(i am sending you writing asks) can i get a uhhhhh... number #1, #13, #19, and a #23 please thank you
[drive thru speaker crackle] ask machine broke
jk thank u luke!!! i am sorry this is so fucking long
1. Tell us about your current project(s) – what’s it about, how’s progress, what do you love most about it?
so adhd is a disorder where--
im joking but uh. off the top of my head:
fallout 3 mlw/charon fic that i just. have put way too much time into mostly as a challenge to myself to understand the ship (13k+ words)
disco elysium time loop fic which is so close to done. its short and sweet. CAN I CROSS THE FINISH LINE? no (4k words)
pokemon swsh trainer/hop fanfic about their friendship during the gym challenge as reflected on by hop as they prepare to part ways for college. another "haha im playing this game this might be a fun challenge" that got so goddamn out of hand (8k words)
murderbot fanfic ive posted about before where ART tries to hold hands. its also short, mostly written, and something i SHOULD finish. but will i? (i keep saying "no" but i mean "hopefully") (3k words)
original story closing the book on a character i played in a dark fantasy intrigue ttrpg. hey! this game ended 4 months ago! why is this still not done (12k+ words)
a visual novel? a whole goddamn visual novel about h3x, another ttrpg character? this game has officially been ended prematurely due to gm burnout so realistically i will prob never finish this. but also, i kind of want to just to teach myself how to make a visual novel? OOPS? (??? words bc figuring that out would require booting three different programs. but it's at least 15k+)
my locked tomb western au fanfic that i started for the 2021 tltbb and then basically dropped due to mixed reception and getting burned out on that fandom. another project i will probably never finished but with the new book coming out who tf knows (22k+ words)
an outlined lesbian southern horror novel about a woman being seduced by a haunted house. this project is so exciting but. please scroll up. when am i gonna start it. and DON'T say nanowrimo i'll cry (2300 words)
worldbuilding for a beam saber ttrpg game i want to run very badly but realistically won't run for 3 years. but yknow. its not like ive got anything else to write (2k words)
worldbuilding im behind on for a magical realism 1930s monster of the week ttrpg game im running this fall. i literally need to get this to the players by the end of this week ideally lmfao (??? words bc its spread out over 3 documents and a google slides presentation)
more. there's more. im just going to stop now but i need u to know there's more
13. Do you share your writing online? (Drop a link!) Do you have projects you’ve kept just for yourself?
much to the chagrin of anyone who wants me to, you know. make a living writing, publish again, "do something with my talent," i almost exclusively write WAY TOO LONG stories about the tabletop roleplaying games i'm in on my wordpress. i also write approximately one fanfiction every two years, mostly for wildly different fandoms, here on my ao3.
i would honestly say about 40% of the writing i do is just for me? (unless we want to talk about the nonexistent traffic to that wordpress blog or how often my fellow players have to go "alex i simply do not have the time to read 20k words about the blorbo you created for our game," in which case it could be argued that 90% of my writing is only consumed by me slkdjlfjg) i think it's super important to write for yourself and not attach your enjoyment of writing to engagement/web traffic. the internet will make u insane about that
19. Is there something you always find yourself repeating in your writing? (favourite verb, something you describe ‘too often’, trope you can’t get enough of?)
oh man this character has a complex relationship w their mom
characters talking "flatly" or delivering something deadpan
"trudged" (insert paul bettany's monologue about trudging from a knight's tale here)
"the moral of the story is, it's not about building something that outlives you, it's about enjoying the life you're living with the people you love" character arc (i stole this arc from my life)
having characters do fucked up and evil things to coffee bc i can't stand the taste of it
23. What’s the story idea you’ve had in your head for the longest?
i'm restraining myself only to what i've already listed above. the visual novel is the oldest, bc i love my terrible son and i do actually really want to learn how to write and program VNs

✿: feeling so out of it, they need constant attention
You’ve got it! 💕  Thanks for the ask!
Someone asked me to write asthmatic Matthew in the ER a while ago, and I didn’t do it, but here it is now. 😂 I hope it's not total trash.
Sweet Normalcy
Word Count: 1555
Chest pain, the dull aching kind that flares up every time he inhales, that’s all he feels. Keeping his eyes open takes a great deal of effort, but the constant hissing flow of nebulized albuterol being delivered through the mask on his face makes it hard to get any sleep. Maintaining a train of thought for longer than fifteen seconds is also a sudden challenge. When he rolls his head to the right and looks up at the monitor behind him, he sees his heart rate is in the 140s and his oxygen saturation is at ninety-five percent on albuterol and oxygen. That’s not normal for him. None of this is normal. He can’t remember the last time things got this out of control.
“Matthew? Any better, love?” Dad asks him from the chair to his left. He’s been sitting there for hours now, continuously keeping vigilant watch.
It’s a busy night in the emergency department, and it feels a bit like he’s in a bad fever dream. The doctor checking in on him introduced herself earlier, but he can’t recall her name. An alarm goes off every few minutes from someone’s monitor, and it takes him longer than it should to recognize that it’s his monitor making that noise and alerting his nurse to keep coming over to assess him due to his seesawing oxygen saturation and heart rate.
Matthew’s not even sure what time it is anymore. He barely remembers anything. Every hour or so, he will doze off into a fitful half-sleep for twenty minutes or so before waking again and feeling disoriented. A nurse could tell him he’s been here for a week, and he’d believe them.
“Matthew? I asked if you’re feeling any better?” Dad asks again, leaning forward in his seat to grab his clammy left hand and squeeze it gently.
“A little,” Matthew lies, for his father’s sake. He wonders where Alfred and Papa are. They were here earlier, he’s pretty sure.
“I can tell when you’re not being truthful,” Dad sighs, squeezing his hand harder. “You’re not improving. You need to be admitted. This is ridiculous. You should have been admitted hours ago.”
Matthew hates seeing him stressed like this, but he also knows there’s nothing he can do about it at the moment. He feels himself slipping into momentary sleep again, and his eyes flutter shut. He wants to go home. Wants to be in his bed…Is it morning yet?
“Sixteen-year-old with a history of asthma…Patient accompanied by his father. Patient began oral corticosteroid treatment two days ago at home after experiencing wheezing, chest tightness, and coughing that was not fully improving with usual rescue medications…”
They’re talking about him—Matthew realizes that much, at least. He opens his glazed eyes and sees a new doctor approaching him. His ID badge says he’s a critical care doctor. Matthew’s not sure what the difference is between him and the other doctor he saw earlier, but he honestly can’t be bothered to care. He wants to sleep. Desperately. And he wants the chest pain to stop.
“Matthew, buddy?” the doctor says, putting a hand on his shoulder.
He doesn’t want to breathe anymore. His chest hurts too much, and speaking would require taking another agonizing breath.
"Mmmrgh" is all he can manage.
“He’s been less and less responsive,” Dad supplies from the other side of the room, and Matthew can hear the nervousness in his voice, which is unsettling. Dad rarely ever shows how anxious he is when someone’s sick. “I can’t get him to talk to me in full sentences anymore—just phrases.”
The doctor carefully sits him up, and Matthew feels his whole body shake. He rests his elbows against the stretcher to brace himself. A cold stethoscope touches his back, and he shivers.
“He’s still not moving air. He needs to be brought upstairs to intensive care to be monitored. We’ll continue IV steroid treatment and continuous albuterol. If he’s still like this, we can consider non-invasive ventilation and take it from there. Our main priority is to protect his airway.”
Dad says something, but Matthew doesn’t hear it over the noise of the nebulizer. He just knows he’s going to be moved soon and the treatment is going to become more serious now. If he weren’t so tired, he might be scared.
The doctor leaves, and Dad goes back to holding Matthew’s hand. “It’s going to be all right, love. You’ll receive better care soon and hopefully, you’ll start to feel better,” Dad tells him before using his other hand to pet his head. “Try to rest. I’ll be right here, and I won’t let anything happen to you, understand?”
Matthew nods. His eyes do close again, and he does get some brief rest. The next time he’s aware of his surroundings and wakes up, he’s already in the ICU, which means he slept through his transport. The respiratory therapist is setting him up on a BiPAP machine, and once it’s on, it makes his chest hurt even more, which he didn’t think was possible. He grits his teeth against the pain and tries not to make a fuss about it—it would just make Dad worry even more. The air being forced into his lungs is welcome yet excruciating at the same time.
But he doesn’t have to say anything for Dad to know he’s suffering. It’s written all over his face. “I know, poppet. It’s just temporary. It should help.”
It’s so exhausting that he falls asleep again without even needing to think about it. Again, he has no idea how much time passes until he sees the sun shining through the windows of the hospital, indicating that it’s finally morning. The BiPAP mask squeezing his face gets replaced with a regular oxygen mask again, and it occurs to him that his chest feels much lighter and his head is clearer. The worst is over. The air in his lungs feels crisp and refreshing...Almost sweet, even.
“How are you feeling?” Dad asks for the millionth time, still perched next to him.
“Better…For real this time.”
Dad hasn’t slept, of course. He never sleeps in such situations. He was likely watching him all night and conversing with his care team. “Good. You gave us all quite a scare.”
“Sorry.”
“Oh, no, it’s not your fault, love. Not at all…Do you think you’re feeling well enough to have some breakfast?”
“Yeah.”
Dad gives him a relieved smile and then goes off to request a breakfast tray for him. It gets brought up within half an hour, and even though Matthew feels a bit nauseous from the steroids in his system, he knows he needs to eat to gain some energy back.
He’s given some pancakes, a fruit cup, and orange juice. He decides to make a move for the orange juice first because his mouth feels incredibly dry and gross. He picks up the carton and that’s when he notices just how shaky he still is. His hands are trembling violently from all of the bronchodilators in his system.
Dad quickly takes the carton from him, sticks a straw into it, and then brings it back up to Matthew’s lips. “Here, poppet, I’ll hold it for you.”
“…I can do it.”
“You’ll spill it. Don’t be stubborn.”
It doesn’t feel great to have poorer motor skills than a toddler, but Matthew sips some juice through the straw anyway, allowing himself to be fed because he doesn’t have a choice. He finishes the entire carton, one pancake, and half of the fruit cup before his stomach protests. Dad doesn’t seem too happy about him not finishing the meal, but he doesn’t push it either.
And just as he’s finishing up, he finds out Alfred and Papa are outside of the unit, waiting to be allowed in. He’s only permitted to have two visitors at a time, so Dad leaves to take a quick trip home to eat and shower while Alfred and Papa take watch next.
“Dude, you’re alive! Thank God, man. No offense, but you were looking really rough and out-of-it yesterday,” Alfred exclaims upon arrival, bright-eyed and full of pep as always. “It’s good to see you’re looking more like yourself now.”
“We’re so relieved, mon chou. Your father said you may be able to come home as soon as the day after tomorrow.”
“I hope so…Sorry for making everyone worry.”
Alfred throws his hands up in the air and shakes his head dramatically. “I have to teach you everything, don’t I, Mattie? You’re not supposed to apologize for being sick. You’re supposed to milk it for all its worth and make everyone feel bad for you and buy you get well soon gifts. Tell Dad when he comes back that you wanna play the new Pokemon Snap on the Switch.”
“That’s what you want to play, Alfred.”
“Yeah, but we can share it, right?”
“Alfred, your brother is seriously ill, and all you’re thinking about are video games again! Where did your father and I go wrong? You could show some sympathy!” Papa scolds, pinching the bridge of his nose in aggravation.
“It was a joke! Kinda…Obviously, I love ya, Matt! I was really worried, too!”
And he has never craved normalcy as much as he does now.
Yup. Things are already going back to normal.

The Top 5 Must Play RPGs for Every Video Game Console
The gaming market is monstrous. Right now there are six consoles, three handhelds, and the ever present PC you can buy games for. That's 10 different ways you can get your game on, so if you're someone who doesn't have the ways or means to buy all 10 platforms and every halfway decent game that arrives for any of them, you're probably wondering which way you should go to get the most bang for your buck. I'm a bit of a gamer nerd, and so for you I've collected the top five available games (in the stores now) for each console for each particular genre. Based on reviews, user comments, and my personal experience, these are the best ways to go. This round: RPGs. The Japanese RPG market exploded in the 32-64 bit days, blowing out with a new game seemingly every week. You can blame Square for that one, bringing to the stores amazing game after amazing game, which immediately spurned every other company to release whatever dreck they could muster to keep you pumping money into their pockets. Nowadays there are hundreds of options out there, and the Japanese market isn't the only one around. North American companies have their own answers to the RPG boom and now it's a veritable flood of options. Here are the top five for each option you've got. PlayStation 2 - The PlayStation brand name has been the home of quality RPGs since PS1 first roled out with Suikoden and Final Fantasy games in the mid- 90s. This list was hard because there are so many left off. Dark Cloud 2, Final Fantasy X, the Shin Megami Tensei games and many more deserve recognition, but alas these are also long as hell, so if you had more than 5, when would you ever finish them. You may notice I exclude the PS3, but I can't really offer any PS3 RPGs for you until they've actually been created. We're waiting. 1. Shadow Hearts Covenant - The Shadow Hearts series took on a serious following after this entry, one of the greatest RPG releases of the generation. It's take on the fantasy RPG genre blended into the realms of reality, bleeding over in church and demonology lore. Taking place in the 19th Century and following the legend of a young woman and her unfortunate destiny, it can be enjoyed alone or along with it's predecessors Koudelka and Shadow Hearts (I). 2. Disgaea - This is probably the best strategy RPG released for any console ever. Released by Atlus, a brand name that has grown in and of itself of recent years to the respectability that names like Square and Level 5 now carry with their games, Disgaea is about the young prince of hell and his quest to regain his domain after being awoken. With more than 200 hours of gameplay here, count on playing for days on days. And it's funnier than hell. These are great characters. 3. Suikoden III - The Suikoden series is the cult series. Of course it's slowly sliding out of cult status and into the mainstream with releases occurring every couple of years since this one. The best in the series with the possible exception of Suikoden II, Suikoden III tells the story of a huge cast of characters, all intricately entwined with one another. You play through the tale of their war, but as seen through each characters eyes. Truly epic. 4. Final Fantasy XII - The newest release, released only two weeks before the PlayStation 3's release, this game redefines the epic scope of prior Final Fantasies, literally reaching for the stars. Each character is fully realized and a part of the action, their story an intricate part of the game. There's no fluff here, and the rebuild of the decades old RPG formula was all for the better, working for the complete and total betterment of the game and hopefully the series. 5. DragonQuest VIII - Dragon Quest has always been huge in Japan, but only now did it find the same success here in the US pubg mobile hile. Dragon Quest VIII is the huge (extremely huge) result of Square Enix's jump to full 3D glory in their series. The graphics are incredible, the characters hilarious and deeply involving, and the story arresting. The battles aren't half bad either. And the usual monster catching glory is intact. A long game, it will keep you busy for days. Gamecube (and Wii) - The Gamecube got shorted on the RPG options, much like its big brother the N64. Nintendo lost a lot of their clout with the RPG crowd when Squaresoft jumped ship in the 90s and they're still trying to earn it back...so far to little success. But, the future looks bright, as Square Enix is finally producing games for the Big N, and Nintendo's own work includes more forays into the RPG market. Here's hoping for more, because the Wii is perfect for the format. 1. Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess - The newest Zelda adventure, Twilight Princess, is by far the best reason to own a Nintendo Wii. The game is a masterpiece on almost every level, to the point I'm almost willing to call it the greatest game ever made. We've heard this a lot, that this game is the greatest. That it surpasses what Ocarina accomplished 8 years ago. And as my own favorite game, it's hard to ever put anything above Ocarina in terms of scope, depth, and innovation. No need to go into detail. Read my review of it here for more thoughts on why it's so amazing. 2. Tales of Symphonia - The first really good RPG for the Gamecube, and still one of the only ones really. The newest entry in the hugely popular (in Japan) Tales saga, Symphonia was a huge, fun, well told game. The characters were fun, the battle system is one of the best around, and the action was fully inclusive and crafted a long game. Symphonia was the Gamecube owning RPG fan's one saving grace. 3. Skies of Arcadia Legends - Originally released for the Dreamcast, Skies of Arcadia was given a second life on the Gamecube, again fated to anonymity due to the failure of the console. This is a great game. It tells the story of two sky pirates who must traverse the sky ocean and save the world from a shattering war and so on. You attempt throughout the game to build your pirate rank and build up your ship. It was one of Dreamcast's must have games and the same for Gamecube. Unfortunately so few actually had it, and now it's not exactly easy to find. 4. Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker - The infamous Wind Waker. Nintendo's foray into cel shading and the horrible foray into ocean mechanics. This game is still amazing. It's Zelda afterall, but it's flawed on more than the basic levels. It's hard to get around. The ocean is huge, and the game is short. But the parts you play, in between sailing around Hyrule are beautiful and incredibly fun. 5. Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door - The Big N rounds out the five with another in house effort. Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door was a return to the Paper Mario fun they coined in the N64 days, this time around with the RPG elements the game seems to work best with. Incredibly easy yes, but fun as hell at the same time. Xbox (and X360) - The Xbox, not surprisingly saw no Japanese development. Every game listed below was produced in English Speaking countries, mostly Canada actually. The style is noticeably different, but the quality is equally incredible. The strive for realism by Western developers can be seen in each of these entries. Although the lack of humor is equally as prescient. 1. Elderscrolls IV: Oblivion - The Xbox 360 has some serious horsepower. Not only is there room to spare, but the graphic output is insane at time, and what better way to show this off than with an Elderscrolls game. Monstrous, huge worlds in which you can freely roam wherever you want and interact with your environment. This game is huge and intense. Hundreds of hours can be spent just wandering around and completing a main quest. As for getting the rest done. Who knows how long you could spend on there. 2. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic - Star Wars games were starting to get a bad rap for a while, until Bioware arrived with the first full fledged Star Wars RPG. Built on the click and wait action of the D&D ruleset games, KOTOR was a brilliant game that took Star Wars fans back a few thousand years to the height of the Jedi/Sith wars. It also had one of the most surprising and amazing endings in any game..ever. 3. Elderscrolls III: Morrowind - And another Elderscrolls game. This one was equally as huge as its sequel, and had just as amazing graphics for its time. Elderscrolls truly stretches the imagination in terms of open world RPG exploration and making a game that will take a long time to finish. A truly wonderful game. 4. Jade Empire - Set in a fictional ancient China, Jade Empire comes from the makers of Knights of the Old Republic, and while not nearly as large in scope or length, the game utilizes an array of different combat styles and elements that make it sheer fun to play. It's shorter and simpler than the original games from Bioware, but they make up for it with the attention to detail and the battle system upgrades. 5. Fable - Touted as an amazing achievement in world interface, Fable turned out to be a little bit of a letdown. It was smaller, shorter, and less engaging than what was claimed, but it was still a solid, fun game to play. Starting as a bland adventurer you could become either entirely good or entirely evil through the actions committed during a quest. The characters are generic, the quests forgettable, but the options given to play through them all are still fun. The ending however leaves something to be desired, and they could have done with a few more reasons to openly explore. For a sandbox RPG, it was surprisingly linear. Game Boy Advance - Yup, no DS games. I imagine soon, with the release of the new Pokemon game, and the surprising announcement of Dragon Quest IX coming exclusively to the DS, the RPG options there will explode, but for now your best bet in the RPG realm on handhelds is with the Game Boy Advance. Here are a few of the best.

3DS: Time for Playtime
It's been fun getting a Wii U lately, but I wanted to look back on all the use I've gotten out of my 3DS in the last year by running down my most played games.
Super Smash Bros. - 154 Hours
This is still my most played game after recently getting back into the 3DS, despite playing zero Smash in that time. I played a lot of this game when it came out and then leading up to the release of Ultimate. This game was a godsend for someone like me who didn't own a Wii U but wanted to stay involved with the series.
Pokemon X - 56 Hours
Again, this is from when I first got my 3DS. I played this one over a whole summer vacation off and on! I still can't decide how I feel about XP Share.
Pokemon Ultra Moon - 51 Hours
Okay, this one is this high because after beating the game, my girlfriend tried to catch all the Pokemon and collect all the totem stickers. I really enjoyed this one, but the Ultra Necrozma fight kicked my butt.
Link Between Worlds - 49 Hours
I actually own the special edition Triforce 3DS which came bundled with this game! As my first game on the system, it is no surprise to see it so high, even though I got stuck on the final boss. I consider this to be one of the best Zelda games.
Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask - 41 Hours
This one makes a lot of sense. When I played all that Smash Bros before the release of Ultimate, this was the one other game I played during that time, to the point of actually beating it and a good chunk of the daily puzzles! I even missed a college lecture because I was so wrapped up in the climax.
Pokemon Alpha Sapphire - 27 Hours
Finally, a game I played recently with no shenanigans or excuses. This was an interesting "book ends" with Omega Ruby, as OR was the first Pokemon game I played in my recent endeavor to play them all, while AS was towards the end. Backwards of their names, huh?
Pokemon Omega Ruby - 26 Hours
Fitting that this game should be so close to Alpha Sapphire. I would think that one of these two games would've been left running overnight or somehow had the playtimes differ more, but it somehow makes me hapy to see them side by side. I appreciated Wally's Theme much more the second time through.
Pokemon Y - 23 Hours
Considerably less than the time I spent in X all those years ago. This was one of the last Pokemon games I played in my recent playing of all the games, since I had already technically beaten X. It was a lot of fun to revisit though, and I love Sylveon!
Ocarina of Time 3D - 21 Hours
This one also makes sense, since I owned it during my original teenage years of owning the 3DS. I can't believe I paid 40 bucks for this just to get stuck on the Forest Temple for years! OoT doesn't resonate with me the same way as everyone else seemingly.
Pokemon Red - 19 Hours
Again, this makes sense. I think this was the third game of my recent Pokemon marathon, right after Alpha Sapphire and Ultra Moon. It was a short run thanks to an overlevelled Venasaur and the three legendary birds. I enjoyed crushing this game.
Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy - 16 Hours
This is the game I just finished. I love the series and it was nice to finish it out. I think the ending was silly but the presentation value was nice to see.
Pushmo - 14 Hours
This was my go-to breakfast game for weeks, but phone-scrolling has replaced it as my morning activity while eating.
Shovel Knight - 14 Hours
This used to be the premiere downloadable title on 3DS. I think this game still holds up, but it has lost the sheer novelty of being a Kickstarter retro success over time.
Shin Megami Tensei IV - 13 Hours
I liked Persona 4 so I thought I would like this. It was too difficult for me back then, but now I don't have the patience. This was one of the games I actually paid 15 bucks to download back in highschool.
Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate - 13 Hours
The first of my several attempts to get into Monster Hunter. I bought, played, quit, and sold this game all back in high school. I would later go on to buy, try, and sell Monster Hunter World as well. It just isn't for me.
Metroid: Samus Returns - 12 Hours
I tried and hated this game on PC emulator, but it has a lot more charm on the actual system. I still generally dislike the melee mechanic but I generally enjoyed this game. It helps that I even beat the original first! Hopefully Dread fixes the few things wrong with this game.
Kid Icarus: Uprising - 12 Hours
I don't know if I ever fell in love with the "unique" control scheme of this game, but I definitely fell in love with all of the characters! This was a great one to play with my girlfriend watching. It's also great to have more of a context for Pit, Palutena, and Dark Pit in Smash now!
Pokemon Sun - 11 Hours
I haven't beaten it yet, whoops.
Rhyhm Heaven Megamix - 11 Hours
One of the last purchases I made before the Switch came out and killed my 3DS playing nearly permanently. I paid 30 bucks! As much as I love this game, I don't know if it was worth that.
Super Mario 3D Land - 10 Hours
A rare game that I played before AND after the rift of me playing 3DS. It's...fine. Definitely Mario.
Picross 3D: Round 2 - 9 Hours
I have always loved Picross and this is no exception. I really should dive back in sometime!
Animal Crossing: New Leaf - 8 Hours
I just can't get into it, I've tried but I can't.
Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright - 8 Hours
This was actually a birthday gift! I was very excited for the concept but hugely turned off by the time travel and setting. I need to give it another shake, perhaps after replaying some of the Ace Attorney games.
Resident Evil The Mercenaries 3D - 7 Hours
One of my few highschool digital purchases. I played a lot of Mercenaries in 6 and 5 (which this is based on, seemingly). It's...fine. But I should have just replayed Revelations on 3DS instead.
Theatrhythm Final Fantasy - 6 Hours
It was 7 bucks at GameStop used, so I guess I almost got a 1:1 ratio of hours to dollars. I would've enjoyed this game more now, after playing FF7 Remake.
Pokemon Picross - 6 Hours
Free AND Picross? Yes, but also grindy and scummy. I wish you could just buy a physical copy of this game with everything unlocked.
Paper Mario Sticker Star - 5 Hours
Ten dollars on clearance was too much for this game. Maybe I will try it again sometime knowing ahead of time that it is a joke of a video game. I spit on this game's grave.
Mario Tennis Open - 5 Hours
A lot of the games I acquired within the last year have much lower playtimes, so I was not expecting to see this game this high. I guess I played a few tournaments. I feel like I quit because Waluigi cheated, then played just the tutorial of Mario Golf before quitting that too.
Elite Beat Agents - 4.5 Hours
This game rules.
Tetris Axis - 4.5 Hours
This game drools.
Kirby Planet Robobot - 4.5 Hours
Cute game, but I only play it with my girlfriend.
New Super Mario Brothers 2 - 4.5 Hours
I am surprised it is this low considering I got stuck on the final boss in single player and beat around 2 worlds in coop.
Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward - 4 Hours
I need to play more!
Super Smash Brothers Demo - 4 Hours
Hell yeah this was such an exciting time to be a Nintendo fan! Trying to get ahold of this demo was like getting a Willy Wonk golden ticket. I was so excited to play as Mega Man, Villager, Mario, Link, and Pikachu even if just on Battlefield.
Kingdom Hearts 3D - 3.5 Hours
A surprisingly competent action RPG. This game kind of reeks as part of the PS4 collection, but it really shines on the original version.
Layton's Mystery Journey - 3 Hours
I like the idea of playing as Layton's daughter, but I don't like having a talking dog and an insufferable simp as sidekicks. I hope the next game just returns to the original crew.
Mario Kart 7 - 3 Hours
It's...Mario Kart. Not a ton more to say.
Mario Party Island Tour - 3 Hours
I have trouble keeping the different 3DS Mario Party games separate in my mind, but anything that's not Top 100 is fun with friends. Top 100 only has one, miserable board! Why???
Ultimate NES Remix - 3 Hours
A great game for pick up and play, but not for long sessions.
Art of Balance Touch - 3 Hours
Recently got into this. Tons of fun until the difficulty gets a little too high!
Warioware Gold - 2.5 Hours
I completely beat this game and it is still this low. Fun, but hard to recommend at any price but free.
Luigi's Mansion 2 - 2.5 Hours
Cute game....but feels hard to play for more than 20 minutes at a time.
Dead or Alive Dimensions - 2.5 Hours
Again, all I did was beat the game and then quit. Surprsingly competent for a 3DS fighting game, but too barebones with content compared to Smash.
Boxboy - 2.5 Hours
I feel like I played this game way more. It's cute and fun, but now I have a hard time picking up the puzzles where I left them.
Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate Demo - 2.5 Hours
This tricked me into buying the game! Dangit
Mario Party Star Rush - 2.5 Hours
Oh god, I can't keep this one and Island Tour straight.
Pokemon Shuffle - 2 Hours
I feel like I played this one way more, but that is probably because the phone version also exists.
VVVVVV - 2 Hours
Beat the whole game! Not a bad way to spend time, but this makes it worth only 2 dollars according to my 1:1 ratio of dollars to hours.
Final Fantasy Explorers - 2 Hours
I like some things about this game but I just cannot play anything related to Monster Hunter.
Tri Force Heroes - 2 Hours
This suffers from "Overcooked syndrome" where you have to rely on your teammates so much that it becomes a total chore.
Theatrythm Final Fantasy Curtain Call - 1.5 Hours
I played that much just to unlocked multiplayer.
Super Street Fighter IV - 1.5 Hours
I think I paid for this game full price back in high school and then barely played it. I've always tried to delude myself into thinking that I can play real fighting games that are not Smash.
Hatsune Miku Project Mirai DX - 1.5 Hours
Again, I feel like I played this game for days and days. I suppose rhythm games feel like time slows down when you play them. Thumbs up for including Puyo Puyo! I am surprised this game released in the West at all.
Rune Factory 4 - 1.5 Hours
I got this far as a favor to a friend. I just can't play any game where there is an optimal way to act that sounds exhausting but possible to me. I know I could easily talk to all the NPC's every day... but I do not want to.
Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate - 1.5 Hours
This was exclusively played with friends. Not a fan.
Pokemon Rumble World - 1.5 Hours
Free games. Novelty as a kid. No time for them as an adult. Nothing about this game is appealing beyond the price point.
Attack of the Friday Monster - 1.5 Hours
My biggest memory of this game is playing it on the schoolbus when a little kid asked if he could play/watch and I told him I was playing a boring game that he wouldn't like. As cute as this game is, yes, it is boring and not very fun.
Sonic Generations - 1.5 Hours
I somewhat enjoyed this game until the Shadow boss fight. Can't figure it out. Not fun.
Kirby's Extra Epic Yarn - 1.5 Hours
Cute, played it with girlfriend.
Super Mario Land 2 - 1 Hour
I think I got this with Club Nintendo points?
Rage of the Gladiator - 1 Hour
Medieval offbrand Punch-Out.
Mario Party: The Top 100 - 1 Hour
ONE BOARD?!? At least it has the storybook minifame from gamecube Mario Party.
Trace Memory - 1 Hour
Bought used from GameStop. I was told it was a hidden gem, but I didn't have the patience.
Mario and Sonic Rio 2016 - 1 Hour
Cute game to play with friends but some of the minigames suck. Thumbs up for less common Sonic characters.
Azure Striker Gunvolt - 1 Hour
Not bad, just helped me realize that I don't really like Mega Man style games all that much. The genre of "Mega Man" just feels like a Metroid with no exploration or meaningful progression.
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon - 1 Hour
I tried to get into this franchise but it is so booooorring and slow and unappealing to me.
I've been rounding to the half hour, so the next game is Zelda Oracle of Season at 44 minutes, which would round down to half an hour. I will take that as my cue to finish here.
In conclusion: games I owned longer tended to be played longer. Shocker. This was all just an excuse to ramble about Nintendo games anyways.

Am i even Human?
I’ve been part of my new high school for 3 years now, so i guess you could say it’s not technically new anymore. I’m still making tons of new friends but i’ve been with my best friend Kyle since day one, we always play Pokemon together and watch episodes of Dragonball z.
My new school also has a very dark past, i was told it in my first year by Kyle, he also told me it’s been about 30 years since it happened. To cut a long story short, there was a girl called Melissa who attended this very same school 30 years ago and from what i can gather she suffered from clinical depression because of her constant bullying by her other classmates. She suffered with this for years and eventually it all became to much for the poor girl and she went on a mad killing spree, killing 14 of the 22 students in her class including the teacher. She worked her way up to the school’s roof where she continued to slash at her own body with a butcher knife, finally she ended her own life by walking over the edge and plummeting to her death. This is how the story goes anyway, personally i don’t know anymore than what i’ve been told but if i’m being honest.
I couldn’t care less
I’ve really never known of the emotion we call sympathy or sadness, for my whole school life i guess you could say i’ve been wearing a mask to hide the true me, ironically myself has never met the real me either. I’ve been trying to learn different emotions through people, which i why i have so many friends.
So far ive succeeded in being seen as funny, i learnt as long as i kept a winning smile on my face, then people wouldn’t hate me but rather love me. 19 years of my life, that’s how long ive kept up this charade, if you can even call it that.
Hey dude, did you hear what happened last night?
My friend Kyle said with a sickening expression, i made myself look concerned.
What dude?
You know that quite chick Samantha, the one that sits in the corner alone.
Yeah?
I heard she killed herself last night. Hanged herself in her room.
Once i heard this i didn’t know how to react, i hadn’t learned the emotion sadness yet. I just stared blankly at my friend until he said something.
Dude, do you not feel anything?
No. I said to myself
I’m sorry Kyle i don’t know what to say.
Yeah, i guess it is shocking news. Well want to come round mine later.
Sure thing. I replied. With our heads both down we walked to our seats, the class was about to start and i’m certain we’ll be getting the same old tired speech from the teacher. “She was such a value to us all” “Our condolences to her family” “She will be missed”.
What bullshit
If she truly cared for anyone in this class then she wouldn’t have killed herself and left the burden to fall on us, if only she didn’t think of herself we might not be in this situation.
As usual class seemed to take forever to finish and by the end i actually felt like killing myself. The next day rolled around and the next and so on until a week had past since Samantha’s death, one week and i still hadn’t felt anything. Truthfully i actually forgot until a friend mentioned it today, i was getting ready to sit down until Kyle came running up to my desk drawing for breath.
Dude!
It took him awhile to get the rest of the words out, he was still catching his breath.
Its happened again, another death!
Really? I replied
Yeah. I’ve only just found out but they say she was found with knife marks all over her body. Just like that story, remember that girl did it too herself on the roof.
I actually forgot about it until he just mentioned it. I tend to get rid of useless information i have no need for. This time i really couldn’t be bothered to lie and put on a show for everyone to watch. I just came out and said what i was thinking.
I really couldn’t care less
I knew after saying this the whole class would probably hate me, i’ve spent years with this mask on my face showing people the false me and now i really haven’t got the effort to put up with anymore shit. My friend replied the exact way you’d think he would, the way any normal human would.
You heartless shit!!!!. Don’t say something like that.
I just stared at him. No expression to show, i didn’t know what he wanted from me so i showed him the one thing i had learnt to do good over the years.
I smiled.
He flung straight at me, rage consumed his face as he punched me right in my eye, my now bloodshot eye. I didn’t understand why he was so angry he didn’t even know them, perhaps this is what people call compassion.
Compassion? I don’t know what this word means.
I was sent to the nurse’s office, Kyle really did a number on my face its funny how those simple five words “I really couldn’t care less” could ruin a 3 year friendship. I stared blankly into distance as the nurse started to patch me up, there was only one thing going on in my head right now.
I guess i won’t be watching Dragonball z anymore with him.
Days passed without anyone in the class saying a word to me, eventually days turned to weeks and weeks into months. Over time i started to feel something, i didn’t know what it was called but i thought to myself, was this what those girls and Samantha were thinking at the time before their deaths. I remembered i used to call people like that selfish and know i’m contemplating the same thing, killing myself. Im sure the rest of the class will be happy if i’m gone, i no longer have any friends and i haven’t spoken to my family in years. Now that i think about it, it actually makes a lot of sense.
Class had finished and without a moment of thought or hesitation i started my walk.
To the roof.
Once i reached there i was blinded by a beam of light, the sun i thought what a wonderful day. I closed the door behind me and slowly started to move to the edge, each step felt heavier than the last it was like my body was saying no but my mind couldn’t react with any sort of reply. By the time i knew it i was standing looking at the concrete floor below, the wind brushed through my hair it felt like God was giving me a push. Still even now inside my head, there was nothing. I was hoping for at least something new, some new emotion that might help me carry on living.
But nothing.
When i turned round i realised the door i closed behind me earlier was now open. Kyle stood in front of me, now he was the one with the expressionless face.
Do you remember? He said
I just started directly at him, of course i had no idea what he was talking about.
Of course you wouldn’t, you don’t remember anything in that mind of yours but only the things you care about. Well i lost something i cared about!!!!
I Still had no idea.
6 months ago, when i came running to you about my sister and all you could say was you couldn’t care less!!!!
I remembered. Yes it was Kyle’s sister who killed herself that time, i guess back then i should have paid more attention to the conversation, or perhaps i did remember and didn’t care enough about that part of the story. About his own sister. I started to actually think, what sort of friend was i to him. I was to indulge in my own thoughts that i didn’t realise Kyle was now running straight for me, I wanted to move but couldn’t my feet just stayed still like they were attached to bricks. He grabbed me by the chest and pulled me so far to his face i could see his pupils dilating.
Tell me you bastard!! What are you thinking right now.
I. Didn’t know.
For the first time in my life my thoughts had vanished, i didn’t know what to tell him. The only thing i could do is resort to using the last emotion i could ever remember using in a conversation, ironically it was the conversation 6 months ago between me and Kyle. After a few seconds had passed i did it.
I smiled.
With complete anger in his face he threw me off the school’s rooftop. Suddenly my head started spinning, i was feeling so many things i had never felt before, Sorrow, regret, sadness, i was actually scared of dying something i thought i’d never feel. I guess i can only thank Kyle, whats this? I thought.
A tear?
I was crying, seconds away from death and i cry? I started laughing to myself. I could feel my head hit the concrete.
My last thought?
I smiled.

PDL Week 9 Recap
PDL Week 9 Recap
The final stretch before playoffs has begun and there are several teams fighting for their shot at playoffs
DEP vs. ITA: 0-2
NWN vs. TOT: 6-0
HEH vs. PIP: 0-5
VAV vs. LOL: 0-6
BFS vs. NYY: 6-0
COG vs. BAL: 0-1
SHS vs. NJJ: 6-0
BEN vs. AUK: 0-5
SLC vs. MID: 0-1
HFW vs. BLP: 3-0
JAX vs. MIN: 0-3
MIL vs. DCC: 0-4
This week brought some surprises and some very close games. There are no longer any teams that are undefeated after this week which means the pressure for a perfect season is off and now the fun can really begin. These games are very close and everyone has a chance to have a strong finish to the season, but lets jump into the playoff picture and how the teams can make playoffs
Playoff Picutre
Corsola Cola Division
BFS: to get first round bye needs to have a better record than NWN
1 win guarentees 1/2 for playoffs
NWN: To get first round bye needs to have same or better record than BFS
1 win guarentees 1/2 for playoffs
VAV: needs to win out to hit 6-6 (potential best of the rest seed)
to get second in division needs: to win out, BFS lose out
DEP: needs to win out to hit 6-6 (potential best of the rest seed)
to get second in division needs: to win out, BFS lose out
Green Tauros Division
COG: Guarenteed 1/2 in division for playoffs
1 win guarentees #1 in division
SLC: To get 1st in division needs COG to lose out and SLC win out
To guarentee playoffs needs SHS to lose 1 game or win out
SHS: to get second in division needs to win out and SLC lose 2 of last 3 games
Winning 2 games gives 7-5 record which should be good for playoffs
Toxipepsi Division
HFW: 1 win guarentees 1/2 in playoffs
2 wins guarentees first round bye or 1 win and a PIP loss
PIP: Win out and HFW lose 2+ games to get first round bye
To get second in division needs a better record than ITA
1 wins puts them in 7 win bracket
ITA: To get first in division needs to win out, HFW to lose out, and PIP lose 1 game
to get second in division needs to have the same record or better than PIP
2 wins puts team in 7 win bracket
LOL/BLP: winning out can put team in 6-6 (potential best of the rest seed)
Rhyhorn Steakhouse Division
There are so many varients of how this can go im only going to cover how each team can hit number 1 and get the first round bye
MID: Win out/ better record than BAL and the division will guarentee 1st round bye
2 wins guarentees 1/2 in division
BAL: win out = 2nd in division unless record tied with MID then 1
MIN: to get first win out, MID loses 2, BAL loses 1 and MIL loses 1
DCC: to get first win out, MID loses 2, MIN loses 1
MIL: to get frist win out, MID lose out, and DCC loses 1
AUK needs to win out get to 7-5 based off breakers it is very likely that 6-6 will not be good enough to make playoffs for AUK
To show how crazy this can get, after the next two weeks the rhyhorn steakhouse could have 5 teams with a 8-3 record. That would make it where a best of the rest team could have a better record than some of the divisional teams. This goes to show that the Rhyhorn steakhouse is not to be trifled with.
Trades
With only 2 weeks left for trades everyone seems to be slowing down as we only 1 trade this week
SLC Landorus-T T1 DEP Zygarde 50% DEP Zygarde 50% T1 SLC Landorus-T
The Salt Lake Combees trade Landorus-T to the Detroit Pyroars for Zygarde 50%. I think this can benefit both teams as they are trading 1 monster in the format for another. Both have a 4x ice weakness and can set up so there isnt much difference other than the utility of each mon which is up to the coaches to utilize.
Power Rankings with Geo
This is the last Power Rankings before the season ends and we make our final rankings so give it your all in the next 3 weeks and you might make your way into the top 10.
Clod9 Geo 1 Miami Delphox Columbus Gallades 2 Hartford Wailmers Miami Delphox 3 Columbus Gallades Hartford Wailmers 4 Baltimore Oricorios Baltimore Oricorios 5 Norwalk Nosepass DC Crobats 6 DC Crobats Miami Lanturn 7 Salt Lake Combees Blackfoot Scrafty 8 Minnesota Nidokings Norwalk Nosepass 9 Pittsburgh Piplups Salt Lake Combees 10 Miami Lanturn Minnesota Nidokings
There have been a lot of teams that have proved themselves over the past few weeks. DCC started 0-3 and is now 6-3 and near the top of the standings. This only goes to show that the season ends only when you give up and with hard work and determination you can make a difference and climb the ladder to the top of the league. This is just one success story of how teams are improving and that no one should be counted out until the final mon goes down. Keep up the good work and we will see you next week.
Interview with The Seth Vilo
This week I’m joined by the stall master himself Seth Vilo!
Clod9: Thank you Seth Vilo for joining us this week. Let’s start at the beginning: how did you prepare for this draft?
Seth Vilo: I prepared by doing thorough planning about this season’s evil plans. How would I change up my normal team strategy and keep it interesting? How could I resurrect Gen IV teams I had made so long ago? I had the plan ready for Draft Day, only to watch as the linchpins of Flygon and Scizor were taken from my evil grasp. Soooo I reverted to my normal team style with a couple fun new things. In picking the S-tier, I looked up at my girlfriend who was already bored of me staring at a computer for hours drafting, and asked “should I take the fluffy Dragon, or the jet plane Dragon?” So that’s how I started with Mega-Altaria. “Prep”.
C9: Has your team performed up to your standards so far?
SV: Yes and no. I had a lot of fun with it, which is what I was going for. Other than my battle against the utterly terrifying Fack Luigi, I never felt completely unprepared. There was always a way to wriggle out of something. My wave of trades the other week was just my mood shifting; I just really, really wanted to use Latias and Breloom all of a sudden and found a way how. I’m excited to see how they do in the last 3 battles!
C9: With only 3 games to go how do you think you will fare?
SV: I think I’ll do decently! As I write this, I’m pondering how to prep against you, actually, which is my next battle at time of writing. With a few losses under my belt, I feel a lot less pressure on myself to do well, and can have more fun. It’s almost freeing, and I’m really excited!!
C9: Who are/were you most looking forward to battling this season? SV: Goodness, I’m gunna sounds like a suck-up but I really just enjoy battling anyone I’m matched up with! Newer players and older players alike, I just like having fun. That being said, I am excited to exact my revenge on Zcron…
C9: I know I’m looking forward to battling you this week,  are there any hints you want to give the readers about our match up? SV: THE EON TWIN SHOWDOWN! Who will come out on top?? PLAAAACE YOUR BETS! But in all seriousness, I’m hoping to pull a couple secret fun ideas out of my bag of evil tricks [evil laugh].
C9: Where were/are you least looking forward to battling this season?
SV: Oh, so many people… Namely: anyone in my division, my inconsistent Wifi, the battery on my 3DS that I had to replace, even myself on what Silvally to pick this week. Did I mention my whole division? Cause my whole division. RHYHORN STEAKHOUSE!!!!
C9: Why did you choose the team name, Miami Lanturns? SV: Here we go! I was Googling team names I could manipulate back in Season 1. I stumbled upon the Miami Dolphins logo, and with my newfound Photoshop skills took on the project of replacing the dolphin with a favorite of mine, Lanturn. I did that, and here we are! The logo you’re seeing was redone by the amazing Ozzy, cause mine was…. Too close to the original to put on a shirt.
C9: Were there any secret techs that you brought for your matchups that you didn’t get to showcase? SV: There were a few scattered here and there of me trying to be super clever. I had a Rowap + Rain Dance Milotic against Fack Luigi, Ditto strategy in general, and even random Mirror Coat and Magic Coat on some sneaky things. Often, Silvally is my tech I bring that is least used, which is actually physically painful to type as that’s my second favorite Pokemon.
C9: Who would you say is the mon you are most excited to use on your team this year? SV: Well, given I made a billion trades the other week, right now I’d answer this question with Latias and Breloom. They are another two of my favorites and I’m super excited to find fun ways to play them. What’s that? Why yes I completed that “Favorite of Each Type” chart recently and that’s how I know this, thanks for asking!
C9: You are currently in the most brutal division with 5 of the 6 teams still in contention for number 1. How do you think your division will end up? Where do you think you will fall?
SV: RHYHORN STEAKHOUSE REPRESENT!!!! Bow before us and tremble in fear! Even if I didn’t end up contributing much except 84-turn battles… I think it’ll be decent for the Miami Lanturns, but not as strong as I’ve done before. Both good and bad, as I said earlier. With every loss brings more memes…
C9: Let’s learn about you as a Pokemon Fan. When did you start listening to PUCL?
SV: I started listening to PUCL in about February of 2017. Having gotten into the TCG heavily at the time, I was looking for something else to fill the long car rides of work. I happened upon the Sun / Moon TCG Review episode, and have been hooked ever since.
C9:What Pokemon generation did you start with?
SV: Gen 1 all the way boi!! I started on a Pokemon Blue Version that I got for Christmas one year, bundled with a brand new GameBoy. The rest is history.
C9: What is your favorite region?
SV: Hoenn all the way. Kanto is boring, Johto is okay but never really stuck for me. My most formative years in Pokemon was Ruby and Sapphire. That was also when both me and my siblings could play, what with them being old enough to speak and all, so it unlocked more levels of fun (and getting my butt handed to me by my brother’s Flygon, DARKNESS). I love the trumpets, I love the color, I love the plants, I LOVE THE WATER, and I love the pokemon introduced. #GEN3BESTGEN
C9: Who is your favorite Pokemon?
SV: Sableye all the way. It’s the Stitch of Pokemon.
C9: If you had to pick: Attack or Special Attack?
SV: It’s really mixed here… For setup, Attack all the way. The moves are so much better and more threatening. But for general nuking, (almost) nothing is better than clicking Draco Meteor and watching the opponent be reduced to a fine red mist. If I had a Remoraid to my head, I’d probably say Special Attack.
C9: What is your battle style:  Stall/Hyper Offense/Bulky Offense/Balance?
SV: Haha. But honestly, I’m not the “STALL” player I’m made out to be, says the defendant from the stand. My teams usually start with an endgame sweeper of some sort that is bulky (Zygarde, Latias-M, Clefable, etc), than a stupid bulky core is built around them. My end-game is always to whittle, and then sweep. But if you can’t break past my defensive line and I don’t have to lift a finger, that’s fine by me!
C9: Do you prefer Speed or Trick Room?
SV: Probably Trick Room, While I like a lot of fast things, it’s not my usual style. Stakatakatakatakatakataka is really fun to use, and I like generally turning the tables Old-Man’s-Chess-Game-Before-A-Bug’s-Life style.
C9: What is your favorite Weather; Hail/Sand/Rain or Sun?
SV: Rain all the way, both in Pokemon and IRL. #BackInGen5, Rain + Volcarona was one of my favorite teams to run.
C9: Electric/Misty/Grassy or Psychic Terrain?
SV: As the Grass-type gym leader, I am contractually obligated to say Grassy Terrain. It also happens to be my favorite outside of contract.
C9: Favorite status to inflict: Sleep/Freeze/Paralysis/Burn or Poison?
SV: That’s a tough battle between Burn and Badly Poisoned. I love both, Poison for “stalling”, and Burn because of its Attack-drop utility. Again with a Remoraid to my head, probably Burn.
C9: Have you watched the Pokemon anime? If yes, what is your favorite Theme song?
SV: I have watched the anime, but really need to watch it more because what I’ve seen of Sun and Moon is incredible. But question two, is that even a question? Original all the way!
C9: You are one of the Gym leaders for the PUCL Summer League, what encouraging words do you have for any potential battlers?
SV: Have fun! The Gym Leader team is all really excited to get this Summer going, and feel free to ask questions and battle again and again! The whole goal is to have fun.
To wrap up, I shall quote the encouraging words of Keldeo, “Fite me.”
C9: Thank you once again for joining us this week! Good luck in your future battles! That’s all the time we have this week. See y’all again next time!

The Top 5 Must Play RPGs for Every Video Game Console

The Top 5 Must Play RPGs for Every Video Game Console
The gaming market is monstrous. Right now there are six consoles, three handhelds, and the ever present PC you can buy games for. That’s 10 different ways you can get your game on, so if you’re someone who doesn’t have the ways or means to buy all 10 platforms and every halfway decent game that arrives for any of them, you’re probably wondering which way you should go to get the most bang for your buck. I’m a bit of a gamer nerd, and so for you, I’ve collected the top five available games (in the stores now) for each console for each particular genre.
Nowadays there are hundreds of options out there, and the Japanese market isn’t the only one around. North American companies have their own answers to the RPG boom and now it’s a veritable flood of options. Here are the top five for each option you’ve got.
PlayStation 2 – The PlayStation brand name has been the home of quality RPGs since PS1 first rolled out with Suikoden and Final Fantasy games in the mid- the 90s. This list was hard because there are so many left off. Dark Cloud 2, Final Fantasy X, the Shin Megami Tensei games and much more deserve recognition, but alas these are also long as hell, so if you had more than 5, when would you ever finish them. You may notice I exclude the PS3, but I can’t really offer any PS3 RPGs for you until they’ve actually been created. We’re waiting.
1. Shadow Hearts Covenant – The Shadow Hearts series took on a serious following after this entry, one of the greatest RPG releases of the generation. It’s taken on the fantasy RPG genre blended into the realms of reality, bleeding over in church and demonology lore. Taking place in the 19th Century and following the legend of a young woman and her unfortunate destiny, it can be enjoyed alone or along with its predecessors Koudelka and Shadow Hearts (I).
2. Disgaea – This is probably the best strategy RPG released for any console ever. And it’s funnier than hell. These are great characters.
3. Suikoden III – The Suikoden series is the cult series. Of course, it’s slowly sliding out of cult status and into the mainstream with releases occurring every couple of years since this one. The best in the series with the possible exception of Suikoden II, Suikoden III tells the story of a huge cast of characters, all intricately entwined with one another. You play through the tale of their war, but as seen through the eyes of each character. Truly epic.
4. Final Fantasy XII – The newest release, released only two weeks before the PlayStation 3’s release, this game redefines the epic scope of prior Final Fantasies, literally reaching for the stars. Each character is fully realized and a part of the action, their story an intricate part of the game. There’s no fluff here, and the rebuild of the decades-old RPG formula was all for the better, working for the complete and total betterment of the game and hopefully the series.
5. DragonQuest VIII – Dragon Quest has always been huge in Japan, but only now did it find the same success here in the US. Dragon Quest VIII is the huge (extremely huge) result of Square Enix’s jump to full 3D glory in their series. The graphics are incredible, the characters hilarious and deeply involving, and the story arresting. The battles aren’t half bad either. And the usual monster catching glory is intact. A long game, it will keep you busy for days.
Gamecube (and Wii) – The Gamecube got shorted on the RPG options, much like its big brother the N64. Nintendo lost a lot of their clout with the RPG crowd when Squaresoft jumped ship in the 90s and they’re still trying to earn it back…so far to little success. But, the future looks bright, as Square Enix is finally producing games for the Big N, and Nintendo’s own work includes more forays into the RPG market. Here’s hoping for more, because the Wii is perfect for the format.
1. Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess – The newest Zelda adventure, Twilight Princess, is by far the best reason to own a Nintendo Wii. The game is a masterpiece on almost every level, to the point I’m almost willing to call it the greatest game ever made. We’ve heard this a lot, that this game is the greatest. That it surpasses what Ocarina accomplished 8 years ago. And as my own favorite game, it’s hard to ever put anything above Ocarina in terms of scope, depth, and innovation. No need to go into detail. Read my review of it here for more thoughts on why it’s so amazing.
2. Tales of Symphonia – The first really good RPG for the Gamecube, and still one of the only ones really. The newest entry in the hugely popular (in Japan) Tales saga, Symphonia was a huge, fun, well-told game. The characters were fun, the battle system is one of the best around, and the action was fully inclusive and crafted a long game. Symphonia was the Gamecube owning RPG fan’s one saving grace.
3. Skies of Arcadia Legends – Originally released for the Dreamcast, Skies of Arcadia was given a second life on the Gamecube, again fated to anonymity due to the failure of the console. This is a great game. It tells the story of two sky pirates who must traverse the sky ocean and save the world from a shattering war and so on. You attempt throughout the game to build your pirate rank and build up your ship. It was one of Dreamcast’s must have games and the same for Gamecube. Unfortunately so few actually had it, and now it’s not exactly easy to find.
4. Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker – The infamous Wind Waker. Nintendo’s foray into cell shading and the horrible foray into ocean mechanics. This game is still amazing. It’s Zelda after all, but it’s flawed on more than the basic levels. It’s hard to get around. The ocean is huge, and the game is short. But the parts you play, in between sailing around Hyrule are beautiful and incredibly fun.
5. Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door – The Big N rounds out the five with another in-house effort. Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door was a return to the Paper Mario fun they coined in the N64 days, this time around with the RPG elements the game seems to work best with. Incredibly easy yes, but fun as hell at the same time.
Xbox (and X360) – The Xbox, not surprisingly saw no Japanese development. Every game listed below was produced in English Speaking countries, mostly Canada actually. The style is noticeably different, but the quality is equally incredible. The strive for realism by Western developers can be seen in each of these entries. Although the lack of humor is equally as prescient.
1. Elderscrolls IV: Oblivion – The Xbox 360 has some serious horsepower. Not only is there room to spare, but the graphic output is insane at the time, and what better way to show this off than with an Elderscrolls game. Monstrous, huge worlds in which you can freely roam wherever you want and interact with your environment. This game is huge and intense. Hundreds of hours can be spent just wandering around and completing the main quest. As for getting the rest done. Who knows how long you could spend on there.
2. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic – Star Wars games were starting to get a bad rap for a while until Bioware arrived with the first full-fledged Star Wars RPG. Built on the click and wait for the action of the D&D ruleset games, KOTOR was a brilliant game that took Star Wars fans back a few thousand years to the height of the Jedi/Sith wars. It also had one of the most surprising and amazing endings in any game..ever.
3. Elderscrolls III: Morrowind – And another Elder scrolls game. This one was equally as huge as its sequel and had just as amazing graphics for its time. Elderscrolls truly stretches the imagination in terms of open world RPG exploration and making a game that will take a long time to finish. A truly wonderful game.
4. Jade Empire – Set in a fictional ancient China, Jade Empire comes from the makers of Knights of the Old Republic, and while not nearly as large in scope or length, the game utilizes an array of different combat styles and elements that make it sheer fun to play. It’s shorter and simpler than the original games from Bioware, but they make up for it with the attention to detail and the battle system upgrades.
5. Fable – Touted as an amazing achievement in world interface, Fable turned out to be a little bit of a letdown. It was smaller, shorter, and less engaging than what was claimed, but it was still a solid, fun game to play. Starting as a bland adventure you could become either entirely good or entirely evil through the actions committed during a quest. The characters are generic, the quests forgettable, but the options given to play through them all are still fun. The ending, however, leaves something to be desired, and they could have done with a few more reasons to openly explore. For a sandbox RPG, it was surprisingly linear.
Game Boy Advance – Yup, no DS games. I imagine soon, with the release of the new Pokemon game, and the surprising announcement of Dragon Quest IX coming exclusively to the DS, the RPG options there will explode, but for now your best bet in the RPG realm on handhelds is with the Game Boy Advance. Here are a few of the best.
1. Golden Sun – It’s not a masterpiece. It’s not legendary. But, it’s good solid fun, and for the size and expectations o f a handheld console it’s still pretty fun. I enjoyed it for a few reasons. First off, the gameplay is top notch. The battle system is built around a simple premise and sticks with it, but it’s still fun. The story is nothing special but it reminded me a lot of the 8-bit glory days, keeping me involved without making it impossible to keep up when I have to turn the game off every 20 minutes. Solid play and go action
2. Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire – Pokemon has been around for almost 10 years now, a regular entry in the Gameboy RPG market, really the only entry in that market, and a damn good one. By the time this pair was released (the usual duplicate games with slightly different monsters in each), the same gameplay was reused a good four times and starting to get a little old, but it’s still sound gameplay, and who doesn’t like to collect as much of something as they can. I’m older yes, but I still enjoy the mindless capture and battle system of Pokemon. It’s cathartically simple.
3. Final Fantasy IV – It’s technically a port, but a damn good port at that. I loved this game back in the days on the SNES and the idea to bring the 16-bit Final Fantasies to the GBA made me as happy as can be. This was a game I love to play, but feel goofy loading into my PS2 and sitting down to play. It’s a perfect bus play, and it plays just as great as in 1992. The classic tale of Cecil and the Red Knights never fails to capture my attention from start to finish. Of course, when Final Fantasy VI is released, I might have to replace this with that one, as we all know that VI is the greatest of them all.
4. Riviera: The Promised Land – Atlus has been bashing the PS2 market with top notch games for three plus years now, with their fantastic strategy and alchemy RPG games. They bring Riviera to the GBA with the same pedigree, a solid RPG that plays to the GBA’s strengths as well as any. It’s essentially a screen to screen game. You don’t control your surroundings so much as go from page to page within them, but the battle system is amazing and the different options and acquires immense. The story, like any Atlus game, is the real selling point and actually got me to play through it twice.
5. Final Fantasy Tactics – The portable version of the PSone classic has sucked more time from my life than any GBA game I’ve ever played. The 300+ missions are each 30-60 minutes long and the customization options equal length. This is a long game with a lot of gameplay and a fun little story. You’re Marche, you’ve been sucked into a book into the magical land of Ivalice and now you are a knight. Go!
PlayStation Portable – When the PSP first released fanboys dreamed of amazing ports that would bring their favorite games now out of print back to life in handheld format. At least one made the leap, but for the most part, RPG development on the PSP has been lackluster, and while Japan gets the Suikoden I and II pack and promises of Final Fantasies, we wait for a decent anything to play. Final Fantasy compilation anyone? Anyone at all?
1. Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth – One of the most sought after games from the PSone days, Valkyrie Profile was an amazing RPG that no one played and then no one could play as it was out of print. Ranging from $100 and up on eBay, the promise of a re-release for the PSP was a godsend for fans out there always interested but too poor to afford it. It’s a solid game at that. With rebuilt cinematics and PSP controls, this entry leads into the new PS2 game wonderfully and finally lets the rest of us play through Lenneth’s adventure.
2. Monster Hunter Freedom – Never a real big fan of the Monster Hunter games, I can still see their draw. You go and you hunt monsters. Simple as that. There’s little to hold you up, and there’s online play. It’s like Pokemon without the pesky storyline or purpose.
3. Ys: The Ark of Napishtim – A port of a port. This was originally released for the PS2 and before that, the PC, and has been watered down in between. The same classic Ys gameplay is intact, overland map, onscreen battles and fun little characters in a charming, if simple story. It’s good solid fun for a portable and tells a decent story. Even if the controls are a little broken.
4. Untold Legends: Brotherhood of the Blade – One of the launch releases with the PSP, Untold Legends is an overhead hack and slash RPG without a conscious. It doesn’t strive for amazing storyline or gameplay, just simple hack and slashes glory and it does it pretty well. It was fun because it was simple, made in a very short development cycle from the time the PSP was announced. Oddly enough, though, the sequel was nearly as good.
5. Tales of Eternia – Alright, technically it still hasn’t been released in America, but you can import it from Europe and play the English language version (or Japan if you speak Japanese). But, it’s a tales game, a pretty good one at that. Technically it has been released here too, as Tales of Destiny 2 in 2000. Unfortunately, it got completely ignored as the gaming world moved on to the PS2. This is a great game though and perfect for the PSP. Complete and intact are the great Tales battle system and one of the better Tales plots. Saving the world from the Great War was never quite so fun as in this one.
PC -The PC has always been a home for the more hardcore of gamers. The cost of constant upgrades and intensity of a PC game are legendary, and only the most hardcore amongst us are capable of keeping up. Accordingly, the games below match that mindset, though more than one of these games managed to break free of the limitations and become monstrous worldwide phenomena. I’m looking at you Blizzard.
1. World of Warcraft – Okay, so duh right? Well, some of you are probably palpitating over my choosing this above some other MMORPG, but too bad. Everyone plays this one, including myself and it’s just plain fun. Having spent hours of my life in this game and knowing that I can go back whenever I want without fear of being destroyed because of the MMORPG laws of survival (never leave), this is a great pick up and play a game in a genre where that almost never exists. Huge, tons to do, and always fun even when you’re grinding, WoW is still the best.
2. Baldur’s Gate 2: Shadows of Amn – The Baldur’s Gate games are some of the best RPGs to come out of the PC age of D&D ruleset RPGs. It’s big, it’s long, it’s fun as hell. The challenge of figuring out what to do, how to upgrade your characters and make the game the most it can be were always the number one reasons to play these. The story is pretty awesome too. Don’t forget the Dragon. That dragon is a bitch.
3. Diablo II – Diablo II stole my entire summer my sophomore year of high school. This game was amazing. It took everything Diablo did and blew it up times ten. The ability to find and receive unique weapons that 1000 of your friends would never find kept you playing over and over again. And it was simple. Click, click, right click. F1. That’s it. Nothing to it. And when you finally unlocked the Cow level, then you were the true God of Diablo.
4. Elderscrolls IV: Oblivion – Many of you probably can’t even play this yet. I still can’t. I only know of it because I have a friend who upgrades his computer ever three weeks seemingly. This game is a beast of the highest order, demanding a lot from your system but delivering even more. Monstrous, huge worlds in which you can freely roam wherever you want and interact with your environment. This game is huge and intense. Hundreds of hours can be spent just wandering around and completing the main quest. As for getting the rest done. Who knows how long you could spend on there.
5. Neverwinter Nights – Another D&D ruleset game, but one of the best no less. It’s huge, monstrously huge. And tack on the expansions and you’ve got 200+ hours of action to play through. The biggest seller on this one though was the ability to craft and write your own adventures as a DM with the toolsets and host them online, ala D&D, but with graphics. The sequel doesn’t quite hold up to the original, but still, carries the same weight and fun factor.
I’m a self-avowed unemployed writer, working on a semi-constant basis to try and overcome the need to go and work a real job.
