And really Stede is exactly the Stede he’s always been. He’s just figured out how to pull it off. But he’s always wanted to have the guts to kill the bully. He’s always wanted to be the man’s man. He’s always wanted to be competent and kind and welcoming and dangerous. He’s always wanted to be adored and feared. And he’s always cried when he kills. He’s never been sure if he’s earned his crew or his name. He’s always loved the quiet moments with Ed more than anything. He’s never let himself think about what that means. He’s never wanted Ed to choose the quiet in those moments over piracy itself.
None of this is new. What’s new is the attention it’s getting them, the way Ed is no longer willing to accept the danger that comes with that, and the way Ed believes he can choose on his own to leave all this behind and survive — that he ought to even if Stede won’t come with him — that he ought to go on without him and figure out how to live.
