Threads, worms and science communication
I thought I had written my last post about epigenetics. But then came along some ‘worms’ and I had to write another one.
I have written about worms once before on the Making Science Public blog, in the context of science communication. And this blog post too will reflect on worms in the context of science communication, but in a slightly different context.
In 2014, when I wrote my first worm post, twitter was eight years old but still evolving. Now we live in a twitterverse where science communicators can use ‘threads’, launched at the end of 2017, to knit together tweets into a science story. Some of the best science communication now happens in ‘threads’. And this is what happened on this occasion.
So what am I talking about? On 6 June a research group working in Tel Aviv around Oded Rechavi published an article in Cell entitled “Neuronal Small RNAs Control Behavior Transgenerationally”. The gist of the article was this, as summarised in the abstract: “In Caenorhabditis elegans nematodes, parental responses can transmit heritable small RNAs that regulate gene expression transgenerationally. In this study, we show that a neuronal process can impact the next generations.”
So the hero of the study is C. elegans, the worm of wonder I had talked about in my previous blog, but not in the context of epigenetics. What has this to do with epigenetics?
Worms and epigenetics
Epigenetics is a new field in genetics and genomics, which came to prominence around the year 2000 and about which I have written since 2013. It is still finding its feet and it is still struggling with definitions and concepts. One of the most contested notions is that of ‘transgenerational epigenetic inheritance’. This phenomenon has been observed in plants, worms and some rodents, but there is, as yet, no clear evidence that it exists in mammals/humans.
In an important article summarising some myths surrounding epigenetics, Edith Heard, a renowned epigenetics researcher, pointed out: “Since the human genome was sequenced, the term ‘epigenetics’ is increasingly being associated with the hope that we are more than just the sum of our genes. Might what we eat, the air we breathe, or even the emotions we feel influence not only our genes but those of descendants?” This is at the core of speculations surrounding epigenetics and transgenerational epigenetic inheritance.
The worm study that caught my eye has to be seen in this context. It was announced under headlines such as “Worm parents pass on behaviours epigenetically to offspring”.
Even one of the most sceptical observers of research into transgenerational epigenetic inheritance, Kevin Mitchell, tweeted: “Some real transgenerational epigenetics… (in worms)”.
He also retweeted a ‘thread’ by the group leader, Oded Rechavi, which was a masterpiece of science communication, both verbal and visual – indeed, threading them both creatively together. We’ll come to that in a minute.
Epigenetic worms in the media
How was the study reported in the ‘mainstream media’? I had a quick look and found only four articles, all published in Israeli news outlets. I tracked down a few more on Google News. Here are some of the headlines in the print media: “Israeli study: Nervous system can transmit messages to future generations”; “Israel study says neurons, not just DNA, can affect progeny’s fate”; “Researchers say nervous system passes info to kids”; “Worms help Israeli scientists rewrite basics of genetics”.
Two things struck me: first the use of anthropomorphic terms like ‘kids’, a type of language that can create the wrong expectations, and the claim that this study overthrows basic genetics. This claim came also up in an online article on Breaking Israel News entitled “Small worms help Israeli researchers disprove basic dogma of modern biology”. This article was, I believe, the press release for the Cell study and contains a great artistic illustration of worms. It was picked up by eurekalert, where Rechavi is quoted as saying “It’s important to stress that we don’t know yet whether any of this translates to humans”.
In the past, some epigeneticists and philosophers of science have made claims about epigenetics overthrowing basic biology, claims that were greeted mainly with scepticism by other scientists.
Three other online articles reported on the study, one published in The Scientist and dryly entitled: “Worm parents pass on behaviors epigenetically to offspring”; one in Psychology Today seeing it as ‘disruptive’ to biology and neuroscience, and one in the Big Think linking it to ‘reincarnation’ (tongue in cheek)! There may be more. But let’s get to the thread.
Twitter threads
According to Twitter, “[a] thread on Twitter is a series of connected Tweets from one person. With a thread you can provide additional context, an update, or an extended point by connecting multiple Tweets together.”
Here is a random example of a ‘thread’ – there are longer and more extravagant ones out there. This one is about Mayan hieroglyphics, which I loved (it’s linked to a fantastic podcast). You can click on it and see how it goes…
Knitting a science story using words and images
So, what about this worm thread then, which got 423 retweets and 1,156 likes? Rechavi posted it in the afternoon of 6 June, just after his lab’s article came out in Cell. It starts with a bit of a firework of emojis, hashtags, and hyperlinks.
The hashtag uses a well-established epigenetic metaphor. The accompanying image (called ‘a summary model’ in the thread) provides an overview of the ‘flow’ of signals/memory, I suppose, between neurons, germline and behaviour.
The second tweet congratulates all the team members and especially the artist who created the illustration for the press release Beata Edyta Mierzwa and reproduces the sci-art image. See here. I think the image represents a tree of life/arteries of life populated by worms with little epigenetic ‘tags’ or post-it notes attached to them… but I might be wrong.
The third tweet writes about long-standing speculations about inheritance and is illustrated by a photo of a Greek statue representing a thinker. It ends by stressing: “But transgenerational epigenetic inheritance is still extremely controversial, especially in mammals”.
The fourth tweet goes into this controversy in a bit more detail, saying: “The reason it’s controversial is that there’s no good mechanism that can explain it. It was hypothesized a long time ago (19th century) that the germline is isolated from the soma, and that somatic responses (including neuronal responses) cannot become heritable”. The work presented in the thread puts forward a candidate mechanism.
This tweet is illustrated with a photo of the front cover of August Weismann’s seminal book The Germplasm – a theory of heredity (published in 1893). This tweet relates to what some news articles reported, such as one in the Big Think that stated: “Rechavi believes this research pushes back against biological dogma (the ‘Weissmann Barrier’) claiming that heritable information is segregated from somatic influences.” This seems to be much less cautious than the tweet, probably because it’s based on the ‘press release’.
As there are 17 tweets in this thread, I won’t summarise each one of them. Let’s just say each tweet is a combination of text and image. It uses images of many types and genres, such a diagrams, various plots and scatter grams, cartoons, microscopy images, photos, and so on..
However, I want to point out one more tweet, not for its image but for its text, as it engages in anthropomorphic language (also used in some headlines) which might confuse people and make them think that transgenerational epigenetic inheritance has also been demonstrated in humans:
“MORE interestingly, if rde-4 great-grandchildren are derived from heterozygous great-grandparents that expressed rde-4 only in neurons, their chemotaxis behavior is much improved. The ancestors’ neurons control the behavior of the great-grandchildren”
Reception
The response to the thread was overwhelmingly positive with lots of tweets expressing congratulations. One tweet posted a compiled thread on something called ‘threader’, which you can read here. And there is an ‘unroll’ here on a thread reader.
You can also read the compiled text of the tweets on Reddit. There are only a few comments related to that text, but three of them are interesting. One continues the anthropomorphising of the worms and creates a great metaphor: “Grandpa worm sent a zip file of worm behavior instructions to grandbaby worm”.
Two others jump into a controversy surrounding transgenerational epigenetic inheritance that been reverberating through popular science for a while: “Lamarckism wasn’t as wrong as we thought.” While somebody else says (in a longer comment): “I definitely don’t want to dismiss this but I dont know if I’d call this ‘heritable’ in the same way DNA is heritable.” Discuss!
A new type of science communication
The worm study has provided me with a great opportunity to learn about threads and to alert readers of the Making Science Public blog to the fact that there are now new ways of making science public, using the old art of intertwining words and images (see also GIFs), texts and illustrations, art and science.
There is no yet a lot of research out there examining the use of twitter threads for science communication. I found one SciCommthreads hashtag on threads, but that’s about it. There must be more!
On a different but related note: I am looking forward to a new little project with Aleksandra Stelmach and Alan-Miguel Valdez examining the power of images in the construction of popular notions of transgenerational epigenetic inheritance.

5. New Delhi: "Don't make Prashant Bhushan a martyr. Remember, after this court jailed Kalyan Singh in Babri Masjid contempt case for a day, he had received a rousing reception when released from the jail. So don't make Bhushan a martyr," thundered Rajeev Dhawan, Prashant Bhushan's lawyer.
Sometime later, Justice Arun Mishra, heading the SC bench asked why can't Bhushan apologise? Is an apology such a bad word?. If you have hurt somebody's feelings, it is normal to apply the balm. Even Gandhi had apologised so many times."
These exchanges at the fag end of the two-hour-long proceeding sums up the tone and tenor of the hearing of arguments in the Bhushan contempt case. The bench was hearing arguments before deciding the quantum of punishment to be awarded to Bhushan found guilty on August 14 of criminal contempt for his two tweets against present Chief Justice S A Bobde and last four CJIs.
The SC said that the tweets based on distorted facts were a "scurrilous and malafide" attack on the institution of SC which destabilized the foundation of the judiciary.
After concluding the hearing, the SC reserved its verdict. At the outset, the bench said that they had gone through the latest statement of Bhushan in which he refused to apologize unconditionally.
"We were expecting him to do something but that has not happened," the bench said. Attorney General K K Venugopal reiterated his stand that SC should close the chapter after the guilty order and should not punish him or sentence him considering his pro-bono work and his achievement in the arena of Public Interest Litigation.
"Your Lordship may forgive him. Let him off with a warning," the AG said adding "As Mr Bhushan said, even retired SC judges have made such comments and can we haul them up for contempt?"
AG also referred to the famous press conference called by four sitting judges in which they said: "democracy is in danger." Just close the matter by telling him to not repeat this," AG urged.
Repeatedly going through the tweets and two statements made in court by Bhushan, Justice Mishra said that Bhushan should at least realise his mistake and say sorry. AG repeated, "I'm speaking for the Bar. Take a compassionate stand. Let him off with a warning."
While replying to this, Justce Mishra said, "We judges can talk through our judgements only. We cannot come out in public and respond to the attacks or criticism. But he has made very derogatory remarks."
AG added at this juncture, saying, "He has expressed regret in the 2009 matter. Let him say this in the present matter too and say he expresses regret. That will be the statesmanship."
Justice Mishra further replying by saying, "Learned AG, please read his reply. See what he has said, Supreme Court has collapsed. Isn't that objectionable? There is a positive part of the statement by Prashant Bhushan in which he says he has faith in this institution. But at the same time he says, he won't apologise since be hasn't made any mistake. Everyone makes mistake but the person must also realise it. What to do now?"
Referring to the guilty verdict, Dhawan said, "Offence of Scandalising the court is subjective and same goes with finding that he committed a scurrilous and malicious attack."
Bhushan's comments should be taken in a positive manner and for the betterment of the judiciary, Dhawan said and urged the curt to take the tweets and his statements as constructive criticism."He has always been a loyal officer of the court. All his tweets are based on his bonafide belief," Dhawan said.
"An apology cannot be a mere incantation, an apology has to be sincerely made and he(Bhushan) sincerely says that "this is my belief." he said, adding, "If your Lordships initiate contempt, am I not supposed to offer my defence. And he (Bhushan) has systematically offered a defence for each of the statements (in tweets) made by him."
"This court can only survive on the basis of strong criticism," said Dhavan. "All his tweets and statements were opinions made in good faith," he added.
"Similar statements were made by Retd. Justices Lokur, A P Shah Kurian Joseph. Are they also in contempt?" Dhavan further asked. He further said, "This court can even make statesman like a message to all lawyers like "in future be a little restrained in your attack and before you do that be sure with the facts."
"Please show statesmanship and close the case. If you want to impose a jail term, my advice would be don't make Prashant Bhushan a martyr. Like what happened after Babri was demolished & Kalyan Singh was convicted of contempt." he said.
Dhavan said this controversy will end only if this court shows statesmanship. Justice Mishra, towards the end of the hearing, said, "By the way, I want to say all of you lawyers should not be going to press in pending matters. An officer of a court is not a politician. Do not attach too much with a cause. And also see a person of stature of Bhushan should not be making such a reckless tweet. People take it seriously."
"People will stop coming to court if you destroy and finish the institution like this," said Justice Mishra. He further said, "It's so painful to say all this just before I'm to demit office, said the judge who is retiring on September 2."
Justice Mishra added, "It is about the system. If we are going to destroy each other, who will have faith in this institution? You have to be tolerant, see what the court is doing and why. Don't just attack. Judges can't go to press to defend themselves or explain."
He continued by saying, "Whatever we have to say, we have to write in our judgments. There are so many things but do we have to go to the press? I will never do that. That's the ethics for judges. If we are going to fight each other, pull each other down, we will finish this institution. If Bar and Bench are going to destroy each other, who will have faith in this institution? Don't just attack. Judges cannot go to Press to defend themselves. You (lawyers) are our voice."
Earlier,  Bhushan refused to apologise and told the SC that his tweets were "constructive criticism".
SC had concluded that Bhushan in his tweets against Chief Justice S A Bobde and last four CJIs based on distorted facts made a "scurrilous and malafide" attack on the institution of SC which destabilized the foundation of the judiciary.
Bhushan, in the statement submitted to the court, said any unconstitutional apology at this stage would amount to "contempt of his conscience" as they were based on his "bonafide belief". He urged that the tweets should only be seen as, "constructive criticism so that the court can arrest any drift away from its long-standing role as a guardian of the Constitution and custodian of peoples’ rights."
Referring to a photo dated June 29 of CJI Bobde sitting on a Hardley Davidson bike, Prashant Bhushan had tweeted, “CJI rides a 50 Lakh motorcycle belonging to a BJP leader at Raj Bhavan Nagpur, without a mask or helmet, at a time when he keeps the SC in Lockdown mode denying citizens their fundamental right to access justice."
The second tweet dated June 27 said, "When historians in the future look back at the last six years to see how democracy has been destroyed in India even without a formal emergency they will particularly mark the role of the Supreme court in this destruction and more particularly the role of the last 4 CJIs.
6. Final Verdict:
In his statement filed in response to the August 14 verdict holding him guilty of contempt, Bhushan paraphrased the words of Mahatma Gandhi, saying,
"I do not ask for mercy. I do not appeal to magnanimity. I am here, therefore, to cheerfully submit to any penalty that can lawfully be inflicted upon me for what the Court has determined to be an offence, and what appears to me to be the highest duty of a citizen."Prashant Bhushan statement
Learned Legal Luminary’s above statement has enlightened me go through the Foreword of Mahatma Gandhi’s Autobiography, “My Experiments With Truth” & I quote :
“This truth is not only truthfulness in word, but truthfulness in thought also, and not only the relative truth of our conception, but the Absolute Truth, the Eternal Principle, that is God. There are innumerable definitions of God, because His manifestations are innumerable. They overwhelm me with wonder and awe and for a moment stun me. But I worship God as Truth only. I have not yet found Him, but I am seeking after Him. I am prepared erto sacrifice the things dearest to me in pursuit of this quest. Even if the sacrifice demanded be my very life, I hope I may be prepared to give it. But as long as I have not realized this Absolute Truth, so long must I hold by the relative truth as I have conceived it. That relative truth must, meanwhile, be my beacon, my shield and buckler. Though this path is straight and narrow and sharp as the razor’s edge, for me it has been the quickest and easiest. Even my Himalayan blunders have seemed trifling to me because I have kept strictly to this path. For the path has saved me from coming to grief, and I have gone forward according to my light. Often in my progress I have had faint glimpses of the Absolute Truth, God, and daily the conviction is growing upon me that He alone is real and all else is unreal. Let those, who wish, realize how the conviction has grown upon me; let them share my experiments and share also my conviction if they can. The further conviction has been growing upon me that whatever is possible for me is possible even for a child, and I have sound reasons for saying so. The instruments for the quest of truth are as simple as they are difficult. They may appear quite impossible to an arrogant person, and quite impossible to an innocent child. The seeker after truth should be humbler than the dust. The world crushes the dust under its feet, but the seeker after truth should so humble himself that even the dust could crush him. Only then, and not till then, will he have a glimpse of truth. “
Accepting the essence of Truth absolutely as prescribed above by Father Of the Nation , this Court Retracts Its Judgement dated 14/08/2020 that pronounced him guilty.
The learned lawyer, Mr. Prashant Bhushan is a free bird to #CHIRP henceforth as prescribed above in letters & spirit of Mahatma Gandhi .
This Case , now stands Closed .

Instagram for B2B Marketing: 10 Effective Tactics
Is your company still avoiding Instagram for B2B marketing? Perhaps your company Instagram page looks something like this:
Hopefully it’s not that bad. Hopefully, you’ve taken a few steps to build a presence on “the ‘gram.” But maybe it’s been more of just a foothold than a well-planned and executed strategy.
It’s time to change that.
The idea that Instagram isn’t for B2B marketers is almost as outdated as MySpace. And no excuses about how it’s for “the younger set” (whatever that means). Millennials run departments now. They make up a sizable chunk of the B2B buyer population.
But if your B2B company isn’t on Instagram already, you’re not as far behind the curve as you might think. According to a recent study, only 46% of B2B content marketers used Instagram in the last 12 months. Even more intriguing, only 17% of them advertised on the platform.
So it’s not like it’s too late. Sure, Instagram engagement rates aren’t as high as they used to be. And the platform just removed likes, which may have unexpected affects (or – who knows – positive effects). But please, don’t hang back because you feel your company missed the moment by not getting on Instagram early.
One more request: Please do not treat this platform like it was LinkedIn. Or even like it’s Facebook. We’ve all been told for years to craft content and strategy differently depending on which social media platform we want to be on. Instagram demands this.
So here are ten strategies for how to build your influence and audience on Instagram… and how to actually get some business from it.
1.) Authenticity rules.
Is there is a secret to success on Instagram that can be summed up in one word?
If there is, it may be authenticity.
Even B2B businesses let their hair down a little on Instagram. It’s a place for behind-the-scenes fun.
If this makes you nervous, consider this: Instagram is really about playing to your fanbase. If someone is checking your company out on Instagram, they’re looking to see you as a human organization.
As Tabitha Young of 30 Degrees North explains:  “Instagram can be a powerful tool if you are catering to your audience.”
“Speak to them on a personal level—not just a business level. Showcase other things that they would be interested in—not just what your business is selling. Your followers want to know that there is a human behind the brand.”
The way to do that is to be authentic.
If you’re not sure just what “be authentic” means, exactly, try this: Be playful.
2.) Use Stories.
I’ve been talking to quite a few social media managers lately, and the word on the street is engagement with photo posts is falling off.
“Everybody’s just going to the Stories,” one freelance social media manager told me.
It’s not too hard to figure out why: Video. We like moving pictures. Having sound adds another level to engage with, too.
Stories disappear after 24 hours, of course… unless you add them to your highlights (those round circles on your profile page, right above where your posts appear).
Dribbble has done a fantastic job with Stories by creating a series of super-short interviews with prominent designers.
Any B2B firm could do something like this. All you would need is for your interviewee to answer a couple of interesting questions (especially if they can result in inspiring quotes). Then have them send you a minute or so of Stories format (i.e. vertical) video. That footage could be taken while they’re on the phone, in a meeting, walking down the hall, or talking to colleagues. Stitch that together into a Story, then add each Story to a dedicated highlight.
3.) Embrace Instagram’s mobile-first DNA.
Most Millennials won’t have to be told this, but some GenXers and Boomers may benefit from the tip. Stop using Instagram via a browser. It’s meant to be used via the app.
Instagram is a truly “mobile first” channel. So if you’re still shifting your company towards thinking “mobile first,” Instagram can be one of the sub-strategies within that larger goal. You’ll want to complement it with a fast website (and prioritize that, by the way), but Instagram is a legitimate part of a move toward mobile. Just don’t think of it as all you have to do.
4.) Test the appointment booking feature.
This seems like a superb way for B2B marketers to get more traction from Instagram, but surprisingly few people talk about it. And it’s only available with a Business Account.
Here’s what a book button looks like in action:
There are over two dozen services you can use to add a book button. For B2B marketers, Acuity Scheduling would be a good choice. Plans range from free to $50 a month, and the $50 a month version lets you schedule appointments on up to 36 different calendars for multiple employees or locations. It also lets you accept payments for appointments, send texts, and is even legit for BAA and HIPAA compliance. It also integrates with Zapier, Google Analytics, InfusionSoft, Zoom, GoToMeeting, PayPal, and more than a dozen other services B2B marketers will recognize.
If you really want to actually drive business on Instagram, and you haven’t set something like this up, get on it. Like now.
5.) Do not get on Instagram just for the sake of being on Instagram.
This is B2B marketing… not a personal feed of photos of your kids, your travels, your food, or your cute puppy. You know that. You know you need to have a strategy and a well-defined goal if you want to make the time you’ll invest on Instagram worthwhile.
For B2B marketers, the best strategy may be to either:
Showcase your company culture and employees
Be a thought-leader with quotes and stats and useful information presented in a fresh way
The next questions is how you fulfill that strategy – which content will you publish?
Whatever it is, make it visual. Instagram is a visual content platform. While the text part of posts can be long, the real engine of Instagram is visual content.
So think in terms of visual content. For example:
Do you publish a lot of infographics? A full infographic won’t fit well on Instagram, but a section of one can. Ask your agency or your in-house designer to break out a few chunks of information from any new infographics you publish, or for all your old infographics. If you’ve got, say, 10 existing infographics, they could be made into 30-50 really nice Instagram posts. If you post three times a week, that’s 10-16 weeks worth of content!
If you follow the new research in your industry closely, all those charts and graphs can make for excellent photo posts.
Short video is also an excellent way to promote content. Tools like Lumen5 and InVideo make it possible to create very short summaries of blog posts and other content.
Bonus tip: If you don’t have 10,000 followers yet, and you want to try to get people to click through to your site to see this content, try updating your profile link so people can go direct to the piece of content you’re promoting.
Or use a tool like LinkTree to create a short list of links that appear when someone clicks your profile link.
6.) Keep the sales pitches to a minimum.
We won’t fool you: Instagram is probably not going to be a major direct sales channel for a B2B company. Not even a B2B SaaS company. And because you cannot force people to do what they don’t want to, trying to do the direct sales approach on Instagram may well fail.
So let’s step back from the direct sale approach. You’re probably familiar with the idea of using content marketing to educate and entertain rather than to use for direct selling. You know it’s okay to mention your products in passing in your content (maybe once or twice at most), but a hard sell will flop. And often, the less you mention your products and services in your content, the wider a reach your content is likely to have.
Instagram content is like this, but only more so. So while it is possible to sell via Instagram – and one in three consumers has done so – keep the Sales pitches to a minimum.
7.) Advertise.
Don’t have 10,000 followers? No worries. You can still drive clicks directly to your site, or to a specific landing page on your site. It just requires a little advertising.
You may have to spend a little and test a lot to maintain lead quality, but there is absolutely a business audience on Instagram. Just try to add a little fun to your ads, as your business audience may be enjoying some personal time as they scroll by.
8.) Engage with people directly.
I know… talking directly to your customers… it’s scary. But another tip I got recently from several social media managers is that if you want traction on this platform, you’re gonna have to go direct.
Fortunately, because Instagram is so mobile-first, this isn’t too hard. You’ve got your phone with you most of the time, right? So open that app and like and comment on, say, five posts while you wait for a subway, or in the checkout line at the grocery store. Do this twice a day and you’ll be leaving comments on 10 posts a day. Extra credit if you mention someone when you comment… it’s a great way to get people’s attention, and you’re engaging with two people at once.
Even better, when you publish a company post, tag a couple of accounts / people in the post.
Then go one better again: Ask your employees or teammates to reach out and do their own relationship-building on this platform. Younger employees, especially, may be much happier interacting with your audience on Instagram (rather than, say, LinkedIn). And it all counts. Whether you want direct sales, or simply engagement with your content, or to nurture partnerships, influencers, or future employees, the best way to do it is via human to human marketing.
9.) Be data-driven.
Just like with any other social media platform, or any other marketing activity: Track what you’re doing. Expand on what works and trim back on what doesn’t.
Instagram’s own analytics is pretty good, but 44% of marketers said it was only “somewhat” useful for strategic planning in a recent survey. Most B2B marketers may want to add another layer with tools like Oktopost or SproutSocial. Whatever you use, please – use something.
10.) Be open to influencer marketing.
Is there any other social media platform as dominated by influencers and influencer “culture” as Instagram? YouTube, maybe… but it’s a close tie.
Influencer marketing might not hold quite as much sway with B2B marketers as with B2C marketers, but there are opportunities. Especially if you can partner with subject experts and known authorities in your industry.
Ideally, of course, any partnership you do set up with an influencer will include more than just a few posts on Instagram. Webinars, research projects, and podcasts would all be complementary projects.
Instagram in 2020
As Instagram matures as a business platform, we expect to see more B2B marketers testing the platform or expanding on what they’ve already been doing. This will be especially true over the next few years, as younger Millennials move higher and higher up in the ranks of their companies, and gain more and more decision making power in B2B purchases.
But even now, don’t ignore this platform because it’s not chock-a-block with CMOs and VPs of marketing. B2B sales often involve the input of more than 10 people. Some of those people are on Instagram right now.

Inspiring Travel Quotes
Adventure is always worth it!
Travel isn’t always pretty…
1: “Adventure is worthwhile.” – Aesop
It doesn’t get more simplistic than Aesop’s take on traveling, the ancient Greek fabulist and storyteller. But that’s exactly why this classic travel quote continues to inspire me. Any adventure provides my mind and soul with an important boost that makes the rest of life seem even more worthwhile.
2: “Travel isn’t always pretty. It isn’t always comfortable. Sometimes it hurts, it even breaks your heart. But that’s okay. The journey changes you; it should change you. It leaves marks on your memory, on your consciousness, on your heart, and on your body. You take something with you. Hopefully, you leave something good behind.” – Anthony Bourdain
The late, great Anthony Bourdain really hit the nail on the head here. Many think of traveling as a way to relax, and it absolutely can be. However, I’ve always found that traveling is also the perfect way to break free from my daily mold by learning about the good and bad parts of myself and the world.
3: “Traveling – it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.” – Ibn Battuta
I’ve seen awe-inspiring things that I thought I’d never be able to explain to another person. Somehow, these experiences have shaped me into a much better storyteller, and I absolutely love sharing my adventures with others.
4: “We travel, some of us forever, to seek other places, other lives, other souls.” – Anais Nin
Anais Nin’s words about our constant search for other things that will make us feel whole feels increasingly fitting as each year passes. For me, it also sums up the desire to keep learning through experiences.
A journey is best measured in friends…
5: “A journey is best measured in friends, rather than miles.” – Tim Cahill
I couldn’t agree more! I’ve made many friends around the world, and it’s the time I’ve spent with them that has made my travels so fulfilling. People are always more memorable than checking off a bucket list.
6: “The gladdest moment in human life, methinks, is a departure into unknown lands.” – Sir Richard Burton
Sir Richard Burton eloquently captured the spirit of wandering off into the unknown. The moment of anticipation is often sweeter than the final result. Before I arrive in each new place, I often daydream about what is soon to come.
7: “No place is ever as bad as they tell you it’s going to be.” – Chuck Thompson
Have you ever looked at your hometown through the eyes of a tourist? I understand how easy it is to get jaded, but the truth is that every single place in the world has something of interest to show you.
8: “I am not the same, having seen the moon shine on the other side of the world.” – Mary Anne Radmacher
I often gaze at the stars when I’m visiting a new destination. It’s amazing to consider how they’re the same, yet so very different, from my home. Seeing these changes helps you begin to understand your place in the universe.
9: “Travel makes one modest. You see what a tiny place you occupy in the world.” – Gustave Flaubert
Flaubert continued Radmacher’s wise observation in this insightful quote. I definitely used to think that my life, and my country, played a bigger role in the world until I strapped on my backpack and began traveling.
Famous Travel Quotes
We travel so life does not escape us.
10: “We travel not to escape life, but for life not to escape us.” – Anonymous
I feel a heavy weight on my heart when I don’t travel for an extended amount of time. As soon as I set off for someplace new, the burden of stagnation falls away and I feel renewed. Traveling always restores my zest for life.
11: “The man who goes alone can start today; but he who travels with another must wait till that other is ready.” – Henry David Thoreau
I’ve heeded Henry David Thoreau’s advice on many occasions. In fact, of all the quotes about traveling I’ve collected here, this one has been the most influential. We can make excuses for not doing something, and in many cases, we blame others.
12: “To awaken alone in a strange town is one of the pleasantest sensations in the world.” – Freya Stark
A change of view always helps give me a new perspective on life. Traveling allows waking up to a different view on a regular basis. I know that I can always clear my mind by visiting new places. The perfect traveling quote.
13: “The life you have led doesn’t need to be the only life you have.” – Anna Quindlen
Anna Quindlen’s words have made a big difference in my life. It’s so easy to get stuck believing that what we’re doing right now is all we’ll ever do. It’s also way too easy to get sucked into identifying too strongly with the mistakes of our past.
14: “Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all of one’s lifetime.” – Mark Twain
I wish the entire world could understand Mark Twain’s insight into traveling. The only way to truly learn about the world and other people is by getting out there. We all have preconceived notions, but traveling has shown me that they’re usually false.

Man cannot discover new oceans unless he has courage…
15: “Man cannot discover new oceans unless he has the courage to lose sight of the shore.” – Andre Gide
I used to be so afraid to reach beyond my comfort zone. This travel quote about throwing off the so-called safety net of my comfortable surroundings let me discover parts of the world I’d long assumed I’d never see. More importantly, I’ve discovered things about myself that I never would have guessed.
16: “The use of traveling is to regulate imagination with reality, and instead of thinking of how things may be, see them as they are.” – Samuel Johnson
There’s so much wisdom in Samuel Johnson’s quote on travel. Take a second to visualize a place you’ve never been. If you make that your next vacation spot, I bet you’ll find out that it’s completely different from your internal image.
17: “The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page.” – Saint Augustine
We may feel safe in our little bubble, but it’s also boring. That’s the primary reason I started traveling several years ago, and I’ve fallen in love with the thrill of discovery. The world is a beautiful piece of literature that constantly surprises me. It doesn’t get any more real than this short travel quote.
18: “Travel and change of place impart new vigor to the mind.” – Seneca
When I travel, I’m able to give my mind something new and exciting to focus on. Studies say that we need to keep learning in order for our minds to thrive. Each time I travel, I learn hundreds of new things that I never would have encountered from the comfort of my living room.
19: “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do.” – Mark Twain
Mark Twain proved once again to be an extremely wise man with this travel quote about the power of regret. I cannot imagine reaching the end of my life with a huge bucket list of things that were never crossed off.
Anonymous Quotes On Traveling
Once a year, go someplace you’ve never been before.
20: “Once a year, go someplace you’ve never been before.” – Anonymous
This simple travel quote says it all. My mind craves new experiences, and I quite simply cannot get them from my hometown anymore. By going somewhere new at least once a year, I continue to grow in numerous ways.
21: “Travel is the only thing you buy that makes you richer.” – Anonymous
Money makes traveling a possibility, but it doesn’t enrich you like sharing experiences with new cultures. I’m not sure who coined this inspirational travel quote, but they hit the nail on the head!
22: “To travel is to discover that everyone is wrong about other countries.” – Aldous Huxley
In perhaps the timeliest travel quote of all, Huxley reminds us that countries themselves aren’t bad, nor are their residents. Governments can be corrupt, but the spirit of the people always lives on.
23: “Stuff your eyes with wonder, live as if you’d drop dead in ten seconds. See the world. It’s more fantastic than any dream made or paid for in factories.” – Ray Bradbury
Nothing can replace the thrill of travel for me. I’d rather see things in the real world than spend my time imagining them. None of the entertainment devices that humans have invented can come close to the joy I experience exploring the world.
24: “Traveling tends to magnify all human emotions.” — Peter Hoeg
I’ve been at my best, and at my absolute worst while traveling. Emotions are bigger during these trips because there’s so much new information to process. Peter’s travel quote reveals a truth that many travelers can relate to.

You don’t have to be rich to travel well.
25: “You don’t have to be rich to travel well.” – Eugene Fodor
Creator of the famous Fodor Guides Eugene Fodor’s quote helps highlight that people of almost any budget can travel. For example, a few years ago I hitchhiked across the United States for 5 weeks, and it was one of my best travel experiences.
26: “If you reject the food, ignore the customs, fear the religion and avoid the people, you might better stay at home.” – James Michener
I completely agree with Michener. There’s really no point in traveling to a new country if you’re only interested in staying inside the walls of a resort. I believe that the point of traveling is to learn about new cultures and customs and truly open our minds.
27: “People don’t take trips, trips take people.” – John Steinbeck
Going on a trip may start with a lot planning, but the truth is that once you arrive somewhere new, the area instantly begins to change you.  Traveling can truly be transformative if you allow the trip to take hold of you.
28: “When overseas you learn more about your own country, than you do the place you’re visiting.” – Clint Borgen
If you think your country does everything the right way and is revered by other nations, you’ll definitely have those notions put to the test when you enter another country. I’ve learned so much about the way my nation is viewed on the international stage. This is the perfect travel quote for Instagram or Pinterest.
29: “To my mind, the greatest reward and luxury of travel is to be able to experience everyday things as if for the first time, to be in a position in which almost nothing is so familiar it is taken for granted.” – Bill Bryson
Have you ever felt the rain on your skin in multiple countries? I have, and I’m here to tell you that it’s always a thrilling sensation each time it happens somewhere new. By traveling, I’ve learned to appreciate things that I would normally ignore.
Short Travel Quotes
Life is either a daring adventure or nothing.
30: “Life is either a daring adventure or nothing.” – Helen Keller
Just like everyone else, I spend some of my days sitting on a couch watching television. Of course, these aren’t the moments that define me, nor are they what I think of when wandering through my favorite memories. It’s the adventurous side of life that makes living truly worthwhile to me.
31: “Travel is never a matter of money, but of courage.” — Paulo Coelho
Yes, travel does require some money. However you’ll also need to gather enough courage to temporarily cast off everything about your daily life that makes it so comfortable — and boring.
32: “Stop worrying about the potholes in the road and enjoy the trip.” – Babs Hoffman
I used to obsess over every single little thing that could go wrong during a trip. This caused me to overly plan everything. In some cases, it even convinced me to skip places that were less predictable. Little things can go wrong anywhere, so they’re not worth worrying about.
33: “He who would travel happily must travel light.” – Antoine de St. Exupery
This became one of my travel mottoes after an unfortunate experience trying to schlep a massive backpack from the airport to a hotel via public transportation. I know exactly what ol’ Antoine was talking about in this travel quote!
34: “Every man can transform the world from one of monotony and drabness to one of excitement and adventure.” – Irving Wallace
If we’re being honest with ourselves, the routines of daily life are monotonous. For me, all it takes is a trip to a new city or country to reignite my sense of adventure. Each new discovery is exciting, whether it’s trying a new meal or seeing an ancient castle.

Not all those who wander are lost…
35: “Not all those who wander are lost.” – J.R.R. Tolkien
Tolkien’s wisdom really shines through in this quote. I have applied it to several of my trips by allowing myself to simply wander through a new land as opposed to plotting everything out first. You can’t understand how freeing this is until you try it.
36: “The more I traveled the more I realized that fear makes strangers of people who should be friends.” – Shirley MacLaine
This quote is as relevant today as it was when it was first uttered. People have an unfortunate tendency to claim others as their enemy without even getting to know them first. This is an issue that’s propagated by fear of the unknown, and it has led to a lot of lost opportunities throughout history.
37: “I travel a lot; I hate having my life disrupted by routine.” – Caskie Stinnett
Staying in one place for too long definitely makes my wanderlust start itching for a new adventure. Routine has its place, but too much of it makes me feel stagnant. I love shaking up my daily life by visiting a new place and immersing myself inside a different culture.
38: “A mind that is stretched by a new experience can never go back to its old dimensions.” – Oliver Wendell Holmes
Everything I’ve learned during my travels has forever expanded and changed my mind. This travel quote shows Holmes clearly grew in a similar way by visiting new lands.
39: “Remember that happiness is a way of travel – not a destination.” – Roy M. Goodman
Many chase the elusive dream of happiness when they should be embracing it inside of each little moment, as Roy alludes to in this inspiring quote. I learned long ago that happiness is found in the details.
More Fun Traveling Quotes
Life begins at the end of your comfort zone…
40: “Life begins at the end of your comfort zone.” – Neale Donald Walsch
What is your comfort zone? If I’d never learned to stretch mine, I’d still be sitting on the same couch after work every single day for the rest of my life. Instead, I challenged myself to tackle new challenges and to see areas of the world that had intimidated me.
41: “Once in a while it really hits people that they don’t have to experience the world in the way they have been told to.” – Alan Keightley
One of my favorite travel memories involves sitting on a sidewalk in Nicaragua eating some chicken & rice. I watched local people walk by for at least 30 minutes, going about their daily routines. This simple experience still defines Nicaragua for me in a way that visiting a famous tourist attraction never could.
42: “One’s destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things.” – Henry Miller
I frequently remind myself of this quote about traveling from Henry Miller. After all, simply checking off travel locations means nothing if you don’t allow each trip to change you in some way. I love to soak up a new culture and learn more about the locals’ point of view.
43: “I haven’t been everywhere, but it’s on my list.” – Susan Sontag
Every place on the planet has great potential to help us learn and grow. That’s the primary reason that there’s nowhere in the world I wouldn’t go if I had safe passage. Right now, there are some cities and countries that aren’t very welcoming, but I’d still love to see them someday.
44: “Nobody can discover the world for somebody else. Only when we discover it for ourselves does it become common ground and a common bond and we cease to be alone.” – Wendell Berry
You cannot possibly hope to learn the true nature of the world by doing nothing more than reading about it. As valuable as reading is, it always takes a backseat to discovering the world for yourself.

Take only memories, leave only footprints…
45: “Take only memories, leave only footprints.” – Chief Seattle
This is one of the classic travel quotes that everyone would be well-advised to remember. It breaks my heart to see historic areas filled with trash by careless travelers. We have a responsibility to preserve things as much as possible.
46: “Two roads diverged in a wood and I – I took the one less traveled by.” – Robert Frost
I took Frost’s words at face value in my teen years, but as an adult, I realize there’s much more to his sentiment. Seeing and doing the same things as everyone else can make it difficult to discover your own true identity.
47: “There is no moment of delight in any pilgrimage like the beginning of it.” – Charles Dudley Warner
The start of each new trip is an exciting time that’s characterized by a mixture of wonder and fear. You have no idea if the trip will go as planned, but the unknown is what makes everything so exciting.
48: “Oh the places you’ll go.” – Dr. Seuss
Dr. Seuss serves as a reminder that we can go anywhere if we stop putting restrictions on ourselves. The world is waiting; we just have to have the courage to answer the call. Doing this, again and again, has given my life meaning.
49: “It is not down in any map; true places never are.” – Herman Melville
Much like the hidden parts of our souls, we cannot hope to find something completely original and unspoiled without wandering off the map. I give myself the freedom to explore anything that catches my attention.
Investment in travel is an investment in yourself…
50: “Investment in travel is an investment in yourself.” – Matthew Karsten
Yup. I’m Matthew Karsten, and I totally just snuck in one of my own travel quotes. Haha! But I really mean this too. When I first quit my unfulfilling day job to go backpacking around the world, I didn’t know what I was doing, or where it would all take me. But traveling taught me a lot about life, as well as myself.
51: “For my part, I travel not to go anywhere, but to go. I travel for travel’s sake. The great affair is to move.” – Robert Louis Stevenson
Stevenson was much more than just a revered novelist; he was also a travel writer. This particular inspiring quote has always spoken to me. The urge to go somewhere new, no matter where it is, frequently grabs me.
52: “Our happiest moments as tourists always seem to come when we stumble upon one thing while in pursuit of something else.” — Lawrence Block
There is nothing more exciting than turning a corner while traveling and finding something riveting. I remember this happening when I stumbled onto a work of art by street artist Banksy. I don’t even remember my original destination, but I do remember the way I felt looking at Banksy’s art!
53: “Better to see something once than hear about it a thousand times.” – Asian Proverb
This is, by far, my favorite Asian proverb, and it’s truly one of the world’s most accurate travel quotes. I am always in awe when I find myself standing in front of an iconic landmark. Sometimes, they’re less impressive than the stories I’ve heard, but even that’s a worthwhile experience.
54: “Our battered suitcases were piled on the sidewalk again; we had longer ways to go. But no matter, the road is life.” – Jack Kerouac
Is there anyone more uniquely qualified to provide insightful quotes about traveling than the author of “On the Road?” Traveling doesn’t always go as smoothly as you’d expect. Despite this, I’ve discovered many times that the trip itself is every bit as exciting as the destination.
55: “Traveling is a brutality. It forces you to trust strangers and to lose sight of all that familiar comforts of home and friends. You are constantly off balance. Nothing is yours except the essential things — air, sleep, dreams, the sea, the sky. All things tending towards the eternal or what we imagine of it.” – Cesare Pavese
Pavese’s books often spoke about loneliness and the inability to connect to others in a meaningful way. Although his commentary on traveling does contain some truth, I’ve always taken it with a grain of salt. Yes, traveling can be brutal at times, but I believe it’s also one of the most freeing experiences a person can have.
56: “Your imagination is your preview of life’s coming attractions.” – Alber Einstein
57: “And then there is the most dangerous risk of all — the risk of spending your life not doing what you want on the bet you can buy yourself the freedom to do it later.” – Randy Komisar
Many people say inspiring things, but Komisar has lived them as a successful venture capitalist. I wasted a lot of time doing things that weren’t serving my higher calling because I fell into the trap of believing there would eventually be the perfect time to follow my dreams. Through traveling, I’ve learned the only perfect time is now.
58: “Life is short and the world is wide, the sooner you start exploring it, the better.” – Simon Raven
Controversial author Simon Raven said a lot of odd things in his time, but his travel quotes were typically spot on. This is a lesson I wish I’d heeded earlier in life. After all, the only way to see the entire world is to start taking travel-sized bites out it as early as possible.
59: “The journey not the arrival matters.” – T.S. Eliot
Eliot’s poetry inspired countless writers, but I’ve always been the most taken by this simplistic quote. When I first started traveling, I placed way too much focus on getting to my destination. By learning to let that go, I’ve developed some of my fondest travel memories on the road.
60: “What you’ve done becomes the judge of what you’re going to do — especially in other people’s minds. When you’re traveling, you are what you are right there and then. People don’t have your past to hold against you. No yesterdays on the road.” – William Least Heat Moon
Heat-Moon was so dedicated to writing unique travel books that he journeyed across the U.S. in a 1975 Econoline van. This is an adventure I long to duplicate. I also love the idea of getting a fresh start in every new town, and that’s exactly what happens if you’re willing to leave your past behind.
61: “To travel is to live.” – Hans Christian Andersen
I grew up reading Anderson’s fairy tales but didn’t know about his travel writing until adulthood. Now, I know that his many quotes about traveling truly captured the essence of why it’s so important to explore new areas. I feel myself growing stagnant when my feet touch the same ground for too long; through traveling, I’m able to learn and grow in exciting ways.
62: “To my mind, the greatest reward and luxury of travel is to be able to experience everyday things as if for the first time, to be in a position in which almost nothing is so familiar it is taken for granted.” – Bill Bryson
If you want to read humorous but insightful books about traveling, you should definitely check out Bill Bryson. He’s absolutely right about not taking things for granted when you’re on the road. Even something as simple as eating at a nationwide chain restaurant feels different when you do it in a new area.
63: “Travel makes a wise man better but a fool worse.” – Thomas Fuller
Fuller broke new ground with his literary skills, which allowed him to earn a living long before being an author was a viable full-time career for writers. Some say that everyone is changed for the better by traveling, but Fuller warned us that this wasn’t the case. I took his words to heart early on and always open myself to learning from the local experience.
64: “I have found out that there ain’t no surer way to find out whether you like people or hate them than to travel with them.” – Mark Twain
American treasure Mark Twain wasn’t one to mince words, but his humor made even the bitterest truths easier to swallow. Unfortunately, I found out the wisdom behind his words the hard way. I no longer go on long trips with people until we’ve tried a shorter excursion to test our compatibility as travel partners.
65: “The most beautiful in the world is, of course, the world itself.” – Wallace Stevens
Stevens had a love for the simple things in life, as evidenced by one of his titles: “The Emperor of Ice-Cream.” He’s also right; the entire world contains beauty. That’s why I long to travel to every country on earth.
66: “We live in a wonderful world that is full of beauty, charm, and adventure. There is no end to the adventures we can have if only we seek them with our eyes open.” – Jawaharial Nehru
It’s unsurprising that someone who learned directly from Gandhi would have such an inspiring way of looking at the world. Open your eyes to the beauty of a sunrise, a child’s smile and waves rolling into the shore. No matter how many times you’ve seen them, they’re still full of beauty and charm.
67: “I’m in love with cities I’ve never been to and people I’ve never met.” – John Green
John Green is a best-selling author, but according to Green, the true author of this quote is Melody Truong. Either way, the words resonate with me because they’re so full of truth. The feeling of loving unexplored parts of the world is exactly what pushes me to keep traveling.
68: “When preparing to travel, lay out all your clothes and all your money. Then take half the clothes and twice the money.” – Susan Heller
Heller’s widely quoted travel adage has influenced the way I travel. I used to pack way more than I needed, and this hindered my travels. Cutting my luggage in half has enhanced my trips, and it’s always wise to have extra money for emergencies.
69: “Live your life by a compass, not a clock.” – Stephen Covey
People have turned to Covey for business advice for years, but I’ve found the most value in this one simple quote. I used to meticulously plan each trip down to the minute. Letting go of the need to control everything has changed my travel adventures for the better.
70: “Travel far enough, you meet yourself.” – David Mitchell
David Mitchell’s best-selling novels typically involve traveling, as evidenced by this quote from “Cloud Atlas.” It’s difficult to get to know yourself when you’re stuck in the rut of normality. I always have the best self-awareness breakthroughs after a period of travel and inner reflection.
71: “I travel because it makes me realize how much I haven’t seen, how much I’m not going to see, and how much I still need to see.” – Carew Papritz
Being born in Yosemite National Park enabled the travel bug to bite Papritz at birth. His thought-provoking spin on the purpose of travel has greatly influenced me. I may never see it all, but that doesn’t mean I shouldn’t try.
72: “Wherever you go becomes a part of you somehow.” – Anita Desai
Indian novelist Anita Desai perfectly hits the nail on the head with her inspiring quote about traveling. We’re all shaped by each of our experiences. I love it that every new adventure helps shape me for the better.
73: “We travel for romance, we travel for architecture, and we travel to be lost.” – Ray Bradbury
Bradbury’s books often transport readers to another time or place. We cannot travel to other time periods in the real world, but we can take in the architecture of the past. Getting lost within these experiences is one of my favorite aspects of traveling.
74: “Happiness is letting go of what you think your life is supposed to look like and celebrate it for everything that it is.” – Mandy Hale
Author and blogger Mandy Hale embodies her viewpoint as the “single girl with a story to tell.” I try to remind myself of this quote whenever life seems to be spinning out of control. It has helped me stay calm during disastrous trips too.
75: “Wherever you go, go with all your heart!” – Confucius
Confucius was an early proponent of social equality who urged people to live a life of morality and sincerity. I’ve interpreted this quote to mean that it’s important to be fully committed to each new experience. By doing so, I believe we can gain new wisdom that would have otherwise eluded us.

14/3
Physically exhausting, mentally definitely not stable day to sum up but I am going to skip the good parts I felt happy and greater than most of the days today to be honest but now I am alone sitting in my bed, lights off lavender candle on, it’s 23.27 pm and I am drowning in my thoughts again.
I started thinking about what real love is a lot lately. And I am always coming up to the point that I decide, if you care about one’s happiness as much as yours and truly most of the time even more, that’s love. I love mom, dad well that’s obvious but that made me realize one more thing I love him. I mean I L O V E him. This is not the easiest words for someone like me as I am so arrogant and selfish most of the time but yes.
At the very beginning, there was this guy who I met exactly one year ago. Well, I of course knew him thanks to instagram but we actually talked that day-I do not exactly remember as I was drunk but that was what I told- So, the med day has also a different importance for me as I met my first -and I really hope to be the last- love. I totally remember waking up at 15th and he replied to one of the stupid stories I posted like ‘God why am I there’ I was like ‘Seriously what is he doing there’ and don’t remember my exact reply but I definitely didn’t think things were going to end up like this. I guess that’s the miracle of life lol.
About 2(?) months later, I -again- remember my exact feelings. I felt alone literally all the time, and seriously thought that I will never ever have real feelings for someone and I am always getting sick and tired and I will never settle on and have a nice life with the guy I love and be happy. Yeah those stuff were soooo far away from me and I always thought that I can spend my time now like that but I’ll never truly be happy. Anyway when I felt like that I always had the exact same routine. Binge eating, purging, crying to the bones of myself, facewash, cry again A LOT, calm down, listen to some Chopin optionally op9.2, and read Little Prince in French as I was taking the course. Oh my God little prince thank you for not only being the best book ever but somehow you made me meet him. I posted some French quotes. I remember it being about how you can not see the true love with eyes but only with heart. (So cute isn’t it?) And he wrote something and I was like ‘Wow so you know to speak French’ and the answer was typical him thinking about it now ‘well, nope’
The night you get to know each other, can not sleep because the conversation is going so well and you are having nice time thinking seriously how he is like that?. Yes, today marking almost 10 months inside the relationship, I truly can say that that was one of our best talks. You weren’t icecold as I though. Who can say that typical instagram dm flirting would make us come along all this path?
First date, you drinking black coffee, me thinking you’re hot. I was able to talk for hours without checking my phone.
2nd, starbucks, deciding seeing Avengers, me destroying my car fuck me.
Eymir, bike riding, me taking your photos, you talking about your life and getting scared of a fucking tiny water snail thing lol.
Beytepe, sitting on bare grass, I love how you made me listen your spotify playlists and we just sat there. first kiss, heartbeats super fast. We also made out for a couple of times in the car there i guess lol. I was always like ‘he is good at this’ but ‘nope we are not in a relationship nope’
ODTU, you going back to 34, not boyfriend yet, sitting on grass, thinking how cute you are.
Beytepe, stadium at night, listening to music, talking about religions and life and death and some serious stuff. I didn’t agree with you all the time but seriously that day I was amazed how you explained yourself. Lying on the grass on your knees, looking at the stars. (We did a LOT of sitting on the grass thing)
Beytepe, yeah again, playing volleyball, you sucking at it, you rolling some stupid round things, me thinking ‘Fuck, I am faling in love fuckfuckfuck’
Your house, us, for the first time. So much pain, definitely worth it, we belonging to each other. And confession: that day deep down I hoped that you’ll be the only person I do this with.
IKEA trip, your new house plant fantasy.
Your house, fighting, me crying and thinking if it is possible to hate and love someone that much at the fucking same time.
Library times together, fuck med school seriously I hate what it does to us.
Beytepe, having our first son but he is a frog and he definitely is not cute but at least he is with us. I was sad when I left him. one of the best memories. That day I thought how I love watching you laughing.
Phone calls, me opening up to you about my bulimia thing. That topic is kinda hard to talk so I am skipping it.
Meeting your mom, omg still can’t believe as it really is a big deal to me. I always wanted to ask if I was the 1st person for you doing this.
My house, making letter, penis and vagina cookies. Heaven in my mouth.
Coffee fest, I love watching you when you are doing something you actually like.
The time I got a fever, at your house, you doing weird stuff to me with towels. I love you and thank you for that I had shower like 4 times in 2 days.
TOBB, me getting iron supplement thing, I was SO mad at you those days and it took a long time to get over but I am feeling good now anyway you were with me and we took stupid selfies.
Late night Anıtkabir, all I can remember was how sick and cold I was urgh, skipping.
Us getting drunk together oMG that’s one of the funniest nights, you were SO stupid I have no idea how I drove and got back to home that day omg and we had some great drunk sex lol.
-I’m skipping loads of school and your (tbh I’d prefer calling it our) home memories bc they are sooooo much-
Christmas shopping, wearing Santa hat and stupid but cosy sweaters, me thinking how excited I am to be with you on a new year.
You coming to pick me for a coffee at 1st Jan, AND YOU RAN AWAY WHEN YOU SEE DOGS. That’s enough for that day.
oOOOH, ice skating and you sucking at it.
And, bowling and you TRULY sucking at it.
God I can’t continue this because I seriously am crying as I am so extra emotional from the doctor stress and we not being able to talk and hug and spend time a lot lately. I don’t know if I am not strong enough to survive depressions but I do know that I hate being alone. By being alone, I don’t mean other temporary people. I mean being without you. (You can not believe the amount of tears coming out of my eyes right now.)
But the fact is even when we can’t see each other a lot, or talk, deep down I am always aware of you loving me-me loving you. We had to go through hard times with fighting all the time with all the crying and screaming and I cannot guarantee that that will never happen again. But I can say that I will be loving you so much when we fight. I care about you, I do not want to let go, I want to have all those amazing feelings that I wrote about all my life. I don’t want some ‘Yeah I’m getting bored and life will change for both of us so let’s split up’ kind of relationship. That’s it. Not the perfect version because of the life conditions but I am living a dream with you. I am not sure if you can see the amount of hard work I put in us and maybe I am not seeing what you all did for us.
I just am sure that I love you. That scares me some days because I feel it to my bones sometimes. Sometimes a thing you do breaks my heart so much I cry for hours. Or when I can’t focus on what I do when we argue. Those stuff really scare me. I am scared of the things I would do not to lose you. Having feelings is bad those times.
But most of the times, you, not doing anything, just existing at the same location with me makes me smile. You hugging me makes me smile. You saying that you love me makes me happiest person alive. The dreams of future including you excites me so much. I just can not wait to spend more time with you. Happy meeting anniversary if this is a thing.
-yeah so I am saying it without doubts-

Every Wednesday I share a review of a book. The book is chosen for me weekly and I cannot refuse the book, I have to read it and I have to review it. And I love doing it. A couple of weeks ago I was handed Marie Kondo’s ‘The Life Changing Magic of Tidying’. Considering it is, in its own way, a self-help book, it was an interesting one to review. Where normally I’d discuss themes, characters, writing styles and my personal feelings towards a book, this time I was a little stuck as there was nothing I was given to observe, analyse or discuss besides Marie Kondo’s actual method of tidying, so why not? I reviewed the book and the review can be found here, this post is my experience with the KonMari Method.
Prior to reading her book, I checked out goodreads to see what others had been saying about the book and I found some of the reviews hilarious – I too was slightly disturbed at the thoughts of my socks having self-esteem issues because I ball them up! As I began reading her book I felt a sense of anger towards Marie Kondo – her writing style was so persuasive. She was convinced her method was a gift from above and her confidence and assurance really bothered me initially, there’s something about self-assured people which just really gets to me. (I’m not jealous..)
Anyhoo, I began to find myself nodding in agreement to the parts where she discussed the different types of hoarders and how, even though you could spend an entire day cleaning and rearranging, the room/house will still end up messy within a week – for as long as I can remember I would spend hours or days working hard on perfecting my bedroom. Growing up we moved quite a bit, so I’ve tried perfecting at least 6 bedrooms of different shapes and sizes, but within a week my floor would be buried under a pile of clothing, shoes and books. Whether it was a box room (like the one I’m in now) or the huge one with the 7 wardrobes (I miss that room), I always found a way to make my bedroom look like the aftermath of a tornado.
Under my bed, before the gutting began.
Before beginning the transformation, Kondo recommends you imagine your ideal lifestyle (there’s a higher chance you’ll rebound if you don’t, apparently), once you’ve visualised that ask yourself why you want to live that kind of lifestyle and when you figure that one out ask yourself why a couple of more times.. “Before you start tidying, look at the lifestyle you aspire to and ask yourself: ‘Why do I want to tidy?’” So that’s exactly what I did. What kind of lifestyle did I want? A positive, relaxing and feminine one. Why? I want to meditate in a peaceful surrounding, somewhere I can light candles and read a book or listen to music and draw, somewhere I can blog and study and research, somewhere I can access my clothes/make up/jewellery without searching through bags and baskets and boxes. Why? To have my own space. Something just for me, a haven. Why? I’m independent and enjoy my own company, my mind tends to race
Clothes EVERYWHERE (never mind what was stowed away in the hot-press and attic)
quite a lot and as many of you who read this post will know, I can’t always control the ups and downs of my life, and really I need somewhere where I know I can wind down undisturbed, but also somewhere that can bring me joy – Then I looked around at the 3 metre x 3 metre room cluttered with everything from shoes older than my siblings to books older than my parents, as well as bags upon bags of clothes – with a decent amount still unworn and with their tags.
Basically, the KonMari method summed up is this: If it doesn’t make you happy, throw it out. Treat everything as an individual. Feel your clothing, feel your books, and unless it “sparks joy” and you firmly believe it will be used again in the future, discard it. Don’t just dump it though, you must thank it for serving its purpose in your life. I thought I’d feel ridiculous as I did this, but I knew much of what I got rid of would be going to charity so I thanked my old possessions for serving their purpose in my life and wished them luck in fulfilling another purpose in someone else’s life. I’ve read some fairly harsh opinions regarding the method but when you think about it, it makes a lot of sense. Keep what makes you happy! By donating the rest you’re sure they will bring joy to someone else.
The KonMari Method begins with the visualisation, then categorising your belongings (sort by category, not location!). Belongings should be categorised and then sub-categorised if needed. The categories are as follows: Clothes, Books, Papers, Miscellaneous items and Sentimental items. Begin to clean by category, clothes first. My bedroom was littered with everything everywhere, I had clothes in bags, boxes, drawers, under my bed, stuffed under things and it was much the same for every other category, nothing really had its own designated area.
Things were left in the most random places.
I spent 4 hours powering through my all my belongings, putting any miscellaneous items I found in one bag to sort out later, same with any sentimental items, electricals, make up, etc. I was really surprised at how much I’d gotten despite the lack of music playing, which I would normally play loud enough for the neighbours to hear as I tidied my room but KonMari says no. Focus. By half 10 I was lightly banging my head against the wall as I sat under a pile of clothes, books and bags of rubbish, at 11:05 I managed to clear a path from my door to my bed – I wasn’t getting this done in one go.
I was working the day after I began to tidy, so I didn’t get the chance to continue it until half 6 that evening. Luckily, I got to start off with the papers which pretty much all went into the bag for rubbish. By this time, I had accumulated 2 large bags of bin-worthy rubbish and 3 bags of clothing donations. Next came the misc. items – Komono, as they are referred to – miscellaneous items are anything from CDs, DVDs, passports, stationary, to buttons, cables and make up. The exact range is as follows: This was the category I enjoyed the most, I had soooo many little knick knacks all over my room, some I kept out of guilt, some because I am a hoarder. A horrible, dirty hoarder. They all pretty much went bye-bye anyways. Sentimental items came next – this wasn’t so enjoyable. I won’t lie, a lot of the belongings I had in this category I kept. I can be quite a big softy at times and ended up spending over an hour just going through old photos, letters, notes and gifts and reminiscing. Swear I didn’t cry over how tiny my little brothers and little sister used to be! Though I kept most of what was in the ‘sentimental’ category, I organised them well in a photo album which I can now proudly display!
Finally, I got the chance to store my belongings (discard first, store later). I couldn’t get over how easily I found places for what I had left, now everything I own has its own home in my bedroom and, with exception from a few books, they’re all visible.
‘Appearance’ Area
My clothes, make up and jewellery are all stored within reach of each other – my ‘appearance’ area. My shoes are all together, my blog folders, iPad, laptop and printer are altogether at my desk – my ‘blog’ area.

My books are stored under my bed in two drawers, one for study books (psychology, Italian and self-help books) and one for my Spirit & Destiny magazines, stationary and some novels. Sentimental items are stored on my top shelf, a few more books I’d use more often on the second and candles and cutesy decorative things on the bottom shelf. That’s it – that’s my bedroom.
  Before & After
Before, I had clothes balled up on top of each other and about 5 items per hanger, I tried to designate drawers for sub-categories but I never stuck to them until now. Now I have one item of clothing per hanger, separate drawers for underwear, socks, pyjamas, tops and bottoms – and they all fit! Did you know you’re folding your clothes wrong? Yeah, Marie Kondo explains a really good theory as to why we stack them on top of each other when really, we should be stacking them beside each other vertically. It really is way easier to access them. Also, rid yourself of trackies. Loungewear is now considered taboo. Oh right.
Socks also have a specific way to be folded. Do you ball yours up? I did, I always have. Even when I had odd socks, I’d ball them all up together until I found their missing partner. Of course that’s the wrong way to do it though, to store your socks you should put them lying flat on top of each other and roll them from the top towards the toe, storing them upright to leave you with a little swirl (like a cinnamon bun!). Balling up your socks causes the elastic in them to stretch which is why sometimes they roll down. Kondo noted in her book how she longs to tell students she sees with their limpy socks how they should be storing them, so for everyone’s sake just roll them up instead of potato-balling them. By the way, was I the only person who stored my socks and undies together? ‘Cause now I have a separate drawer for my socks and tights and I feel really pretentious but I love it. Tell me I wasn’t the only one who stored them together.. and if there are people out there storing them together – stop. Trust me. Being able to say ‘my sock drawer’ makes you really cool.

It has been over a month now since I cleared out my room and I’m absolutely delighted to say it’s still just as clean as it was the day I completed it, vacuumed and all. The first thing my Mam noted about it was how bare it was – which is exactly how I wanted it, I just wasn’t fully aware of it. The brightness in my room now is unbelievable, it’s unfortunate positioning left it with a lack of natural lightning but with the light-coloured furniture and bare walls I can make the most of the daylight. Since I was a teenager I had a need to fill up my bedroom walls with posters, quotes, concert tickets, pictures of friends and family and so on, I carried this need with my in this bedroom, behind my bed are some of my favourite photographs hanging up pinterest style, and facing across from where I sleep in my bed was a wall filled with tickets, signs, and political declarations. I still have my photographs up but in time I could replace them with the kinds of pictures which belong on a vision board (therefore this will be my vision wall, always gotta get one up on everyone else..). My opposing wall is completely empty however, bar two decorative quote thingies my Step-Dad picked up for me when I wasn’t feeling the best. I think this wall was the biggest change in my room, it has a calm influence on my bedroom now.
In total, I filled 5 45-litre bags for donating to a local charity and 3 45-litre bags of rubbish. I won’t deny the touch of separation anxiety I felt in the days following the clear out, wondering if I’d been too strict with what I discarded or not but if I genuinely miss an item that much I’ll just go source another one. Thankfully there’s nothing I’m missing, and a couple of days ago I filled a plastic bag with some more donations of bits and bobs that I was unsure of whether I was ready to let go of yet or not.
      I wasn’t lying about the bags 🙂
A part of me still feels like it isn’t going to last, it is genuinely the perfect room for me and I’m fully in love with it, every time I use something I put it back where it belongs and I may or may not have taken to thanking my shoes after a day of wearing them..
Testimonies included in the book state how the tidying has improved people’s lives, I have felt a lot calmer recently and have been more productive with things that I pushed to the bottom of my to-do list – such as fixing up my poor car which has been sitting out the back untouched for over a year! Hopefully not much longer until she’ll be road-worthy again! (Would this be something you’d be interested in following along with? Let me know!) I made jokes in my review about  OCD, but I genuinely recommend this method to everyone. Most of her steps are listed on pinterest, if you just search “KonMari” you’ll find all you need. From my experience, if I had to describe the KonMari Method in one word, it would be ‘relief’. I have a brand new bedroom, the one I have always wanted with a unique space for blogging, a beautiful candle display across from my bed, a proper home for my shoes and a perfect blend of happy yet calming colours. Pity I’m planning on moving into my own place in the near-ish future, but at least then I can apply the method to my own home, having it on point from day one!
So I decided to apply the 'Kon Mari' method to my bedroom... Every Wednesday I share a review of a book. The book is chosen for me weekly and I cannot refuse the book, I have to read it and I have to review it.
