Can you talk about investing in your looks on a budget? Beginner level friendly resources and pointers 💕
UPGRADE YOUR IMAGE
Sure! To be honest, this is where I am at currently in my life.
I wouldn’t say beginner, but I am starting a more mature chapter of my womanhood. I am beginning to build a new everything: attitude, boundaries and beauty/hygiene routine.
Im not going to waste my time giving you “beginner level” tips. This would be more like a crash course on how to invest in your appearance for the years to come.
Set a Budget: Soft & Hard
You may or may not go over budget, therefore it is important to set a “soft” budget and a “hard” budget. A soft budget is an amount you do not want to go over, however it’s acceptable to go a few dollars over if you don’t think it’s a good investment to put something back.
A “hard” budget is simply an amount where you must put something back that’s lower than the limit you set for yourself.
Before you invest in anything, invest in discipline and reasonable boundaries with yourself.
Find Your Undertone & Complimentary Colors
It’s not about which colors look “good” on you, it’s about the colors you turn heads in.
Here’s a YouTube video I used as reference to find my undertone and best fitting colors
Build a Capsule Closet
Invest in your looks by knowing how to put together an outfit. A last minute outfit or one that was planned for months (like the outfit you’re wearing to Beyoncé’s concert)
A capsule closet is a few select pieces that are compatible with multiple options in your wardrobe. It’s a strategy to help you avoid a cluttered closet and still having “nothing to wear”
Start with this article and this video
Learn Beauty Skills & Techniques
My best investment recently was learning how to do my own hair, nails and wax.
Self beauty maintenance was also a way for me to feel better and get out of my depressed funk. So, I learned how to do my own mani’s and pedi’s. I learned how to braid my own hair and wax myself (which wasn’t easy I won’t lie. Waxing strips for the win)
I feel more comfortable allowing others to service me now that I know how to service myself.
Miscellaneous Pointers
Start with Rainbow
Don’t invest into clothing until you’ve learned what colors & cuts look best on you, not just good. Take advantage of their clearance section and experiment with the clothing.

My night hygiene routine
Oil Pulling
On Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, I use coconut oil to oil pull for 15-20 minutes (I also put rosemary and coconut oil in my hair and scalp on Mondays during this time)
Oral Hygiene
Then, I start doing my oral Hygiene. 1. Floss. Always floss before brushing. 2. Brush with a gum health focused toothpaste. Some people claim there’s no difference, but I like to use that specific one just to be safe. 3. Use purple whitening toothpaste and brush for 2 more minutes 4. Scrape and brush my tongue to make sure i’m clearing out all the bacteria from the day. 5. Use a gum health focused mouthwash.
Dry Brushing
I do this before every shower to help with stretch marks, cellulite, and to act as an exfoliant. (I also put a hair mask in on Thursdays)
Shower
{this is the order i like to shower in} 1. Wash out mask or oil if i have it in my hair 2. Start scrubbing my head with my scalp scrubber and shampoo for 5 minutes, shampooing twice (on Monday and Thursday) 3. Wash my whole body with a bar soap and a washcloth, really scrubbing until i feel clean. 4. Put conditioner in if it’s Monday or Thursday 5. Exfoliate with a body scrub 6. Shave with shaving gel on Wednesdays 7. Follow up with baby oil and let that soak in 8. Rinse conditioner out 9. Use a washcloth and whipped soap or body wash to wash my body for the second time 10. Use my back brush to scrub my back with a salycilic acid body wash to fight against bacne 11. Turn the shower off and exfoliate/ wash my feet really well. (that all looks like a lot but i don’t do it all every night! there are specific days for certain things)
Skincare
1. Use an oil based face wash to wash the dirt and grime and makeup from the day off 2. Wash my face with my salycilic acid face wash 3. Use a lip scrub 4. Toner 5. Niacinamide serum 6. Thick layer of moisturizer and gua sha my face 7. Castor oil on my brows and eyelashes 8. Apply pimple patches if needed 9. Cover my lips in Vaseline
After shower
1. Slather my feet in Vaseline and put on thick cozy socks. (I don’t sleep in these but I leave them on for an hour or so) 2. Put coconut oil and Glycolic acid on my stretch marks 3. Mix a lotion and body oil and apply that to my whole body neck down 4. Change into comfy cozy pajamas!

The significance of oral hygiene, a core component of personal care services, often gets overlooked, especially as we age. However, it’s crucial to understand that maintaining good oral health is not just about keeping your teeth and gums in shape; it’s also directly connected to your overall well-being. Poor oral hygiene can lead to a host of medical issues, from cardiovascular disease to diabetes and respiratory infections. Indeed, the mouth is a gateway to your body’s internal system and needs to be treated with the same care and attention as any other part of your body.

Femme Fatale Guide: Best Sleep Hygiene Habits & Tips For Better Sleep
Daytime Habits:
Stop drinking caffeine at least 8 hours before you want to go to sleep
Move daily: A 30-minute walk or a short pilates video is enough if that's all you can manage
Get some fresh air/natural light and/or supplement with vitamin D
Ensure you're getting adequate magnesium and vitamin B12 in your regular diet or through supplements
Nighttime Habits:
Tuck your phone in at its "bedtime": Leave your phone in the charger across the room. Out of sight, out of mind.
Have a physical book beside your bed to start reading at a certain time. Around 30-60 minutes before you actually want to go to bed. Find a book that puts you in a calm mood. A book that's too engaging will be counterproductive.
Have some "sleepytime" tea around 30 minutes before bed (Chamomile tea is a great choice. I love the Yogi Soothing Caramel Bedtime tea).
Limit the lights on for an hour or so before you want to go to bed. Only keep the light on near your bed if possible. Keep your curtains closed if necessary.
Practice deep breathing in bed: You can do a full 5-10 sleep meditation or just do a few sets of belly breaths (one hand on your chest and the other on your diaphragm or upper stomach)
Use meditation or a self-pleasure practice to relax enough to fall asleep.
To get on a proper sleep routine & fight insomnia:
Allow yourself one day to be exhausted, so you go to sleep "on time" and give yourself enough time to get (at least) around 6 hours of sleep. This helps your body "reset," at least for a few days.
When you close your eyes, picture one of your favorite memories and re-experience it without allowing other thoughts to enter your brain. This helps calm your mind, so you more easily drift off to sleep (I've been doing this for around 15-18 years and it's golden)
Have a journal or notebook with a pen by your bed: This allows you to write anything down that you forgot about or need to do, sudden inspiration that arises before you fall asleep, or a place to write out your feelings to help relax before going to sleep. It's better than having your phone and gives you no excuse to go pull it out.
Have a bottle of water by your bed, so you can have a few sips if you can't sleep from being (even a little) dehydrated.

my intentional morning routine:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
-I wake up around 6 AM, instead of immediately getting on my phone like I used to. I lay in bed for a couple of minutes, allowing my body to realize the transition it is making.
-After that, I immediately drink a full bottle of water. This is pretty easy for me because when I wake up, I’m usually dehydrated even if I don’t realize it yet my body does. I’m able to do this quickly and easily by grabbing a water bottle the night before. By the time I wake up it’s usually warm, warm/hot liquids are actually very beneficial to your digestive system. This helps my digestive system get a head start on the day.
-I move onto making my bed. A step I never used to incorporate because I always felt it was unnecessary but once my bed is made I rarely want to ruin the work I’ve created which urges me to not get back in it.
-Tea. I always drink some type of tea in the morning, my go-tos being ginger or green. This is another thing that I do for my digestive system as well as overall calmness. Instead of doing another task while having my tea, I like to enjoy it and simply take gratitude in the drink.
-I then go into breath work, I do a Nadi Shodhana technique of alternate nostril breathing, as someone with severe anxiety breathing has become a big part of my journey in managing it. Even if I’m not feeling anxious I love to get a head start on it (something I learned from my therapist). I tend to do this practice for a few minutes and find my body in a completely calm state afterward.
The Technique:
*Sit in a comfortable position for me this is usually with my legs crossed.
*Place your ring finger on your left nostril and your thumb on the right.
*Cover your right nostril and breathe in through your left, cover your left nostril and exhale through your right nostril and repeat.
*When you are finally done with this practice exhale fully out of your left nostril.
-The next thing I like to do is engage in prayer and gratitude. I have created a specific prayer that I repeat every morning, although it changes when needed. I simply express gratitude by writing out everything that I am thankful for in that moment in my journal.
-I then move onto hygiene and breakfast which I’ll usually have a smoothie or oatmeal if I’m not fasting.
And that’s my intentional morning routine!

can you give some tips on fixing your sleep schedule?? i'm in my summer break and i need to fix it in two weeks for school 😭
FIXING YOUR SLEEP ROUTINE
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
ADJUST YOUR BEDTIME BY 15-30 MINUTES EARLIER PER DAY, until you get to your ideal bedtime. This helps the body to readjust and start feeling tired at your bedtime.
That being said, you also have to re-establish the time you wake up. It is much easier to go to bed the earlier you wake up. Your body may start feeling tired earlier, as more energy is expended in the morning.
CREATE A BEDTIME ROUTINE. Have a time in which you start your bedtime rituals, which can be anything as long as they are not physically or mentally exhausting. It is best to keep your evening routine simple, as you don’t wanna overwhelm yourself right before bed.
AVOID CAFFEINATED DRINKS AND SUGARY FOODS BEFORE BED. These foods and drinks should be consumed at least 4-5 hours before you go to bed. Caffeine will delay your body clock and sugar can disrupt your sleep.
LIMIT NAPS, or just don’t nap at all. Naps are fine in general, but if you want to change your bedtime, it is best to avoid napping. If you do need a nap, keep it under 30 minutes and don’t do it after 2’lock.
GET SUN FIRST THING IN THE MORNING. When we seek natural light in the morning, it tells our internal body clock that we are waking up, and when done regularly, our bodies will naturally wake up at that time.
NO DEVICES IN BED. This can be a permanent rule if you want, but temporarily, do not allow any kind of devices in your bed. Regardless of how you want to use it. If you do need to use it, sit anywhere else but your bed. Even the floor! Avoiding devices while in bed will make it easier for you to fall asleep, as most of the time devices can distract us from some shut-eye.
PRACTICE GOOD SLEEP HYGIENE. I have a whole post on this, which can be found in my master list. Sleep hygiene is the practice of setting habits and rituals that promote healthier and better sleep.

A Former Funky Bitch Guide for Remaining Fresh
Tumblr media
As I do my scrolling, I have seen (and liked) many posts that go in depth about a hygiene routine however they’re all very…minimal. Unrealistic for most, dare I say. I only say that because though they may be useful for the ideal woman, a large percentage of women are beyond a standard hygiene routine and need something a bit more thorough. Myself being one of them.
Many women sweat fast which produce body odor rapidly. As our menstrual cycle approaches, body odor may become more pungent. Pregnancy may also produce pungent body odor temporarily and sometimes permanently. Remember, many women are still dependents (minors or college students) who are unable to change their diet yet your diet is an important factor towards production of your body odor.
This post is for my young ladies who may lack the privilege of having (parental) guidance for hygiene. Many of us like to downplay it as common sense, however I’ve personally experienced, witnessed with friends and worked with teens in poverty ridden neighborhoods who lack the knowledge of what many consider the basics of hygiene. In fact, many mothers are so envious of their daughters they sabotage them in that matter. This is real life.
This post also heals my inner teen because I was that teenager. Depression played a part. Parental negligence played a part. Lack of authority played a part.
Enough chit chat, here’s bullet points that you can screenshot and save for quick access in order to improve your hygiene to feel and smell as feminine as you are. This is a safe space:
African black soap has played a crucial part in stripping all of my body buildup unlike many body wash/bars of soap. It can irritate you, so I suggest purchasing diluted versions if you know you have sensitive skin. Otherwise, many beauty supply stores or African salon/shops sell African Black Soap.
Detoxing my underarms weekly with Aztec Clay, along with the t-zone (nose and center of forehead) of my face to minimize oil production on my face.
Cornstarch as a base before spraying deodorant to slow down the sweat. I use two drops of almond oil and lather my underarms up, apply the cornstarch (with a makeup puff? I forgot what they’re called lol yikes but wedge sponges work too) and seal it with my deodorant. You may want to put your shirt on first. This technique is similar to placing setting powder after your primer to keep your makeup from becoming dewy.
Wash bra and panties in the shower with me at night and when the AM hits I place them in the laundry. Sometimes the shirt I’ve worn if I need to.
Spray perfume on the arms of your shirt (CAUTION: If you have skin easily irritated, you may not find this tip useful.) Do not spray directly onto skin and instead spray within the underarms area of your shirt. Useful if you lift your arms often and are insecure about blowing a whiff regardless of if you have sufficient hygiene or not.
Keep wipes and dog poop bags in your purse: ladies let’s leave behind using solely tissue to freshen up after going to the bathroom. I’ve learned that many bathrooms don’t have garbage bins within the stalls or they’re only attached to the paper towel dispenser, so having dog poop bags that I can place my used wipes in has came in clutch.
Perfume/ Essential oil on dryer sheets in dresser or closet (CAUTION: FIRE HAZARD do NOT place dryer sheet with perfume or essential oils in the dryer. Can cause a fire especially with the old ass dryers y’all got). Also try this same trick if you bring a change of clothes to work/school to enhance the freshness.
A ziplock bag with a rag: If you work at a job that keeps you active and you cannot control your body’s reaction or you simply want to freshen up on your half hour break, this is a quick way to wipe away the sweat + natural buildup and remain smelling fresh. I’ve personally done this; it’s similar to a hoe bath.
You go to the bathroom, get you some hot water, you’ve already put African Black soap on your rag so it lathers up on contact, wash your arms/under boobs/intimate areas if you’re freshen up during your period (don’t use soap let alone the African one! You’re going to be burning jalapeño spicy), pat your clean area dry with a towel and proceed with your routine that may include cornstarch, deodorant and spraying body mist across your body. Ready to roll?
If your quick to sweat from your forehead, keep a scarf that you can use as a bandana/headband. I highly suggest these specific types below because you can easily manipulate it based on your outfit at the moment in need. I’ve worked at fast food, I’ve had to carry groceries, I’ve had to fight and sometimes the LAST thing you need is sweat getting in your eye (especially if you’re a fellow black girl. An edge control and sweat combo in the eye is not fun)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Activated charcoal in two ways: as an absorbant pad that can be placed as a sticker inside your clothing to avoid sweat stains or as a bath soak since charcoal contributes to expelling unwanted bacteria from your body which can be a factor behind your body odor.
I use these tips for my advantage and convenience. When I am going to an event that I know I will be photographed, I make sure I keep those underarm pads on me literally. I change my clothes at the gym often so I place perfumed dryer sheets inside a ziplock bag with my clothes so my perfume is not overwhelming but enhanced. My anxiety I’m not a fan on period cups when I’m out and about and cannot afford an accident, so I absolutely keep baby wipes and poop bags in my purse to dispose of my waste quickly and freshen up as I need to. It set me back $4 at Family Dollar…
Anyone and everyone should try these to make their lives easier. I hope this post was able to come across someone who needed this guidance because Lord knows I did at some point. Cheers to growth! 🕯🧿

My morning hygiene routine
This takes about 40-45 minutes every morning <3
Oral hygiene
1. First, I floss. You want to floss before brushing because you don’t want the stuff between your teeth left in your mouth. 2. I brush my teeth with whitening toothpaste for 4 minutes, making sure to hit every part of my mouth. 3. Then I use my tongue scraper to make sure I’m getting all of the build up off of my tongue because that’s what makes your mouth stink. 4. I end with using mouthwash for 2 minutes (I suggest Therabreath or Smartmouth)
Next I do skincare
1. I wash my face with a salycilic acid face wash because it helps with my hormonal acne 2. Ice roll my face to help depuff and lessen redness 3. Pat dry and follow up with a toner (I use Glycolic Acid) 4. Use Hylauronic acid and Vitamin C serums. 5. Apply a moisturizer with Spf. 6. Last for skincare i use a thick lip balm on my lips and let that absorb
Hair
This step is pretty small for me because i’m trans and have short hair, so usually i wet my hair with a spray bottle and then use a bit of sea salt spray to add some texture. Then i brush it out with a round brush.
Smelling Good
1. Wipe your armpits with a cleansing wipe and put on deodorant. this makes sure there’s no build up of bacteria before putting your deodorant on. 2. Next I put a scented body butter all over my body and vaseline on my feet and pulse points. 3. The vaseline is to make sure my perfume oil sticks and lasts as long as possible. I also spray a spritz or two on my clothes for the day.
Hands
Lastly i trim and shape my nails if needed, apply a vitamin nail oil, and use a handcream

The dentist scolded me for using pick flossers, which is fair because they're less effective. But I tried string flossing again and it makes me feel like an absolute buffoon. I can't keep a hold on the string because it instantly gets slippery, it seems I can't grip it hard enough to push it through the tooth contacts, the string starts fraying immediately which makes things harder, and I'm not flexible enough to actually wrap it around my molars to clean them properly. Chat what the hell is wrong with me. How do people do this daily.

Skin care 101
Know that you don't need a 10-step, expensive skincare routine for a good skin. But, you can do the bare minimum like--
#1 Stop touching your face. I don't get why people complain about acne and skin problems when they keep picking on their face, rubbing their nasty hands all over their face.
#2 Wash your face if you get sweaty. Don't wipe it with napkins/hand kerchiefs.
#3 Never pop/pick on your pimples. And there's nothing to hide either.
#4 Stay hydrated! Don't overdo it though. Drink a litre of water (on an empty stomach) right after you wake up. Your blood will actually be filtered by your kidneys more efficiently because it's more diluted. Then drink water as per your requirement in small instalments throughout the day. And after you come back from school/work drink a litre again. Do not over do it-- people have actually died. Never restrain from using the rest room.
#5 Off topic but never drink water right after your meal. Your stomach's pH value will be lowered and leads to indigestion.
#6 Consult a dermatologist. Don't self diagnose by these home-made DIY creams, face packs etc.
#6 Exfoliate 2x a week. You can take a handful of sugar and rub it along w/ your soap on your body.
#7 Invest in a gua sha tool if you can or just do face massage w/ your hands. It really works !
#8 Ain't nothing beats a good diet. Eat them fruits and veggies. I fixed my diet and it fixed everything in my life, not even kidding.
