“I yearn to know the people I love deeply and intimately-without context, without boxes—and I yearn for them to know me that way, too.”
I can definitely relate to using humor as a coping mechanism. Thankfully, I never had to deal with any of the shit she did.

No like because the way I read “I’m glad my mom died” in less than 6 hours… but now I can’t watch “quiet on set” is kinda upsetting to me…
I wanna watch it
(I might just end up caving and buying some random streaming service)

I’ve just finished Jennette McCurdy’s book and there’s a quote about comparing bulimia to anorexia and it’s really hit me
‘Anorexia is regal, in control, all powerful. Bulimia is out of control, chaotic, pathetic, poor mans anorexia’
Because I was bulimic for 2 years and that’s exactly how I felt. It really hit home how idealised anorexia was, and how bulimia felt embarrassing and second best.
And whilst obviously heartbreaking to read someone else felt that way, it was really impactful to resonate with someone.

I just finished reading Jennette McCurdy’s book “I’m Glad My Mom Died”, and as the child of a narcissistic mother, I get it.
That first realization that everything you believed about your mother is a lie, that all she did was abuse you, that none of it was for your benefit but her own. The epiphany, the pain, the earth shattering heart break that comes with realizing that the person meant to take care of you actually did the opposite.
Jennette is such a great writer, and she conveys the pain and guilt of being raised by a narcissist so well, the feeling of responsibility over their emotions and well being, how much you try to justify and excuse their actions because that’s what they taught you to do, the codependency, being emotionally stunted, the fear, the need to solve their problems and so much more.
Honestly, I’m glad her mom died too. I’m glad Jennette is recovering and learning how to cope in a health way. I genuinely hope she is doing well and living her best life, the life that was robbed from her, the life she deserved all along.
I hope we all recover.

“I don’t like knowing people in the context of things. Oh, that’s the person I work out with. That’s the person I’m in a book club with. That’s the person I did that show with. Because when that context ends, so does the friendship. I yearn to know the people I love deeply and intimately —without context, without boxes— and I yearn for them to know me that way too.”

We could leave the Christmas lights up ‘til January: Read a book you didn’t get to last year
-I’m Glad My Mom Died by Jennette McCurdy
[This was such a great memoir! Jennette has a great writing style, which is easy to read. It was so interesting to see her journey from how her career started to where she is today.]

i know this is outside of my usual genre but i made this blog to talk about books so whatever. i just finished i’m glad my mom died by jennette mccurdy. i listened on audible and it was narrated by jennette which was really a compelling way to hear her story, straight from her own mouth. i would consider it a must read. in fact, even though it was the last book i finished in 2023, i would consider it the most important. it is uncomfortable and depressing, but so brave of her to share. she describes in detail how child stardom enables child abuse. even if you usually only read fiction, step outside of your zone for this one. it’s worth it. lastly, jennette mccurdy, i wish you nothing but peace and blessings for the rest of your life. i admire the woman that you are.
