hi any advice for a person who's trying to become a professional artist? everywhere I look in any art adjacent industry people are losing their jobs left and right,being underpaid or are freelancing while working a side job,I swear the only ppl doing well are the ai art bitches…I feel like I'm aboard a sinking ship 🥲🫠

I applied to multiple postings yesterday and honestly I don't know anymore 🫠

The illustrator + 2D generalist + concept artist hiring pools are pretty full right now with all the layoffs

Without connections or an insane online following idk how students and entry-level folks are supposed to make it anymore

Recommendations through positive word-of-mouth from my previous clients has been keeping me afloat so far + commissions + patreon, and I'm blessed with a super supportive parent; if I didn't have those things — and if I was able or willing to do a 9-to-5 office job— I would not be in a position to handle this

And honestly AI is a huge issue, don't get me wrong, but it plays a small part of why these creative industries are collapsing.

It's the unforgiving hours, the low pay, the burnout, the layoffs disrupting entire chains of communication, sudden project cancellations due to trend-chasing and investor expectations and internal politics, the looming uncertainty of the future. The unsustainable profit-first infrastructure is just finally buckling I fear.

Possible workaround: pop off as a fan artist and build a following large enough to subsist on subscriptions. Make a new draw-with-me tiktok every other day and/or stream for five to eight hours a day three times a week. I am in no way joking about this. It's a lot of work to get there but at least it yields consistent results. 🧍🏾‍♀️

#it’s okay that I’m not producing anything #it’s enough to eat a cookie and play a cute video game rn #pots #postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome #chronic illness #I remember when I got diagnosed in 2008 #early early diagnosis #I had gone all the way to mayo clinic in february to get diagnosed #I’d been trying to get diagnosed for about a decade in two states by this point #and many of those doctors had told my parents to take me to a therapist not a doctor #bc sometimes teenage girls are just melodramatic #I’d heard it ALL #all the judgment and blame and accusations #and I get to Mayo #they dx me in like an hour #they give me an info sheet #the first line is THIS IS NOT IN YOUR HEAD #and I remember sitting there in the pediatric ward #and just sobbing my eyes out #you have no idea how much I needed to hear that #and I guess the reminder is still nice sometimes

when it comes to mental illness, you can never please anyone. you're either mentally ill and do your best to not be a victim and to cope and grow, and then ppl act like you're not mentally ill and dismiss your genuine issues, or you make a big deal of it and harm ppl and yourself with it and then you're too much to handle. like what's gonna make ppl happy? what will make them validate your position in life? literally nothing.

#ive been medicated since i was 14 #and have heen suicidal since i was 14 #i put in so much effort to combat my mental illness so i can just live a happy life #where i dont want to die 24/7 #and where i can relax and appreciate my life etc #and bc i put so much effort in to coping and healing and growing #ppl just dismiss that im genuinely mentally ill #what do u want from me?#do u want me to have breakdowns and abuse people?#do you want me to make life hard for others and myself?#when will i ever get recognized for fighting so fucking hard for myself?#ppl only care when youre negatively effecting them and then #they use it as an excuse to dismiss your reality and hard work #idk man #im not saying i have mental illness and disability to be cute and quirky #im saying that bc ive been in and out of the doctors since i was 14 and have been diagnosed by #several different doctors all with the same diagnosis'#i have incurable mental disorders from taking medication that #kept me from killing myself but gave me massive dissociation #its not a joke and its not for attention #i don't even rlly talk about it unless i have to remind ppl that im not normal like they are #and stop writing off ppl who are good representations of strength and growth within their mental illnesses #we exist and we should be given more recognition so other ppl in our situations can see an example of someone #coexisting with their issues in a more healthy manner

And then proceed to make fun of autistic people stimming in a way that's not the most stereotypical or common form of stimming simply because "it's weird" even though they could just look away and it wouldn't be a problem anymore

There's unfortunately a tendency in a number of parents to not really see younger children as people. They ignore the personalities of little kids as being just that (personalities), instead writing them off as "cute child behavior." Then, when those kids turn into "people" (teenagers), parents act shocked/betrayed/disappointed because what. Since when do their offspring have personalities of their own? Since when are they individuals that exist separate from their parents?

When parents insist that their kids completely changed with puberty, it's rarely (if ever) a case of the teen actually changing. It's usually a case of the kid finally getting old enough/big enough/loud enough that they can't be ignored and written off as a cute accessory. If your parent thinks your personality did a complete about-face when you hit your teen years, chances are there's nothing inherently different about you—your parent just hasn't had the respect for you that they should have had from the start.

Your personality hasn't changed. Your parent just can't ignore that you have one anymore.

one thing about lorillee she will be thinking about drunk karaoke night.

ino and sai organize (mostly ino). guest list and general info:

ino- very comfortable to be singing in front of other people, pretty good but not knock out of the park good (she thinks she is though and sai agrees), very encouraging about bringing other people up to sing with her if they're nervous/reluctant

sai- not great on account of his monotony, but his duet with ino is cute because she's obviously very grandiose and excited with it and sai is more lowkey but if you know him you can tell he's having just as much fun as she is. was a bit uncertain at the idea at first but ino was very encouraging and excited about it.

sakura- gung-ho. not a good singer. keeps it chill at the start, goes harder the drunker she gets. shows up in a bad mood (as she often is) but by the end she's having the time of her life.

sasuke- ino tells sakura DO NOT BRING THAT DEAD WEIGHT OF A HUSBAND!!!! you deserve some time to let loose!!! but sasuke still shows up for some reason. he doesnt say anything he just sits at the back and makes everyone sort of uncomfortable until they eventually forget he's there. disappears midway through the night.

temari- reluctant to make a fool of herself. ino has to drag her up. only does one song, starts out very reserved but is belting by the end. very average singer. drinks enough to let loose a little, but she's responsible.

shikamaru- very light drinker because he prefers to keep his wits about him. came because he does enjoy spending time with everyone and doesn't NOT want to see his friends singing shitty songs, but is reluctant to make a fool of himself and has no desire to participate. ino and chouji drag him up and sing with enough spirit for the three of them (shikamaru never takes his hands out of his pockets the whole time he's on stage). he's not really trying in order to spare his ego, but it sort of sounds like he could be secretly good. is he secretly good??? we don't know. ino would like to know. shikamaru sing another one PLEASE how about this song, you love this song! but he says nope. that's all you're getting out of me.

hinata- very nervous but desperately wants to participate. drinks a lot because that's the only way she can get over her nerves. has a lot of fun. pretty terrible singer.

naruto- gung-ho. fucking loves it. sucks ass at singing but he's not gonna let that stop him. drinks probably too much. disappears midway through the night.

chouji (karui does not go because she fucking hates sasuke and naruto both)- eager to have fun and willing to make a fool of himself and more importantly of shikamaru, but also takes his solo very very seriously

I purchased decent noise cancelling headphones and suddenly managed to go through the untidy thrift store and a really busy mall (some kind of birthday thing. the mall's birthday. i got a free yoghurt and 4 slabs of chocolate for 8€) without feeling like tearing my hair out.
