hi! because the sims 4 base game is officially free for everyone, i’m gonna list all the mods i use/recommend + cc creators i usually download from to make your game more interesting if base game is all you can own for now. or if you already own several packs and you just want to know what i use!

before you continue:

how to install cc and mods;

be mindful: the more mods and cc you install, the more likely your game is to lag or even break;

some of the mods and cc listed here contain adult (18+) content. view and download at your own discretion;

most mods require updates after game updates, meaning you might need to download new versions of the mods you’ve installed after a game update;

not all mods and cc will be suited for only base game, some might require more dlc. make sure what you’re adding to your game is compatible with the packs you own;

read ALL the information provided by the creators listed;

being familiar with certain modding/the sims 4 terms can be useful here but if you have any questions i can try to answer them for you :)

ps: these are mods and cc i like to use for my personal gameplay style. you might have different tastes and be interested in different mods and cc, of course! so feel free to explore as much as you want until you find what you like!

MODS:

CAS:

more columns in cas by weerbesu: adds more columns to the items menu for easier browsing when you have a lot of content (dlc or cc).

more cas presets by zerbu: without this mod, the game offers a very limited amount of options for body and face presets. this mod adds 100+ more options for these categories, all extracted from the game itself meaning they don’t count as cc.

custom cas background: i currently use this sims 2 background; installing custom cas background is the same as installing cc or mods but i recommend creating a separate folder for your current cas background so you can keep track of it and easily replace it.

shadow remover by xurbansimsx: removes the shadow below your sim in cas. ideal for when you use custom cas backgrounds.

BUILD/BUY:

better build/buy by twistedmexi: better ways to organize and find cc or debug items in the build/buy catalog. for easier browsing when you have a lot of content (dlc or cc).

no weather build/buy by twistedmexi: (requires the seasons expansion pack) gets rid of weather elements such as snow and rain when you enter build/buy mode.

GAMEPLAY:

mc command center by deaderpool: expands functionality for a variety of gameplay aspects. one of the most popular mods because it allows you to control more aspects of gameplay with ease. i recommend reading deaderpool’s website carefully and watching tutorials if needed for a better understanding of the mod. make sure you’re downloading modules that are compatible with the dlc you own.

slice of life by kawaii stacie: adds more realistic situations and events to your sims daily life such as personality, illness, parties, social interactions, etc. you can choose to disable certain features.

ui cheats by weerbesu: allows you to manually cheat by directly clicking on the user interface instead of typing on the cheats bar. all the ways you can use this mod are listed on weerbesu’s page.

(+18) wicked whims by turbodriver: this mod contains explicit adult content that is not suited for players younger than 18 or anyone who is uncomfortable with nudity and graphic sex visuals. only proceed if you’re over 18 years of age and at your own discretion. you’ve been fairly warned. this mod adds detailed and explicit sex gameplay. more animations can be downloaded separately. read turbodriver’s website carefully for more information and further instructions.

MISC:

ts4 mod manager by gametimedev: software that allows you to manage, organize or delete the mods and cc you have installed. useful if you have a lot of cc or broken cc you wanna delete but don’t know the file name.

reshade: it’s a software that allows you to change the color and shades of your game’s graphics (works for more than just sims 4). not an immediate must-have and it took me several tutorials (try this one by misslollypopsims) to understand how to properly use it lmao then it took me more time to find and and adjust a preset exactly the way i liked it, but i really like the results!

CC:

first let’s understand the difference between alpha and maxis match cc:

alpha cc tends to be more detailed, trying to give more realistic traits (like flowy hair, detailed ruffles, etc). this style doesn’t match maxis cartoon-style graphics for the sims 4 and can look out of place;

maxis match cc like the term says, matches maxis graphics and tend to look like they belong in the game, as if maxis had made that content.

you can download whatever type of cc you like, you don’t have to stick to only one of these styles. feel free to explore as you please!;

however, the creators listed here provide mostly maxis match content because i prefer this style;

also, the creators listed here provide mostly cas cc, but some also may occasionally provide build/buy custom creations;

more things:

read the information and instructions provided by each creator before downloading any cc;

some cc might require certain dlc you may not own;

bgc = base game compatible; you don’t need any dlc!;

some creators listed here may provide content that’s not suitable for players younger than 18! explore and download at your discretion;

IMPORTANT:

most links redirect to the creator’s patreon page 

some cc might not be available for free, as creators can put their content behind a paywall for a limited amount of time (around 2-3 weeks) following ea guidelines; 

cc cannot be put behind permanent paywalls as it goes against ea’s guidelines and copyrights.

however it’s okay for cc creators to make money off their creation if people are willing to financially support them in exchange for early access to their content!

other ways to find cc:

the sims resource: a website that hosts a variety of cc for all sims games. you can find more alpha and build/buy cc and it’s a trustworthy website (at least the most trustworthy out of all the cc hosting websites). however it also displays a lot of ads, gives you a countdown to download content and keeps shoving a paid subscription in your face so it can be quite annoying to download from there. also it’s hard to know what’s the future of tsr considering ea just announced an official platform for the sims 4 cc (they’ll likely survive but might suffer some loss, but we still can’t be sure).

tumblr: using tags such as #ts4cc #ts4mm will lead you to more creators and options than the ones listed here. however anyone can post anything using those tags so 1) you might see unrelated content and 2) be careful for viruses and weird links. avoid adfly links.

youtube: look for cc showcase/shopping videos! simmers will often show you what cc they have or got for their game and will link the creators and websites they’ve used!

IN SUMMARY:

read everything about the mod or cc you want in your game before downloading them; 

more cc = more problems, don’t download too much content if your computer/laptop can’t handle it and regularly clean up your mods folder;

there’s nothing i can do about console players, i’m very sorry;

dlc can make the game more interesting so if you want/can get more dlc do some research on what each different pack or kit provides!

no, i don’t know how to pirate the sims 4 but i won’t not encourage it if you find a trustworthy source ;)

be on the look out for mods updates after every game update! outdated mods can break your game!;

SMAPI & Modding Guide

🍒Mandatory Mods: these are the ones that make the pretty/gameplay mods work.

❤Stardew Modding API aka SMAPI: The mod loader for Stardew Valley. Will have it's own pop up window upon launching the game: do not close it, this is how you run modded Stardew. It will also tell you what mods aren't working, what needs an update, etc. Most mandatory, most helpful.

🧡Generic Mod Config Menu: Adds an in-game UI to edit other mods' config options. Will be shown on title screen at the bottom left as a gear icon.

💛Content Patcher, Alternative Textures, Json Assets, SpaceCore are the most common mods that make the fun mods work. If you're downloading mods, 9/10 times you're gonna need these.

💚Farm Type Manager, Custom Farm Loader, Fashion Sense, Faux Core, Portaiture, are probably second most used and are for more specific mods (farm layout mods, custom appearance, etc).

🍄Gameplay Mods

💙Skip Fishing Minigame: Hate fishing? Me too. This skips the fishing minigame and catches fish for you. You will still have to click when you get a Hit, just fishing without the fuss.

💜Stardew Valley Expanded: A fanmade expansion for ConcernedApe's Stardew Valley. This mod adds 27 new NPCs, 50 locations, 260 character events, 27 fish, reimagined vanilla areas, two farm maps, a reimagined world map reflecting all changes, new music, questlines, objects, crops, festivals, and many miscellaneous additions! (last updated April 8, 2024. also would recommend to second time players due to amount of content)

In those Photoshop files, you will find premade transparent patterns ready to be recolored for each item of the set (helmet, silk, saddle pad and mask).

You'll need my Racing Set, The Sims 4 Studio and a graphic software. I recommend Photopea (free and online) if you don't have access to Photoshop or Procreate.

How to use :

Download the psd files and open them in Photoshop, Procreate or Photopea.

Open the "Layers" panel on the left. In the "PATTERNS" folder, duplicate the patterns you want for each item of the set (including their backgrounds, seams, etc).

Drag and drop your recently duplicated layers to each corresponding sub-folders in the "YOUR_SWATCHES" folder and make sure to place all the layers above the background one.

Recolor each layer with any colors you want by double-clicking on it and going to color overlay then choosing a color from the little square in color overlay.

Make sure they are all layered properly and activate the "FX" folder to get the details that will give life to the texture. (Only edit this folder if you know what you're doing.)

Export each item's textures by clicking "export as" in the "File" drop down menu on the top-left. Export each items individually while the others are hidden (You only need to activate the 'DRAG_DROP_PATTERNS' folder and the 'fx' folder, make sure everything else is hidden.)

It's not required, but you can also create a swatch thumbnail to differentiate your recolor in game using the "Thumbnails" folder and recoloring the patterns in it to match your swatch.

Once you have exported every textures you made, and with the Sims 4 Studio installed, double-click to open the packages files you want to edit from my Racing Set and click "Add Swatch".

Import your newly created textures in "Texture" → "Diffuse". (Do not edit the other ones.)

You can also import your custom thumbnail here in "Swatch Thumbnail".

In "Categories", you can edit the colors tags to match your custom swatch.

Click "Save" and enjoy your newly created silk !

Important notes : 

Don't duplicate my package files, just edit the one you have in your mod folder otherwise they will conflict. If you want to create a standalone version, you'll need to duplicate my package through The Sims 4 Studio. See this article for more details.

The silk for the male and female frame share the same textures, you'll just need to create one texture and import it in both of the package files. 

Same thing for the mask, you don't need a texture without blinkers, you can simply use the same one for the two versions.

✨New Wall Paint!

So for todays project I thought I would try and put something together quickly (spoiler it took a lot longer than it should have...), basically I just wanted to recolour some wall paints using a similar process to how I made the freckles.

How I made it

So to make these I used two tools - 

GIMP photo editor (the download button didn't work for me, so I had to go into 'direct download here' and then select 'gimp-2.10.0-setup-1.exe'

sims4studio (you need to make an account)

To start in sims4studio, I clicked ‘standalone recolour’ underneath build. On the next page I selected the wallpaper I wanted (I chose a green from the dark basics paint). 

From there you’ll get to the view where you can start to edit, add swatches and thumbnails. At the time of writing this, you should find 3 tabs:

Catalogue: Here you can set the name, description & price. These will show in game like below.

Texture: Here’s where you’ll choose the thumbnail and download the needed files & re-upload your recoloured files.

Tags: These are used in the in game search, in here for wall paints, all I had to change was the colour tags - you’ll find objects and other types of items will have way more tags to select from.

So with the basics under your belt, lets talk about how to actually recolour.

On the texture screen you’ll be faced with this:

At the top you have the swatch thumbnails, click on this and you can change the thumbnail colour.

In the texture box, you’ll want to hit the ‘export all’ button, this will download 9 files to your chosen folder, the 3 you’ll want to pay attention to are the 3 colour pictures. Each of these represents a different wall height.

Open up these 3 files in gimp, then you’ll want to go to select ‘Colors’ from the top menu, and then colorize.

On the next window click the big blue box - this will open a colour picker and you can choose your shade. Before you hit ok, I recommend grabbing the HTML colour code (this will be a 6 digit code made of numbers and letters which represents the colour). You can then do the same thing on the other two wall heights copying this code straight across.

Once you’re happy, on each image select file > export - this will save it as a png file. You can give it a new name or just overwrite the one you downloaded. Back in sims4studio, you can click though the different wall heights and hit import to upload each new colour. 

And voila! Done! You've made your own custom wall paint!

You can add as many colours as you want by hitting ‘add swatch’ at the top.

Then hit save and it will automatically save it as a .package file you can stick straight into your mods file!

My struggles

So I made a few mistakes that made this whole process take a lot harder than it should have been, here they are & how I would recommend avoiding them.

Choosing a light coloured wall paint with trim - basically when you're using the magic want tool to select an area in GIMP (so you don't colour the trim as well), you'll want a colour that contrasts so it's picked up easier - so if it's a white trim, go for a dark paint colour.

Losing the HTML colour code. Because of the way colourise works you need to basically apply the new colour once over the same background colour. To avoid losing the code I started using it as my thumbnail colour in sims4studio immediately after doing the first wall height. You can easily re-grab the colour from there, but it's not so easy to do in GIMP.

Hitting cancel in sims4studio - basically there's no warning message & I lost about half an hour of work I had to redo (thankfully quicker the second time round as I'd saved the wall paints as new every time instead of replacing). But my tip here is save often, you don't go back a page or anything so there's no harm in hitting save between swatches.

I hope this helped someone, although I’m mostly using this account to chronologize my own modding journey - and I will most likely refer back to this post a lot to do more CC in the future.

Capturing the ambience of Star Wars Battlefront (2015)

DICE's playable tribute to the original Star Wars trilogy happens to be an audiovisual marvel. The development team even ventured to the original filming locations in order to capture the sights and sounds of their respective "planets", via photogrammetry and field-recording!

Running the game

Frosty Mod Manager makes it easy to apply data changes to Frostbite 3 games. At the time of writing 1.0.6.3 is the latest version, and includes support for the EA launcher app.

Mod Manager groups mods into "Pack"s. Download the DLC in Single Player mod, and add it to a custom pack or simply use the Default one. When you press Launch, your mod(s) will perform the changes listed under the Actions tab - in this case, making it easy to visit any of the game's multiplayer maps by yourself.

Capturing footage

The DLC in Single Player mod adds additional sections to the in-game pause menu, namely Level Select:

SWBF's maps can be rendered differently depending on the game type. Fortunately the mod also offers an augmented Skirmish main menu to access (most of) these.

Once we've entered the level of our choosing, we can activate Hattiwatt1's Cinematic Tools to freely move the camera, hide our player-character, toggle the HUD, maximize LoD, and more. For additional download links, see my post about Battlefield 3.

Tweaking maps

You may wish to remove some of the game's "battle beyond" dynamic backgrounds, as they are noisy and detract from the scenery. In most cases you'll find multiple layers of "battle" - a dogfight in the upper and lower atmospheres, plus hovering capital ships.

Let's explore Sulfur Fields (volcanic02) as an example. Open Frosty Editor, look for the map's StreamedLevel battlebeyond schematic, and delete the ClientDFSimSpawnerEntityData which spawn TIEs and X-Wings.

To hide the map's capital ships, remove all SpatialPrefabReferenceObjectData representing Star Destroyers and Corvettes from its battlebeyond file. Compare this Sulfur Fields screenshot to the one above!

Extracting sounds

SWBF's audio systems are incredibly complex. For ambience, it follows the Frostbite convention of combining a static 4-channel asset with randomized dynamic ("Big World") sound effects. There are also positional sound spots for the noisy machines and natural phenomenon scattered around SWBF's maps.

I recommend using Frosty Editor, rather than scripts, to extract these assets. However Frosty isn't well-equipped to bulk-extract sounds. Plus, we have two different mass-extraction tasks we need to perform:

Dumping many variants at once (example SW01_Planets_Sullust_Shared_Ambience_BigWorld_Frog_FrogCalls_VAR_02)

Serializing the chunks of a longer stream (example SW01_Planets_Sullust_Shared_Ambience_SoundArea_SulfurBrook_03) together into a single WAV.

We can edit the Frosty source (specifically the FrostySoundEditor plugin) to modify the sound exporter to do what we want.

Add a simple loop inside SoundExportMenuItem_Click to implement goal A:

To implement goal B, we're best served hacking together a couple of new functions.

Mixing sounds
