Something I never hear anyone talk about in the 'why are Young Adults (late teens to early 30s) reading so much Young Adult (teens) fiction These Days' discussion is how surprisingly difficult it can be to transition from kids books to adult fiction.
And I don't mean in terms of content. Forget themes, characters, plots, etc. I'm talking pure practicality.
As a kid, most of the books you read are calibrated to you exactly. Your local library likely has a 'children's' section, and that section is likely split into smaller sub-sections based on age group. 0-5, 5-8, 8-12, teen. A lot of your interests and experiences are pretty easy to guess at based on average developmental stages (eg. most 16-18 year olds will relate to Coming Of Age stories), so it's probably pretty easy for you to walk into a bookshop or library and find a book aimed at you specifically.
But get to 18 (or younger) and start straying into the 'adult' section, and suddenly nothing is calibrated anymore. When people complain that all 'grownup fiction' is about white middle class heterosexual couples going through angsty divorces in their mid-forties, this is what they're complaining about. They can't find books they can personally relate to, or that are about topics that they are interested in.
And yeah, sure, books shouldn't have to be relatable to be good or enjoyable. But there's also nothing wrong with wanting to read a book about young people, when you're young. Or queer people, if you're queer. Or people from your particular culture, religion, or ethnicity.
Even if we ignore the relatability aspect entirely, there's also nothing wrong with wanting to read a fantasy book that isn't just 'Tolkien but drearier' or a sci-fi that wasn't written by some guy in the 1960s who thought that women were just another kind of alien.
The problem is, fundamentally, that finding the books you like amid the haystack is a skill that most people are not being taught.
As a result, when they get past YA and try using the old tricks of just picking up whatever is on the bestseller list at the moment, or whatever their local library is currently touting as their 'book of the week', they frequently end up with something that isn't suited to their tastes.
And maybe they love it and it opens up a whole new genre that they'd never considered, but more often they hate it but feel obliged to slog through because this is a 'grownup book' and they have decided they want to be a 'grownup reader'.
A few times being burned like this, and they come to the conclusion that all adult fiction is boring, and that the people who read it are all either mature geniuses of the type they could only hope to be, or slogging through like they were and only pretending to like it.
Thus they run back to the familiarity of YA—which is fine, to be clear, there's nothing actually wrong with reading YA as an adult— but there's every chance that somewhere on the bookshelves is a potential favourite author of theirs that they will now never know because they were never taught how to find them.

How MHA characters comfort you when your friend cancels on you
Ft. Izuku Midoriya, Katsuki Bakugou, Eijirou Kirishima, Shoto Todoroki
(this may or may not be because my friend recently canceled plans we had ( ̄^ ̄))
Izuku Midoriya:
Midoriya would kind of panic at first. He doesn't want to say anything about it that could possibly make you more upset. So, he would try his best to distract you from it entirely. He’d talk to you about his notebooks, rambling on about all his notes until he gets to a specific page. He’ll look at you with an anxious smile and show you the page. It turns out to be a whole page dedicated to you and your quirk.
“I just want you to know that I would love to hang out with you more and be able to fill out even more of this notebook.”
Katsuki Bakugou:
Bakugou would be more aggressive if he found out your friend canceled on you. If you two were close friends and, let’s face it, you’d probably have to be close friends for him to say anything to you in the first place. He’d try his best to try and reassure you it’s not your fault. But, considering this is Bakugou, his idea of reassurance is him calling your friend an extra and saying that you were slightly less of an extra.
“Tch, that extra is just an idiot. They’re not worth your time. Come on, let’s go train. You’re the only one here who remotely even stands a chance against me.”
Eijirou Kirishima:
Like Midoriya, Kirishima would try his best to comfort you. Although, I think he’d take a more active approach. He’d offer to do something with you instead, like going to a corner shop and getting some snacks or wandering around the wooded area around U.A. He’d try his best to make you laugh or smile. He’ll tell you stories about funny times his quirk backfired on him or about his internship with FatGum.
“I know you were upset that your friend canceled. But, hey! We’ve had a ton of fun today. I hope we can spend more time like this together!”
Shoto Todoroki:
Todoroki doesn't really say much when you tell him. He's not trying to come off as callous. It’s simply because he doesn’t know how to comfort someone in this situation. So he’d try his best to reassure you by just being close. He’ll sit however close you allow him to and maybe offer his hand if you want to hold it. He doesn’t want to say anything that might make you upset so when he does talk he chooses his words carefully.
“I’m sorry about your friend. I know I might not be the best with words but I just want you to know that I really enjoy your company. I want to be able to spend more time with you if you'd let me.”

can't believe how often it happens, that i make a plan ahead of time which i can't follow in the moment and
(due to fatigue, pain, executive dysfunction, whatever)
i spend hours leading up to that moment becoming more and more aware of the fact that it's not going to work like i planned
and i try to force myself to make it work, to get up, to calculate the minutes left
until finally i realize that i need to adapt, to let it go and make a different plan, a gentler one
in that moment, settling into the change, i let out a breath and feel the tension in my clenched jaw and hunched shoulders and that needing-to-cry ache behind the eyes and i'm just like
damn dude you need to cut yourself some slack. you need to chill. you need to give yourself the same grace and accommodation you would give to a friend in your circumstances

You know I used to think "tumblr's absolute refusal to actually engage with the Trolley Problem in favor of insisting that there must be a third, morally pure option that doesn't require them to make a hard decision and anyone who asks them to make a binary choice is just a short-sighted idiot is really fucking annoying, but I guess it's not actually doing any harm".
Anyway that was before we asked tumblr at large to decide between "guy aiding a genocide but making progress elsewhere" and "guy who would actively and enthusiastically participate in a genocide and would also make everything else much, much worse for everyone elsewhere" and the response was that there must be a third, morally pure option that doesn't require them to make a hard decision and that anyone who asks them to make a binary choice is a short-sighted idiot.

As a reminder that good exists out there, a coworker recently confessed to me that he found out his child is questioning their identity (kid's gender redacted for this post). The kid is keeping it from him, so he can't say anything to them or show that he knows, but he's doing his best to get mentally prepared and educated so that he'll be ready whenever his kid does feel comfortable enough come to him.
For context, this guy is a big, bulky middle aged dude who loves sports and typical outdoor "manly" activities. As his coworker and friend, I know he's a kind and sweet teddy bear of a person, but his kid probably views him as a stern, authoritarian figure, the way most teenagers view their parents. His family lives in a conservative area, so I'm sure between that, their dad's looks and interests, and the fact that their dad is a Figure of Authority, the kid is worried that they won't be accepted.
But you know what? When he found out about his kid, the first thing he did was reach out to his closest queer friend and ask for resources for parents of questioning children. His biggest fears are that his kid will be bullied or discriminated against and won't feel comfortable enough to be themself. His second action was to find himself a mentor in another parent who went the same situation (kid coming out in a conservative town). The other person is preparing him for some of the struggles his kid may face and the fights he may need to take on as a parent to make sure his kid is safe and treated well.
Something I want to emphasize for people focused on language as the primary method of allyship is that when we spoke, he used some outdated terms and thoughts about gender and sexuality. That does not make him bad. These were the terms and thinking used about questioning teenagers when he was growing up and he never needed to learn more current ones. But now that he does have that need, he's throwing himself in head first because that's his kid and he's darn well going to make sure that his kid feels welcomed and has a safe place to be themselves even if they never come out to him.

Nothing will dispell the "the curtains were just blue" myth faster than writing something yourself, because the amount of pretentious symbolism i am putting in my silly little fanfics is ridiculous. I mean SO much with these words, literally every single one of them. This fic has twenty five typos and zero correct uses of punctuation but if there's curtains you bet your ass I put thought into what colour they were.

large zionist blocklist below
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
i've compiled a list of all the blogs positively interacting with the @/israel-palestine-bingo blog
there's more info about how the names were complied under the read more, but just to get an idea of how vile the blog is, i just want to quickly mention that the first prize offered in their pinned post, "eight hours of memi mamtera," is the song used in the viral israeli tiktok trend of kidnapping, humiliating, and torturing palestinians in the west bank.
and the "grand prize," which needs no explanation, is "all of palestine! for free!"
some quick info: all the names here have either approvingly replied to, reblogged from, or liked one or more of @/israel-palestine-bingo's posts. for likes, i've only gathered names that appear under their original posts; mostly ones that have not been reblogged, and some with 2-3 reblogs that have not left the immediate sphere of zionists. i've also made sure that these are blogs who have either liked more than one posts from them, or who frequently reblogs from other zionists.
you can also quickly look through the blog yourself (it doesn't have that many posts), or check out any of the names on the list with a quick 'israel' or 'palestine' in the search bar or their blogs.
there are more screenshots at the end of the posts, including ones showing who made the blog (ani-lo-daredevil / katenotbishop), and the bingo board itself (ashenpumpkin).
blocking tip: fastest way to mass block users (on desktop) is to go to settings -> the blog your blocking them from -> scroll all the way down to 'blocked tumblrs,' and then copy-paste the name your blocking
names listed below in alphabetical order reminder again, block don't engage

"terfs like trans men!" "trans men don't have to worry about terfs!"
Oh I'm sorry wasn't there a big thing throughout 2020-2022 where everyone was all like "little girls are mutilating their bodies!", "what happened to our lesbians!?", "scared women are pretending to be men.", and so on? Wasn't there a literal book that talked about trans men, talking about them as if they were innocent girls who were lied to and thus were destroying themselves because of it, saying how we needed to 'save them from the hypnotization!"? Weren't there numerous bloggers/youtubers who made commentary videos in reaction to Elliot Page coming out, and proceeded to rant and rave how we are losing such beautiful women and lesbians to the "transgender agena"? What about the time where it was trending to fakeclaim trans people, whom most of the targets of this were trans men? How about when people called trans men 'dykes' because "well they're not actual men, they're just confused lesbians!"?
Do I need to add more, or do you guys understand?
