1: How many works do you have on AO3?

178 fics, since this is a fic writer meme.

2: What's your total AO3 wordcount?

1,193,590, with the caveat that that includes a collab fic of 190,409 words of which I was primarily writing only one of three POV characters. (And also one other shorter collab and the minimal amount of words required to describe the podfic/fanmixes.)

3. What fandoms do you write for?

Mostly Shadowhunters (TV) atm, a lot of BioWare Games (especially Dragon Age 2) and then a truly random smattering of smaller games and tiny!fandom prompts back when askbox games were more common here plus Yuletide/Fic Exchange Matches On Unexpected Things. (I think I've broken 20 fandoms on AO3, depending on how one counts the various DA sub-fandoms.)

4. What are your top five fics by kudos?

These are all Shadowhunters and Malec fics. The first three are complete, the last two are WIPs.

My only posted 5+1 fic, a series of outsider perspectives on Alec & Magnus & their very long day of denied cuddles/alone time. 😅

Parabatai Feels & Magic Lore! I wrote this for a Season 3B countdown event, and it's Magnus Being A Nerd and trying to figure out how this parabatai thing works. I snuck Jace and Michael Wayland feels in there kind of sideways too. I do think it's one of the most self-indulgent things I've ever written (epistolary! melancholy comfort! No Plot!) with many thanks to @rutherinahobbit because she helped me land the ending.

with an if in its soul

So I killed Alec off-screen right before the fic starts, and proceeded to keep poor Magnus very upset about it for the following 22k words. (It gets better! I promise! No one stays dead!) I got many angry and wailing comments, I have never been so proud. (This one suffered from very dramatic scope creep while I was trying to write it, which amused tumblr a lot, and this time I have to thank @poemsfromthealley for helping to make it work. And also the blurb, because I just could not figure out how to post it for ages.)

i am for you

Epistolary!Fluff Fic that was supposed to be a bit of a missed connection thing for @pameluke but Alec instead proposed to Magnus on first sight and I just kind of went with that instead. /I am not in charge of the voices in my head

It is the first fic I ever had really break containment and get a lot of engagement/comments/subs/etc. It has been out-kudosed now, obviously as it's #4 on this list, but that's only because I killed the momentum and never finished it. 😅😅😅 ISTFG I am going to finish it some day though!

if broken hearts were whole

From a soulmates/massage combined prompt meme thing ALSO for @pameluke. I got stuck on this one largely because I had three different prequel/s1 retellings in my head at the same time and I kind of tangled them all up too much to get any of them done. I will eventually figure this one out too, but I may have to finish one of the other things to sort of clean my brain out, and I haven't managed that either.

5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

In theory? I got hung up on a comment from an FTH bidder the year I failed to finish my FTH fic, and didn't want to reply to their comment 'til I wrote their fic?

which doesn't make much sense, but brains are weird, so there we are

someday I'll answer the backlong. it's only like two or three years at this point? 😅😭🤣

6. What’s the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

so about uh... five years ago? there was a really popular gifset format from an Elizabeth Hewer poem called in one timeline and I haven't the faintest idea how to gifset so I wrote a fic for Malec instead. [ao3]

I have written other things which Have Angst, but for me I tend to ease the ending... this is one of the few where I didn't.

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Everything Else! (Almost)

I think, as an exercise in the true form of Happily Ever After, I'd have to go with Fine Feathers, which is an epilogue to a Georgette Heyer Regency Romance novel I did for Yuletide 2016.

8. Do you get hate on your fic?

Not usually. I don't even get people yelling at me to update on my WIPs, which may be hateful but isn't the same thing 😅

/and I'm certainly not complaining about either of these things, but I wish I knew how I avoided The Discourse™️so I could do it on purpose

9. Do you write smut?

I used to pretty regularly. I was even known as a smut!fic writer when Dragon Age Fandom and I were mutually more active together. Not so much (on either the writing quantity or the requests for more smut) for Shadowhunters.

10. Do you write crossovers?

Mostly no? I did two very short ficlets for Bingo Squares. I do still believe that Leverage is the Fix-It Fandom that fits everywhere and thus only kind-of counts as a crossover, plus I wrote a Shadowhunters / Inception bit with Ariadne as a Warlock.

I do also enjoy a good fusion fic, aka using a different canon as an AU setting, rather than combining characters from two settings.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not that I'm aware of? I've seen it happen to co-authors though, and other friends

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

Yes! I am still stunned and amazed and delighted by this!

Batty_Blue translated several of my Shadowhunters fics into Russian:

And Pomyluna translated 'First Choice' into Polish

13. Have you ever co-written a fic?

Yes!

Only once successfully (aka one and done and finished and posted), and that was entirely thanks to my co-author Raph. 😅 (Against All Odds for @galedekarios back when I knew her as Chignon on an actual forum prior to tumblr. She's who got me onto tumblr, so if you met me here? That's her fault. 🥰)

I have started things with people a few times that never got posted, and there's a massive Mass Effect retelling on potentially permanent hiatus, though all three of us do hold out hope that someday our lives will align again. (Persephone Rising)

14. What‘s your all-time favourite ship?

Me & Sleep

(Sorry, can't do it, can't choose. Beware My Armada. With a couple ancient ship leviathans which can raise themselves from the deep with the slightest provocation.)

15. What’s the WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

Every thing I have ever posted (except for 12 Moons) is something that I do in fact hold out hope I will eventually finish.

Things I have not started posting are too numerous to count and/or list. Sometimes they come back. Sometimes they are fertilizer for other things that will be written later.

16. What’s your writing strengths?

Dialogue and hopeful melancholy? I get a lot of compliments on emotion/mood, and I do feel like I am usually pleased with the, idk, vibes of most of what I write.

17. What’s your writing weaknesses?

Plot & structure! What is? How do? What do you mean I have to have things happen rather than just reacting all the time?!?

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

I have done it with mixed success and there are definitely ways to do it more accessibly than I did. It can add a lot, but you do have to think about the execution.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

Uh. I think Lois & Clark back when I was a teen!jilly. Either that or Sailormoon when I was a slightly older teen!jilly?

In terms of posting in public, it was Bioware something, either Mass Effect or Dragon Age: Origins back around when Thing 2 was born. And he's 14 now, so... 😅

Orion's Belt, I think? I didn't originally post it on AO3, and then I deleted myself off the internet for awhile, and then I re-uploaded everything, and I'm bad at time in the best of circumstances, which that clearly was not, so it might not have been that one specifically but it was close.

20. Favourite fic you’ve ever written?

I CAN'T CHOSE JUST ONE WTF

As a formative event/process, I have a certain enduring fondness for Lost for Words, which was like the first fic I really wrote while in fandom... I was social about it and posted while I was writing and finished (eventually) and it is still the longest single story I have ever written. (Tho I am for you will beat it out when I finish that.)

It's not particuarly good from the perspective of who I am as a writer some dozen years later, but it's sincerely meant cotton candy, at least. 🤣

i'm so excited about you taking asks again ahhhh okay so. if you'd absolutely had to choose. what would be your top 5 cockles moments, and why? thank you ily <3

here’s the thing: there are so many routes i could go down with this, because cockles moments come in all shapes and sizes and formats. these include moments from their panels, their bloopers, the footage we get when they don’t even know they’re being recorded, stories being passed down from photo ops & autographs(one of my personal favorite ways to get cockles, tbh, because they’re all insane), and social media(tweets to each other, instagram posts & comments, etc.).

SO! since many a list like this has already been made, and i want to stand out from the crowd, what i’m gonna do is definitively give the number one spot to each of these five categories.(i might even throw in honourable mentions because they’re so despicably in love that they warrant that. i really put my whole pussy into this, guys, i hope you’re happy.)

disclaimer: these are my own personal opinions. but that also means i’m right. so. enjoy.

number one: top cockles panel moment

so we’re starting off with a bang, because how do you even BEGIN to rank what atrocities jensen and misha commit at jibcon. every single one they’ve had is damning in it’s own right, for different reasons.

however, considering just how much unabashed fuckery they’ve given us to sift through, it’s a good thing i do have a personal favorite despite it all. it’s heartwarming, the sweetest thing i’ve ever seen, AND it’s jarringly cinematic - mainly because it has a whole ass arc to it that was years in the making. it might even be surprising to some people, but my favorite cockles panel moment, and what i consider the one that encompasses their entire gut-wrenching journey from 2008-2013 in the most sweepingly romantic gesture possible, is this one.

i want this burned into my retinas. i am not even joking. when i'm through with my explanation, let me convince you why this is thee most romantic cockles moment of all time.

first, some history: people call this the resume off, but many seem to forget the botched attempt at a resume off a year prior. and yes, you guessed it: it's during their break up. it's a juicy time period for a reason, guys. it came across as exceedingly one-sided and VERY awkward. let me refresh your memory as to just how bad it was, and just how hard jensen was trying and ultimately failing at winning misha over: the funniest part of the whole resume off in 2013??? every joke/bit had literally already been made/done. they were just going through the motions again, but the difference THIS time...is that misha reciprocated jensen's energy. it. is. fascinating. i want to get into it more detail in another post, and i'll link it here when i'm done, but the main takeaway, i think, and the main difference that showcases how much they've grown in a year, is that in jib 3, misha flat out refused to do an accent, and this time around, he indulges jensen for literal minutes. when i tell you they're crazy, they're crazy. i can't wait to actually dive into it later.

ANYWAY, the resume off culminates in this moment here. and, like, a million things happen in this gifset. actually, more like a million and one. the music starts playingneediremindyouthatthesongissingingintherain(h e l p), misha starts dancing, jensen 'perpetually fake grumpy' ackles lets misha think he's not going to join, misha sits down defeated, but no!!! that was jensen's plan all along(look at his stupid fucking smirk) and he offers his arm to his dance partner who immediately grins like a fool, jensen then leads misha into their kick step, they perfectly synchronise and let loose, and are then very clearly having the time of their lives, hanging off of each other with joy and ease. from their expressions alone i can tell that this moment is so. so. so. so! much more than what initially meets the eye. i mean-misha is fighting back the biggest smile i've ever seen. to me, it reads like jensen is offering something to misha, something that misha kind of gave up on expecting, and him offering his arm like that is like, a surprise to him in the best possible way(and it's so not platonic, let me just say that.) as soon as jensen did that, it ushered in a new era of cockles. this panel is jensen and misha's favourite for a reason, and i think this moment is the biggest clue as to why.

whew!!! ok. that took a lot out of me and that was only point one. moving on,

number two: top cockles blooper moment

cockles bloopers hold an extremely special place in my heart, because it shows just how fucking disastrous jensen and misha are. they are so goddamn infatuated with each other that they HOLD UP PRODUCTION ALL THE TIME TO FLIRT WITH EACH OTHER(???). let me repeat. let it sink in. jensen ackles; arguably one of the most professional actors on that show who puts everything he has into each scene, with mountains and mountains of notes to prove it: would rather hold up production to flirt with misha collins. this sounds fake. it's not. he does it. all. the. time. and here's the thing guys!!! i'm gonna let you in on a secret!!! misha loves it. he loveesssss it. on top of that-misha collins: overlooked because he's pranked and people assume he's unprofessional as well, but his only pranks are in retaliation/off-set, and he rarely if EVER causes problems if he can help it....lets himself get carried away when it comes to jensen making kissy faces at him!!! are you actually kidding me!!! i mean. misha. it's just a face. you've seen it a million times. i don't buy that it triggers something in you that strongly....you like it, and you like jensen's reaction. you can't fool me!!! lisa berry's face in that one gifset shows just how fed up the crew is with their gross, coupley boyfriend antics.

i could pull up so many examples. sooooooo many. but my favourite was sealed since the moment i saw it.

i actually already wrote an analysis on it but i can't find it :(((( which SUCKS because i really unpacked the whole thing. i'll try to summarise.

basically, a backstory is part of this too!!! jensen and misha both had a really really hard time with this scene(because it's explicitly romantic there i said it), they sat down for hours and poured over their scripts together, they were super super nervous going into filming, both of them, jensen especially, were super hard on themselves for their performances not being true to their characters but they both complimented the other's work(boyfriend moments fr). so, yeah. they weren't confident going into shooting. and how do they get themselves to feel better???? by cuddling each other, apparently.

a lot. a LOT. happens in this specific blooper. to the point that i saw it years before i knew about cockles and it raised all sorts of flags for me.

1) stop pulling my face towards your crotch(as a thinly veiled request that misha would, in fact, move jensen's face towards his crotch, considering it was jensen moving himself there in the first place. also, why so comfy down there guys???) 2) you're my baby daddy i know(in the most intimate voice i've ever heard please) 3) i know, i know, i love you too i didn't say i love you i know but you wanted to say it etc. misha's right, of course. that's what jensen meant.

it just reeks of comfort, familiarity and intimacy between the two, and it's a moment that is extremely sweet and silly at the same time. they're so <3

number three: top cockles found footage moment

WONDERFUL category. truly the culmination of the cockles experience. many people have said that shipping cockles doesn't work because 'they're just onstage you dummies!! they're playing it up for the audience!!!' here's the thing, love. i could not disagree with you more. once you climb your way up the cockles ladder, you soon learn that they are, in fact, playing their dynamic DOWN, not up. they really are just Like That™, and they could not care less about the paying audience, if we're being honest, considering how much time they take to giggle with each other and refuse to let the audience in on the joke. and i love them for it <3

anyway, my point is that this category is for all you naysayers out there, all you 'jensen and misha's relationship is just for show and is real life queerbaiting'(?????lordhelp???) oh yeah? ok, explain this.

he. he. he calls jensen sweetheart. literally enough said. there's nothing to really add here, except, misha and jared then immediately engage in damage control. jared's method is distraction and misha's is retconning('get out of the car, dude') this was what got me to buy into the cockles dumpster for GOOD good. you don't call your buddy sweetheart accidentally and sound so completely earnest while doing it! especially not when that buddy is jensen ackles!!! you think he would let any of his friends call him that? do you?

one more thing; if it was a slip of the tongue, little mouth thing or whatever, you think jared wouldn't have jumped on it immediately??? i can hear it now. 'did you just call him SWEETHEART???' yeah. that's what i thought. you know why he didn't? because it was too revealing.

number four: top cockles autograph moment

i mean, i think we all know what it's gonna be, and if you don't, well, do i have the piece de cockles resistance that is gonna send you over the edge.

if you haven't heard of this story by now, as a cockles, truther, i'm gonna go ahead and get you to read it, because there is no possible heterosexual explanation for any of it, and you're fooling yourself if you think otherwise.

spoiler alert: it's the story where phones weren't allowed in an auto session, jensen nuzzles himself in misha's hair, leans his full body weight onto him, holds his hand, etc. etc. i'm imploding just repeating this back, actually. also, just, the sheer amount of stories from photo ops where they tackle hug each other or slap each other's asses or sing romantic songs to each other or almost kiss is, frankly, a lot. if i could wish for anything, it would be to witness them in person.

and finally,

number five: top cockles social media moment

this one is super difficult, because there's obviously a lot to choose from. but you know what? full send, i'm going with this one:

i just. what to say about this. how often do misha and jensen watch sunsets together for it to qualify as ‘always’ ??? why are sunsets synonymous with their relationship??? that’s like??? a very romantic thing????? ‘this guy’??? the fact that it’s a CANDID??? i don’t know guys.

I throughly enjoyed the new taskmaster episode, maybe it's because of the lack of enthusiasm in the dark void of my current life, maybe because it is good indeed, or even both who knows? I like all the contestants so far, especially my beloved Alan, and I think the series is going to be a good one

let's talk about it!!!

i'm really optimistic about the series based on the first episode! i'll start off with some actual observations and slowly derail into just...all of my thoughts, probably:

victoria coren mitchell

the contestants have a bit of an older average age, interestingly! if you think back to some of the 40-something+ contestants (richard osman, bob, mel, hugh, noel, rhod, mark watson, liza, etc.), they all 1) didn't try too hard and sacrifice comedy in the meantime, and 2) had great, comfortable rapports with greg. their seniority in the industry gives them the confidence to dick about, challenge greg, question the format, flub on purpose or cheat and get away with it — and all without trying too hard. plus, a lot of these comedians know greg and alex from being in the same business for a while. so i've alwaaays loved the more mature contestants, and this season the youngest is 35! i'm so excited about that!! you can tell from the first episode alone they're mostly gonna laugh at themselves, which i love??

on the whole, the tasks weren't overly complicated — BLESS

is there a studio audience or did the editing team just NAIL the laugh track? IT'S SO MUCH BETTER WITH LAUGHS. the dry echoes of s10 (which i just rewatched) fucking scarred me oml i'm so happy with this

i think desiree dressed a little flamboyantly for the recorded tasks, but i'm actually so happy no one wore a totally ridiculous outfit for the duration of the series. it's kind of an worn gag at this point (kudos to the first contestant or two to do it, and phil wang's cock which i'll probably never forget). victoria's outfit? the long skirt with the boots and her lil gloves? so cute ogdkjfghflkdhzk

not to call victoria out but did we not all predict exactly how she was going to be? mocking/question the tasks while also being the most competitive one there? the way MORE THAN ONCE she didn't even digest all of the information on the card to do the tasks correctly yet clearly cared enough to feel a little demoralised at botching them... so victoria. WHICH WAS VERY CUTE ;_:

why is alan already so tired omg LMAO let my man take a nap and get a bonus point for no reason, he's already been through enough IN LIFE!!! also unrelated but his skin is beautiful

guz is the only contestant i wasn't really familiar with before the series but he's already...so funny. i'm CACKLING when he breaks out the pure pakistani accent and his comedic beats are gold. can't yet decide if he's an affable weirdo (à la paul chowdhry) or a lowkey nutcase (mel giedroyc) but i cannot WAIT to find out

"you may buy the tools you need with time" is not shakespeare yes i googled it

guz's fit in the studio was sick. i also love that alan's look was exactly hugh dennis', sean lock's...just. that classic 50yo button-down and kicks. which warms my heart for some reason

greg has had quite a few crushes throughout the series, i'd gander morgana is next on his list but i won't be surprised if it ends up being guz... the absolute slut that man is smh

not to put pressure on myself to make a gifset but to the people who requested it i clocked many alex breaking character moments and they have been DULY noted.......

do you want to hear how fucking delusional i am... i have been contemplating getting a second ear piercing for a couple of years and when i saw victoria laying on the car creeper and clocked her second hole i was like "okay i need to do it"

for the live task, i tried to play along by picking a cool hobby, a fun animal, and a famous person, and what immediately popped into my head was "ice skating, emu, david mitchell"... psychologist followers, please analyse me

MOBILE RULES

FORMATTING:

- I almost always use regular small text, with icons of varying styles.

- If you want to write with a character of mine, but are uncomfortable with the icons for whatever reason (say, you don’t want to write with cartoon fcs, are uncomfortable with my fc) just tell me! I’ll either use different ones, or go iconless.

- I don’t mind what kind of formatting you use (or don’t). As long as I can read and understand your writing, we’re good.

WRITING:

- My first language is Brazilian Portuguese. I write in that language as well as English.

- There will not be any smut ever written here. I am very uncomfortable with sexual conversations and with rping smut due to past experiences, so please don’t insist on this or keep talking to me about it..

- I write in third-person, present or past tense. I’m cool with my partner not matching this, as long as I can keep writing as I’m comfortable.

- I tend to write short threads, especially when I write in English, because I’m a bit insecure. The longer a reply is, the more I worry that I’m making mistakes. That doesn’t mean I won’t ever write multi-para, though! I do my best to match my partners and give them something to work on.

- Guilt-tripping me into replying to you will only get you a block. I’m tired of this shit. Asking once if I’ve seen a starter/reply is all fine and dandy, but repeatedly doing it will just make me feel like this is a job and thus lose interest.

TRIGGERS:

- My triggers are rape, incest, and pedophilia. Incest is my biggest one, and it’s not only what is technically defined as incest that messes me up, so I’m being very specific here to avoid any issues.:

1 ) characters related by blood, regardless of being raised together or not.

2 ) characters not related by blood, but have a family dynamic. example: Sesshoumaru and Rin

3 ) I don’t know how to categorize, but I’ll list here two specific pairings that really bother me because they come too close to incest for me and go into why.

SwanQueen: Regina is Snow’s stepmother. Therefore, she is Emma’s step-grandmother, though she didn’t exactly raise either. The reason it really gets me is because I was abused by a grandparent, and automatically associate this ship with that.

Maggie and Jackson (Grey’s Anatomy): They were not raised together, and are not blood-related, but their parents are married and it makes it all very uncomfortable for me.

I absolutely understand that for some people this is all well and good as long as the characters are of age, and I will not judge you for writing these ships at all. I just want to feel safe, so I ask you to tag the ships mentioned if you can remember.

- I thought I was fine with this, but I realized recently that I am not. Catradora triggers me, and though I’m not gonna enforce this a lot, since so many of my partners play as Catra/Adora and love the ship, it would help me IMMENSELY if you tag fanart, gifsets, basically anything visual depicting them as a couple

- If you need me to tag something, please tell me. I use the following system for triggers: tw trigger

SHIPPING:

- I roleplay MOST of my muses as bisexual. Call it projection if you will, you’re probably right. However, if a character is clearly stated as being a lesbian, gay, ace, or pan, I will NEVER erase that.

- I ship characters who are within the same age range. So characters who are teenagers in canon will only be shipped with characters who are also teenagers in their canon. If at some point those characters have an age difference that makes one of them an adult while the other is underage, I will not write shippy things with them within that time-frame. For example: Ruby and Pyrrha. I will write them as girlfriends when they are both teens, and I will write them as adults. But I will not write shippy threads with them while Pyrrha is an adult and Ruby isn’t.

- I don’t do teacher/student things regardless of age as it makes me uncomfortable.

- Should go without saying that I will not write any of the couples mentioned in my triggers above.

- If two (or more) characters spend most of their time together in canon treating each other badly, or one of them spends most of the time berating the other, it’s very unlikely I’ll want to write them as a ship. It’s not ALWAYS a no, but I just don’t want to write a ship where my character is constantly berated.

RESTRICTIONS:

HOW THE MUN RUNS THEIR BLOG .

SPEED.

insanely slow ? with small moments of high activity . for the most part it runs a queue with a large separation period between posts . since work takes me away days / weeks at a time with not any real time to get on and be productive , when i’m able to i like to try and make things run or drop at least once every few days ( though even that has been increasingly hard for me lately )

REPLIES.

replies are generally dependent on how well my muse is going ? they can vary in length but i try to keep them around if not a little longer than who i’m writing with . sometimes i can only muster short thing , so those will be the only things that get published and other times , it will just be a mix of whichever my muse feels like it at the time . i like my icons small ( 60x60 ) but i don’t care how my partner formats . since my format if for my own aesthetic person , i’m open to however my partner wants their posts to look . if my partner would prefer no icons , i don’t mind dropping mine but if they aren’t bothered , i will keep my icons and they can do whatever they wish . i don’t care how you choose to format or not format your reply . my only stipulation is cut threads but i usually do that for both of us if need be .

STARTERS.

i very rarely will write an open starter , mostly because i tend to lose track of what i’m doing a lot so for my own sanity , i keep those to a minimum . i am however more than happy to write random ones , plotted ones , or anything in between for me and my partners . every now and then , a starter call drops when i will have time to sit down and be productive .

my inbox is typically open to anyone . even though my threads are mutuals only , unless we’ve talked , i’m more than happy to accept memes and questions and ooc stuff from anyone at all . ims are also always open if you need an ear .

i mean , i’m selective ? with an inability to be on all the time , and mental issues enough to build me a very comfortable home , it’s the only way that i can keep my sanity . if i look over your rules , muses , blog , and don’t see any way that we could interact or that my character would interact , i won’t follow you ? i follow mututal exclusivity in threads as to not get overwhelmed , some muses are exclusive to certain writers because of comfort personally .

WISHLIST.

i have a wishlist tag , it consists a lot of just what my muse would want ? whether it be a gifset or a list of actual plot ideas . i think it’s a great tag for any blog , worthy of a look , but also i’m not upset if nothing comes to fruition for it . sometimes it ends up being a placeholder of ideas that i will then go and bother people about , but you’re more than welcome to look and poke me for stuff from it , or attack me with ideas from you own !

☕ How to make gifs! Beginner Tutorial ☕

Hey guys, so by popular demand [and me actually becoming a little bit less lazy] I have decided to release my own version of a gif tutorial - this is just a step-by-step guide on how I personally make my gifs, feel free to ask me for clarification on any bit of this.

This is very PICTURE HEAVY and for beginners either in giffing or Photoshop in general - everything is explained in detail, from absolute scratch.

Things you will need:

Photoshop CS6 [or any with timeline should do]

Avidemux

FreeStudio Video to JPG Converter

A gif sharpening action [the one I’m using has been deleted :’( but any will do!]

We’ll be making the gif below:

STEP 1 - FOOTAGE

This is a very important step, please try and download the highest quality content - things like 1080p and 720p are the best quality but you can find things in HDTV quality which are also workable! I won’t recommend any sites in particular because quite frankly I don’t trust many sites myself, but PLEASE be sure to have a good anti-virus.

STEP 2 - CUT CLIPS

I am assuming at this point you have the video you want to work with and you are ready to go. This is the point where you open Avidemux [download linked above]. You have to cut the clips you want to use; this honestly helps so much and will be an absolute lifesaver so believe me it is not a waste of time. The start screen will look like this:

File > Open [and then select your video of course] and let it load. When it loads, find the bit you want to gif.

Place the marker where you want the clip to start, and press the A button. Either let it play or fast-forward, it doesn’t really matter, to the point where you want it to end.

BEFORE YOU SAVE THE VIDEO - Please remember to change the OUTPUT FORMAT from AVI muxer, which it will be pre-selected on, to MP4 muxer, as seen below.

Now you’ve done that, you are ready to save. Top left hand corner, you should see the little symbol highlighted - this will then lead you to save to whatever folder you are more comfortable in finding it again, Videos is always a good category - NAME IT SOMETHING RELEVANT [for example grant1 cause I’m giffing several scenes by grant gustin or if you are giffing a particular scene, something said in that scene, like ‘right back at ya’ or if it’s a particular scene, something like ‘shave’, ‘dance’ etc.

STEP 3 - SCREENCAPS

So, in order to create your gifs, you have to screencap your clips. I am actually going to link a tutorial already made of this programme HERE, and clarify only my settings, as seen below. Make sure you select EVERY FRAME when doing gifs, and make sure you set the location to somewhere on your desktop [if you’re doing more than one clip, having a subfolder on your desktop may be easier for keeping them together!]

When you are done, go and sort your caps into subfolders [the caps that are going to be 1 gif, should go into a subfolder] Numbering these is probably the easiest way to do it. Try and keep in mind the size of the folder, and I wouldn’t recommend more than say 60 frames for each gif estimated depending on the size you are using.

STEP 4 - LET’S START GIFFING!

^^^ OK so you have capped your clips, and you have sorted them into subfolders [each subfolder being a gifs worth of caps] Open your Photoshop, and then FILE > SCRIPTS > LOAD MULTIPLE DICOM FILES.

Pick the subfolder from the place you saved it - and simply click OK. The above gif was titled ‘8′ in the folder. Wait until it loads, depending on the amount of frames and the size it can take a little while.

STEP 5 - TIMELINE

[Ignore the little icon of Danielle Panabaker in the corner, it’s just the PSD I created that I will be using later to colour] Once the frames have loaded, your screen will look similar to this - Click on ‘CONVERT VIDEO TIMELINE’

This is how your screen will look! Press the little three squares in the bottom left hand side of the screen [highlighted yellow for you]

First thing you need to do in order to not forget - click on the above and switch it to ‘Forever’ otherwise your gif will be static after it runs fully once, which is useless for us as gif makers. Now let us proceed.

STEP 6 - FRAMES FROM LAYERS/DELAY

Above you will see highlighted the steps you need to follow - click on the icon highlighted and choose the option MAKE FRAMES FROM LAYERS.

You actually can’t see in the above but there will now be a bunch of frames on the bottom of your screen in your Timeline. Press on the highlighted icon once again and press SELECT ALL FRAMES [you can do this manually of course but sometimes this is actually easier].

Click on ANY of the arrows on any of the frames and you’ll see the above options coming up - click OTHER. I always set mine at 0.05 and this tends to be the correct setting :)

STEP 7 - CONVERT TO VIDEO TIMELINE

After having set your delay - press the highlighted icon and click CONVERT TO VIDEO TIMELINE.

STEP 8 - CROP/RESIZE

Now, you can do this step at any point really, but I have decided to do it here - when you become a bit more used to it you can do it closer to the beginning but it’s using the crop tool to make the gif your wanted shape. If you want a square, the top left hand should be changed from 2/3 to 1/1. UNCLICK THE DELETE CROPPED PIXELS OPTION until you feel confident enough that you won’t need to alter your cropping!

SIZE - Press Ctrl+Shift+i and that should bring up the above screen - edit to your liking [anything over 300px width will stretch unless it’s actually 540 or larger] I usually go for 245 for my gif packs, but if I’m making a gifset, the dimensions are 270 [for 2 gifs side by side]

STEP 9 - SHARPENING

In order to Sharpen [I would always recommend you do this btw] press SELECT>ALL LAYERS && FILTER>CONVERT FOR SMART FILTERS. The result can be seen below - this is what it looks like when you’ve done it correctly! :)

Go to your ACTIONS, and then select the action you have loaded into Photoshop [tutorial on loading actions into photoshop] and press the play button, all of which have been highlighted below. It will then look the way it does below [it needs to replicate layers etc so it will go from a single thing to a couple of frames/edited, that is normal!]

STEP 10 - APPLY YOUR PSD

What it says on the tin tbh - open your PSD and drag it onto the gif, you will be fine!

STEP 11 - SAVE YOUR GIF

You can either do what I do and use a shortcut Ctrl+Shift+Alt+S, or you can go to FILE>SAVE FOR WEB. Either way, you will come up to this screen - You need to do some things here:

Make sure the bottom left hand side, the gif is smaller than EITHER 2mb if it’s for a gif pack [or to be placed in text threads of any sort] OR 3mb if it’s for a gifset that is going to be placed in the image section of Tumblr rather than a text thread.

Make sure you change the ‘Once’ to ‘Forever’ YOU NEED TO DO THIS EVEN IF YOU DID IT BEFORE because it automatically switches back every time which is irritating but you gotta do it!

Click SAVE. Save to the folder of your choice.

ET VOILA!!

You have produced a gif - congrats love! It gets a hell of a lot easier with practice and you can always make an action of the way you make it which makes it a lot easier to make them and a lot faster!

NERVE AGENTS

WARNING: This post is about chemicals frequently used in acts of war and terrorism- particularly acts that have recently made headlines and been a very real, terrifying, and deadly part of people’s lives and news cycles. This post does not explicitly reference any particular real-life attack. That being said, it does present information aimed at writing the human response to exposure to nerve agents in a fictional and/or whumpy context, and does mention several uses of nerve agents in fiction. If you’re not comfortable with reading about such things, or don’t feel comfortable reading them in those contexts, feel free to keep scrolling- if you do want to read it, the rest of the post is below the cut.

Guys, I am on so many lists now. Like so many. I have googled so much sketch stuff for this blog I’m going to have to ask my sister to order a new humidifier for my snake’s tank because if I order one on Amazon the NSA is gonna send a SWAT team to my apartment... But anyway...

It’s been a while since Hawaii Five-0 S1E23 “Until the End is Near” premiered, and yet there’s a gifset that hasn’t stopped circulating in the whump community: one of Danny Williams, struggling to breathe, sweat covering his face, sliding slowly down a stone wall as the rest of the team runs towards him in panic. Later in that episode, it would come out that Danny ingested (or rather absorbed through skin contact with the episode’s victim) sarin, a chemical weapon well known for its longstanding applications in war and terrorism.

What "Nerve Agents” Are:

As explained in the episode, sarin belongs to a group of chemicals known as nerve agents. Medically, nerve agents are called acetylcholineseterase inhibitors. Some common ones include:

“G-Series”- These were pre-WWII-era, and probably the most well-known nerve agents. They were originally invented as highly-effective pesticides, but were realized as chemical weapons when the scientist and lab assistant testing tabun both accidentally came into contact with less than a drop and became severely ill for several weeks.

Sarin (GB

Tabun (GA)

Soman (GD)

“V-Series”- These were invented during the Cold War for the express purpose of creating chemical weapons. They stick around in the environment for longer without degrading than G-series agents, making them more useful as weapons. The most well-known is denoted “VX,” but there are many others named with “V’ and then a second letter.

Organophsphate Pesticides- today in the US, about 50% of pesticides can double as nerve agents. They come in very dilute concentrations and degrade very quickly, making them less useful as poisons. However, farm workers with long-term exposure have had significant health problems as a result. In fiction, the pilot episode of Royal Pains features a case of organophosphate pesticide poisoning, and (though this is not explicitly stated) Mac is poisoned by some variety of these in the MacGyver episode “Bitter Harvest”. The most well-known of these include the substances malathion and parathion. Since 2001, it has been illegal to use these substances in residential areas in the US because they tend to stick around in the environment long enough to potentially harm humans. They also reek.

How They Work:

Normally, when the brain wants something done in the body, it sends a signal via nerve to the muscle, gland or organ responsible for it. The end of that nerve then releases a neurotransmitter, and molecules of that neurotransmitter bind to receptors on the tissue, triggering the intended effect. When the job is done, the excess neurotransmitter is either slurped back up and recycled for next time, or degraded by an enzyme so it can��t hang around and make stuff happen when it shouldn’t.

There are many neurotransmitters in the human body, but the most important one for this post- and one of the most active in the body- is called acetylcholine. Presence of acetylcholine at receptor sites triggers secretion of mucous, tears, and sweat, causes muscle to contract, modulates memory and attention, and helps control digestion. Now, in order for these things to happen correctly, only very precise amounts of acetylcholine can be available to the receptors for very precise amounts of time. Once acetylcholine does its job, it immediately gets broken down by an enzyme called acetylcholinesterase.

This acetylcholinesterase stuff is super important. If is didn’t exist, or was, say, inhibited, acetylcholine would just hang around and build up in the areas where it does its work. This would cause all those things above to happen continuously and inappropriately. Which is exactly what happens when nerve agents, which are, as I said, very potent acetylcholinesterase inhibitors, end up in the human body.

What They Do:

People (and by extension characters) unlucky enough to be exposed to a nerve agent will typically show symptoms of severe acetylcholine poisoning. “Classic” symptoms include:

Pupil constriction

Headache

Difficulty breathing (from contracting muscle and excess secretions in lung passages)

Profuse sweating

Weakness

Excess tear formation

Fasciculations (muscles contracting inappropriately)

Nausea/vomiting/abdominal pain/diarrhea

Urinary frequency/incontinence

High heart rate and blood pressure

Higher doses will show symptoms progressing to:

Seizures and coma

Paralysis

Low heart rate and blood pressure

Respiratory arrest

Most people end up dying from paralysis of the respiratory muscles.

How quickly symptoms show up has to do with how the chemical got into the body- breathing a nerve agent may cause the onset of symptoms almost immediately, while absorbing it through the skin can delay onset of symptoms up to 18 hours.

How They’re Used:

Nerve agents are colorless liquids that can enter the body by ingestion (eating or drinking a substance containing them), absorption (through skin, eyes or mucous membranes), or inhalation (breathing a vapor or gas).

While nerve agents are poisons and can certainly be used to target a specific individual (as in the H50 episode), they are particularly well-suited to war and terrorism because of the ability to poison many people at the same time- and poison them quickly and repeatedly.

Spread by aerosol, they can persist in an environment (and continue killing people) for up to three days (three days in colder, wetter environments- in hotter, dryer environments they may last less than 24 hours).

Only a very, very small volume of any nerve agent is required to kill a person. A normal-sized drop of sarin placed directly on skin (and not washed off) is more than enough to kill an adult. If breathed, death requires considerably less.

Surviving Them:

If your characters have no access to drugs, people can survive very small exposures without them- particularly skin exposures. Since the main deadly issue is respiratory arrest, getting control of their airway and forcing air into them is probably the most important intervention (I say “forcing” because given the airway constriction and the excessive secretions, this won’t be easy. Like, good luck if they’re not intubated).

After their airway and breathing is taken care of (if you have to get to circulation, meaning CPR, its too late in a mass-casualty/drugless situation, but that’s a whole other post), getting them cleaned off is really important. This is both to protect people taking care of them, and to make sure they don’t continue to absorb the agents. Nerve agents degrade when exposed to alkaline solutions, so plain old soap and water (or bleach) works pretty well as a decontamination solution.

Now, if they do have access to drugs, the above holds true, but...

In the H5-0 episode, Jenna tells Steve that Danny needs a drug called pralidoxime in order to survive. Pralidoxime is a nerve agent antidote that works by chemically reactivating the inhibited acetylcholinesterase. Unfortunately, it only works if given within a specific time frame after exposure (2 minutes for soman, 5 hours for sarin, 13 hours for tabun). Pralidoxime also doesn’t work immediately, so other drugs must be given to mitigate the effects of the nerve agent and keep the person alive until the reactivated enzymes can bring acetylcholine down to safe levels.

The first drug given for this is atropine. Atropine works by blocking some of the acetylcholine receptor sites. If there’s only a few receptor sites available, it matters less how much excess acetylcholine is around because it can’t do as much harm.

Another drug given is diazepam. Diazepam can stop or decrease seizure activity related to nerve agent exposure. Like atropine, it is not an antidote, but it can help manage life-threatening seizures until the pralidoxime works.

Now, none of these drugs can be effectively given orally. They’re best given IV, but since the poison works so fast, most people don’t have time or resources to start an IV to administer them. The solution to this is the “Mark 1 Kit”- a case with two auto-injectors (think epi-pens), one containing pralidoxime and the other containing atropine (this was the type of kit featured in the Royal Pains episode mentioned above).

The auto-injectors are designed to be given simultaneously or one immediately after the other, as soon as possible after symptoms appear, by the exposed person if at all possible (one of those “help yourself before assisting other passengers” things).

Another type of kit is also available, called the duodote, and contains both drugs in one auto-injector. Duodote kits are also available in bulk for response to mass-casualty events. Though specific drugs carried in the national stockpile are not published publicly, pralidoxime, atropine, and diazepam are likely included.

As it stands, Ambulances (and, I’m assuming law enforcement vehicles??) in major US cities carry Mark 1 or duodote kits for the medical and rescue personnel serving inside them. Military personnel serving in areas where nerve agent attacks are a potential hazard may carry up to three. In the case of an attack, if exposed and symptomatic, rescue personnel can self-administer the kits, or provide “buddy aid” to unconscious personnel. These kits are not for use, typically, by civilians.

Note that people do not get immediately better when treated. These are primarily life-saving drugs, and repeated doses and medical care may be needed for weeks to months after.

Protecting Against Them:

For your characters who may be called into service to respond to a nerve agent attack (or who may be going in after a character exposed to nerve agents), there are a couple of options for keeping them safe(r).

There are a few options for detecting nerve agents in the environment. These range from “M8″ or “M9″ paper pads (which detect agents by changing color when exposed), but that only work on liquids, to more sophisticated and very expensive machines that pull air through special detectors that can identify chemicals that have been vaporized or turned into gas.

Currently, “Level A” personal protective equipment is recommended by OSHA for any potential exposure to nerve agents. For reference, that’s this snazzy suit:

In addition to this (or instead of, if your characters are feeling lucky), there is a chemical option for preventing nerve agent poisoning. A drug called butyrylcholinesterase is currently in development to bind any nerve agent before it has the opportunity to cause problems in the body. This could be given to law enforcement, medical, and rescue personnel in the event of a nerve agent attack where they would need to be fit enough for duty to respond and have a high likelihood of becoming exposed.

Zoo 3.01

I am rusty and out of practice so bear with me, especially since I spent 2 hours after watching just basically keyboard smashing and yelling "I DON'T UNDERSTAND ANYTHING ABOUT ANYTHING THAT HAPPENED."

Anyway, today's review format is subheaders with bullet points that are really more like single-idea paragraphs and only get longer as I go. This review is also based on my live-viewing notes and not fact-checked with a second watch.

Plot Partners: Abe / Dariela & Suspicious Clem

Abe became a doctor? Dariela has sketchy contacts Abe can't know about? They are kick-ass parents on top of all that, despite their own crappy childhoods?? I have no idea what's going on but I'm excited.

Is anyone going to explain how some dogs are apparently unaffected by the mutation or...? Is it because doggos are so Good and Pure?

What is this clumsy retcon that Clementine was obsessed with babies/dolls? She tried to take like 10 stuffed animals and zero dolls with her when they left Boston in season 1. I mean I guess she did risk her life to save a baby from murder crows, but... Speaking of which, looks like season 3 will finally be the year nobody has to rescue a baby after its mother is brutally swarmed to death!

Hot Rugged Action Hero Jackson (& Friends)

Hey so listen I'm going to need you to stop force feeding me this relationship because I am still not there yet. Maybe when I am there, I will enjoy the fact that you threw like 5 different types of my favorite shippy scenes into one episode, but for now I'm saying things like "Ctrl+Alt+Save this kiss for when I care."

I am super excited that Jackson can control lions With His Mind, though. Tell me more.

And give me ALL of the Primeval monsters. That prehistoric rhino thing was my 2nd favorite part of the episode. (and to be clear: when i say Primeval, I am referencing the awesome British TV show and its little Canadian sibling, not just an adjective)

Although I do sort of like that she re-purposed Mitch's lab into her own computer science-y lab. That's something we should probably write stories about. Speaking of...

Backstory Tentpoles a.k.a. Fanfic Prompts

I could let you claim that Jamie banged Logan at some point in the last 10 years, or I could just go "haha cool I guess we're calling that wilderness trek and about 7 days on the plane dating now" and speak no more of this evil.

I love that it sounds like Jamie and/or the Ragtag Band Of Failed Heroes got to keep hold of Clementine for 2 or 3 years, at least, before she apparently got ripped away and spirited off by Max. I will actually die of pain right now if I try to even imagine what that change was like, but it's gonna be gold for someone to dig into. Several someones, actually; there is plenty of room.

Speaking of things that will make me die of pain if I try to think about them: Jamie going on multiple expeditions over the years to try and find him.

Particularly the one where she finds his glasses.

His bloodstained glasses.

#HELP THE DYING IS STARTING

F YEAH ALPHA SHIP

Actual reaction to That Scene: *rolling my eyes* "Jamie has all the opportunity in the world to meet more terrible men" scene right on cu- WHAT, WHAT THE JIMINIY JIGGERS IS GOING ON / NO NEVER MIND I DON'T CARE AND DON'T NEED CONTEXT.

I have too many feelings about this so mostly Imma spend them on other peoples' posts and/or gifsets, but my heart is in roughly 9000 pieces as it finally dawns on me that this being Mitch's dream = Mitch comforting himself with Jamie telling him it's going to be okay and she's going to find him = can somebody please call all the ambulances

...also I keep looking at the deep and somewhat disfiguring scars he’s got, and wondering how Jamie might react to them. These are significantly different from the usual barely-there scars fictional characters fret about; these are the kind of scars that force you to confront exactly what kind of nightmare horror pain this person went through and how maybe it's even worse than you ever pictured.

Billy Burke Proving Why I Spend Every Autumn Transitioning Out of Zoo By Tracking Down His Other Work

I am running out of brainpower and have none left to process this plot, so I will just say: as much as I hate that Mitch is surrounded by strangers upon waking up, and suspicious strangers at that, it is kind of amazing to see him like this. It's Mitch, but it's Mitch stripped of all snark and the command he usually has of any given situation, even when he's just blustering his way through it. It is all kinds of painful to see him confused, mistrustful, frustrated by his inability to communicate or even really understand what's going on. Mitch looking this lost and withdrawn into mental retreat is quite a gut-wrench.

(it's also really good mental fodder for hospital fic. I'm just sayin'.)

My Favorite Sideshow: Mushy Father/Daughter Moments

So...that girl with Mitch definitely looks more like Young Clem, which is the only consolation prize I have for losing our amazing original actress, and it would line up with Max sequestering her away and/or being involved with shadowy forces. But it would be interesting if they're setting up Badass Clem to LOOK like she's a sketchy Clementine imposter, but actually be the real girl who is angry and embittered by her circumstances, while IADG seems more than capable of making up fake nonsense to manipulate Mitch into giving up info.

That said, my tiny human heart is not big enough to hold the amount of pain there would be if the first thing Mitch found comfort in upon regaining consciousness turned out to be a lie. I need him to recognize his own kid. That bowed head / forehead nudge killed me even more than the dream sequence.

What's REALLY going to upset me is if one of the girls is like a...clone of some kind, so that they're both technically Clem, but not. Or one is part-hybrid. I feel strongly like part-human hybrids are gonna be a Thing. (Mind you, I usually am very wrong when I start predicting.)

tl;dr Mitch + Being A Mess Of Emotions About His Daughter is my actual favorite thing about this show.

In conclusion: I still have no idea what’s going on but I am excited to see the rest.
