since I've seen it talked about in several places recently:

if you are going to do a whump- or kink- or ANY-tober or other similar challenges please please please don't post them as one fic with 31 chapters unless it actually is one coherent fic. if they're 31 completely separate fics or ficlets then please just make a collection for them or just post them as separate fics. it doesn't matter if they're only 100 words or if you think they're too small or insignificant to post alone, they're not.

and why this?

because if you post all 31 of them in one fic the tagging is absolutely useless. if I look for things to read on ao3 I'm gonna look at the tags, and if the tags include something that's a dealbreaker for me, i won't even click on the fic. I might not even SEE the fic because I've filtered out the nope-tag! so I'm gonna lose out on reading 30 perfectly nice fics because of one fic that my nope-tag applied to.

ao3 is about archiving. it's about clear tagging and being informative. there is nothing informative about it if the tags in the fic apply to random chapters while others have nothing to do with it. it makes so much more sense to have each work as an individual fic with its own individual tags and warnings, so readers can make informed choices.

of course, you do you. I can't police what other people decide to do. but personally, I find it incredibly frustrating to weed through 31 chapters to find the ones I actually want to read. so I don't. I automatically scroll past all works posted like that. and I know some others do, too.

there is absolutely no shame in posting short things on ao3. there is no minimum word count. no one is going to look at you funny if you post a small ficlet on its own, I promise. it's just going to make some readers very happy when they can actually find the things they want to read.

so, please. at least consider the upsides of posting each work as their own fic.

hey if you feel comfortable explaining publicly, why are you a proshipper? i don't feel strongly one way or the other and i'm just wondering what your perspective is. no pressure and i don't mean to be invasive or anything like that! just curious :)

It's alright! I personally don't really participate in ships most people would consider "problematic" (unless we're counting enemies to lovers), which I think is part of the reason why it took me so long to even bother investigating the issue and forming an opinion in the first place. "Proship" just means I don't believe in things like lolicon or incest fic or whatever most people agree is gross or bad irl (though irl it would be pedophilia not fetish which is completely disgusting and assault to be absolutely clear) should be wiped off the Internet.

Why do I believe this? Well, for one, lobbing accusations at fic writers hurts real victims. I won't go too heavily into the watering down of terms like "pedophile" and "rapist", but it's been especially bad in the past few years, even outside this kind of discourse that most non-fandom people don't even know about.

Also, many rape victims, especially those assaulted as children, suffer from intense "taboo" sexual urges and/or distressing intrusive thoughts (especially compounded by things like OCD). Most therapists would agree that fanfiction is a good place to explore this! As long as it's properly tagged, you have a very low chance of hurting anyone else, and thoughts like this don't just "go away" if you ignore them, no matter how much antis would like that to be the case.

Okay, but not everyone who reads this type of stuff is a victim, right? Some of them are definitely just doing it to get off. You are absolutely right to think that! As I said before, I'm not a part of these "problematic" incest or shotacon or whatever communities, but even I, "uninformed" as I am, wouldn't make such an obviously false claim. So, here's the way I think about it:

1) first and most importantly, there is no evidence-based link between reading incest or loli/underage whatever to being an actual abuser or rapist in real life, as of the last time I checked (like a few weeks ago). If any antis are hiding some sort of peer-reviewed study I'm not aware of, I'd be happy to talk about it, though. You can say "it's common sense" all you want, but personally, I'll take the scientific process over that any day.

2) like exploring trauma, fanfiction (and, to an extent, things like animated hentai or whatever) is most likely the safest space to BE if someone is truly "attracted" to lolicon or shotacon. It's the only porn that's guaranteed not to be exploitative, because only one person (the author) is involved in making it.

merthur fic prompt - blind

It was supposed to be a normal day. A normal patrol. A normal group of bandits attacking them in the woods.

Until it wasn't.

Until one of the bandits, dying from blood loss as he grasped onto the wound on his side, shouted in a language that was not their own The Language of Old. Magic.

Arthur closed his eyes, preparing himself for the oncoming blast

Then, he felt nothing. No changes. He wasn't thrown in the air or punched by an invisible force.

He opened his eyes and glanced around. The sorcerer bandit was on the floor, dead. It seems that was his last breath.

That's when Arthur saw Merlin. His manservant was standing in between himself and the sorcerer, arms crossed in front of his eyes.

"Merlin?" The king asked, fear evident in his voice.

Merlin turned towards the sound of his name being called. He'd removed his arms from his face but kept blinking as if to push away the fog from his eyes.

"Arthur?" Merlin responded meekly. His head kept turning from side to side like he wasn't sure where he was supposed to be looking at. "Arthur?!" Merlin called out again, this time reaching out with his hand towards the direction he'd presumed Arthur was in. His hand grasped onto hair, dropping lamely against his side.

The young king crossed the few steps separating them. Merlin became even more agitated. “Where…?” His eyes were glossy and glazed over, unfocused.

Arthur’s dread grew, but he had to know. "Merlin. I'm here. Are-" He clearly wasn’t alright. He took Merlin's hands into his own. "I'm here, Merlin. What's wrong?"

Merlin grasped Arthur’s hands tighter, clinging to him like a drop of water in a parched desert. His eyes were growing wet, and soon, among sobs, tears started to rain down his cheeks.

“My eyes…” Merlin gulped down another sob. “Arthur, I can’t see.”

I’m not the sort of person who will tell others what they can and can not create in regards to fictional characters. But for my own comfort I have the Blankshipping tag blocked. But Tumblr is still constantly recommending obvious Blankshipping blogs and pieces? Am I doing something wrong? Or does the algorithm just kind of stink?
