You know, when I see fictional characters who repress all their emotions, they're usually aloof and very blunt about keeping people at a distance, sometimes to an edgy degree—but what I don't see nearly enough are the emotionally repressed characters who are just…mellow.
Think about it. In real life, the person that's bottling up all their emotions is not the one that's brooding in the corner and snaps at you for trying to befriend them. More often than not, it's that friendly person in your circle who makes easy conversation with you, laughs with you, and listens and gives advice whenever you're upset. But you never see them upset, in fact they seem to have endless patience for you and everything around them—and so you call them their friend, you trust them. And only after months of telling them all your secrets do you realize…
…they've never actually told you anything about themselves.

You met Charlie in your freshman year of high school, and finally, by your senior year, you were dating. Now, at twenty-five, you were happy with your lives and peacefully living. He was a full-time content creator, and you were working at a department store, just a job to pay for classes to get the degree you were hoping to get.
You'd appeared in a stream or video here and there. You were relatively camera shy and didn't like disturbing your boyfriend while he was working, so you didn't show your face to his fans very much other than Instagram posts.
But, he'd gotten the genius idea to invite you on his stream and teach you how to play Minecraft. You knew stuff here and there about the game, but not a lot. All you really knew was blocks and the insane amount of friends he had, and eggs.
You sit down in a chair next to him, picking at your fingers as he begins the stream, giving you a warm welcome for chat. You give the camera a wave, looking to Charlie as he explains why you're here and what you'll be doing.
"Okay, so WASD is to move, mouse is to look around"
"Okay" You nod, using the mouse to look around, seeing you'd spawned in a dark oak biome. "Oooo, I like this place. Wait, this is one of those biomes you were playing in VR with Traves and Schlatt"
He nods and chuckles, "Yeah, yeah. Hold down the left mouse button to break blocks and get some wood."
You nod, doing as he says, gathering the dark oak wood. "I'm guessing walking, talking egg children are QSMP only" You joke, taking notice of the lack of eggs.
"Honestly, there is two types of eggs but they don't walk or talk, if that's any better?"
"Two?"
"Chicken eggs and the Ender Dragon's egg"
"Oh!"
You progress through the game a bit, getting better as you play.
You're now wielded with iron tools, golden boots from a nether portal ruin, and an iron helmet. Charlie speaks about the nether, which got you in a bit of a panic since, yes, you wanted to try and beat the game, but you didn't want to die and lose all your items, either. You definitely weren't loaded enough to go try and get a bunch of blaze rods and trade for ender pearls, so you decided to explore the massive caves to try and find diamonds and more iron, for now.
Charlie watches you, proudly. He shows you all the tips and tricks and teaches you what items do, how they work, and how to craft them.
"Oh, get out! Get out! That's a warden cave, out! Go! Go, go!" He exclaims, eyes widening.
"What?" You ask, quickly backing up as you look at the torch light illuminating the dark blue blocks. You hear a rustling sound in the headphones and quickly panic, running back where you came from.
"Wardens are so OP, dude, you'll get demolished. The abandoned cities have awesome gear and loot, though"
"Then let's go get it!"
"The wardens, Y/n"
You slowly look between him and the screen, and quickly type a little /gamemode peaceful in chat, switching the game mode.
"Y/n!" He giggles, "I thought you didn't wanna cheat"
"Well, I want rare shit. Thank your chat, dude." You shrug with a smile, heading back down towards the abandoned city.
You end up finding nearly a stack of diamonds down there, plus a bunch of enchanting books and music discs. Charlie was hyping you up the whole time and deflecting the fact you were in peaceful, using the responses of "they're scaring the wardens away" and "the wardens are there, they're just hiding" for the bit.
"Okay, I think I got everything"
"Oh, you don't leave"
"Huh?"
"You never leave.. you never leave once you enter" He begins to do the dark and scary voice while he quickly types in the /gamemode hard into chat, summoning a few wardens around you.
You yelp and quickly sprint away, taking a solid five hearts of damage from one hit. You're unable to turn the game back to peaceful as you try your best to run away. You attempt to build straight up but are hit again, killing you.
All your items burst out of your inventory as you stare at the 'You died!' screen, jaw hanging agape. You slowly turn your head towards the brunette next to you as chat explodes with comments.
"Charlie!"

freminet headcanons + extra drabbles!
romance, personality, and tidbits!
- deep down, he always wanted to become a diving instructor. how could he keep the oceanic scenery and adventure to himself? but he believes his introverted behavior holds him back :*(
- when he becomes close to you, he will become a whole snuggle bug, and will ask to cuddle whenever you guys are alone together~!
- his room is super well decorated. a bunch of adorable stuffed animals on his bed, stunning photographs and posters on his wall, and why, penguin decor of course! he also has a plentiful amount of seashells and souvenirs from his explorations.
- freminet's love for cuddling applies to hugs as well. I already know he gives the best hugs there is! he holds you tight, and whenever you're sad and in need of comfort, he quietly listens and delicately rubs your back.

- he gets startled quite easily. freminet is definitely not a fan when he is suddenly crept up on! lyney often surprises him in this way, being the magician he is.
- freminet has a habit of biting his nails. he even moves onto the skin.. poor thing. because of this, he lets you paint his nails at times to steer him away from the biting, and he tries his best as to not ruin the polish.
- he is very mechanically inclined. he will even make a toy just like pers for you, any animal you desire! he absolutely adores your reaction to his creations! it inspires him to keep on creating them. :)
- he absolutely LOVES sleepovers! the fun of doing skincare routines and face masks together, the glow in your eyes as he listens in on the stories you tell, and if you fall asleep first, he hums a gentle lullaby, only ever loud enough to be a whisper~
- freminet can get overwhelmed from crowds and excessive questions, and so he relies on you in certain social situations. he is also more of a sensitive person, and avoids unnecessary conflict. if you catch anyone saying something about freminet, even one negative aspect, you are on the front lines to defend him!
- his eyelashes are very long. and I mean, long. you always compliment him on how pretty they are, and when you first met him, you accidentally glanced at them for too long.. oops!
- this boy is super duper ticklish. if you even slightly brush your hand against his ticklish spots, he bursts out in laughter. you love seeing him so giggly, so you do it whenever possible! >:D

- he is very closed off. this goes back to how he feels about diving with others. he doesn't want to do a bad job, and is filled with the overwhelming fear of doing so. when you finally dive with him for the first time, he is like a completely different person. he effortlessly guides you through the depths of the sea, taking great attention to your status, your favorite sights and sea creatures, and freminet constantly checks up on you to make sure that you're comfortable.

An absurdly detailed analysis of That One Soldat Photo
Hang around wintersberg fandom long enough, and you'll likely run into a popular crack-theory that, since Heisenberg obviously thinks that building a set of huge, yellow-painted signposts is a good way to point Ethan to the Stronghold, maybe it's Heisenberg who's been leaving all those handy, yellow-painted supply crates all over the place for Ethan to find! It's exactly the kind of fun nonsense I'd enjoy if it didn't feel folks are starting to take it a little too literally (by which I mean I have now read multiple fics in which it's played completely straight ‒ and, like, people do get that it's just a crack theory, right? Like, why would Heisenberg have left so many yellow crates around his own damn factory? Look, you don't have to explain every last game mechanic, not everything is lore!)
But as anyone reading my own fic would know, I'm guilty of echoing the idea that Heisenberg-was-leaving-stuff-for-Ethan myself ‒ just not because of any yellow-striped crates. No, I'm way more interested in this one weird soldat-photo you can find in the village ‒ long hours before you'll ever see your first Soldat in the flesh...
Very creepy. And if you turn it over, you'll find a clue to a puzzle you'll have to solve in order to progress.
(And of course, when you do look out the window, odds are you'll get jump-scared by a lycan just when you're focused on the numbers, because RE8 loves that sort of misdirection ‒ but I digress.)
Anyway, the code you can see out the window will open a safe containing a jack handle you'll need to move a vehicle in the village, as well as the M1911 pistol (which will very likely be your go-to handgun for the rest of the game). The game is full of conveniently-helpful clues like that (heck, most games are), often with no obvious Watsonian justification. And there are other photos around the village ‒ Luiza has a whole photo album ‒ but photos of experiments created by Miranda and her lords don't generally turn up outside their own territory.
For a player exploring the village for the first time, that photo is a lovely little bit of foreshadowing, hinting at monsters and factory stages to come. But on replaying with full knowledge of Heisenberg's later attempts to get Ethan on his side, that Soldat photo is just enough to make you go, huh... did Heisenberg leave that for Ethan? Like, on purpose?
You can find another copy of that photo later, in Heisenberg's factory, along with his notes on his early series Soldat experiments. Which doesn't really prove anything beyond the fact that assets exist to be reused... but it does at least make it pretty canon that Heisenberg has photos of his Soldats sitting around.
Possibly also significant: both the clue photo and the factory documents are tagged 'geekmemo' in the game files. Most everything related to Heisenberg in the files is labeled 'geek'-something ‒ it seems to be an early nickname for his character that lasted well into production. Everything in the factory is geek-something, even the model for the passageway from the altar to the bridge is labeled 'pathtogeek'. Considering that so many soldat-related assets are already labeled 'geek', maybe that 'geekmemo' tag doesn't really tell us anything we don't already know ‒ but it certainly doesn't work against the idea that Heisenberg wrote that 'memo' himself.
Besides, it's not like there isn't precedent for this kind of thing. RE7 had a whole mechanic where you'd have to find 'treasure photos' pointing out the location of a few rare and useful items, all with "I hid something here" written on the back. We're never explicitly told who left those photos lying around, but it's obviously Lucas: he loves playing games, he loves taunting prisoners with the possibility of escape, and who else would it be? The complete population of the Baker mansion is like 6 people and a bunch of semi-sentient mould.
Over in RE8, there are a lot more village resident who might have left that clue lying around. Like it or not though, Heisenberg is very much RE8's equivalent of Lucas: the family's wildcard show-boater who loves making Ethan jump through hoops for his amusement. So how does the game let us know it was Heisenberg who left this particular clue? Well, who else would leave a message on the back of a Soldat photo?
There's may be additional supporting evidence Heisenberg could be involved ‒ most notably the location, being a locked-off cul-de-sac labeled 'Workshop' on signs and maps. The area is full of metal junk very much like you'll later see lying around the factory.
The workshop location does have other relevance ‒ it makes sense that you'd find the jack handle in the village workshop, whether Heisenberg was involved or not. But it also stands to reason that if there's anywhere in the village proper where Heisenberg might hang around and leave clues for Ethan, the workshop is it. And you have to admit that leaving Ethan useful stuff in a safe along with an easy clue that will likely get him jumped by a lycan is 100% more in-character for the guy than just leaving useful stuff out in the open, even if it doesn't really prove anything either.
There's one more weird-little does-this-mean-anything detail: there are three dead crows near the safe too.
It's not the first time in the game you've seen dead crows (there were a bunch outside the village, and I've talked about what that might mean in the context of Miranda's cult before). But I don't remember finding any others around the village itself, other than in this one spot. And instead of being hung from trees like a ritual sacrifice, these ones are just dead ‒ messily, and with blood everywhere.
Now, maybe it doesn't mean anything, but is there anyone in the village more likely to vent his frustrations by violently killing a few of Mother Miranda's avian avatars than Heisenberg? I'd think not.
In conclusion: I still don't think all those yellow crates have anything to do with Heisenberg. And I still don't know for sure whether the RE8 development team wanted me to assume that Heisenberg left Ethan that photo, jack handle and gun. I don't know if we're supposed to read that Heisenberg keeps a workshop in the village and sometimes kills crows out of spite. But the evidence sure does point that way ‒ and it's as valid an interpretation as anything else you might take from this game.

Limbus Faust Theory Time
Ok, so I've been thinking about this for a while. Ever since someone on Limbus' TvTropes page pointed out some Faust (Book) symbolism in Faust's base ego I've had this big fucking theory about Faust that I already know can't be confirmed until her Canto. And considering that (By the current order) that's gonna take like 2 years, I'm just gonna say it now.
Faust is actually a clone of the original Faust.
My evidence
Faust's symbol is a Flask. Now while Play!Faust (and the actual guy he was partially based on) was an alchemist, a flask specifically is a symbol of one character in the whole book/play; the Homunculus. The Homunculus is born as a small flame inside of a glass flask (And yes this is what Father from FMA's initial form was based on), created by Faust's (pre-deal with the devil) assistant Wagner who wishes to see the world. To this end, the Homunculus accompanies Faust and Mephistopheles to a Walpurgis Night (Sound familiar?) where they discover the wonders of nature. At the end of their segment, they shatter their flask and become one with the ocean.
It's weird that Project Moon would give Faust, based on a character who's literally the namesake for the term Faustian bargain, a symbol based on the flask instead of say, a demon. Not to mention Faust's sword saying Walpurgisnacht and her association with the in-game event. Unless of course, Faust isn't supposed to represent Faust himself, but rather the Homunculus. And that word almost universally regarded as a term for an artificial approximation of a human.
Every base EGO (Other than Rodion and Mersault for whatever reason) has a shadow across it that correlates to their respective Sinner's backstory in some way. Of the ones we have so far; Yi Sang's is a wing (Representing the wings he saw on his other self in the mirror and his status as a wing asset), Ishmael's is an anchor (Her previous status as a sailor and metaphorically her weighing herself to getting revenge on Ahab), Gregor's is a bunch of grasping hands (His experiences during the Smoke war), and Sinclair's is a tree with a snake going around it (Representing the temptation Kromer gave him that he gave into, which resulted in his family being slaughtered by her).
Faust's base EGO has the shadow of three separate people standing around her. Going off the original story, these would correlate to Faust, Wagner, and Mephistopheles standing around the Homunculus' flask. This is the specific bit pointed out by TvTropes that gave birth to this whole theory.
The abnormality EGO each character gets also tends to relate to them in some way, on a similar level to how each EGO used in a realization in Library of Ruina represented certain experiences. For example, as of the time of this writing Ishmael has Roseate Desire, Blind Obsession (Both relating to obsession and refusal to let go), Capote (Blind rage), and Ardor Blossom Star (Guidance or the lack thereof without a goal).
Faust's current EGO as of this writing include 9:2 (Forbidden knowledge), Telepole (experimentation), Hexnail (Abandonment), and Fluid Sack (Lack of direction), which in my opinion fits more with a creation trying to find their purpose in life after being free of their creator than someone willing to sell their soul for infinite knowledge.
It's mentioned that Faust rarely sleeps, and she rarely seems to be as affected by things like motion sickness or exhaustion as the other Sinners, which points towards her having some kind of inherent enhancement in some way.
The backstory of the homunculus matches with a shared desire among a lot of the other Sinners who we do know the backstory of; namely the idea of exploring the world and finding people you can truly call companions along the way.
Now, why do I think Faust is specifically a clone of the original and not say, a lab-created experiment? Well:
When we see Yi Sang's flashback to him agreeing to join the Company, we see him being recruited by someone who has to be Faust. She has the same voice actor and character name color... except we also never see her face, and the figure notably isn't identified as Faust and is instead credited as ???. Not only does the game usually explicitly identify a character as long as they've been properly introduced, but even the "But Yi Sang didn't know who it was at the time" doesn't work considering he's remembering and knows who Faust is now.
Faust is Sinner #2 instead of Sinner #1. While we can't be certain that Sinner numbers are based on recruitment order (Though there does seem to be some precedence in that Heathcliff seems to have been around when Ishmael was recruited, and he's #7 to her #8, and #10 Dante may have been recruited in their original self before Sinclair, Outis, and Gregor and simply never introduced to the group) it's odd that someone who otherwise acts as the head of the company (Recruiting Vergilius and Yi Sang, making the bus, etc.) would only be #2. In fact it's odd for that person to be in the field in the first place.
We know cloning is possible in the City, enough so that the Head outright has a law governing it. Namely, that only one copy of a person can exist within the City after week's time period. Note how that's worded. Only one copy of a person can exist within the City after a week's time period.
Conveniently, we now know the inner workings of the bus just so happen to have a portal that leads to different parts of the Outskirts.
Faust has a habit of referring to herself in third person, but she's a bit inconsistent about it. In fact, a lot of the time it happens when she's boasting of knowledge specifically. But maybe she's not saying things in third person. Maybe she's intentionally saying "Faust is a well-renowned genius" instead of "I am a well-renowned genius".
Faust being a clone would also fit with who actually runs the company itself. It doesn't seem to be the Purple Tear (The three who attack Dante in the prologue seem to be her agents) and Faust is the one who seems to give everyone instructions, including both Dante and Vergilius, yet there has to be someone coordinating all the other aspects of the company like arranging travel and the Before and After teams. But maybe it is Faust doing everything. Just not the same Faust we're interacting with.
To sum it up, I think Faust is the one running the company, but not the same Faust who's part of the Sinners. I think she made a clone of herself, imparting all her knowledge into it before going to the Outskirts to run the company from there (Just like how Ayin and Carmen had their original facility there), leaving the clone to fulfill its own desire to see the world and also take the risk involved with becoming a Sinner in her place. The reason Vergilius gives so much respect to Faust? Because she's a proxy of the original, the original who recruited him and the other Sinners in the first place. The various shady shit Faust does? All on orders from the original. Faust's constant boasting of her own knowledge in third person? She's trying to convince herself that she's as good as the original Faust instead of just a copy.

💫 Jupiter in the signs 🪐
Not enough people talk about how Jupiter is special in describing the kind of life you want and your version of success in this world. Jupiter is all about the bigger picture, so the sign you have in Jupiter can weigh heavy on the kind of life you want for yourself to feel fulfilled, because it is the larger picture, the bigger image, the story of your life that you see. And your approach to that can be determined by the sign Jupiter in.
ARIES JUPITER
You grab life by the balls and run with what you have in mind. You decide on what you want and live by that. This can then make life easy for you in terms of decisions. You're decisive because of your fierce and daring nature. This can make people intimidate by you (and not like you because you make even come across as selfish). Or love you for your honesty. At the end of the day, you'll stay being resilient to what you have in mind for your life.
Your image of success is being able to browse through life doing exactly what you want to do and not what anyone else tells you to do, or if they do tell you, it should be something that makes and comes from an authoritative figure, not someone similar to you (by age and circumstance) or younger.
The things you usually need and want to feel fulfilled vary, but they always stand on one ground: that they need to be true to who you are. The image you want to set up for the picture of your life, the true story of your life. So you rarely oblige by living out what people want from you. You don't care. And you never will. You're probably the most peace-loving being in your circle or with people that know you. And I don't mean you always seek peace and are a peace-giver or people-pleaser. I mean peace is just the theme of how you go about life, you get bored by up & down and in & out theatrics. You like relaxation.
Your version of success is most likely being surround by your favourite things (and perhaps looking like a million bucks is an added bonus). You want luxury and you want comfort. You don't want to ever feel discomfort or tension or hardships in your life, you like the finer things and you appreciate the finer things.

And most likely, the things you seek and desire are always things that connect with your five sense. GEMINI JUPITER
You go through life in a happy go lucky way, so much so that you actually get confused sometimes about what to really do and which path of fun to take. Because there's so much to do and you want to be busy at it all. You just wish you split yourself in two (or three or four) and do it all at once. But… you end up just moving in little steps and dabbling in a bit of everything.
Your version of success is having a bunch of achievements under your name, small and big, and then feeling fulfilled that you enjoyed the journey. Because life for you is pretty much learning and exploring and talking about everything there is to life (and I mean everything), you don't have this whole big, grand idea about life or about yourself, you just take little steps and walks in everything and call it 'part of the journey'.
Things you like and want to feel fulfilled are most likely things that are just easily obtainable for the moment you need them. For example, a camera to start or continue your YouTube channel, or a waist trainer to motivate your physical health journey, etc. These useful things leave you content enough to feel fulfilled and lively.

The angelic energy swoops in the minute you think about life in the bigger sense. You seem like a sincere and pure figure of art. Down under? You're boiling with so many plans on what you want to do on life. And you act on them day by day. You want it all to be taken care of. But not with a rush. It could also be attributes like just being an amazing person, a grounded yet confident person, a person who can you use their heart and their mind well, a person who's humble but also a king/queen. I'm sure giving and receiving a lot of respect from many people is a major theme for you. wander <--> peepers bodyswap thoughts
the concept of a woy bodyswap thing has been taking over my mind lately…specifically between wander and peepers. they’re the most interesting option i think!!! they have a lot of parallels i feel but they don’t often get explored which is a shame because i love them. and i feel you can do more with them than other potential bodyswaps
read more is a bunch of thoughts i have about this concept!!! directly copied from a twitter threads i wrote about it so they’re a bit disjointed i don’t feel like writing anything more coherent at the moment
sylvia would recognize that wander isn’t himself like Right Away and would have some Fun tormenting peepers (psychologically. she would not harm a hair on wander’s head) and pretending that she Doesn’t know. (he might try to play the part of wander to idk gain info? try to capture them or something ?) but peepers might still figure out that she does. when this happens (or when sylvia gets tired of messing with him) they team up to grab wander and try to change the two back
now, on wander’s end. of course he’s going to take advantage of the swap as MUCH as he can. of course he’s going to try getting back to his own body! eventually!! but this is a huge opportunity to get close to hater as his Actual Best Friend!!! and to try his best to influence hater to do more good. lots of silly shenanigans unfold.
NOW. one of the aspects of this i REALLY find interesting. is how their luck shakes out
i’m not quiet about how much wander’s luck interests me. probability manipulation wander my beloved. whether it’s inherent to him, mysterious creature that he is, has something to do with the hat or both, i Like It A Lot. peepers lacks this luck—he’s a common victim to all the slapstick humor. but since they’ve swapped bodies, this is changed for them
peepers now has wander’s luck to protect him and wander loses it. and just WAUGGHH imagine how peepers feels the first time he notices this—when normally he’d fall square on his head he lands gracefully on his feet. where he’d get hit by whatever object makes most sense it narrowly avoids him. Suddenly he’s not a punching bag anymore. incredible
and on wander’s end—the exact opposite. wander is rarely on the receiving end of slapstick compared to the rest of the cast, and now he could get a Ton of it. idk! the concept just!! intrigues me!!! i want to know how he’d deal with all of this
it’s all fun and games at first but honestly i feel like it Could stress him out a good amount. especially considering he doesn’t have sylvia or (importantly) his hat who often ground him when he’s getting anxious. dude He Doesn’t Have His Hat!!! what is wander gonna do when he realizes peepers can’t function without heaps of coffee. for peepers this whole thing could actually be kind of a break. wander is going through Hell lacking his normal coping mechanisms. Would you be willing to elaborate on why you think hoo broke the rules of the world? I didn’t like the series bc of what it did to the og character arcs but I never caught onto it breaking the rules. No pressure to do so I’m mostly just curious

Big Three Kids!
The whole point of PJO was that there was nobody like Percy. That they were rare and were destined to be hunted to death because they weren't meant to be born. So then, of course, you assume they don't exist! The ones who are alive each paid a heavy price- Bianca and Thalia died, Thalia chose immortality, Bianca and Nico each lived in a weird universe where they missed out on their own lives.
There was no real reason for Jason to be a child of Zeus other than to put him in a position of leadership, but the thing about New Rome is that they have a different system about these things anyway with their cohorts and stuff and him being Thalia's sister adds so little to anything it was just a really stupid move imo.
I get what Riordan was trying to do with Hazel by circumventing the rule-- but it feels cheap and tacky. ESPECIALLY because Hazel's powers are so badly plotted out that she could have just as easily been a child of Hecate lol.
The most baffling one, though, is FRANK who is for some reason a legacy of Poseidon? I would have thought that was cool-- like being a legacy and so many generations before you having lived out their lives despite being demigods? SUPER cool. In that case. Why is he also a son of Mars?
It feels like too much is being packed into too little and when you don't have the time to explore these things, they just seem like he's saying hey. I know I said it's rare for demigods to grow old. But that's GREEK demigods. The ROMANS are super cool and super fun and they don't stand by the same rules!
2. The actual powers themselves.
Leo, son of Hephaestus and brother of Charles Beckendorf who died in a fire- now has control over fire! Piper can basically brainwash anyone because she's got Charmspeak but wait! There's more! Her sister Drew ALSO has Charmspeak!! Both of them are, of course, sisters of a girl who was manipulated into betraying all her friends <3 Hazel's a daughter of Hades? She's magic. Also she has power over gems and knows her way underground (I cannot even begin to think of WHAT made him decide the black girl needs to play ANY of these roles but I digress). Frank's just an average son of Mars who can turn into any animal he wants, which is totally cool and normal!
Do you remember how special Percy was in PJO? How hard other demigods had to train in combat because they would be killed if they didn't learn it? Remember how absolutely rare it was to see demigods with that kind of power, to the point where Chiron didn't want Percy and Thalia to be near each other because he feared they'd destroy everything? Not anymore <3 Super Powerful Demigods can now sit together on a ship and face no consequences at all, even when they have minor disagreements because they all come together very organically !!
3. Character arcs
I know you said it, but I can't talk about HoO and not bring up Nico di Angelo. Tell me why he went through his arc TWICE in two series? Here's the reason: because Mr. Riordan didn't want to make any of the main cast gay <3 He did it for woke points, so he was like hey hold on what if. Instead of any combination of the FIVE new characters I introduced being gay... I can retcon my Straight Series so it looks like I'm far more inclusive!
Great job, Mr. Riordan. You have raised a bunch of rabid fans who like Nico now because he's Gay and not because at one point he was an innocent boy who loses everything and fights to find his way back home. His story in PJO was a large part of the Great Prophecy, and yet... all of that was washed away in order to make him Gay Gay Gay.
Percy and Annabeth, we know-- it's a travesty. Stupid Percy and Robot Annabeth we've been through this a thousand times fuck that shit but it's so disappointing because as readers WE know these characters. We know them from PJO where they were each their own person and they had some good moments but HoO effectively wiped off the super strong friendship they already had going.
4. A HALFBLOOD'S LIFE!!!!
WHY has that been cheapened to the point of a joke!! It's literally so insane like the first series is about how difficult it is to be a half-blood. Greek and Roman mythology are not as different as Greek and Egyptian, see, so TKC ad MCGA can afford to change up the rules but HoO can't. That's like. The whole point!! So to randomly say hey actually this group is perfectly fine and the reason they're living so well is because the Greeks aren't as organised is so offensive to the reader because up until now all we had was the Greek camp! He flips it over and then somehow blames US for being stupid enough to think that's the only way to live.... and still decides to give the Roman camp child soldiers?????????????????????????????????????????????? make it make sense im begging
5. The bloody GODS
What did HoO do. Like. What did it do.
Because I can tell you what PJO did. PJO was about the gods learning to hold themselves accountable for the lives they create, drew a parallel between mortals, demi-mortals and immortal beings and dissected the value of life. It was a learning curve for everyone involved: for Luke, for Percy, and for the gods he so unwaveringly served. That was the point. That Luke was right, that the gods were primarily to blame because they don't care enough about human life. That they don't even care about minor gods. They swore to change.
And HoO is like aha I know I made it a whole thing and it was a huge sacrifice on Percy's part because he was offered immortality in place of the gods being held accountable-- but sike they haven't changed, even ONE YEAR down the line.
It makes the ENTIRE first Great Prophecy a TOTAL joke. Like what was the point of ANY of that happening if the gods were jut going to revert to being the exact same???
6. Harrowing realities of war
According to the wiki, there were forty campers fighting at the Battle of Manhattan. Forty. That's how many demigods there were. Yeah, the Hunters helped and the party ponies also came in- but it was a small team of campers. Between BotL and TLO, I can think off the top of my head about Lee Mitchell, Castor or Pollux (whichever one) Charles Beckendorf, Michael Yew, Silena Beauregard who died. A lot of these characters have been mentioned before as well! And they died. Because children shouldn't be fighting a war, actually, and yet here they were, dying before they could apply to college. The finale was just this horrible moment when Silena dies and Kronos attacks Chiron and everything seems so bleak and it's when Annabeth loses faith that you know everything is going to change.
Meanwhile HoO is the most absurd final battle, I think, because if I'm being honest, I don't even know who the enemy is. First they're fighting giants then the gods arrive and Fix it for them and then they're fighting Romans and Greeks and then there's monsters in their armies? And SIKE it's actually Gaea who's the Big Bad and defeating her fixes everything as though ANY of that makes sense!! So what, then? All the work that they did in PJO- the friends they buried and the enemies they spared-- that is stupid, right, when you can just get some girl to come and scream "please stop fighting"? What is the point of the war then?
Just because it's more complicated.... doesn't make the writing good.
7. What Theme.
Percy Jackson is about finding your place in the world. It's about home and it's about hope and it's about knowing that you're never alone. That love is always the answer, that faith and belief are the only motivators and that all darkness can be defeated with light. Someoe tell me what HoO is about. Earth Bad, Teenagers Good? It's not even about bridging the gap between the Greeks and Romans which is what it ostensibly claims is the core of the series. Makes it feel like PJO was dumb to have a theme at all. <3

PJO is a story. HoO is a bunch of scenes sewn together where every scene is designed to be more insane and also to consistently undermine everything that happens in PJO. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

To your disappointment, you don't get a message right away.
Ah, well. I know you guys have had trouble sending messages before. I wonder why that is? Eh, anyway.
"It's 11," you tell the flesh while setting one last alarm. "So... like I said, there's a few things I want to do before I leave, but is there anything you want to do? Or, my uh, brain helpers suggested you might want some kind of memento. I haven't got much on me, but I could give you a little something."
"Hm... I hadn't thought about that. ...I think I just want to spend the time with you. Playing more of that game would also be enjoyable. As for a memento, that sounds nice."
"Alright, let's see... I've got this sharpie- it's for writing and drawing, you saw me using it earlier when I was working on the stone key. It'll eventually run out of ink and stop working, but you could use it in the meantime. And I have this hairtie. You do have hair- do you want me to show you how it works?"
"Oh... do I have to choose one?"
"Oh, nah, I'll give you both if you want them. Neither are really rare or valuable back home. ...I'd give you something better but I don't have anything..."
"That's alright. I appreciate them anyway. And yes, please show me how the hairtie works."
You do, and then the flesh tries it. It gets a little tangled at first, but seems to get the hang of it on the second try.
"There you go! That looks good on you, I think." You smile at it.
"Thank you." It smiles back.
Then chat's message comes through. Unsurprisingly based on previous experience, the words aren't really clear, definitely not enough to actually write it down. But you do get a little bit of the gist. They've wanted to help keep you safe, they care about you. Something like that, at least.
Aw, thanks chat. Haha, 'chat' definitely feels a little silly now. But anyway- I don't think I got most of the message, but it feels nice, at least, so thanks.
The next idea from chat is to try turning all the keys in their respective keyholes in case something happens, but you feel kind of skeptical, and, more importantly, you don't want to let any of the keys out of your sight. Just in case. So you decide against it. Then they suggest asking the flesh about coming with you. You... kind of don't want it to. Not because you don't wish you could see it again, but, well, you'd be really worried about it on earth. ...You guess you might as well ask about it, though.
"So, flesh- are you definitely planning to stay here? I mean, I think that's probably the best choice for you. I'll miss you, but..."
"Ah... yes, I'm going to stay. I'll certainly be sad to part ways with you, but as I said before, I don't think the gate is supposed to work for more than one person, and I don't want to risk your ability to get home. And besides that... I know so little about this world. I want to explore it and learn more."
"That sounds nice, honestly. I wish you the best here."
You smile at each other again.
"What are you planning to do before you leave?"
"Oh, well... I want to take some things with me, if I can. ...Maybe I can't, but I'm gonna try at least. And I want to take a bunch of pictures with my phone. ...Do you know what pictures are..?"
"I don't."
"Well, it's like... my phone can capture exactly how things look right now so I can see later."
"Oh... I've never heard of something like that. Can you show me?"
"Yeah, here..."
You show it the photos you've taken here, and some from back home.
"That's very impressive. I can understand why you would want such a record."
"Yeah... -Alright, well, there's only so much time, so I'm gonna start working on it."
"Alright."
The flesh follows you as you check in every room, taking pictures. In the plant room, you manage to explain to the flesh how to take a video and get it to record you messing with the clock. You also take a couple fruits, harvest the seeds from one and take the other one whole. It's a bit unwieldy but you tuck it under your arm. In the stone room, you put one of the discarded bits of marble in your pocket.
"I don't know if I'll even actually show anyone all this? I guess I just want the option to."
"Why wouldn't you?"
"I mean, based on what we know about reality, generally, back home, this whole experience seems pretty crazy. I don't know if anyone would believe me. ...So if I do try and convince someone, all this evidence might be helpful. Also I really want to find out if these seeds will grow back home, cause I don't think there's any plant like this there."
"I suppose that all makes sense. ...Although, why would someone not believe you even with this evidence? It seems very strong."
"Oh, well, people have figured out some pretty impressive ways to fake stuff. It can be really convincing. ...I guess that at least if I show people this they're more likely to think I'm playing an elaborate prank and less likely to think I'm insane, so that's probably good."
The flesh also agrees to let you take pictures and video of it, even showing off its shape-changing ability. It's very cool, if also very body-horror.
Finally feeling that you've gathered as much as you can- at least without annoying the walls, the floors, the ceilings, and everything within them- you settle back in the pool room with the flesh. You let it play around with your phone (supervised; you don't need it seeing some of the stuff on there). You just enjoy its company. You do really wish you could see it again after this. But unless there are some serious breakthroughs in interdimensional travel in your lifetime, you guess this'll be all you get. That's probably best for it. But you're still sad.
Your alarm goes off for 11:55. You take your phone back from the flesh.
"Hm... flesh, do you know where exactly the gate is? Uh, is this the gate?" You gesture at the pool the two of you are leaning up against while sitting on the floor.
"Oh, yes, it is. You didn't know..?"
"I wasn't sure. I mean, it's where I was when I got here, but I don't know how it works as a... transportation... device?"
"I confess I'm not certain either. I think it should become clear when it's ready to be used, though."
"Alright then..."
You stand up and stretch, the flesh following suit.
"...I guess we'll just see, probably in five minutes."
So you wait silently, watching the gate, for an awkward five minutes. Finally, though, the edge of the pool sort of... opens up in four spots, across from each door, forming keyholes.
"Ah... I bet I know how this works."
Sure enough, each key fits in the keyhole opposite its elemental door. You hesitate, anxious, as you reach the last keyhole.
"Hey, flesh... I guess this is the time to say goodbye. Um... I'm glad I met you. And thanks for being with me during all this. You made it feel less terrifying."
You too, chat. I'm not sure I woulda made it without you.
"Thank you. I'm glad I met you too. I hadn't thought about myself separately from the walls, the floors, the ceilings, and everything within them before, but I think it makes me happy to discover and explore on my own. You encouraged me to find that out. I'll miss you."
Damn, you're a little choked up.
"I'll miss you too." You let out a breath. "...I'd better do this before I miss my chance."
You fit the final key into its slot and turn it. For a moment nothing happens, and then...
"Woah."
It's like it's glowing with darkness. But you only let yourself be stunned for a moment before gathering everything up, giving the flesh one last smile, and cautiously stepping over the rim into the gate.
The feeling is indescribable. You're experiencing something but it's completely incomprehensible. Like your senses tried to open an image file as a text file or something. And it only lasts for a split second of utter confusion before
you're home.

Just watched Joy Ride (2023) and mixed thoughts.
Spoilers below!!
It was really, really refreshing to see East Asian women being portrayed as unapologetically raunchy and messy and terrible and fucked up. It's the first time I've seen a movie where they're NOT some out together socialite or kung fu badass or a fetishized dragon lady or delicate lotus flower. The characterization was well done and I felt like they were fleshed out pretty well, and it was a very sex-positive portrayal of East Asian women and it was done ENTIRELY without fetishizing them. It's a low bar to pass and the fact that this is the first movie I've seen that passes this bar is... depressing but it was very nice to see that they can be trashy and sexy and just be themselves.
It's the typical sort of humour you'd expect from an R-rated comedy. Not my sort of thing entirely, but I had some laughs for sure and some other reviewers thought it was hilarious.
I could tell that the film was indeed made by diaspora for diaspora. There were just so many little details sprinkled through the whole thing that I could recognize from lived experience
While the film certainly made some commentary on internalized racism, I felt like it never really followed through with exploring this theme, or that when it did, it was somewhat superficial and did not really fully address it. Same goes for exploring the theme of being in-between - something that's very, very central to diaspora - as well as the identity crisis evoked by a twist I admit I was surprised by. All of these, while they had the potential to be weaved more strongly into the film, were not really fully addressed - and while this is a comedy movie, the way that all these themes were set up as serious things to address led to a rather mediocre reaction to its execution.
The female gaze is generally very, very, very present for this film, which is once again rare to see in R-rated comedies with nudity and sex. None of the four friends are ever objectified as sex objects, and anything sexual is something they choose for their own pleasure. It's a very sex-positive take, again.
Sprinkles of queer Asian experience in there too, which is nice to see. I found Deadeye to be a very compelling character as I can relate to them in several levels, and it was really really nice to see queer Asians who can be awkward, be raunchy, be terrible, be unapologetic, a d just be human.
Plot was a typical comedy plot, so not revolutionary at all and with some plot holes, but it's a plot.
One more point under the cut with bigger spoilers but also CW: Mentions of SA.
Overall, I'd give it a 6.5 - 7/10. Not great, not bad. Could've been better. Some weird spots. But it sure is something, and I'm glad to see more Asian American rep all across different genres.
One of the biggest scenes that made me feel off was a scene where Stephanie Hsu's character, Kat, has a bag of coke up her ass, and it breaks. She freaks out because she feels it entering her system and it makes her, as she says, "very horny." At this point, she and the three others are in a hotel with a bunch of hot athletic Asian men who are friends with one of the MCs. One of the men, who's also Kat's ex, tries to hit on her and hook up with her, but she tries to reject him - she also tells him that she's engaged, which he is. He does not back off and he does not take her seriously. She runs off (to the gym). He follows.
While he definitely thinks she's sober (he has no idea she's on drugs), the rest of the gals, FULLY AWARE that Kat is completely drugged out of her mind and being hit on by someone she does not want to be with, decide to go their separate ways while wishing everyone a good time and to "have fun tonight". Nobody checks on Kat.
At that point in the film I was beginning to get extremely worried that they were going to play off a date rape-esque scenario as a humorous, joking one given how the entire tone of this scene was a humorous one.
At the end, they do not have sex, thank God.
The scene between them is indeed sexually charged. What happens is that she pulls a muscle when trying to work off the energy, and he uses a muscle blaster/massage gun on her back. He does not touch her without her asking him to, but she is still under the influence of drugs (which he doesn't know...but still...). She then grabs a basketball and puts it between her thighs, and he uses the massage gun on the basketball. Afterwards, she takes the gun and uses it on his balls, and apparently shatters his pelvis. Wow
This is never addressed afterwards, ever. The scene left me feeling rather confused and more uncomfortable than anything else in the entire movie. Maybe I'm reading too much into it but something about it was clanging bells in my head.

Hiii sorry to come at you with this out of nowhere but, even though I don't share the same headcanon for them *specifically* it makes me happy to see that queerplatonic fakiru post pop up on my dash now and then. As an aroace person, even among other aces it feels like people are either against the term, or if they're nice about it, it's in a patronizing i-dont-understand-but-good-for-you-kiddo way so it's just really nice to come across people who Get It ❤️❤️❤️

back on topic, aaaa ty!! I love fakiru a whole bunch and it's really fun to explore them in ways that aren't necessarily romantic. I like to call them my schrodingers couple where they're in love romantically and platonically simultaneously in my head and which one I'm running with largely depends on my mood on any given day. That said, I'm arospec myself so I tend to write them as what my self-indulgent relationship would look like and that's largely queerplatonic.
And god you're so right about how people treat queerplatonic relationships!! It's so rare to see queerplatonic headcanons, especially with a fandom darling like fakiru. I was actually really scared people would be weird about my aro duck posts but I'm super stoked to see the positive reception. There's a real need for good representation of queerplatonic relationships but as it is I feel they just get bowled over in favor of romance which is seen as a more "real" form of love/companionship

Thank you much for your kind words! I'm so glad you enjoy my photography! I doubt I can pick one best photograph, but I'm happy to talk about a few of my favorites, and I'll say a few words about "natural talent" at the end.
To me photography is so great because it gets me out into the world doing cool things. It gets me to explore places that I wouldn't have otherwise and gives me awesome insight into the world. That's more important than any photo I've taken.

Waiting
Okay first favorite photo is this shot at Dulles Airport. This was taken right after the Dulles Metro station opened in late 2022. I think this was the first time I really nailed the alien blue/green night time look. I've used it a bunch since.
The photo perfectly captures the distant, disconnected feel I often try to capture in my photography. In this case, the photo was taken from a parking garage next to the metro station with a long lens. Love it.
Forest in the Tidal Basin
Next up is this landscape taken at The Tidal Basin on a foggy night. So many things I love about this photo, first just being the experience of capturing it. I love foggy nights and this one was perfect. Thick fog all night, not too chilly.
In many ways this photo is an anomaly. It's a pure landscape which is reasonably rare for me to shoot living in DC, and it's a woodland shot which I've never really understood and generally do not like. I used a tripod for this shot, which is fairly rare for me. Yet it has a lot of elements that are familiar in my photography. Long lens, devoid of people, night shot, and a bit spooky.
As soon as I took this shot I knew it was gonna be good, and I was flabbergasted that this was first truly great shot for 2023.
Castle and The Sunset
Third we've got this panorama taken on Whiteface Mountain in The Adirondacks, above Lake Placid. This photo also comes with a cool story. @lesbianredpanda and I were headed down Whiteface Mountain as the place was closing.
We got caught up in this gorgeous sunset. We took our all of our cameras and started shooting. A truck full of employees pulled up behind and told us the place was closing & they were gonna shut the gates when they got to the bottom & we'd have to call the State Police to get out.
We packed up and Avery sped us down the mountain, burning brake smell the whole way. I was scaring her by taking pics out the window. Awesome time. Terrifying.
Technically, I did everything wrong in this shot. I took this HDR panorama that consists of 40 photos, shot handheld with a 28mm lens wide open at f/1.4. It shouldn't have worked out but it did!
What's in the Dark?
Last shot is my most popular photo here on Tumblr. It also should not have worked! An 8 minute exposure into darkness in the middle of the night near Lake Placid in The Adirondacks. The vibes are immaculate.
This photo has inspired me to keep trying weird stuff to see if it works. Usually it doesn't. I don't think I've ever really replicated the feeling of this shot since. Doesn't matter tho, it's cool & has inspired so much.
Those are my favorite! There's so many important photos to me, it's hard to choose a few.
Natural Talent
Okay, so I do have a bone to pick with the concept of natural talent. I doubt it really exists. For me specifically though, I don't think I'm naturally talented in photography.
I've tried to get into photography several times, and failed many times! Heck, I didn't even think to get a camera until I had been hiking around NY for a year. When I finally did get a camera I didn't like it and quit photography soon after.
There is no natural talent here. Instead, there's years of trying, failure, and, most importantly, a ton of time spent learning and going out taking photos. Then repeat the process to learn how to edit photos.
I would much rather have this time I've invested in photography be recognized, as I think it's what has made me any good at this stuff. Not inherent ability.

Tumblr Plays Pokemon White 2 - Part 8
((So i actually had to go back and fight a bunch of trainers to get money for more pokeballs to try and catch pokemon with.))
Well hanging out in the lot was a lot of fun but now I think I'll head back down into the sewers and get to the pokemon center. I need to prepare.
Yeah I think he's feeling a little... frustrated. Look its this whole revenge thing, I don't really wanna get into it.
Iris then asks what I'm going to do now, and honestly? While I'm aiming to fight in the gym I think I need to train some first. Get a gas mask, complete a bit more of the pokdedex. Yada yada.
Also I'm actually nearly out of the pokeballs. I've only got, like, four. And three of those I dont wanna use yet.
Guess that means one thing. I gotta fight some trainers for cash.
I start in the sewers. I opt to not use healing items like potions. I'd rather not spend money trying to buy more so instead my team and I are just going to have the train the difficult way by healing at the pokemon center for free. Once we have enough money and balls saved up we can try to fill out more of the pokedex.
Besides I wanna make sure I'm strong enough to beat Burgh and this as good of an excuse as any to train up.
I actually try to avoid most of the wild pokemon, saving up our energy for the trianers.
Turns out one of the trainers I beat is a doctor so i was able to get my pokemon healed up! And immediately after that I found a scientist who gave me a super potion! Dang things are looking up! I found a few items in the sewer I might be able use or sell as well.
Place still reeks though.
Getting curious I choose to check out that gaping hole in the sewers and find myself in a cave system (relic passage) rather than explore further I opt to leave it alone for now and return later.
((I actually completely forgot about Relic passage when making the poll. XD I think I'll include it amongst the potential places to catch mons after we get our eevee encounter once we get enough money for more pokeballs.))
AAAnd that rare bone I found in the sewer sold for fifty bucks

And I spend ALL my money on great balls. I decide it'll be a good idea to head to that little hidden park to start some training.
I wonder around in the grass a bit and run into an Eevee. A friggin EEVEE! A wild one! I can't believe this! Those are insanely rare in Unova!
EVERY trainer wants an eevee!
Bentley! Aries! Do NOT screw this up!
I swap Bentley out for Molly both to take down Petilil sooner, and to avoid Bentleys old habits from kicking in.
Don't look at me like that Bentley you know what you did!
After that it was a matter of being insanely cautious with the damage.
Once I got eevee down to a reasonable health level I decided that now, now was the time to use that Ultra ball I was given back in Aspertia.
Ultra ball dont fail me now!

Ohhhhh he is just so CUTE!
What shall I name him? I mean he was the first pokemon in this whole thing to win, more or less, by a massive landslide. So I feel like I should incorporate that in the name.
I asked my sister what I should name this Eevee and she suggest Pollemachus in reference to him winning the poll. That sounded werid so I was considering Champ but while we were discussing it and even seeing if Pollemachus would fit into the pokemon nickname section (it did not) we wound up coming across the name Pollux. Which apparently means "very sweet" some sources claimed it also meant "crown"? I'm not sure but given this pokemon by a Poll that was absolutely no contest I think it only seems right to give him a name in reference to it.
So after a LOT of debate the little Eevees name became Polux.
And now for the moment of truth.
The nature check.
I spent so much time looking for this Eevee. I can only hope the pokmeon challenge gods look favorably upon me.

What are some aspects of Amphibia that seem obvious but you have not seen that many people talk about?
okay so this is different than the previous question, and im just gonna list a bunch of things in bullet points i wish ppl talked abt more
hop pop’s backstory and the questions it raises. I’ve seen one or two really good posts on this, but not nearly enough.
how well sasha subverts the archetype of the typical queen bee popular mean girl in every possible way, even before she becomes a warrior revolutionary. I feel like I see people talk about this with regards to her gender presentation, but less so in terms of how she’s...not actually all that mean? like, that feels like a really important part of her character to me, so I wish people talked about it more.
how well marcy subverts the archetype of the harmless nerd. anne literally calls her harmless in her official character introduction, and it’s so fascinating how much the show goes out of its way to prove her wrong. people have analyzed marcy to death, but the way her character plays on established tropes and audience expectations is super fascinating to me on a meta level.
obviously, the way class and race inform the text. I’ve already gone into this, but it’s actually extremely weird to me that I don’t see people mention this more often. it’s an integral element of the show.
sort of adding onto the previous point, the fact that the whole “isekai narrative” is being used as a metaphor to explore the feeling of diasporic alienation and issues of identity. the worldbuilding and realism therein is not actually important to the show because the narrative was never meant to be taken at face value. it’s a mythic legend about real people. that’s the magic of it.
how gorgeous the music and backgrounds are! this is just a small thing but i wish it was appreciated more bc the aesthetics of wartwood especially are so lovely to me.
the fact that these girls are all 13 and none of them are bad people, they’re just 13. frankly the idea that people ever disliked sasha is absurd to me. she is a very sympathetic character there is really no reason to consider her a bad person. same with marcy. they are complicated yet well intentioned children! and so is anne. it feels like people gloss over anne’s many flaws because she’s the main character, but she’s hardly perfect either, which is a good thing because it’s what made me love her so much in the first place. I think a lot of fans of this show are teenagers which is why they’re less able to give leeway to these kids, but these are kids, and they should not be held to the standards of adults when discussed. that’s just ridiculous.
how unique and interesting the pacing is. how the blend of episodic and serial allows for a focus on the subtler nuances of character development. I think a lot of people who like this show still aren’t a fan of the pacing, but frankly I think the pacing of this show works strongly in its favor because it’s rare to see a character given so much love and attention as anne boonchuy, and if the show was more plot-driven and less anne-driven I honestly don’t know if I’d like it as much. anne IS the show, and her little, cumulative moments of personal growth are what make it so special.
how there are multiple moments of cannibalism in this show. maybe I just pay attention to different things, I don’t know

Every time I go home I always notice how quiet it is around here.
Positive thing: I had a good time spending the day with my dad, and I ate a lot of good food.
Here's all the good food in question. The ice cream we actually made ourselves using mangoes and milk and whatnot, and it was really good. Even better than store-bought mango ice cream that I've had, I'd say.
After all the talking and eating together I got settled in my room and began watching through the dramas my friend recommended. I don't think any of them were for me, unfortunately. This was something I don't think I realized before, but I'm sensitive to the pacing of shows and stuff, and if it feels even a bit too rushed I can't help but notice it. Another thing was that a lot of them felt so... insincere? Overly jokey? Something like that. Maybe that was part of the rushed feeling I got from them too. When things I consume feel too empty or ironic I just get frustrated. I like to have quiet moments in things I watch, or at the very least a moment to breathe that isn't interrupted by cheesy sound effects or dialogue for the sake of filling silence. I get that the majority of dramas are meant to be fluff or escapism in some way, so maybe the whole of the format isn't for me.
I did like 恋せぬふたり (Loveless Pair), which my friend did not recommend but was just one I had been meaning to try. It's specifically about aroace people which I thought was really cool. Unfortunately episode 3 came with a warning of sexual violence (I don't know a milder translation but basically) so I didn't continue. I did like how clear they were in saying the two main characters were aroace, since I feel like explicit representation like that especially in Japanese media is pretty rare. Maybe I'll go back to it one day if I'm feeling braver.
Back to the whole sincerity thing, after watching through her recommendations and not clicking with any of them I wondered if I had just gotten lucky with 逃げ恥. It does have a lot of silliness in it but it feels grounded and earnest, which I think comes from how it feels like there is something it wants to say beyond just doinking two characters together to get them to kiss. Or maybe my friend's own tastes clash with my own so her recommendations didn't work out because of that. Who knows. Either way I think I need to keep broadening my media-consuming scope.
After getting tired of trying out a bunch of the first episodes of dramas and not liking them, I decided to watch The Farewell since another friend had recommended it. And wow. If it was depth and sincerity and quietness I was seeking, that movie absolutely delivered. I love media that goes into the particulars of a specific situation, in a way that feels like it really wants to explore the dyamics and implications of it. This one was about a Chinese family returning to China to see their dying grandmother, but the grandmother herself doesn't know her illness is terminal, so the family keeps up the lie while trying to be there for her. There's many scenes of just all of them together, not talking about the actual situation, but being the situation, if that makes sense. It was a character study of an entire family through the lens of a 4-ish day trip. I loved the scoring, and the way they framed their shots like the viewer was a part of the scene, and a bunch of other little details that made it feel real. I also am just weak for stories revolving around immigrants and multi-ethnic relationships. Hopefully I can find some more media like it.
