a/n: i am so sorry this took soooo long but i was procrastinating and i was mentally recuperating. blaming my studio project for this 😍 this is the final chapter of TWITTER SUCKS! it's also a little chaotic and honestly have a feeling i lost my writer's touch since i haven't wrote in a long time. however, thank you for joining me on this ride and sticking around till the end! I will be coming back with more writings and hopefully continuing with the series that I had before! of course, the new smau that will come out eventually ‘Collie Duty’ which I have no plans to release just yet😪 but it will be released maybe in the second half of 2023!

who knew after an incident that so happened to go viral. to the point where you were kidnapped and threatened to be sued by BELIFT, would actually get you to meet lee heeseung and be his girlfriend.

the past 7 months you could never have thought that. it had only been 7 months but it felt like a whole year when it happened. somehow it felt nostalgic looking back the tweets you had. it was hectic. complete 0.01% chance of this happening to anyone in the world. yet, somehow you were blessed to have gone through this.

you managed to steal heeseung’s heart. you made new friends but they’re actual idols (read: enhypen). you became famous. fought a company for a stupid reason which was that you were impersonating their idol. you even kicked a creepy staff out of BELIFT! which, you weren’t surprised. she’s a sasaeng at this point. maybe worse.

but oh my god, dating lee heeseung. it’s such a blessing-

“princess?” heeseung waves his hand in front of you. “are you having an inner monologue or something?” he snorts.

you rolled your eyes, “do you never have an inner monologue?”

“no? why would I?”

“lame. you ain’t in your main character era.”

“princess, I’m always the main character and you know it.” he smirks. you shoved him lightly.

“god, you’re starting to sound like sunghoon.”

“hmm, it’s as if I haven’t been living with him for the past 3 years.” he says with sarcasm.

“did you and sunoo have some sass off or something? why are you so sassy today?”

“sorry, I just don’t understand why some ENGENEs don’t appreciate the dancers’ hard work. I mean I get they’re girls but fucking hell, we’re just dancing to the choreo given to us.”

“well, do you want my honest opinion?”

“oh are you jealous too, princess?” he smirks a little.

“yeah, I am but i’m jealous of you. not the dancers. they’re hot. do you have their numbers by the w-”

“no. I don’t text the dancers so you can’t have their numbers.” he sulks.

“aww, is my little heeseung angy.” you cooed at heeseung. he huffs.

“angy isn’t even a word.”

“in my books it is and besides you’re so cute when you’re jealous.”

“I thought you’d be mad.”

“pfftt why would I be mad. I know it’s just a dance, you’ve practiced this for months. which makes it even better for the chemistry.”

“yeah but my part has you know…”

“what? her just literally trailing her hands on your arms? I mean it did get me jealous but at the end of the day, who are you kissing?” you smirked.

“you…” heeseung pouts.

“exactly.” you smiled. “i’m not worried about you cheating on me, heeseung. besides, I don’t think you could cheat on me because you love me too much.”

“you’re right.” heeseung grabs your hand and squeezes it. “I love you too much for that.”

“that’s my boy.” you proudly say.

meanwhile, on the other side of the wall.

“jayyyyy.” mae whines. jay smirks.

“what is this? my girlfriend is acting all whiny? it’s like you and (name) noona switched bodies.”

“urghh i’m sorry i’m having period cramps.” mae complains. jay’s eyes widened.

he gasps, “my queen is in pain? oh my god, let me go grab tons of period care things!” jay runs out of the room.

there was a scream across the hall.

“YAHHH NISHIMURA RIKI!!! DID YOU USE MY FACIAL WASH???” subin yells.

there were a couple of haste footsteps, which only meant…

“NOONA WAIT!” ni-ki yells out. let's all pray for ni-ki that he gets out alive safely.

"YAH YAH! break it up!" jungwon yells.

both you and heeseung could hear the commotion in the background but you could careless about what was going on because...

"it's you and me against this world, princess." heeseung purrs.

"are you trying to seduce with 'Bite Me' or something?" you deadpans.

"what? no-" heeseung sighs. "forget it. I was just being romantic."

you narrowed your eyes at heeseung, "anyways, i heard you guys are gonna start with world tours soon."

"ah, right. the 'fate' world tour. will you be watching it?"

"do you think i'm made of money? heeseung, i'm a broke college student."

"you have a job?"

"a mere cafe job. that's gonna take me months to save up. i could even barely afford to buy the ‘Dark Moon’ album.” you huffed.

“aww, princess. you have me, I could’ve gotten the albums for you for free and I could’ve thrown my photocards in there for extras.” he pinches your cheeks.

"now where is the fun in that? i like the surprise element of opening albums."

"and if you don't get any of my photocards?" heeseung folds his arms.

"then too bad. oh right, i saw jay looking sooo hot in that vampire photocard-"

heeseung shuts you up with a kiss. there were screams at the door and they were both from jake and sunghoon. you couldn't fully make out what they were saying. something about how mae and jay were busy being chummy, sunoo and subin pinching each others cheeks and then kissing each other.

you couldn't bother to focus on them. not when you have such a hot boy kissing you right on the lips. the same hot boy who was also your boyfriend.

and you couldn't ask for anything better than this.

you were happy.

FIRST IN A SERIES OF SUBSTACKS THAT CONTAIN EVERYTHING I’VE WRITTEN ON THE ATROCITIES PERPETRATED AGAINST ISRAEL (AND THE CIVILISED WORLD) BY HAMAS

INTRO

On October 7th 2023 the Palestinian Islamic Fundamentalist Terror Organisation HAMAS committed an atrocity in Israel. Their crimes against humanity included rape, torture and the murder of over 1400 people including babies. They live streamed their crimes to the internet in a move to designed to add degradation to the victims and to instill fear and terror in Jews and the civilised world.

Since this war on Jews and civilisation began I’ve been devoting huge amounts of time trying to provide simple, no-nonsense analysis that offers humour, Jewish pride and morally just aggression. The latter is important. You can be equipped with the best information in the world, but if you don’t have the courage to go out there and say it, what’s the point.

It also communicates our need to stop being defensive and playing into the hands of Hamas. Their tactic is to throw all manner of accusations at Israel so that so we’re constantly being prosecuted and having to justify ourselves. We are not on trial. They are the guilty ones. They committed this atrocity. There needs to be less explaining and more attacking. Go on the offensive. Every time they pull us into rebuffing some absurd lie they are distracting the world from what they did to Jewish men, women and children and why people are now suffering in a legitimate war of self-defence. Keep the spotlight on them always. They are Islamic fundamentalist, muslim supremacists - racist terrorists who kill babies and non-Muslims. They are sadists and torturers. They are killers of gays and rapists of women. An ISIS style gang of criminals. Britain and America gave no ceasefire for the Nazis and there can be no ceasefire for Hamas - villains who have picked up the torch of Nazism. There is no prospect for peace for anyone in the Middle East until the world eradicates them. This is the only thing that can create conditions for some kind of future to be discussed.

As this content has proven popular, I am collating it here in a series of articles titled LEE KERN ON HAMAS. The articles will be numbered. This is the first.

These are resources for everyone. The vocabulary, language and ideas are yours to use. Feel free to screengrab and share the tweets if that’s easiest. Share this resource to your friends, family, followers, the uninformed, the hostile - anyone you think needs to see it.

NOT the one direction take that is SO correct. I am desperate to know what the opinions of all of the gaang are on 1d - the only personal headcanon I have on that is that Sokka gets really really mad whenever Katara tells him that one direction are as influential as the beatles. also I think Ty Lee might be a larry

ok full disclaimer i was firmly a 1D hater in their heyday and i still hate everything about them except for that tweet that's like "niall should petrol bomb you." i love that tweet.

aang doesn't seek out their music or anything about them but has a lot of secondhand information on zayn via katara and has listened to some of their music (once again, via katara) but he personally thinks that niall seems like the best one and this makes katara super angry.

katara loves zayn and thinks the other ones are interchangeable, except for harry styles, who she hates specifically because she thinks he's taking attention from away from zayn. she'll grumble about how the only people who like harry styles anyway are white girls and fags and sokka's just like "....as opposed to people who enjoy...... the other members of this terrible manufactured boyband?" and she screams at him about how he doesn't understand ANYTHING, at which point he immediately leaves the room. she probably also has really strong opinions on which of their albums / songs are the best, but i don't know any of their songs except for the one that's like na nana na so idk.

sokka would be fully neutral on 1D if not for katara. because of her he hates them, but he does also think that zayn is hot and harry styles sucks (he's making gnc bi guys look bad) so at least they can agree on that. also he loves that tweet that's like "niall should petrol bomb you" katara showed it to him because it made her crack up and ever since they say it to each other constantly.

toph loves telling katara that she thinks zayn is ugly just to see how long it will take once katara starts going off about how "shes such a stupid dyke she'll never understand his beauty" for her to be like. "oh....... right. well fuck you anyway toph."

zuko gets into a really big fight with katara over whether or not harry styles is "actually gay". zukos like "sure he can wear an ugly little outfit but has he ever sucked a dick" and kataras like "well he could be a gay virgin. you of all people should know what that's like." and they get into a screaming match that ends in tears. and the whole time it was over the most pointless subject ever because there is no good answer and both of them dislike him.

suki only listens to women singing. her ears are literally unable to register male vocals. all the boys in that band look like blobs to her. katara knows better than to broach the subject with her. suki lives in carefully-curated ignorance of any and all boybands. she is free.

azula's go-to response any time she hears anyone talking about them is to just say "i hope they die in a fire." she's absolutely furious, though, when she says that in sokka's vicinity and he has the audacity to laugh. he's not allowed to agree with her!!!!

ty lee doesn't actually like them but she knows how much it annoys azula so sometimes she'll pretend to like them and then act like she couldn't hear azula when she said her de facto line until azula is screaming "I SAID. I HOPE THEY DIE IN A FIRE!!!! I KNOW YOU CAN HEAR ME TY LEE!!!!!!!!" at which point ty lee calmly looks up at her from where azula's standing on the table like "yeah girl. we all heard you the first time."

when mai is hanging out with both azula and ty lee she'll take ty lee's side by doing the bit with her, but when she's alone with either one of them or with anyone else she's just like "i hope they get compressed in an industrial molding machine." "i hope they all drown in a really big puddle." "i hope they disappear in the bermuda triangle." "i hope they all fall over at the same time and hit their heads on one another's heads." "i hope they get petrol bombed." etc.

"He's such a fucking brat, I swear to God."

"I am not going to deal with his attitude anymore, I need to protect whatever sanity I have left!"

Seungcheol rubs his temples in annoyance as he listens to the complaints of his subordinates, anger bubbling dangerously in his chest.

"Do any of you realize that this is the goddamn son of the corporate head of Lee enterprises?" The leader grits his teeth, "If we get him to speak, it's game over for these fuckers."

"Boss, he's insufferable!" Mingyu protests, "There's no fucking way he'll speak!"

"I second that." Vernon supports the previous statement.

"Let me try, then."

The three men turn their attention to the only person who remained silent this whole time - Wonwoo.

"What makes you think you can get him to talk?" Mingyu raises a questioning eyebrow.

"I have my ways," Wonwoo puffs out a cloud of smoke, tapping the cigarette with his pointer finger.

"Go ahead then," Seungcheol speaks and Wonwoo walks towards the other room.

"Jeon."

"What now?"

"The gun. Leave it here."

"....Fine." Wonwoo sighs and takes out his weapon from behind his back, putting it on the small table.

"You better not get too rough with him, bro." Vernon warns.

"No promises."

"Oh my God, y'all are so fucking funny!" Chan wheezes from his chair, his pearly whites flashing under the dingy lamp.

Wonwoo takes a drag from his cigarette, silently watching the young man laughing his heart out and making fun of his fellow gangsters.

"Like, the other two were so quick to run with their tails between their legs, soooo easy to annoy them!"

Wonwoo takes another drag from the cigarette.

"You're way too silent though, sitting there all cool and scary looking with your cig," the younger man cranes his neck, hands fiddling with the ties around his wrists.

Wonwoo throws his cigarette on the ground, snuffing it out under his boot and he gets up from the chair, walking towards the captive.

"Oh so you actually can react- Whoa!" Chan yells when Wonwoo flattens the sole of his boot on his chest, kicking him down on the ground with a loud thud.

"What the fu-"

"You had your fun, pretty boy," Wonwoo licks his bottom lip, "Now you better start talking about your daddy's dirty dealings - before you get into more trouble."

"Ooh, so tough and scary," Chan chuckles, but it's short-lived, as he feels a sharp sting on the back of his head.

"You don't want to mess with my temper, kid." Wonwoo glares at the rich kid, one hand deeply rooted into his blue hair, the other fisting his silk necktie.

"That just makes me wanna mess around with you, big guy."

The older man pulls the tie harder than before and slots his thigh between Chan's legs, completely overpowering him.

"Oh, you're really tough and scary!"

"You're so fucking lucky I didn't bring my gun with me, boy." Wonwoo growls, voice dropping several octaves, "Otherwise things would have gotten really tough and scary."

The last sentence sends a chill down Chan's spine and straight between his legs. No one has ever treated him so...lowly.

And it turns him on beyond comprehension.

"That...was so fucking hot," Chan admits with a loud exhale, feeling his dress pants tighten around his crotch, "What's your name, hot guy?"

"Does it matter?"

"It matters to me!"

"Wonwoo."

"H-Huh?"

"My fucking name, you idiot," Wonwoo clicks his tongue in annoyance.

"Mmm, hot name for a hot guy like you." Chan flashes a sultry grin.

"Stop fucking around, kid." The gangster grips the collar of the boy's shirt, accidentally ripping the top two buttons open.

"Take it easy now, will ya?"

"I'm not your fucking daddy, you rich little bitchboy," Wonwoo grips Chan's jaw, "So start talking before I bruise up your pretty face."

"No need for that, Wonwoo."

"Oh?"

"I'll just spit up everything I know!"

"What's with the sudden change of heart?"

"Just hoping to strike a good deal with you."

"Do you really think you're in a place to strike deals?"

"For the info I can provide? Definitely."

Wonwoo stops for a few seconds and he pulls Chan back up, the chair he's tied to back in its previous stance.

"Start speaking up."

"I didn't even say my terms!"

"Have you even thought of any?"

"Well...." Chan licks his lips seductively.

"I can definitely think of a few things."

The Phantom of the Opera | 조승우 Jo Seung-woo

Final boss of ticketing, Jo Seung-woo! The last one I snatched out of the four in one single ticketing after an hour of suffering. He's a pretty big actor who sells out shows quickly and has also been in dramas and movies. By the time you make it into one of his schedules' seating charts, the seats are all grayed out. So I had to keep refreshing and playing fucking whack-a-mole with the single color specks for any released seats that would pop up. One time I even even made it all the way to confirming payment and it said someone else took it. I actually thought I was about to turn into the Joker. But I am stronger! I won! And after seeing his performance in person? It was worth the fight.

I'll start this off with this tweet:

Shoutout to the guy next to me that was in shambles crying through his binoculars I hope he lived. Admittedly I did get teary-eyed myself! Which is quite an accomplishment even if it wasn't full blown tears like when seeing Ju-taek because I thought I was immune to this show after so long! But this is like uber sad pathetic wet cat man. My seat was actually a great unobstructed view with lots of space in the aisle. The Charlotte is so small that absolutely any view here is a good one especially if you have a pair of opera glasses/binoculars. Also I was safe from the piercing screams of the ballet girls! Hurray!

Hannibal Rehearsal

I really thought "I'll only use my binoculars for the major scenes with the trio because it's too tiring to hold them up", but that was a lie because I loved observing the supporting cast and ensemble too much. This time I watched for the smaller details like Christine quietly singing along to herself on the side while Carlotta was singing 'Think of Me'. Both Christines do it, but I remembered to look for it this show :') Kim Ah-seon had been clearly still recovering from being sick the previous performances, but I think she finally had her strength again this show. I love how elegant and dignified she is and her strong line delivery

The Mirror

Hearing Raoul's voice made the Phantom shoot a dark glare towards the dressing room door. Then, with the slightest smirk, he invited Christine into the mirror. Is somebody proud they managed to swipe the girl from the pretty young rich boy tonight? Ha

First Lair | POTO / MOTN / STYDI

Even if he's like...the most sad sewer creature-y of the Phantoms he's still got his charm okay! His voice isn't very strong, but I think he was able to handle it well enough during my show. He sounds older than he is actually is to me. How do I elaborate without making it sound backhanded? Even though he struggles in some areas with his singing, I think his vocal color is still suited for the energy his Phantom has. I'm just going to have to hope you understand me 😭 Whatever he lacks in that department, he certainly makes up for it in acting. It seems like he never stops onstage, like he's always making so many little choices at every moment. So it was a bit hard to keep track of everything he did because he was constantly doing something and was really immersed. I liked the sort of dreamy delivery of the beginning lines like the whispered way he sings "어둠...속에 - in the darkness". Halfway through the song he seems to build a little more enthusiasm seeing how open she is to him. He used more soft hand movements to act out certain parts of the lyrics like both his ear and then his body when he sang 들어, 느껴 - hear it, feel it". It's like really wanted to paint a clear picture of his mysterious beautiful dark world of music for Christine. I liked when he did a gesture with his hands like energy bursting free when he sang his big note in “네 영혼 다시 태어날 순간 / The moment your soul will be reborn” (let your soul take you where you long to be). This version of the line is unique to his Phantom. He smiled a lot and although he had a bit of a slight odd nervous energy, he still managed to maintain eye contact with her most of the time. Once he finally held her, he rested his head on her shoulder and whispered his words into her ear. 👀 He looked really worried and tried to catch her when she fell. After putting the cloak on her, I think he went to touch her, but stopped himself feeling a bit nervous. He put his hand on his chest instead to finish his final note

"Fake it til you make it" was working so well until it wasn't. Whatever confidence he built up during MOTN...bye. He's a little scary at the end when he shrieks out the 'Curse you!' and an extra 'No!' But most of all he's just really sad. When he asked her "what did you hope to see?" while chasing her, his voice sounded hurt and there was fear in his eyes. Like why, why did you have to be curious when I actually had it under control somehow? He slid slowly to the ground in defeat halfway through the song when he began the crawl. He eventually stopped making an effort to cover his face on his way toward her. Maybe he was so destroyed he didn't have the energy to. I liked how natural his acting felt here. It was tragic without being over the top. But I felt this about a lot of his choices in general

Why So Silent? / Notes II

Taking focus away from the main roles for a moment, André is sooo extra stressed by this point. He fumbled the score when the Phantom tossed it to him. He does this every show, but this time I only just noticed him quickly doing sign of the cross during Notes II when they were opening up letters. He got super jumpy Also, Firmin and André start laughing to each other and making silly gestures making fun of Piangi when the Phantom starts attacking him in his note, but as soon as he addresses them, oh it suddenly really wasn't funny anymore!

The Point of No Return

Somebody help this man he already got jumpy simply just hearing her start to sing. 🤭 JSW Phantom seemed like the weakest one here across from Christine. He’s writhing terribly and gripping himself He was startled the most when she was close behind and he began to tremble. But when Christine finally touches him he moaned a little. It wasn't very loud, but it definitely was there and he threw his head back. His hands reached up to his face as he looked up before he finally held hers. This proposal was a mess. He got down on one knee at one point, but then he got too freaked out and shot right back up again as if he realized it was too vulnerable of a position to be in. When he was unmasked, he didn't scream and it was actually really heartbreaking to me. Like I do love a good scream, but ouch. His face dropped and he froze in complete shock looking like he'd been stabbed in the heart. His eyes darted around for a moment seeing everyone watching him like a trapped animal. It took him a moment to snap out of his daze and run off with her.

Down Once More / Final Lair

After throwing Christine, he almost looked regretful like he realized he was too hard, but then tried to push forward. Because he was fueled by anger, he didn't hide his face away as much like usual. It was still clear he was very actively disgusted by it. He touched his face for a moment after he let go of her and then immediately wiped his hand on his thigh. This performance he was actually able to look into her eyes when giving her the bouquet instead of looking down in shame. When he picked up the mirror bride to toss her he sang his lines into her ear in a whisper and actually very gently just plopped her on the ground instead of throwing her. I love this weird little detail I won't lie...it was kinda cute and silly that he had to hop a little to reach Won-geun's neck with the lasso haha. It's not supposed to be cute but I find it cute okay. He covered his ears while crying when she was coming over to him before the kiss :( After the first kiss it looked like he put his face in her shoulder for a moment, but still didn't have his hands on her. He seemed to give in a little for a second, but then took her hand off his head, looked at it for a moment, and gently wiped it with his sleeve like he couldn't let her have his filth taint her... When he approached Raoul with the candle, he could almost barely be heard whispering "Raoul de Chagny..." slowly in a chilling way before releasing him and turning away. I think he harbors the most bitterness towards Raoul out of the Phantoms. He's the most insecure one, and Raoul is everything he'll never be. He fell and pressed his head into the ground roughly while shaking when he screamed for them to leave him. And his scream was so painful and raw I don't know how he lets that out. He stayed like this for a while before he crawled clumsily and quickly towards the monkey in desperate need of any kind of comfort. He put his forehead head against it, closed his eyes tightly and held it so closely while he sang Masquerade. Christine came back and he tried to fix his hair and clothes before going to her I think SJS Christine was a good match for his interpretation of the Phantom because of how unconditionally compassionate she is. He was very fragile and she's very caring and gentle. I think she really did view JSW Phantom as her guardian and guide and had a very pure deep kind of love for him. Maybe not romantic love, but it was very strong either way. She watched him closely in the boat as she left, but he was facing the other way gripping her veil, repeating her name over and over. He turned at the last moment and called out "Christine Daaé!" one more time to her running over to take in the sight of her one last time. His final lines are actually different from the other Phantoms. It only just hit me the other day that they're the same as the lines from the original production in 2001-2. No idea why it took me that long to make the connection, but I found it interesting enough to note!

I really want to do musical promo time, but I really don't think what's on youtube does him justice. So let me just say his 2019 Jekyll/Hyde + Sweeney Todd and his Hedwig? Incredible. There's a reason for that ticket selling power he has and I say that completely unbiased!

Also lol at the person in front of me on the plane to Seoul that was watching his movie 'The Classic' because I was like "oh hey it's you I'm seeing you in a few days"

ok so...what if heeseung was able to get into yale/suddenly get so much money because it's heeseung/someone he knows or is related to who does admission fraud. the contact name of the person who was doing the admission fraud is LEE and as far as i'm as i'm aware no one else in the smau is a lee. Hello. I hope my message doesn't come off as mean or judgemental. I wanna talk about the OP/OPLA fandom.

I fully agree with the criticism of Taz Skyler, but 98% of the OP fandom worships Oda like a God when he's friends with 2 mangakas who are child predators (the Kenshin and Toriko creators)... I love OP as much as any other fan (I don't give it my money though), but I wish fans didn't feel the need to kiss the creator's ass so much, or make excuses for him using his clout and money to promote his predatory friends.

People in the fandom saying that Taz or the potential casting of Jamie Lee Curtis as Kureha will "taint" OP when the creator already did that feels like people don't take CSA as seriously as they should. Almost anyone who brings up Oda's terrible taste in friends gets shut down with poor excuses or treated like a "hater".

OP is also a story full of fatphobia and misogyny, where Oda makes it clear that the only women worthy of being seen as attractive and worthy of devotion need to be thin and have big breasts. People fight me on this one all the time, but the treatment of fat female characters like Alvida and Shinobu proves I'm right.

Again, I love OP... but it's been flawed before Taz Skylar tweeted anything.

hello! it's not mean at all & i agree 100%! oda is incredibly flawed & there's a lot to criticize about the original manga. i've actually spoken about oda's misogyny in my own personal blog before.

this is why i'm not acting like still enjoying opla is a sin (or one piece in general), even tho the cast may be problematic. if i did, i would stop running this blog at all. i am merely withdrawing my personal support from the cast for the sake of my sanity to be frankly honest.

i'm glad you brought up these issues & sent this message, so thank you! honestly part of the reason i'm excited for the live action is to see them hopefully rectify some of the major issues with the animanga, like the horrendous fatphobia, certain characters' (like sanji) misogyny & queerphobia, etc.

i agree that judging opla & its cast, while pretending that oda & the original content does not have plenty of issues is indeed incredibly hypocritical. i'm also not a fan of ppl using the genocide in palestine to speak ill of opla in general bc they never liked it to begin with. it's honestly disgusting & disrespectful.

i think the bottom line is that it is important to be aware & critical of what we enjoy & the ppl involved in it.

Angela Bassett Doesn’t Owe The Oscars A Thing — Not Even A Smile

My expectations for this year’s Oscar Awards were low. After another long awards season of Hollywood doing what it does best — ignoring Black art — I wasn’t particularly looking forward to the show besides judging the celebrity fashions on the red carpet, watching Rihanna perform live (Twice in one month? What a time to be alive!), and getting these tweets off. Still, the promise of Angela “Thee Original Thespian” Bassett doing the thing and finally getting the Oscar she’s long been due for her powerful performance as Queen Ramonda in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever fueled me. Dressed in a gorgeous purple Moschino gown, Bassett looked every bit of the Wakandan royalty she brought to life (and – spoiler – death) just months ago. I just knew that this was going to be her night.

Sigh.

In the stacked category of Best Supporting Actress, it was Jamie Lee Curtis who walked away with the Oscar for her role in the box office giant Everything Everywhere All At Once. Curtis’ win was a surprise. Besides Bassett, Curtis’ co-star Stephanie Hsu was the other fan favorite and natural shoe-in for the category, bringing audiences to tears as Michelle Yeoh’s daughter and nemesis in the A24 film (which also took home seven different Oscars, including Best Picture).

However, knowing the Academy’s history of excluding Black women and having read some of the blatantly and violently anti-Black rationale behind their votes, we shouldn’t have been surprised by Bassett’s snub. (Days before the awards show took place, several nameless trolls within the voting body freely discussed their resentment towards the Black actors and directors in EW’s annual secret ballot reveal. One voter’s beef with Bassett’s Wakanda Forever performance? “It's a comic book, and she was a comic book character.” How astute.) Nonetheless, the loss still stung. When Bassett’s name wasn’t called, the fans weren’t the only people taken aback. Most of her fellow nominees offered up big smiles and overeager cheers, but Bassett’s face fell, and you could very clearly see the disappointment in her eyes. She couldn't mask the fact that her feelings were hurt — and she shouldn’t have had to.

Hawk-eyed Oscars viewers took notice of the actress’ crestfallen reaction, and unfortunately, some actually took it upon themselves to try to teach her a lesson in etiquette. (Before you even ask: yes, they were.) Many people on social media took issue with the fact that Bassett didn’t stand to applaud for Curtis or fake a smile in the moment. Some jumped at the chance to call her a “sore loser,” suggesting that her very human reaction was more about ego and “entitlement.” Let them and the racist anonymous Academy voters tell it, Bassett should’ve been thankful just to be included in the nominations.

Here’s the thing: losing sucks. No matter what field or industry you’re in, no matter which way you look at it, not winning is a crappy feeling, and it doesn’t get easier the older you are or the longer you’ve been in the game. In Bassett’s case, it probably feels even worse because it’s yet another slap in the face. After an awards season (there are multiple other award shows that lead up to the Oscars and act as predictors of the winners) where Bassett was the clear favorite, her omission from the winners’ circle is even more frustrating. It’s a reminder that no matter how talented she is — and she is so talented — her work may never be good enough for this establishment.

Bassett has been working in Hollywood since the late 1980s, becoming a household name through the success of projects like Boyz in the Hood, How Stella Got Her Groove Back, What’s Love Got to Do with It, The Jacksons: The American Dream, Malcolm X, Waiting to Exhale, and countless others. Her work, just like her beauty, is timeless, and it has always been excellent, no matter the role. Yet, in these almost 40 years of consistently incredible performances, Bassett has been overlooked by the Academy. It’s hard to wrap my mind around it, but with hundreds of acting creditsunder her belt, she has never won an Oscar. Not a single one.

The Hollywood veteran has been candidly optimistic about the trajectory of her career and the fact that she doesn’t have an Oscar yet. We may feel that she should have won in for What’s Love Got to Do with It — a portrayal so convincing that a whole generation was convinced that Bassett was Tina Turner — and should have at least been nominated for several more roles over the years, but Bassett hasn’t taken it too personally. In a recent interview with CBS’ Gayle King, the actress shrugged off the losses and chalked them up to fate.

"Of course, in the moment you're hoping and praying and wishing, but I never walk away thinking I've been robbed,” Bassett shared. "That's too negative of an emotion to carry with me for the rest of my life. I choose to believe there was a reason why it didn't happen."

That typically sunny outlook and the humility that she projects despite literally being Angela Bassett makes this loss (and the subsequent negative discourse about her response to it) feel especially egregious. Following the global success of Black Panther, the stakes for its sequel were sky high, and the cast and crew of the Marvel Cinematic Universe knew that picking up the story of one of the most beloved superheroes of our time without our real-life hero would be a Herculean task. But Ryan Coogler and the cast of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever were up for the challenge and exceeded expectations by telling a new kind of superhero story. From its soundtrack to its historic Oscar-winning costuming, every single aspect of the film was moving, but Bassett’s performance as the grieving Queen Ramonda was especially poignant; her grief-stricken throne room monologue shook audiences to their core. (Months later, we stillhaven’t forgiven Ryan Coogler for what he did.) Her final act as the Wakandan matriarch was so impactful that it made history, earning the MCU its first ever Oscar nomination for acting — a significant achievement considering the industry’s snobbery towards the superhero genre. With her performance, the MCU was finally seen as real cinema, as real art.

Given the heavy lifting Bassett did for her film, for the genre, and for Hollywood with her portrayal, it’s only natural for her to feel letdown by the loss at the Oscars. But in a space where Black art, feelings, and people aren’t a priority, she was demonized for a perfectly normal reaction. Interestingly enough, Bassett wasn’t the only loser in her category to not plaster on a smile after the announcement; The Banshees of Inisherin’s leading lady Kerry Condon was also noticeably stone-faced upon learning that she’d lost. And across other categories, many of the male nominees didn't crack a smile either. Yet Bassett’s facial expression is the only one being picked apart, criticized, and demonized. Wonder why that is.

Beyond my natural instinct to want to defend Bassett (that’s Muva!), I have so much empathy for her in that moment and in the conversation that resulted from it because I’ve been in her position. All Black women have. We know that society holds us to the highest standards while simultaneously leaving us no margin for error. Misogynoir demands that we always be the best and brightest in every room — the most talented, the most put together, the friendliest — but it also intentionally strips us of our humanity in the process. The emotions of Black women are rarely respected or taken into consideration within these spaces. Having a bad day at work and being quieter than usual? People take issue with it and single you out. Standing up for yourself in an unfair situation? You’re quick to be labeled “aggressive” or “intimidating.” Even when you’re on the opposite end of the emotional spectrum, happily doing your thing and feeling yourself á la Beyoncé, it’s a problem. They want to humble us in triumph and then ask us not to be human in defeat. The perpetual policing of our emotions is the reason why so many of us are constantly performing happiness and trying to be agreeable, even to our own detriment. It’s not about masking or trying to fit in; it’s about survival.

Angela Bassett was robbed at the 2023 Oscars, point blank period. It wasn’t the first snub, and knowing this industry’s thinly veiled resentment towards talented Black women, it unfortunately will likely not be the last. Even though she’s been rejected and ignored by the establishment time and time again, Bassett has never let it stop her from doing the work that she loves. She’s an artist through and through, a thespian dedicated to her craft, a maverick devoted to the culture. She does this because she’s passionate about it. And that love of telling stories — telling our stories — will always serve a purpose far more important than anything the Academy has to offer.

Still, before anything else, Bassett is a human being first. And while the Academy may owe her an Oscar or two (or five), she doesn't owe them a single thing. Not even a smile.

Wow, am I finally getting to this show? The last episode comes out in a week so this is perfect timing for me technically. I'm still pretty caught up on Beyond Evil and Lee Dongshik/Han Joo Won but I believe the show can hold my attention still.

Very good last episode. Gave us some angst and tied up some loose ends in the first half. Made me sooo giddy in the second half.

Overall:

I really liked it, especially for what it was: a cute, endearing high school BL with really endearing leads and good acting and sometimes turning tropes on their head.

I didn't love it or obsess over it the way some people seemed to but it was enjoyable nonetheless. I also loved so many of their faces lol Fourth and Prom my favourite beautiful faces but Gemini and Satang are beautiful too, not to mention Gun's mother whew!

This made me giddy and the OSTs are great and there's clear effort from the cast and crew. I liked the dynamic between the characters, whether it be how Gun and Tinn took turns being bold and shy or the parent-child relationships or Chinzhilla band. I might increase the rating by 0.5 if the characters continue giving me brainrot.

Ah, it has certain of the same parts but the new story is so much better. The trailer showed some of the usual tropes of pitfalls of high school BL and I'm glad the final show managed to make them fresh and interesting. Also Fourth looks like a babyyy. I guess he was 17/18 during the final filming and so was probably 16/17 during the trailer but he looks more than just a year younger - aw child
