#i will also accept 'gerson is gaster' if it comes to it

Just so we’re all on the same page here--
Toby Fox has been having Fun With Anagrams and name puns since Undertale. Asgore Dreemurr can be arranged to ‘Sage or Murderer.’ Asriel Dreemurr doesn’t just reference the Angel of Death Azrael, but can be rearranged to ‘Serial Murderer’. ‘Toriel’ is a pun on ‘tutorial’. ‘Undyne’ is a pun on ‘Undine,’ Ralsei’s whole name, etc etc. People know about this.
-In Undertale, Gaster was a genius, and Alphys was selected by Asgore to replace him. In Deltarune, Gerson was a well-loved teacher and author, and now Toriel has recommended Alphys to fill his role.
-There was an Undertale-themed Tarot deck designed by @/dogbomber. Initially, the Hermit card was represented by Gaster. However, when Toby and Fangamer agreed to let the Tarot deck be printed as official merch, Gaster was replaced by Gerson in the Hermit card.
-It has been pointed out by @rvenen0791 that ‘Goners’ is an anagram for ‘Gerson.’
-'Goner’ seems to have strong ties to both Gaster and Deltarune. Deltarune is hinted at by the Goner Clam and begins with a Goner Survey, which it’s strongly implied Gaster is narrating.
-Gaster’s most famous line is Entry No. 17. Some have theorized that Gaster was actually describing the creation of a Dark World during it. Near the end of Chapter 2, a connection between Gerson and Dark Worlds is tentatively created.
-Gerson is the only character to tell us some lesser-known lore about the Underground, including the Angel’s Prophecy, the meaning of the Delta Rune, and how Boss Monsters age.
-Not only Angel and the Deltarune significant in Deltarune, but Toriel and Asgore may not outlive their human child this time around, because Asriel’s still alive too... (Assuming boss monsters still age like in Undertale.)
-Someone tried pointing out similarities between Gaster Blasters and turtle skulls once. I thought it was a bit of a stretch at the time, but now...
-What does it all mean? I don’t know! But it’s something!

I’ve had this random kingdings college au stuck in my head for weeks now so I might as well loose it to the wind 🤲
Gaster is one of those child prodigy types. First started college at the age of 15, and is now a teacher himself at 24 (in some vein of science, experimental physics or something). Works at a highly prestigious school, his work is his life.
Asgore, on the other hand, mostly got accepted to the school because he comes from an old money type of family. Not to say he’s stupid, but he’s not very passionate about what he’s there for, which would essentially be politics, law, etc. and why it took so long for him to commit and apply (he’s 29). Really, he’d be happy to run a small flower shop and keep to himself, but family pressures and all that jazz.
I haven’t settled on how they meet, perhaps Gaster is actually already acquainted with the Dreemurr family, since they’re a well known, influential monster family, or perhaps it’s a meet-cute situation and they routinely bump into each other in odd ways. Either way, they become an odd couple of friends, neither particularly social amongst their piers for various reasons.
It’s not long before Gaster learns about Toriel, Asgore’s childhood friend…and love of his life, not that she knows, and Gaster ignores the odd feeling it gives him listening to Asgore talk about her. After graduating high school, Toriel pursued her dream of traveling and teaching all over the world, so Asgore never confessed, not wanting her to feel like he was asking her to stay with him as part of a life he wasn’t even happy in.
The closer they get, the more Gaster begins to identify that funny feeling he gets around Asgore, but does everything in his power to staunch it, convinced Asgore is still holding on to hope that he and Toriel might one day be able to be together.
Meanwhile, Gaster is one of the first real friends Asgore feels like he’s made in a long time. Despite getting along decently with most, something about Gaster puts Asgore at ease, and makes him feel like he can relax and be himself in a way few others can.
Things are fine for while, but one day, out of nowhere, a family friend to Gaster’s estranged family gets into touch with him. The flame elemental explains there was an accident that left two of his relative’s kids without parents, and no one else can or will take them in. Gaster’s the last person on the list, so if he won’t adopt them either, they’ll be separated and placed into the foster care system.
After talking about it at length with Asgore, Gaster goes on temporary work leave and decides to adopt the two children, brothers, ages 5 and 9.
After getting legal stuff sorted, they arrive by train with their chaperone, the family friend, Grillby. They talk about everything before Grillby has to board his train back, leaving Gaster alone for the first time with his…kids. His kids.
Oh geez.
Aaaand from that point on, Gaster of course takes them home, probably already got a room set up for them (with Asgore’s help), and he tries to. Figure out how to be a parent. Asgore is a natural, of course, and is incredibly happy to lend a hand whenever Gaster needs it, and of course the kids are Sans and Papyrus, and the story would mostly just be about fluff and becoming and family, and the kids mostly unintentionally being the catalyst for Asgore and Gaster to get their shit together and confess. And it’d be cute =o)
I’d also like to give Toriel and Grillby relevant roles, and Gerson and Rudy, too, but the latter two would probably come into the story gradually, after the boys are adopted, through…some means idk. Idk!!! Ahdjjfjak

Personal Concept Dump: Undertale
This is solely for my benefit. I’m dumping a bunch of ideas/concepts/footnotes I have for a dumpfic I’m probably going to slap onto AO3 just to prove it existed in my brain at some point.
I like to headcanon for Undertale that all souls spin. They spin, they bob, sometimes they’ll buzz back and forth. It’s an emotional tie that I’m linking to that tight feeling you get in your chest when you feel intense emotion.
Tumblr media
However I also like the idea that some people have a condition of their soul. That when they feel intense emotions their soul doesn’t just react, it overreacts and spins wayyyy faster than it probably should. But the only thing it does is make them immune to magic until they chill out, kind of like a magnet. This is bad in scenarios when the person is wounded, but good in terms of like magic based violence. Not everyone has it either. It’s like a defect or something of the like. Kind of messing with the idea that some humans have been so far removed from magic for so many generations that their soul just doesn’t react to it properly anymore.
Okay, point numero two. Studio apartments. I’ll stick an example picture here.
Tumblr media
Okay, these are common in my storylines. It’s always either this or a whole ass house. Fuck other styles I guess.
I don’t have a picture for the next one. The ectoplasm/magic appendages thing that people made for the skeletons so that the could fuck and have tongues. That’s a thing for me. I accept that. Mostly the tongue one because the thought of Sans or Papyrus eating anything without a tongue bothers me. I don’t like the idea that it’s just a food void OR the idea it just drops into their lower jaws and dissipates over time.
The only other one I accept is Sans specific since Papyrus can open his mouth canonically. I also accept the idea that if he just puts something up to his teeth and it pops out of existence/phases through his teeth and is magically absorbed. I like the options that presents.
Also their eyes. I’ll probably put a diagram in later or something to explain it better. I can explain my thought process for Sans at least. So you can reach through his socket. It doesn’t hurt him but it’s weird. There’s a hand in his head, that’s weird. You can feel around the entirety of his skull. He’ll keep stuff in there in a pinch but he can hear it sliding around inside his head so he doesn’t tend to. You can’t grab the lights however. Those exist in totally different way.
I can go either way about changing the shape of the eye lights. The lights being changed by emotions and being changed at will both suit me. It’s whatever is plot convenient at the time usually. We’ll go with both.
But I also like open mouths, so sue me.
I also subscribe to nurse Papyrus but not all the time. Wartime elemental soldier Grillby on the other hand I always subscribe to. That is his backstory always. He was summoned with a batch* of other elementals by mages and instructed to fight.
Basically they are the constructed cold transformers of the Undertale universe.
(*) I headcanon sometimes that you had to summon four elementals -one for each- all at once. Starting out there were an equal amount of each elemental type. Fire just survived the best on the battlefield.
Long story short, Grillby can use a sword. He was a solider, now he’s a veteran with a bar that does NOT talk about the war. He’d rather forget. It’s not important to him anymore. He’s moved on. But if Gerson asked him to tell a story to some kids he would.
Papyrus does a lot of volunteer work. You literally can’t change my mind on that one.
Sans would really get in to mobile games but also be super picky about them.
All skeletons can get dark circles under their eye sockets.
I don’t have a set preference for Gaster’s relation to the brothers. I literally just go with whatever is plot convenient. However I do believe the most likely canon is that they were made. The way the bunny girl talks about them makes me suspicious. Papyrus doesn’t even know what the sun is.
The inside of Grillby’s mouth looks like shiny lava. Shiny lava saliva. Yes that is coming from an old borderline smut work of mine. It’s probably (100%) been done by other people as well. In which case, glad we think alike bro. 👉👉
Papyrus loves cooking shows. And while he respects and accepts Gordan Ramsay’s skill, he does not like the yelling. The yelling personality is too much for him. He like the one where Gordon travels the world though.
There’s more but this is long. So that’s it for now.

[3/30/17 OLD NOTE]
the first 15
Cute Skeleton AU: Everyone thinks Sans is really cute when he gets the kids menu, but can he handle all the fame? No, he thinks he should hide.
Caretale: A 2 year old AU based on the events BEFORE Undertale. It’s a headcanon of mine if Sans and Papyrus were raised by Toriel given by W.D Gaster, and Gerson with Asgore raises Alphys and Undyne.
Roletale: Literally, everyone knows the game. They play around by giving their roles to each other. (Ex: Woshua gets to be Toriel)
Skelefish: Sans explains to Undyne why he suffers hard on his job, and takes her to a new timeline of trouble.
Teabag of Bones AU: “We Goat your Back, Sans!” is the same as Skelefish, but it’s Sans and Asgore.
Snail N’ Bones AU: Same with Skelefish and Teabag of Bones, but it’s Sans and Toriel, including to see how they met.
Aware of Action AU: Recently discussed to a friend on Instagram, this AU is where everyone is aware of the game. Genocide is not a really good idea. Undyne is one of the characters to be aware too, so don’t even try.
Opposite Tale AU: This has been done many, many times to others on Amino, and that’s making everyone out of character. Renaming it now to “Soul’d Out”.
Placeshift AU: This AU changes the setting of the locations of the Underground. You have all the items, and just need to use them without fighting anyone.
DreemurrFamily: The most active AU everyday going, as they explore to many parts of the Surface, upload their videos, being popular and theorized, problems, and morals during routine.
Flara: Chara and Flowey combined. Chara possessed the empty buttercup before following Frisk to the Surface. Their purpose used to taunt anyone that comes in their way, but now it’s giving the good and bad memories of what happened during the limited days of the Surface.
Sockboss: Sans-centered 3 year old AU, Sans turned into an arrogant person, making his brother think he wants to be perfect as much as him. But Sans thinks he can’t be leader, since he “isn’t cut out for it”. Flowey helped him boost his positivity a bit too far, and regrets it, leaving him terrified to see his rival become the villain. Undyne is also under Alphys’ command, to take Papyrus with them and stay away from Sans as far as possible.
Muffster Sit AU: It just so happened to get in my head, that Muffet has anyone’s role and is one of the subjects to capture the human and cross the barrier for her own bakery to be famously opened and recognized.
Backshift: A friend and I on Quotev (quiz and story maker website) made an AU where Asriel is alive and taking place underground. Frisk and Chara fall down after both children were able to revive by sharing SOULs, malfunctioning the world to have alternate changes. Papyrus and Undyne know the timelines, Sans gets more hot-tempered than his brother because of having the goal to make the human “dead where they stand” so he became a royal guard, Alphys becomes scientist and sentry, and Asgore is still king but hosts meetings.
Persablend: A mix of Underswap and Undertale, already critically attacked to be deleted by a hopeless person that thinks my idea has already been done. I still like the designs I did for them and its story how it all happened. Team Switched may have done it, but i’m still making mine stand.
A Deal for Voice AU: The two fourth-wall breakers meet Gaster. Gaster tells them the deal if “Sans can speak in just his voice box and Flowey turns into himself with a SOUL”. The deal was accepted, and now Frisk and everyone except Papyrus and Alphys gets a hard time understanding what Sans says.

Undertale AU backstories
Does anyone else think about how/why things are different in Undertale AUs that aren’t just a different setting or just different circumstances? Because I can’t help but wonder about the possible reasons for the differences if that timeline isn’t just LIKE that.
Like what about Underswap? Maybe Sans wanted to keep his brother happy so badly he leant into his immature side to cheer Papyrus up so intensely his interest in science took a backseat. Que a grateful, protective Papyrus who did everything he could to play to his strengths out of determination to look after and protect the big brother who did so much to make sure he was happy. Or maybe there was an accident, and Sans wasn’t the same after. Whether Gaster is still a scientist or not would probably be a pretty big factor in said differences. Regarding smaller things ‘classic’ Papyrus’ actual favorite food is the variant of oatmeal with dinosaur eggs right? So it’s far from far fetched that a more laid back Papyrus would be unrepentant about indulging his sweet tooth. Depending on what sort of sway you go for there are a various different ways that could play out, like Gaster and Gerson switching places. Maybe Undyne started out just trying to recreate the robots & weapons from anime & Alphys either decided to do her best to be like the warrior women in anime she crushed on or wanted to protect Undyne. Maybe an accident or a lack of whatever took Unyne’s eye led to Undyne or both her & Alphys growing up differently. Or maybe one or both of them wound up with different mentors. Maybe Asgore regretted his rash decision upon his childrens’ deaths before Toriel left in the normal timeline while Toriel was consumed by her anger & latched onto his plan instead of being disgusted by it. Maybe she brought up her “kill one and cross the barrier to get the rest of the souls” plan, only it took long enough for Asgore’s regret to set in or she kept holding out for an adult human. Or maybe whatever happened to Asriel in this timeline changed them long before Frisk came along. Muffet’s easy, she’s canonically deeply concerned over and protective of her kin. Maybe she’s in Snowdin to be closer to the kin trapped in the ruins and unable to simply go through cracks in the door due to the freezing temperatures? I don’t think there would be too much difference, but giving into that softer side could easily change her just enough to be more pleasant and someone I can easily imagine Papyrus enjoying being around. Grillby... well, maybe in ‘classic’ Undertale he was originally from Hotland. The lack of whatever had him living in Snowdin meant he never left. Personality wise... either said influence involved something bad happening and he’s more cheerful without that tragedy or horror to influence his life, or he put on a cheerful front instead
Then there’s Underfell. Maybe most of the time in non Fell timelines Asgore didn’t usually end up killing the humans himself, which left him in his normal senses to grieve the little humans alongside his own lost children & his damaged relationship with his wife. Or maybe in Underfell they weren’t usually children and things played out differently. Either way the result of the difference is a timeline where instead of guilt, grief and loneliness eating away at him Asgore is left vulnerable to the mental corruption that comes with LV, and since he’s the ruler of the Monster Kingdom the result is an angry, damaged Underground. Toriel? My best guess would be that she wound up with severe trauma from staying long enough to see the first death. Or a mix of trauma, LV, and guilt. Let’s start simply for the others. Undyne, fierce from the start, falls to this mindset easily. Rashly rushing into a fight and taking a ‘shoot first ask questions later’ mindset is already easy for her, add LV to the mix and you have a much harsher, angrier Undyne. To the point that maybe she either forgets the good intentions of her youth or ends up disgusted at what she’s become and guilt ridden. (I’ve seen a fic where Fell!Undyne is a traitor completely against the way the Fellverse Royal Guard operates, and ever since I’ve been intrigued by the idea of Fell!Undyne going in the opposite direction of the angrier, harsher persona most Fell iterations go for. Alphys is a gentle, anxious soul who just wants to help normally. Maybe LV messes her up too. Maybe rather than LV due to either desperation or orders she can’t ignore she takes her experiments farther & farther until she can’t handle it, until the only things left that could be the personal consequences were something cracking and warping in her or falling down. Muffet was already pretty ruthless and fierce, and protecting her kin would probably have been harder in this harsher environment. Or maybe something horrific happened to some of her kin? Grillby, a lot of people just write as angrier & harsher or indifferent, with his flames as purple. But what if it’s the opposite? With the background and personality many like giving Grillby it’s so easy to see him disliking the way the Underground slowly warps. Oh, maybe at first he’s like most Fellverse portrays him. But as he gets more discouraged by the way things are and more emotionally exhausted, he’s metaphorically and possibly magically drained until his flames run a much cooler red rather than any of the colors more natural for a fire monster. Sans & Papyrus, I’m going off the usual assumption that Gaster is their father. I don’t see Gaster changing too much no matter the timeline. Angrier and harsher, perhaps. But certainly not enough to be someone to treat his loved ones poorly. So maybe the problem there is that he gets absorbed in his experiments to the point he accidentally neglects his sons, or maybe depending on what the original home environment was he’s so busy he doesn’t notice their other parent either being too harsh or being outright abusive until it’s too late to salvage his boys’ mental and emotional state properly. Or maybe he’s even closer to how he normally is than you’d figure & Sans & Papyrus are bullied due to a home environment that should otherwise have left them to mostly grow as they did in ‘classic’ Undertale. The rest is at least alluded to in canon, as far as the Skeleton Brothers go: a harsher environment & harder personalities or higher stress due to said harsher environment result in turbulent squabbles that scar Papyrus & loses Sans a tooth. Being the dutiful big brother when Papyrus is more violent, competent & bossy he quietly accepts doing Papyrus’ bidding while still protecting him from the shadows. Maybe it’s that simple- or maybe Sans regrets hurting Papyrus so badly he sees being subservient in public as a way to make up for things. It could even simply their way of protecting each other in a world that would almost gladly see them dead. I see that in some of the Fellverse stuff that doesn’t fall into the ‘abusive Fell!Papyrus trope. (I’m a total sucker for the ‘Fell Papyrus isn’t abusive & they actually care just as much as the other iterations’ trope. I will absolutely do as much reaching as needed to keep my adorably loving and supportive familial relationship.)
Most of the other AUs are purely superficial differences or self explanatory, so that just leaves Echotale since I don’t know enough about the AU that has both a G!Sans and a G!Papyrus. There’s not much to speculate on for Echotale, since most stuff is going to be exactly the same or is literally just the basis of the AU. For one thing, maybe Frisk is older or younger when they go to Mount Ebbot? It’s also entirely possibly that this is ‘classic’ Undertale Frisk growing up in a different environment, which might involve descendents of mages or either military personnel or politicians high enough in status to be able to act on their paranoia the legends incite. (Of course the latter two would probably involve evidence or rumors indicating the legends are more than just legends.) Otherwise, the only other real difference i can see is Gaster being around. Maybe he never built the machine found in Sans’ basement/fell in the Core? (People say the former instead once in a while right?) Or maybe he simply didn’t fall in or was saved. Whether Sans keeps up with science in this timeline or still mostly leaves it behind is something I think best left up to personal interpretation.

Buckle up here are my thoughts on Deltarune
I’ve been seeing a lot of ppl here and videos on YouTube talking abt theories and stuff so I thought I’d make my own megapost to surmise my thoughts and my own theory on wtf is going on in this game Part of this was @brigadeinvader and me talking over discord and discussing the game, I don’t think either of us would’ve come up with this on our own
Timeline Placement & Stuff
Tumblr media
As Toby stated, Deltarune is neither a sequel nor a prequel because it’s not the same world as Undertale, and this is important. You can call it an AU if you want, it’s not far from what I believe it is. However, somethig doesn’t have to be a prequel or sequel to happen before or after something else. Lemme explain.
I personaly stand for the idea that Deltarune is an alternative wolrd to Undertale, hence why the same characters are there, only different. It being an alternative world means it’s still somehow connected to Undertale. If you know anything about the multiple worlds hypothesis, then you should know Undertale and Deltarune’s timelines would run parallel to each other without interfering (they might’ve been one and the same at some point, but not anymore. And timelines cannot merge back). This still means the events of one can take place after or before the other, just in different worlds.
Tumblr media
Not necessarily in that order, but like so. We have two dates to go by, and those are the begining narration of Undertale and Ralsei’s cut manual for Deltarune. Undertale’s is 201X, while Deltarune’s is 202X. This would normally mean Deltarune goes around a decade after. However, the date at the beginning of Undertale is not the date the events of the game take place on, but the date the Fallen Human (I’ll refer to them as Chara) ends up in the underground. The game asks us to name the human from the beginning narration, which isn’t Frisk, so we don’t know exactly how much time passed between Chara’s arrival and Frisk’s. It has to be a lot of time, though, seeing as six other humans fell down in that time and most of the monsters underground don’t remember/flat out haven’t seen the surface or the humans by the time Frisk arrives. And if we take Asriel’s transformation at face value, then enough time has passed for a Dreemurr to age from a kid to a... young man, I guess. Which is certainly more than a decade.
Arsiel being in university in Deltarune doesn’t put it after Undertale, because I’m pretty sure Asriel would also be around that age, if not older, by the time Frisk comes around if he hadn’t died.
If you don’t want to take Toby’s declaration too seriously, since he doesn’t outright say anything but Deltarune being a different world from Undertale with different characters that lived different lives; then Chapter 1 still has some evidence that points towards this. None of the characters you meet that were also in Undertale are exactly the same. Not even their sprites. Everyone has at least something different in their designs when compared to the ones seein at the ending credits of the Pacifist run in Undertale. Asgore doesn’t have a crown, Undyne doesn’t wear an eyepatch, Alphys doesn’t have her labcoat and was probably never a scientist, Mettaton never became a star, Toriel has a darker shirt underneath her purple sweater (check it, I’m serious), Bratty and Catty hate each other, and so on. Sadly we don’t get to see Papyrus, The only one who’s exactly the same is Sans.
Sans
There’s a post by @napstamuse (idk about putting links bc of tumblr’s recent algorithm, sorry) comparing all the main sprites of the characters in both Undertale and Deltarune, and Sans’ jacket is has the same color, even down to the hex value of the blue. Not only that, but his personality remains untouched. He still has some sort of attraction (I don’t mean romantic necessarily) to Toriel, still fond of puns, etc. He’s the only one of those we see that’s exactly the same in Deltarune as in Undertale.
He’s more than probably even the exact same Sans from Undertale. As in, he somehow moved from one timeline to the other, unlike the rest who aren’t the same characters per se. We all know by now Sans wasn’t from Undertale, not really. His Genocide fight convo states “I gave up trying to go back a long time ago.” and “getting to the surface doesn't really appeal anymore, either”. This means 1) he’s not from there, from Undertale’s world/timeline and 2) whatever place he’s from isn’t the surface. That’s important. Because a lot of details point towards Sans being originally from Deltarune’s world, then for some reason moving to Undertale’s sometime before Frisk arrives. But when we find him in Deltarune, what does he say?
Tumblr media
And when you ask about “Friends”.
Tumblr media
Meaning he also came from somewhere else. Considering Deltarune’s town is in, apparently, the surface; then it makes sense why Sans didn’t originate from there, since he didn’t come from the surface. And he knows the surface, as evidenced by him telling Papyrus what the Sun is (though that could also be bc of Alphys’ anime).
But if he doesn’t come from Deltarune’s town, and he also deosn’t come from Undertale’s world; then where does he come from?
I propose Sans is a Darkner. I don’t know if someone has already made this point in a video or post, but hear me out.
Unless Sans is from a different world altogether, then the only place in Deltarune that isn’t the surface (that we know of) is the Dark World. Not only that, but we know thanks to this infamous scene:
Tumblr media
... that Darkners bleed.  Monsters do not bleed. Susie right there more than probably doesn’t bleed either, and yet Lancer assumes everyone in the Fun Gang does. That can only be because his species, the Darkners, all bleed. You know who else bleeds?
Tumblr media
Sans does. And yes, I’m aware there have been ppl saying the red thing coming from him is actually ketchup from a bottle inside his jacket (which, knowing sans, wouldn’t surprise me tbh), but that wouldn’t explain why it comes out of his mouth as well. Hence it must be blood. Monsters from the underground all turn to dust upon defeat, yet Sans is the only one in the game who doesn’t. It doesn’t help the fact that we never see him die on screen and the sound effect that plays when the battle ends isn’t the one of a moster being defeated, but of one being spared. We also never really see Darkners bleed, that’s true, since they all flee from battle and you can’t kill anyone in Chapter 1; but Lancer’s bucket scene tells us that yes, blood is a thing in the Dark World that does come out of bodies when they are beaten.
There’s also another thing that might be minor, but all Darkners get tired after enough time in a battle. It’s the way you defeat the Chaos King and it’s the easiest way to spare enemies in Chapter 1. They all fall asleep. After enough time in a battle, Sans also falls asleep. It’s also the only way to defeat him in Genocide.
So Sans might be a Darkner. Why he left the Dark World (what is the Dark World) and why he then left the world of Deltarune to arrive at Undertale... we don’t know. It could have something to do with Undertale’s Gaster (or maybe Deltarune’s), but again, we don’t know. We’ll have to wait for the rest of Deltarune to come out to have more material to go on, I suppose.
Also the stuff about the “don’t forget” picture with the three smiling people on it. The song at the end credits states “don’t forget, I’m with you in the dark”, and the Fun Gang is comprised of three people. But we have no definitive evidence on that either.
More on the Timeline Placement
I personally believe Deltarune takes place before Undertale, though I suppose a better term would be “earlier” than Undertale in the split worlds. By no means whatever happens in Deltarune affects Undertale, we know that thanks to Toby’s tweet. But Sans being there means something happened that made him leave and enter Undertale, so in some ways it is before that game.
I also know there are some things that make this difficult. I still believe Deltarune comes before, but untill we see Asriel or have any definitive dates we cannot be sure as to which one is earlier in the timeline. Gerson being dead complicates things even more, unless you want to tell me monsters age slower in the underground.
Jevil & Seam
Seam’s line if you speak to him after defeating Jevil, the “darker, yet darker one”, is too specific not to be deliberate. We know Jevil spoke to someone that broke him, and we also know said someone was not the Knight. Not only that, but Jevil uses sprites way too similar to the Everyman to also be a coincidense, when using his carousel attack. We also see the Everyman in the wall of the alley Alphys is at the end of Chapter 1. So something is going on there.
Gaster
I think by now we’ve all somewhat accepted the idea that Gaster is more present in Deltarune than he is in Undertale. The same sound that plays during Entry 17 can be heard if you try to use your phone in the Dark World, and it’s also the noise that sounds near the red doors in the woods of town, only slowed down by a crap ton. The tweets before Deltarune was launched are also more than probably written by Gaster, considering the name of the account was changed to black bars and every tweet was in his text style.  During the survey part of Chapter 1 it’s also very probable the one conducting the survey is him, judging by the text style and all the weird choices (like blood types C and D, or the PAIN flavor). That is, of course, until someone else interrupts them. The text stopps being all in uppercase and the speech pattern changes, which is even more evident in the Japanese version as it starts using the correct form of speech (kanji + hiragana) instead of the weird one from before (katakana + hiragana). Coincidentally enough, the only character we know of that speaks in a textbook example of correct speech (thanks to the Japanese version of Undertale), is Chara.
And before anyone starts saying Gaster isn’t there; he is.  We just don’t know where. He has to be there, with no Core to build and no accident to happen that means the Gaster of Deltarune is 1) untouched, probably the same he was before everything went down in Undertale and 2) not a scientist, by that matter. Alphys is a teacher, so Gaster has to be around somewhere (more than probably behind the red doors south of the church, but who knows). We can say, though, that there might be more than one Gaster there. Since Undertale’s was “shattered across time and space” because of the accident, and Deltarune’s never had said accident, then both could be around during Chapter 1.
Also the game continues to crash/restart if you try to name either creator or vessel after him.
Dark World
It exists, lets get that out of the way. I highly doubt it was a dream or an hallucination or something, and there’s some evidence pointing to that.
It is very probable, though, that it doesn just... exist. How do I even began to explain this.
It might have been created by some otherworldly power influenced by what was present in the abandoned classroom when Kris and Susie return to town. There was a chess board, chess pieces, a deck of cards, a stuffed toy that looked like Seam, etc.  But it did certainly happen. They entered the supply closet. If everything had been a dream or a game, then 1) Susie wouldn’t be surprised and confused (in the case of a game) and 2) they would still be in the supply closet by the time they return. But they were not.
Also, the pencil Kris carries changes if you defeat Jevil before coming back. Not only that, but there’s an item that carries over into your inventory from the Dark World. The egg.
If you are given the egg behind that tree by... whoever that was, it will still be in your inventory when you return to town. You can leave it in Asgore’s fridge and it will multiply, much like the Dog Residue of Undertale. What is up with the egg, we don’t know. Who even gave Kris the egg is also unknown, but for every character we don’t know we could simply answer “Gaster” so we don’t have any clues either.
Kris
Some random thoughts before I close this off.
So Kris. Great adittion to our sweater wearing protagonists, now we can call them the kfc gang.
Seriously, though, Kris. I don’t even know where to begin here.
Tumblr media
You can still move their soul when they trap you in the cage.  I think this points to the idea that we control Kris by their soul. It’s what appears on the map when we avoid attacks and what, just like in Undertale, we take control of during battles.
Tumblr media
It’s also Kris’ file the one we overwrite at the beginning of the Dark World. It’s pretty obvious that we are taking control over them by taking control over their soul. It might just be a bad case of silent protagonist, but Kris never reacts to anything, even when those around them are shocked. He never tries to do anything on their own, except for that one time they chose to protect either Susie or Ralsei (I don’t remember). Also the “your choices don’t matter” theme going on in Chapter 1.
Us being in control instead of them is even more evident when you try to drop the Ball of Junk once you return to town. Kris doesn’t want to, and is upset when we force them to, but they still throw it away; because they have no control over their body. They’re even relieved if you decide not to after the first question.
We can also suppose this control we haver over them isn’t a first time thing, though maybe not necessarily our control. The only objects they posses are the Ball of Junk and the cage over the red... wagon? (I forget what that is called). The rest of their side of the room is empty, as if they were afraid of having anything the ones controlling could simply toss away.
That explains perfectly why they rip their soul out at the ending of Chapter 1, though not the knife and the smile. Though that’s the most speculation in this rant.
Anyway, congrats if you read through all that lol Feel free to add your theories/thoughts and help me correct stuff if there’s anythign contradictory in either games that could debunk anything here.
