HAPPY SUNDAY LOVELIES! 🖤
Well after the craziness of last week, I've been back to work, and it still feels bloody crazy! I've managed to squeeze in some reading this week, but it never feels like enough. I want more time, damnit! 🥵
Anyhoo, let's crack that whip Jack, and get into this week's whip round. Yeehaw! 🤠
Tumblr media
Catch up on last week here, sugar
☆ Things I've posted this week
Five Days Chapter 6 - We're halfway through this angsty, romance Joel story now, and I'm so glad those who are reading this are enjoying it. Warms the cockles of my little heart it does, to read all your comments. Thank you so much! 🖤
Unworthy - A Javier Pena GIFLET
Domestic Spice - A Marcus Moreno GIFLET
Trick Or Treat? - A Dark!Frankie Morales, Dark!Joel Miller & Dark!Dave York one shot for Halloween. This is my first time writing anything remotely dark, (although I felt it was pretty tame in comparison with some other dark fics I've read and enjoyed) and I'm completely floored by the positive responses to this story. Thank you to everyone who read it on Halloween, and who has enjoyed it since. 🎃
This week's Self-Care with Dieter & Jett looked at bullying and how you can deal with bullies, and avoid inadvertently becoming one yourself.
And this week's Writer Wow shone the spotlight on the wonderfully talented - and equally wonderful person - that is @boliv-jenta Go give them some love.⭐️
☆ Things I'm currently working on
Writing some more Christmas fics, have a bunch of GIFLETS lined up as always, and working on some one shots featuring Frankie Morales, Marcus Pike and Dave York.
I'm also getting soooo many ideas that my Google docs is a chaotic mess that I really need to put some order into. 🥴
☆ Things I've read this week
Head Shots - Chapter 4 - @secretelephanttattoo Everything about this series is so sweet and romantic, and has the perfect Marcus Pike in my opinion. I love how El perfectly places you, as the reader, in the scene so that you can literally see, hear and feel everything, and she manages to do it wonderfully. You must read this if you're an Agent Pike fan. Or any Pedro Boy fan, just read it. Thank me later. 🫠
Steep Is The Mountain - @sin-djarin Becca's Tim Rockford is just exquisite. Sexy, gruff, gun holsters... what more do you want from this handsome detective? I thoroughly enjoyed reading this and will deffo be re-visiting this when I have more hankerings for Rockford. The descriptives in this were utterly divine, and not just the smut. (Although that was scorching!) 🔥
The Haunting Of Dieter Bravo - @idolatrybarbie I have so many Halloween fics to catch up on, and reading this one was an absolute delight. I love how original and captivating this was, yet contained all the creep and dread that you want. And Dieter being Dieter, even though he's clearly spooked. This was a great read and I deffo recommend adding to your read list. Utterly spook-tacular! 👻
The Clink - @ramblers-lets-get-ramblin Let me tell you, if they had PrisonGuard!Javi P in prison, I think I would deliberately commit crimes to be locked up with him... This was hot AF. Damn hot, and in true Angela style, she captures the essence of that hotness and locks you up tight in it. Oof! 🥵
Juniper - @softlyspector This was an incredibly vivid read of Joel helping you get to sleep, in the only way Mr Miller can. And it was just delicious. I'm still thinking about this one, it's seared in my brain. 🫠
Hey There, City Boy - @sweetenerobert I had a fun cameo in Robert's Halloween Ghostface!Joel fic, and I'm still cackling about it now! Thank you, friend. The story was brilliantly hot and had that familial dread we've all come to know and love from the Scream franchise. And the smut was hella smutting for sure. Spooky Joel shenanigans aplenty! 🖤
Anytime - @undercoverpena Oh, I just fell in love with Javi P even more after reading this. Jo's romantic, friends-to-lovers story here is just beautiful! I urge you to read it because I am still drowning in my feels about it. 🥰
A shout out to lovely @beabliss who has been putting together some hot "things he'd say to you" drabbles. Some of my favourite's have been Marcus Pike & Javier Pena - super hot! Although all the one's she's released so far have been amazing to read, and inspiring too. 🥵
Also want to throw a nod and some love to @wildemaven who has been creating some of the most stunning mood boards I've seen. Again, so inspiring and creative, and some of my favourites so far have been Dieter Hosting SNL, Jackson Librarian Reunites With An Old Lover & Halloween with Dave & The Girls. But honestly, I could favour them all, they're incredible. 🖤
All these amazing fics will be added to my Pedro Character Fic Rec List when I update it next too. I've also created a Kinktober Specific Rec List now from this year, and current years gone by. So many amazing writers have contributed to this yearly theme, and the stories are incredible. Please go check them out. 🫶
☆ What have I been watching/listening to this week?
Blink 182 dropped a new album this week! And I've had it on repeat - A LOT! Growing up they were one of my favourite bands, and I've seen them live too, which was just incredible.
This new album is reminiscent in some ways of their old sound, with punchy anthems, but has some of those grown-up style ballads, similar to their album Neighbourhoods, dotted in there too, and I love it. It's been giving me embryo punk-rock Jett vibes from my college youth. And I'm still in love with Mark Hoppus to this day... 🥰
Some of my favorites from the album are Fell In Love, Terrified, One More Time & Edging.
☆ What have I been up to this week?
I went back to work this week, which was a shock to the system after a week of lay ins and writing a lot. 🥴 Feels like I've hardly done any writing at all this week.
I went out with my mom for lunch and a spot of shopping on Saturday, which was lovely, and I hung with my friends this week too for a belated birthday movie night - I was graced with a Pedro Pascal air freshener for my car... if I crash into a ditch, you'll know why! 😉
C'mon Jack, let's line dance outta here, cowboy!
That wraps it up for this week's whip round. I hope you've all had a good week and enjoy the remainder of the weekend.
Once again, thanks to everyone who sent Asks and left DM's. You guys rock! 🤘🏻
Stay kind, stay creamy. 🖤

Luke and Annabeth's relationship closely mirrors that of an elder-sibling, younger-sibling relationship in an abusive household. Idk but I've been thinking about this a lot, so I need to put it out there to get it off my mind.
Their relationship is one siblings share in an abusive household. Where the elder one tries their absolute hardest to make sure that their sibling doesn't have to see or bear the burden of their family. That their sibling doesn't have to shoulder the burden that their older brother or sister has been carrying from the get-go.
The elder one tries their absolute freaking hardest, gets up in the morning even though for them, mornings seem the bleakest and nights the most treacherous. But they get through the day to make sure their sibling is safe. They shoulder the taunts, and insults, and tirades of their parents, take care of their breakdowns, and steps in as their therapist, even though on the inside, they are just done.
They are done with this nonsense, of having to be the bigger one in every shitty argument, of getting up each day and trying to understand what kind of day its gonna be, and then accepting their defeat because in this situation, triumph is a long time coming. They are done with their parents treating them as a punching bag. They are done stepping in every time their younger sibling fucks up and they have to step in to bear the brunt of their parent's wrath. They are done.
And so they leave. They leave their house when they come of age, and they go far far away, even though it kills them to leave their younger sibling behind, even though they know its wrong to flee because if they don't, they wouldn't be able to stop themselves from jumping off of a roof the next time they're on one.
They leave.
Leaving their little siblings behind.
And the younger ones just can't fathom what's up with them. I mean, of course the know, they've seen their older brothers and sisters struggling. But they just can't get over the betrayal, and the hurt, and the fact that they're the ones left behind. They're the ones who'd have to shoulder the burden now. There would be no one for them to turn to, or cry to, or share a dark joke with at the expense of their shitty parents and there would be no one left who'd be there to love them.
And I think that captures Luke and Annabeth's relationship so perfectly.
That is their essence.

5 Songs Tag - QL Shows Edition
I was tagged by @recentadultburnout and am excited to play along; thanks for tagging me! 🥰
Before going further, I should clarify that @colourme-feral also tagged me on a different musical tag game, and I was just about to respond to that when this one came in. So am combining my responses for that one with this one as well; hope y'all don't mind! 😚💖
Credit to @troubled-mind for starting this off with their post linked here. 😍
Here are the rules:
When you get this, list 5 songs from the Asian QL shows that you actually listen to. 🎶They do not have to be custom-made for the series. 🎶Non-western tracks only. Let's support Asian music and languages! 🎶Feel free to tag anyone who may be interested in participating. 🎶Add #5qls tag to your post for others to find the new favourites!
But I'm going to bend the rules a bit because I can't stick with just five. Here are my choices (extra details for the top five, and the more unusual ones listed after):
1. 遠い国/Tooi kuni sung by Ueno Daiki (上野大樹) – the closing theme to Bokura no Shokutaku (Our Dining Table)
youtube
This gently lilting song perfectly captures the essence of the hesitant, winsome waltz between Yutaka and Minoru as they orbit ever-closer to each other around radiant little Tane-kun in this heartwarming gem of a series. I can't listen to it without the tears welling up, sentimental fool that I am. The laidback time-signature (a somewhat unusual choice) and hauntingly plaintive key changes really set this one apart. If you'd like a glimpse into the meaning of the lyrics, @isaksbestpillow has a post linked here that translates them into English – the lines are poetically indirect and yet still find some way to pluck at your heartstrings in new and unexpected ways, just like the show itself.
Although the tempo is different, I find this song reminds me so much of the theme to the 70s family series The Waltons, with its old-timey 3-4 (or is it 6-8?) vibes of nostalgia and home truths being shared over steaming bowls of homecooked goodness (also calling to mind Yutaka and Minoru's meaningful exchanges during their many simple but oh-so-delicious meals together).
2. เพลงที่เพิ่งเขียนจบ (Our Song) sung by Nanon Korapat – PatPran's theme in Bad Buddy Series
youtube
Nanon isn't one I would call a gifted singer, but his schoolboy tenor and unembellished vocal delivery suit the simple message of this piece really well. It's an unassuming little love song that sweetly encapsulates Bad Buddy's Episode 11 storyline and the theme of living the truth of your love (and by extension that of your identity too) without any need for great flourishes or grandiosity to glamorize the picture; you and your truth are enough, no matter what you may think or what others may tell you. (More write-up linked here.) 💖
3. พรุ่งนี้ (Tomorrow) sung by Ford Arun – the closing theme for Moonlight Chicken
youtube
A quiet, hope-filled ballad that softly reminds us (as Moonlight Chicken did) how life will always be fraught with struggle, disappointment, sadness, bereavement and mistakes – and despite it all, the dawning of each new day is also an opportunity to cast off the burdens placed on us yesterday and reshape the present and the future in any way that we wish. We are more than just the sum of our past missteps, and we can find our way to a life of fulfilment when we move forward beyond the shadows of our immediate despair. Ford's rendition, set against an end-of-year Christmas backdrop, tenderly nudges us with the message that whatever it is (within reason) that we seek – happiness, purpose, love – the promise of it is wrapped up in the days to come, and is always ours to take and make real.
4. รักติดไซเรน (Love Siren) sung by Ice Paris and Pearwah Nichaphat – from My Ambulance
youtube
My Ambulance isn't strictly a QL but it has a BL side couple played by Billkin and PP Krit, so I'm counting this one in (also because it's a relentlessly feel-good and catchy confection, everything you want in a breezy pop song). Everyone's really pretty, and you can spot some familiar faces dancing back-up. I've watched this so many times I immediately recognized the filming location when it popped up in Our Skyy 2 x A Tale of Thousand Stars and Be My Favorite. (Don't understand the unnecessary toilet break at timestamp 3.27 though. 🤷‍♂️)
Almost forgot to add the multilingual version – if you've not seen this before, get ready to have your mind boggled at the different languages they sing in, and maybe watch out for your own to make an appearance: 👀😍
youtube
5. ไหล่เธอ (You’ve Got Ma Back) sung by Fourth Nattawat, Ford Arun, Satang Kittiphop and Winny Thanawin – from My School President
youtube
A cheery teen anthem to togetherness and the support of friendships, very much like My School President itself. You can't help smiling and singing along because you know it's all about positivity and living worry-free when those around you care and protect you too.
And for the also-rans – these are not in any way inferior (some are even arguably superior musically), but they're not up above simply because they don't have as heavy a rotation on my playlist (and I'm listing them here to spread awareness): 🤩
Tumblr media
ไม่ยอม (Be Mine) from TharnType, the Kaownah version (very strong melodically, and this performance converted me into a fan of Kaownah who's excellent here; the song, singer and actor deserve to be associated with a better series).
รักคุณยิ่งกว่าใคร (I Love You More Than Anyone), from Cutie Pie 2 You, sung by NuNew Chawarin (hopelessly, somewhat ironically and unapologetically cheesy, this paean to the pageantry of Thai country music or luk thung is so joyful I can't help loving every jangly, bedazzled melisma; I love it as much as the Build Jakapan cover and the Got Jakrapun original – all so addictive, like too‑sweet candy).
คนที่เสียใจคงไม่ใช่เธอ (The One Who Will Be Sorry Is Probably Not You) – theme from Bad Romance The Series (amazingly this works either as the hard-driving original replete with wailing guitars and screamy rock-god vocals by Pete Pitipong, or the soft ballad cover by Tul Pakorn – both have a grip on my heart).
The theme to KinnPorsche by Slot Machine – this is like the theme to Bad Romance but with no brakes at all, racing to the cliff edge and you don't care; with soaring, almost operatic vocals and a relentlessly pounding rhythm that shifts unsettlingly offbeat midway, the Thai original (เพียงไว้ใจ/Just Trust) is already so many kinds of amazing, but the English version (appropriately titled Freefall) is surprisingly not only more than credible, it also screams primally with lyrics that embody the full-blooded, breathless, all-stakes-committed rush of KinnPorsche's action sequences and darker dramatic moments (when the series wasn't unfortunately tripping over its own shoelaces or galumphing about in a clown car).
นิทานพันดาว (Theme to A Tale of Thousand Stars) – but it's the Torfun version sung by Aye Sarunchana that's won me over. 💖
Tumblr media
ฟัง (Listen) from My School President, sung by Lookwa Pijika, Fourth Nattawat, Ford Arun, Satang Kittiphop and Winny Thanawin – you can give this treatise on love so many readings, but my favorite is when it incarnates the love that Mrs. Ratchanee has for her little Gun of a son; the original by Sin Tosaporn Achawanuntakul (featuring โอม Cocktail) isn't half bad either, with the music video also dallying with LGBTQ+ themes, but Winny absolutely does a better job of the bridge in the MSP cover.
คิด(แต่ไม่)ถึง [Same Page?] by Tilly Birds – not too sure this counts as a song from the world of QL because it was only in the original, not-quite-canon Bad Buddy trailer but not in the series itself (except for the one line Pat sings on the terrace of his apartment during his Ep.12 drinking game with Pran); still I'm including it because it's an aural experience like no other, starting out hollow, off-kilter and dissonant before its various polyphonies interweave into a delightfully solid pop song.
Inwza by Panpan Yeeyee – once again, not sure this counts as a song from QL but the made-up word Inwza (not so much the song itself) was mentioned as part of Pat's chat ID in Bad Buddy Ep.1 (significance explained here); nonetheless looking up the word got me connected to this wistful little synth-heavy indie pop number that makes for a refreshingly quirky listen.
เพื่อนเล่น ไม่เล่นเพื่อน (Just Being Friendly) – the My School President version by Fourth Nattawat, Ford Arun and Satang Kittiphop is just as good as (and maybe even slightly better than?) the original by Tilly Birds featuring Milli, but this flawless mashup of the MSP version with NuNew's is also amazing and I rotate between all three. No favorites here; all so boppy and guaranteed to bring a smile to your face. 😍
เลี้ยงส่ง (Farewell Party) by So Cool – this is what Pran references during Bad Buddy's Ep.12 drinking game as the first song he learnt the chords to; totally old-school (dates from 2005) and makes me think of a pre-teen Pran struggling to learn guitar, practising the chords on a song that was already a Thai rock classic at the time.
Stand by หล่อ by New Country – this wasn't in any QL as far as I can tell but the MSP boys performed it in their Prom Night concert and Bas Asavapatr also confirmed having danced to it during one of the Be On Cloud games, so I'm including it because it's so infernally catchy, has roots in Thai luk thung, and the dance video is really SHINee-slick.
Tagging @pandasmagorica, @isaksbestpillow, @colourme-feral, @dudeyuri, @ranchthoughts...
...@chickenstrangers, @lurkingteapot, @airenyah, @dribs-and-drabbles and anyone else who wants to play along. Apologies if you've already been tagged!

Gale Reviews: Wednesday (2022)
Tumblr media
So I finally finished watching the first season of this show. And I will be giving my opinion on how I think it is. So to give proper set up and some organization, here are the categories I will be tackling
The Setting
The Flow
The Supernatural additions
The Addams Essence (do the actors capture that Addams family feel)
The New Characters
The Mystery
With that established, be aware spoilers below
__________________________________________
The Setting
For the simple premise, Wednesday Addams is expelled from her old school after dumping live piranhas (something that is very much in character for Wednesday and reminiscent of another old scene) into the school's pool in retaliation for the boys' water polo team bullying her brother Pugsley. Consequently, her parents Gomez and Morticia Addams enroll her at their high school alma mater Nevermore Academy, a private school for monstrous outcasts, in the town of Jericho, Vermont.
The show takes place mainly in Jericho, and in the academy. In terms of aesthetic, Nevermore doesn’t really capture the creepy nature of the Addams family save for some instances, coming off more as a gothic Hogwarts. The small town of Jericho does capture that small town vibe and is crucial in giving a contrast to nevermore, allowing for us to see how outlandish the academy actually is.
I think they could have done more to make Nevermore stand out as more unsettling in its own right. But interestingly enough I think the best set pieces are in the woods and in pilgrim world. The places where Wednesday looks more out of place the better.
Overall it’s a 7/10 for the set pieces and I hope they do more in season two. Maybe show how creepy the Addams family home is.
___________________________________________
The Flow
The pacing or natural movement of the show. I think it has a bit of a slow start until the mystery is revealed. But afterwards I think the show finds it’s footing, speeding up when there are leads and slowing down when those leads get cold. Wednesday is the driving force of the show, and it’s clear that she has a focus on solving this mystery but everyone else seems to force her to slowdown. Thematically it rarely feels like a forced slowdown.
The show makes it seem like Wednesday is dragged into almost every situation outside of the Mystery while the reverse is true when it does involve the mystery. It never feels like Wednesday catches a break and in that regard it’s amusing.
Though I do feel the ending also was sped up too much for the reveal, but it wasn’t jarring.
Flow I give 8/10.
___________________________________________
The Supernatural Additions
So Im split on most of it. Giving Wednesday visions felt like a contrived plot device and giving everyone some sort of magical power in Nevermore felt like it made it pretty run of the mill magic school… BUT the way the powers for others was used cleverly and some of the magic was used in amusing very Addams humor. I think when it does do it in the way we expect in Addams ways… it works. But I felt like some of it was not needed and felt like kind of a crutch needed to differentiate normal people from the Nevermore students. This doesn’t impact how I feel about the characters though.
5/10
__________________________________________
The Addams Essence
So this is apparently controversial, but I Greatly enjoyed Jenna’s take on Wednesday. She’s tired of everyone’s BS and just wants to do what interests her. She has a tough time expressing emotion but cares for her family and friends. She feels guilt and is just as creepy as Wednesday from the show. You can see the young Wednesday grow up to be her. I think everyone that’s calling her a cliche mean jerk is misunderstanding of what type of person Wednesday is. Now I know it’s a thin line to walk but I think Wednesday walks it well.
Thing is also a delight and he Carries every scene he is in. Very expressive for only being a hand. I think it was perfectly executed.
So while I respect the actor and actress that played Gomez and Morticia, I didn’t really feel the chemistry from the adult iterations. They were passable and they aren’t the main characters in this, but I just didn’t really get the vibe I was accustomed to with them. It felt more Told then shown. Young Morticia and Gomez were great and Gomez’s silent action was the Morticia and Gomez I knew.
Pugsly and Lurch were fine, very little screen time but it was acceptable.
Uncle fester was perfect casting. I even enjoyed the electric powers they gave him. The justification was that he acquired it from so much electrotherapy. Fred Armisen killed it.
Overall I would say that the Addams family was captured in spirit for the most part.
8.5/10
____________________________________________
New Characters
Enid is an amazing character and perfectly balanced out Wednesday. She is in a way her polar opposite, but they work great. I don’t say I ship it but I get why people do. Also she’s one of the few supernatural bits I like. The fact she is an incomplete werewolf is a very Addams choice
The principal being a shapeshifter was a fun bit but I think they could have done more with her and I’m sad that they basically killed her off. I wanted to know more of her past with Morticia.
I did not care for the therapist, she wasn’t a bad character, but she was kind of annoying
The town Sheriff added the element of man fighting against the weirdness for his own personal reasons. I enjoyed his character and how he was willing to work with Wednesday.
Tyler being the normal coffee barista that kind of gets Wednesday was fine. Felt like he was pursuing a manic pixie dream girl, until you find out the secret which makes him WAY more interesting.
Xavier Thorpe (the artist guy) was a total tool and it’s hard to tell if he was written that way or how he comes off, dude is a total “pick me” I wish he was actually the monster but he wasn’t, and it’s just a prick
Bianca Barclay is one of the best character, she starts out as the mean popular girl until you dig deeper and see why she has such a chip on her shoulder, joy Sunday does great work with her.
Marilyn Thornhill the dorm mother is an unassuming character that has some great bits and I especially loved the last episodes with her.
The rest of the characters were fine and did help give to the story in some way.
Overall 9/10
____________________________________________
The Mystery
To summarize, there is a monster attacking people and when it does it takes a body part from them.
Wednesday found herself pulled into the mystery along with a picture showing a vision involving her. It sounds completely unrelated but it is.
And the entire season revolves around Wednesday trying to figure out who or what the monster is and how that picture vision relates to her.
I will assume you’ve all watched the show so it’s pure spoilers going down here.
The reveal that the sheriff’s son was the Hyde was an interesting twist as it explained the sheriff’s distrust of the school after his wife’s death. Her being a Hyde and his son inheriting it.
The dorm mother was actually the long believed dead daughter of the family whose brother tried to kill Gomez after going crazy AND being related to the founder of the town who hunted witches.
Marilyn or actually Laurel Gates, awakened the Hyde using her knowledge of plants. Made the ritual to wake the dead resulting in Joseph Crackstone one of the founders of the town to be revived with evil magic.
The twists and red herrings were fine. It was not an obvious guess on some of the who and why but there were hints leading to Marilyn, and Tyler if one was especially eagle eyed.
Though I will say that Crackstone did feel a bit under developed but he was mainly there just to be the evil fight scene, which is fine.
mystery is 7.5/10
____________________________________________
Final thoughts
I think the show does things very well and while I don’t agree with all the choices, I do think it does capture the spirit of the Addams family while telling a new story.
I give it an 8.2/10
I’d like to see where it goes from here.

So, I just finished your ‘Bestest Girl’ fic and I’m having palpitations.
You, ma’am, understand that very real and initial appeal of Elvis Presley. Oooh boy. That sweet, fresh, hungry boy makes me feral and you captured him perfectly. Also, I loved your gal, she’s so sweet and believable. Thanks for keeping us fed. 💐
oh my goodness ! first of all, let me just say thank ya thank ya thank ya from the bottom of my heart. this means so very much to me. it was such a blast writin' that i'm currently working on a part two ! i'm going to have to give your fics a read when i'm free tonight ! i stumbled across your electrician fic the other day and hearted it so that i could come back to it. no one EVER talks about how he worked at crown electric and was going to night school to become an electrician to take care of his family, and it's honestly so hot to me. so i know i'll be salivating while reading it, lovie.
secondly, ahhhhh ! thanks a million. i was raised by my grandparents, and my grandmother has always been absolutely obsessed with elvis. he was my first love as a child (him and george harrison), and i'm delighted to think that i captured his essence. it was really important to me. eager to explore and hungry- god, what a man.

Thinking about how surprised new comer alexandrians would be seeing daryl this gruff motorcycle bear fighting leather jacket man then you look next to him and his wife is a bubbly dress wearing vegan sweetheart that owns a library
YOU ARE PERFECTLY CAPTURING THEIR ESSENCE LOL okay I'm gonna add a keep reading line cuz you got me talking about my series and once you get me going I can't stop
That's why I love them so much—they're such an unlikely couple (at first glance). They're definitely an embodiment of that "opposites attract" trope, except they actually do have a lot in common, and they're just so cute together I DIE every time I write/read them. I honestly think Daryl is more like Reader on the inside, and Reader is more like Daryl on the inside, too.
I always think of that stupid old meme—Daryl looks like he could kill you but is actually a cinnamon roll, and Beginning Reader looks like a cinnamon roll but could kill you (and she also actually is a cinnamon roll). I mean, both of them could kill you, but they're really both gentle, sensitive souls with insecurities and hopes and dreams, and they both love their families so much. I just think they're such a beautiful, cute, slightly cheesy couple!
And yeah, I like to think people in Alexandria/the Commonwealth have to do a double take when they first realize they're a couple. Daryl's just so rough around the edges and kind of standoffish and just grunts at people (lol), while Reader is just so sweet and open and a little too talkative. She has her moments where she's more callous or when she retreats into herself, but I think that makes her interesting? She's not always super bubbly and kind, sometimes she forgets to be compassionate, and I think that's okay, too. She tries, though. She's always trying, and I like that about her. Daryl's always trying, too, and I think people often forget to mention just how optimistic Daryl is. He believes in fighting the dead and overcoming the world they live in, and he has often said that his group is "building the world back up." He might not always show it, but he's a positive guy, I think. I think he wants a better world for his family (especially Robin and the next little one... whose name I am desperately trying not to reveal but I want to so bad).
I could talk about this series for days oh my god

ARC Review: A Scatter of Light by Malinda Lo
Tumblr media
Order
Add to Goodreads
Publication Date: October 4, 2022
Synopsis:
Award-winning author Malinda Lo returns to the Bay Area with another masterful coming-of-queer-age story, this time set against the backdrop of the first major Supreme Court decisions legalizing gay marriage. And almost sixty years after the end of Last Night at the Telegraph Club, Lo's new novel also offers a glimpse into Lily and Kath's lives since 1955. Aria Tang West was looking forward to a summer on Martha's Vineyard with her best friends--one last round of sand and sun before college. But after a graduation party goes wrong, Aria's parents exile her to California to stay with her grandmother, artist Joan West.Aria expects boredom, but what she finds is Steph Nichols, her grandmother's gardener. Soon, Aria is second-guessing who she is and what she wants to be, and a summer that once seemed lost becomes unforgettable--for Aria, her family, and the working-class queer community Steph introduces her to. It's the kind of summer that changes a life forever.
My Rating: ★★★★★
*My Review below the cut
My Review:
This book was emotionally devastating. That's the best word I can think of to describe it. I turned the last page and read the author's note through my tears, and then I ugly cried for a while. It's poignant and nostalgic and gorgeously written so that you feel everything Aria feels and live breathlessly in the moment with her. Every time I opened the book I was sucked in and forgot about everything else.
Malinda Lo is exceptionally good at capturing a moment in time, especially a moment where the character is right on the cusp of something. I don't remember Last Night at the Telegraph Club being quite so devastating, but I think part of that is my own emotional resonance with this story.
For most of the book, it's like she captured one perfect golden late-summer Northern California afternoon. The kind the stretches on and on, where the light showers everything in gold and you could believe that the moment could last forever. It meshes so well with that last endless summer between high school and college, when you're just beginning to discover yourself.
Aria is on the cusp of adulthood, the cusp of realization that she's maybe not as straight as she once thought. Her crush on Steph simmers just beneath the surface, warring with the impossibility of it all and the electric novelty of her newfound queerness opens up a previously unseen world to her.
At the same time she's having her ideas of her grandmother, her parents, her friends, and her past reshaped as she grows out of her childhood assumptions about them.
The ending circles back to the beginning in a wholly satisfying way that makes everything seem more profound and gives every moment, every gesture weight and meaning.
I love the exploration of time and memories and grief and art, and how they interconnect and weave together. The characters leap off the page, so full of life and well-rounded are they, and I felt them tugging at my heart more insistently than many.
This is a book that everyone should read and that I will probably never read again, because I don't think it would have the same breathless impact the second time through and I'm not sure my heart could take it.
The cover is stunning and complements the story SO well. The cover artist captured the essence of the story perfectly.
*Thanks to Bookishfirst and Penguin Teen for providing an ARC for review.

Note
I've seen you mention Fullmetal Alchemist a few times on your blog. If you don't mind me asking, what was your first viewing experience of the series like? Did you have any favorite characters? Were there any character arcs you thought were written well? What scenes moved you the most? What do you think sets it apart from other anime series?
ok honestly, I had this all typed up...then my computer cliched and deleted it all and I had to avoid it for a few days lol. Thank you so much for your patience, I didn't forget.
So now, here is a spoiler filled rant!
I was in the 5th grade when by bestfriend at the time introduced me to anime. Fullmetal Alchemist 2003 was one of those. Don't watch that one, only watch Brotherhood lol. They absolutely derailed Hiromu Arakawa's vision.
I found a few volumes at my local library and was hooked on reading the whole thing lol. Thats when I found out about the drastic differences around the two anime adaptations.
Every time I re read/watch it I fall more in love with it because it's just so beautiful. She captures the essence of humanity so perfectly, the entire plot is just so beautifully written to manifest everything that makes life precious, valuable, unique, and that all of that is solely human. And that humans have limits.
Like take her manifestations of the seven deadly sins. They are so raw and true to how those sins can manifest in humans. Like Lust, she is the exact opposite of how everyone has even personified the trait. She is not once drawn acting or posing provocative. Her honeytrap for Lust was her covered modestly, and behaving in a delicate manor, not somthing youd expect from a character named Lust. (I could do a full study on each of the homunculus if you'd like lol, I don't want to ramble about them here)
Tumblr media
The attention to detail she has mixing science and religious themes so effortlessly, (because they are never truly separate) is amazing. The first time I watched it, I loved the world she built, how the plot flowed so effortlessly, and every character is unique and adds depth to the story and human nature.
As for my favorite character, that would have to be Scar
Tumblr media
He is just captures the power of forgiveness so well.
His heart was over taken with nothing but recreating the destruction that ravaged his nation, family, and his own body, blinded by grief and hatred. He was so consumed by it, he targeted a child who wasn't even to blame for any of, a victim of the war himself. (great subtle nod to many politics and internal prejudice)
It is through meeting Winry he is able to start to see the impact of his actions.
Tumblr media
It is through Ed that he is able to see past his hatred, and see who he had become.
Tumblr media
It is through discovering the plot against Amestris, that he is able to put aside his pride to help innocents.
It is through his brother he is able to find balance in himself and forgive everyone, the one thing Envy never though possible for humans. Forgiveness.
Tumblr media
Envy tries to provoke him to anger, trying to reignite his hatred and need for revenge by pointing out everything Mustang and Hawkeye did during the war, only to be shocked by their ability to put differences aside and help each other. (something many people could stand to learn)
Tumblr media
Scar’s intracule point to the plot makes me cry every time. He is the most beautiful picture of humanity, the possibilities for change, and in my opinion, shows how God can move and change heart, redeeming even the most angry of people. Even people who committed vile acts disguised under the veil of good in their hatred.
Scar learning to reconstruct his own heart, his people, and his friends nations, is the beautiful ending image to it all. How out of destruction can only bring rebirth, new growth, and change. Seriously love him so much.
Tumblr media
And I feel like every single character arc was so well done and completed perfectly, that nothing felt unfinished at the end. There really isn’t a character I dislike because they are all so well rounded and more than just their surface level ambitions and actions.
What sets this series apart from other animes is how it approaches religion. You can see the harsh influence that Catholicism had on Japan through how it is written in many animes. She doesn't do that. it is written in such a subtle way, that it flows with the cultures and personalities of characters that it isn't their only personality trait. They are people with real emotions, real struggles, and really terrible things happening around them. It feels natural.
And for my favorite moments, there are so many, but these are a few of them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This series will always be in my top ten, and I cant wait to start reading her other series, because this one just moves me every time, and in terms of a plot that can balance serious, funny, and moving, with no fanservice, nothing can ever compare.

Whey Jennings Croons Like A Cowboy With Sentimental Country Ballad “Daredevil” From Forthcoming EP, Just Before The Dawn
Tumblr media
Country singer-songwriter Whey Jennings croons like a Cowboy on the sentimental love song, “Daredevil,” the new single from his forthcoming EP, Just Before The Dawn, due out September 22 by Dirt Rock Empire. The song’s music video exclusively premiered today by the Cowboy Lifestyle Network , and will be available everywhere digitally on Friday, August 25  . “I wrote this song for my beautiful wife,” Whey said. The idea and lyrics just came flowing out of my heart like honey from a hive because of how true it is in reality. I’m her Daredevil and she is my rose petal!”  Fans can watch the new music video now on the Cowboy Lifestyle Network until its premiere on Whey’s YouTube channel this Friday at 12pm ET, along with being featured on CMT.com’s music videos page. The video is also set to roll out on The Heartland Network after the release date. “Some really good friends of mine, singer Justin Jeansonne and his fiance Jaden Barnett, were the actors in the video, which we filmed at the Country Rebel ranch in Tennessee,” Whey continued. “They are some of the most beautiful people I’ve ever met in my life, and I think they perfectly captured the essence of the song.” “Daredevil” is one of six new songs from the EP, and the third single released in 2023 following summer releases of “Old Country Song” and “Wild Child.” Making a monumental comeback since 2022, Whey demonstrates next level songwriting abilities on the new EP. The grandson of Outlaw country pioneers Waylon Jennings and Jessi Colter, Whey is charting his own course in life and with his music. Several of the songs on the forthcoming Just Before The Dawn EP continue to tell his story of redemption, with help from his faith, family and friends. With his newfound lifestyle at-hand, Whey is already beginning to establish his own musical legacy within his iconic Jennings family tree. “People like us, traditional country music fans, are a dying breed, and by us I don’t mean just artists,” Whey explained. “There’s a large cult following for old country music loving men and women and we are all like-minded individuals, that when old country songs are played, it brings us all together. With me and fans, I ain’t never gone wrong with an old country song so you can plan on me to keep the tradition alive for as long as I can.” Single name: “Daredevil” Songwriters: Whey Jennings, Dylan Cornell Record Label: Dirt Rock Empire Audio release date: August 25, 2023 Video release date: August 25, 2023 Audio producers: Gary Carter at Danny’s Place Long Hollow Studio and GC Studio Video Director/producer: Giovanne Gotay, Melissa Gotay Pre-Save/Buy/Stream: cmdshft.ffm.to/jbtd Upcoming Tour Dates: AUG 22 – West End Fair / Gilbert, Pa. With large boots to fill, the young Dirt Rock Empire recording artist with a booming baritone voice as big as Texas, finds himself with a few expectations to live up to. Seeking to establish his own musical legacy as one of the few remaining torch-bearing country traditionalists out there, Whey can instantly take his fans back to a time and sound his Grandfather Waylon and Grandmother Jessi gave birth to in the 70’s. Whey has two studio recorded EP releases under his belt, 2020’s Gypsy Soul and 2022’s If It Wasn’t for The Sinnin’, both which revealed musical stories of how Whey was coming to terms with a partying lifestyle, knowing he needed to make a change. On his third EP, Just Before The Dawn, out September 22, 2023, Whey shares more stories about his struggles with addiction, finding sobriety, and redemption through faith, family and friends. Interjecting his own modern-day approach to songwriting and storytelling, while staying rough around the edges with an unpolished grit and honest demeanor, Whey’s musical roots run as deep as his family’s name would imply. Yorkshire Werewolf: My Comedy Heroes
Tumblr media
Mike Yarwood RIP
Alas, another British Entertainer has exited stage left.
Comedy impressionist Mike Yarwood has died aged 82.
Mike, in my opinion, was Britain's first legit TV impressionist, working on stage and small screen in a career spanning many decades.
I myself grew up with "light entertainment" TV shows. They had the magic to unite the family, sitting together, watching the Google box and sharing the laughter.
Mike's uncanny ability to capture the mannerisms of the celebs he "took off" plus a generous use of catchphrases gave his early shows a certain gravitas, putting him in the same tier with Morecambe and Wise, Michael Crawford, and Stanley Baxter.
He would later try a more satirical take, targeting British politicians, and his impersonations of Harold Wilson, Ted Heath, and Denis Healy were legendary.
Tumblr media
Yarwood was born in Manchester in 1941 and began his career as a stand-up comedian. He made his television debut in 1961 and quickly became a household name. The "Mike Yarwood Show" ran for 12 years, and his impersonations covered a wide range of figures, from politicians to pop stars trying to stay relevant and connect with a younger audience.
Tumblr media
Yarwood was always spot-on, and with the help of his writers, he was able to capture the essence of his subjects with just a few well-chosen words and gestures. He was a truly gifted mimic, his ability to perfectly reproduce the facial mannerisms without using make-up was uncanny.
Sadly, Yarwood's popularity started to wane and by the early 1980s, his shows lacked the magic of his mimicry, but his use of split screen technology allowing him to appear as several characters at once was ground breaking. TV work dried up but he continued to perform on stage and in television specials. He was awarded an OBE in 1986 for his services to entertainment.
I had the privilege as a child of seeing him live in a summer show in Blackpool, England, in the early 80s.
He was sharing the bill with " Basil Brush", the TV puppet. My main recollection was my gran slept through most of the show, and at times I think I did. To be truthful, it wasn't his fault.
Tumblr media
Comedy was evolving, becoming more edgy. Satirical comedy grew with "Not the Nine O'Clock News" and the puppet show "Spitting Image," which showcased the voice talent of young mimics. Alternative comedy slowly replaced sitcoms and double acts. Shows such as "The Comic Strip Presents," "The Young Ones," and "Black Adder" foreshadowed the end of light entertainment comedy.
Impressionist shows did eventually evolve, with "Dead Ringers," "The Alistair McGowan & Ronnie Ancona Show," and "Rory Bremner, Bird & Fortune" continuing the art.
Yarwood's death has surprised many people who thought erroneously he had already passed away. Which is a sad reflection on how we treat our yesterday heroes.
Tumblr media
He retired from public life in the mid-2000s. He had personal demon's, maybe due to the pressure to stay relevant when TV bigwigs decide that you aren't funny or young enough anymore. He was a true original, respected by every decent mimic as "the gov'nor" and as it is traditional in the UK, the TV channels will show repeats of his shows, some classic moments, wheeling out "z list" celebs saying how much he meant to them, making various remarks about " how it was different back in the seventies" rather than repeating his back catalogue when he was around to enjoy it himself and find new fans! (Sigh! But if you haven't seen any of mike's TV output, there are a number of clips on YouTube, some do require trigger warnings due to dubious make up decisions, plus there are some DVD sets but they are very expensive and hard to come by)
My sympathy to his family and close friends. So shall we raise a glass in the memory of a true British comedy legend.
Until next time,
Seethee soon!

"Speed Racer" --A Review
This is one of those movies that you sort of hear about from time to time in passing. The word "cult classic" get used a lot when people talk about it, but despite that word of mouth, it's also a movie that I had been thoroughly uninterested in watching for years now.
Tumblr media
But, one family movie night as we were scrolling through HBO Max (or, as it's about to be rebranded for reasons passing understanding: MAX), it popped up and not wanting to watch another cartoon that the kids had all seen before, we decided to give it a go and you know what? It was actually pretty good-- certainly worthy of the "cult classic" rep it has picked up over the years.
Speed Racer (Emile Hirsch) is a young man who was born into a racing family (Independent Racer Motors) and is absolutely obsessed with the automobile racing. His parents Mom (Susan Sarandon) and Pops (John Goodman) run the company and his younger brother Spritle (Paulie Litt), his pet chimp Chim Chim, mechanic Sparky (Kick Gurry) and girlfriend Trixie (Christina Ricci) are all involved.
Speed is eating up the world of racing, but he's also haunted by the (presumed) death of his older brother, Rex, who was branded a cheater and died in a fiery crash. Speed starts to get offers from the big racing conglomerates and gets an extensive pitch from EP Royalton of Royalton Motors (Roger Allam) and is also approached to work with Musha Motors who are trying to prevent their company from being brought out.
Still believing in his family's company and the purity of the sport, Speed opts to stick with the family business- but Royalton reveals how foolish that decision is by telling speed how corrupt the Worldwide Racing League actually is and how winners are predetermined which shatters Speed's illusions about racing, but eventually the mysterious Racer X (Matthew Fox) and Inspector Detector (Benno Furmann) who have been working together to expose the corruption in the WRL bring him back in and convince him to race in the Casa Cristo 5000 (the dangerous race where brother Rex lost his life) and to expose the corruption in the WRL once and for all.
(Spoiler Alert: unsurprisingly, the good guys triumph here- the details are more interesting and spoiler-y so that's all I'll say.)
Look, I don't know much about movie-making. I'm not a film buff or a film student or anything like that- but the contrast between this movie and the Wachowski's earlier work on the Matrix is really incredible. Speed Racer is an assault of color and although I'm not into psychotropic drugs, I think it's a fairly safe bet that some shrooms or acid plus this movie would make for a fucking wild-ass trip. The colors are so bright and vivid in this movie, it's brinks on being too much.
I have seen the odd Speed Racer cartoon here and there over the years, but I'm not deep into the manga or the anime- of which there is plenty out there, but I would say going on what I know, this movie captures the essence of the old cartoons perfectly- I wish I knew enough about anime to say for sure, but it feels like it also gets that anime aesthetic down pat as well-- in that sense, it's a distant cousin of Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, which also gets the roots of it's source material very very right when translated to the big screen.
Overall: If you're going to make a video game adaptation of any racing video game, watch this movie first-- it'll help. The race courses are bananas, the racing is insane, but it's also filmed in such a way that it feels tense, taut and very well despite the vivid colors and gravity defying cars and courses they're racing on. The cast is surprisingly excellent across the board and this manages to be an entertaining movie that stays true to it's roots and doesn't tip over into camp or cringe. It more than earns it's 'cult classic' hype and if you want to break out of your family movie night rut or are just looking for something to watch, you can't go wrong with Speed Racer. My Grade: *** out of ****

This image of a Shishangaan pride Lioness captures her essence for me perfectly, looking a little weary and stoic, she is touched by a drop of backlighting of the sun as it rises over the Lebombo Mountains, giving her just a hint of glamour. Sleek, with soulful, intent eyes, she has her mind on her duties, closely watching a herd of Cape Buffalo and thinking of feeding her family, raising and protecting her cubs. I am amazed at her physical resilience, day after day, throwing herself with complete commitment at a 900kg Buffalo, slamming into it, avoiding hooves and horns, being thrown, pummelled, and against all odds, with the help of the sisterhood, she is usually triumphant and her cubs and pride are provided for, for another day.
By contrast all the glory go to the pride males, the glamorous beasts with large manes, their fancy names and their own Facebook and Instagram following. Looking at the Lioness I am tempted to be a little cynical. The males are portrayed as the protectors of the pride and territory, their noble role in life.
Yet, in a sarcastic moment, all these lords are protecting is their entitlement to bully the females and cubs off a hard-fought meal, their entitlement to a harem of ready females at their beck and call, their right to roam, laze around and sleep. Their role is purely one of self-interest, preventing other males from usurping them from their place of privilege.
This Lioness truly is the heart and soul, the essence, the lifeblood, of her pride.

White your fishmonger will love
Many of our long-time list members know that the best values in our Cellar are the appellation wines -- those made from a blend of proximate vineyard sites in a single viticultural area. Our goal for these California wines is to capture the nuance of that area.
Does Russian River Valley mean something on a label? We think it should. 2018 Estero, Russian River Valley
If you visit the Michelin-starred establishments in our area -- Singlethread Farms and The Farmhouse Inn -- you will find LIOCO’s 2018 Esteo from the Russian River Valley featured as the house pour (a source of LIOCO pride considering the number of local wineries that covet those spots!).
The anchor vineyard source for this California wine has long been the Teac Mor Vineyards, which our bohemian friend Steven Moore farms “egeneratively,” a system that enhances biodiversity, enriches soils, improves watersheds, and enhances ecosystems. There is a palpable hum coming from his vineyard — a cacophony of bees and birds and frogs and the bleating of pygmy goats.
The vines here are rooted in some very old, complex soils of volcanic ash, river stones, loam, and clay. To hear Steven speak of the geological drama that played out in this Valley millions of years ago is to understand better why the wines from his ranch are so full of character.
The 2018 Estero is one of the more crystalline and razor-sharp California wines, with a nervy weave of salinity tucked into its preserved lemon and fennel bulb core. The flavors from this wine by LIOCO, considered one of the best wineries in Healdsburg, are at once opulent and energetic, making for a long, clean, citrusy finish.
2018 Las Arenas, Santa Cruz Mountains *first time offered to our mailing list* Our success in Santa Cruz is primarily allied to our partnership with local legend Prudy Foxx. Known as the vine whisperer, Prudy manages our vineyards in the Aptos-Corralitos zone, and she does so in a mysterious, “witchy” way.
Each vine is managed uniquely, and we’ve seen her pitching crushed-up oyster shells from her pocket into the rows. Las Arenas, which means “the sands” in Spanish, refers to the deep sandy soils found in this pocket beside the cold Monterey Bay.
A blend of three Vineyard Designates—La Marisma, Howard Family, and Bruzzone—this Chardonnay captures the essence of the heavily forested, fog-choked maritime zone and yields a wine with the electric sap found solely in California’s most extreme growing zones.
These excellent California wines from Lioco, one of the best wineries in Healdsburg, lead with a slatey, wet stone note, some exotics like golden kiwi & starfruit, and finishes with just-ripe green pears and brioche. Sara and I pair this wine with panko-crusted ling cod finished with flaky sea salt and a squeeze of Eureka lemon.

Both the 2018 Estero from the Russian River Valley and the 2018 Las Arenas from grapes grown in the Santa Cruz Mountains offer clean, fresh flavors and a finish that perfectly complements nicely prepared fish dishes.
