UPDATE I AM STILL THINKING ABOUT THE POTENTIAL DAN AND PHIL TAROT AND @slitsfordan ASKED FOR MY RANT ON IT SO HERE ARE MY THOUGHTS ON CARD SYMBOLISM AS IT RELATES TO DIP AND PIP !!
The Fool - PINOF, particularly PINOF 1. the fool is about new beginnings, pinof 1 is the origin of dnp.
The Magician - superamazingproject. the intro to their collaborative content. the dream they put out into the universe. the seed they planted hoping something would come of it.
The High Priestess - BBC Radio 1. they didn't know when it happened how much would come out of it, they just knew they had to do it. that's intuition baby. that being said whoever said sister daniel you're funny as fuck.
The Empress - DAPG. the empress is about fertility and creation, mf they birthed a whole new channel.
The Emperor - DAPC. to me, if the empress is about birthing new ideas, the emperor is about raising them and giving them structure by which to grow. DAPC is just another in the saga of their collaboration, at this point.
The Hierophant - TABINOF. the hierophant is about tradition and also represents the teacher/student archetype. i think of them kind of like profits bringing the word to the people for the first time lol.
The Lovers - TATINOF. think of any picture of them together on tour and tell me im wrong.
The Chariot - DAPGO. im ngl this one is kind of a space filler for chronology's sake, but them writing a second book was definitely a choice they made that furthered their joint image. they willed that into existence.
Strength - Interactive Introverts. Strength speaks on the bravery and fortitude needed to overcome obstacles. Dan particularly has spoken at length about how this tour was hard for him.
The Hermit - Dan's hiatus.
The Wheel of Fortune - The wheel of fortune is about inevitability of change and the cyclical nature of life. I think this one might be too vague for a direct comparison to a specific event? That being said if you can think of an example of a time they were faced with the inevitability of change I am all ears. Either way drawing this card in line with the rws but with dnp motifs would be fun as fuck
Justice - Justice is about karma, about getting back what you gave. I think of their dynamic as a duo, how they give to each other and get the same energy back. I think generally this card would be more negative, talk about literal justice, but I don't think that applies to them.
The Hanged Man - The hanged man is about sacrifice and surrender. I already said this in previous posts but to me this is Phil— going back in the closet for Dan, staying in London while he went on tour, etc. it's the willingness to let things change how they will because you have faith that no matter how much they change they'll always be a little the same.
Death - the changes themselves. sister daniel is a really good representative of this to me, and of the ways dan- but both of them really- have learned to be more comfortable both with themselves and with us as an audience. it's a change for the better.
Temperance - temperance is about balance, to me the most obvious example is their work/life balance. the value they place on their privacy. the taking weeks off after particularly long stints of work. it's doing what you have to do to make sure this work continues to be fulfilling.
The Devil - Dan and Phil Crafts - Slime (duh lol)
I WILL UPDATE THESE LATER BC IM BUSY BUT ALSO IF YOU HAVE SUGGESTIONS I AM OPEN TO THEM:
The Tower - upheaval
The Star - hope for the future
The Moon - the unconscious
The Sun - success over the unconscious
Judgement - review
The World - conclusion

Soap with an Welsh f!reader? 😩 With him just trying his best to learn her about culture, language and country. Just loving her so much that he'll do anything for her. You can add anything I just want my Welsh representation ‼️
Johnny ''Soap'' Mactavish x Welsh!Reader
a/n: i did research. sort of. still, im sorry if its not perfect :( i also havent written fro johnny before so this is.. new
mentions: Fluff, Johnny's an arse, but it's cute
''So, yer basically speaking Elvish, that's it?'' A Scottish voice snaps you from your thoughts. A Scottish voice that belongs to a man you'd very much like to punch and slap. Knowing Johnny was.. dreadful, but even more so now that he seemingly discovered Welsh was the inspiration for Tolkien's Elvish. Your culture wasn't something you spoke about often in the group, mostly because you didn't think any of the members would bother with it.
But then there's Johnny, who seems to be almost too into it. He was constantly at your side, teasing and asking about it. You were wrong, however, to assume that it held ill intent. He was head over heels. Totally smitten. With you, the way you looked, the way you acted.. Ofcourse he was going to try and get to know you. Despite your annoyance, he didn't let up. He'll get what he wants eventually.
''Not really Elvish then, Bonnie?'' He asks, leaning to you in the booth of the bar. Fuck, that nickname too.. You had to look it up the first time he called you that, thinking he was calling you by someone else's name.
''Not really, Johnny.'' You grumble in response, downing the last of your drink with hopes that it may numb the irritation and secret attraction for him. Sure, he was a cock, but he also had this irresistible aura around him that was intoxicating somehow. It made you want to linger around him, so you did just that with the hopes it wouldn't be too obvious.
''So it's just inspired it, then, lass? Come on, talk to me.'' He presses, causing you to huff and shift towards him. ''Yes. It's just inspired. But it's a bit annoying because that's all people talk about when I tell them i'm Welsh.'' You mutter, which causes his smile to twitch slightly. Shit. Bad move, Johnny.
He clears his throat, scooting a little closer to you. ''Alright. Tell me somethin' interesting, then.'' Johnny says with a nod, staring at you. The way he's giving his undivided attention is making you slightly flustered, especially with the way he's looking at you. Good grief..
You move again, your hands placing around on your thighs as you think of something to tell him. Eventually you let out a little breath, ''Um, well, the language is very pretty. Cariad means darling, for example.'' Why am I telling him about nicknames? ''Uh, blodyn means flower.''
As you speak, Johnny's nodding along, seemingly very interested. ''We also have these things called love spoons, and they're just spoons with symbols engraved in them. It's like a token of love, sort of.. My mum always got me ones with flowers on it. It means love. It's kind of silly, but it's sweet.'' You say, smiling fondly at the memory. When you briefly glance up at him, he's practically swooning as he looks at you. ''Sounds adorable, lass.'' His hand rests on the free spot between you two, inching a little closer to your thigh. You smile softly, tilting your head. So he is actually interested. ''Uh, yeah, it's.. yeah.'' You reply, slightly unsure how to continue the conversation. Awkward silence washes over the two of you until Johnny speaks up again.
''So, you plannin' anything after this?'' He asks, his other arm gently snaking around your shoulders. You aren't sure if it's the drinks you've had, or that Johnny just looks so damn good that causes you to lean into him, shaking your head. ''Mm, alright, lass. How about we watch a little movie after, aye?'' His other hand places on your thigh, giving a soft squeeze.
''Only if ya want to, though, No pressure.'' He adds quickly behind it, not wanting you to feel pressured– especially when intoxicated.
You nod, leaning your thighs over to his side, as if telling him it's okay. ''Sure. Aslong as you don't talk about that fuckin' Elvish again.'' You reply, and let out a little noise when Johnny's hand wraps around your waist to pull you flush against him. ''Or what, Bonnie?'' He teases, looking down at you. ''I'll shut you up.'' You blurt, realizing just how wrong it sounds until after you've said it. He snickers, his hands toying at the edge of your shirt. ''Oh, yeah? You will?''
You give an annoyed grumble in response, feeling your face heat up. That wasn't how you meant that comment. At all. You can feel Johnny lean in a little, his breath hitting your ear. ''Shut me up then, lass.''
You definitely did when you got back.

What would be some inkfish specific ways of showing platonic/romantic affection?
man im super ready to go to sleep right now (half asleep) but i also really want to answer this (i saw it pop up like 5 seconds ago) because super good SUPER GOOD topic i love it VERY VERY MUCH. my thoughts are not going to be coherent on this because ive thought about it varying amounts
first things first color matching is super prominent and important. It's not necessarily even an affection thing, it just marks unity of some kind at its base symbolism. But it is definitely used to show affection either by completely mirroring another person's color (down to the gradient). Typically in a romantic case, people will shift their full-time main color to include that of their significant other's... it's not really color SHARING exactly, but it's such a signifier that the other person is always present in their mind. It's a distinct way to honor somebody to make space in your personal identifying color to include theirs. kind of like the equivalent to tattooing someone's name on you pretty much, just less permanent
Tumblr media Tumblr media
topical perfect example. The inclusion of colors like this might be subtle but it's kind of obvious when you see people side-by-side and typically every color in a color gradient that inklings decide to wear has SOME sort of symbolism (even if the symbolism is "i like that color it looks awesome").
Second thing for romantic affection (or platonic if you don't care about being romantic to kiss your besties). i don't think inkfish would kiss. At least not like humans do. They have huge beaks and teeth on their tongues and nothing about that works and on top of all that most of them have some potency of venom. You may ask "okay, surely there's an alternative?" Yeah.
This is kind of a two in one actually because this is kind of a cuddling entry too, but tentacle hugging or "tangling". Granted, this really only works with tentacles long enough to do it with, which is less common with the new cool hip hairstyles that a lot of youngsters like to get, not even getting started with the torn up and sliced styles. But it's pretty similar to holding hands or hugging (both things which inklings ALSO do, but with tentacles it's much more intimate). Holding and tangling tentacles together is very much a stand-in for cuddling, if you get suckers involved it's VERY MUCH kissing. (You even get sucker hickeys in this case a lot of the time.)
Cuddling in swim form is also a whole thing because you can REALLY get tangled with somebody that way. Other minor things? very gentle nibbling with one's beak would be one, which is also a big show of trust because those beaks can tear flesh.
yeah I don't have a lot of ideas or input on this subject but i hope this was something. basically inkfish are a very touchy type and tentacles are a BIG deal. (maybe for this reason it's also common for asexual and/or aromantic inkfish to wear short and/or otherwise wildly cut haircuts.)

DAY 5: JANUARY 31, 2024 (i got to start reading more consistently.)
STATS: read for ~3 hrs pages read: 1052-1359. 307 pgs. act 4! slur count: 8 + 1 = 9 (john r slur on 1 of his defaced posters) silly count: 11 + 0 = 11 (i might have missed some. to be honest) piss count: 1/3
THOUGHTS: today started with john's alchemizing spree! i really like the alchemy even though i can NOT understand how the binary and codes quite work. john does though. johns really smart about alchemy in sburb specifically. this section also has a lot of funny john faces. i love this guy
FINALLY the end of dave and bros strife! jesus! been 2 sessions sicne it started! i said this last time but i think its SO INTERESTING how bro doesnt cut or stab dave in any way during the strife. they clash and lil cal gets torn up and daves sword gets 1/2ed and daves SYMBOL gets scratched but when hussie shows dave after the fight hes winded and bruised and battered but hes NOTABLY NOT BLOODY! obviously being bruised cus youre FIGHTING! WITH YOUR DAD! is bad and your dad (bro) is a criminal but. man. how much restraint was bro USING. to be SO PRECISE! did he have to choose between slashing dave and slashing cal in that split second? why else would he possibly have slashed cal? for paradox reasons? i really like dirk strider
the unofficial homestuck collection website is bugging out SO BAD for me. for so many flashes today the music just did not play. it SUCKS! but its fine i just play the music in another tab. i hope they fix that but i know its not priority
i really like the few dave logs i read today. dave is sooooo sad puppy on the other side of a cracked door that sees you and wants to get in the room but cant figure out how to push open the door so he just whines. "hello" "what are you doing" "man where are you" "are you there" he is so cute. in contrast the other dave log today was DAVE AND TAVROS!!!! HOORAY FOR TAVROS! and dave in this one is really funny hes so nonchalant and like "no man. if you want to have sex with a 13 yr old boy okay dude. im on board. time and place." and tavros is like UM! NO! IM GOOD! HAHA! }:) ! they are so funny. the striders are SO internet troll. dave does it flawlessly
KANAYA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I LOVE KANAYA! SHES MY FAVORITE TROLL! shes so awesome in the kanaya/rose log she is so funny. start talking to this girl like "humans cant understand time travel when its really so simple youre all kind of dumb" and ending with "hey we should be friends". i literally love her
EXILES! not much happened with the exiles. introduced to aimless renegade. what a cop. pa harley heart! thanks for your guns pa!
THE FLASH WHEN ROSE ENTERS THE GAME IS SO COOOOOL!!!!!!!!! i really really like it unfortunately the sound didnt work so all the beats didnt hit quite right but they hit ENOUGH. SO COOL! I LOVE ROSE!!!! theres so much going on all the time for that girl. i love you rose
INTERMISSION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i really like the intermission i think its so fun trying to parse what the hell is happening. i have GOT to read problem sleuth because so many of the things i find funny are straight up just problem sleuth bits
hussie averting the readers expectations with the like You have a deck of cards. ==> play solitaire With what cards? Dumbass? Fuck off. You only have your WAR CHEST. i think this is hussie like softdropping his rivalry with his audience. it starts with silly banter and then hes like im going to make a character representing the fandom and im going to kill her off (calliope)
the felt are SO COOL! if anyone knows all the pun names for them lmk. i only know a few obvious ones.
the intermission is SO gory. theres so much blood and death and guns and knives. like ok dude i get youre in mafia gangs or whatever but cool it on the blood and yucky faces! yeesh! there is also more crude jokes in it than normal i think. maybe cus these are real adults with pornography in their briefcases than like 13 yr olds. "jack king off" "you beat it(your heart) pretty often" "fist full of penis" etc
you kjnow what drives me crazy. the ACTUAL REAL TIMELINE of the intermission. or at least what it means for the rest of the comic. obviously the intermission is foreshadowing (esp when slick gets his eye and arm cut off; mentioning lord english; etc) but like. its MORE. when i first read homestuck i was under the impression that the intermission was just some other timeline in some universe. granted i dont remember slicks eye and arm getting nixed or karkat vantas reveal or lord english mention or anything that foreshadows anything. but NO! its NOT some other timeline! but it IS another universe. its ALTERNIA!!!!!!!!!!!
the story of jack noir (spades slick) as i know it is as follows: jack noir spawns in derse ==> commits a crime (probably shittalking the queen) ==> gets exiled to... um. somewhere. ==> i assume he meets karkat here? and stabs him. and karkats blood is revealed and then theyre friends ==> slick (now scurrilous straggler) is left on the green moon? exiled in rags ==> he builds a city ==> the felt's mansion is there also. they form gangs and become rivals ==> intermission starts; midnight crew infiltrates lord english's lair to get the vault prizes ==> slick goes in the vault and begins commanding karkat. if im wrong about any of this correct me im so curious
i really like clubs deuce and diamonds droog. i wish crowbar was in the intermission more. clover is just like nagito komaeda. trace and fin are insaaaane. i wish i knew more about the felt
ACT 4! GAME!!!!! game on lowas. its really cool i didnt get to play it my first readthrough. love the salamanders and love the captchalogue nonsense. it is so fun. thats all for today folks

DUDE ABOUT THE SUPER READER ONE U SHOULD TOTALLY MAKE IT INTO A FULL FIC LIKE IM SO INLOVE WITH THE IDEAYDUDUXYXUCJ
A/N: I just saw this in my inbox and YESSS, I've started the To My Hope series and this is finally the funeral scene!!! This was the scene I've been waiting to get to - Riddler meeting Hope 😍 enjoy! This is pretty long but I really wanted to include everything 😂💚
To My Hope; You Came
Words: 2336
Tumblr media
"I was Hoping that you'd come last night," Bruce says as you drive to the funeral, smirking slightly at his name joke, to which you roll your eyes with a light scoff. "But I understand. It's a lot to take in."
"I just couldn't face it," you tell him with a shrug. "The person who's supposedly obsessed with me... you saw the news, about Pete."
You couldn't bring yourself to go with The Batman and Gordon last night, to look at the scene of Pete Savage's death, left by the Riddler. You were too distracted with the letter, the Riddler himself when he appeared on your TV screen... absolutely everything. But you're Hope. You'll manage, like you always do.
"Well, Pete's not a good cop," Bruce states, and you frown, listening. "Looks like he got greedy. I think he was in on the drops business. The Riddler's targeting the corrupt, especially people to do with that case. There are more photos," he continues, passing them to you and glancing at the car windows, their reflective film blocking out any random, prying eyes from outside. You shuffle through the photos with a sigh.
"I managed to get someone in the lounge," he adds, "to the club below it. Colson, the DA, he was there. Talking about an informant on the Maroni case. A rat."
"A rat," you repeat slowly, and Bruce nods. "Okay, that kind of makes sense, what with the Riddler putting rats in that cage yesterday..."
"I got a card," he responds, and you can see the dull annoyance in his gaze immediately after he mentions it. "Another riddle. 'Follow the maze until you find the rat. Bring him into the light, and you'll find where I'm at."
"Bring him into the light?"
"We'll work on it," Bruce assures you. "I, um, I met a girl from the Iceberg Lounge," he adds. "Selina. You'll get on well with her. She's friends with the blonde girl from the pictures with the late mayor. She talked to Colson."
You smile with a nod, giving the photos back, the frowning as you notice his hesitation to mention something else.
"Okay... What is it?"
He pulls out an envelope from his pocket, handing it to you. You bite your lip as you stare at the familiar handwriting from Mitchell's house, the angel card.
To My Hope
You quickly pull the card out of the envelope, and stay frozen in your seat as your eyes trace the words on its cover. It's another old fashioned love cartoon, with two silhouetted figures holding hands, standing under a large green heart with curly white words written inside.
'I HAVE ALWAYS LOVED YOU,
'I ALWAYS WILL,
'LOVED YOU YESTERDAY,
'LOVE YOU STILL.'
You open the card up properly to see the same riddle The Batman got, but the obvious difference between his and yours is the faint, messy hearts drawn in the background of the writing in pencil. Bruce looks away, annoyed.
"I don't like the idea of him thinking of you like that. Stay close, okay? I know you can handle yourself, but this is different."
You smile at Bruce fondly, tucking the card away in your jacket pocket. "Alright, worryguts."
Chanting and clamouring can be heard clearly from outside, as Bruce Wayne's car drives to the entrance of the church. As you peer out the window, you can see a group of people chanting "No more lies!" and holding up boards with the Riddler's question mark symbol sprayed on it, signs held up saying 'OUR DAY OF JUDGEMENT'. Bruce stares too, retreating into silence as he steps out, going over to your side to give you a hand, and choosing to keep it in his.
Reporters are quick to clamour around you, cameras flashing.
"Is that Bruce Wayne?"
"Who's the girl with him?"
"Mr Wayne, is that your girlfriend?!"
You bite back a smile, looking up at him. "Told you."
He shakes his head at you, but he's not seriously annoyed. The amusement fades as you look over at a car, where Falcone himself steps out, a young woman beside him. Bruce follows them, pulling you with him, and you frown, trying to tug him back before one of his men notice.
"Hey, hey! Give us a wide berth here, would you, slick?" a bodyguard jumps in, and Falcone turns, the girl looking back at you both.
Falcone calms them down in a second, reassuring them of who Bruce Wayne is, about knowing his father. You avoid eye contact with the man, instead, your eyes wander to the group of protesters with Riddler gear at the entry's barricaded area.
"Come on," Bruce's voice draws your attention back, and you go on inside. Bella Rel greets Bruce and you almost as soon as you get in, and you let her pull him away, smiling at the look he gives you as you scan the large number of people there to pay their respects.
"What good's a safety net that doesn't catch anybody?" A man behind the barricades indoors mutters to himself, and you look over at him with a small frown. "Didn't help my daughter when she needed it, I can tell you that. The guy was just another rich scum-sucker. He got what he deserved."
His eyes meet yours suddenly, and then it's his turn to frown. "Hey, don't I know you? I've seen you somewhere-"
A hand on your shoulder makes you flinch, and you're met with Bruce, who glances at the man before leading you away.
The faint music of Ave Maria in the background somehow made you uneasy, and you glanced around at the mayor's son and the people... before your attention was immediately caught.
Panicked, muffled screams sound from outside, along with the roaring of an engine and crashing sounds. Bruce grips your hand tightly, stepping in front of you protectively as the noise grows louder, drawing out the conversation and singing from within the church. You follow Bruce's stare as he looks up at a balcony, where the silhouette of a man stands calmly, peering down at the scene. Your breath catches in your throat as your fingers trace the card from your pocket, and the loud smash of the breaking of the paned doors makes you jump.
People scatter screaming to get away from the big black car, as it speeds down the aisle. Bruce shoves you to the side, making you lose your balance but miss the car's route as he sprints towards the boy, pushing him out the way and rolling over as they stumble. The car crashes into the thick, poled walls, and when you look up again, the man's figure is gone.
The GCPD flock around the car, bashed up and spray painted in white with lettering. Gordon yells at the driver to get out of the car... and when he does, you close your eyes in disbelief.
It's Colson, duct tape around his mouth muffling his cries, and attaching a phone to the palm of his hand. He's still there when you open them, dried blood trickled down his forehead as his words are muffled under the tape. A large, clunky collar is around his neck, and when someone points it out, everyone screams. The phone rings, and another chorus of screams sounds, the ID simply stating that it's an unknown number.
Colson holds up the phone, showing the envelope taped onto his shirt.
To My Hope & The Batman
The guests clear out instantly, and you look over your shoulder at Bruce, who looks straight back at you, nodding.
You've never gotten changed into Hope so quickly.
You've never wanted to stay hidden away in your apartment so much.
Night falls over Gotham as Batman insists you two go out to answer later in the day, the police now surrounding the building, sending a robot in to scan the bomb and survey the scene. The Batman stays close to you as you walk side by side back into the church, and Colson looks up at you with wide, tired eyes. Batman takes the tape off his mouth, and Colson gasps, shaking his head and apologising over and over.
"Please, he made me do it," Colson insists tearfully. "He told me if I didn't do exactly what he said he'd kill me, I'm so sorry!"
"Looks like a combination lock," Batman observes the collar, and you nod.
"Can't we just cut it off?"
"Not if you want to keep your head."
Colson sighs shakily, and you take the envelope off his shirt, pulling out the card with a 60s style blonde woman holding an oversized telephone.
"In these troubling times, never forget," you read quietly, opening it up, "I'm only a phone call away. Answer."
Colson raises his hand as he offers you the phone, and you glance at Batman in confirmation. He nods, and you reach out to answer it, tapping the green icon on the screen.
The same room from last night's news is in the video call's background, heavy breathing close to the camera, as the masked man leans into the frame.
"You came."
"Who are you?" Batman questions calmly.
"Me? I'm nobody," the Riddler breathes, "I'm just an instrument, here to unmask the truth about this cesspool we call a city."
"Unmask?"
"Yes," the Riddler agrees, his eyes gliding from the Batman to you. You swear you can see them soften as he stares at the screen from his side, his breathing picking up again.
"Oh, Hope..." he whispers, "you look so beautiful up close... did you like the cards I sent you?"
Batman tenses beside you, and you open your mouth before closing it, your mind completely blank of any way to answer.
"Let's do this together, okay?" The Riddler continues. "I've been trying to reach you. You're both a part of this too, lovely."
"How are we a part of this?" Batman asks.
"You'll see," Riddler responds darkly, adjusting his camera as he sits down. "Say hello to my followers. We're live. They've heard a lot about Hope, here... and they're here to watch our little trial. At the moment, the man across from you, Mr Colson... is dead! But-"
"Jesus, can we get somebody out here, this psycho's gonna kill me!" Colson interrupts in pure terror, and you hear the Riddler sigh.
"Wait a minute- SHUT UP! You deserve to be dead after what you did- you hear me? YOU HEAR ME?!"
"Okay, okay," Colson whimpers, and you watch the screen in shock as the Riddler's groan turns into a hyper laugh, his face close to the camera.
"I'm giving you a chance," the Riddler tells him, before jerking away from the camera dramatically. "No one ever gave me a chance. Now. Ever since I was a child, I've always loved little puzzles. For me, they are a retreat, from the horrors of our world. Maybe... they can bring some comfort to you too, Mr Colson."
"You want me to do puzzles?" Colson questions, and the RIddler agrees excitedly.
"Three riddles in two minutes. You give me the answers, and I'll give you the code for the lock - do you understand?"
Colson agrees nervously, and the shrill beep of the bomb makes huim jump and whimper in fright.
"Riddle number one! It can be cruel, poetic, or blind, but when it's denied, it's violence you may find."
"W-wait, could you repeat that? Cruel... poetic...?"
"Justice," you pipe up, and Colson turns to you desperately.
"Huh?"
"The answer, it's justice!"
Colson repeats it, and the Riddler confirms the word happily.
"Yes! Justice! Isn't she clever?" He coos adoringly at you, and you watch in uncertainty. "And you," he turns his attention back to Colson, "were supposed to be an arm of justice in this city, along with the late mayor and police commissioner, were you not, Mr Colson?"
"Yes, yes, of course, of course," Colson agrees quickly.
"Riddle number two," the Riddler carries on gleefully. "If you are justice, please do not lie. What is the price for your blind eye?"
"Price?" Colson repeats cluelessly.
"Bribes," Batman repeats, and Colson tries to repeat it.
"No, he wants to know how much it cost for you to turn your back," you clarify.
Colson hesitates in despair.
"Fifty-eight seconds!" The Riddler yells impatiently.
"Look, how much was it?!" you demand worriedly.
"Nothing!"
"How much!" The Batman raises his voice.
"Ten grand," Colson caves in, "Ten Gs a month, I get a monthly payment just not to prosecute certain cases!"
"What cases?"
"He didn't ask me that, come on! Ten grand!"
The Riddler laughs in amusement. "Okay, okay - don't lose your head, Mr Colson. Just one more to go before your time runs out. Last riddle! Since your justice is so select, please, tell us which vermin you're paid to protect?"
"The rat," Batman tells him instantly. "The informant you all protect from the Salvatore Maroni case."
Colson's face goes pale. "How do you know about that?!"
"What's his name?" You ask, and Colson shakes his head, as the Riddler announces the twenty seconds left.
"No."
"He's going to kill you, Colson!" You point out with round eyes.
"I'm a dead man either way," Colson replies, and repeats the statement as Batman grabs hold of him. "If I go out this way, it's just me, but if I give over that name, I have family, people I love... he'll kill them too,"
"Who will?"
"People are watching-"
"What people?!"
"It's so much bigger than you can imagine," Colson says miserably, "it's the whole system."
"Five seconds! I'll see you soon, my Hope - I love you! Goodbye!"
The deafening book of the bomb exploding cuts off Colson's pleas for mercy, and the Batman jumps in front of you as it goes off, shielding you from the damage as you're both blown back. Your breaths are shaky and uneven as you hear echoed, fading voices, and the voice of the Riddler, before darkness consumes your mind.

hey, so i still havent read knifetrick yet, but i saw the post you reblogged about it being about capitalism's treatment of disabled people. im aware that this is just one interpretation of your work, but did you consciously make decisions about what messages to send within your story? did you purposefully include imagery or motifs or references or anything else to create a particular theme or idea?
im wondering because im making my own story, and im curious about what others put into theirs. i have a few key ideas i want to send with it, so i'm trying to tie all my characters and their arcs and the symbols and everything in my story to it. my brand of autism tends towards the "everything MUST have a logic to it!" and this is an obvious influence on it, but i still also think it's worth putting a lot of thought into it because theyre ideas i really care about. i want curious readers to be able to look into my story and see how it all ties together, and i want to impart messages of compassion onto my general audience as well. i think that all art has messages within it, whether personal or otherwise, and by being aware of what those are you can create a stronger and more cohesive story. at least thematically. if that is what someone wants to do, of course.
i know knifetrick is a story you started for fun. there is absolutely value in that (in your own joy) and i dont think art without intentional purposes or messages is inferior in any way. but did you ever get an idea for an overarching message in your mind, and implement it? its cool if you didnt, or if you did but dont want to say what it is too btw lol. im kinda just looking for the experience & thoughts another author had with their own thing. (i am very nervous sending this ask. i hope i dont sound like im jumping the gun.)
do not feel bad for asking this question, i'm always down to talk about my written works, even if it takes me a bit to collect my thoughts and figure out a response. yes, the truth is i went into knifetrick from the start with a lesson/moral i wanted to explore and teach. a fun fact about me is that i have several younger siblings, who are often being taught things i personally don't agree with. having conversations with them about what is really "right" or "moral" is awkward and not really doable. but stories and characters have always been a good and safe way for us to have this discussion-- why did this character do that thing, what makes this bad guy bad, and so on. this is why with writing i don't just like to tell a story, but i also like to teach a lesson. as patronizing as that sounds, i kind of just think it's pleasing when stories have a good moral behind them. although they don't need to for me to enjoy them. but back to the actual topic, yes. i did intentionally choose to explore the idea of capitalism's failure of certain groups of people in my story. that is what the main plot is actually wrapped around-- there's the obvious struggle with the main character, ran. he is physically and mentally disabled, he is treated differently than his peers. in a way he is fed from a young age the idea that the only way he can be considered equal to everyone else is to have a use to other people; to be the hardest working member of the order. his society encourages this worldview so that they can take advantage of him, but they don't actually care about him at all. they would discard him if he stopped being useful to them. the second example of this is the other main character, jackie. jackie's society also failed to take care of him-- he was orphaned, and then immediately lacked a support system of any kind, personal or governmental. he turned to a life of crime to make ends meet and repress his emotions, but all that did was eventually make his severe depression worse and manifest itself in a lot of anger issues and lashing out. by the time ran meets jackie, he's attempting to turn over a new leaf and take this opportunity he's been given to make an honest living; jackie cares a great deal about the people around him. the missing children are failed by society in the fact that they go missing in the first place, and nobody has bothered to try and find them (although the blame for that rests mainly on watson's shoulders, seeing as he tricked the king into thinking that was being solved). scoots and clem are failed by society as well- scoots is denied the job she actually wants to have due to her disability, and they are very poor. obviously this is made worse when clem goes missing, and since no one else is doing anything, scoots stops working to look for her sister. possibly the most obvious examples i can think of are maia snail and laggius maximus. maia's children are both autistic, with one of the two showing much more severe symptoms than the other. she's dealt with this in the way she best can as a mother, which is give them things they can comfortably work on to get their energy out and be helpful without having to do anything they don't like. society fails them as well, in that laggius is killed in the pit. but the more important part of their story is something snail tells ran: "i would have loved my brother even if he was never useful a day in his life, because he deserves it". essentially all throughout knifetrick, especially through ran, we are shown this idea of usefulness as equivalent to worth; i.e. how capitalism teaches us to view ourselves. we are shown how faulty of a system that is through the various characters. eventually ran realizes that he does not actually have to do anything useful to be worthy of existence, comfort, or love, and that is the sort of “end moral” of the narrative. ran ditches the council, showing that he knows his own worth and refuses to be tied to people who only ever hurt him, and then jackie helps the king start to reform subbin’s systems so that less people will fall through the cracks as he did.
so yes, that is essentially how i explored the idea of capitalism failing disabled people through knifetrick. there’s likely more stuff that i forgot but that’s what i remember off my head right now. anything anyone else sees in knifetrick about this topic is probably fair as well, death of the author and all that. this is what i intended while writing but other people might have seen more things in other characters that i didn’t think of too hard.
i hope that helps.
(bonus: firefox completely froze while i was at the end of this ask and made me fear for my fucking life. it took so much waiting and minimizing the program before i could safely save this to my drafts and then close firefox. terrifying.)

Name Symbolism in Gone
Sam Temple
Samuel's story in the Bible is actually kind of interesting.* He was the first of the prophets and the last of the judges (not a king, no idea where MG got that from), promised to God before he was even born and obedient to Him until the moment he died. He appointed two kings of Israel: King Saul, who was eventually diagraced, and the humble King David**, though he died before David was actually made king.
Does this mean anything in relation to the Sam Temple we know and love? I don't know. It could be alluding to Sam's more hands-off approach in the later books, but more likely MG just picked a random name from the Hebrew Bible because Jewish(TM).
*Disclaimer: I am an atheist who was raised by an atheist who was also raised by an atheist. I know nothing about the Bible, or really any religion for that matter. My information regarding this may not be entirely accurate. Also, I may explain Bible stuff that's common knowledge to you because it's all new to me. This is not me being stupid or talking down to you. Thank you.
**Random bolding helps me focus. Ditto for all the bright colors. Sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.***
***footnoting my own writing is really really fun.
Caine Soren / "David Temple"
Caine's name symbolism is more obvious. Cain, humanity's first murderer, who killed his own brother with a rock. Most likely this name was chosen because it sounded cool and edgy while also alluding to his connection with Sam. I do wonder what was going through Caine's adoptive parents' heads when they named him. Eh, white people gonna white people.
Caine's last name is kind of interesting. It's of Scandinavian descent (sources differ on what specifically, most likely Norwegian or Danish) and means "stern, strict, severe". It's particularly interesting to me that this is the family name. Perhaps alluding to the Soren family's attitude toward their adopted son? I guess we'll never know.
King David (the same David who slew Goliath) was a harpist brought to King Saul by Samuel. He grew up to be a great general, and Saul grew paranoid that David was plotting to kill them. To simplify things: David defeated Saul and became King, had an affair with a married woman, killed her husband, and had a son with her (Solomon).
What significance does this have to Caine's story? None that I can see. I think that Connie gave him a good, strong name in hopes that he would grow up to be good and strong. Maybe Caine was a particularly small or weak child and so she named him after David, the boy who defeated a giant and became King. But that’s all conjecture. Again, the most likely explanation is that MG just plucked a random name from the Hebrew Bible because Jewish(TM).
Drake Merwin
Drake's name is actually really funny. Drake means "dragon" or "snake" and Merwin means either "mariner" or "friend of the sea". I choose to believe that this is a reference to his Whip Arm (because it. it looks like a snake,, perhaps even a sea serpent?). If it is, then it's hilarious and MG is a comedic genius. If it isn't, then it's a hell of a coincidence.
Diana Ladris
As far as I can tell, the name "Ladris" doesnt exist. MG made it up. It may have faintly Greek or Italian origins, which makes sense as Diana was the Roman goddess of the moon and fertility (possibly the Roman interpretation of Artemis? Idk im not a historian I just had a Percy Jackson phase). I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be a reference to Diana's precociousness. At least she wasn’t named Mary! Speaking of which...
Mary Terrafino
Yeah, Mary's is pretty obvious. Mother Mary, Martyr Mary, etc. As far as I can tell Terrafino is of Italian origin, but I can't find a meaning.
Astrid Ellison
So the name Astrid itself comes from Old Norse and means "divinely beautiful". I don't know if this was on purpose but I believe Astrid's name works on three levels: first, referencing her religiosity; second, sounding similar to "asteroid" and thus alluding to her power (that MG completely forgot about after the first book :')); and third, referencing Astrid Hofferson, who just so happens to both look very similar to our Astrid Ellison (white teen girl with blonde hair, blue eyes, and a ferocious personality) and share a name with her.
I don't believe Ellison has any special secret meaning, but it comes from an Old Welsh name meaning "kind, benevolent" which I think is nice :)
Peter "Little Pete" Ellison
Similarly to Astrid, I'm not quite sure if the name Peter has any special meaning. The name itself means "stone", and if we follow MG's trend of using Biblical names, then it might be a reference to Saint Peter. It's a bit of a stretch, but this could be a reference to Little Pete going metaphysically toe-to-toe with the Gaiaphage from page one, possibly even before the FAYZ (Peter was the first disciple that Jesus revealed himself to). It could even be a reference to his death: martyred at the hands of a mad tyrant (Peter was crucified by Nero).
Edilio Escobar
Idk if it means anything particularly but Edilio's name is so poetic. It's Greek and means "he who is like a statue". I'm 95% sure MG just picked a random Latino-sounding name but damn he was so right with this one. Edilio: so perfect, so tragic. Like a statue.
Lana Arwen Lazar
I also really like that he has name alliteration, it makes him sound like a superhero (as he deserves!). I'm pretty sure the only other character that has that is Brianna*.
*EDIT: And Lana!
We know that Lana's first & middle names are a reference to comic book characters, but not enough people talk about her last name. In the Bible, Lazarus was brought back to life by Jesus--but considering that Lana's parents are apparently giant nerds, this is probably not a reference to the Bible but to the "Lazarus pit". In DC comics, Lazarus pit is basically a giant pit of mysterious green ooz that brings people back to life. Its side effects? White hair and green eyes.* So Lana's last name may be alluding to the Gaiaphage and the hold it has over her: it killed her and brought her back to life, but it changed her. Considering the Gaiaphage has brought people back to life before, it's not too far-fetched.
*Disclaimer: I know this because of fanfiction. It may not be entirely accurate.
Charles "Orc" Merriman
Orc's name obviously has a lot of symbolism behind it. First he's figuratively seen as a monster, then he's literally seen as a monster. Throughout the series we continuously see this dichotomy between "Orc"--the bully, brute, drunkard, rock monster--and "Charles"--the child in desperate need of help.
Pretty sure his last name was just MG having a laugh since this kid is anything but "merry".
Dekka Talent
Dekka the. The. Don't make me say it.
Brianna Berenson
Howard Bassem
Brianna means something like "good, strong, noble" which tracks. Berenson just means "son of Ber" and I can't find a meaning for that so idk.
EDIT: Brianna's name having alliteration is probably on purpose, since it makes her sound more superhero-y.
It rhymes with coward lmao
Bassem is an Arabic name meaning "smile". I'd have to check and see exactly what book his surname is mentioned in, but honestly the first thing I thought of when I saw it was The Paragraph(TM).*
*idk what it is word-for-word but it's smth like "Howard just looked up at me with that crooked smile of his and said 'I'm always behind you, big guy'".
Duck Zhang
He just wanted a pool :(
Hunter Lefkowitz
His name is Hunter and he. he hunts.
Lefkowitz may or may not mean "lion" and if it does then :(
All the other characters' names either don't have a meaning that I can see (i.e, Albert, Brittney, Quinn, etc.) or have a very obviously stated meaning (i.e, Gaia, Sanjit, etc.).

okay so i rewatched the batman for like the 5th time last night / this morning and i was having too many thoughts to put them all as a letterboxd comment so here are all my little semi connected ramblings on the film
starting off strong with right at the start the drophead guy that tried to rob the convenience store, its just so interesting to me that he was scared of the batman even when he wasnt there and so he ran back into the street and got hit by a police car but the police just yelled at him like they didnt try to stop him or anything -- metaphor for how the batman is offering solutions and providing suspects for the police and stuff but theyre too corrupt to do anything about it ? maybe
it’s the whole system -- just that quote is so good, i should remember who said it considering i literally watched the film 2 hours ago i think it was gil but again super good line just encompassing the fact that the gotham justice system does not offer justice, it is corrupt down to its core and it is failing the people
bruce wayne my blorbo this is just a point about how smart he is and like he just catches on to things but its interesting because he can understand how the riddlers brain works also when bruce punched jim and then jim was like you couldve pulled that punch and bruce was like i did he is so im just kind of obsessed with the fact that he trains for this and its just interesting anyway point about my poor little meow meow over back to analysis
the good cop batshit cop contrasted with brains and brawn -- bruce and jim work together well, they bounce ideas off eachother especially in that scene with the penguim and the way when jim pretended to side with his captain (??? i cant remember) bruce was like et tu? and then that contrasted with batman and the riddler the way riddler thinks hes working with bruce because they both understand a fundamental aspect of eachother and sure bruce is on the same wavelength as him sometimes but its only to track him down and riddler just completely does not realise
when alfred intercepts the assassination attempt and the card reads see you in hell, i feel like that wouldve twisted the knife even more; im not 100% familiar with the original deaths of martha + thomas but the whole senseless crime thing kind of echoes here, like all the other cards to the batman had a cypher or a clue or something but this is just senseless hatred that has no obvious lead for bruce to chase up
he mindmaps, i just like that its fun its fresh hes just like me fr
the way bruce and the riddler are tied together, like in the small things with the diaries but also theyre obviously both orphans and they can understand eachother, they were both born out of tragedy and that was the renewal fund and thomas + marthas deaths, where bruce was left without a mother or father alone in the world (ignoring alfred, as bruce did) the riddler was left without hope, they both use fear, though the batman uses it as a deterrant whereas the riddler uses it as inspiration and almost thrives off it
the way bruce misses the tucker, the carpet tool, showing that even if he fights for the city, even if he walks its streets, he is still a billionaire in a bat suit and there will be experiences and little things that he does not know and that shape his personality and the way he solves crimes
the way the batman begins with the whole i am vengeance thing but comes to realise that he needs to be a symbol of hope, someone for people to fall back on as he ends in the movie, the realisation as he hears his words come from someone wanting to cause only pain and immediatly sacrificing himself by cutting the electric thingy and falling into the water just seconds later

How would you classpect Omori characters?
IM SO GLAD I CAN TALK ABOUT THIS!!! okay i’m putting a tldr at the start but warning for long post ahead of my reasoning (this is very much so me rambling) — also apologies for answering this ask so late ive spent the last like . 4 days thinking about this
sunny: mage of void
basil: sylph of life
mari: seer of heart
kel: heir of hope
hero: page of heart
aubrey: maid of rage
explanations under the cut !!!!
starting off with sunny ofc:
im gonna be so real i do Not have an explanation of why i chose mage . it just made sense in my head !!! i think it is a fun little interesting parralel to mari having the passive version of the knowledge class,, as for aspect,, i feel like void is pretty self explanatory. idk! i dont have much to say for this one but trust me it made sense in my head,!! i would like to hear if anyone else has a sunny god tier headcanon cuz yeah this is the one i am least confident in tehe
alright basil i feel like i can answer very easily:
i’d say he is definitely a sylph — and part of this may or may not be me projecting as i am a sylph and i really relate to basil’s character ;D
sylphs at their core are a passive, creation class. i think its a given basil would play a more passive class, i cant explain it but it just objectively makes sense to me. basils whole deal is that he wants to fix things, and feels inclined to heal and go back and fix his past mistakes, making sylph pretty much a given.
i was kinda torn between choosing the life or hope aspect for basil, as both objectively make sense in canon - but i wanted to sort of limit choosing multiple of the same aspects for characters. i think the life aspect makes sense for basil more, especially due to the plant symbolism n stuffs
ANYWAY,, sylph of lives whole deal are to allow for emotional growth in other people. i think the rest of the group very much so see basil as a person to look up to, someone who always tries to see the best in things and allows and encourages others to undergo personal growth.
alright mari time:
okay mari was kind of an obvious choice for me. i think seer very much so makes sense for her character, she’s very emotionally intelligent and being the sort of leader in their group, she has a lot of knowledge and serves as someone the rest of the group looks up to.
seers are very likely to slip into depressive states and have a pessimistic outlook on things, even though mari seems very optimistic to everyone else around her, we know as an objective fact that she is an overworker, overthinker and has the tendency to slip into states of perfectionism - i guess in a sense this can be compared to rose and her tendancy to slip into unhealthy coping mechanisms and behaviours too
seers are pretty much an essential for a successful sburb session - and i think this fits well with the fact that mari is an essential to the friend group.
heart is a given, i feel i dont have to explain why mari has the heart aspect — seers of hearts are a classpect who invites knowledge through heart. and again mari suits this very very much imo!
okay! kel!!
alright. classpecting kel was kinda difficult — the hope aspect was obvious but finding a class for this dude,, man,, was it hard but in the end i decided to settle on
the base definition of a heir of hope is someone who influences and inspires the hope of others - allowing change from hopeless to hopeful, this defintely applies to kel in canon.
kel is very much a hopeful optimist, his reaction to maris death compared to the others was to hide his own emotions and remain hopeful (even though he did react badly, he just repressed it), he always was the one to hold out hope that the group would get back together, be friends again and everything would be fine! he just wanted his friends to be happy and tried to turn them from hopeless and lost to hopeful! — i think this is very well shown in the church scene w aubrey and how so badly kel just ! wanted to help !! ahhhggh i love him
heir of hopes are a motivational rock to their session, which acts like how kel is to the group
also i feel like kel kind of reminds me of john a little bit - i suppose this perhaps maybe a tiny lil bit influenced my descision u_u
for hero:
i chose page of heart,, i liked having hero and mari share an aspect bc they are just . they are both so lovey and heart to me ;3; and man obviously hero would have the heart aspect, i mean, nothing else would suit his character more.
a page of heart is someone who invited exploitation through heart, the passive counterpart to the knight class. pages are a strong and smart class, as is hero. a page of heart is passionate and thinks w their heart, again, as does hero.
pages are STRONG, and i feel like hero as the ability to play a very strong and important class. hearts and pages are both prone to being sensitive people, loving, caring and i suppise charming too (again!!!! as is hero!!! :P) — also if this makes any sense to literally Anyone else,, hero kinda reminds me of jake in a sense i Cannot explain why PSNDHDJ
and lastly, aubrey
like sunny i struggled a lot classpecting her but i got there in the end and - i actually have an explanation !!!
firstly, rage being the parralel counterpart to the hope aspect (which is what i classpected kel) is very funny to me, i think in game they have a very fun relationship and exploring that through them having polar opposite aspects is silly
maids are an active creation class, aubrey creates rage as a way to deal with the grief of losing mari. i think she does this more by self destruction but she very much so also takes her anger out on others and utilising her emotions for her class is something i feel is very interesting. aubrey creates rage through herself and takes it out on those around her
thank u for reading if u read all of this.. i enjoyed v much so writing this (i wanna draw em now too -__-) + i apologise if i got anything classpecty wrong.. pls correct me if so!!

my thoughts on chapter one:
(i’m screaming)
grayson, of course
he is OBVIOUSLY who i care about most and he made it to harvard!! <3 good for him, NOT good for averygrayson.
ALTHOUGH do not lose hope, they do say absence makes the heart grow fonder - he has absolutely moved away to go to school obviously, but maybe he thinks it’s an added bonus that there’s now some distance between them, i just know he blames himself for the plane incident and her kidnapping.
side note - what is he studying?? i want to know.
jameson
seems to be his usual self but is also ‘on the other side of the world’ now what is that about?? a volunteer trip thing?? for some kind of school thing?? confused
nash and xander
i love them both so much, i feel like we haven’t seen much of nash/avery’s relationship and this feels very brotherly which is super sweet to me. also him and libby finally!!
xander is a menace as always.
the knife
okay THIS = KEY SYMBOL!! it’s on the cover which is significant so i have two possible theories so far
avery talks about being armed - it got me thinking that there is probably going to be another threat to her life/inheritance and let’s face it, it’ll be from skye, her dad, one of the other boys’ dads or even EVE. i feel like this is pretty obvious but why is it so important when it’s happened before?? is someone going to actually die this time (i really hope not) but i couldn’t think why it would be so key and fit this theory otherwise.
now if i’m completely clowning and just throwing out all my ideas, it would fit both jamie and grays character arc to die protecting her (more so gray but i hate to admit it) AND it would sort out the love triangle problem. i hate myself for even thinking this but it is sadly a possibility.
the knife and the passageways - yet more games from jamie what a surprise BUT i think she will actually use it to find a passage, one that nobody knows about and is probably another part of Tobias Hawthorne’s games/very dangerous/both.
does this knife have any significance to the Hawthorne family?? has it got a secret message/code etc. on/in the hilt, is it a key or am i overanalysing. probably the latter BUT it’ll depend where she got it— if it’s from the house chances are it’s definitely some kind of twisted.
the party
THIS IS WHERE EVE TURNS UP!! we know she’ll love a dramatic entrance, maybe even showing up with one of the boys (it’ll probably be with gray let be real) and i have theories here— what if she does turn up with gray and what if we get both jealous avery AND jealous jameson. avery will hate that gray hasn’t spoken to her in a while then turns up with another girl and jamie will hate that this emily lookalike (who he’ll immediately be ‘puzzled’ by) is with his brother. idk sounds pretty likely to me but we’ll see??
speaking of the boys… REUNION!! i hope gray surprises her in a good way but i can see it going south :/ they’ll all be there of course and weirdly i mentioned that i wanted to know what the boys get her for her birthday AND WE WILL!! i really want to be right but i probably won’t be aha.
SIDENOTE JAMESON GOT HER A HOT AIR BALLOON — we know this from other little snippets so that’s pretty cute (kind of like a car??)
Tumblr media
AND GRAYSON/AVERY DANCE — also implied from another extract from j.l.b’s twitter. SO EXCITED!!
Tumblr media
could this also be where things go badly wrong?? its easy to get into the house to get to ave if a bunch of other people are also going in…
more thoughts will come to me but that’s my initial spiral!! im SO EXCITED the wait is killing me slowly, let me know what you guys think/theorise about all this :) <3

so i finished utena
(not the movie though)
i started the first few minutes of the movie hoping that it was a sequel to the series but it looks more like a retelling or au so ill watch the movie another time
anyway, i still dont really know whats going on but i guess im glad i went through with the ride
i dont think i want to say necessarily  that im disappointed in the end, considering the show what kind of show it was and its not really like them to have a happy ending. if it was a regular (magical girl) series, utena would magically get a white outfit, she would have been able to save anthy and make akio change his ways by remembering how to be a prince again.
but you know that didnt happen lol
i didnt want to watch too many videos/look at comments analyzing the series/ending yet because i wanted to put my own thoughts out first but i have seen some comments already so
anyway im Stupid As Fuck so i dont think i Understood it At All. i usually take things at Face Value so i KNOW that many themes/symbolisms of the show had gone straight over my head.
how i interpreted it was Prince = Nobility/Innocence/”good”. utena wanting to be a prince (a masculine role) meant more as wanting to be (a protector) because she has stated that “she is a normal girl that wants a boyfriend”. ((i love her for this and i relate so much)) [[tho thinking about it the term “futsu” might mean “straight” in that context because they were talking about the rose engagement]]
i dont get what the duels were about in the grand scheme of things. Or the rose bride.
anthy as the “witch” came up way later, so i understood that more when paired with the “stole the prince from the world” backstory. I dont see how she became The Rose Bride. Is it that she is a slave to the demands of everyone or something.
im going to ignore all of the dark rose arc because it was like net zero information.
i saw gifs of someone (im Assuming its Nanami) turning into a car (in the movie???) so i always assumed the Ohtori car was supposed to be Anthy but iunno, ill find out. not sure if the car is symbolic of s*x or something
the OP sequence and song, the art, everyone: oh man Utena and Anthy are so in love
me: oh they seem like nice friends
noah fence, i really must be reading it wrong, but they seem like nice friends. 😅 utena never ended up calling anthy by her first name (i thought for sure it would have happened by half way) and the majority of the eps, theyre kinda just doing their own thing. Utena treats everyone mostly the same and its not like she coddles anthy, so seeing her banter with Wakaba gives more on Utena then when its the two. (tho utena not calling her by first name might be a “shounen” thing because she was playing the prince role)
“but what about the whole bed scenes!!! you dont just do that with A Friend” well the only thing i got from that is that utena wants anthy to open up but anthy never had the heart too and later utena realizes she was being naive for just Saying That and never Trying to see anthy’s pain
i find it Very hard to believe that Utena was “happiest when she was with anthy”. like sure, i guess maybe the most mundane moments were a good memory in the grand scheme of the rest of the nonsense but in terms of “romantic feelings” she obvious leans towards males. And Im not saying that she cant be Bi, but there was never a romantic attraction to Anthy. (if youre saying that shes attracted to The Prince in her past and both Toga and Akio had exhibited some form of that and thats why shes blushing around them, that doesnt disprove her being attracted to males)
you might say Utena does not need to be romantically attracted to Anthy for them to be close and i do agree. They do have have special bond, i can see this, and i'm glad that Anthy can finally step away from Akio to go look for the person who tried to save her.
(again i am so fucking stupid because i was (fed) the “Anthy stepping out of her coffin, leaving abusive Akio”, “Utena not Revolutionizing THE World but A World, Anthy’s World”. So i cant take any credit for those thoughts)
Its always hard to read Anthy because she’s so straight face and you can never take her words at face value. There was the one line that was said in a preview “Ive always hated you” but it was never said in the episode (im Pretty sure it was never said?) so the whole Anthy/Akio/Utena triangle really confuses me. Like, Anthy trying to jump and apologizing feels like her being honest to loving Utena but at the same time she was the one that stabbed Utena in the final duel and it could be because she still loves Akio despite everything that he’s done to her so shes battling it with herself.
I do acknowledge that they do love each other, given how they had poisoned(?) tea and cookies with a smile and then the roof scene. Anthy smiling at the end makes me very happy for her and i hope they are happy together, but it doesnt mean that i can see them as lovers (yet)
Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh what else
Miki, Nanami and Juri are the best trio, i love anything with the 3 of them together. My favorite scene ever has to be when theyre just vibing at the council table and Nanami and Miki are talking about their unrequited love and Juri  is like “oh you silly children” and theyre like “youre one to talk”. So much fun, love them.
Also loved when theyre playing badminton with Utena before the final show down and how theyre all like “oh we’re falling for you” but in such a cute supportive way
50% of the reason i started the show was because of shinkichi mitsumune but im kinda disappointed because i can barely hear the tracks aside from the vocal duel songs and zettai unmei mokushiroku. Aside from The Piano song.
Maybe i just have to watch the series 3 more times in 2 more languages to understand it like i did with sarazanmai. lol

you've talked about switching a lot recently but i've only just now been able to sit down and give my own little account 👍 yippie 🎉
however tbh if you're like "i'm donee talking about this tehehe" throw this ask out the window. shatter the glass for fun either way
anyways!! switching is so freaking funky, especially recently for us because it's been a lot of blurry and stressful switches.. probably due to midterms season? not too sure but also it's october so the mind is becoming full bonkers mode ya know
anyways, for us switches can either be super obvious or just go completely under the radar. there's no i between, and the easier the switch is, the less likely we are to like register that one happened.
well, specifically me because i have a tendency to stay around in co con a lot. when someone switches into co con with me it's usually pretty smooth, and fast, being brought about by very like random things. a song or an image or maybe how someone worded something! ya know
anyways, longer and more difficult switches which can get really rough. i think it's just, we have a really hard time with someone going from not in or near front just coming in full swing. that and also just needing to get someone out and they don't want to be.
but longer switches usually cause us to get really tired and dizzy (and usually an assortment of varying kinds of dissociative) and there's a weird like mental sensation almost like being dragged under into a swamp or being buried in pillows? it's like brain fog turned up an extreme amount
but there's on occasional full switch without all of that, but those are few and far i between. usually these are like zoning out but like for 10 minutes. like a shut down and reboot bust someone else hit the power on button ig.
actually tbh we see a lot of your system things in a very like computer sorta since?? we have a memory/trauma holder who like will create like "firewalls" to block information and sometimes even like shut down a chess to leave/get into front. it's kinda funny now that i'm thinking about it, the whole computer theming
anyways it's also important to note that we have an awful time of realizing who's in front until there's something very distinctly that alter that gets thought/done. that could be due to the heavy mental ick for a past bit, but it also might be a general thing. in fairness we haven't been tracking too long so it's hard to say.
however all around it's like... we struggle finding the queues as to who's in front, especially cuz i am usually there co con and conducting what like i think is best sorta thing. but hm yea i'm loosing the point i'm trying to say to sleepy soupy brain. anyways
i hope you are doing well! and if not that you are able to find contentment soon! i hope today will be a good day, because you deserve it!
HEY ITS BEEN A BIT SINCE U SENT THIS SRRY im having another lunarbloom nightmare switch moments so this is relevant once more and in fact probably will always be relevant bc this is lik daily fdshk
okay i had never thought about it like that as like. the easier the switch the less likely its noticeable. because im thinking now like there have been a lot of times where i abruptly start acting different but dont remember switching but maybe i did? but its just seamless. hm
handshake u and me being hosts that frequent co conning
OH INTERESTING !! despite being a pretty brain foggy individual i dont notice a tonnn of brain fog when i swtich so that is really interesting to note :o plus the synonyms u use those r so interesting
haunted by the metaphors and symbolism <- assigned computer at system
sorry if this is like all over the place as a response but overall this is so so interesting ty for sharing :O always interesting to see how ppl switch since it varies sm!

ok just finished where angels fear to tread and i honestly liked it a lot more than i thought i would. the whole time i read it was this cycle of going "wtf why would he write that that's such a stupid thing to happen this sucks" and then reading on for a while and thinking ok no that was really fucking smart. it is still weaker imo than the later books ive read by forster but i really liked it anyway. i also found the romance plotline which i won't spoil a lot more interesting and compelling tbh than the likes of lucy and george, i think arwav stands on merits other than romance and george is kind of just a stand in for a certain way of looking at life so it isn't really a focus to show the actual process of her falling for him even though that's literally what the book is about, i think w/ this book it gave that kind of plotline a much more interesting perspective and especially ending which again i won't spoil. either way that isn't at all the most interesting part or the main premise of the book so idk why i mentioned it first. i thought it was extremely interesting to focus on the baby, obviously there's a whole lot of symbolism there about innocence, family values, who is ultimately going to be a key player in the next generation, hope etc. plus there were a few lines near the end involving a jug of milk that i personally thought were really affecting. i also really loved some of the descriptions of italy, the cafe, landscapes, theatre etc although some of forsters comments on italian culture are.. a little questionable. i def think there's some kind of exoticising of italians throughout which is present in arwav as well but to a lesser degree. however something else that was similar to arwav that i liked was the way that the english characters seemed to view italy almost as a state of mind which manifested in a whole bunch of different ways in their tourism and the way they moved through italy depending on their outlook - thinking especially of philip vs harriet, also lilia - but ultimately none of them managed to see it as just a regular ass country with normal people in it rather than some kind of mystical philosophical principle which imo was part of what led to a lot of the negative stuff that went down throughout (and there was a lot more than i expected from a book which i was led to believe was like.. a goofy social comedy lol it isn't). one day i might make a whole post abt forsters attitude to tourism and the representations of other countries and how thats used to drive the plot - tourism is like.. an integral part of literally all his books ive read so far except maurice - but im probably going to save that until after i read a passage to india. anyway more generally like all his books this one had those lovely little stand alone passages which really speak to me and are just a wonderful experience to read. there were also some kind of more obvious metaphors/symbols than in other books by him - ones that stuck with me were the milk, the birds eating all the seeds in the garden, the baby, the walls of the town .. i thought they were obvious but didn't go so far as to be annoying or too on the nose which was nice, like they were still interesting and made you think. also the whole ending was so much DRAMA and full of PLOT TWISTS which i hadn't been expecting at all so i was just reading it like oh my god :0 no way :0.
anyway tl;dr i would recommend this book but probably only if you've already read other stuff by forster, its quite interesting within the wider body of his work but if it's the first book of his u read then it probably won't leave a huge impression, tbh i would recommend reading howards end first bc it will suck ur dick and so forth, yeah i liked this book 👍 byee

As someone who has never played FF7 its always kind of funny to see FF7 characters be talked about, because I am aware of a bunch of the big general plot beats but also I know a lot of the cultural images of the FF7 characters from years of fan characterization and spinoffs so trying to reconcile the characters as symbols with the knowledge that the characters are characters can get kinda funny.
Zack's the biggest example of this, I think, because I only found out about his plot beats from cultural osmosis after years of the cultural image of Cloud and Sephiroth's toxic yaoi thing. So with him especially its hard to think about him and focus on the stuff I academically know actually matters.
So people talk about Zack and I go, yeah yeah The Tragedy and all that. But I also immediately think of how the Kingdom Hearts series does Final Fantasy character cameos that never really have major plot stuff going on, and they put Zack in a prequel game full of doomed characters because like. Of course. But because it's just a cameo Zack comes out of that game fine, except for an ominous black feather that floats down near him in the credits sequence.
So in my heart Zack's kind of like. An ill omen in presence. I see Zack and he feels like someone doing tarot readings flipped over The Tower. And then my brain catches up and goes "Well that's just because he is himself the protagonist of a doomed prequel" but its too late. It's like with Aerith where I see her and I think about The Obvious and then go "Well she's also a character in the game before That Happened".
oh god, yeah, i sure imagine!
ff7 is kind of a legendary game and i think that a lot of plotbeat have been talked about so often people just know it. Like Sephiroth's homoerotic obsession for Cloud gets brought up everytime Cloud gets added to a crossover game because Sephiroth is sure to follow (hi Smash bros), the Aerith's thing has been brought up time and time again, and then there's the KH games that had peppered some of the story lore here and there.
But i also think that players actually don't talk about a lot of the plotbeats. Not to mention the shipwar that ends up completely eclipsing the story and its themes at times.
(im vaguing a bit but this may be spoilery)
Zack is in this really weird position, especially before the remake came out, because Zack is simultaneously Square Enix's most popular male character (across all the games) and also a character who's massive element is that he had to remain a mystery for the longest time. (and it's why i have a problem with the remake just spoiling it right from the start).
Like, even i was introduced to the game by Zack's tragedy, but i didn't know about it going in, so to me i really jumped in to his last scene and then lost my mind.
But even so personally i played Crisis Core first, so i have a very distinct image of Zack in my head. Of the charming, cheerful, sweet, even if not the smartest boy, who joined in to follow his dreams only to realize he signed on for a nightmare he had no way to sign out of. To me Zack is the guy who tries to be so optimistic, blindly at first, then forcing himself to shut his eyes to be optimistic, then who realized he couldn't keep is eyes closed to it but he had to still hold on to hope, only for it to run him into the ground by the end of the game and he's just breaking under the weight of it all.
there's a lot of tragedy to Zack way past just How It Ends, and it fascinates me personally. But i also have a "got obsessed about Zack Fair when i was 12" disease so i have so much i could say for those last 17 years of stuff to talk about.
(also the feather in KH is a reference to two things: first, Zack's obsession with wings that follow him through the Prequel, and second, the implied fact both Sephiroth and Cloud have reason to be looking for him. in the KH mobile game from the way back they even had Cloud grabs the feather Zack was last seen in in the credits. and obviously that went nowhere since KH3 didn't include any of the FF characters in it. But i still remember.)
But i think Zack is also in a fascinating position because people don't want to talk about what's up, yet people mostly know he mattered to Cloud for an instant, and it makes going through the OG with just the knowledge "Zack mattered to Cloud" genuinely earthshaking.
I remember watching a let's play of a guy going into ff7 totally blind, he didn't know anything about it, and he took everything Cloud said at face value as you do without the benefit of foresight. And then Zack was namedropped, and Cloud reacted in a way the let's player didn't expect. And i remember the actual shock in the voice of the guy going "but. but wait isn't Zack the guy the prequel is about? what the hell is going on, why is he namedropped now, why is /this/ happening."
And, in the sense Zack haunts the narrative, is that if you know Zack exists, you'll start picking it up and it'll make you approach the game differently.
Zack was made from the start to haunt the narrative, meanwhile Aerith was there to be alive first. Everyone knows what happens to her, and sometimes people see her as a doomed figure, but people fail to realize that she is this doomed and sad /because she was so alive/, because she had so many plans for the future.
Another one who gets to be different than you'd expect at first is Sephiroth, because everyone knows how he is about Cloud /in the movie/late game/in the others content they appeared in/, but Sephiroth doesn't start out like that, neither in Crisis Core nor in the OG. And it's why i have beef with Sephiroth in the remake because it's "late game Sephiroth", not early game Sephiroth showing up.
And i think people know Sephiroth is a villain of legends that they just take it at face value, but it's not how he works. I was discussing with a friend who started ff7 by the remake and came to me really dubious because he thought a lot of things didn't make sense or broke the momentum and he was asking me to clarify. And the thing that took him out at the time was that he didn't understand how this Sephiroth is supposed to be anything "legendary". Like, nothing about his appearance in the remake was interesting to him and he was really peeved about it. The moment i told him "because Sephiroth doesn't appear in this part of the game originally and he has a slow built and doesn't start obsessing about Cloud until after their encounter in Junon" he understood everything, the moment i explained HOW Sephiroth was built of he got it. People know Sephiroth is a homoerotic threat to Cloud but people don't know how it actually built on that regard.
FF7 exists a lot in people mind in the way they think they know about it from what was told online, but trust me it's not the actual experience of the game. But how can you properly interreact with a game so legendary that it influenced so many new tropes? How do you come back to it? and so forth.
People in general will put it therefore in this type of gaming pedestal everyone has some idea on, seeing the characters more like archetype than they would know them.
but, yeah, personally i got into ff7 when i was 12 or so. I don't see them as archetypes as much as i see them as my friends. The plot of this saga is really dear to me in a way that runs way too deep (so deep i had to explain the plot to my therapist because it comes with "here's what you need to know about me")
ANYWAY i got lost in the sauce, but *coughs* i really do love how you explain the way you see Zack in particular though. Like, the way he's an omen. You are actually super right in a way you can't even imagine. Everything we know about Zack brings a reckoning and it's just. He's really my favorite example of "haunting the narrative". Once you know how he does, everything builds up only for it to explode when it comes to it.
Anyway. I could ramble about that all day long i have so many ff7 thoughts. There's def something about "what people expect from decade of cultural osmosis" vs "what's actually in the game", all of which also got muddied by the additions to the franchise.
but. yeah. man.
anyway very glad to be your window into what it is when you've been made insane by ff7. There's so much i could say, not enough time,
But thank you for reading o7
