Blorbo bingo!! Thoughts about zhang qiling?
HI ADRIAN THANK YOU FOR ASKING ME ABOUT XIAOGE :D
Tumblr media
most fandom takes are incorrect: we all know my everbright opinions that “amnesiac sex kitten” xiaoge is stupid at best and a wild mischaracterisation of xiaoge that falls into the same dehumanisation he faces in canon at worse, but hey—it’s never a bad time to bring this up again! i don’t know if this is a “general” fandom take or if i just stumble across it a lot because the ao3 tag is small, but i loathe it.
there’s probably a deeply-seated reason i love them: well. yeah. but shhhh we will not think on that. much.
has done nothing wrong (is a war criminal): look he’s over a century old and has memory issues and he’s a professional tomb raider-slash-mercenary for hire (previously). i’d be more surprised if there WASN’T a legion of skeletons in his closet, but listen—i don’t care about that. what’s important to me is that he is my blorbo.
free space: has so much trauma and issues it makes me vibrate to think about. i could not have chosen a better media to get invested in if i tried.
pretty privilege: i may be a lesbian but i would have to be blind to not see how often xiaoge is cast as stupidly pretty men. they’re never like, dangai pretty (that’s it’s own genre, not necessarily “more” pretty than other actors, just different), but i’d be lying if i said for example xiao yuliang or huang junjie aren’t aesthetically really nice to look at. generally if there’s a man playing xiaoge you can be certain in another time he could have been an artist’s muse.
they are the white noise in my brain i can’t live a normal life: self explanatory. no more to be said here.
brain rot: yeah. no comment.
biting my fist: he makes me like INSANE insane and if i don’t do something about it i will explode into a hundred thousand pieces and suffer eternal torment. there’s not many things about him i DON’T think about.
STOP PUTTING THEM IN SITUATIONS: both a wish and a gleeful confirmation. he canonically gets a semi retirement in ycbj, the post-canon series, but also just generally i think he should be allowed to revel in the joys of a mundane life more. take him to the grocery store to buy rice or something.
i’m so normal about them :))))))))): to be fair i think we would all be surprised if i WAS normal about him. i’ve loved him since sha hai and he didn’t even appear in that show beyond flashbacks.
not enough canon/underrated: he’s one third of the iron triangle but i will literally never stop wanting more tie sanjiao content okay. they could make a show that was entirely an infomercial and i would watch it. would not pay for it though (i say as if i ever pay for the shows i watch).

Here’s an impression of all the Zhang Qiling’s from The Lost Tomb adaptations and some criticisms
because I have nothing better to do.
These are based on my personal viewing experience and reviews by novel fans
they may not match how you think about these versions and that’s fine.
We all have our personal preferences.
Tumblr media
The Lost Tomb (2015, drama)
played by Yang Yang
2010’s eboy vibes
Probably buys fingerless gloves from Hot Topic
Emo hair (I will not stop talking about that hair cuz that’s all I remember)
Tattoos looking like they’re drawn with a ballpoint pen
*Strikes pose to show off abs*
Most audience were unsatisfied with the hairstyle and how the actor played ZQL simply as the “cold, strong, expressionless” character without any depth.
Tumblr media
Time Raiders (2016, movie)
played by Jing Boran
Sci-fi steampunk aesthetic (this was supposed to be a movie about tombs…)
Probably bench presses with his 200 pound sword
THICC
Fur coat fashion
“Not bad.”
“I know.”
--- Actual lines from the movie, i swear im not making this up
“There is no movie in dmbj adaptation.”
Yeah most fans don’t want to acknowledge the existence of this movie...
Tumblr media
Tomb of the Sea (2018, drama)
played by Xiao Yuliang
he is baby
Exists only in flashbacks
Had less than 8 minutes of screen time but somehow nailed it
Him with the robe (藏袍) it’s just  *chef’s kiss*
Highly recommend behind the scenes video of the Xin Yue Restaurant scene cuz they edited so much of the stunts out.
Like how a tattoo artist on Bilibili analyzed, this version of ZQL didn’t really have the best tattoo design. Also in one of the flashback fight scenes (ep 35) , the editing was so awkward it made it look like the people he fought fell before he even kicked them.
Tumblr media
The Lost Tomb 2 (2019, drama)
played by Cheng Yi
Defies gravity.
Can fly
Learned martial arts from some sort of xianxia drama
*Does a split in the middle of fighting some wolves*
Sir, this is an adventure drama, not an idol romance drama
*holds Wu Xie gently*
This version of ZQL was kinda out of character in a fanfiction kinda way. Also the fight scenes relied too much on wires, which some say it’s because the actor is used to playing xianxia dramas.
Tumblr media
Reboot (2020, drama)
played by Huang Junjie
Get’s his own soundtrack for every dramatic entrance
The hood still confuses me, like, what is that thing at the front?
Smirks 24/7
Like dude why are you still smiling
Lost so much blood, I’m starting to think he’s invincible
Fans complained about how this version of ZQL smiles too much and is being treated like a background character. The Iron Triangle vibe isn’t really there, perhaps it’s because the actors didn’t communicate enough with each other.
Tumblr media
Ultimate Note (2020, drama)
played by Xiao Yuliang
Yeah I know it’s the same actor as in Tomb of the Sea but I think he deserves a whole another section
Cat energy
Is finally loved.
Has an 8 pack but still skinny af (Like, somebody pls feed this child)
DEM LEGS THO THEY HELLA LONG
Did most of his own stunts, which is pretty impressive
Everyone say thank you Ultimate Note cast and crew
Unlike other adaptations, in Ultimate Note we get to see more of ZQL’ vulnerable moments, like the Akun flashback, getting amnesia, and getting injured multiple times.

DID SOMEONE SAY BODY LANGUAGE COMPARISON???
I heard the sweet, dulcet tones of acting meta on this post and could not resist her call, so @xcziel, @foxofninetales, this one is for you.
THE LIU CHANG DMBJ CHARACTER META: WANG CAN vs LIU SANG
So first of all lemme just say I love these bitches, and what’s interesting about Liu Chang is that he plays them on opposite ends. There’s not much he can do about the fact that, y’know, he’s the same-ass person, but there are some very distinct differences between Liu Sang and Wang Can, which we will be talking about now.
Liu Sang photo cred: @foxofninetales
Wang Can photo cred: @xcziel
Jiang Wu photo cred: me screenshotting @xia-xueyi’s Moonfall Echo subs (ep. 13)
PART ONE: BODY LINES
I’ve talked about body lines before! But now we get to look at it from the same actor in two different characters! As a recap, straight lines are strong, sturdy, confident, and straightforward; curved lines are weaker, but more interesting and more dynamic.
For example!!
Tumblr media
We got our bitch Wang Can here!! This is our first look at this slimy man, and look! He’s like a square!!! All straight lines, all ups and downs. Him body a square!! The costume people also do a great job of boxing him up bc of the tailoring of his jacket, and the two neutral color palette. There’s no embellishments, no decor. This is a straightforward man!! He’s not hiding anything except exactly how much of a bitch he is
(Also notice that his hands are showing and in fists. This will be important in a minute.)
Next, we have our favorite boy Liu Sang, showing up for the first time (ignore the differences in angles):
Tumblr media
Oho! He’s a curvy motherfucker!! Aside from the fact that his clothes are now tailored correctly to demonstrate his natural curves, this mans is also curving himself! His arms! Are loose! And bent!! His head and neck aren’t nearly as emphasized! And! AND!!!! His hands are in his fucjing POCKEEETTTSSS. That indicates FURTIVENESS! That indicates MYSTERY! We’re going to find some things OUT about this boy and we’re gonna like it!!!
In comparison, look at Jiang Wu:
Tumblr media
LIU CHANG U BEAUTIFUL BITCH. He fucking BENT HIS ARM. He kept one straight and BENT THE OTHER!!! Oh joyous occasion!! We have a DYNAMIC BOY!! but not too dynamic—peep that hidden hand! Also I love this bc it was TWO DIFFERENT LIU CHANG CHARACTERS IN THE SAME SHOW!!! :D see!! Here’s Liu Sang again!
Tumblr media
THIS IS A CONFIDENT LIU SANG!!!! He is CHANGED! He is capable of expressing emotions now! Look at just how much body language he has going on, while in comparison, Jiang Wu and Wang Can are like creepy Wood Baby Puppets. His body shape is boxy again, but that’s bc he’s the protagonist of this one. The plot hinges on him, he’s gotta be sturdy.
WHAT WE HAVE DETERMINED SO FAR:
Wang Can is straight lines, no hidden agenda (which is funny cause he’s a Bad Guy)
Liu Sang is dynamic lines and movement, and alludes to mysterious ✨secrets✨
Jiang Wu is a mix of the two and also a dumb dork (that’s not from the body language, I just think he’s funny)
PART TWO: HAIR, BABY!
Once again I owe my life to costuming people. Someday I’ll write that Mystic Nine costuming meta but today we’re focusing on Liu Chang and, specifically, his HAIR PEOPLE!!! I love them and would die for them literally
Once again, ladies and gentlemen and all my glorious they/thems, Wang Can:
Tumblr media
OOOOOH I hate his slimy RAT FACE lemme AT EM. Ahem. Regardless, let’s take a look at this BITCH, shall we? We have: straight line face angles!! Very standard shape, BUT this is all accented by the fact that his hair is S C R A P E D back to within an inch of its life, like. Ahem. Sir. Please. Also this man’s got CONTOUR on. If u look at literally any pics/videos of Liu Chang out of character he is NOT this angular. His head is just as rectangular as his body, and the pulled back hair emphasizes his face, which is interesting as he doesn’t do a whole lot with it.
Alternatively, Liu Sang:
Tumblr media
This is a nice boy!!! This is a nice soft boy!!! Look his face has CURVES that are emphasized by the glasses (which also draw attention to his eyes, which is good bc that’s where he does the most work, which we’ll get to later) and the HAIR!!! His hair is soft!! It’s flowy! It’s curvy! He conditions!!! This boy is approachable and will Not shoot you One Million Times with a Machine Gun. This also works with the Liu Sang Signature Ponytail, as he leaves thick-enough bang pieces out to also give the illusion of curves around his face. Also his nose and cheekbones are NOT as strongly contoured, so the angularity of his face is softened as well
WHAT WE HAVE DETERMINED SO FAR
dmbj hair and makeup people were doing the absolute most
Wang Can’s hair gives us the most access to The Face, giving him a slick, straight look, and also something else which we will discuss next
Liu Sang is Soft and Curved bc of the hair and glasses, primarily
Oh speaking of fucking which you know who else is soft??? Huang Junjie. That’s the softest man I have ever seen. His xiaoge is my favorite bc it’s perfectly believable that he’s Butter Inside based solely on his Cheeks (again, it’s the hair people doing the Lord’s work)
PART THREE: IT’S ALL IN THE FACE
The face is the actor’s best friend, and Liu Chang definitely uses his well. We know him as being sort of stoic, more on the Xiao-Ge end of things than the Wu Xie side, but if u compare Liu Sang to Wang Can, LS is going HAM with the facials.
Let’s take a look!
Tumblr media
Fuck me UP!!!!!! Look at him!! This is one of the earlier episodes too so we haven’t even gotten to the real good stuff but!!!! Look at his eyebrows!!! Look at how wide his eyes get (once again, the glasses are jumbotroning the peepers)! Look at his unhappy lil mouth!! That’s a whole REALM of facial expression, and so early on in our journey!
Meanwhile, Fuckboy Prime:
Tumblr media
(Pardon the garbage screencap, my laptop broke on me this week and I am Suffering)
This is at the very end of Wang Can’s time with us; he’s fighting and he’s going to die and he KNOWS it, but this bitch doesn’t even draw his eyebrows together. Mcwhomst???? Bitch u GOTTA give us more than that I’m BEGGING u
The other interesting thing about their differing facial expressions is that Liu Sang emotes mostly with his eyes, and Wang Can emotes mostly with his mouth. This is very obvious in the clip @xcziel posted, esp when he starts doing the whole gesturing-with-his-chin thing, but it’s prominent throughout.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These two screenshots were taken like fifteen seconds apart. He does a whole face journey, but only with his mouth. His eyes stay fixed; they move, sure, but they don’t get any wider or anything like that.
Liu Sang, however is always doing stuff with his eyes. For example (I couldn’t find an image of it quick enough but I know that @kholran has this gifset), the sacrifice scene where he looks up at Wu Xie with the biggest, most pleading and questioning eyes imaginable?? Kills me. The DEPTH in those bad boys. Fuck me UP.
This also checks out when we remember the glasses. Since they emphasize the eyes, we’re drawn to that part of Liu Sang’s face, so it makes sense that the majority of his expression would happen there. This is also prominent with his hearing abilities; whenever he’s trying to focus them (or get us to focus on him), he not only turns his eyes away, he SHUTS THEM, which means we as the audience know that there’s something going on underneath the surface, and really highlights the fact that this is an unusual and cool power!
With Wang Can, however, the structure of his face and absence of Hair Curves directs the eye to his mouth, so we watch that to tell what’s going on in his head. It’s all about directing the eye, and Liu Chang is very good at knowing where people are going to be looking!
SO: WHAT HAVE WE LEARNED?
Liu Sang, Wang Can, and Jiang Wu are all very distinctly characterized through their body language
The same actor becomes different characters by using their toolkit (the body) to its full potential
Hair and makeup people are Wizards
Wang Can is a Whole-Ass Ho and I do not miss him even a little bit
Liu Sang’s body dynamics change over time and I love that for him!!
I’m a giant nerd the end

Hiiii!!! 💫💕🌸🥳
Can I bother with a question... I was (re)watching that zhang qiling edit (not today) - 'cause it's so cool, btw- and I wondered if Reboot Xiaoge’s your favourite one...? And if you're up to answering, what do you think about the other adaptations? Especially (our small bean) xiao yuliang's interpretation of xiaoge?
🤗🌺💐🐰💕
Hey, my precious patootie hehe ILY it always makes me very happy knowing that you rewatch my vids <3
lol dang it, I was kinda hoping to avoid this question, just because I feel like I'd find it hella hard to explain some things, but I'll try my best and hopefully it'll make some sense xD
I'll start from afar bc I wanna try to explain my reasonings, since I don't want to go without arguments into such highly debated question lolz. I talked about this a bit in my previous asks somewhere, but not broadly as to why that one guy hit all the right spots.
So throughout the books Wu Xie always does this wonderful thing, where he very tangibly describes the feeling he gets when Xiaoge is near, I mean like the aura around him. And he always somehow does it so colorful, that this mix of safety, assurance, calmness, composure and some things I can't quite put into one noun, that he brings to him, I think everyone who've read the books can recognize as this almost magical "Xiaoge feeling". It's not just the way he acts in some dangerous situations or smth like that. It's just everything. You either have it or you don't. And here goes my first argument... to me none of them, except for Huang Junjie and Yuliang have it.
I mean it's not even the obvious stuff, it's like the way they move during the action scenes, the way they even stand and hold themselves, the way they touch Wu Xie, the tone of their voices (both of which are like soothing as fuck), little things you'd think wouldn't matter, but when you watch it and all the puzzle pieces are together, you're like... fuck yeah, thats him.
Also not really that weighty of a point, but to me there's always a joy to see that the actor who plays the character not only gets what's he's playing, but also loves it, bc it's always seen on screen. Usually when some asked about the character they play and what they have in common for example they answer with obvious things like if some character is introverted they're like "well I also don't talk very much" or smth like that, you know what I mean. When I was watching interviews of Yuliang and Huang Junjie I was just smiling so much, bc they've said such things that made me go "yeah, Qiling is safe in their hands".
In Reboot case working in such close proximity with the author definitely also played a huge role here. Bc it kinda gets complicated in some aspects since the books are written from Wu Xie's point of view and you can't only base your picture on his perspective, just bc it's coming from a person who after being basically told "you're my whole world" goes "I'm just a person he randomly passes by in his long life" in his thoughts. Not only he's utterly clueless and dumb when it comes to all this, that he wouldn't notice the way Qiling looks at him and other things, its also not that kind of book, that would go "I suddenly caught poker face looking at me like I'm his whole existence" (and I honestly don't want it to be that book lmao). So you have to take into the account here stuff like what author says to get the whole picture, bc if you look at that from the point of Qiling's view for example, this shit takes a whole wild turn. So I really loved that in UN and Reboot ways of showing Qiling's feelings were well thought out and fit the timeline.
Bc it also works both ways, when it comes to other adaptations. Like Qiling is very and I mean ETREMELY hard to win over. We all know that it was a very long process of gaining his trust and even longer for him to fall for Wu Xie to the point of him being his everything. So what I want in those interpretations is for them to get at which point of their relationships what Xiaoge's behavior makes sense. I do not need any fanservice if it ruins the character, I'll just hate it. The thing that their feelings didn't come out of nowhere is what I LOVE about this ship, bc I'm not the kind of person who believes in "we love for nothing" thing and love at first sight thing (only "got hots for each other" at first sight), bc thats bull. Wu Xie became his everything after a long LONG process of getting to know each other. At the beginning tho he was the same stranger to him as everyone else. So what Reboot Qiling feels for Wu Xie is not what UN's Qiling feels for Wu Xie yet and what UN's Qiling feels for Wu Xie is not what Lost Tomb's Qiling feels for Wu Xie (which at that point was nothing). And I feel like not everyone gets the fact that you can totally wreck the character if you make him behave not the way he behaved in that particular time. Like for example, if someone would make a MDZS adaptation where at the very beginning of their relationships LZ treats WWX the way he treated him after the reincarnation just because "who cares, it's still LZ", that would be dumb af, see what I mean. So Xiaoge having a weakness for Wu Xie in part one is automatically not a Xiaoge to me, bc a huge part of his character and the thing NPSS speaks a lot about is just how IMPOSSIBLE it is for someone to catch his attention and how long it took Wu Xie to get there. So let's just say to me UN and Reboot Qilings for the first time didn't feel like some mashup or character summary/parody, they were Qilings the way they are supposed to be in that part of the story, bc it was the only times someone actually bothered to coordinate it.
Now as to why I prefer one to another. Xiaoge has this thing... the way he holds himself with other people, that is sometimes intentionally and sometimes unintentionally suppressing.
Like everyone knows that if you're a passerby, Qiling genuinely doesn't fucking care and would in fact be pretty harsh about it in terms of treating people like they do not deserve their attention. He won't be like "please, don't bother me", he simply ignored them like an empty space. He is also like that with acquaintances who in his opinion do not deserve his respect like that girl who went hysterical, bc she was upset that he was the only one who wasn't drooling on her like all other men on the crew, Chen Wenjin, Wu Xie's uncles and etc. He's not openly disrespectful unless they trigger him in some way (usually by trying to act superior or later on for not treating Wu Xie right), but if they do, he will in fact remind them their place in sometimes a very rude way, at times humiliating them in front of ppl bc he looks younger than them and talking starts.
He's always doing things on his own terms and hates being told what to do. Like he legit scared Chen Wenjin just with a look and the tone of his voice when he said "let go", when she tried to command him on the mission and grabbed him trying to lecture him about what he should or shouldn't do. That's why Wu Erbai didn't even try anything like this and let him do whatever he needed to do and equally lead the mission in Reboot. And why the scene where Wu Xie 'commands' "Xiaoge, come back" and he immediately listens holds another special place in my heart. Bc he NEVER and I mean NEVER allows such things to ANYONE.
So here I came to a point of why despite loving them both dearly, my favorite Xiaoge is Huang Junjie.
I have this dissonance with Yuliang's version when to me in many scenes it felt like he and Wu Xie are the same age. Like if he was Xiaoge, but in his 20s. In his interactions with Chen Wenjin the dynamics was turned upside down, with him being okay with her telling him what to do and just in general the way she behaved with him. Same as like I didn't always quite believe him to be on par with older generation or even Pangzi, it just felt like he was truly younger than them. Some scenes that I do find extremely cute just don't fit book Xiaoge at all, I'm talking about some moments like his face when Wu Xie gave him food, or him pouting and many things he's done, when you were going "uwu he's a baby". He just never gives me this feeling in the books ever, not just bc he's 100 years old, but sad fact here.. bc he's simply unable to behave that way. Like in the books you'll desperately want to shower him with love, but he's just... I can't quite explain, it's very sad.
I guess it's just you know these characters, who are like hundreds years old, but look like they're 18? I think you have to be very careful with how you write those, so you could deliver that. And in UN because of some changed dynamics and scenes I straight up forgot about it, until Wu Xie threw some joke like "he's an old man" in front of a restaurant.
In Reboot Xiaoge could make Wu Erbai stutter with one move, put Yuliang's version in the same scene, I just don't think it would've worked. Like I'm trying to imagine him telling UN's Wu Erbai what to do and having troubles already haha. Same as I don't think he's capable to be genuinely mad at Wu Xie, and HJJ nailed it esp in one of my fav when Wu Xie was laughing at Pangzi's joke about him catching cold. The look he gave him and how ZYL just retreated was priceless xD. And boy could Qiling get angry with him in the books!
Otherwise I didn't have any drastic fall outs there, like with Joseph's Wu Xie and Ah Ning's death, because that was just too much of a difference, but there were still moments where it was once again this the same scene completely different emotion thing. He was more tolerable to ppl in general here, more pliable. And 50% of the time he gave me the cute lost kitten type, which I just cannot connect with the feeling he gave me in the books. His personality is a cat type 100%, but like seriously "cute baby" is the last word combination I would ever apply to book Xiaoge, but with Yuliang's version it's easily applied. So small bean he is indeed. With Joseph and in UN it works incredibly perfect to me, but the way he is in UN is at times too gentle. And there are lots of scenes where Joseph himself looked at him in a way "you're too cute, let me pinch your cheeks" kind of way, or the way he like sat down next to him on the coast, he was a bit babying him at times. I can't imagine book pingxie doing that. It's just a whole different vibe, the way he takes care of him, the way he lets him take care of him... it's...uuuuuuuuu another vibe (see, I'm so good at explaining lmao).
It's also kinda funny to me, bc HJJ who's the smallest and who irl truly a kitten never once gave me that feeling on screen for some reason. The one babied and loved by every crew and old ppl, who was cutely hiding behind ZYL's back on set, who won't sue an ex who almost ruined his career bc of how stupid she is, bc he "didn't want to hurt her", who according to staff can't even step on a fly, whom CMH was petting for several minutes after he had to hit him with a prop brick bc he didn't wanna do it lmao. I was just like.. ok, this is hilarious, bc I in fact didn't expect him to be a small bean, so watching all the bts made me go LOOOOL. Probably ZYL acting like a 3 year old helped him transform and the age difference problem got lost lmao
As for other adaptations. You know I can't watch seriously "Lost Tomb", I think some ppl probably have some nostalgic feeling about it, but I'm sorry, to me it's fucking hilarious. Like I've already said it looks like some type of twilight parody thing or smth. Soft damselle Wu Xie esp killed me, bc 1st when he ever was that, 2nd in the first book he's salty af, I don't even know this dude in this interpretation, I was like who's this. YangYang I know him from other things, I really don't think it's his role. I know the script and everything is bad. I know the costume and hair are horrendously funny, but it's just I was watching him in those action scenes and was like no... just I'm sorry but I'm not feeling it. I simply just don't know what to say about the whole thing seriously, bc I don't even know where to start. 10 episodes of some salad finished with one mutilated scene from book 6 for no reason the fact that characters are weird themselves also I can't quite tell, did they really just meet or they imply smth else lmao.. I'm sorry, but I do not get it.
I've given LT2 another try after finishing all the books and I've dropped it half way through, Cheng Yi wasn't even close to how I pictured Xiaoge in any aspect. He in fact didn't do anything OOC or off the book or anything, I just was like "not my Qiling". Happens sometimes.
Explore with the note you already know how I feel about this lol let's just forget.
P.S. To be fair here also maybe we should take into account the fact that some got luckier than other with "at which point" Xiaoge they're playing. Like for example, "Wrath of the Sea" and "Qingling Tree" books which is LT2 is not exactly you can say much about Qiling there, he trolls them there in the beginning (in a brilliant way that was totally lost in the adaptation) and he is there in "Wrath of Sea", but it's not the part that can make his character shine in any way, there's not much things happening there that would make you fall for him or get to know him; Yuliang grabbed the fattest piece bc it's middle several books, when they're always together and his character shines the most in terms of clues about past, opening up to Wu Xie and Pangzi, and there are many many events where you can get the picture of what kind of man he is; Huang Junjie grabbed my fav piece of utter devotion, where he's already fully and wholeheartedly belongs to Wu Xie, that I'm just weak for. So like... there's also that I guess xD.

I got tagged by @xcziel thank you!
Rules: List 10 songs you really like, each by a different artist, and then 10 tag people to do the same.
Sorry this took forever, i really can’t choose favorite songs, usually i just press play on a CD or playlist. I probably listen to most stuff done by the artist of these songs :)
1. PA PA YA by Babymetal - I like all of their stuff, but chose this one because i think the beginning is really nice :)
2. Speed and Danger by Battle Beast - Very cool heavy metal band
3. Staten & Kapitalet by Ebba Grön - I am Swedish and I like punk, Ebba Grön is THE Swedish punk band and this song is a classic :)
4. Det Är Vi Som Bestämmer (Vem Har Lurat Alla Barnen) by Laleh - Continuing on the theme of me being Swedish, but not on the punk theme. I got Laleh’s first CD by my grandpa when i was a little kid and later got the second one myself when it came. I listened to them 24/7 and recently picked them up from my mom’s house. They are still awesome :)
5. Dragon’s Dream by Burning Witches - I went to a CD shop looking for Battle Beast, didn’t find them, but found Burning witches instead and I am very happy I did. Love them :)
6. Racist, Sexist Boy by The Linda Lindas - Angry teenage girls, what punk is all about
7. 探险家 by 宇宁 - I loved him in Ultimate note. A post with some of his more “rock” songs came up on my dash, I love them all but this one is the best :)
8. Ten Years Rebellion by SMZB - Chinese punk. This one is in English however.
9. 铁三角 by 朱一龙, 陈明昊, and 黄俊捷 - Reboot’s iron triangle song, love it. Is it because Huang Junjie sings one line and you can hear how hard he tried? maybe. Regardless, he is doing amazing. The other as well but yeah
10. 可不可以 by 刘畅 - This was the hardest one, I love all his songs haha. but this one is neat and the newest one in my collection :)
And for tagging I am late as always, so unsure of who has done this one, but eeh maybe @psychic-waffles @hesayshesgotboyfriend @strawberrysehunnie @hils79 @kholran @alxina @smaragdine-galaxy @wingyen
Of course no pressure :)

So, last night @mejomonster (D: WHO I CAN’T @ FOR SOME REASON?? WHYYYYY.) put out a call to “rank your favorite DMBJ dramas” and tagged me in it, and then @jockvillagersonly tagged me in their rankings because @foxofninetales and I were talking about how squishy TLT1 Wu Xie is and I think that’s a sign that I should do it, too?
...though this is going to be a very, VERY short list because I’ve literally only seen... AHAHAHA NOT EVEN ONE WHOLE ADAPTATION, OMG I’M A FRAUD.  OTZ
Before I say anything else, though, let me preface this by saying that no other version of TLT is ever going to replace Reboot for me.  I imprint HARD on the first versions of characters I see in a visual medium and it almost NEVER happens that a secondary version will ever supersede them.  Possibly the ONLY time I can think of that a secondary version came even CLOSE to replacing (or at least equaling) my first version love was when Paris and Steel took over from Gavin and Will playing Claude and Berger in Hair... and that is LITERALLY the only example I can think of.  XD  So, Reboot was my introduction to DMBJ and they will forever and always be my favorite, because 43 years worth of track record has taught me that about myself, so I’ve just learned to run with it.  ;D
My Rankings:
The Lost Tomb Reboot | DMBJ Chongqi | Reunion: Sound of the Providence
The Lost Tomb 1 | DMBJ
The fan translation of DMBJ Chongqi by merebear
The official translations of the novels
...I warned you it was a short list?  XD
Details behind the cut...
(And at this point, I think everyone I know in this fandom has already been tagged to do this?  So, if you haven’t done it and want to, please feel free!)
(Note: Any “uncredited“ gifs are my own.  ^_~  Please don’t repost.)
1. The Lost Tomb Reboot | DMBJ Chongqi | Reunion: Sound of the Providence
Tumblr media
I’m not ashamed to admit that the reason I got into this franchise in the first place was because of this no-longer-so-tiny Zhu Yilong obsession I’ve been nursing since watching Guardian just a smidge more than exactly a year ago.  I fell for his Wu Xie HOOK, LINE, AND SINKER.  I love that he’s older and more experienced and more knowledgeable and still super ornery when someone gets up in his face but how, at the same time, he’s a bit existentially weary.  Maybe he misses Xiao-ge.  Maybe his experiences have worn him down.  Maybe it’s just the late 30s (according to the show canon)/early 40s (according to the actual canon timeline) ennui settling in.  Maybe it’s because of **spoiler** that he finds out within the first two episodes of the series.  I don’t know.  But being in my early 40s myself, I imprinted on him HARD and never looked back.  XD
And then I met Chen Minghao’s Pangzi and fell JUST AS MUCH IN LOVE, OMG, I LOVE HIS PANGZI SO FUCKING MUCH.  But MORE than that (and I mentioned this on the tags of another post and I have an entire meta post brewing on this that I WILL post eventually @foxofninetales, I promise), I LOVE the depth of his relationship with Wu Xie.  Like, that IS the definition of a queerplatonic relationship RIGHT THERE.  I love how close they are.  I love that they share living space and move around each other in that space like a pair of long-partnered dancers.  I love how much they care about each other and how it isn’t sexual or romantic in the SLIGHTEST, but that the same exact depth of feeling is there that there would be in a married couple celebrating a 30th wedding anniversary.  Perhaps even more.  And that means SO fucking much to me, I can’t even express it properly.  And omg, he’s just SUCH A GOOD, and he loves his friends SO MUCH, and all he wants to do is take care of them and cook for them and BE THERE FOR THEM and MAKE THEM SMILE AND I HAVE A LOT OF FEELS ABOUT CHEN MINGHAO’S PANGZI OK?  OK.
And then there’s Huang Junjie’s Xiao-ge.  I LOVE HIM.  I love that while he’s very self-contained, at the same time there’s a softening about the edges of him that long exposure to Wu Xie and Pangzi has given him.  I love that you can see his sense of humor peaking in around the edges sometimes and how his expressions reflect that.  Like that soft, wry smile he gives Pangzi after he’s been convinced to take off his shirt and let tattoo lady (who’s name I forget D: OOPS) see his tattoo.  And I LOVE how tender he is with Wu Xie and how careful Wu Xie is with him in return, and how he lets Pangzi run roughshod all the hell over his physical boundaries because he knows that’s just how Pangzi IS and he trusts him completely and I just have A LOT OF FEELS ABOUT THIS IRON TRIANGLE OK?  A LOT OF THEM. TT^TT
And then there’s Ershu.
Tumblr media
What can I POSSIBLY say about Ershu?  Other than that I love this version of him so much I ACHE with it.  Maybe it’s because I have no distinguished elder gays in my life and I wish I had one like him.  Maybe it’s because I’m so glad that Wu Xie DOES have him because so many people our age DON’T.  Maybe it’s because he’s the mold that Wu Xie is going to grow into and you do NOT fuck with him because he will WRECK YOU.  Maybe it’s because as good and as brilliant and as dangerous as Wu Xie can be, Ershu can still pin him down with a proverbial paw to the back of the neck like an unruly kitten and put him in his place without breaking a sweat, and I LOVE THAT.  Whatever it is, I just... I adore Ershu?  I did not expect him to be one of my favorite character takeaways from this show, but he VERY much is and there we are.  ^_^
Xiao Bai and the ducklings!!  Xiao Bai and the ducklings!!
Tumblr media
WHO ALL LIVE HAPPILY EVER AFTER.  AND XIAO BAI GETS A GIRLFRIEND.  AND JIA KEZI AND LI JIALE MOVE IN TOGETHER AND ALSO LIVE HAPPILY EVER AFTER.  THEY’RE ADORABLE AND I LOVE THEM.
AND AAAAAAAAAAH.  HUO DAOFU HUO DAOFU  HUO DAOFU.
Tumblr media
I REALLY HAVE TO STOP, BECAUSE THIS IS GETTING WAY TOO LONG ALREADY, BUT I HAVE A CHARACTER TYPE AND HE AND WU XIE ARE AT EITHER ENDS OF ITS SPECTRUM AND HE IS SUCH A PRICKLY LITTLE BITCH AND I LOVE HIM.  *coughs*  I’m... I’m going to stop now.  XD
(Except to say that I actually haven’t watched the last 10 or so episodes because I’m hovering in this weird place where like... “if I don’t finish watching it, then it’s never over,” but I’m currently doing rewatches with a couple of friends, so at SOME POINT, I’ll get to those last episodes.  But... I’m letting myself take my time.  XD)
2. The Lost Tomb 1 | Dao Mu Bi Ji
So... this is the only other drama adaptation I’ve seen any of other than Reboot.  And I literally just starting watching it a few days ago.  XD  I almost didn’t get past the first episode, though, because I just couldn’t deal with Xiao-ge’s emo phase.  I CAN’T TAKE HIM SERIOUSLY, I JUST CAN’T.  OTZ  But after some encouragement, I did keep watching and HORRIBLY OVERDRAMATIC SLO-MO EFFECTS WITH SCARY MUSIC ON THINGS THAT END UP NOT-IN-FACT-DANGEROUS ASIDE (seriously though, what the FUCK is that even about? XD), I do have to say I’m enjoying it.  I’ve read the first couple of novels, and I’m having fun playing “spot the plot line/scene/character I recognize,” which is not an experience I’ve had with a c-drama before, so that’s a lot of fun.  ;D
And as has been said before, including by me, TLT 1′s Wu Xie is VERY BABY.  He’s an earnest kid who just wants to Do The Right Thing which is... kind of in line with who he is in the early novels, but without the arrogant, obnoxious brat tendencies that drive me so nuts in the books.  So, I kind of adore him.  And I adore how he has such a BIG, GIANT CRUSH on Xiao-ge from minute fucking ONE and how Xiao-ge falls for him just as quickly and just kind of shrugs like “Whelp.   ¯\_(ツ)_/¯  Guess this is my life now,” and accepts “Chief Caretaker and Snuggler of One (1) Precious Wu BB” as his new most important life aspiration and gets the fuck on with it.  XD
Tumblr media
I also kind of love this Pangzi, but I can’t quite figure out what his deal is yet.  And... not his fault, it’s the writing, but I could have done without the blatant misogyny and rape jokes.  You, uh... have a ways to go to recoup from that one Pangzi.  OTZ
I DID enjoy finally getting to properly meet Pan Zi and A-Ning, though, and look forward to meeting them again in other series until we lose them.  ^_^
3. The fan translation of DMBJ Chongqi by merebear
If you have not heard about this yet, Merebear has taken on the TREMENDOUS undertaking of translating all the novels and sequels and prequels and side stories of DMBJ.  They have a lot of it done, too!  And I started reading my way through the Chongqi translation (all... 961 pages of it), and I’m really enjoying it so far.  The translation is really well done, and I can already see how parts of the plot were changed from what we got on screen, and how this Wu Xie is clearly the Reboot version that the arrogant and obnoxious bb!Wu Xie from the novels would grow up into, as opposed to the one the earnest and soft bb!Wu Xie from the dramas grew up into.  But, like I said, I’m really enjoying it and enjoying playing spot the differences, and the translation, dare I say, is actually... much better than the official translations of the first few novels?  FANS GET THE JOB DONE.  ;D
So, yeah, I highly recommend their translations if you’re interested in reading the novels, but also, you know... support the official translations if you can, because maybe that will encourage American publishers to bring over more official translations of c-novels.  ^_^
4. The official translations of the novels
I... will admit that these are a bit of a slog.  *sigh*  I don’t know if it’s the translation or if it’s the fact that I constantly want to drop-kick this Wu Xie out the window because he is such an arrogant little shit who constantly makes himself out to be more knowledgeable and capable than he actually is and then gets himself (...and often other people) in trouble as a result, but if this had been my introduction to the franchise, I never would have gotten through Book 1.  One of these days I’m going to hop over to merebear’s translations of the first few books and see if they read any better, but atm, I’m more interested in reading Chongqi, so.  *shrug*  But yeah, I’m pushing through and reading them mostly so I can say that I did.  Which isn’t the best reason to read anything, but eh.  They’re an easy read, at least.  And honestly?  When my nephew gets a little older, I might try to get him into them, because i think they’d be right up his alley, and he has a bit of that “I know everything, even when I don’t” attitude in him, too, and maybe this can serve double-duty as a cautionary tale.  XD
AND THAT’S ALL I’VE GOT GUYS, SORRY.  I WARNED YOU IT WAS A SHORT LIST.  XD  To everyone asking me what I think of the Ultimate Note Pingxie or the Sha Hai versions of characters or anyone else... I have no doubt I will get there eventually.  Now that I’ve caved and started watching non-Reboot versions, it probably won’t even take that long.  ;D

[SPOILERS KIND OF] TLTR2 - Thoughts on the last 10 episodes + EVERYTHING
Ahhhhh the found family trope gets me every single damn time!!! Honestly Zhu Yilong’s TLTR is the best I’ve seen!
Okay first things first, TLTR as a whole was EXCELLENT in terms of characters, script, twists, SETS (wow damn TLTR creeps me out episode after episode) and the whole premise seems a little far-fetched but actually melds together really well. Pacing could be slightly better (HAHAHAHA like Wu Xie was stuck in Warehouse 11 on his own like FOREVER in the first half) but they remedied that with S2, the pacing was spot on and I was literally jumping on my feet EVERY WEEK. Reunions? Check. Xiao Ge badass catwalk from the shadows every time Wu Xie is in danger? Check. TEAM BONDING WITH LIU SANG WHUMP?! CHECK. HAPPY ENDING?!!! CHECK (could have done with an alive Jia Ke Zi to be honest, but we’ll take what we can get).
And one thing TLTR does really, really well is like touching, reminiscing scenes? Even with Er Jing?!!! And of course everytime Pang Zi and everyone else thinks Wu Xie is dying, and when Wu Xie himself thinks he’s literally going to die the next moment, wow the script is amazing?!!! I cried (okay but I admit that I cry really easily) soooo many times?!
On Er Jing - The Mole
The moment when Wu Xie recalls Er Jing saving him when he was younger, and how much he trusted Er Jing, and I do feel so sad for both Er Jing and Wu Xie? Like I don’t believe each moment for Er Jing was spent like scheming and tbf he’s not that good of a schemer, ISTG his greed and glee shows up EVERY SINGLE TIME the second he steps into warehouse 11 and Pang Zi is right, “It’s so obvious it’s Er Jing please.” Wu Xie says it as well - if Er Jing truly was a scheming little bij, he would have been seen throughout the 20 years?! So Er Jing perhaps through the years, did think about Er Shu and Wu Xie as his family, I do believe that. It’s just sad af that he chose treasure that he never saw over riches with Er Shu ya know?!
Not sure if Er Jing and his band of crazy friends are dead or alive? Seems at the last episode Wu Xie asked to send doctors down to treat them, but I guess...
On Liu Sang
In the book apparently Er Jing isn’t the mole but Liu Sang (in a different setting, not the same situation if I recall correctly), but San Shu admits that he was drunk or smth when he was writing the ending and Liu Sang and Xiao Bai ‘disappeared’ LOLOL but San Shu has been supportive always in Liu Sang’s character, so I am soooooo glad my Liu Sang BB is pure, innocent, sometimes scheming, always whump?!! AHHHHH LIU SANG!!!!!
Liu Chang as Liu Sang is fricking amazing damn I LOVE HIS LOOK? Honestly, Liu Chang is my new obsession, I love this man. I really, really do. I love his hair, I love him with glasses, anything tbh.
And he’s so protective of Xiao Bai?!!! LIKE LEGIT GENTLEMAN?!!! The first time when he tried to save Xiao Bai from Boss Jiao’s people in the cave, and then in the last ep, when the black thingys came flying over, he shielded her with his coat?!!! Not that it would have made a difference but damn, my pure, competent bb Liu Sang.
Also Liu Sang still DOES NOT GET HIS HUG FROM XIAO GE ISTG?!!! XIAO GE HUGS EVERYONE BUT HIM. DAMN. I REST MY CASE.
On IRON TRIANGLE + 4th sister Xiao Bai
Wu Xie is amazing. ZYL is damn frickin amazing too, and Chen Minghao as Pang Zi IS GOLD. HE’S SO DRAMATIC ASS?!!! And young Huang Junjie as Xiao Ge, damn. This is the best trio I’ve ever seen. This is the best trio you need. All the brotherhood shit, all the meaningful stares between Xiao Ge and Wu Xie, COME ON!!!!
And also Pang Zi taking care of Xiao Mei?!!! And Xiao Mei calling him dad?!!! I love it. AHAHAHAHA
Xiao Bai, I don’t even know where to begin. I think it’s cute, her and Wu Xie, and when Wu Xie called her and she didn’t pick up and in the last ep when Xiao Bai left him behind to run towards Pang Zi and the rest and Wu Xie’s AFFRONTED LOOK, I think he’s fond of her somewhat too. Although to what degree, in what sense, well... I just think it’s cute (ALSO DID YOU GUYS KNOW THAT MAO XIAOTONG WHO PLAYS XIAO BAI IS THE SAME AGE AS ZHU YILONG?!!! LET THAT FARKING SINK IN. THEY ARE BOTH 32 YEARS OLD OKAY?!!)
Hei Yang Jing, Huo Dao Fu, Li Jia Le, Kan Jian, Xiao Hua
AHAHAHAHA I just wanna laugh at these few - LJL especially was so mean in Warehouse 11 but the moment S2 starts he’s just a cute, clumsy bun bun who keeps getting KO-ed, glad he’s alive tho!!! Kan Jian too, so skinny and crying all the damn time, who loves his boss so much, he’s the cutest. I see a lot of fics shipping Kan Jian and Liu Sang, and tbh, in S1 I did see it quite a bit.
Hei Yan Jing and Chu Chu is frickin alive?!! Damn Xiao Hua, I knew you would have done something. Honestly, if you have so much damn money, and you let Chu Chu go without a fight after warning her that you take HYJ’s request to keep her safe seriously?!!! DAMN THE REVEAL IN THE LAST EP. Hope they meet. Baron Chen is... gosh, I love this man. Also Baron Chen and Huang Junjie were in The Pillow Book tgt and oooooof I love it I love it.
And all of you know just how much I love YOUTIAO DOC?!!! He was such a major side character in the second half of like S2 and I am all for it. His sass, his eye rolls, the way he takes care of Wu Xie and does things for him even tho he grumbles about it?!!! Damn. I need a friend like that.
On Er Shu
Honestly Er Shu was the mastermind in the novel? If I recall, it was his plan basically to get Wu Xie to go to Thunder City to get himself cured, because Wu Xie would not have done it otherwise. In fact, everyone except Wu Xie knew it was Er Shu’s plan to get him to go and that he schemed it all?!!
And when the reveal happened, everyone was like “yeah we knew it was him and that we’re all part of his plan but we didn’t say anything” because no one knew which roles they were playing in Er Shu’s plan?! And then yeah Liu Sang turned out to be a mole but I didn’t manage to see why, but he was kind of a morally ambivalent character? And Wu Xie in the novel at one point said that he believes in the kind of person Liu Sang is and that he’s not all that bad after the reveal, so... anyway, ER SHU WAS MEANT TO BE MORE BADASS THAN THIS?!!!
I’m so sad he was really paralysed ;-; I legit thought when he stood up in Ep 29 it was really him and I freaked out but it was HYJ CRIESSSS
--
Overall this was definitely a drama of friendship? Forged over creepy tombs that were a mix of Frankenstein, The Mummy Returns, Aliens vs Predator and Indiana Jones?!!! FRIENDSHIP!!!! At the end of it all, Wu Xie found so many new friends that are definitely going to come running the next time they have to find another tomb?
Like I was sad Liu Sang didn’t turn up in the last scene but he’s alive thank god, and you can imagine that the next time they need help, Liu Sang will roll his eyes but turn up?!!! And LJL also maybe?! And HDF, everyone!!!!
One thing I wanna know is what the hell is going to happen to the Wu family business?!!! Wu Xie looks like he not going to deal with the power shit, argh IDK he’s back to hobo-ing with his bros which I guess is best life.
EVERYTHING WOULD HAVE BEEN GREAT IF ER JING WASN’T A MOLE ARGH I’M SO MAD. AND IF JIA KE ZI DIDN’T DIE?!!
I’D WATCH THIS WHOLE DAMN THING AGAIN. 10/10 FOR BROMANCE, FRIENDSHIP, FAMILY AND CREEPY ASS TOMBS.

thank you once again @yibobibo for tagging me ♥ even if, like I said, this is pure torture. I have so many sons that I’ve given up on counting them sigh but here goes.
favourite male fictional characters.
I took it that this meant ten so am going with that (tho am not gonna try and put them into order). am also sticking to all the characters I loved this year. and gonna ramble and add gifs so cutting it here.
1. Liu Sang
The Lost Tomb Reboot/Reunion: The Sound of The Providence
Tumblr media
I have so much love for this boy it’s not even healthy. it’s a bit funny tho bc once I started tltr, I didn’t really like him and almost forgot about him as the first season ended. he just felt so annoying and bitter in what I saw him, even if I did get that he had a Tragic BackstoryTM (I felt for him but well. tltr really made him hard to like at first). but then they brought him back in the second season with his sad puppy eyes and inability to handle his thoughts on wu xie and being all touch-starved and pitiful and whatnot and baam, I had the adoption papers ready. he’s wonderful and so strong and so smart and amazing. and liu chang as his actor has been wonderful (and he’s so pretty my god, have you seen him??)
2. Shen Wei
Guardian
Tumblr media
never did I expect to just. fall into this hole after a year? I remember what a mess I was when I first watched guardian over a year ago, right after finishing the untamed. I was in shambles even as I knew how it would end. and now I’ve done this all again while also reading the novel and. my love for shen wei, especially bc it’s zhu yilong acting as shen wei? astronomical. I want to write poetry about him and his stupid responsibilities that he chooses to carry silently and his devotion to zhao yunlan and his love for his ppl and his didi and. I hope that one day I manage to write weilan bc I have this one idea and you can come pry it from my cold, dead fingers if it doesn’t get out there (am also super happy about the edit I made bc my god does he deserve at least that)
3. Cloud Strife
Final Fantasy VII
Tumblr media
ok so stepping into the video games territory now. I was waiting for the remake like crazy and it was everything to me once the quarantine hit during spring. the game is so beautiful and I felt like I looked at this gorgeous boy once and was ready to give him my heart (tbh am quite sure he owned my heart before I even learned to know him). he is tragic in so many ways (I’ve only scratched the surface of all of his pain I know) and I wish I could just. hug him a lot. he is kind and cares very deeply even if he hates to show it and I love it how remake showed him also just being a human disaster (some of his scenes are just. peak comedy). I would kill for his smile (I have already cried for it a dozen)
4. Geralt of Rivia
The Witcher (The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt)
Tumblr media
if there’s one grumpy, brickwall of a man I love, it’s geralt. I affectionately call him “papa wolf” while playing witcher 3 and his voice in it does things to me (I am just so fond of him ok, begone you dirty fuckers). I got introduced to him through the books and adored him in them bc he is so prickly and sarcastic and still so full of love even if he will never admit to it. he is the father figure I wish I could have in real life. (and yes, I’ve seen the tv series (or at least a couple of the first episodes) and it looks stunning but. this is my version of geralt and that’s the hill I will die on)
5. Xiaoge
Zhang Qiling, Daomu Biji (The Lost Tomb 2)
Tumblr media
(wow finding a gif for him was a pain, apparently I gotta learn how to gif or?) ah, my dear boy who I’ve ended up just calling xiaoge bc he seems to prefer it over his real name/title/whatever zhang qiling really is. I got introduced to him through tltr where we really didn’t get to know that much about him bc he was just... there. huang junjie was absolutely stunning tho and his soft smiles made me super fond, but only in the lost tomb 2 did I really fall in love with xiaoge as a character. I was surprised tbh bc I didn’t expect it to be this drama? I had so many doubts about the cast in tlt2 but they all delivered! and I think cheng yi’s xiaoge is now my favorite bc he somehow captured that softness and the pain of him? (and we do not talk about that buxun storyline tyvm) tho now that ultimate note is on the way, I gotta say that xiao yuliang does a wonderful job as xiaoge too!
6. Wu Xie
Daomu Biji (Ultimate Note)
Tumblr media
(sorry we have to go with a pingxie gif now but maybe it’s only fitting) tbh it’s hard to choose my favorite version of wu xie. I think all of the actors for him have done amazing job showing wu xie in different parts of his life (all of them are very distinct but still feel like the same person) but currently zheng shunxi takes the lead. I really wanted to put the reboot version of him here (bc I love that mature, relaxed and somehow very soft version of him and the angst is phenomenal and the thoughts he has about death... yeah) but I already have zhu yilong’s face here once so :’D wu xie is just one of those characters you cannot not like. he is so strong, so kind, so stubborn, so wonderfully stupid sometimes and in need of careful protection. I also adore it how smart he is and I could listen to him spew history facts for 10 hours straight (even if it was in a tomb full of blood zombies) ♥
7. Jiang Cheng
Jiang Wanyin, The Untamed
Tumblr media
my darling boy! my beautiful angry grape! I love him beyond words. I love him in all of his raging, misunderstood, stupid, sassy, constipated, abused, tragic, bitter, big hearted glory. I could write novels about him (and I did and am still writing oh boy) and his love for ppl and his inability to show that love and his loneliness and his issues. I could also write another novel for all of his outfits etc. bc damn, what a fashion king. he is just so great. he owns my soul. he deserves happiness and in this essay I will
8. Isana Yashiro
Adolf K. Weismann, K Project
Tumblr media
I rewatched k project this spring bc a) it’s one of my favorite animes ever (it just looks stunning with all the colors) and b) I love yashiro to bits. I remember falling in love with him when I first watched k project many years ago bc he was just so kind and bright. this time though, I ended up seeing another side of him and my god did I cry. he is... so sweet. he cares for others so deeply and is ready to sacrifice so much for them and his love for his two clansmen... yeah. I think I finally saw the tragedy of him too, all the pain and loneliness and insecurity he decides to hide behind his smile and obnoxious personality. he reminded me a lot of myself and watching him made my heart bleed in a good way
9. Qi Tiezui
Ba Ye, The Mystic Nine
Tumblr media
(wow am going to riot for the lack of all the gifs hhh) yes, we’re continuing with the dmbj universe that sucked me in big time this year. the drama of the mystic nine wasn’t probably that earth shattering for me as it somehow got boring more than once but I did love ba ye to bits. he was just... so nice? I got it that he was somehow this “comedic relief” in the drama with all of his funny scenes and ridiculous mannerisms but I could see the brilliance of him. he is warm and smart and kind of a romantic too and he cares for all of his friends so deeply? it was also sweet how protective of him his two zhangs were (does that run in the family? the tendency to imprint into one smart but disastrous man and keep him safe? maybe) and I really hope I knew more about him bc he seemed to have a lot of knowledge and a lot of impact to ppl’s lives (I yelled when they mentioned him in ultimate note, I miss him ;;)
10. Dorian Pavus
Dragon Age Inquisition
Tumblr media
(yes I’ve been replaying DA:I this year, this counts!) another darling boy! my lovely sass master son! I have so much love for him and his story in DA:I. he is my favorite companion (and his romance is my favorite too, probably obvious in the way am currently romancing him for the third time) and he has given me a lot of strength. the way he stands up against his father, how he’s ready to reform his homeland instead of walking away, how he’s so caring for those he sees struggling... it’s very warming and I feel like I’m safe with him. it feels a bit silly to say that but he really is that comfort character I will seek out when I just want to know am doing fine :’) (and I am so excited to see him again in DA4! probably?)
+ 11. Li Cu
Tomb of the Sea
Tumblr media
yes I cheated a bit (with my own rules lol) to fit li cu here. I didn’t really expect to like him or tomb of the sea as much as I did once I started it? I’ve seen leo wu elsewhere before this (battle through the heavens, nirvana in fire) and his face always makes me think about a sad puppy so maybe I just grew fond over li cu instantly bc he was... so hurt? the first episode really slaps you in the face with all of it, showing him being abused, wounded, kidnapped, tortured, used and then just very, very scared and broken. he continues being that throughout the whole drama and I feel like tomb of the sea (or sand sea or sha hai idk) is the darkest and angstiest story in the dmbj universe. I know it deserves to be bc this is a dark time for wu xie but... my darling li cu. I wish him only happiness ;; he was so strong and smart and wonderful in this and it was just so amazing to watch him grow and find his own place in the world just bc he did something himself (even when he got dragged into all of this bc of wu xie) also I support the wu xie adopts li cu -agenda
Honorary mentions:
Zhang Rishan, Xie Yuchen and Hei Xiazi from DMBJ universe. The Twin Jades of Gusu and Ouyang Zizhen from The Untamed. The Iron Bull and Fenris from Dragon Age games. Thane Krios, Kaidan Alenko and Jaal from Mass Effect games. The whole lot of Assassin’s Creed protagonists (especially Ezio Auditore and Shay Cormac). Adam Parrish and Ronan Lynch from The Raven Cycle. Neil Josten from All For The Game. Eduon and March from The Smoke Thieves. Qiling from L.O.R.D. Critical World. Luo Fei from Detective L (played by Bai Yu).
well, with this I can really see that I have a thing for those who are tragic :’D I have a thing for grumpy, prickly and antisocial guys or those who hide their pain behind a smile. maybe it’s bc I am somehow both, even if I can’t show my anger or be mean to others and even if I feel like my smile never sticks either. I just find kinship in all of the characters who are on this list. and I feel like I aspire to be as strong and as kind and as loving despite all the pain I’ve been put through.
thank you, this was so much fun! and sorry I made this so long and so complicated ^^’ but well, there are just way too many male characters I love haha
at the end I want to tag @i-am-just-a-kiddo @ashenwren @kholran @tiesanjiao @lan-xichens @aheartfullofjolllly @manhasetardis and @lzswy ♥ feel free to do this in your own way or not at all! and thank you if you managed to read through my rambling :’D

EPISODE 1
REUNION: THE SOUND OF PROVIDENCE (重启之极海听雷)
(AKA WU XIE WILL BE DYING IN THREE MONTHS TIME AND THIS SHOW HAS ZERO CHILLS ABOUT IT. I AM TOO EMOTIONALLY INVESTED AND THIS IS ONLY EPISODE 1)
It starts off the episode with a flashback (or memory) of kid!Wu Xie in an expedition with his 三叔 (who was an archaeologist) at night. San-shu was explaining the contents of the notebook Wu Xie’s grandfather left him (盜墓笔记). After tucking kid!Wu Xie into bed, he says “男人不怕惧生死,但求死而无憾” and left for the cave he was set to explore. His San-shu’s words stuck with him for a long time, and eventually became the trigger for him to set off in his last adventure before he dies. In a tragic event, the whole expedition team encountered some kind of weird ferocious beast that killed everyone in the team, leaving the outcome for San-shu hanging.
At this point, Wu Xie wakes up and it is understood that what the memory was could be a nightmare. Suddenly, he hears the door knocking and as he peeked through the small door hole, it was revealed to be Pangzi (ZYL rolled his eyes omg it was so cute!!) who brought a customer in the middle of the night. The customer is a businessman, and an earthquake occurred a few days ago which resulted in a large abnormal hole in the warehouse. The workers began hearing human-like sounds from the hole, and suspected to have a tomb under it. Hence, the customer approached Wu Xie for help in return for RMB60,000.
Since Wu Xie is broke, he was persuaded by Pangzi to take up the job which they did. Then there was a long narration on the background of the story in case no one caught up with the prequels (I mean I didn’t so it helped a lot). At this point, the only thought on my mind was Wu Xie’s fake wig which looks gaudy. I get that they are trying to portray him in the beginning as someone 无所事事 for the past 10 years but that wig did ZYL no justice to his beautiful face.
As both Pangzi and Wu Xie traveled down the hole, they found out that the tomb was the resting place for twenty-three musicians. The human-like sound from the hole is actually because there was a change in temperature in the tomb, which led to the sound transmitting from the instruments in the coffins. They also discover that there is a small bowl under each coffin that is hanging from the beams to collect the coffin nectar (residue? I think) so that it does not react with the ground. If it comes in contact with the ground, it will react and produce toxic gas because of chemistry. I’m guessing that’s how they’re trying to get around the whole censorship in China thing that bans supernatural elements in c-dramas. Honestly, it works for me because it’s not overly excessive. It actually makes sense, and does not sound like they’re smoking through the censorship at all.
Wu Xie and Pangzi decide to haul up one of the coffins that was making the noises and also the small bowl that collects the coffin nectar to explain to the customer. Somehow, the crane lifting them up began to malfunction. It was actually good because I thought it was because of the supernatural elements and the Chinese superstition to not mess in coffins in general. They explained that the crane malfunctioned but we all know how it is hehe. Anyways, they managed to get out unscathed. While Pangzi starts off a rant for a higher payment because they almost died, Wu Xie, being the kindred soul he is, just decided to inform everything to the customer, and specifically told him (and the rest of the workers present) to not let the nectar drip out of the bowl.
As the duo were leaving, the workers decided to just do what they were told not to do just mere seconds ago, which led to the nectar spilling all over the ground. Everyone tried to run away and evacuate the warehouse, but Wu Xie, who stopped to help another, got caught in it and fainted.
When he wakes, he finds out that he is in a hospital and the gas was not that toxic after all. However, he did find out he was in the terminal stage of lung cancer, and only has three months left to live. At first, he was a little disillusioned. He couldn’t believe anything; he was about to die. He tells Xiao-Ge (Zhang Qiling, played by Huang Junjie and can I say how cute he is?) but not Pangzi within their Iron Triangle. Coincidentally after a few days, Pangzi discovered Wu Xie’s old phone that was given to him from his San-shu, and that a message was sent to him just a second ago. Wu Xie opens the hidden message up and decrypts it like his San-shu taught him. He finds out that his San-shu may be alive, and is waiting for him to find him. So with his dying wish, he sets off to find out where his uncle really is.
That was a long recap? I should just not do that anymore. Could have just watched the show. Just going onto my thoughts.
This show is interesting to say the least. I really enjoyed ZYL’s acting in just this one episode, and how incredible his acting really is. His character alone, makes me just want to hug him tightly and protect him. He isn’t someone who dwells on the fact that he is going to die in three months, but embraces the fact that he has three months left to live and what he can do in that time to not leave any regrets behind, stemming from the words of his San-shu. And he doesn’t lose any of his personality, but still acts as per normal. I think that’s why I feel more hurt and angst in just this one episode because he pretends everything is fine. Pangzi doesn’t need to know, he just wants to leave without any regrets.
The actor for Pangzi is naturally comical. Every aspect was so well-thought of and I really enjoyed the gimmicks and his character!!
The plot itself is just so full. Even though I’m not one who watched horror and suspense often, I loved the whole discovering the tomb part because of the slight horror element. And also, the light saber thing that the duo did in the tomb? Genius. They’re still kids even though they’re reaching forty in the show😂 help the kids please. Also when they tried to cross the tables using the bodies and the small detail of their backs aching is so funny. The show balances humour, suspense and angst so well in the single episode that I just can’t help but to watch more!! So far? The show is a 10/10!

Episode 8 Part 2
and we’re back with part 2!

yao chi is really out here to make me cry with who whe is as a person fuCK
yao chi if somehow you ever see this, firstly i want to apologize for proposing marriage so many times
secondly, it takes a lot in a person to like,,,comeback from low self esteem and the fact that you want to also make sure that those around you can feel good about themself is such a testament to who you are as a person and what you believe in
thirdly the way that you so freely emote is so valuable to have esp as a guy bc it’s not always encouraged that you show being vulnerable
maybe one of these days i’ll actually write him a letter expressing all of this
or not bc submitting to the mortifying ordeal of being known is disgusting

its nice to see that the one kiddo really opened up when he got the camera
shiyuan is really cute
literally i love the little kid whos taking pictures
honestly part of the reason i havent been really writing much about this part is that it feels kind of like more like you should experience it yourself

1/2 "Explore the fuck was that" Xiaoge is not Xiaoge and talking is not the problem here. It's literally everything thats the problem. Also like you I've also read all the books, but failed to put into words why Xiao Yu Liang's and Huang Jun Jie's Qilings didn't give me any divergence from the original character despite the changes, while others did and pretty drastically. I thought it was a bit irrational on my part, but you just sorted it all out so effortlessly I'm a bit jealous
Tumblr media
Lol I said the exact same thing, the talking and the phone was not a problem as some say, he has a phone in the book too at some point and talks more than you'd actually think, it's just that literally nothing about him is Zhang Qiling. Literally not one vibe or even tiny feeling. I don't know how that happened honestly.
AAAAAAAAA I saw the smile comments too lmao. I was like who's gonna tell them. Not only he smiles, he's full on laughing in the 2nd book already, when Wu Xie is using his spit as a lotion lmao. And Wu Xie was so happy about, he was like "I saw him smile before, but it was always so bitter and cold, this was the first time he smiled genuinely, he just needs to spend more time with him, we'll get him there" T_T Before that his smiling was legit a bit scary tho, sometimes brash, like when he told him about the stairs and he went "oh really?" haha
I thought about it and I honestly have no idea about the reference point for some people. I think maybe they go from that first adaptation? Maybe they think it's how he is in the book? Idk. It just weirds me out that I feel like some created some their own picture in their head and then judge everything from there throwing "thats ooc" left and right. Like this "Xiao Ge doesn't smile thing". Maybe it's because of the "Poker-face" thing, but do they know that "Men You Ping" doesn't actually mean that, it was just the closest thing you could come up with with english alternative to keep the nickname short (like I doubt it would read well if he kept calling him a bottle xD). Like according to Wu Xie since the very first book, his hubby can't even lie, so he's definitely not a poker face at all. He also gets pissed pretty easily and he likes to fool around sometimes too (like troll Wu Xie and Fatty obviously).
He's also not emo and not the "mysterious hero from some romance", not a stone and not a zooty. I don't know where this all came from tbh.
I can really debate 24/7 about this, but they're 100% Qilings, just slightly changed and softened accordingly to what they'd be like at this point of their relationship, if he did write it in (and I'm like pretty sure I'm right about this). It's the way they behave, how they act in certain situations, how they're with Wu Xie, how they're with other people, the right amount of sass and being done with everything, just the overall picture, the "you're an idiot, but you're my whole world". But also you know, that strange feeling that Wu Xie describes, like "when he's there, everything is suddenly alright" lol (just the magical safety vibe esp in SOP). I literally don't know how ppl who read the whole thing watched them and thought "thats not right". It's the fucking overall feeling of.. yes, i'm watching Zhang Qiling.
Just change the book's impending doom of tragical "you're my whole world, but I can't stay and there's no way for this to work" to "we actually have a future and I want to stay in our home with you" and that's basically Yuliang's and Junjie's versions (one on the way, one fully there by the end). But even if for some reason you can't accept this, I still don't get how some could hate it, cause overall they still have basically everything they need. Unlike others who are way off in my opinion, bc of the weird templates they are.
And about "Explore the fuck was that" (lol I'm gonna use this title from now on) seriously, no offense to this creation and everyone who liked it (no judging here for real, everyone likes what they like), I'm not gonna heavily diss anyone or anything, I don't really care for the thing, just telling the truth. No one who's participated in this thing have a fucking idea about the characters they're playing or writing about.
I mean, as a fan many things that were adapted from books, I already do not care for minor divergence or even bigger once, if it makes sense and you see the care and understanding of the characters, but sadly here it felt like no one cared. Like for example honestly if someone asked me what would you choose "watching wu xie and xiao ge but not 100% sticking to the plot" or "loosely watching the plot, but it's not wu xie and xiao ge", I'm gonna pick the first option.
And some will say that's it's only the writers/directors mistakes for not explaining or guiding actors etc, but to be honest it's not completely true, bc as we know many actors if they really care before taking on the role actually try to do a research about the character and read the material to understand what they're playing. Especially if it's such iconic characters of a franchise Сhina's been going crazy over for like a decade.
Like how the hell happened that Zhu Yilong for example while playing embodied all the Wu Xie's traits througout the whole book series from behaving exactly like young Wu Xie did in certain needed parts to going to the cold, strategic and rational old self in others, I mean, they could've just go with the "Restart" one, where not much happens and he could've played just that. But literally each time he did something, I was like "yeah, that's my boo". And that wasn't the part of this exact book, it was part of Wu Xie. Like the way he behaved, acted in some previous situations that you know its him. That's happening only when the actor knows who he's portraying.
Or Yuliang knowing and loving and feeling the character he plays, because he wanted to know and cared.
It's just strange to me, bc if they're not making it for the fans, then for whom do they even make it? For themselves? It's really stupid no matter how you look at it. Like your success depends on it, so what's the point in sinking your own ship I will never get.
I also do not get how could they just fail literally everything. Like casting was a miss already, but good acting and chemistry and putting character's soul in it could've make it great still, but they have literally none of anything, it's just fascinating to me. I just don't think I ever seen something like that, it's kinda funny.
But this is like once again just my opinion. Like everyone is free to think what they think, but maybe just stop yelling "OOC" without knowing the original character, cause maybe it's not really OOC. Like book Xiao Ge is not exactly what many ppl claim him to be really.

honestly you're one of the rare ones who didn't lie about reading the dmbj og books bc after seeing some ppls tweets there are way too much of 'its bc i've read the book i hate it' and then they proceed to describe the thing they hated that was in the book and i just start laughing. anyways same about the 'restart'. like hell i'd exchange what zu yilong and huang junjie did for what was happening in there and it all ending with wu xie rapidly aging and going bald no thank you
I just think that this is the kind of a rare fandom, where whether you are a fan of the books or not, it doesn't matter unless you're making sense and consistent with what you're saying, bc the novels are a hot mess tbh. Like even if you're a huge fan of the books for some reason, there had to be places where u were like "well that was... strange" lol
So like it weirds me out when ppl keep agressively yelling ooc and he'd never do that, if that's what he did in the novel. you mean like "ooc compared to what this character is in your head?" but thats not ooc lmao
For me it's just the overall feeling I guess, like if I'm watching and it feels right or it feels.. well, not. Chemistry plays a huge role too.
Like the only Qilings I love are Yuliang & Junjie, but whoever came up with the "Yuliang is the closest to the book Qiling version" is hella wrong and lying, you can check it yourself. But I can't consider the fact that they're so much softer and more gone on Wu Xie as a flaw, although some aparently do xD
Same as I personally can't accept the Wu Xie's "don't worry about him" line in the new one, but know for sure that there was tons of moments in the books like and I quote here Wu Xie literally going "knowing how skilled Xiao Ge was I wasn't worried about him at all, so I just watched him as he ran, distracting the creature". Like I'd rather have SOP version of Wu Xie being hella scared even when XiaoGe just jumps down stuff and running to check on him first out of everyone else after bomb explodes. But thats not whats happening in the novels, so it's technically ooc haha
Those who read also know that like "I'll notice if you disappear" 'I'm a man with no past and no future' scene in UN that was done so touchingly and romantically.. well, to say that it didn't carry as much emotion in the book is to say nothing lol. It just wasn't the vibe UN went with.
And why would I even want the Reboot book reunion going "why are u here?" of nothingness, if I can have what these idiots did with their heart eyes and "you're here, I'm okay now" and everything?
I mean, if you want the book version, fine by me, but like blaming people who wanted by novel #...12orsmth for them to pass some stages and get the warmth we got in UN and SOP is insane.
I mean, just the fact that in the Restart book Wu Xie had an internal thought that next time they see each other they might not even know how to behave with each other and that for him he's just a random person he passes by in his long life just almost made me close the damn thing lolz
yeah, about him basically dying at the end.. also no thanks. stupid me prefers them living together and Qiling hating Wu Xie being hungry birdy and going to buy him food xD
"going bald" lmaaaaaao it said it'll grow back its ok
Tumblr media
I honestly considered myself an extra Xiao Ge fan, until I saw some ppl's reviews and opinions and thought "omg lmao some just go straight overboard with everything", esp considering canon.
I was straight up laughing at that one comment "all he does in this part is looking lovingly at Wu Xie and protects him". I was like damn, so many of my faves are cancelled like that... I mean, you're watching HOB anime and like "my god it's such a bad representation of the Hua Cheng character, all he does is stares at Xie Lian and protects him" lol (I'm sorry but this 11 episodes are NOT the part of the book that tells his story and who he is, but this in fact doesn't mean that they "reduced him to a tool" lmao). Meanwhile some DMBJ books Wu Xie goes "I knew he was hired by the 2nd uncle just to keep us safe". LMAO SO WHAT? this is not making him a tool, that's just what he does, it doesn't make his FULL CHARACTER, just bc he does that.
Like seriously, it sounds as insane as someone splitting MDZS in 3 parts, watching the last one, then the first one and saying like "you know in the last part all that LZ does is stares lovingly at WWX and protects him, he was much more complex and flawed in part 1". Like wth lol... ITS THE SAME FUCKING CHARACTER.
Also I saw one UN review that was positive, but just went that Xiao Ge in that part felt more like humane or smth, bc "at some point he even grew a scruff". I was just sitting there like... out of all the things in this series that made him humane, why mention the scruff? Like since when it's a thing...? I mean just bc Shen Wei or Lan Zhan look perfect all the time that somehow means they don't have feelings or less human beings? I do not get.
So all these tantrums of "ISTG IF THEY EVER SHOW QILING JUST PROTECTING THEM... I'M GONNA BLEW UP" and the same one saying that they're the book fans, I'm like "how didn't u blow up during several books already?" lolz
I like love reading so many different opinions, when it comes to this fandom, bc it's so fascinating, but some arguments just don't go together well haha
And I'm a huge fan of UN, but like.. some go a bit TOO extra about it and their arguments just don't stick sometimes, bc they're trying again with the "it's the less-est ooc from books", but it wasn't as much it, as the fact that it just had soul in it, which sometimes in my opinion actually completely lacked in the og novels.
Anyways, as an extra Qiling's fan myself, I can tell that some are going waaay overboard with stuff.
