share in the new year so please keep your love coming x
i'm going to tag @userjiminie @userjungkook97 @btsiu and @cordiallyfuturedwight to do this if they'd like to!

20 Questions More
A deeper and more detailed version of the 20 questions for AO3 fanfic writers. Thanks @eqt-95 for the tag
1) How do you keep getting ideas for your ship/fandom?
I always have too many ideas and not enough time to actually write.
2) Which authors inspire you in your fandom, and why are they so freakishly good?
There are way too many authors to list that I feel like would deserve a mention. I would love to give a huge thank you to all the gifmakers still in the fandom-sphere. I can probably thank gifsets for a lot of my ideas (even if I still haven't actually written them down).
3) Aside from the characters of your main ship, who are the characters you love to write?
Within the Supercorp-sphere, I love writing for Sam. I think because I would have loved to see her stick around longer in the show itself.
4) Are there pairings or tropes you know for sure you'd never write about? Which ones?
I don't want to say any trope is technically off the table but I don't think I'd ever write a true enemies to lovers fic. I slow burn enough as it is, if I tried to write that, I'd never finish it.
5) What is your writing process and why is it cursed?
My editing process is akin to pulling weeds. I like to reduce my word count by maybe 10% on the first edit. Add back maybe 5% more and repeat the process until I'm finally happy with it. Spoiler alert: I'm never happy
6) What is your favorite part of your writing process?
I'm much more a gardener when it comes to writing so I never know where the story will go exactly. So just writing the first draft is always the most fun for me. I sometimes think the characters will act a certain way and they kind of take a life of their own and I'm just along for the ride.
7) What’s the weirdest thing you’ve had to research for a fic?
I remember having to research art forgery for essentially a throwaway line but it really was interesting. E
8) Is there a particular writing rule you struggle with (grammar, spelling, tense, reality in general)?
None in particular, but that's not to say I don't make many many mistakes. I do tend to make tiny changes as I go which means that I've doubled up on some sentences in the past and I am always mortified when I find them after I've already posted the chapter.
9) What was your hardest scene to write so far and why?
Scenes with urgency give me trouble. You want the scene to breathe but you need to be aware that time is short so what the characters can say, what they want to say and what they actually get to say are so different. There was a scene like that in A Rich Girl With Issues that I kind of agonized over. How much should I let Kara and Lena speak to one another, what's important, what should be left unsaid?
10) Have your characters ever done something you didn’t expect, changing your plot completely?
All. The. Time. I never have a plan. I sometimes have scenes I want to write and hope the story veers in that direction so I can write it but it always turns out so different.
11) If you could converse with any of the characters, who would it be and why?
Probably Lena because she's the loml (Apologies to the actual loml)
12) What are some of the tropes or themes that you find yourself returning to in your writing?
I am addicted to pining. Not just pining, angsty pining. I love writing something that's so obvious to everyone else when the characters are so in love or so full of self-loathing that they can't let themselves even begin to imagine their feelings being returned.
13) What's your most important resource as a writer?
Reading. I read voraciously. I'm normally surrounded by books. Some that I pick up to just read anywhere. It's helped me find my voice and it's helped me grow as a writer (at least I think it has)
14) Can you share some of your strategies for editing and revising your work?
I do small edits as I go but nothing major. If a line sticks out that I really don't like then I usually tinker with it before I move on. I think that's not good advice in general but it bothers me too much to ignore. But if you do edit as you go, there's a lot less to polish in the final editing stages.
15) Which is worse: making the summary, picking the tags, or the anxiety when you post your fic?
I hate making the summary. I don't even know what the fic is about, how the hell am I supposed to tell other people?
16) How do you define success for your fanfic - hits? Kudos? Comments? Bookmarks? Or just if you like it?
I feel like my writing is very selfish in a way. They are stories that I want to read and I get enjoyment out of writing them. So every kind comment I get, there's always a sense of wonder because it's so strange that someone else is interested. I truly do cherish every comment and there are many I like to revisit when I'm not feeling so confident in my writing.
17) Do you have a playlist for your favorite character/ship?
I usually make a playlist for each multi-chapter fic. Some fic ideas get their start as a playlist. Please someone ask me about them, I have so many.
18) If fan art was going to be made from your work, which fic would you pick and which fan artist would you like to create it?
I have been very blessed that people have made fan art of my work and I'm still in awe. I could never even begin to describe how touched and honored I am that anybody did that. One of the pieces has been my computer background for ages. It's not an exaggeration that I cherish every single piece. I honestly don't think I could ever adequately describe how much it means to me.
19) How many WIPs do you currently have?
For Supercorp I have 15+ I do plan on actually posting them in the new year.
20) What's your advice to new fanfic writers?
I would say to write for yourself first and foremost. Sharing your art or your writing or even your head canons or ideas takes a lot of courage. It's scary to put something out there that means so much to you. I'd also advise not to get too hung up on hits/kudos/comments etc. I can't say don't look at them because I'd be a hypocrite but I would say to focus on the journey rather than the destination.

gifmaker / cc wrapped 2023
I have been tagged by @soonhoonsol and @khaotunq to post my fave and most popular gif sets I've done in 2023. This is interesting because I got tagged in two different fandoms where in one of them I'm like pretty new in so I have to do a bit of extra mentions and stuff to keep it even :) Thanks to both of you for tagging me, I really appreciate it. Anyway here we go
I actually only gotten back into giffing properly in March and therefore started this tumblr to keep it clean and tidy and all my reblogs and stuff are on my main @lucky-cat-cafe. So for this tag I will have to skip the first two months (You can check my archive if you want to see everything from last year). March: Most popular: Wooyoung & Yunho dancing to “Good Luck” by Beast Favourite: Hyungwon being the cutest most precious bean April: Most popular: a tie between San and Bang Chan Favourite: I think a tie between San and Hyungwon May: Most popular: WooSan by A MILE! This is my most popular post of all year. Can not believe I even have one gif that reached 1k Favourite: Joohoney's Freedom set. Too much effort tho June: Most popular: Changkyun ✦ OVERDRIVE OFFICIAL MV TEASER #2 Favourite: I would say the first two birthday gif sets I did (Shownu & Yeosang). I really like them but after a while it was too much pressure and I stopped them. July: Most popular: Choi San Birthday Gif Set Favourite: Hyungwon August: Most popular: Song Mingi Birthday Gif Set Favourite: Hyungwon September: (The month were I got dragged into a new fandom which I mentioned before haha) Most popular: S.Coups Favourite: Choi San because GAWD!! Special mention: Sand, aka my favourite boy of all time. Fight me! (I never wanted to watch Thai dramas but I have been loyal to First Kanaphan for 4 months now) October: Most popular: FirstKhao (oooh I didn't think I'd have a popular one in that fandom but I forgot about this one) *heart eyes* Favourite: ^this one but to make it fair I'll also choose WooSang because there are a few boys whose smile I absolutely adore and First and Wooyoung are definitely in the top with Kihyun and Yunho November: Most popular: Hongjoong ✧ The World Ep.Fin : Will Official Trailer (will I ever be over this comeback? Probably not) Favourite: Gaipa in Moonlight Chicken Episode 1 (also been loyal to this boy and branching out to other series...look at me go) December: (I did 65 gif set in this month...what is wrong with me lmao) Most popular: Felix ✦ Louis Vuitton Favourite: Yunho and Wooyoung because they are so dear to my heart Well this has been fun. Here's to a good 2024. I will continue as I ended the year. I will not continue the birthday gif sets, which is sad but they take too much effort and time and I need to get back to other things that aren't giffing so I need to slow it down a bit. I will continue my regular gifs the way I have been doing now. There will be more FirstKhao stuff for the people who have started to follow me from the Thai drama side of things and I will continue my rewatch of Only Friends and giffing all the scenes (and other shows once I'm done with that). I will continue my MV series for Ateez and Monsta X and whatever else comes across my radar. Thanks to all the people who have started to follow this blog when I was brand new and for sticking with it. I honestly don't know who I want to tag for this because it's already 2024 and I don't know who has been tagged and who has done it so if you haven't been tagged and want to do this, consider yourself tagged by me. Thanks again to @soonhoonsol and @khaotunq for tagging me 🖤💜

hi, i'm trying my hand at making gifs and i was just wondering what speed you set yours at? also, do you have any like, general tips?
hello! yayy, new gifmaker, we love to see it! here are a few general tips that i could think of:
i usually set my gifs' speed at 0.05. sometimes i'll go up to 0.06 or even 0.07 if i want something a bit more slowed down
the timeline is easier to use than frame animation (imo)
work with smart objects so you can edit the sharpening whenever during the coloring process (which can affect it)
don't oversharpen, one sharpening setting doesn't always universally works for every media or even every scene of the same episode
i usually color from scratch any gif because i find that reusing the same psds for different scenes doesn't really work
always use the highest file quality possible when making screencaps
when you do screencap, capture every frame and don't skip frames, for a smoother look and feel
use the right dimensions for tumblr gifs: 540px wide for large gifs, and 268px wide for small gifs (2 gifs per row)
the curves layer has an automatic setting and it can help when you're trying to color correct something. doesn't always work perfectly, but sometimes it does the heavy lifitng
learn to use actions, they will make your giffing life easier and less repetitive
same with layer masks, they are super useful. not just for creative sets but for coloring as well
be mindful of skintones when you color (sometimes it's easy to whitewash or orangewash someone)
if you work with the timeline, make sure to use the save action here to go back to frame animation and set the right speed. if you render your gif from timeline, it will be automatically set at 0.07. only do this when your gif is done and ready to be saved.
if you are inspired by someone else's work, don't forget to link their creation in the caption
read tutorials! i often go browe @usergif's resource directory when i'm looking for a specific tutorial
don't compare yourself to others and practice practice practice. and remember that gif making should always be fun!!
this is what came to mind! i hope this helps a bit <3 and sorry if these are obvious, not sure where exactly you are in your gifmaking journey~

9, 24 and 27 for the creator asks!
9: Would you say your style has changed a lot since you first started creating? oh for SURE. regardless of what i consider my start bc i used to gif from like 2015-2017 and then i didn't start up again until april of 2023. this time around, i have learned SO much, and i'm sure part of that is just bc of how much gif styles have changed in the last 6-8 years, but also bc i joined a couple gifmaking networks and have gotten so much help through them, found so many resources, and learned tons! to compare, here's one of the sets i was proudest of from Back In The Day. now, it's definitely not horrible, but the coloring and the slow framerate make me borderline homicidal. this one is marginally better, and i remember thinking i was really Doing Something with that typography 😂 here are some of the sets i made early on in my Return to Gifmaking this past April/May. this was one of the first times i'd ever combined multiple gifs into one and girl. what the fuck happened. why are the framerates Like That? what is this typography? i had no business making early l&o gifs 540px wide bc the quality is bad enough at 268px 💀and i think this one is a good example of i got the spirit! the execution just wasn't quite there. i like the main gif with the overlay of the sky, but i'd do the typography very differently and idk if i'd do it in b&w? i could try and remake it tbh, it's been 9 months since i made and posted it.
24: What’s your step by step? How do you organise your editing process? buckle up 😂
make clips of the scene(s) i want to use if i don't already have them
import video frames to layers
action 1: grouping and timing (groups all layers and sets frame rate to 0.05)
delete any extra frames
crop to whatever dimensions i'm using
action 2: sharpening (two smart sharpen layers) + vivid sharpening (i used this tutorial and i usually keep that folder at 30% but sometimes drop it down to 10-15%)
coloring! it depends on what i'm giffing, but i color everything from scratch at least the first time. i save a LOT of my psds, like there's one psd that i use for almost all my tfothou gifs, a couple for hill house depending on the tint of the scene i'm giffing, one for law & order that sometimes needs to be adjusted just a little, one for the good wife, one or two for satc, etc. but they're all psds that i created myself.
typography (if applicable) which almost always involves scrolling through the entire list of fonts just to use one of my go-tos
action 3: this save action from anyataylorjoy
export > save for web!
upload to hellsite (derogatory) and gifsets always immediately go to my drafts, even if i want to post them right away, just so i can make sure i'm happy with everything and try to catch any last-minute mistakes
as for general organization, i'm organized on my computer to a near-ridiculous standard, but it works for me lmao. my psds, templates, and project psds (where i save an entire finished gif if it's for a larger, complex set and then never get rid of them lmao), and all overlays, textures, icons, graphics, transitions, etc. are meticulously organized. my finished gifs are also organized into their own folders.
27: What’s your favourite font to use? in general, monsterrat. i use it for everything in google docs, and it's my fave sans serif to go with serif or script fonts. when i'm using it for giffing, i usually use semibold.

hey i got a question about gifmaking/exporting. So I was working on a gif earlier with more frames and stuff going on and it exported fine with less than 10 mb, yet this gif im working on now with less stuff and frames is clocking in at 18 mb and I'm getting really annoyed. Is there anything I should be doing, or is there any kind of pattern to notice or follow to explain why that's happening? Also, slightly stupider question, but is there a way to preview a gif without going to export, bc it takes so long to load bc my computer hates me. The play button in the timeline just plays it incredibly slow and I can't get a feel for the actual gif.
Hey :)
Don't worry, questions are never stupid!
Yeah, the size of gifs never makes sense. It depends on the size of your original file, your coloring (black and white is really heavy for example), the number of frame, the scenes. I don't know if there's a pattern but the heavier your original file is, the less frames you can use. I would maybe recommend to never import more than 80 frames unless your computer is new or you want to kill it :')
For your second question, i would recommend to use this action pack, you'll have frames again and you'll be able to delete some. At the end of the day, you have to export it to preview it. I even post my gifs privately to see them on my mobile...

thank you so much for answering my question! i really appreciate it!
now i have a follow-up question: should i use 2160p with a bit rate of: 14.9 Mb/s? or stick with 1080p with a bit rate of: 7,849 kb/s?
(you weren't kidding when you said "MediaInfo" was hidden 🔍)
oh, and since the movie just came out it's not available on BluRay yet. but technically a 1080p.BluRay would be the best one to download in the future, right?
yes, i'm using rarbg for a movie. should i be using a different website?👂🏻i'm always down to try new things.
p.s. you're a really good writer. very clear and concise :-)
-music anon
actual image of me right before i sat down to write the answer to this ask. ok let’s get into this!!!! really happy my first answer was helpful 💖 let’s see if i can do it again 🤔
2160p with a bit rate of: 14.9 Mb/s or 1080p with a bit rate of: 7,849 kb/s?
completely up to you, the choice is yours to make! from a technical point of view 4k (2160p) is always better, its bitrate is much higher (since 1Mb is 1024 kb!). from my point of view: i only use them if i want to gif a single scene and i want to make big gifs, or if the scene is really dark. e.g.: here's my druig set (not to self promote 😭💀) everything is giffed in 1080p except the sixth gif. can you REALLY tell the difference? i don't think so... i only needed the 4k here bc it was a really dark scene, so it wasn't too grainy when i made it brighter. but if you're using bigger gifs, the quality really is noticeably better, and you can actually see it! however, my computer is not the best when it comes to handling 4k (really slows down my gifmaking process from screencapping to loading in the caps into ps etc.) so i usually stick with the standard 1080p like 95% of the time. if your computer is better though (and have at least 8gb ram!) this shouldn't be a problem. at least i guess, but when i have a better pc hopefully in the next couple of years i can say for sure.
this is a really long answer idk how to close it jsagdkha maybe try out 4k, see how your pc can handle it and stick with it if goes well! but i think it requires different kind of sharpening technique bc whenever i used 4k video it never looked that sharp? or idk not sure about this, since i don't use them that often.
verdict: 2160p is always better but usually much slower (if you don’t have a good pc)
(we could also sit here all day and talk about how they use different codecs (x264 for 1080p and x265 for 2160p) but i feel like that would just confuse you at this point (since some 1080p videos also have x265 codecs lmao) and this information is not THAT important tbh. but if you want to, we can absolutely have that conversation next time you’re here!)
is 1080p.BluRay the best?
well yes, but actually no. BluRay.REMUX is the best. remux simply means that it’s untouched and lossless media file, without any compression. i don’t usually bother with this cause they can be really big files (up to 100gb and worse lmao) and i don’t have all day waiting for it to download. blurays are honestly perfectly good and fine as they are, no need for a remux. also, not every media has a remux! and you have to wait for someone to even upload it for a very long time! so yeah, bluray is your best bet! BUT and i can’t stress this enough, be aware that warez groups (they are the ones who do the nice work for you and upload torrents) sometimes compress their bluray files. like for example i just searched up ghostbuster afterlife and there are at least eight different 1080p bluray files there, some is only 2gb but others are 40gb. again, if the file seems too small don’t even look at it, it’s probably compressed to hell. e.g.: ghostbusters afterlife comparison here:
1080p.BluRay.x265-RARBG - size: 1.93 GB - bitrate: 2 001 kb/s
1080p.BluRay.x264 - 12.53 GB - bitrate: 9 594 kb/s
1080p.BluRay.REMUX - size: 35.14 GB - bitrate: 26.9 Mb/s
that is a HUGE difference!! the bigger the file the better the bitrate! so, yeah, look out for size and bitrate, both are important, even if it says bluray in the title, don’t just download it right off the bat.
so the hierarchy of files in short: - bluray remux - bluray (sometimes also called BDrip) - web-dl - web-rip - HDrip (pls never use this)
is rarbg good?
yes! (except its search engine* which is literally drunk all the time 🥴) it’s one of the best torrent sites out there tbh with you. especially if you want something that just came out. seeds are usually good so downloads are fast. i can also recommend torrentgalaxy or 1337x. however, if you’re searching for something older rarbg is not the best since older files aren’t seeded well. i use rutracker if i want something a little bit older. now, this is a russian site and i can explain how to use it if you want to (bc you need to have an account there if you want to use it, and the site is in russian, obviously) but i don’t want to go into this rn cause this is a whole another deal, and this answer is so long already 💀
*pro tip for using rarbg search, if you don’t already know this: instead of just typing in the name of the movie/show into the search bar (which can bring out totally unrelated things), first search it up on imdb, and then in the url copy the part that starts with “tt” and looks something like this “tt0361748″ (this is inglorious basterds, btw), and now copy this into the search bar of rarbg. you’re going to get much more accurate results!
