I am really fond of redemption arcs in general and haven’t encountered many I disliked, but I saw someone go off about how Mansfield Park (which I personally love) could have been Austen’s masterpiece ... if only she had redeemed Henry Crawford.
Not to pull out my old gif collection BUT
#i genuinely have no beef with henry crawford fans in general nor henry/fanny shippers specifically#beyond disliking the latter myself#(the ship not the shippers)#i'm a mary stan and i actually think henry and mary's relationship is very charming in its fucked up way#but the artistic merit of mp resting entirely on henry's redemption or lack thereof??? please#also i feel like austen's extremely consistent hostility towards casually exploitative and careless domestic wrongs#is very present in the treatment of henry in mp#and treating henry as somehow not a legitimate target of that hostility despite his carelessness towards three different women#two of whom he loves insofar as he loves anyone#is missing the point of his character#the specific commenter turned out to be a right-wing blatherer anyway but i've seen it a lot and NO#anghraine rants#austen blogging#austen fanwank#/#//#///#////#/////#a#b#c#d#e#henry crawford#gif
