I'll Follow the Sun's 15 words in Tune In
Following along with AKOM I was struck by this page as I was passing it, so just out of curiosity I googled to see what I could find out about "I'll Follow the Sun" that would have been available before Lewisohn wrote Tune In, and what could Lewisohn have done with his prose for this song?
Tumblr media
From Beatles Music History website:
"I wrote that in my front parlour in Forthlin Road. I was about 16," McCartney stated in an interview. This would date the song as being written as far back as 1958. He continues, "So, 'I'll Follow The Sun' was one of those very early ones. I seem to remember writing it just after I'd had the flu...I remember standing in the parlour looking out through lace curtains of the window and writing that one."
There is a recording in existence (available on bootlegs) of the early Beatles, known then as The Quarrymen, performing the song. The electric guitar arrangement features Paul, John and George on guitar with Stuart Sutcliffe on bass and presumably Tommy Moore on drums. According to McCartney, who purchased the tape from Peter Hodgson in 1995, the recording dates back to April of 1960 and was made in the bathroom of his home at 20 Forthlin Road during a school holiday. McCartney's recollection of the "middle eight" being re-written before they recorded it professionally is confirmed by this early rough recording, because the lyrics of this middle section appears to say "Well, don't leave me alone, I need you/ Now hurry and follow me, my dear."
Tune In:
“I’ll Follow the Sun.” Paul came up with this rhythmic ballad alone, words and music, on his Zenith guitar.
There's a very good story and all we get is "rhythmic ballad on his Zenith guitar"? But all that about a John song that doesn't even really seem like a John song?
It does get a bit more ink in Chapter 15 when Lewisohn talks about the bootleg, but I can't see anyone who loves writing about where songs come from as much as Lewisohn does passing up all the history of one of their most beloved songs that a bootleg even exists for. A bootleg with different lyrics, that he never mentions! There's just a lot on this song that he could've done so much with, and although I wrote before that I don't think Lewisohn is actually trying to settle scores, I am now genuinely starting to wonder.
Lewisohn on "I'll Follow the Sun" in the bootleg:
There’s also the earliest-available recordings of “One After 909,” “I’ll Follow the Sun” and “Hello Little Girl.” “One After 909” is clearly a diamond in the rough, polished by John and Paul’s attractive harmonizing. “I’ll Follow the Sun” is Paul alone, guitar and voice, save for someone (probably John) slapping a guitar case.
Tumblr media
I'll say this, once you start noticing the attention to detail and real estate, you really start noticing. I had focused on the jealousy footnotes early on in my reading because it stood out to me so much, and once I realized how few were supported I was awestruck and started digging more, but I hadn't given thought or attention to the broader comparisons.
Tumblr media
Absolutely blown away, tbh. I am less enamored of the space comparisons in general because they're more subjective than just the, "What, he's saying Paul was jealous because he wanted to be out front and he hated Stu from a quote saying 'I was playing the drums with a broomstick between my legs and it wasn't easy"??" But although they're harder to point out, they are most certainly there, and there to a truly unpardonable extent. This one blew my ass away.
Honestly, WTF?
Since I referenced it, the "Paul's jealousy was stoked because he was unhappy because he liked exhibiting versitility and nobody looked at the drummer and did I mention he was jealous?" pages below.

Well I suppose that you could say that we were playing hard to get
I’ll Follow the Sun (1964): One day, you'll look / To see I've gone / For tomorrow may rain, so / I'll follow the sun | Someday, you'll know / I was the one / But tomorrow may rain, so / I'll follow the sun | And now the time has come / And so, my love, I must go / And though I lose a friend / In the end, you will know, oh
Teddy Boy (1968): Then came the day she found herself a man / Teddy turned and ran / Far away, okay | He couldn’t stand to see his mother in love / With another man / He didn’t know, oh no
Yvonne’s the One (1985): Yvonne’s the one I’ve been counting on / She said, hold on / You’re not the only one / And so I said so long Yvonne
-
I’ll Be Back (1964): I thought that you would realize / That if I ran away from you / That you would want me too / But I got a big surprise
Nowhere Man (1965): He’s as blind as he can be / Just sees what he wants to see / Nowhere man, can you see me at all?
Jealous Guy (1971): I was trying to catch your eyes / Thought that you was trying to hide
-
Only Love Remains (1985): And if you take your love away from me / I'm only going to want it back / I'll probably pretend I didn't see / But knowing me, I'll want you back again
I’ll Follow the Sun (1960): One day, you'll look / To see I've gone / For tomorrow may rain, so / I'll follow the sun | Someday, you'll know / I was the one / But tomorrow may rain, so / I'll follow the sun | Well, don’t leave me alone, my dear / Have courage and follow me, my dear

I'll Follow The Sun
This recording is from the second Forthlin Road tape, recorded in June/July 1960.
This song would eventually be released on Beatles For Sale. The verses of the original are basically the same, but the bridge is totally different (lyrics and melody).
But the bassline is the same.
This is really interesting, because while the bassline in this version isn’t very loud, once you hear it, it is noticeably more complex than Stu’s usual playing. It’s not a very difficult line to play, so we assume it is being played by Stu, but was more than likely written by Paul. This is suggested by the complexity, and supported by the fact that he kept that bassline for the album version of the song.
The lyrics of the original bridge are:
Well don’t leave me alone out here Have courage and follow me my dear
(Both lines do not end in "my dear" as previously assumed, more on that later).
This is thematically very similar to In Spite Of All the Danger and You Must Write Every Day: needing courage, and being left alone. We believe that John living in Gambier terrace was looming large for Paul at this time, so that may be related. It also has an interesting echo in a much later song.
Here is the Beatles For Sale version for comparison:
youtube
If Paul was already writing basslines at this stage then maybe he was more familiar with the instrument than is usually assumed. This may be an early example of him “muscling in” on another band member’s territory, and could have contributed to the tensions between Paul and Stu. It is also possible that Paul is actually playing the bass here, but we can’t know whether this line was within Stu’s capabilities. Klaus, Pete, and Paul have all defended Stu’s playing, while acknowledging that it was basic.
Paul writing basslines and giving them to Stu could also have fed the idea that he was trying to take over the bass player role. We believe Paul when he says he didn’t want to play bass, but it could have looked a certain way to others.
Mike can also be heard playing ‘drums’ on a guitar case.
There's a short clip that precedes this song on the 2007 bootleg called Strong Before Our Birth, included here for interest:
As far as we can tell this is John (though we considered Paul) putting on a Spike Milligan style silly voice, saying "I need de sun, I do". The "I do" could be Paul, even if the beginning is John.

Paul has a lot of songs that are about being in love with the wrong person. Not that he thinks the person is wrong but everyone else does.
Starting with "In Spite of All The Danger"
Why is being with this person dangerous? I mean, by the second verse, it could be said that the person is going to hurt him, but it could also be that being together is dangerous for whatever reason. Romeo and Juliet kinda story.
Then we have "I'll Follow the Sun"
By the time it was released, Paul or Paul and John changed the middle 8, but it started as:
Don't leave me alone, my dear, have courage and follow me my dear
Not the best lyrics, especially the "my dear" repetition, but I digress.
Why does this person need courage to follow you? What is courageous about running after you and staying with you?
And finally, though I'm sure there are many more examples "The Back Seat of my Car"
Which has the repeated line of:
Oh oh, we believe that we can't be wrong
The song is basically about teenage car sex and looking back on something that was or a wishful thinking of the past.
Why would other people think it was wrong? And why do you need to clarify that it's not?
I am of the mind that Paul was in love with John long before John felt the same way. I think these songs are all about being in love with a boy, the first two, not only a boy but a boy who didn't love him back, the last one, a boy he could have had, maybe, but didn't and all the crap that would have come with that.
I'm sure there are many other songs of Paul talking about his relationship being wrong, feel free to add them.

LECTURE 8: ROCK AND ROLL MUSIC: The beautiful and beloved Beatles ballad (how’s that for alliteration??) “I’ll Follow the Sun” (1964), is an example of a song originally conceived of and written in the 1950s by a member of the band that later went on to become a successful song for The Beatles. The song turned up on the band’s 1964 album Beatles for Sale, yet its origins predate that album by about five years. Paul McCartney wrote the song when he was 16 going on 17 in the front parlour of his house at 20 Forthlin Road, sometime in 1959. It’s a gentle and reflective song, sweet and full of heart, simple without being simplistic. An early recording of the song dates back to the spring of 1960. But the version heard here is the revised “I’ll Follow the Sun” that was on Beatles For Sale. Asked about the song twenty years later, in 1980, John Lennon was all-too happy to give Paul credit for it:  “That’s Paul again. Can’t you tell? I mean, ‘Tomorrow may rain so I’ll follow the sun.’ That’s another early McCartney. You know, written almost before The Beatles, I think. He had a lot of stuff…”
