The morning air was crisp when Jin woke up, untangling himself from Taehyung who had somehow turned over and nearly suffocated him in his sleep. Making his way out of the rom and into the kitchen, he began making breakfast for the rest of his boys. Before he could start cracking the eggs into the pan, he heard a small whimper, the window above the sink open slightly to let the cool air into the house.
Jin thought he was hearing things at first, but when he heard it again, he rushed outside, looking around for the source of the pained whimper. When he couldn’t find anything, even after walking around the outside of the house multiple times, he began his trek back inside only to hear it again.
You were curled against one of the side beams, almost hidden against the brown cabin walls with your fur, matted and mangled with what looks like hints of blood around your tail. Despite your whimpers of pain, you wouldn’t let the man near you, no matter if he smelled good or not.
You watched as he moved forward, hands raised to try and get closer but every time he did, you hissed at him. You had your fair share of human treatment and wanted nothing to do with it. You watched the pretty man turn back around before hearing the door shut again, hoping that he would leave you alone.
But to your dismay and disgruntlement, he returned with a bowl and a cloth, not caring now if you hissed at him or not. He moved forward, sitting only a foot away from you now, and looked pained at the sight of you.
Noticing his movement, you went to hiss at him again but was too slow, his hand now scratching behind your ears making you let out slight involuntary purrs, your chest rumbling ins pure pleasure at being pet.
Jin watched as you slowly unraveled right before his eyes, your mean demeanor quickly becoming soft kitty behavior.
“See, you’re not a bad kitty. You just needed your ear scratched before falling far me, huh?” His words had you huffing, trying to move away from the confident human. The man just tutted at you, shaking his head at your act.
The man waited a couple more minutes for you to feel comfortable with him, despite your outward grumbling and huffing, before he started for your tail. You let out another hiss before he was scolding you.
“Oh, hush you big fluff ball, I need to get a look at the wounds on your tail. You don’t want to lose your tail now, do you?” Your eyes widened at the man’s words, hesitation clear in your eyes. You didn’t want to lose your tail, but you also still didn’t trust this human, even if he smells good and gives good head scratches.
Turning your nose away from him, you curl around yourself even more. You had been lied to before, had heard promises of good things and hope, until it all came crashing down, time and time again.
Jin’s heart breaks a little at your actions, your mistrust in him evident. He wonders if a human is the reason for your current injuries, wonders if they are to blame for your pain. Reaching forward again, he stops when he hears a pair of giggles from the bedroom, his two youngest mates clearly waking up.
Noticing your ears twitch at the sound of his youngest loves, he smiles at your curiosity.
“My youngest mates are always giggling, especially when with each other.” You move your head slightly towards the man, his words catching your attention.
“Jungkookie is a bunny and he loves affection. Any chance he gets he will lay over me like a blanket. I swear that boy loves to watch me struggle!”
Your nose twitches as he talks about his mates, how the tiger hybrid needs to cuddle something to fall asleep, how the fox hybrid may act like a tease but is really a baby who loves praise and forehead kisses. His oldest mate, however, reminds him of you.
“Yoongi was such a mean little kitty when I found him. He hissed at me just like you did. The mean kitty almost bit me too!” You listened as the man spoke about his hybrids, not even realizing how the man held your tail, bandaging it and then also bandaging the newfound wound on your side, his hand wrapping a gauze around your middle.
“But he is really just a soft baby, I tell you. A hand in his hair and you have him wrapped around your finger.” Just like you, he thought, seeing you nudge at his head for more pets once you realized he had removed his hands from you.
The giggling coming from in the house had grown louder, movement coming from within the kitchen as they seemed to look for him. He knew it was only a matter of time before they started to call for him, their voices growing louder until the front door slammed open.
Turning around to scold his young mates, he went to move back to make sure you were okay when he noticed you were gone. The sound of the door slamming open had scared you, your heart stammering in your chest at the sound of others coming to where you and the man were.
Jin sighed out; he was hoping to get you comfortable enough for him to bring you inside, to take care of you further and make sure your wounds wouldn’t get infected. He knew that Jungkook and Taehyung had scared you off, even if it was unknowingly.
“What’s that smell hyung? It smells like lavender and eucalyptus. It smells so good!” Jungkook asked, nose scrunching up in happiness as the smell wrapped itself around him.
“Was there another hybrid near here?” Taehyung asked, moving closer and resting a hand on his eldest mate’s broad shoulder.
Jin nodded his head, scanning the surrounding trees in search of any sight of you, his shoulders dropping once he couldn’t see you. Standing up with the help of Taehyung, he turned back around, bowl and the rest of the gauze in hand, completely unaware of your eyes watching the entire time.
The man confused you. He had been different than every other human you had come into contact with. Human were mean and selfish, taking everything for granted with a swipe of their hand. They would pillage and wound, no care in the world that hybrids like you had souls; had emotions and felt pain.
You couldn’t understand how or why the man cared for you, had bandaged your wounds like he truly wished for you to be better. You felt kind of bad with how you treated the kind human. Hissing at him when all he wanted was to help you.
Over the next couple weeks, your guilt of leaving before giving thanks to the kind human had gotten to you. While the forest was vast, filled with many different animals and plants, the laughter surrounding the human’s home was prominent, could be heard from probably miles away. It had you coming back multiple times, often leaving nice flowers or pretty, smooth rocks you had found on the porch of the house for the nice human.
You would even bring some of the pretty trinkets you had found over the years, the pile within your nest soon becoming smaller as you tried to show the human your kindness and appreciation. You had really hoped that he liked the things you brought for him.
It was morning time when you usually brought out the gifts for him, sunlight barely encroaching through the trees when you moved through the grass, trying not to be seen or heard as you held the small sunflower in your mouth.
Sunflowers didn’t usually grow in your part of the forest, and it was a nice surprise to see one so close to your nest. You had thought it would make the tall man smile, so you plucked one with your teeth and made the trek to the human’s cabin.
Slowly climbing up the steps to the front door, you noticed a bowl of milk and a plate with some meat on it, laid where you usually placed the gifts. You understood immediately that the food was for you but were nervous to take it. What if it was a trick? What if the human’s mates didn’t like the gifts you were bringing for him?
Frozen, you began to take steps backwards, flower now dropped on the floor as you began to retreat. When you were about to go back down the stairs, you heard the door open.
“Wait! Please wait.” The voice was soft, and made you want to listen to his every word. Slowly, you turned around, hunching down low to the ground so as to not threaten the man.
The man who stopped you is large, his chest almost bulging against the t-shirt he was wearing. He appeared as tall as your human, if not taller. When he smiled down at you, two dimples appeared in his cheeks, making you want to nudge them with your nose.
Raising his hands up in the air, Namjoon lowered himself to the ground slowly, trying his hardest not to scare you. Jin had told him you were skittish, scared of humans it seemed. Sitting down on the floor behind the food, he watched your form.
“Please don’t be scared of me. I just wanted to talk to you.” The man’s voice was so soothing, full of hope as you laid down where you were, your eyes flickering from him to the flower only a couple of feet away from him. Namjoon took that as a good sign.
“My partner has spoken highly of the cute little kitten he bandaged up. Has put all of the gifts you have brought him on a shelf in our living room. He cares for you a lot and has made all of us curious about you as well.” The man’s voice was calm, and you could tell he held a lot of love for his pack.
The way he held himself made you think he was the alpha, even if you could sense he was human. However, he played with his hands in a way that made you think he was nervous about something. You could only think it was you making him nervous, something you would have never expected coming from a human.
“I promise we did nothing to the food. In fact, Jimin was very particular about what food to leave out for you. He wanted to make sure it was something you would eat.” Jimin, you remembered that name, the fox, you think.
“It would mean a lot to my pack and I, especially Jin and Jimin, if you ate some of the food. Think of it as our own gifts to you.” Namjoon hummed, trying to show you that he and his family meant absolutely no harm to you. His hybrids, in fact, were so sure that you were also a mate to them, your scent so enticing to them that they often searched the forest for you, wanting to bring you back to nest, to make their own home smell like you.
You couldn’t possibly understand what you did for the humans to want to give you gifts, but your hunger and thirst took over and you made your way to the bowl and plate resting in front of you. You kept your eyes on the large man the entire time, making sure it wasn’t a trick and that he wouldn’t take the food from you.
Once you were done, you nudged the flower forward, pressing your nose against the man’s lower leg for a second before turning around and bolting from the porch, back to the edge of the forest where you hid within the tall grass, out of sight from the man who held your flower, a dimple smile on his lips as he looks down at his very own gift.
-*-*-
Over the next couple days, you had gone to leave more gifts, only to find the same bowl and plate of food, each morning holding more and more food for you. Sometimes little notes would be left by the plate, ignored by you because you couldn’t read. However, you didn’t want them to feel bad, so you would sometimes dip your paw in the mud by the first step and would press your print onto the bottom of the paper; an acknowledgement only you could give.
This morning, you were so used to being the only one outside, that you didn’t look up when you were crawling your way to the door. There were two hybrids waiting for you, the bunny and the fox. They held something in their hands, the normal bowl and plate by their legs as they sat leaning against the wall of their cabin.
They appeared to be waiting for you, their eyes lighting up when they noticed your head popping up as you moved up the steps. Their smiles enlarging as they noticed the bundle of flowers in your mouth. Once you saw them, you froze, eyes wide as you realized you had been caught once again.
“Hello little kitten. My name is Jimin and this bunny here is Jungkook.” The fox started, his voice light and soft as he spoke.
By his scent you could tell he was an omega, the sweet peaches and cream unknowingly helping you to relax, as well as the other omega’s soft apple scent. You didn’t know if they were pushing out their scent to help calm you, but that’s exactly what was happening.
You were subconsciously moving closer to them, trying to get more of their scent, causing them to smile and push their scent out even more. They were glad they were able to make you feel so safe and calm.
Jungkook was practically bouncing in his seat, wanting to scent you and have you scent him. He had been thinking about your lavender since he first smelt you that morning and has been wishing to see you again since then.
Jimin felt the same way, maybe even a little more. He just wanted to keep you under him in the nest, make sure no one could even find a way to harm you. His protective instincts were in overdrive once he had heard from Jin what had happened while he was sleeping. He had never felt this way before, even with his mates.
“We uh, we heard that a storm was coming and got worried. None of us know where you are staying or, or if you are able to stay warm and we made something for you. Well, Jin did.” The bunny, Jungkook, holds out the bundle in his arms, a knitted blanket made by Jin a couple of days ago when they first heard about the nearby storm.
Jin and Namjoon had become worried about you almost immediately, with Namjoon even enlisting the help of the younger ones to find your nest to see if it would withstand the storm and keep you safe and warm. When they couldn’t find it, your scent littered everywhere around their home, they became frantic.
Jin had spent almost three days knitting and reknitting the blanket for you, trying to make it perfect for his kitten. Over the months you had been leaving little gifts for Jin, and then for Namjoon, you had won over the hearts of the entire household. Yoongi especially was curious about the mean but soft kitty who reminded Jin of himself.
Jungkook and Jimin had won rock-paper-scissors to be able to visit with you this morning, try and convince you to join them in the house. Unfortunately, their words didn’t work, the blanket draped over your back along with the sweater that had been scented by everyone in the house for your nest, courtesy of Yoongi (even if the cat would ever deny his involvement), as you made your way back to the tree hole your nest resided in.
That night, you curled up against your nest, the new items incorporated nicely against where your head lays. The sweatshirt was your favorite, you decide. The scents left you feeling so relaxed and safe, enough so that you wish you had the real things to nest with. You wondered how nesting with them would be like, even if you had only met four of the pack members.
You had wanted to accept their offer, the warmth they gave you just by smiling down at you was something you hadn’t experienced before. You actually wanted to shift, wanted to be embraced by them and scented. You wanted to experience everything they had to offer.
The storm was expected to be the worst one the region had seen in years. Once it started, well even before it started, Jin stood by the window in the living room that overlooked the front porch, hoping for even a glance that you had changed your mind.
Not the first nor second day of the storm did they see you. They continued with leaving out the milk and food for you, but each time they went to fetch it, they were still full. This worried the men, knowing that food was going to be very hard to come by in this storm.
When you had woken up the third morning, you were soaked. The tree you resided in had broken in half due to the raging winds, knocking down a few trees neighboring your own. You knew you couldn’t stay there any longer but didn’t know where else in the forest you could go. You knew the two hybrids, and probably the rest of their pack, had opened up their home to you, but you were still scared, still had some doubts in your mind about them.
But it didn’t seem you had another choice. You just hoped their offer still stood. Grabbing the things you could, you made your way to their home. It had taken you longer than you had hoped, having to maneuver your way around the damage the wind had caused. You had even almost been blown away a couple of times yourself. But after what you guessed was hours, you finally made it to their porch, dragging yourself through the grass.
Jin had seen you coming, had yelled at everyone in the home to get things ready for you; a hot bath, warm towels, even Jimin was remaking the nest for you to climb in when all clean. The door opening had scared you a little, but once you had seen Jin running for you, you relaxed, letting him pick you up in his warm embrace.
Jin had rushed you inside, down a couple hallways until you reached a steam filled bathroom. Setting you down on the counter, he tried to pull away the items you still had your teeth sunk into to keep hold of them.
“Pretty girl, you need to let go if you want these to get clean and dry.” You still refused to let them go, not wanting the washer to take away the scents embedded in the cloth. The items you grabbed happened to be the blanket and sweatshirt that Jimin and Jungkook had given you, making Jin smile wide.
“Sweetheart, if you are worried about the scent, I can have the boys re-scent your things, okay?” If you were in your human form, you knew you would be blushing big time at being caught. Letting go of the items, Jin headed to the door, handing them off to someone waiting outside before closing the door behind him.
“Now, let’s get you in the bath and all cleaned off, okay? Afterwards, I know some excited babies who are waiting to cuddle with you and help you get warm.” You just look at him, not wanting to let him know how excited you are at the prospect of being cuddled by the hybrids you knew he was talking about.
Picking you up gently, he brought you over to the large tub, filled only a couple inches with warm water, enough to clean you. Jin was very gentle with you, scratching at your fur and running his fingers through it to unknot it. You relaxed into his touch, even purring at one point causing him to smile again.
“You’re such a good kitty. Your fur is so soft now, I bet everyone’s gonna want to pet you.” His words have your purring even more, his praise making your heart melt.
Once you are all clean to Jin’s standards, he brings you out of the bath, wrapping a soft towel around your body and carries you out the door back into what you assumed was the living room.
The first thing you noticed was a thumping Jungkook in the entryway, his sight set down the hallway where you were coming from. Once he caught sight of you, his thumping got faster to the point where he was almost jumping on his feet. He had won the game again and got to be the first one to hold you, and consequently help dry your fur off.
You noticed, that despite his extreme excitement, he was very gently with you, making sure he wasn’t hurting you in any way. He was careful with you and held you close to him as he dried you off, scratching behind your ears and down your back.
The sound of your purring had gotten louder the longer Jungkook held you, Taehyung and Jimin noticed. They were jealous that the younger had won the game, but this meant that they got to nest with you instead, so, Taehyung thought, who was the real winner here.
Begrudgingly, Jungkook let go of you when Jin came back in, letting you know your things were in the dryer, and that dinner was ready. He brought you into the living room and sat you on his lap as he fed you off his plate.
The meat was so good, you were almost licking at Jin’s fingers, wanting to get more of the delicious taste on your tongue. (When Jin had later mentioned your actions to Yoongi, the poor cat was blushing, hiding his face in his older mate’s shoulders)
Once dinner was done, Jimin and Taehyung were practically bursting at the seams, ready to take you into Jimin’s nest and cuddle with you. They had been waiting all night, pouting at any of their mates that would look their way. Even you had noticed their actions but couldn’t say anything to express your confusion.
Taking you from Jin’s arms, Taehyung had started running down the hallway into the nest room, ignoring Jin and Hoseok’s yells of concern and discipline. Jimin rushed after the younger, ready to incorporate your scent into his nest.
You were in awe of the room, having never seen a nest so big before. The entire room was drenched in the pack’s scent, your body almost instantly relaxing once again at the feeling of safety that wrapped around you.
A small rumble sounded from your chest, the sound of approval causing the two hybrids to smile at each other before climbing into the nest. The two shifted quickly, their clothes abandoned on the edge of the nest as their animal forms curled around you. The tiger’s large form almost completely covering you and Jimin, his tail moving to hold you close to his side.
Sleep was pretty much guaranteed when in the situation you were in, wrapped in warmth and covered in sweet peaches and chocolate.
-*-*-
The sound of the roaring thunder had woken you up from your sweet slumber. Stretching out, you accidently kicked the edge of the bed, causing you to sit up. You had somehow shifted back to your human form in your sleep, your naked form slightly trapped between the still sleeping fox and tiger hybrids and now joined by a sleeping bunny.
Covering your chest, you looked around for something to wear, only to find the familiar sweatshirt resting on the edge of the nest. Reaching forward, you almost squeal in happiness when you realize it had been re-scented.
Pulling the garment over your head, you feel the purrs rumbling in your chest at the feeling of the soft material against your body. It takes you a little while, but you manage to wiggle out of the tiger’s hold before climbing out of the nest and making your way to the door, but not before grabbing the blanket Jin had knitted for you.
Your feet make little pitter-patter sounds as you try to make your way to the living room, where you had heard some voices coming from. The same pitter-patter is what alerted the four men of your presence, Hoseok moving to get you a mug of the hot chocolate Yoongi had made only moments ago.
Entering the living room, you notice the four men still awake, drinking from some cups as they sat in front of the fireplace. You subconsciously tugged down the sweater, trying to cover yourself even if the garment went past your knees.
Turning around expecting to see their small kitten, they were shocked to see you standing there, wearing Yoongi’s gifted hoodie that they had all scented again for you. Namjoon’s jaw had even dropped a little, stunned by your appearance.
“Hello pretty girl.” Hoseok had walked back out of the kitchen, breaking the awkward silken that ensued in his absence. He was still stunned by your human form but knew better than to ogle at you when you were so clearly uncomfortable. Handing you the warm mug, he smiled at you before making the bold move to kiss your forehead.
“It’s hot chocolate little one. Yoongi made it with extra love.” Hoseok winked at you, smile on his face before moving back to his spot by the fire, patting the spot next to him. Blanket still in your hold, you sit down next to the man who had yet to introduce himself and covered your lower half in the blanket.
Watching everyone else take a sip from their mugs, you deemed the drink safe, taking a small sip from the warm liquid. You were immediately shocked by the taste, moving to drink more only to burn your tongue in the process.
“Careful little one. It’s called hot chocolate for a reason.” The man next to you scolded you a little, before taking the mug from your hands and placing it on the ground by your feet.
“Hoseok, don’t just scold her, go get her some water!” Jin scolded back from across from you, his back resting against Namjoon’s large form, his arms wrapped around Jin’s waist.
The man you now knew as Hoseok had just laughed before moving to get you a cup of water from the kitchen. This meant that the man sitting on the couch who made the hot drink was Yoongi, the cat who you reminded Jin of. You watched him as he rested his head back against the cushion, eyes closed as he sat there.
You were moved out of your observing by a nudge to your arm, Hoseok sitting next to you again with a smile to his lips, water in hand. You blush a little, looking down as you grab the cup from him. You didn’t notice Yoongi’s lips turning up into a smirk, nor did you notice the adoration in Namjoon’s gaze.
The entire household was wrapped around your fingers by morning, their gazes tracking your every movement, searching for any sign of distress or being uncomfortable. But they also watched as you smiled at certain things, Jungkook’s nose scrunch causing lots of cute expressions as you tried to mimic him.
The storm was still roaring outside, seemingly moving past as the thunder became softer. You had been given a pair of sweatpants and boxers from Jimin, with Jin promising to go into town once the storm was over and buy you some clothes.
You didn’t even realize that the offer to come inside their home was a permanent offer, one that they had hoped you would take. You had thought that you were just to stay inside until the storm was over, that you were lucky enough they allowed you to come inside during the storm. When Jin had offered to buy you clothes, you had hugged him so tight that he almost doubled over by the force of your embrace.
Later that night when everyone was laying in the nest, Jin had cried to Namjoon about your reaction, not understanding how the prospect of clothes had made you so happy. Namjoon almost didn’t want to tell him otherwise, fully understanding where your excitement had come from.
You had grown attached to the seven men who saved you. You had felt the indescribable bond with them, that made you feel safe and comforted. You didn’t understand it, but you embraced it. If you had to describe it, you would say it felt like Jin’s warm hug as Jungkook laughed and ran around the room away from Hoseok, the older human holding up a wooden spoon as he chased.
It felt like Jimin’s smile, his body falling onto the floor as he laughed at some joke Taehyung had told him. The way Yoongi always made sure you had enough meat on your plate to satisfy your cravings. The way Namjoon’s large frame would cover your own, keep you safe from the past demons ruining your dreams as he held you close to his chest.
It felt like home.
-*-*-
It was getting closer to wintertime, meaning your heat was fast approaching. You hadn’t told the boys about it but knew they had probably guessed already.
You had spent the past couple of days nesting, moving around your nest in the room you shared with Jungkook. You had built and broken it down a couple of times, not seeming to get it perfect enough. You had practically emptied out the boys’ closets, needing to incorporate their scent into your nest as much as you could.
Your scent had even gotten sweeter, lavender completely overtaking the eucalyptus. It frequently had the boys moving closer to you, scenting you and laying you under their bodies, their instincts screaming at them to protect and provide.
Yoongi and Taehyung especially were acting out, covering you with their bodies and not allowing anyone but Jin near you. Their feline instincts were telling them to breed and mate you, to fill you with their kittens.
When the first stage of your heat started, your entire body was filled with cramps, the touch of one of the boys being the only thing that seemed to soothe your body, to soothe the ache of absence you felt in your core. This meant that you always had one of the boys in your nest with you, Yoongi being especially possessive as your biology’s were the closest out of the three feline hybrids.
Yoongi was by your side most of the night, rubbing circles into your back as you curled closer to him. The hybrid could tell by your scent that your first stage was breaking, meaning the second would be starting soon. He could feel the heat pooling under your skin, could hear your soft moans as he massaged the skin close to your core. His chest was rumbling with pride, his alpha self proud at the fact that he was taking care of his mate.
The door opened, Jin’s head peeking through the opening in the door. Your sleeping form only stirred a little at the presence of another mate. You had finally fallen asleep when your body stopped aching, sleep much needed for the upcoming activity you were about to receive.
You had always gotten hazy and disoriented when in heat, unable to remember most of it as you would go in and out of your headspace. So, when your body finally adjusted to the heat under your skin, you couldn’t hold back your inner desires any longer.
“Alpha.” You whined, pulling Yoongi closer to you, hooking your leg over his hip and bringing him as close to you as you could.
“Alpha…it hurts.” Your whine physically hurt his soul, mind pushing him to comfort and help his omega. Moving you underneath him, he begins to slowly remove your clothes, trying to keep as much physical contact with your skin as he could.
“Don’t worry my omega, your alpha will take care of you. Alpha will knot his baby, mark up your skin like I know you want.” His words help a lot, your chest purring at his assurance.
“Alpha’s gonna take such good care of you ‘mega.” You both were naked, your hand reaching for him, for any kind of relief. You whined again, mind unable to form any sentences in your current state, only broken speech. He was prepping you, fingers thrusting in and out of your core, stretching you open for his knot.
“Alpha, knot.” You reach for his dick, trying to bring him to where you need him only for him to chuckle in your ear, whispering something about you being greedy before giving you what you asked for.
Your mind goes hazy as he slowly enters you, your walls squeezing him as he moves in and out. The pleasure is almost too much for him, his dick quick to begin swelling at his base. He moves quick, needing to bring you pleasure before he could even think of reaching his own.
This was about you, about your own pleasure.
The next couple hours were a blur to you, the feeling of pleasure so intense. When you come back to, it was Hoseok thrusting in and out of you, his hold on your hips bruising as you presented for him. Your moans were loud, but his growls were louder. He didn’t have a knot, but that didn’t stop him from bringing you to the peak of pleasure, cumming around him as he emptied his seed into your womb.
Your screams were drowned out by his lips, tongue fighting against yours as he licked into your mouth. Even though you just came down, your body was quickly heating back up, your body arching more as you cried out for Hoseok.
When you came to again, it was Jungkook sating you, his bunny biology able to keep up with your heat. It was decided early on that he would be the one to help you the most, even if the omega couldn’t knot you, his thrusts made you dumb as you laid there, eyes open and drool leaking down your chin as he pushed your head into the pillow, making you arch your back to get a deeper thrust.
When your heat broke, the haze slowly disappeared as you laid against Jungkook’s chest, Yoongi behind you with his knot still locked inside your core. His hands were rubbing up and down your hips while Jungkook massaged your back. They could both tell by your scent that you were finally out of your heat.
“Hey pretty girl.” Yoongi whispered, leaning down to press a kiss to your naked shoulder, his mark sitting proudly against your skin. You just purred in response, not coherent enough to form words yet.
A knock sounded at the door, Jin opening it while Jimin carried a tray of water and fruit. Their smiles brightened at the sight of you aware, your own smile growing to match theirs as they moved closer.
“Hello darling. It’s good to see you like this but you need to eat and drink something. Jiminie here even made the tray, just for you.” Jin brushed the hair away from your face, Jimin setting up the tray on the bed with a growing blush settling against his features.
As Jin opened one of the water bottles, Yoongi’s knot finally went down, pulling out of you before moving to grab a wet rag to clean you up with. You whine only a little bit before Jin shushes you, Jungkook helping to sit you up while Jin brings the bottle to your lips.
Helping you to drink, Jin coos softly, praising you for doing so well during your heat. “Such a good girl for her mates. You took all of us so well. Did so good for us, baby.” You blushed under the praise, moving your face to hide in Jungkook’s neck. His laughter made you even more red, his hold becoming tighter around your waist.
When you were dressed in Yoongi’s clothes, you laid against the couch cushions in the living room, Namjoon’s arm around you as he anchored you to him. Your body was aching, legs and hips tights as your muscles adjusted. Noticing your discomfort, Taehyung moved over, adjusting you do you were laying your legs on his lap as he began to rub at your muscles.
Namjoon followed suit, rubbing away the knots in your hips as you relaxed into the touch of your mates. While you rested on the couch, you listened to your other mates moving around in the kitchen, Jin deciding it was a good time to make a big meal, “to help replenish energy” as he put it. He had enlisted the help of everyone he could, but past incidents left Namjoon and Taehyung excluded.
Neither of the boys were complaining though, as this meant they got to spend more time with you. Loud laughter from Jungkook could be heard, followed by the scolding voice of Yoongi. Namjoon’s chest moving as he tries not to laugh at the scenario playing out in the kitchen. He has a feeling Jin and Yoongi are gonna kick everyone out soon.
Nothing else mattered to you though, the sound of Jungkook’s laughter being the best part of your memories, the sound of pure happiness. It was the sound you imagined whenever you were down or being drained by your past. You knew that, as soon as Jungkook began laughing, everything would be right in the world.
And you were glad that the sound of Jungkook laughing was the first thing you had heard that morning before Jin found you, otherwise, you don’t know where you would be.

"Are the preparations for tonight's show getting ready? Make sure the beasts are obedient, alright? We can't have them cause problems like last time, we got negative feedback by our VIPs and I was scolded by the higher-ups, I don't want that happening again" I hear one of the jailers say with a warning in his tone, his higher rank enough to give him an arrogant behaviour towards the lower grade employees.
"Everything's going as planned and it won't happen again, we've made sure to show them what happens if they misbehave like that once more so they should follow the rules" another man answers with a bow before they part ways and away from my cell.
I resist a growl of annoyance and huff out to calm my anger, I hate that they don't even try to hide their conversations from us, we're nothing more than animals to their eyes and it makes me mad.
Jungkook slithers under the bars of the cell's door and over to me, his own cell definitely not made for keeping a snake still and I watch as he slides through my fur and over my body until he can wrap his length around my neck to keep warm, the cold never does any good to him.
At feeling him so near, I relax a little, a nuzzle of my nose to the side of his head, the only way I have in this form to let him know that we're going to be fine, my only way to let him know that I'll do my best to keep him safe.
It doesn't help that Yoongi, Namjoon and Hoseok aren't here with us right now, we're usually kept together before a show since it improves our behaviour and makes us more 'obedient', but because of what happened a few days ago, they were taken away and locked in another cold and dark room away from here.
I feel so bad about it, if only I hadn't had that sudden anxiety attack, the jailers wouldn't have tried to knock me out with a terrifying syringe and Yoongi wouldn't have tried to attack the one closest to me.
He got aggressive on my behalf and that in turn sent him away. Hoseok and Namjoon were next as they became restless. The jailers don't like us nervous, I guess we scare them when we're in that state, we're more unpredictable so it's easier to tie us up against a wall until they decide that enough is enough.
If only I had better control of myself, this wouldn't have happened and we wouldn't be separated right now, the only thing I hate more than being put under the spotlight.
I feel a growl threaten to rumble its way out of my chest and Jungkook nudges my ear at the vibrations shaking my body, his body tightening just enough around my neck to warn me to stay silent, we managed to remain untouched this far, we don't want to change that now.
Another patrol of jailers walk near and I turn my face to stare at the cold stone wall in front of me to avoid seeing the way they point and snicker at me, I don't want to see the smirks they sport whenever they land their eyes on us, orbs shining as if they're looking at precious treasures.
It makes me sick.
I wish I could stand up and rip their throats open one after the other before fleeing this place, but I can't guarantee everyone's survival nor my own if I do that and the last thing I want is for my only family to get hurt in an attempt to save ourselves from this hell.
The feeling of powerlessness is like a crown of thorns holding onto my heart, a reminder that we're never going to be able to get out of here, not while we're alive. We're to be used like objects for the sickening entertainment of people who only await a bath of blood.
For the purpose of us being here is to bring to life a circus of hell.
Being forced to hurt our friends, claws digging deep enough into skin to draw blood but not enough to kill, this is what we have to do whenever we're thrown on scene.
If we refuse to cooperate, the jailers come in and toy at us with spears to make us aggressive to the point of losing sight of ourselves, and when our instincts take over and threaten to attack anyone too close, the game continues and the cheers get louder.
It's a game for the crowd but it's a painful world for us, we've all seen familiar souls get slain to death because they weren't good enough and the fear that it might happen to us one day follows us everywhere, every seconds of our life.
Being a mammal is one thing, we only have to try to put on a show but reptiles have it differently, Jungkook's race throwing him in an entirely different kind of game that brings much more damage to his mental health than it does for us.
There is a game that the crowd enjoys that includes gathering a group of humans into a large cage made of glass. Maybe it's because they've gathered too much debts to ever be able to pay back, maybe they heard things they weren't supposed to hear, I heard enough to know that none of them want to be here but one thing they all have in common is that they never get out of here alive.
Snakes are easy to upset and annoy, instincts going in overdrive and minds turning confused as a cacophony of sounds surround them, there's not much thinking to be done when all they want is to put an end to their nightmare and that in turn makes them attack anything close that produces warmth.
My heart breaks just thinking about what awaits Jungkook.
Jungkook is soft at heart, he doesn't like to hurt and being forced to kill is not something you grow used to, watching him turn depressed and filled with guilt the days following the inhumane killings always makes my heart ache with every and each pulse.
It's as if the jailers keeping us here have forgotten that we are at the source not entirely animals, or maybe they simply don't want to admit that we also are half humans, an in-between that has been taken from us as shifting is not a possibility anymore for any of us hybrids.
Jungkook, Yoongi, Hoseok, Namjoon and I met as humans the first time we saw each other, when we were a lot younger, it was after we were bought from the different illegal breeding farms that birthed us, we all knew at least one person from the merged group, we were all terrified and confused.
I quickly found refuge in a few of the boys present in the large room, beings that felt different to me, something about them that pulled me in as effortlessly as it was to breathe.
Yoongi was the first I saw, he was older and taller than most and had an aura of protectiveness to him that brought warmth and comfort to my frightened heart.
When his eyes fell on me that day, it was as if a connection had suddenly taken place between us and suddenly, the urge to remain together, to be each other's safe place had overruled everything else, we could not be separated anymore.
Namjoon, Hoseok and Jungkook brought forward the same emotions from Yoongi and I and since then, we've always been together, inseparable as the jailers say.
We're not the only group to have formed through the years, but we're probably the only one to turn as desperate as we do whenever one of us is taken away and that has been used against us more times than I can count.
Not long after we met, every hybrids were separated and taken into a white room one after the other. It wasn't hard to guess that what was done there wasn't good as all we could smell was fear and urine and indeed, when came my turn, they injected a substance into my body that made me feel terribly sick, confusion, dizziness and oversensitivity swarming all my senses until I woke up in my animal form, unable to shift back.
I don't know how many years have passed since then, all I know is that we're not children anymore, we're no longer the small beings that met with tears clinging on our lashes, that much we can see by looking at Yoongi's fully developed black mane, nothing like the little crown of fur he had at the beginning.
We're no longer children, no. Now, we're older, scared and broken.
"Alright, time to get a move on, come out you stupid beast" I suddenly hear from behind me, the jailer's tone of voice smug and bored, it's clear as day that he'd rather be doing something else, yet he still enjoys knowing our impending doom closer.
"And I see that snake is there too, of course, come on, don't make me repeat myself. Get that big ass off the floor and get moving, I don't have all night" he continues with a sigh and a wave of the hand, I grunt at him before standing up to walk out of the cell, my body stiff as if I hadn't moved in weeks.
The corridor separating the cells eventually fills with other hybrids and I take a look around me to see if I can recognize any of them as jailers and animals alike whine in a sound that echo on every surrounding walls, it doesn't take long after that before the whips start snapping through the air even if the humans know to avoid using them right before a show.
Some of them just want to cause pain, it doesn't matter what we do, which is why I try to be as careful as possible, I don't want to bring harm to Jungkook. I can tolerate the pain but I don't want his smaller body to get touched by those nasty tools.
When I see a panther I recognize, I slow down imperceptibly and get pushed around a little by the other animals until I reach him.
Hanse and I grew up together in the same breeding farm, we were very close before all this and that has only gotten stronger through the years, we try to stick close whenever we can, especially when my family isn't nearby.
He flanks my side as soon as he notices me and we progress through the maze of corridors until we reach a wide, smelly room that hasn't been cleaned in ages, the putrid smell of humidity filled with spores, I hate it here.
Yet, ironically, this is where the humans wash us to make sure we're presentable for the show that happens once every two weeks, I don't know if it's because their sense of smell is that weak or if it's because they don't care, but they never show any signs of being bothered by the smells of this place.
They do complain that we smell like wet dogs though, whatever that is, I don't think any of us know.
Here is also where they wash us when the show is over, both to remove the blood and to treat our wounds to prevent infections, something that has killed a few of us in the past, they eventually learned their lessons, hybrids don't heal magically when they get nearly slaughtered alive.
A loss of money, they don't care about our health but we're too precious to die, we apparently cost them a lot of money and it's our job to make sure they don't regret it.
Having to be in this room makes me be on my guards more than usual because showering never ends without problems. Anxiety and nerves make hybrids distressed for what's to come and jailers get annoyed a lot faster since they have to wash so many of us.
Jungkook hisses in worry when we've yet to find our family in the large space, a sentiment I share because they should be here, they might have been taken aside as punishment but they still have to take part in the show.
Were they kept behind? Will they be brought here later or are they already here and I just can't see them? There are many blind spots here, it's possible that they're just in a hidden corner, maybe they were already washed and kept here until it's time.
I hope they're okay.
I can't resist it when my body becomes fidgety, eyes looking all over the place, if only I could only see them, it has Hanse staring at me with concern before he nudges my nose in an attempt to calm me down, we don't want to catch the jailers' attention after all but the need to find my family and make sure they're safe is stronger than the need to keep myself safe.
With a paw, I try to convey to the snake still wrapped around me to slide over to the panther instead so I can go around and see if I can find our family but he resists, unwilling to leave me behind, the simple thought of us being separated enough to fill his soul with pain.
I wish I could keep him around, but for his own safety, and for my own peace of mind, this needs to happen, I can't bring him with me.
After some resistance from Jungkook, Hanse and I finally manage to convince him to let me go, he knows that there's no changing my mind but it doesn't make this any easier, he lingers some more seconds around me before he eventually slithers away with a sad hiss and into the comfort of the panther's fur that fully hides him from sight.
Before I go, he stretches his body until his little head pokes the side of my face and he rubs his nose there softly, a contact that has me closing my eyes to take it in, I too hope just like him to come back safe.
I leave the duo and weave my way through the sea of bodies, eyes open and on the lookout, tail low and swaying behind me as I focus on a possible trio of white, black and brown fur, of which two should be stripped.
I don't know if not finding them here should make me relieved or even more worried, but there's no time to think further about that when a familiar jailer notices me walking around suspiciously, hand signs done for the others to keep an eye on me.
I quickly avoid the few humans getting too close to me for comfort and it's as I walk past a corner of the wall that I find exactly those I was searching for, yet the sight has my heart falling to my feet just as I had expected.
The three of them are looking absolutely exhausted as they lie on the floor, chains around their neck locking them to the wall, that's not a condition to be in before the performance that is required of us during the show.
Instinctively, I whine and rush over to them, nose going to nudge them awake, this urgent need to see that they're fine and safe filling all of me, they're just sleeping, right? They're not unconscious?
If they're so badly hurt that they can't even wake up from my touch, I can't guarantee that I wouldn't try to kill one of the jailers in a burst of anger, I can tolerate others being hurt but not my family, never my family.
We've survived this far together and I can't bear imagining having one of them go, we need to stay together no matter what.
Confused and sleepy eyes blink open before falling on me and the fatigue that was weighing on them immediately flees their system as they start nudging me back with yearning, soft whimpers leaving them because how long has it been? How long were we separated for?
Exhausted as they are, they're unable to stand up yet they still try, a pull on the chains to get as close to me as possible, noses going to scent each other even though we're unable to carry a scent, scent blockers too strong in our blood, our instincts are trying anything to bring us relief.
I step closer to keep them from pulling on the chain too much and scent them back, snout pushing into the scent glands in their neck only to get annoyed because the act does nothing, there's no natural scent seeping out, nothing that is supposed to be so deeply rooted in our being filling the air, it hurts my soul yet I keep scenting anyway, heartbroken when I smell pain oozing off them like a heavy perfume.
Hoseok licks my face all over while he whines, an anxious reflex that the hyena has to calm one of us in the hopes of calming himself, I indulge him, wishing I could do more for him, if only we weren't at the feet of a show tonight.
It worries me, because Hoseok and loud noise don't go together to begin with and his weakened body and mind will be that much more sensitive, tonight worries me so much, such a bad feeling in my stomach at the thought of it.
I pull back to lick the top of his head once I feel his anxiety fade a little, can I keep him safe considering his current state? Is there anything I can do for him?
I turn my gaze to Namjoon and Yoongi, meet their worried orbs as they take me in, they too are looking me over to make sure that I'm not wounded and once satisfied with what they're seeing, the white tiger's tail wraps around my own to pull me closer before we bump heads softly, eyes closed and exhales mixing together.
Namjoon's body relaxes from having me finally close, my warmth taking from him the cold of the floor beneath our bodies, I missed them so much and I know they missed me just the same, I hate this place that keeps finding amusement in seeing us suffer from distance.
Namjoon leans back slightly to have a look at my neck, a little questioning grunt leaving him when he notices that Jungkook is not there, I motion my head towards the group of hybrids to the side to let him know that he's there, he's safe.
The tiger lets out a sound of relief before licking my face and I bring my attention to Yoongi, the huge black lion, my heart squeezes with guilt as I get closer to him, I should be the one here right now, I should've been the one getting hurt instead of him, the sight of a deep gash of red covering half of his face enough to have me cry for him.
A sad and guilty rumble seeps out of my throat and I dive forward, body curving against his own before tucking my head under his to try and show him how sorry I am, I didn't want this, I really didn't want any of this.
Yoongi's black mane covers most of my head as I push myself closer to him and he licks my neck in an attempt to reassure me that he's fine, he can sense my emotions as if physical extensions of my body and he doesn't like that, he wants to make my scent soften but my culpability doesn't go anywhere, not when I know them chained to a wall while I'm not.
He wishes so dearly he could use words to let me know that what happened wasn't my fault, but he can only let me find warmth in him as I slowly process that despite everything, they're still fine, they don't seem too badly wounded.
I finally start to relax when Hoseok's cackles alert me, his warning too late when I'm forcefully shoved backwards before one of the jailers who likes to have his way with me sits on me after straddling my body, legs and arms played uncomfortably under his weight and limbs hurting from the angle they're kept at, I can't help the surprised growl that leaves me in the process.
"Can't stay fucking still for a minute, can you? Want to end up like your friends here? Is that what you want?" his annoyingly raspy voice taunts me right in my ear, his breath nearly makes me gag from how pungent it is and I try to get him to fall off me, something that doesn't work because they've all trained, this isn't new to them.
If it wasn't for their damn injections making us weaker and easier to control and push around, he wouldn't be this confident, I hate this.
Namjoon roars defiantly as he tries to break off the chains keeping him from reaching my side, the black stripes on his white fur making him look majestic even in his current state while Hoseok's nervous cackles fill the room, the sound loud, too loud, they'll get attention to themselves and that's not what I wanted when I came here.
The jailers won't hesitate to hurt them if they decide that we're too noisy, too unstable and I don't want that for my family, not because of me, not again.
Yoongi must think the same because soon, I can notice from the corner of my eye as he moves to stand in front of them to try and calm them down, his black body hiding the sight of me from the younger ones to protect, always protect, even if it ends up costing him in the end.
I whine and growl softly before submitting, which gets the attention back on me as other jailers join our group and I let them handle me however they want, rough and hurtful but away from my family, away from Hoseok and Namjoon, their worried sounds reaching my ears that Yoongi tries to hush as I'm pulled away by the tail.
Terribly ashamed by the way others are seeing me as I'm brought out of the room, I close my eyes tightly and can only grunt when a harsh pull on my tail has my insides twisting in pain. Knowing that Jungkook and Hanse saw me like this as the door closes makes me feel awful, the snake is now alone because of me.
At least, I know the panther will take care of him but I know it's not the same, Hanse is my friend more than he is theirs, Jungkook wasn't given a choice and I know he would scold me about it later if he could.
In the overwhelming silence of the now empty corridors, the jailers keep pulling me towards a destination of their choice and I don't dare make a sound, nor do I dare react in any way, knowing that anything I do might turn against me or worse, against my family.
One of the jailers surrounding me opens a door and after the one holding my tail releases me, a sudden foot to my side sends me inside the room with force, my breath exiting my lungs abruptly before they close the door behind me with a loud screech and a slam.
It takes me a moment to get over the way I was handled, body aching much more than I would like but nothing that keeps me from moving as I usually do and when I slowly open my eyes, orbs quickly adjusting to the darkness surrounding me, it's to find myself in an empty and cold room.
I manage to stand up and after stretching to make sure that I don't have any discomfort anywhere besides my sore tail, I start walking around the large room, the scents along with the splatters of blood on every surfaces telling me that I'm currently in what the jailers call the discipline room.
I've been here a few times before, they call it discipline but really, it's just giving you enough pain to make sure that you won't act up again.
Thankfully, the fact that the show is coming up soon means they won't do anything to me but this is clearly a warning, they're letting me know that if I don't play my role well tonight, this is where I'll end up for the night, and I won't be alone then.
To smell the fear mixed with the blood, the pain and the previous tears that flooded this place as if absorbed into every surfaces, it makes me feel uneasy, tail curling around myself as I sit down in a corner, the silence allowing for my mind to play tricks on me, echoes of my family's saddened pleas swirling around me to fill the void that this place brings.
The games they play on the mind to better control us, always to control us, it makes me so angry, so tired, it's a game I don't want to take part in anymore. I've had enough, I know we all have.
We've been here for so long and every day is the same, every shows and every cheers from the crowd worse than torture, does this only end with our death?
If we're to die in this rotten place anyway, why not die while trying to stop this madness instead of dying the way they want us to?
Just thinking of Yoongi, Jungkook, Hoseok and Namjoon spending their last breath in here, minds and bodies broken, it makes a rage fuel my soul, a motivator that makes me stare at the door with a sharp glare, body relaxing so I can rest, energy that will be needed if I want to put my plan in action.
Enough is enough, tonight, I'm not playing their game, I'm destroying it.
It might end up with me dead, but I am tired of obeying them, I am tired of hurting my friends, of seeing them hurt and get hurt between them, I am tired of my family being regular preys to the jailers because of our particularities.
No... tonight, they will be the ones hurting, not us.
I close my eyes and even out my breathing. Can this go well? Or will this go wrong? Am I putting everyone in danger by trying to bring an end to this hell in which we are stuck, or am I giving them a chance at life by taking the first step?
I can only hope that this would not turn against the four hybrids who I love so deeply, but I need to do this, for them. We've been chained for far too long and if we don't try to free ourselves, we'll be stuck in here forever until we die.
No one will save us but ourselves, that much is clear.
I'd rather die trying than die whimpering in this shithole.
Jimin's POV
"I can't believe we've finally gathered enough proof to get permission to act" Taehyung says as he leans his back on the desk with sparkling eyes, his excitement easily heard in his voice, something I understand fully.
I nod, eyes fixated on the pictures in my hands, a strong resolve burning in my guts as I take in the wounded hybrids in their animal form, so many of them.
I can't even start to imagine how hard this is going to be, they won't trust us right away until we show them that we deserve their trust, how long have they been enduring this abuse? It makes me want to punch a hole through every culprits' faces.
"I know, Tae, it feels like eternity since we started, it's almost surreal that we get to save them now, after all this time..." I murmur, anxiety eating me up from the inside despite the joy I feel at finally being able to get them out of there.
There are so many different ways tonight can go. What if something goes wrong in the process of getting the hybrids outside? What if they get hurt in the process? What if the jailers manage to run away with some of the hybrids when we attack? I would hate for some to be brought back into this hell when our goal is to save all of them.
Even with most of the pictures being blurry because of conditions we were in while trying to find said proofs, you can clearly see the hybrids' fear, be it in their posture or in the way they behave around the humans, you can see the wounds that decorate their bodies and it breaks my heart to know that this has been their reality for too long.
To think that this organisation is one of many doesn't help to ease my soul, this is happening all over the globe.
Taehyung settles a hand on my shoulder and squeezes gently to try and comfort me, eyes going over the pictures neatly organized on the desk, more hybrids as well as the human patrols, the different entries and some VIPs that we need to look out for, it was a shock when we found out that the President's son was part of the people to feed this hybrid abuse.
Thankfully he's going to be dealt with by the authorities, no money will keep him from the consequences of what he's done.
"It's going to be fine, Jiminie. We have trained fighters, they know who they're going against, they had many meetings to find the best course of action, no one's jumping in blindly. The hybrids will be saved and they'll finally be free from this hell, it will happen, our plan is solid" he assures me, words hopeful, he's right, yet I can't help the worry that continually wraps around my heart.
"Jinnie is going to be part of the rescue team, I can't not worry" I whisper with a deep exhale, Taehyung remains silent but I can feel the tension that takes place in his body from the way his fingers tighten on me.
I turn to have a look at him and my guilt rises at seeing the concerned frown on his face, lips pressed into a tight line before he takes a shaky inhale. This isn't easy for him either, yet here I am focusing only on myself.
"I'm sorry, Taehyung... I know that you worry about him just as much as I do, it just feels wrong to send him there while we remain here, it's going to be so dangerous and it makes me restless" I explain, I wish I didn't lack trust in this operation but I can't help it, it's our soulmate we're talking about.
Taehyung wraps his arms around my shoulders to pull me into his chest and then kisses the top of my head, the act making me melt into his hold, head resting against his heart that beats quickly and loudly.
"I know, Jimin, I know, it's not easy but remember what hyung said, he needs us to remain here where we are needed. When they send the hybrids over, they're going to be confused, scared, they'll need us to make them feel safe, they'll need us to show them that everything is going to be fine and we can't do that if we go with him. Jin will come back as fast as he can, you know he can never stay away from us for too long" he whispers into my hair, his gentle warmth helping in calming me a little.
I nod and wrap my arms around his waist to hug him back. "You're right, thank you Tae, I'm glad you're here. "Of course, I'll never be far from my soulmates" he murmurs back with his arms tightly holding onto me.
We stay like this in each other's arms for a while longer until duty calls, everything needing to be ready for the arrival of approximately thirty hybrids, that info being taken from the little we could gather from observing the circus for over a year, it could easily be more but we're ready for that possibility.
Taehyung goes to take care of his tasks while I do mine along with many other agents.
Medicinal equipment, tranquilizers, as much as I don't want to use them, we're all aware that it might have to be done since some of the hybrids are going to be extremely agitated and aggressive, we can't afford anyone getting hurt, especially not tonight, not with the intensity of what awaits us.
"Doctor Park, we're ready" one of my assistants, Heeseung, says as he comes to stand by me, his sharp eyes and tensed jaw showing me that he too is extremely nervous about tonight, this is his first heavy case after all, his first important mission.
I look over the wide room to see the large cages we had set up, a clean space filled with warm blankets, food and water on the side, they probably won't be happy to go from one cell to the other but this is only until we figure out the extent of their wounds, we need to treat them before we can allow them more liberty around the establishment.
Each cage can shelter a few hybrids so we'll have to be on the lookout for any groups, any hybrids looking for another. We don't want to separate them during this chaotic night, that would only make them even more dangerous and that's the last thing we need, they were trained to fight each other so what would stop them from ripping us to pieces?
We can't have that happen.
"Alright, thank you Heeseung-ah, that's some good work you did there. Did Sunoo make an inventory of our stock? Will we have enough or should we send a request for more supplies?" I ask as I turn my attention to where my other assistant is currently talking with an agent.
Heeseung nods. "He had a look and we'll be fine. We have salves, stitches, pain medicine, enough shots of antibiotics for double the amount of hybrids we're expecting and the team is ready to react on your orders" he answers efficiently, his voice calm and collected despite his nerves.
I make a noise in the back of my throat and excuse myself before leaving his side when I see Taehyung coming in with a pile of papers in hands, a frown on his face. He sees me coming and hands them to me as soon as I'm within reach, something that lets me know I was meant to receive these anyway.
I look over the sheets carefully and find there the profiles of the hybrids we're expecting with a little bit more details than the last one I had looked over a few days ago. There's not much new information but this is still going to be useful for the night, the images were processed to give more clarity, we can use these to examine the hybrids as they come and fill in the blanks.
I quickly glance through the sheets, there are a lot of predators but there are some preys too, we'll have to make sure to keep them in separate rooms before we allow them a shared space, we'll have to be extremely careful with handling them, it's hard to make a proper decision since we don't know how they feel about each other.
As I read some profiles, I notice by the end five papers with a purple sticker peeking out, Taehyung notices them too and explains before I can ask. "Those are the hybrids they said we should be careful of the most. Aggressive behaviour as soon as they're separated, we need to keep them together at all cost. I'm thinking they formed a pack during their stay there so they're most likely to be calmer if they can stay grouped".
My heart twists painfully when I look at the pictures in front of me. A stripped hyena, a black lion, a white tiger, a black mamba and a snow leopard, how the heck did they get their hands on these hybrids?
These are not common animals to begin with, they are rare.
The organisation's assholes must have made use of these poor hybrids as much as possible, it's not hard to guess the mental state we'll receive them in... fucking hell.
"Okay, I'll let the others know and we'll be sure to spot them as quickly as possible, thanks for letting me know" I mumble without looking away from the pictures, but I do feel his lips press to my temple before he walks away to keep preparing for the long night awaiting us.
After taking in as much information from the files as I can, I turn on my heels and spot MJ keeping himself busy nearby by adding more blankets into the cages, his caring nature making him worried that the hybrids could not have enough, the cages can get cold so they need more warmth, more comfort.
"MJ" I call out to the man, watch as he turns to me quickly before running over, already ready to hear anything I might have to say, he hates having to wait here while the others are on the way to the circus, I know exactly how he feels but we can't do much about that for now.
I show him the files that were handed to me and give him some time to take everything in, his reaction very similar to mine when he reaches the last five hybrids that we have to look out for. He glances up at me with round, alarmed eyes before turning the pages to read more, as if in disbelief.
"I know, I have no idea how they came to have such hybrids in their hold but it can't be good. They apparently formed a pack so we need to keep them together. We don't know what state they'll be in when they arrive so keep an eye out for them, put them together as they come, no matter what, it's very important" I inform him, to which he nods, he's aware that this isn't to be taken lightly.
If we want to earn their trust, then we need to do things well right from the beginning, there will not be much space for mistakes, they'll be sensitive enough as it is. One wrong move and we could have a much harder time dealing with them later on.
I send him away after asking him to let the others know too and then look around me to try and find something else to keep myself busy with, my nerves kicking in the more time goes as I try to find anything that could make someone trip by being misplaced, is there anything sharp in a visible spot that could make the hybrids panic?
Anything that looks slightly off, I try to find but every agents here are skilled and prepared for this kind of night, everything is in order, who we have here nothing else but professionals, this is what we've trained for, what we've practiced for for so long.
I breathe in deeply to calm myself, there's no use bringing myself to madness trying to find things that are already fixed. I make a move to sit for a short moment when my phone decides to ring at the exact same time.
I take it out of my pocket to see who's calling and when I see the name on the screen, I hurry away from the loud noises filling the room as people talk and run around and move into my office nearby before bringing the device to my ear after accepting the call.
"Jinnie" I let out in a whisper, jaw clenching when I realize how obvious my nerves sound in my voice, even to my own ears, Jin doesn't need that.
'Jimin-ah, how are you feeling' he asks softly and I huff out a small sigh, I wish he could be here right now, how selfish am I?
"You're the one asking me that, hyung? You're the one participating in such a dangerous mission, it should be me asking you how you're feeling, how you're doing" I admit weakly, hear his chuckle on the other side of the line, it sounds nervous but still confident, Jin is always confident.
'Worried for me, my adorable little mochie? You forget that I have the best team of agents with me, the fighters division is getting ready to take action, they'll be clearing up the path and us rescuers are going to follow behind them to get to the hybrids, we trained for this moment, everything will be fine' he says to reassure me, I can almost hear the smile in his voice as he speaks.
I breathe in and out deeply before nodding my head as I slump on my office chair. "I didn't forget, I'm just... I can't keep myself from worrying, you know how I am, but I should show the example and believe in all of you, I know that if I look too nervous, others will start believing that this is more than we can handle... Everything will be fine, it has to" I repeat his last words, shoulders straightening and chin raising up in a mean to convince myself.
'That's more like it. They're depending on you but you can also depend on them, Jimin-ah, tonight is all about teamwork, you're the most skilled doctor we have around but that doesn't mean the others don't know what they're doing, they'll be able to follow your directives without any mistakes done. Believe in us but believe in yourself as well, we'll get through this night just fine' he muses and I allow a smile to finally stretch over my face, he's right, as always.
'We're not your usual rehabilitation center, everyone working here is the best of the best, we're all people who have been recommended by the higher management, we're elites chosen from among elites. Remember what you learned as a doctor and do your best, meanwhile I will remember what I learned as a rescuer and will also do my best. We're not aiming for perfection tonight, Jimin, we're going to take over and annihilate those bastards'.
I chuckle at that. "How is that not perfection, hyung? That sounds like exactly what we should be doing" I let out with a grin, a lightness in my chest coming back thanks to my eldest soulmate.
He chuckles lowly, a darkness to it that brings chills through my body. 'Oh, it's so much more than perfection, my love, we're going to attain the epitome of flawlessness. They won't see what hit them, they will fear this night for the rest of their life, we'll make sure of it'.
I hum and look out of the window to see the darkening sky.
"That sounds wonderful, hyung. Show them exactly what it is that happens when you mess with us".

Hybrid AU in exile arc where avian instincts can take over to a degree that is almost horrific, erasing someone’s personality and rationality when they’re panicking.
During exile week, Tommy’s abuser takes advantage of the fact, acting nice and doing traditional avian parental behaviors like cooing or wing grooming. They’re way too intimate and make Tommy uncomfortable but as time goes on and he’s starving for affection (and doesn’t want to get punished) Tommy doesn’t resist like he used to. It’s relaxing, or is until the fingers combing through his feathers stop and he remembers to shudder.
During one grooming session, his abuser asks to keep some of his feathers to wear. In avian culture that’s a very intimate familial practice, a mixture between a claim to signify a close bond as well as a promise to carry the person as safely as their own two wings. Tommy’s gut rolls at the thought of his abuser wearing his feathers, and he can’t tell if it’s excitement or dread. But he’s learned not to say no by then, and tries not to flinch as his long pretty primaries are cut.
An impulsive little stab of happiness shoots through his chest every time he sees his feathers fanning out of his abuser’s mask. He automatically feels a little safer when he sees the feathers, which the rest of Tommy is kind of freaked about. He’s starting to lose his grip on what’s him and what’s his instincts, even if his abuser keeps assuring him to trust his gut since listening to his stupid ideas is what got him in this mess in the first place. The negging is still happening of course, Tommy being weak and too fragile and useless to be able to fly. A chick like him isn’t safe on his own. Tommy doesn’t leave because something inside him is terrified of abandoning the ‘nest’ even though his real home is in L’Manburg.
After putting his stuff in a pit, Tommy accidentally stands too close. The blast catches him. Not the first time, one caught him a day or two ago and he rounded upon his abuser, cursing him out rather stupidly. But now Tommy drops to the ground, feathers fluffed up and pupils dilated as he freezes on the spot. The only movement he can manage is to reach for the man who hurt him in the first place. His distressed chirping noises are only capable of ceasing once he’s in his abuser’s arms. Or rather, his guardian’s embrace. Afterward, Tommy follows him everywhere, until he’s scolded at the nether portal, forced to wait until he comes back. It’s hours before Tommy realizes what he’s doing. The separation is agonizing.
He’s finally imprinted. Took the brat long enough. But Tommy is finally, finally in the palm of his hand, instincts ensnared in a chokehold.

Dog fighting ring au (Graves' Part)
Phillip Graves - (Handler: Shepherd)
CWs: Graves' racism, hybrid fighting, abuse, drugging.
Characters: Roba, Ghost, Roba's men, Shepherd, Alejandro, Rodolfo
He's bait. A toy to his masters and a doll to his handlers. Scarred from head to toe, kept in no better condition than a sad dog bed in a cold, concrete room. Blond ears and sad tail with missing patches of fur. Ripped out too many times to count, so much so that hair stopped growing there. Or maybe it was the malnutrition, his body's attempt at self preservation. Or the fear he lived in, maybe even the anger.
It hurts. Every movement tore his skin. Every sound scratched his throat. When did he last have water? Food? He didn't know.
The only times he was allowed out was when his handler forced him to taunt a fighting dog. He was bait, just bait.
Nothing better than a toy on a string.
Still, he did his job well. Stalking the fighter infront of him. Black hair, with blond roots peeking through.. swollen parts of his ears. No shirt. Brandings. Scars. Fucked ribs. Bruises.
Huh. Maybe... Maybe some of the fighters understood what being in his position was. Full of pain and no help. Left in the rain or beating sun like a mutt.
The other hybrid didn't attack. He sat there and stared. Eyes narrowed as he watched. Nothing more. So he had to try harder. If he didn't- if he didn't, it might kill him. So be good. Listen. Fight. Taunt.
Graves tried. He stalked, barked, growled and hit.
The other hybrid only bit back when he finally hit a sensitive spot. Finally. Finally, he did his job. Riling up the mutt to get him ready for a fight.
That was all he was good for after all.
Graves quickly learns of the other's handler when he kicks Graves in the stomach and pushes something into his neck. Scary, tattooed, darker skinned. He associated it with pain, no matter how wrong. He didn't know any better.
The man showed each time the hybrid with dyed ears and tail was there. The other always looking at him with soft eyes. He had kicked Graves' ear once before biting him so hard he lost a chunk of his ear. Gentle, when his handler(s) wanted hurt.
That face followed him for weeks. Only ever picking him to prep for his mutt's fights. Graves didn't learn either of their names, he couldn't when he was whimpering in pain. More men joined, jeering and laughing. Not only at him but the other dog. Graves was drugged more than he could count. His handler didn't stop them. He encouraged it. The handlers loved being able to get away with this... Hybrids not human enough to be protected by most laws.
Whether he was unconscious or not for the baiting, he stopped remembering. The drugs affected his system more each time they hit. Withdrawals never happened, he was too much of a toy to be left to rot. A good toy too.
Their faces burned in his head. It didn't take long for him to associate anyone that looked like them with pain, fear and horrible anticipation for hurt.
When he woke to a man gently patting his cheek and laying him on something soft, his instinct was to bite and kick. A man with a beard, recently growing, eyebrows in a constant furrow. He didn't seem deterred when Graves tried to hurt him. Another man held him by his shoulders, clean shaven with kind eyes–Graves was too blind to see it.
These weren't his handlers. Why was the room filled with orders and different voices?? Hybrids left half dead on the ground, while men in so much gear tried to help them. What happened when he was out? Why did he hurt more than usual?
His back burned, stinging when it made contact with the soft thing. A bed, a stretcher.. he didn't know. He just tried to claw his way out of this, it usually worked. But these men were insistent. They kept him there, strapped him down and brought him somewhere else. Somewhere in the dim light of the night, sirens going off around him.
Graves caught one glance at that one fighter–the one with dyed fur–he was in a worse state. Not even conscious as a bearded man tried to wake him too. His chest stung. Was he alive?
He forgot about the men for a moment. It only took a second for him to be given some kind of medication in his veins. It burned, then made him a little floaty. The fear hit full swing again as one of the men said something to him. Something he couldn't understand.
He was back to thrashing in the stretcher, growling as his tail forcefully tucked between his legs.
Then it was black as something hot burned in his arm.
He'd woken up in a hospital. God knows how many days later. It was quiet. Near silent. An arm in a cast and most of his body bandaged up or stitched. He didn't even know he'd broken anything. It all does blend together in that life...
Those men came back and sat at his bedside. They explained what happened. A raid on the ring, many hybrids saved, many in hospitals, some handlers arrested. They said he was lucky not to have been awake and aware. Graves wanted to claw at them again. To hit. But he was held down by cuffs. It wasn't an option.
Trust wasn't an option. He had to trust them. And they tried to prove it.
Colonel Alejandro Vargas and Sargeant Major Rodolfo Parra.
It took upwards of a year for Graves to even think about letting them touch him. He flinched away and growled. He bit more than once. Rodolfo lost a bit of skin on his arm because of it. Graves never said sorry. He shouldn't have stepped in his space.
Still, he associated them with pain and fear. But the more he was brought safe food, bedding, and they literally picked him up out of closets when he had a flashback... It was hard to keep his guard up. They were kind. The other shoe didn't drop. He was warm and safe there.
Graves bit his tongue a lot. Bit back the urge to say things he had heard from that branded hybrid's handler. Mean things. Bad things. He wasn't a bad dog.
This place, a kind home, wasn't what he was used to. He didn't deserve it, he didn't remember if he ever even had that.
Rodolfo and Alejandro were sweet. Their voices felt warm to his wounded ears. No matter how hard he tried, he started to trust them. Those mean words only came back to him as intrusive thoughts or when he was angry. He had lots to unlearn still.
But he wasn't pushed away by them.
On rough nights, he inched closer to Rudy.
And one night he had it particularly rough. Graves settled himself at the end of Rudy's bed, and was never kicked out. No matter the shit he did, he was allowed to stay. Because it was getting better. He was getting better.
Pictures of Graves curled up on Rodolfo's bed have a folder on Alejandro's phone.

Hi! In The Health and Wellbeing of Hybrid Entities, you have the justice league speak in an garbled English. How do you do this, and is there something like a translator for that? I would love to use it for my own stories!
I wish.
It's (deeply abused) Old English. Think "Beowulf". I manually find either the precursor to modern English words here in an etymological dictionary or I look up the closest word or equivalent here in this Modern <=> Old English dictionary. I either try to pick whichever conjugation form is...closest...to what I'm trying to convey, or I give up and use verbs in the infinitive form. There's also a lot of guesswork as to what words were actually present in Old English, what words only exist in Old Norse, and what I have to substitute or change or approximate to get the same meaning across, so every word might have a quick equivalent or a few minutes of cross-referencing depending on its level of antiquity.
There are other options: @tachvintlogic used what I'm 90% sure was IPA in their deeply cool and well-rounded fic from the same prompt, which is phonetic-based and can be transliterated pretty consistently one to one, and a lot of people use zalgo text generator to get some good old fashioned glitches going, but that one's not screen-reader friendly.
Although I guess I don't even know if I'm screen reader friendly either. Can a conventional screen reader read þs and ðs?? They ought to be able to, right?? I'm pretty sure at least ðs are still used in a few languages...
Sorry I don't have a simple system to offer you. There's a reason these chapters take a while, and it's not usually because I'm suffering ten crises simultaneously!

Scavslug Pup design concept I worked on instead of sleeping :D
Tumblr media
They're known as, "The Unwanted"
an abomination freakish hybrid abnormally large paws and their features of both species working in collaboration to create this freak of nature.
It's so hard to draw things ugly I'm sorry- Little guy is just adorable to me I can't-!
Their pearls are disgarded from their Iterator "Parent". Head-canon that they probably said something like, "These pearls are unwanted and serve no purpose. Keep them if you want, you're both a mirror of each other."
The Unwanted has made friends with Slug pups and scavenger pups until their respective colonies learn about their existence and kept chasing them off. There is one colony though that doesn't chase them off.
A large slugcat colony led by a yellow rotund fellow and their pitch-black partner. They let Scavslug hang around as it were. Unsure if Iterator would interfere and ruin this.
Scavslug could work in any timeline of the campaigns. (I dun care if all the slugcat in the campaigns couldn't have canonically met each other due to time gaps, THEY'RE ALL FOUND FAMILY AND BEST FRIENDS!)
AU where Gourmand adopts this little weird hybrid.
Holy shit they're so cool, I really like how the yellow colors pop out from the blues. A nice mix of scavenger and slugcat character traits that blend together very well! I'm not sure if you make the Slugcats fuzzy but if not, I like how the Scavenger's fuzziness translated into covering the entire body! Again, very nice mixture of Scavengers and Slugcats.
That pearl backstory is depressing we should kill their Iterator now. But also holy damn the end part where they join Gourmand's colony and finally feeling like they have a sense of purpose and belonging in the world… augh. Representation of an abuse victim being able to find solace, away from their abuser and towards a new community who will love and cherish them not because they're strong, or smart, or any other character traits that might make them seem valuable, but because they simply exist.
Man now I want to sketch up my own Scavslug concept

Being Fond of You Comes Naturally
Tumblr media
Pairing: Chanyeol/Reader (but not really)
Genre: fluff, angst, hybrid!au
Rating: +18
Warnings: mentions and hints of abuse, sexual abuse, so please don’t read if you’re triggered by it.
Word count: 18,908
Five years went by since hybrids were introduced to the world. Half-human, half-animal beings, who needed to be taken care of. Most people treated them as pets, just as lovingly, but sometimes also just as bad. Yet, you never sparred them a thought until your roommate decided to bring home a tall Labrador Retriever hybrid.
You were stunned. Standing in the living room speechless, bare feet rooted to the fluffy carpet, you stared at your roommate and what she has brought home. Or more like who she brought home. You weren’t sure how you should refer to hybrids. The whole thing was still new to you, even though more than five years passed since they were officially introduced to the society.
Cocking an eyebrow, you glanced questioningly at Seoyun, who fiercely refused to look away. The hybrid next to her seemed to be nervous. He was tall with big doe eyes, and despite his dark hair, his perked ears were covered with golden fur. Strange combination, you thought. He slightly trembled under your inspecting eyes, and grabbed Seoyun’s hand.
“What is this?” you asked slowly.
“He’s a hybrid, not a thing.” She pouted at you, voice lazy and not really caring.
“I can see that. I mean, what is he doing here? What is this situation?”
“I bought him. I was lonely, and he looked so sad at the shelter.”
You hummed. Clicking your tongue loudly, you plopped back down on the couch. You wanted to get back to your work, but your mind wasn’t in the right state at the moment, and you didn’t even know what was the reason for it. Maybe because she forgot to discuss it with you beforehand? Or you were just simply against taking hybrids home as pets? Maybe both. However, you didn’t like this whole idea overall.
Staring at the screen of your laptop with empty eyes, you heard your roommate murmuring softly to the hybrid as she led him to her room. It was right next to yours, and you wondered how can or will the two of them be comfortable in there. Neither room was too big. Well, comfortable for one, but not for two.
From the corner of your eyes, you glanced at the hybrid. He was tall, but at that moment his shoulders slumped forward, as he was trying to shrink to the same size as Seoyun was; and he failed miserably. He must have felt your eyes on him, because the next moment he whipped his head in your direction. His eyes widened, and you didn’t like the scared shine in them. Were you that intimidating? So much for a first impression!
Sighing, you turned back to your laptop, the design for the next spread of the magazine not really registering in your brain.
You were a free-lancer graphic designer. Well, free-lancer on paper, but you were hired for a monthly magazine to design and edit for them. It wasn’t a big job, twenty pages on top, which you usually finished in a week. The only problem was that they didn’t pay you too well, so you also had to take side jobs and even ran a little site where you took commissions for portraits. From the both of them combined you made enough to live well.
It wasn’t like that in the beginning. You barely made any money from your commissions. You had to slowly build up your reputation, so word about your work would spread in the required circles. During the harder days, you worked in a café. You liked in there, but felt relieved when you finally could quit to concentrate on your the work you did with passion.
After maybe an hour, Seoyun came out, the hybrid lingering closely behind her, holding onto her hand.
“What’s your name?” you asked, not looking at them. You didn’t want to scare him off more than you already did. The way he pulled his shoulder up, hunched forward as if he was trying to disappear from your eyes, told you how he didn’t like you just yet.
“Chanyeol,” Seoyun answered for him, her tone slightly colder than before.
You hummed, not wanting to piss her off. You had a nice relationship with each other. She was you roommate in college too, and since you lived together well enough, you decided to find an apartment and move in together after graduating. Your lifestyles were the exact opposite, but maybe that was the reason why it worked so well. You usually stayed at home working, doing the house work, while she was away a lot (not just for work), and did grocery shopping or went to the post office to pay the bills.
Your dynamic worked out, but you wouldn’t call her your friend. Maybe companion would be a better word for what you were to the other. You despised the way she had turned in too many men’s bed, but you even hated more when she told you about it. In great details. She lived her life in a reckless way in you opinion, but as long as she was okay with it, you were too.
And that was exactly your problem with her taking a hybrid home. With her sleeping at other places for more nights than she slept at home, how could she take care of a hybrid? You wanted to tell all of that to her, but decided against it. It would only make bad blood between you two, and you didn’t want to look for a new apartment just because Seoyun grew to hate you for your big mouth.
Still, you couldn’t stand to not make a comment.
“Okay, but I won’t take care of him, if you forget to come home for days.”
Seoyun snorted and laughed sarcastically. You looked at her with a blank expression on your face to make her stop. Then she finally smiled, and said:
“You don’t have to worry. I’ll be the perfect owner of Chanyeol.”
It was your turn to snort. You hoped so for your own good!
Sighing out loud, you stared at the empty counter top. Originally, you planned to make yourself something for dinner, but then you noticed the silence in the apartment. It shouldn’t have been like that. Frowning, you wondered where Seoyun disappeared. She didn’t came home on time, and it wasn’t the first time since Chanyeol lived with you two.
Your roommate went to work in the morning, and haven’t came home since then. Usually she got off from work around three or four in the afternoon, depending on how much work she had to do, but it was already eight and there was no sight of her. You were working in the living room all day, so you were pretty sure that Chanyeol haven’t left Seoyun’s room all day.
You decided to make some pasta and souse, and prepared some for the hybrid too. He wasn’t your responsibility, but you couldn’t let him starve himself to death because of your roommate’s ignorance.
You really wished that she was being honest when she said she won’t be out late and will take care of Chanyeol. That you wouldn’t have to look after him, because she would be responsible from that point on. But that crumbled down only in a week.
Well, it didn’t happen in one day. Not like she went to sleep as a prefect owner of her hybrid, then woke up as a careless person the next morning.
It started with staying out for one or two hours after work, which wasn’t that big of a deal for you. She told you beforehand, so you were aware of it. And she left food for Chanyeol in the fridge too. On the other hand he barely ate when she wasn’t home. You even talked about it with Seoyun, but she shrugged it off, saying that he doesn’t like to eat alone. You didn’t offer to eat with him, when she wasn’t home, and she didn’t ask you to do it.
But after some point, Seoyun stayed out for more and more hours, leaving you and the hiding hybrid alone in the apartment. Last weekend, she didn’t even sleep at home.
The souse sizzled in the pan as you stirred it up, and eventually mixed it with some chicken breast. Then you let it cook while covering it with a lid. Leaving it, you readied the pasta and portioned it out on two plates. When the chicken was ready, you did the same with it too.
Leaving one of the plates on the counter, you put the other one on a tray, accompanied with a pair of chopsticks and a glass of water, then brought it to Seoyun’s room. You knocked softly on the closed door, and when no answer came, you said:
“I made some dinner. I leave it next to the door for you, and will come back and take the plate later when you are finished with it.” You hesitated slightly before adding: “Enjoy your meal!”
You went back to the kitchen, and washed the remaining dishes before sitting down to eat. The whole time you listened to the noises in the apartment, checking if he came out for the food. A few minutes later a soft click of the door could be heard, then some shuffling, and the door closed back.
You caught yourself smiling as you went back to the living room and ate your pasta while checking your e-mails. There were more than enough of them, part of them from previous clients and some new asks for portraits with reference photos and details, even some checking ins with the magazine you worked for. You already finished three pages from next month’s issue, since the journalists and photographers were fast with their job. Only seventeen more to go and you still had the next three weeks to work on it. Most journalists liked to do their parts in the very last minute, meaning that you had to work hard and fast in the last moments too before it had to be sent out for printing.
The pasta went cold long before you finished it, the better half of it wasn’t even warm while you ate it. Your attention was set on your laptop, mind on work, not on basic human needs.
Humming to a forgotten song, you took a break after a few hours, letting the left over souse go hard on the plate, making it more difficult to wash later. You checked on Seoyun’s room – or more like the door of her room –, finding the tray with an empty plate on the floor. You hummed some more; feeling somewhat happy that Chanyeol ate what you cooked, and didn’t just continued with his fasting. Next time, maybe he will even leave the room for a couple of minutes.
You pitied him. You really did. Being locked up in a small room all day long, because the person responsible of you decided to ignore your needs.
Absentmindedly, you typed in the word ‘hybrid’ in the search bar. A lot of links appeared on different topics, and most of them didn’t help you at all. You didn’t even know what you were looking for, just read some articles on the current state of the hybrids in society, but you couldn’t grasp the meaning of them. They were always referring back to previous articles and news, that you didn’t know about. It was a mess, and your head started to hurt soon, so you closed those tabs and went back to work.
It wasn’t your job to do anyway. He was Seoyun’s hybrid to take care of, not yours, and you didn’t have a say in what way she was treating Chanyeol.
Softly approaching Seoyun about your concerns wasn’t a successful way of making her realize your issues. Well, they weren’t your issues really, since you had no relation to Chanyeol, but you were living in the same apartment, and you hated to see him being so lonely and sad whenever your roommate decided that it was a good idea to stay out for the night. And it happened more often than not.
You tried to casually bring up the topic of staying in more, you even stooped so low to ask her to watch a movie with you at home, which she never did. Her answer was a simple no and a weird look you could understand. You never really spent ‘bonding’ time with her, since your relationship was purely transactional, not friendly.
On the other hand, in the past weeks Chanyeol got used to you little by little. He started to come out of Seoyun’s room when she was away. He ate with you when you cooked for him too instead of locking himself away, and lately he even joined you in the living room. He usually watched dramas while you worked on your laptop.
The first time he did that, you were very cautious of your actions and his presence. You refused to move around too much, even when your legs got cramps, you barely flinched because you were scared that he would run back to the bedroom. But to your surprise, he huddled up on the armchair furthest from you, and started to watch the TV. You couldn’t help, but stare at him, and when he noticed, his whole face turned into a burning shade of red and locked his eyes on the screen until Seoyun came back home late night.
This went on for a while: him coming out to watch the news or dramas, and after a while he scooted closer to you.
You usually worked while sitting on the floor, back pressed to the couch, laptop either on your lap or on the table. At first, he sat on the edge of the couch, then the next time he was a little closer, and closer, and the last time he was sitting next to you on the carpet, openly watching what you were doing, but never spoke.
Lunch and dinner was different, but not really. He did the same method; approaching you from afar, until he was sitting next to you at the dining table. And eventually, he even started to speak; thanking for the food, asking for more or if you wanted some water to drink, and he would bring a glass of it for the both of you. Sometimes he even helped you with washing the dishes or cleaning the table after you finished.
You often wondered if this calm, quiet side was truly his personality, or he was still holding himself back from you for whatever reason. Seoyun slipped you that Chanyeol was a Labrador Retriever hybrid, and from what information you could gather, he should be much more energetic and needed to let off a lot of steam.
That’s why you decided to ask him to come with you when the time for grocery shopping came around.
Seoyun asked you to do it this week, since she had a lot of work, and she probably has to stay late at the office. You were okay with it, most people can’t control their work amount if they work for someone else. It also happened from time to time, so it’s not like it was surprising. It was the dynamic of the two of you: you had your assigned housework, but you would switch it up sometimes if it was more convenient for one of you. Being flexible was necessary in any kind of relationship.
You felt strange as you knocked on Seoyun’s door. You rarely did it, since usually she was the one coming for you, so knocking on her door was new to you. As if it wasn’t even your home, but someone else’s.
Chanyeol opened the door slightly, looking at you wide-eyed through the narrow gap. You tried your best not to look intimidating, as you said:
“I’m going to grocery shopping. Do you want to come with me?”
You noticed how his ears perked up at your words – golden fur peaking out from his dark locks of hair. He even tilted his head, as a confused puppy would. A knot formed in your throat, and you felt a sudden urge to pat his head and tell him how cute he was.
“Can we walk?” he asked finally.
“We’ll go by car. I have to buy a lot of stuff and I don’t think we could bring them all home in hand.”
A pout naturally came to his lips, and you really wanted to make it disappear, so your next words slipped out your mouth before you could realize what you were saying:
“But we can go for a walk tomorrow, if you want to.”
That worked like magic. A smile, bright as the sun appeared, and lit up his features. It made you smile too.
“Really? Can we go to the park?”
“Of course. Wherever you want.”
“Thank you, Y/N Noona.”
You hummed in response, and went to your room to change into something that didn’t scream ‘I was working from home’.
“We’ll go in ten minutes!”
Chanyeol was truly amusing, you found that out during shopping. And pretty much like a child. He wanted to see and touch everything that was colorful or interesting even a little bit. Your previously one hour long shopping became a three hour trip around the supermarket, with you pushing the shopping cart and him checking out every single item on the shelves. When he wanted something badly he would stare at you with the softest, shiniest eyes you ever saw on anyone; there was no way you could say no to him.
“Are you planning making me buy the entire store?” You laughed when he dropped the third kind of cereal in the cart.
He suddenly turned to you, a little startled, like a deer caught in headlights. You just smiled, and pushed the cart forward.
You noticed how he often still looked scared of you, so you tried your best to make him comfortable. You were aware to always talk in a soft and slow tone to him, carefully picking each word before letting them fall from your lips. No fast actions or anything that could surprise him in the wrong way. Not really sure if all the hybrids were like this with new people around them (except for their owners), but you wanted to clear your first impression on him. It must have been bad, but you were thankful that he slowly eased up around you, letting his guards down.
“Okay. Most important decision today.” You looked at him seriously as you arrived to the meat section. “Beef or chicken?”
His eyebrows furrowed at the question, eyes roaming between the different kinds of meat. You could almost see his mind running in an incredible pace. After a few minutes passed, Chanyeol looked at you shyly, ears flushing a deep red.
“Can it be both? I want to eat both.” You nodded at him, motioning for him to give you a few of said meats, and he complied happily.
“But which one do you want today?”
“Chicken? Maybe. I’m good with beef too.” You just hummed, getting lost in your thoughts as you strolled towards the cashier with your cart. It was almost full with meat, vegetables, some fruits, juices and snacks – mainly for Chanyeol. He had a really sweet tooth, you noted by looking at all the cereals, chocolates and candies he gathered in the furthest corner from you. There were some instant ramyeon and rice too.
“We’ll figure out something.”
It was late for lunch by the time you arrived home, so you made some instant noodles, which didn’t make Chanyeol the happiest. He looked at the ramyeon as if it betrayed him by not being a full course. He didn’t say anything about it out loud, but disappointment was written all over his features.
“Stop looking at it like that. I’ll make bulgogi stew for dinner.”
You quickly looked away when his eyes lit up once again, and started to eat the noodles fast. He was done in a few minutes. Chanyeol rushed to throw the used cup away and placed his chopstick in the sink, then basically ran back to the table, staring at you in anticipation. Returning the look, you cocked an eyebrow questioningly.
“What?”
“When are you going to start making it?”
A laugh escaped your mouth against your will at his eagerness. Does he love meat that much? He didn’t took your joy in the good way: he pouted and rather rushed to the living room. You wanted to call after him, but didn’t.
You cleaned up the table after finishing your ramyeon too, and went after Chanyeol. He was sitting on the floor, right next to your usual working spot and hugged his knees to his chest, looking like a big, sulking puppy.
“I work for a few hours, then make dinner. You can help if you want to.”
He kept on his posture, but faced you as you sat down next to him, forcing your laptop to life. The screen lit up, and you focused on the edit you left in half yesterday, and frowned a little. You made a big mistake upon editing a picture, which seemed to be impossible to ignore now, but didn’t even notice the day before.
The air stuck in your lungs as Chanyeol stretched his legs, and scooted so close to you that his thigh was pressed to yours. He seemed unfazed by the close proximity, only hummed a soft tune under his breath and turned the TV on, searching for something to watch until dinner time.
You wondered if you should have mercy on him: just ditch work and start making the bulgogi stew immediately, but then abandoned the idea, since you remembered that the deadline was getting closer, and there will be articles coming in fast in the next few days. It wouldn’t do any good for you getting behind your schedule.
Chanyeol’s soft sighing helped you focus. It was a nice background sound along with the voices coming from the TV, and soon you noticed that he was watching you work on your laptop rather than paying attention to the show on the screen. You realized you could get used to it.
The rest of the afternoon went by in a blink of an eye. You fixed yesterday’s editing mistake and worked on today’s to-do’s, and time seemed to fly by fast. After some time, Chanyeol fell asleep next to you, his head bobbing forward from time to time. You nudged his side with your elbow to send him to Seoyun’s room to sleep comfortably, but he leaned on you rather than waking up, his head resting on your shoulder, so you just let it as it was.
One would say you had a soft spot for him in your heart, and they wouldn’t be that far from the truth. You felt responsible for him when Seoyun wasn’t home. And you weren’t even his owner.
As you finished working for the day, you tried to wake Chanyeol up again, but he didn’t even budge, so you started to make dinner alone. He fell down to where you were sitting before, knees hugged to his chest, soft huffs escaping his lips in his sleep. You put a blanket on him before preparing the meal.
He only woke up when the food was almost ready, the smell of it filling the whole apartment. Chanyeol wandered into the kitchen, eyes scanning over everything as he tried to comprehend what was happening. When his eyes rested on the food at last, a pout forming on his lips, eyes bigger than ever. You hid your smile behind your hand as you turned back to the stove.
“You said I can help.”
“You were sleeping too heavily for me to wake you up.” You shrugged. “Isn’t it better to wake up from a nap to food ready to be eaten, then have to make it too?”
“But you said I can help.” He was on full puppy-eyes-mode now, and you couldn’t hide your smile anymore.
Something came over you, so you went to him and patted his head a few times.
“You’ll help next time, okay? Let’s just eat now.”
You found yourself feeling weird when Chanyeol wasn’t around while Seoyun worked, although it rarely happened lately. The tall hybrid came out of their room in the morning and stayed around you ever since you went out for grocery shopping with him. He didn’t just sit next to you while you worked, you two also started to watch the news together, though he hates it with passion, but you also watched some dramas with him which he picked and seemed to love greatly. You watched one or two episodes with him each day, eating food during it, while the both of you waited for Seoyun to find her way home.
It wasn’t that different that day too. You just finished some pad thai, you ordered earlier. Chanyeol taking up the whole couch with his lean body, while you sat in front of him on the carpet, remaining of the late dinner scattered on the coffee table, and the announcer on the screen spoke about the day’s news with a serious expression on their face.
Your ears perked at the word ‘hybrid’ coming from the TV, and you heard Chanyeol’s breathing stop behind you. Eventually, he scooted a little closer to you, feeling his body heat clear.
The announcer spoke about a protest that was held in front of the Municipal Court. People were demanding more precise laws on the hybrids’ keeping, and demanding the bare rights for them that every being deserves.
You felt a lump form in your throat as one of the protesters told the interviewer an insane amount of cases where the owners abused their hybrids and no one did anything about it.
Anger bubbled up in you as you switched the channels, trying to find one where you can watch Chanyeol’s drama instead. Your other hand shot out without really thinking about it, and grabbed the hybrid’s hand that was hanging from the couch. He stiffened at your touch, but soon relaxed again.
“What’s the name of that show we were watching yesterday? I can’t remember.”
“It’s on Channel 6. But there’s still an hour before it starts.”
“Okay. What about the one before it?” You asked while already turning to said channel.
“We haven’t seen the previous episodes yet.”
You smiled. His voice was whiny, you could literally hear that he was pouting. You silently switched to the next one, settling with a variety show that didn’t need any explanation, it could be seen as it was. Chanyeol probably liked it too, since he didn’t complain again, only his soft breathing could be heard.
Carefully, you let go of his hand and pulled your knees to your chest, eyes wandering to the digital clock under the TV, then to your phone. Seoyun promised to be home by dinner, yet she was nowhere. She didn’t even send you a text to let you know she will be late or when will she come back. Maybe she went out for a drink with his colleagues again. Or someone else.
You tried hard not to glance in pity at Chanyeol. He was left behind a lot more than he should have been. He was just too kind for an owner who neglected him like Seoyun did.
You finished the show, even his drama, and Chanyeol slowly but surely fell asleep on the couch. You brought a blanket to put on him. Covering his whole body wouldn’t be an easy task if he wouldn’t sleep with his legs pulled up. You smiled, when you remembered how his body never fit on the couch when he tried to stretch on it while laying down. He seemed to be ridiculously tall sometimes, yet you couldn’t imagine him being any shorter.
Stifling a yawn, you threw out the empty boxes of the pad thai, put the left overs in the fridge and cleaned the kitchen a little, being very aware not make any loud noise that could wake Chanyeol up.
It was past midnight, and you were cleaning the bathroom too, when Seoyun arrived home. You welcomed her in the hall, and offered her some water as you saw her pitifully drunk form. She refused it, and rambled about some man he met during drinking with her colleagues, and how this mysterious man was so polite towards her, even paid for her taxi after they spent an hour at his place. You didn’t need to ask what they were doing there, it was obvious from the messy state of her clothes and hair.
You quietly listened to her, and tried hard not to chime in and broke down her hopes. This kind of story happened a few times to her. A man charmed her in a bar, they spent some happy hours at his place, he told her he will call tomorrow, yet he never even asked for her number in the first place. Seoyun somehow believed them every time, and hoped that finally this one would ‘the one’, but they never were.
“You really don’t want some water? Or something to eat? There’s some pad thai from earlier.”
“No, I don’t want food, I want… Hm… I want to sleep, I think.”
“Good,” you sighed in relief. You would be doomed if she would have wanted to dance or sing like she usually did. “Chanyeol fell asleep on the couch.”
“Oh, I should wake him up. I want to cuddle with him.”
You furrowed your eyebrows at that. Seoyun should just let him sleep peacefully for once. You really wanted to tell her no to bother him in his sleep, but you pursed your lips tightly together and refused to say anything. It wasn’t your place to intertwine, you reminded yourself, which you caught yourself doing a lot lately.
“Do whatever you want, Seoyun, just take a shower first. You stink…” Dramatically putting your hand in front of your nose and mouth, you tried to lighten the mood, and it worked. Seoyun snickered in a high pitched voice, one she only used when she was drunk. She jokingly hit you on the shoulder, almost missing it and stumbling a little, but the smile on her face couldn’t be wiped away.
“It’s not that bad. Oh, would you look at my little Chanyeollie?”
You listened to her cooing upon seeing Chanyeol’s sleeping form on the couch. Her features softened, she even sobered up a little, and you thought, maybe she wasn’t as bad as you thought of her lately.
Shame was something that you rarely felt, but now it washed over you in a big wave, hit you in the head and made you lower your gaze. Still standing in the kitchen, you listened as Chanyeol woke up and happily greeted her owner, then they went to her room, the door closing behind them with a soft thud.
You noted how she never went to wash up.
The next morning Seoyun has already went to work when you woke up. You turned off your alarm, wanting to sleep in for a few more minutes, or for ten, so it was not such a surprise that she wasn’t home by then.
You were getting dressed, as a soft, almost hesitant knock on your door startled you. Surprised, you kicked your feet in the edge of your wardrobe. Hissing and swearing in pain, you called out:
“What is it?”
Chanyeol’s mumbling was too quiet for you to comprehend his words. Sighing, you buckled your belt, then wondered why did you even dressed for going out. Your original plan escaped your mind.
Another knock echoed through your room, tearing you out from your thoughts. Opening the door, Chanyeol towered over you, but his troubled expression made you feel like you were the taller one and he’s just a little kid. His lips even quivered as he opened them to say something.
“Can we go for a walk? Seoyun noona said I’m not allowed to go out alone.” His voice got smaller and smaller as he spoke, you could barely hear his last words. Yet still, your eyebrows furrowed. Something felt off with him, but you couldn’t wrap your fingers around what it was. He looked the usual. Maybe there was faint dark circles under his eyes, but it could be the aftereffect of Seoyun waking him up in the middle of the night.
“Of course. Let’s go!”
As he kept looking at you with a troubled expression, you wondered what was really up. And why did you originally dressed for going out. You gave up on solving any of those mysteries, and just asked him.
“Is there something else?”
“Um, no… I mean, yes. Can we get hot chocolate?” You smiled at his innocence. He must have took it in the wrong way, since he looked away quickly, avoiding eye contact very obviously.
“Yeah, but where did that come from?”
You went back to grab a sweater and your wallet. Chanyeol awkwardly lingered in the doorway.
“I saw on a drama that people like to drink hot chocolate around winter. And there were commercials for it lately, so I want to try it.”
“Right, dramas.”
The corner of his lips slowly lifted up, forming a shy smile. You motioned for him to move and get ready, then you went out.
You quickly searched for a coffee shop near your apartment on your phone and decided on route that you would walk by. Even asked Chanyeol how much has he seen of the city, so maybe you could show him some places he never heard of.
To your surprise, he barely saw anything of it. In a hushed voice, he told you that his first owner never let him out of their house, he could only run free in the garden, and they never let him meet with other hybrids. In the end, they put him in a shelter. You couldn’t say anything to him at the moment. The words in your mind felt overused and cliché, so instead you just patted his shoulder and told him that things will be okay now.
He shot you an unsure smile, then nodded along. His next words surprised you even more though:
“I think I’m happy now.”
Patting his shoulders again, it was your turn to smile, reassuringly.
“That’s good! I’m glad about that,” you said. “There’s a river nearby. We can go there after getting hot chocolates. It has a really nice scenery.”
“Really?”
“Of course.”
And so you did. Tasting hot chocolate for the first time, he looked like a child on Christmas Eve, eagerly opening their presents and finally getting the toys of their dreams. And his eyes sparkled like two stars in the night sky when you arrived to the river.
There was a park near it, a path for runners following the line of the river. You always thought, it must be nice to go on runs while listening to the splashes of water so close to you, but you weren’t the runner type.
Winter coming, the green has faded away from the plants, but the gloomy gray sky made the water look even prettier like that. Slowly, nature was dying to give way to the cold months, which would be followed with its rebirth. You couldn’t wait for spring to come. The even better thing was that if you walked down the road for a few more minutes, you would meet with cherry trees. They looked mesmerizing when they bloomed.
“It would be nice to come here during the first snow,” he mumbled.
When you turned to him, Chanyeol’s eyes were on the river, sometimes glancing up at the sky, as if he was expecting it to start to snow at that moment. A tiny smile played on his lips. As he sighed, white puffs of air escaped his mouth, and you thought maybe it was time to go back to the apartment.
“Saw it on dramas too, huh?”
“You saw it too, noona?”
“Maybe. Romantic dramas tend to mention it, you know. They say if you kiss your loved one under the first snow of the winter, you will stay together forever.”
“Really? Is it true?”
“I don’t know.”
You didn’t want to wipe the soft smile off his face by saying it was just an urban legend that’s useful for drama writers. He doesn’t have to know that kissing under the first snow not always meant forever. At least not for you.
You really didn’t know what you should have believed. You saw the bruise on Chanyeol’s wrist clearly and an another one higher up on his arm, but he quickly tugged his sleeves down when he noticed you staring at it. They looked like ugly purple and blue roses that bloomed on his skin.
“What happened?” you asked him cautiously.
Muting the drama he was watching, when he refused to look at you and answer, you turned to him. Chanyeol’s eyes were trained on the screen, the main characters only mouthing words, he couldn’t make out. The hybrid’s eyebrows furrowed into a serious and stubborn line, one, which didn’t suit him at all. A pained look on him wasn’t something you wanted to witness at all. It was simply strange.
He cleared his throat before speaking.
“Well, the King is mad at his son for disobeying him, but it’s understandable because he just wanted to…”
“Not in the drama, Chanyeol.” He flinched at your low tone, scurrying a little further from you on the couch. You felt a slight pang in your chest, and continued a little softer. “Your wrist. What happened to it?”
“Nothing.”
“Did someone hurt you?”
“No. I was just…” The words died on his lips, and refused to say anything more, no matter how you twisted your questions around.
A bad feeling settled in the pit of your stomach.
Chanyeol was barely in contact with anyone beside you and Seoyun. And you never grabbed his arm or wrist with so much strength to bruise him. Hell, you barely ever touched him!
And it left you with only one option you could think about, but that was unbelievable for you. Seoyun couldn’t. She would never, right? She would never raise hand on him. Right?
“Can I take a look at it?” You asked him softly, voice above a whisper.
He stared at you for long moments before scooting closer on the couch, the old furniture creaking under his weight. He slowly held his arm out for you, and you took his hand, being cautious not to grab his wrist on instinct. Fingers gently brushing together with his, you stroked them in a calming manner. Then with your free hand you pushed his sleeve up, revealing the ugly roses on his skin again.
Chanyeol sharply inhaled as you brushed your fingers on the bruise, only letting it go when he hissed a little in pain.
Without a word, you went to your room, looking for a cream you remembered to be in there somewhere and to be good for bruises. You just hoped it didn’t expire yet, since it was a long time ago you bought it.
You found it and was still good, so you went ahead and applied it on Chanyeol’s arm. He hissed again when the cold cream touched his skin and you ignored it, continuing your motions, but with gentler strokes.
Putting the volume back up on the TV, you instructed him to wait until his skin fully absorbed the cream, but the rattling of the lock from the front door startled both of you.
In a hurried manner, Chanyeol pulled down the sleeve of his sweater, then basically ran into the bedroom, quickly closing it behind himself.
You sighed in defeat. Something was very, very wrong, and it was too obvious for you to ignore. Biting down on your lower lip, you argued with yourself whether you should bring it up to Seoyun or not. Was it your place to talk to her about something like that? You weren’t anyone to Chanyeol, you just lived with them, but… What an awful human being you should have been to shut your eyes when the evidence of abuse was right in front of you.
You closed your eyes. The drama still went on, and for once you wished for Seoyun to come home later, so Chanyeol could have finished the episode in peace as he always did. You wished for those ugly roses to never bloom on his skin, so you wouldn’t have to do what you will as soon as your roommate comes into the living room.
Sailors must have known something when they said it’s always the calmest before the storm. Your mind went empty and calm, but it was filled with cold anger at the same time. You wanted to yell your questions to Seoyun about those bruises, and hoped that she would be either honest with you or could lie so well that you would believe her. Hell, you wanted to believe that it wasn’t her who hurt Chanyeol, but the subtle fear in his eyes told you otherwise.
Seoyun was sober for once, and you were thankful for it. You didn’t know how would you handle her if she was drunk at that moment. Probably not so well.
Your feelings must have been clear on your face, because your roommate stopped in her track when she looked at you, then quickly averted her gaze, checking the room for Chanyeol’s presence. Even after making sure he wasn’t there, she refused to look at you.
“I think we should talk, Seoyun.”
“Ah, is it time for paying the rent already?” Her light tone made you fist your hand on the blanket that was previously wrapped around Chanyeol. It also made you insecure about what you saw and thought. Would she talking like that If she hurt him? “Or are we running low on groceries?”
“No. Nothing like that. I just saw a couple of bruises on Chanyeol. It concerns me.”
“It shouldn’t. Really.” “Seoyun, those aren’t the kind you get when you hurt yourself on accident. So what happened?”
“It’s none of your business, but he was bad.”
Once again, you closed your eyes and bit down on your tongue before something slipped out of your mouth. Mostly nasty words crowded in your mind, but after taking a deep breath, you pushed them aside. Reminding yourself that it was not your job or place to dig into someone’s life. Even if it was your roommate. You were always on good terms with her, so why was she getting you off with every word she said today?
“He was bad,” you repeated finally, in a low tone. She nodded fast, still standing in the middle of the living room as if he froze to that place.
“Yes. He needed to be disciplined, so as his owner, I did.”
“What do you mean by disciplined?” you asked, stunned by her words. Though, it couldn’t be any more obvious, you still asked. “And bad? What has he done?”
“He didn’t obey when I told him to do some things. And you know what I meant. I punished him, so he can learn how to behave next time.”
You felt sick in your stomach, a lump already forming in your throat. Seoyun’s expression hardened, stare grew colder and heavier as she added:
“Still. This is none of your business. I’m the owner of Chanyeol, not you, so don’t act like you know anything about keeping a hybrid. You don’t even want one in the first place.”
Gritting your teeth, you nodded, because she was right with everything she said. But that didn’t mean you won’t protect Chanyeol from her if needed or that you won’t seek any kind of help for him if things get out of hand. You will have to make sure about all of your rights in this situation first, then you can act.
You hummed and you plopped back down on the couch, eyes returning to the drama. You were long behind the plot, missing out a bunch of scenes, but your mind was still wrapper around the argument just had with your roommate.
From the corner of your eyes, you saw her stand there frozen for a hew more minutes, and when you refused to look at her again, she went to her room. You immediately lowered the volume down, fearing to hear noises of her hurting Chanyeol again, but there was mostly silence, mixed up with a couple of low murmurs, nothing bad or serious.
You turned the TV down, washed up before going to bed, but still couldn’t fall asleep. The thought of Chanyeol being hurt by your roommate kept you up for hours, and the next thing you noticed was the sunlight peeking through your window and the noises of Seoyun getting ready to work. Your ears were trained for listening to anything suspicious, but the only sounds were her getting a shower then leaving the apartment after talking to the hybrid about something you couldn’t make out.
“I’m not hungry, Noona!” Chanyeol’s muffled voice could be heard well in the quiet apartment, even through the locked bedroom door. You knocked on it previously to let him know you made breakfast for the both of you.
“Then how about a walk? We could go to the market or the park.”
“No. I just want to sleep.”
Defeated, you sighed. This wasn’t how you planned the day to go by. You wanted to eat with him and take him somewhere nice before working, then watch his dramas in the evening as you usually did, but now he refused to come out of the bedroom.
You knew he must have been hungry by now. He always ate a lot of anything you gave him, and even snacked afterwards, and it has been more than ten hours since the last meal he had, and he says he is not hungry. The red flags instantly appeared in your head, making your eyebrows furrow in worry.
Most of last night instead of sleeping you spent your time working in your room, while listening to every noise in the apartment, in hopes of catching any evidence against Seoyun’s nasty behavior. You also tried to seek some useful information online, but not really much was said on forums about laws regarding abusing hybrids.
“I’ll leave some food for you in the fridge,” you said after a while. When no answer came, you went to the living room to work away your frustration.
Your appetite disappeared with Chanyeol’s rejection, so you simply put the food away. You wanted to go out to clean you mint with the cold winter air, but didn’t have the heart to leave him completely alone. Even though he didn’t want to come and spend time or eat with you, it was a whole another story to be the only person in the apartment. If he changed his mind, he would have no one to turn to with Seoyun being at work.
Still, you sent a message to your roommate, asking her a favor, which you rarely did.
Y/N: Hey, would it possible for you to get home earlier today? [8:37]
Y/N: I have somewhere to be at 3, and can’t take Chanyeol with me there. [8:38]
Seoyun: Okay, I talk to my boss, but he’ll probably let me off. We did a lot of overtime, so he has to. [9:03]
Y/N: Thanks! [9:04]
Seoyun: Welcome. I’ll be home around 2. [9:10]
Your heart felt a little heavier and easier at the same time. Ever since you saw those bruises last night on Chanyeol’s skin, you feared to leave him fully alone with Seoyun, and now you will do exactly that, willingly even. And you felt relieved, because it was for the better.
Since you couldn’t find anything useful online, you decided to go down the old roads, and visit some hybrid shelters. Their workers must know what to do in situations like this.
Were you taking it too seriously? Maybe. People discipline their dogs too when they behave bad. But Chanyeol wasn’t just a dog. He was a hybrid with human feelings.
Lunch time came sooner than you expected. Working and editing made hours fly by fast, and you cooked something quick and easy that was also filling too. A pasta with some creamy chicken did wonders. You took your sweet time making it, despite it being an easy meal to do. Cooking took your mind off of your problems. Instead, you made a list in your head about what you still had left from work today and planned your schedule for the rest of your day.
Going to the nearby hybrid shelter you found online. Making sure you ask everything you wanted from someone working there. If failing, then going to another shelter. Continue until you get your answers. After getting home, fixing yesterday’s editing mistakes on page eight and fifteen.
So your plan wasn’t that difficult at all.
When the food was ready, you put two servings on plates and started from step one with Chanyeol. You put his meal on a tray and brought it to Seoyun’s roo.
He didn’t answer to your knocking, and definitely didn’t open the door for you. You sighed, putting the tray in front of the door.
“Chanyeol? I made lunch, it will be at the door, please, eat it up.” You waited for him to reply, but his voice never came. You only heard the rustling of fabrics for a few seconds, then there was silence once again. “Also, I have to go out, so Seoyun will be home in an hour.”
Noises of his movements could be heard again, and you sighed in relief as the door creaked open for some inches. You even smiled a little when Chanyeol’s mop of hair and fluffy ears peeked out through it. He looked down at you with wide eyes, gaze full of questions. Then, in a small voice, he asked:
“Can’t I just go with you?”
Instantly, your smile turned bitter, giving him an apologetic look and the shook of your head.
“I’m sorry, Chanyeol, I can’t take you there.”
Averting eye contact, he looked down at his feet. He huffed, a scowl coming to his features.
“But I’d be good. I could just wait outside.”
You felt bad for him, and scowled yourself too. He was so persistent about going with you, but you couldn’t just bring him with you to the shelters. At worst, he would misunderstand it, and you certainly didn’t want him to hear you talking about legal options for abused hybrids. You were pretty sure, he would shut off in front of you for a good while, if he heard that conversation. No, you had to go alone, and talk with an expert with a clear mind. Chanyeol would distract you, since you would had to censor your words with him in the room. And you couldn’t just leave him waiting for you in front of a hybrid shelter. What the hell would he think about you after that? Your relationship took a turn for the better lately, ruining it wasn’t something you wanted or needed.
Slowly, you reached out, ruffling his hair a little. He leaned into your touch, so you kept petting him, stroking his golden-furred ears with care.
“You really can’t come along now, Chanyeol.” His face scrunched up at your words. A sudden emptiness got cozy in you chest when he stepped back and shut the door right in your face. Your hand fell back next to your body, the feel of his fur and hair still tingling your skin.
Chanyeol didn’t come out to eat until Seoyun arrived home sharp at two. You changed a few words with her, mainly thanking her for coming home early for you, but that was all. She acted a little distant, but still as if the conversation from last night never happened. You were stiff around her too, tiptoeing around with your words and actions with knowing where you were planning to go.
You updated her on Chanyeol not eating and about the food for her being in the fridge. She didn’t have to know that you didn’t eat your lunch either, because of the unsettling feeling in the pit of your stomach. Handling secrets and nervousness wasn’t your thing.
Inhaling the cold, but clean winter air you finally noticed your head throbbing with pain, so you took an altered route to the first shelter with bumping into a pharmacy too for some painkillers.
Rubbing your hands together, you blew air on them for warmth, but it wasn’t much help. Luckily, you finally arrived to your destination.
EXO Shelter wasn’t fancy or too outstanding from the outside or the inside. A simple gray building with tinted windows and only the opening hours plastered on the door. A bell tinged when you entered, and the light gray theme continued on the inside too, accompanied with some white furniture.
At the counter a red haired man gave you a smile, and with warm, but curious eyes followed your moves.
“Hello! How can I help you?”
You hesitantly walked up to him, not so sure what you were supposed to do anymore. Was it really the good thing to do? Or your place to do it?
The man waved a hand in front of your face, and you shook your head to get unnecessary questions out of your mind. His name tag said he was Baekhyun, and his smile was a little hesitant now.
“Sorry. I don’t know if I came to the right place,” you said.
“Well, if you are looking for adopting a hybrid or need some advice with taking care of them, then I assume you are right where you need to be.”
“I’m looking for more of help with something a little more… sensitive.” “Ah!” He winked at you and nodded along knowingly, which only confused you. “Is your hybrid experiencing their first heat?”
“Heat? No, no, no. It’s not like that. And not about my hybrid.” You look around the small welcoming area and the door. People could walk in any moment. “I’m looking for some legal advice.” “About what?”
“Abuse.”
The pleasant smile fell from his face. Nose scrunching up, he nodded to himself. With a finger held up in the air, he motioned for you to wait, and he reached for the phone on the counter. His fingers quickly put a number in, then in a few seconds he already got hold of who he called.
“Hey! I have a customer with me, I’m sending her in. Hm, no, I don’t know much, but you’ll need Jongdae too, probably. She said abuse and not hers. Okay! Thanks, Junmyeon!” With that, he turned back to you. His smile reappeared, although a little strained. “The boss is ready to see you. You can meet our legal advisor too, but I have to warn you: don’t get your hopes too high up!”
You wanted to ask him what he meant by that, but he already slipped out from behind the counter and went ahead to a closed door at a further corner of the room. He was fast on his feet, leading you through a few corridors and doors, not once crossing the real shelter area, where the hybrids were. You mostly saw storage and staff’s room, before you arrived to Baekhyun’s boss’ office.
Junmyeon was waiting for you with his door opened, standing up from his chair as soon as you stepped in. Another man, probably the mentioned legal advisor, Jongdae was there with him, both of them giving you rather sad smiles. It only racked your nerves up more.
Baekhyun left you alone after a quick introduction.
Junmyeon offered you a seat opposite from himself. Jongdae stood next to him, resting his hand on the back of his boss’ chair.
“Baekhyun mentioned you are here for advise with hybrids’ abuse. And they are not yours?”
“Ah, yes. My roommate took home a hybrid a few months ago. It wasn’t ideal in the first place… I mean, she stays out a lot because of her job and… Anyways, last night I noticed some bruises on her hybrid’s wrist and arm. They were pretty nasty, and when I mentioned my concerns to my roommate she only said that Chanyeol was bad so she punished him.”
Your voice was weak, and the words left a sour taste in your mouth. Pictures of Chanyeol’s sad eyes came to your mind as he asked you to let him come along. Combined with the thought of him being in pain, it made your heart twist in a painful way.
“What is his breed?”
“Chanyeol is a Labrador Retriever hybrid.”
“From what I understand, mainly you are the one spending time with him. Is that correct?”
“Yes. I work from home, so yes.”
“Good. Have you noticed anything unusual about his behavior beforehand? Any signs that it wasn’t the first time it happened?”
“I’m not sure. He was always a little shy with me. I’m not familiar with hybrids, so I don’t know how he should naturally act, but he always seemed to be afraid to ask to ask for anything from me, if that makes sense.”
Junmyeon shifted in his seat, eyebrows furrowed, lost in his thoughts, a not so promising look in his eyes. And his next words confirmed it too.
“Look, it might sound harsh, but I need to be blunt with you. There’s not much we or you can do yet. Jongdae?”
The other man cleared his throat before speaking up.
“Yeah. The laws are really behind at this moment. I don’t know if you follow the news, but lately there seems to be a shift for the better. There are plenty of protest for hybrids’ rights, including abuse too.”
You leaned back in your seat, feeling defeated. This wasn’t the answer you were looking for. In your mind pictures of the late night news flashed, remembering all those strangers shouting their demands for hybrids to anyone who cared to listen.
Jongdae must have read the hopelessness from your face, as he continued in a softer tone.
“Right now, your only option would be to prosecute your roommate for hybrid abuse and hope for the best. The most favorable option would be if you had firm evidence on what she did to her hybrid, or have him make a statement, and even then it wouldn’t be sure if you could get him out of that situation.”
“Remember that case from last September?” Junmyeon asked suddenly, looking up at his colleague, then back at you. “It was similar to yours, only it was between siblings. The younger one took home a cat hybrid, and after some time the older noticed that something was wrong. The owner physically and sexually abused the hybrid. The older sibling had video evidence of it from different times, so it was a pretty solid evidence. Took it to court, and in the end the abuser got out free and without any punishment. They didn’t even took the hybrid away. A few weeks forward, the hybrid passed away because of ‘unforeseen things’.”
“But how?”
“The owner had a good lawyer.”
“The devil’s advocate, if you ask me.”
“Yeah, that guy only held back for any hybrid case in court. He and the owner basically made up lame excuses for each piece of video evidence. ‘I did this because my hybrid refused to learn to use the toilet’, ‘It happened because they peed on the carpet’, and the forever classic: ‘I punished them because they were bad’. And it wasn’t dismissed in court. What a shameful punch in the face for hybrids rights!”
“So you are telling me that I should sit back and watch my roommate destroy Chanyeol because the law don’t do shit?”
You started to loose your calm. Listening to all these disgusting details about the poor hybrid’s life, you wanted nothing more than spare Chanyeol all that pain. He won’t end up like that, you promised yourself.
“Not at all. But right now, you have nothing to secure your success if you would report your roommate. You should watch and maybe step in if you catch her in action. It would be even better if you could ask for a neighbor to come over when it happens. It means you have a witness on your side, which can’t be that easily dismissed in your case.”
“Also,” Junmyeon chimed in. “You should think hard and long about the future of that hybrid before doing anything rashly. Would you take him in? Could you provide him a safe place, so he could be far from your roommate? Or you would put him in a shelter? Would you ask us to take him in? There’s a lot you have to make clear for yourself before you act. You can’t just get him out of a situation then leave him without any option for his future. I mean, yes, hybrids are partly humans, but the animal part of theirs make them very depending on humans.”
Drumming your fingers on your thigh, you could only keep nodding in response. Your head got full of questions and answers, things that needed to be done, preferably right now, all at once.
Both man gave you expecting looks, but you simply nodded one last time and thanked them for their time and help, promising you will be back after thinking through everything.
Time around Christmas was never your favorite. Before the holidays, you had to rush with editing for the magazine, but afterward it seemed time has stopped, everything was so slow. Anyway, you were happy to get out from your comfort zone and go home to your parents for the holidays, although more than a little anxious for leaving Chanyeol alone.
Seoyun went home for Christmas too, taking Chanyeol with her, so it made you a little relieved. You like to believe that she wouldn’t hurt him while there was a possibility of her parents figuring out what she did.
Until then, you haven’t really talked to Seoyun. All of your conversations were mainly put together of formalities, and Chanyeol shut you off too. He stayed in the bedroom, locked away, only coming out when you told him the meal was ready to be eaten. You tried to talk to him, explaining him what you were planning to do, but he never listened, rather scurried back in the safety of the bedroom before you could tell him anything. So you just sighed, and kept preparing everything for the time when things would go south. And you expected it to happen. Just not right after Christmas.
Happy about finally getting home, you had plans about tucking yourself in your bed and sleeping away any thought of the cold; you fiddled with the lock a little. Your fingers were shaking, since you never wore gloves and the winter air bit into your skin harshly. You felt a weird sense of pride, since you had done so much during the holidays. You checked every point off of your list of things-needed-to-be-done, as leasing a new apartment, getting in touch with a moving company and in all secrecy, you talked with one of your neighbors, explaining them the situation in vague words and asked them to come over if you called them.
You were on a good way to make sure everything was ready if Seoyun acts dangerously towards Chanyeol and you had to give him a new life.
After leaving EXO Shelter, there was only one thing you were sure about: you are not going to let Chanyeol get into there. You will give him a new home if he agrees and wants to live with you.
Shaking off your coat and boots after going in, you dropped your bags down, deciding to put it in your room later. First you needed a mug of hot tea. This cold weather was seriously messing with you, and it haven’t even snowed yet. Maybe soon it will happen, since the sky seemed to be nearly white with all the clouds melting into each other and thermometer never showed numbers above zero lately.
The apartment was quiet. Seoyun sat on the ouch, watching some rerun of a drama in the living room.
“Hey! Happy New Year!” You greeted her with a little bow of your head and she returned it, ripping her eyes off of the screen for a few seconds. You looked around, then casually asked: “Chanyeol?”
She waved your question off, so you assumed he was still moody and locked up in the bedroom. You didn’t want to think about any other options. You noted that you should check on him when Seoyun goes to showering, making sure she didn’t hurt him again.
Shrugging, you went to finally make some tea while listening to the sounds coming from the drama. It must have been a historical one, assuming from all the old kind of talking and mentions of kings and thrones. Otherwise, the apartment was eerily quiet.
It all downed on you when you reached for your mug; an unsettling feeling creeping its way into your body. Something was missing from the shelf. Chanyeol’s mug wasn’t there. He refused to drink hot beverages from anything else than that stupid blue mug with a smiling sun on it. It was childish from him, but that’s just who he was. You tiptoed a little, to see if it was deeper in the cupboard, but you couldn’t see any signs of it, and you just got a really bad feeling. Something dark and bad settled in your stomach, making your guts clench. All that quietness seemed to be more of a ‘calm before the storm’ now.
You rushed back to the living room, forgetting about the cold and the tea.
“What happened to Chanyeol’s mug?” For a moment you felt stupid for asking that, but the bad feeling in you heightened when Seoyun turned her head to you with a nonchalant look.
“I threw it out.”
“Why?”
Her hesitancy made your heart drop, forgetting to breath for a moment. Quick on your feet, you stormed to her bedroom, almost ripping the door open. And you froze right there.
Chanyeol wasn’t in there. All of his stuff were gone. Not even a sign he even lived there, everything wiped out of existence. Seoyun lingered behind you, face a little more careful now, eyeing you for reaction.
“Where is he?” You asked through gritted teeth, seeing red. She noticed your anger too, since she took a step back. It made you aware how you must have looked and acted. Anger got the best out of you. Forcing yourself to calm down a little, you looked back at her expectantly.
“I took him back to a shelter.”
“Why?”
“We weren’t matching, really. He was stubborn, never listening to what I told him to do. Honestly, he even listened to you better than he did to me.”
“So you hit him at first. And now you put him into a shelter because you were a bad owner to him.”
Your words stunned her into silence. You watched her constantly opening and closing her mouth, unable to mutter a response. For a second, you wondered if you hurt her feelings, then you remembered Chanyeol. The bruises on his wrist and arm. The begging look in his eyes as he asked you to let him come with you to whatever place you were going. The curious glances he stole at you while you were working. His little, hopeful smile when you walked to the river and talked about the first snow of the season.
It was too late for Seoyun to be the hurt one in this scenario. She caused irreversible damages to Chanyeol, the innocent hybrid, who she was supposed to take care of. And in that moment you felt relieved that you decided to plan everything out for the time when shit hits the fan.
“Which shelter did you take him to?” Your voice was strong and unwavering, almost demanding. She shivered upon hearing it, but her hands balled into fists.
“I don’t remember its name. It’s the closest to us, near that fancy coffee shop.” In comparison, she whispered, eyes not really meeting yours anymore. You nodded, but she didn’t see it.
“I’ll be moving out in the next week. I will take care of paperwork, talk to the landlord, and pay my share for this month’s rent, bills, everything, but that’s it. You can start looking for a new roommate, or whatever you want, just leave me out of it.”
You walked out of her room, planning to go and find Chanyeol, having a hunch feeling which shelter he could be and hoping you were right, as Seoyun called after you.
“Y/N.” She sighed when you didn’t turn back to her. “I’m sorry.”
“I don’t care. I’m not the one you are owning an apology to.” Thinking a little, you turned to look back at her with a hard, pointed look in your eyes. “On the other hand, if you ever try to go near him, you’ll regret it.”
Eyebrows furrowed, you saw that she wanted to question you, but didn’t do it and you were thankful for it. You may have looked all cool and collected to her, but your hands were slightly shaking and your heart was beating so erratically as if it was planning on suicide.
You put your boots and coat back on, biting down on your tongue hard. Your bag waited for you at the front door, right where you put it down, but laundry had to wait some more.
Walking in a fast pace down the streets, you once again looked up hybrid shelters online, searching fo the closest to your apartment. And your intuition was right: EXO Shelter was the closest one, so you really hoped to find Chanyeol there.
You set yourself a quick walking pace. Worry seeped into your thoughts, mixing with your anger towards Seoyun. You wanted to curse at her and tell her off for hours and hours, but you also wished to fin Chanyeol immediately. Since the two couldn’t be done at the same time, obviously, the latter became the priority.
You payed no mind to the people passing by you who looked at your running form questioningly, or even weirdly, you only thought about reaching the shelter fast and begging to an unknown deity to let Chanyeol be there.
And maybe someone up there listened to your silent pleas.
Your abrupt arrival to EXO Shelter must have been a sight to see. There was hours of traveling from home and an argument behind your back, your insides bubbling with worry, anger and hope, all at once.
Baekhyun was behind the counter, watching you pant in the welcoming area. Bending in half as you tried to catch your breath, he tilted his head to the side, then asked:
“Hey, you came back! You okay? ‘Cause you don’t really look okay.”
“Hi! Is Chanyeol here?” You chocked out finally, and went to him.
“Who?”
“A tall dog hybrid. He was put in here after Christmas?”
He seemed to be thinking for a good few seconds, each felt like a minute, and your hopes started to sink to find the lanky puppy here. Damn it, Seoyun, which shelter did you bring him to?
“Wait, you mean the sulky one?” Seeing your arched brow, he explained himself: “Sorry, after the holidays there’s always a ton of hybrids brought in. People are just so irresponsible. They get them for their kids, then kick them out when they realize they should take care of them. Idiots, if you ask me.”
“So, Chanyeol?”
“Ah, Junmyeon told me about you, and yes, he is here. But I should take you to the boss first, I think.”
You bent forward again, still being breathless, but for other reasons than being tired from running so much. A huge weight has been lifted off your shoulders, and the invisible hand that had a strong grip on your heart, finally released it.
Baekhyun lead you down the same way. You knew from there you couldn’t see any of the hybrids, but you kept looking around, hoping to catch a glimpse of Chanyeol. The man must have noticed your fidgety peeking actions as he chuckled to himself, then knocked on his boss’ door. After a few seconds, you were invited in.
Your appearance got more reaction out of Junmyeon than it did from Baekhyun. The man behind the desk looked at you with widened eyes, then ever so slowly, a careful smile found its way to his lips.
“I’m happy to see you again.” You bowed at him, feeling nervous. You shifted from one leg to the other. “Thank you, Baek, I’ll handle it from here.”
The red haired man nodded. He gave you a nod too before he went back to his job, and closed the door behind himself.
Despite the smile, the look in his eyes were tired and alerted. You wanted him to tell you everything and take you to Chanyeol immediately, but his gaze held you back from asking. Fidgeting with your fingers, you simply sat down on the offered chair.
Junmyeon took his sweet time before he started to talk.
“I’m glad you came.” Mustering up your courage to protest, he dismissed it with waving. “It will probably seem unnecessary to you, but we have to go through some formalities. Is that okay with you?”
“Of course.”
“I assume you are here for Chanyeol.” You nodded, he continued. “Good. Do you have anything to do with his injuries?”
The air was knocked out of your lungs. You both knew you didn’t. He even said it was just formalities. But the way he phrased it meant Chanyeol was hurt again.
Your hand balled into fists, and you had to internally count to ten – or maybe sixty –, to be able relaxing. Letting out a long breath, you covered your face with your hand, thumb and index-finger massaging your temples. Whatever you tried, you couldn’t ready yourself for anything that were coming after that.
“So? Do you?” Junymeon’s voice tore you out of your thoughts.
“No. Last time I saw him was before Christmas.”
“That’s good. Are there any witnesses to confirm that?”
“I was with my parents the whole time. I wasn’t even in town, only came home this morning.”
His smile widened into a relieved one; one which you couldn’t read well. You had pieces of the puzzle, but your hands were trembling so bad you couldn’t put them together, to get the full picture. You figured that Chanyeol was injured again, and apparently they suspected you, too? Or maybe they just…
“Okay. I had to make sure you weren’t involved in what happened. And for Chanyeol’s sake, I hope you decided what you would do since last time we met.”
“Can you tell what happened finally? How’s Chanyeol? Can I see him now?”
“In a few minutes, you can. First, tell me your decision.”
The words stuck on your tongue, but you sputtered them out. You wanted this. Chanyeol needed and deserved this. A peaceful home together.
“I’m going to adopt him.”
“When?”
“Right now, if it’s possible. But I need a week before I can take him home.”
He cocked an eyebrow. The grip on your heart was back, but not so harshly.
“Your roommate?”
“I’m moving out. I won’t be taking him near that place ever again.”
Junmyeon must have been satisfied with your answers, since he abruptly stood up, motioning for you to do the same. You followed him as he walked out of the office, leading the way. With a few quick steps you fell in pace with him.
“That woman brought Chanyeol here, telling us how he was not up to her expectation. At first glance, he looked okay, but sad and drained out of life. He refused to eat, only asked for ‘Y/N Noona’. We noticed his injuries only on the second day.”
The lump in your throat grew as his words got heavier. Your heart beat to a fast rhythm, you hated it. You felt sick in your stomach.
With a dry mouth, you asked:
“How is he now?”
“He lets us tend to his bruises so they are healing fine, luckily. Barely eats, not even the home-cooked meals. Refuses to talk, and… he often asked us to find you in the beginning, but two days ago he stopped talking completely.”
Junmyeon’s words hung over you heavily, like a sword ready to kill you if you dare to make a mistake. And you didn’t plan making any. You wanted to comfort Chanyeol and make sure he is willing to come home with you.
“Let me talk to him alone. Please.”
“Okay. But I will be on the other side of the door, listening and step in if you upset him.”
Arguing wouldn’t do you a favor, so you nodded instead. After going through one more door, you arrived to the… well, you didn’t know what to call them. It was a plain hallway with a lot of glass doors, each one of them having a hybrid behind them.
Junmyeon led you to the last one, pointing at the glass.
“He’s in there.”
You followed the direction of his finger, seeing a little yellow room, with a brown bed. A curled up figure laid on it, golden ears peeking out of brown hair. His face was hidden from you, and he wore gray clothes: sweatpants and a hoodie. The pants were too short for him, his ankles were uncovered along with his feet.
Junmyeon opened the door for you with a key taken from his pocket. Your hands were shaking as you reached for the handle, but before you could walk in, he spoke up once again:
“I’ll be right here, listening.”
You hummed in agreement, eyes never leaving Chanyeol’s figure. You saw his ears twitch a little, but still not moving.
Walking in, your hands were sweaty and warm. Feeling restless you shifted from one foot to the other, looking for the perfect words to say to him. But they weren’t needed.
You saw Chanyeol’s chest rise as he breathed, then he froze. His head shot up, ears perking up in anticipation as he looked right at you. When you locked eyes with him, Chanyeol was quick on his feet, caging you with his arms after two long strides of his feet.
Tears were fast to come, fingers tightly clutching into the fabric of the hoodie. His lanky body was wrapped around you, the hug felt more like a bear’s rather than a dog hybrid’s, but it was perfect. All the words you planned to tell him died on your lips as you felt him shiver and shake against you, a drained noise leaving his mouth, involuntarily.
You twined your fingers into his hair, caressing and petting his head and ears, while he hugged you tighter.
“Y/N Noona,” he chocked out, and your heart shattered right there. “I knew you would come for me.”
“Of course, Chanyeol, of course I came.”
Soft voice and hands seemed to work wonders on him. He slowly calmed down in your arms, but refused to let you go. He kept tugging the sleeve of your coat when you let him go, only to look for a napkin to clean his face a little. You didn’t have one on you, so you wiped his tears with your fingers and the back of your hand. Chanyeol leaned into your touch, starved of affection for a long while. You were willing to give him anything he needed to see him smile again.
“Let’s sit down, Chanyeol,” you guided him to the single bed in the narrow room, very aware of the gaze staring holes into your back, watching your every move. You had to work hard to ignore it completely, and only focus on him.
Chanyeol pressed himself close to you when you took seat on the edge of the mattress, his thigh and arm aligning with yours, hands still grasping your wrist. He was trying to stop you from leaving, you realized.
“Are you here to take me back?” He asked in a raspy voice, words small compared to his size. He hiccuped and fresh tears streamed down his cheeks as you looked at him. You caught the tears before they fell, then hugged him. He felt so little in your arms. “I don’t want to go back, Noona.”
“We’re going to go home, Chanyeol,” you choked out, caressing his back slowly. “Nothing bad will happen to you ever again, okay?”
“But I don’t want to go back there! I’ll be a good boy, I promise you, so please, don’t take me back there,” he begged you.
“I won’t. I promise. Just give me a little time.”
Your whispered words were welcomed with soft humming, and he started to calm down in your hold. He just laid there, clinging to your hand and his breathing finally became even, sobs not escaping his lips anymore.
Sighing, you hugged him a little tighter.
“Can you do something for me, Chanyeol?” He stiffened in your arms, still as a stone, making you assume you said the wrong thing. But it needed to be cleared, so you continued: “You are going to come home with me, but I still have a few things to take care of. I need a week to prepare everything before I take you home. That is, if you want to live with me.”
“You’ll leave me here for one more week?”
His grasp on your hand was hard as steel. You softened your voice, trying not to upset him more.
“I’ll visit you everyday. But right now, our home is not ready yet. I have to move my things and buy you new ones.”
You decided he didn’t need to know the details of today’s happening. In a week, you’ll move out of your shared apartment and take Chanyeol to your new place. A fresh start for the both of you. You will figure out the rest together when you get there. First, you wanted to get over with this week, because you had a lot of things on your plate for now. Like moving, shopping basic stuff for Chanyeol (you would go and buy personal ones with him, so he could choose anything he wants or likes), getting paperwork done about moving out, talking with your current landlord, and the list just goes on, and on, and on.
Waiting for him to react felt like an eternity. But you were willing to wait. It was all for him, so you had to be sure he was okay with all of this. If he wasn’t a hundred percent sure, then you have to change your plans, until he is satisfied.
Voice low and shaky, he asked:
“You’ll come tomorrow too, right?”
“Yes. I will visit you every day until you can come home with me.” One of his hand landed on your knee, and gave it a squeeze. He was holding onto you with all of his might, so you added: “You’ll be okay. I promise.”
“I’m just happy that Noona found me. I thought…”
“And I’m happy that I found you. Nothing else matters. I found us a nice home, but we have to go pick your furniture and clothes yet.”
This seemed to catch his interest. His ears twitched in anticipation, and he twisted and turned in you arms until his back was laying on your lap and he could look up at you. Smiling down at him, you pushed his bangs back from his forehead. The skin around his eyes were red from crying, but the dark brown orbs finally shined with some happiness.
“I can pick anything I want?”
“Only between reasonable bounds. I’m not buying anything crazy or too pricey. I can’t afford going overboard right now.”
Chanyeol’s gaze drifted to the ceiling before locking eyes with you again. He was a little more serious now.
“I’m sorry for making you go through all this trouble for me.”
Your heart jumped in your chest, trying to escape through your throat, and you failed to slow its beating down. Without thinking, you placed a hand on his cheek, carefully caressing it. He hummed and closed his eyes in content. A smile tugged at the corner of his lips.
“It’s not a trouble at all, Chanyeol.”
He didn’t reply, rather leaned into your touch. The crease between his eyebrows seemed to dissolve slowly, and you sighed loudly. Chanyeol’s eyelashes fluttered as your breath hit his skin, but didn’t open his eyes. His hands blindly reached out, feeling around until he found yours and grabbed them. Your hands were much smaller in his warm hold.
Time went by fast, and you noticed Junmyeon knocking on the glass door.
Chanyeol shuddered in your lap, his fingers squeezing your hand, but not letting them go. As you looked up, the owner pf the shelter motioned at his wrist watch, and you knew your time was up. They were probably closing for the day.
Stroking Chanyeol’s hair and ears one more time, you urged him to get up and asked for one more hug.
“I’ll see you tomorrow, okay?”
“Mm-hm.”
“Hey, don’t be so sad! I said I’ll come by every day, and the week will be passing by fast, you’ll see.”
“Mm-hm,” he still sounded like he didn’t believe you. You patted his back, then grabbed his shoulders to look him in the eyes.
“And, Chanyeol? Eat the meals they’re giving you.”
“But they smell bad. Can’t you cook and bring it for me, Noona?”
He gave you big puppy-eyes, and you knew you were bought just like that.
Junmyeon knocked again, so you let Chanyeol go, and one more time, you promised to visit him tomorrow, too.
It felt weird tiptoeing around Seoyun in the apartment, so you went out early to work from a coffee shop or to order basic stuff for your new place. Though, after you got home last night she tried to talk to you, carefully choosing her words to find out whether you reported her or not. You refused to speak to her, and went straight to your room. Fortunately, she wasn’t brave enough to follow you.
The next day, Baekhyun waited for you with a stack of papers and a boxy grin.
“There you go!” He handed you the papers over the counter. “Junmyeon isn’t here, but asked me to give you these. It’s mostly about the usual things you should know about hybrids, their needs and how to provide them a safe home. You should go over it a few times, Junmyeon will probably test you on it before letting you sign the adopting papers.”
You were quick to flip over the pages, your eyes scanning the sentences, a few words stuck to your brain. You only paid half attention to Baekhyun. Your mind was already on the task to memorize most of those stuff sooner – it meant that Chanyeol could be with you sooner, too.
A light chuckle from the red haired man brought your attention back to him.
“You don’t have to learn all of it by today. I thought you are here to see our Chanyeol.”
“I am. How is he today?”
Stuffing the papers in your bag, next to your notebook, your eyes wandered to the food you brought for Chanyeol.
You watched Baekhyun close the shop before leading you to the back, down the same path that Junmyeon walked with you.
“He started to eat. Not much, but it’s a progress so far.” He seemed to be getting lost in his memories for a good second, before adding: “Oh, and he talks now. Mainly about you and that you will be taking him home in a week.”
Your cheeks felt hot and your head was dizzy for no apparent reason. Chanyeol must be really excited to finally get away from here, so he couldn’t stop talking about it. It was heartwarming. Now, you wanted to take him to your new home even sooner.
Baekhyun took you to the same hallway filled with doors that hid hybrids behind them. You were more confident in walking in there today, already having an idea what was waiting for you on the other side of the door.
And you were right.
Chanyeol threw himself at you, his long strides almost invisible to your eyes since he was so fast.
You heard Baekhyun laugh from behind, as you could barely keep yourself standing with all of Chanyeol’s weight put on you. You smiled and took a deep breathe of his scent. His mop of hair tickled your face, and you caressed his back with gentle touches.
“I’ll be back later, okay? I have to re-open the shop before Junymeon gets back, so be good you two!”
Barely registering his words, you were too occupied with hugging Chanyeol.
He smelled better, and wore fresh clothes. The apples of his cheeks were tinted with a light blush as he smiled right in front of your face.
You squeezed out a small ‘Yes, thank you!’ before giving your full attention to the giant hybrid attached to your body. He doesn’t seemed to listen to any of your conversation, just happily sighed in your ear and hugged you tigther.
His fluffy ears tickled your nose. You pressed a light kiss on the top of his head. Shiver ran through Chanyeol’s body.
For a long second, the world seemed to stop around you. The only sound you could hear was Chanyeol’s soft breathing. You held back your own. Waiting. And waiting.
Then the door clicked shut behind you, and you snapped out of the weirdly silent moment.
“Did you eat?”
Your question resulted in him pouting and letting his arms loose around you.
“I did. It wasn’t good.”
“I’m sure they gave you the food you need.”
“But what’s the point if it’s not delicious?” Chanyeol was acting sulky, and he kept sniffing around in the air. With his senses, he will find the food and the goods in your bag, rather sooner than later.
Combing through his hair, you petted his ears, then decided to have mercy on him and give him the dish you prepared. His head immediately shot in the direction of your bag. Eyes trained on your hands as you took out a plastic container, filled with some pasta and sauce; the very first meal you made for him.
It seemed to threw Chanyeol off. He could only stare at you and the container, eyes getting shinier with each passing second. He stopped moving over all, so you guided him to his temporary bed, and sat him down.
“You still love pasta, right?” You asked him, although you knew the answer.
He hummed eagerly. The look of concentration didn’t leave his face when you took off the container’s lid. His nostrils flared up as the meaty smell filled the small room. A warm, fluttery feeling bloomed in your chest, making you smile.
Your hand moved on its own as Chanyeol hesitantly opened his mouth, patiently waiting for you to feed him.
So you did.
Trying to stop the shaking of your hand, you moved the utensil fast close to him, ending up stuffing Chanyeol’s face. His eyes grew wide, and a satisfied smile spread on his lips. Those puppy-eyes of his shut in content, and an invisible weight quietly lifted off of your shoulders.
Seeing him eat and smile was all you could ask for in that situation. Maybe if you knew for sure if he slept well and for long enough hours, you could call it a day, but things weren’t that easy. They never were.
“In the evening I will go through all that paper, then in the morning start fixing if anything needed to be before the week ends,” you told him between two bites.
Chanyeol only hummed in response, being more interested in the food than your words. But you saw him glare in the direction of the stack of papers that were peeking out of your bag.
“Will you come tomorrow too?” He asked in a small voice.
“I will. What do you want to eat then?”
“Pasta and meat are good for me.”
After gathering and feeding Chanyeol the last pieces of the meal, you put away the container and the fork. While packing, you wondered what could you talk to him about without being insensitive. You really wanted to tell him about how it snowed during early morning, but worried if it would make him fall back into the pit of despair, so you didn’t. You remembered how you talked with him about experiencing it together by the river this winter.
Chanyeol’s face softened, a troubled expression took over his features, his smile slowly disappeared. You couldn’t solve the mystery behind the sudden change in his feelings. His eyes fell on you again, begging you to understand what he tried to communicate to you. Never in your life you wished more for the gift of reading people’s mind. But you didn’t have that power, so you asked him:
“What’s wrong, Chanyeol?”
“It’s nothing, Noona. I just… What happened to…”
There was no need for him to say who or what he was talking about anymore. You were most certain it was Seoyun. The fear in his eyes spoke more than words could. You opened your arms, inviting him for a hug to chase away his demons that manifested in the form of your old roommate. And you were willing to keep him as far away from her as you could.
Stroking through his hair, you gently whispered in his ear.
“You don’t have to worry about that. You will never meet her ever again.”
“I believe you, Noona.” He let out a sigh after saying that. Your heart shyly fluttered in your chest, and it was pointless to pretend he couldn’t hear how fast it was beating.
Days seemed to be flying past rather fast; time only seemed to slow down when you were not with Chanyeol.
He became more and more excited with every passing day, his ears kept twitching when around you, and the happy smile never left his face.
You read through all paperwork Baekhyun gave you during the time you weren’t working or with Chanyeol. Sleep wasn’t your companion lately, there was always something to do around the new apartment. Some parts even required you to make the place child-proof for him. Your days consisted of work, visiting Chanyeol, shopping and working on the apartment. Then the next day it repeated all over again.
The day finally arrived. Junmyeon welcomed you as soon as the shelter opened. You didn’t tell him that you went there an hour earlier and waited in your car until it was time.
Feelings were funny little things. They made you do stuff you never dared to imagine, but here you were: ready to adopt a hybrid – no, not just a hybrid, but Chanyeol –, who you grew so fond of. You were curious what life held for you from that point on.
“Are you ready?” Baekhyun’s red mop of hair made a sudden appearance in front of you, forcing you to make a halt in your steps. He answered his own question before you could even react. “Of course, you are. Chanyeol is really excited, he just won’t shut up about finally going home.”
“He is happy,” Junmyeon added with a more head-level tone. “But be gentle with him. He went through a serious trauma, its effect might kick in later.”
“Nightmares are for sure to be expected. Victims of abuse most of the times experience PTSD in the form of nightmares. They usually come out when they finally feel safe. Our mind do that to protect us from falling apart.”
The red head’s voice sounded sincere, free from joy or his usual spirit. You nodded at both men, not so patiently waiting for them to lead you to Chanyeol or the other way around. As if they heard your thoughts, Junmyeon motioned with his head for Baekhyun to go. His smile only then returned.
“I’ll be back with him in a moment.” With that, he left the office.
Junmyeon cleared his throat. You sat down, and the owner of the shelter gave you a little stack of papers.
“Read through them carefully, then sign at the bottom of the last page on both copies. As you requested, we included that you will have full responsibility of Chanyeol and you won’t be able to give him up in any shelter. It will be showing up on your file, just in case, and we will be sending your files to other shelters.” He coughed bashfully again. “This may seem a little too much, but we are trying to make sure he won’t have to go through that experience again.”
“It’s perfectly understandable. It will give Chanyeol reassurance, too.”
“Yes. We also included that only on his request can he be returned. I hope it won’t be the case, but if somehow the same patterns occur, Chanyeol can ask us to take him back, and a legal case will be opened up against you.”
It might have sounded scaring or alarming to anyone else, but you knew better. It was all to protect Chanyeol in the future and to secure him a safe home.
As you were going over the adoption papers, you heard a soft knock on the door. Junmyeon called them in. You watched Baekhyun return with a tall and smiling Chanyeol. His fluffy ears were twitching in excitement. When your eyes met, his smile widened and shyly walked to you. He placed his hand on the back of your chair. You couldn’t resist stroking his fingers before going back to the papers.
You finished reading them rather fast, then signed them with your initials.
It was done. The papers were signed, the apartment is ready for your future lives. It felt liberating, and a warm, bubbly feeling seeped into you. Is it what pure happiness felt like?
The four of you would have seemed like a merry little group to an outsider, but you knew that all of you were not just happy, but relieved. For Junmyeon and Baekhyun, it was a case won without any battles and they would know that a hybrid brought to their shelter will be in good care from that point on. For you, it was like saving someone so dear to your heart – a member of your family. For Chanyeol… It was written all over his face. A brand new start of his life. Finally being himself, being comfortable.
There will be difficulties, you knew that, and Junmyeon warned you earlier. But after the rain, the sun will always shine a little brighter and warmer. It was the course of life – with its occasional ups and downs.
They way to your new home was rather quiet. You saw how badly Chanyeol wanted to question where you were going, but never uttered a word. He just stared out the window from next to you, his ears still twitching from time to time as he watched the traffic around you. At a red light, he reached out for your hand. Quickly squeezing your fingers, then his hand was back on is lap.
Taking a look at his too short sweats, you said:
“Let’s go home first, and after that we could go get you some more comfortable clothes, okay?”
He nodded.
The apartment wasn’t that far from EXO Shelter with car, but it was far enough to make sure you wouldn’t accidentally run into Seoyun on a daily basis. A different part of town, more calm and modern then your previous place. You thought Chanyeol might like it when you picked it.
After parking in the buildings garage, you showed Chanyeol how to get to the lift from there, then went outside to show him the main entrance. Nothing special, but you knew he preferred walking instead of car rides, so you figured you should go that way first.
You didn’t even enter the building, but he was already holding onto the sleeve of your coat, tugging it a little with every step you took. Smiling, you got a hold of his hand, and never let go until you arrived to your apartment.
Fifth floor, door fifty-seven. A simple, light brown door, with the numbers painted on them with black.
Chanyeol clinged to you as you unlocked and opened the door, giving both of your a good look at the place. A little front area, barely big enough for two people to stand there and take their shoes off, which immediately opened into the living room. Not so big or spacious, but good enough. A TV, a coffee table, a couch and an armchair could fit in, but nothing really more. You had to make the decision of not having a dining table, since there wasn’t enough room for it, but to your luck, the kitchen was big for a little table with two chairs, and you could still comfortably cook – even if the two of you were in there. It was on the right side of the living room.
The two rooms were on the other side right next to each other, and a little bathroom next to the right bedroom. You planned to give Chanyeol the bedroom on the left side, since it had view on both the street and the small playground next to your apartment.
Chanyeol was in awe. His eyes grew bigger than you have ever seen them as he looks around the apartment. He touches everything with a little hesitancy, but as you never scold him for doing it, he becomes more courageous. Fingers dusting off your laptop on the couch, holding up some papers you have left on the small diner table, peaking into every cabinet and wardrobe.
Lastly, he goes for the bedrooms. He marches into yours, and comes out with a warm smile. Then hesitant again, he goes to his own. It seems he doesn’t like that so much, which makes your heart heavy. You know it doesn’t feel like a home to him yet – hell, it doesn’t feel like that to you either yet! –, but together you could make it.
Waiting for his reaction, still standing in the entrance area, you said:
“I know it isn’t much yet, but we can also buy some furniture tomorrow.”
He failed to respond, but you saw his tall figure slightly shake as he looked around the place again, turning his back to you. A long exhale escaped him, shoulders sank along with his whole body. The sudden change in his mood through you off too, but it was understandable. He went through a lot, more than you could ever wrap your head around now. Maybe, later he would feel safe and be comfortable enough to share it with you.
Chanyeol quickly turned and charged in your direction. Before you could understand what was happening, his arms were wrapped around you, his larger frame locking you in a tight hug. He was still shaking, more violently than before. You felt wetness falling on your face, but the tears didn’t belong to you.
“Thank you, Noona. I’m just… so happy. I’ve never had someone do so much for me and… make me this happy. I feel…”
Overwhelmed. He was feeling a lot of kind of feelings all at once, you figured from the way he sobbed and choked his words out. The torn, yet positive tone in his voice made you tear up as well.
No words were needed.
Being there for him was enough for Chanyeol to realize: he was finally home.
The first night in the apartment together was rough for both of you. Until the sun was up, everything felt light and dream like, but with the night came unsettling feelings, restlessness, mostly on Chanyeol’s side.
After dinner, he took a long shower while you cleaned up the aftermath of the meal. Washing the dishes, you proudly thought about how Chanyeol basically destroyed the dinner, even ate your leftovers.
You watched a movie later, but time was running by fast, and both of you were yawning crazily, so you decided it was time to go to bed. Wasn’t one of your best ideas, you figured later on.
Quickly showering you put on your pajamas, said goodnight to Chanyeol, but he lacked his usual shine. He was back in his gloomy mood, but you couldn’t help the tiredness that took over you. Running errands all week, while working and doing your daily things were exhausting, not even mentioning the emotional side of it all. It took its toll on you greatly.
“I’ll leave my bedroom door open, if anything happens you can come in and wake me up. Okay? And by anything, I mean anything. Bad dreams, sleeplessness, really anything. But I have to sleep for a few hours.”
“Okay. Have nice dreams, Noona.”
“You too, Chanyeol. Sleep tight, we have a long day ahead of us.”
He hummed in agreement, but it left a bitterness in you. You were prepared for a few hours of sleep, but despite the heavy feeling in your eyes, you just couldn’t fall asleep. You were hyper aware of all the noises Chanyeol made in the other room. You could hear him toss and turn almost every minute, and you couldn’t blame him. With everything that happened to him, in a brand new place, it wasn’t an easy task to sleep.
After he started to pace up and down in his room, you decided it was okay to put your tiredness aside for a little while. You went to Chanyeol’s room, and found him looking out the window, the blanket loosely wrapped around him. His tall figure looked even bigger in the mere moonlight that shone from outside, but his eyes made him vulnerable. Those lost puppy-eyes reflected loneliness and pain, that was too much for you to comprehend.
“Can’t sleep, Chanyeollie?”
Your voice was merely above a whisper.
“Mhm.”
“I told you to come to me if you have trouble sleeping,” you scolded him lightheartedly. Reaching out a hand for him seemed to work like magic, as his body responded immediately. His fingers wrapped around yours tightly.
“You were breathing slowly, so I thought you were already asleep.”
Leading him to the living room, you motioned for him to sit down, but instead he followed you to the kitchen. In two mugs, you warmed some milk for yourselves. Your mother used to give you warm milk with a hint of sugar to help you sleep easier when you were little.
Armed with your mugs, you sat down on the couch, getting comfortable in the blanket Chanyeol threw over you. It was warm from his body heat, soothing your mind with his familiar scent. He is finally safe with you, your mind kept telling you again and again.
Chanyeol kept wriggling next to you, until his side was pressed to yours, legs and arms aligning. You extended your arm for him to come even closer. He must have been touch starved, he was very much showing signs of it. You flickered through channels on the TV, desperately searching for some drama Chanyeol loved so dearly. The one you watched together last time has already finished, but some reruns would be good for now too.
“Let’s watch that,” Chanyeol said quietly at one point.
With the softly blinking lights from the TV, your eyelids got heavy again as you slowly stroked Chanyeol’s hair. Eventually, he put his head on your lap, long limbs stretching out on the little remaining space of the couch. You couldn’t see his face well, but you heard his breathing getting even and quiet, and after the first snore he let out, you allowed yourself to fall asleep.
It was still dark outside when you woke up. You couldn’t quite pinpoint what made you wake up. The TV was still flickering, the early news shows have already started. The anchor lady was talking about some petty theft case that’s been finally concluded after months of work on the police’s side. You didn’t really care, maybe if they were telling something about the hybrids, you would be glued to the screen.
Chanyeol was still sleeping on your lap, looking like haven’t moved all night, only his arms snaked around your waist. Even in his sleep he held you with a firm grip, hands fisted with the material of your shirt.
You picked up caressing his hair and his face eventually, wondering how your day should go. Shopping and arranging the furniture would take up all of your time, and you also wanted to squeeze in some cooking and working.
While you were lost in your thoughts, Chanyeol stirred. His eyelids slowly fluttered and opened, a sleepy smile instantly tugged on his lips. You returned it just as happily.
“Good morning, Chanyeol.”
“Good morning, Noona.”
“Did you sleep well? You look well rested.”
“Yes. I haven’t had any bad dreams, so it was good.”
“That’s good to hear! Soon you’ll have sweet dreams, too.”
Chanyeol looked a little unsure about your claim, but only shrugged. His eyes were big, almost begging you not to lie.
Things took a turn for the better, but it was such a slow progress, that if you wouldn’t pay attention to the little things slipping from Chanyeol’s mouth, you’d barely notice it day by day.
Half words about feeling safe. A lazy smile after a dreamless night or a nap. His innocent voice thanking you for the food you prepared. Afternoons spent together binge watching dramas. His body aligning with yours while you worked away on your laptop. The little things that showed things were going right.
There were also bad days. And even worse nights when he woke up from a nightmare, sobbing, crying, shaking endlessly, sometimes even screaming. To avoid the difficult night, he started to sleep with you more often and often. Being close to you gave him enough sense of comfort to sleep soundlessly. The promised sweet dreams only came after three months of sleeping with you.
You became used to Chanyeol being there in your room when you went to sleep. Him, looking up at you soft and sleepy from under the comforters. Every night, you went to sleep silently thanking Junmyeon, Baekhyun and Jongdae from the shelter for helping you go through with your plans. Because you wouldn’t have it any other way.
During weekends, you two went on walks around the city, always visiting a park, but you were being careful not to go near the area of your old apartment. Chanyeol was healing, he didn’t need his barely closed wounds to be ripped open again.
He even made a few friends in a nearby park. Kyungsoo, a cat hybrid and his owner, Minseok stole a place in Chanyeol’s heart. The other hybrid didn’t seem to be so fond of him and his over the place personality at first glance, but soon warmed up to him. Both you and Minseok noticed his soft expression when he thought none of you were paying attention. They became friends and regular visitors at your place, and the other way around.
Minseok was easy to talk to. Never asking too much, knowing when not to pry further into certain topics. A welcomed change after being holed up in your own world, surrounded with only work and Seoyun for so long.
The next snowfall came only in February, on a calm Saturday evening. You were already walking home. Chanyeol occasionally sniffing the air for a few hours now.
“It smells weird, Noona. So clear and fresh.”
“Do you like it?”
“I don’t know yet.”
His hand were engulfing yours while walking in silence. Chanyeol insisted holding your hand when he noticed you rubbing your fingers together, fighting against the cold. He always noticed everything when it came to you.
Chanyeol was still trying to find out why the air was so eerily fresh, and you were smiling on the inside. The weather forecast promised snowing for tonight, and you hoped it would happen before you arrive home from your little trip.
And hope was fulfilled. The first snowflake caught Chanyeol by surprise, quietly landed on his face as he was looking up at the white clouded sky, and melted immediately. He froze on spot, yanking your hand and making you stop too. His eyes grew big as the snow started to fall. White flakes landing without a pattern, first here and there, then a moment later it was everywhere. In only ten minutes there would be a white blanket laid on the city.
With bright and shining eyes Chanyeol looked at you, smiling so widely that his teeth were showing. He looked up at the sky again, watched the snow cover everything, then his eyes were on you.
“I like it, Noona, if it means it’s going to be snowing.”
He jerked your hand, making you almost trip and fall, but before any of that could happen, he catches you in his arms, hugging you tight. His breath was warm, chest rising and falling fast as he sniffed once more.
“You won’t miss the first snow with me again, Chanyeol,” you whispered to him almost shyly, and felt yourself blush as he let go of you.
“Promise?”
“Promise.”
Yeah, you thought as you continued walking home and Chanyeol kept looking at the sky, but never let go of your hand. You wouldn’t change anything about the past months if it meant you could see his smiles forever.

One day while doing some work around the horse ranch, Bdubs "accidentally" bumps Impulse into a woodchipper. Safe to say Impy boy died in that accident.
Days after Impulse's death, Bdubs started to notice the house being cleaned without him ever doing anything. Bdubs didn't really care what was going on until one night when he went to go to get a drink and he kicked something small and fleshy across the room...and heard a cry of pain in a voice eerily similar to Impulse's.
And after that, Bdubs caught sight of a small doll made of cloth that looked eerily like Impulse. The first time he saw the little Imp doll, he ran away and hid, and he did that every time Bdubs saw him. The only time he ever came close to Bdubs was when the man was pissed at a broken gate that was taking forever to fix, and shakily placed himself in front of Bdubs's boot waiting for a kick.
When Bdubs asked Cleo about this, she said Impulse's spirit was most likely in that doll, and Bdubs should be extreamly thankful he was only doing chores and offering himself up to be a stress ball and not seaking revenge.
Bdubs feels... Guilty. He feels horribly guilty. As if the judgement from Cleo wasn't bad enough, now he makes himself feel horrid!
So, he tries to be nice. As much as he knows how to be nice. He puts together a little bed, with lots of pillows and blankets. With plenty of room by it for storage. The bed is hidden, because Impulse seems to be hiding from him, so this way he'll feel safe. Yes, Bdubs is a genius!
He still rarely catches a glimpse of Impulse. The only sign that he's around is the occasional glimpse, the clean house and the slept in bed. It gets frustrating after a while. Bdubs is trying so hard to make it up to Impulse, but nothing seems to be working!
And... That's when Impulse comes out. When Bdubs is frustrated and upset. Hovering in front of Bdubs' foot and avoiding his eyes.
Bdubs sighs, leaning down and gently picking Impulse up. He tells him he doesn't have to stay here. Bdubs is sorry for what happened. Impulse is far kinder than Bdubs deserves. He expects Impulse to run away and leave, but he doesn't. No, he quietly climbs onto Bdubs' shoulder and sits there, hugging Bdubs' neck.
Bdubs realises he has... An awful lot to make up for.

a quick fic for c!dream hybrid day !! involving creeper hybrids c!dream and c!sam (what will they do)
tws: abuse, torture and death mentions, lots of Weirdness about hybrid traits bc c!sam has Issues (tm)
The cell is hot.
It cuts through even the coolant running through the insides of Sam’s armor, the residual effects of the fire resistance he downed before pearling through the lava. The air shimmers and warps next to the lava, and he turns away from the overwhelming brightness with a tight frown, fist tightening over Warden’s Will as he surveys the cell. It’s relatively clean for one of Quackity’s visits, not that that means very much. Dream has managed to pull himself upright against the back wall, eyes blank.
“Dream,” Sam rolls his eyes, rapping his sword against the floor until his gaze swivels over to focus on him. His pupils are pinpricks, shining gold.
“Sam,” Dream mutters, his voice hoarse. He blinks, shakes his head, blinks again. “Sorry.”
The apology is tacked on like an afterthought, and Sam sighs again.
“Get up.” He surveys the damage as Dream struggles up to his feet; there’s another series of bleeding gashes carved into his back, some sort of large, amorphous burn that’s ruined one pant leg and covers most of his shin, his hair stringy and wet - if Sam were to guess, from being dunked in the cauldron again. Manageable enough, even without potions, but he’ll use one anyway for his back just to ensure he won’t bleed out. Dream’s legs wobble underneath him, his ear flicking back and forth, and Sam pushes him away from the back wall of the cell with the flat of his sword, handing over a change of clothes and a health potion as he does.
“Don’t take too long,” he warns, watching carefully as Dream cradles the glass bottle with two hands. “And don’t drop the potion. You’re not getting a second one.”
“Okay.”
Sam turns away from him, looking at the blood and grime on the ground and internally lamenting the mess; no matter how many times he tells Quackity to be more careful, he never manages to listen quite as well as Sam would like. This is supposed to be better than the last few days, which - if Sam is to be fair - it is. But better doesn’t mean he’s not going to be here for the next thirty minutes mopping the obsidian, nor does it mean that Quackity hasn’t ruined yet another prison uniform that Sam will inevitably end up having to find the materials to replace. He lets his sword fall back into his inventory, pulling out a bucket of water and a mop with a frustrated sigh that barely skirts around becoming a low hiss, starting at the leftmost wall of the cell in silence.
It’s barely five minutes later when the hissing begins: an almost inaudible low hum of noise at his back that he stubbornly ignores. The mop splashes loudly as he dunks it in the water, scrubbing grit and grime from the cracks in the stone and staining the head of it red-brown, and the hissing grows in volume like it’s trying to drown it out. His fists tighten on the mop handle. There’s a puddle of dried blood and vomit in the corner he has to scrub at for a solid minute and a half. He adjusts how his mask sits on his face with one hand, a spark of a rising headache pulsing brighter against the front of his skull-
“Will you stop that?”
The hissing cuts off. Dream stares back at him, wide-eyed, the points of his eyes impossibly small and bright. Smoke curls from the corner of his lips, mouth barely open. Sam notes, with no small measure of irritation, that he has yet to put on his new shirt.
Dream looks away first. “Sorry.”
“Hurry up. And stay quiet.”
Sam turns back, mop clutched tightly in his hands until the joints of his gauntlets creak against each other, headache worsening despite the silence from the man behind him. With new vigor, he scrubs at the floor along the back of the cell, determined to leave as soon as possible.
“Sam-”
“What, Dream.”
“I- my shirt.” Sam looks back at him; with how sickly pale he’s become, the embarrassed flush that settles over his face and neck is impossible to ignore, the darker, blocky patches of green over his cheeks and shoulders much like Sam’s own fading into the rest of his skin. “I can’t-”
Sam bites back a flash of burning anger, startled momentarily at the ferocity of it even in his own head. “Figure it out, Dream. I’m not your butler.”
“Please, Sam.” Behind the words, the hissing builds, then stops. “I-”
The cell is sweltering; heat gathers at Sam’s collar, the fire resistance long having worn off. He sets his jaw and looks over at Dream, who - admittedly - looks a little pathetic. He’s tangled up in his shirt, one sleeve dangling loosely, beads of sweat gathering at his hairline from the heat or exertion. His eyes have brightened to a piercing orange, pinpricks of brilliant light in his dark eyes, and Sam feels the hairs of his neck stand on end.
“Watch it, Dream,” he mutters, waving away a curling fog of smoke and gunpowder. Dream hesitates, then nods, shoulders tight as Sam reaches for his shirt, careful not to touch him. The lava glitters at the edges of his vision, hair sticking to the skin of his neck. It’s awkward, maneuvering his arm into the sleeve, and Sam backs away immediately after with a roll of his shoulders.
“Thank you,” Dream says, voice almost a whisper. He pulls at the shirt awkwardly, wincing every so often from the strain at his back, and Sam turns his gaze back to the cell after he starts fumbling with the buttons. There’s a dull ache in his head that he tamps down, clearing his throat awkwardly as he returns to the mop.
He finishes cleaning the rest of the cell without any more interruptions, finally looking back at Dream clutching the bloody rags of his old uniform and an empty potion bottle. Sam picks up the bucket of water from the ground and returns it and the mop to his inventory.
“Sam,” Dream says, voice pitched hesitantly, and Sam feels his jaw jump.
“What now, Dream!”
Dream stares back at him, silent. His expression is unreadable, eyes an even darker orange, a dull, inconsistent buzzing making Sam’s ears ring. Inside his own ribcage, there’s something hot and bright and sharp, begging to tear loose. To swell into light and aching heat, to set the world aflame, and Sam swallows a gulp of air that’s not cool enough to do anything more than fan the flames.
“It’s hot in here, Sam,” Dream says, looking away. His eyebrows are furrowed in inscrutable thought. “It’s too hot. You know that.”
“You should’ve thought of that earlier then,” Sam says, clipped. “This cell was your design-”
“I know, I know-” Dream mutters, dismissive, and Sam forces down the hiss building in his own lungs. “But- with Quackity-”
“I don’t see how this has to do with Quackity.”
“The- the gunpowder, Sam! And the lava!” Sam’s ear flicks irritably, and he runs his hand through his hair beside it, remembering Dream’s doing the same. “It’s not- you know it’s not-”
“Quackity has been supplied a mask and appropriate precautionary equipment.” Sam’s voice comes out more guttural than he intends, and he forces himself to take a deep breath. He has to leave. The searing brightness at his sternum presses against the cool metal of his chestplate.
“You mean- a bucket of ice water and a shield? Yeah, because that’s going to do so much when I literally explode and kill us both, Sam! Don’t you remember-”
“He’s been informed with what to do in case-”
“-what happened to Tommy!”
Sam whirls around. Dream’s eyes are wide, eyes glittering in the lava’s light, lips still slightly parted as Sam stares down at him. There’s a seething rattle to the air, steam in a kettle, rising to a fever pitch as Sam feels himself move forward towards where Dream is still standing in the middle of the cell.
“Tommy? You killed Tommy, Dream! You ruined his life! You wanted to put him in here!” The mask digs into his face, knocking against his chin as his mouth moves.
“Sam-”
“You’re the reason why the cell is like this. You’re the reason why Quackity has to visit. Stop trying to- use all of these things to convince me- you know what? You’re right! You’re right, I do know what’s necessary for the cell. I know better than anyone, and you know that. So don’t try and threaten me, Dream!”
“Sam, please-”
“You deserve this, Dream-”
“SAM!”
Sam’s hand clamps around Dream’s wrist only to wrench away - the cell is hot, and Dream’s skin burns. Dream’s eyes are wide as saucers, the smoke spilling from his mouth blurring the image of his face with a hazy sheet of translucent grey, and Sam only barely registers himself pulling out a pearl and launching himself into the lava, forcing himself through over to the opposite side with his heart pounding in his chest.
He waits; one second passes, then two. His breathing is harsh and heavy and loud through the mask, hissing ringing in his ears. From Dream’s cell, there’s no sudden swell of sound, no harsh crack of an explosion tempered through the lava curtain. He forces his breathing to steady with his shoulders pressed against the atrium wall, waiting for a detonation that never comes.
Finally, relatively confident that the danger zone has passed, Sam peels himself from the wall, feeling strangely heavy on his feet, almost disoriented. He ignores the levers on the wall - Dream is fine, surely, he didn’t hear anything from the cell - and heads for the bathroom. Some cold water on his face sounds amazing right now.
(A few minutes later, he hesitates as he leans over the sink, focusing on his reflection.)
(The eyes in the mirror glow bright orange as they stare back.)
#chybrid day#tw death#tw torture#tw abuse#writing !!#my writing :D#some additional notes bc i made up so much random shit about creeper hybrids in here:#no one knew c!dream was a creeper hybrid pre-finale#creeper hybrids usually have smoke that comes from their mouth - they don't mind it#but the fumes can be noxious to others#hence c!sam and c!dream's masks#they have black sclera and white eyes Usually#but they turn yellow -> orange -> red when they get stressed/about to explode#they also usually run cold but heat up when they're about to detonate#explosions by creeper hybrids can be more controlled than regular creepers#(as in they can explode partially instead of their entire body)#but as they're still very painful + regeneration takes a long time#most avoid explosions if they can manage it#explosions become especially hard to control with heightened emotion + stress#and are very destructive + potentially fatal if you explode#so yeah c!quackity is literally torturing a living bomb that's . fun.#sam had Some weirdness about being a creeper hybrid bc of the destructiveness before#but it definitely gets 20x worse with the reveal of c!dream being one#cause he sees c!dream as being the embodiment of everything he fears about himself etc#as well as being u know. Terribly Evil.#hissing from creepers is a warning they're about to explode as well skks#so yeah a lot of sam's deal here is telling dream to control himself#as to not literally blow up#which is hard considering the constant stress of being u know. tortured.#anyway that's about all i think !! hope u guys enjoy :D

October Prompt Day 18: Picking Apples
GN Remy (they/them); GN Reader (you/your); hybrids; cow tf; Remy fluffy cow AU; Reader refers to Remy as “Master,” Reader probably has Stockholm Syndrom; mentioned past abuse
Words: 528
“What are you doing out here, silly beastie.”
You moo softly, tail swishing happily and ears perking up. You knew you weren’t supposed to leave the special pin Master put you in, and you feared the consequences for doing so, but luck seemed to be on your side today. Your Master just sighs fondly as they pat your head between your horns, pulling the lead they keep on their belt, right next to their whip, and clipping it to your collar.
You press against their side, tail brushing against their knee as you try to keep it from curling around their calf. Master didn’t like it when you were too affectionate with them with the farmhands around and you wanted to be good for them. But, it was hard. You wanted, no, needed to be next to them at all times. Needed to hear their voice and feel their touch and inhale their scent.
Sometimes, in the very dark of the night, you’d have nightmares of a life without them. Cold rooms and little food. Cruel eyes and probing fingers. When your shrieks and moos woke up the whole farm, your Master would come for you, comfort you. Sure, there were a few lingering memories from when they’d first taken you in, but you needed to learn your place. It was for the best. Now they kept you with them nearly all the time. Their “best producer,” they’d call you while dropping a kiss behind your soft ear.
So, why didn’t they let you stay with them all the time? Why even put you in a pin at all? You knew they like having you by their side. You can tell from the way their shoulders relax as you butt your head against their chest with another soft moo, the way their lips twitch into a real smile as you look at them with something close to adoration.
“Out here for apples, silly thing?”
They gesture to the trees around you, branches weighed down enough with the coveted fruit that Remy can easily reach out and pluck one from the tree. They offer the fruit to you, holding it between their thumb and forefinger so you can eat from their hand. You shake your head in a no, leaning forward but not biting into the fruit. Instead, you press a kiss to your Master’s thumb, warm leather familiar on your lips.
“Master looked lonely,” you mumble, pressing another kiss to their gloved hand.
Remy’s breath hitches, face growing warm as you travel up their hand, lips brushing over their wrist.
They jerk away from you, the motion making your ears drop, heart aching. You didn’t mean to upset your Master, but it seemed you had. Tears gather at the corners of your eyes and you’re about to apologize for acting out when Remy lets a huff, tugging on your leash as they start to walk out of the orchard.
“Come on, let’s get you back where you belong.”
You’d start crying, mooing out for forgiveness, if Remy was leading you back to the barn. They’re not. You know the way to your Master’s home by heart, after all.

Hybrid AU in exile week where avian instincts can take over to a degree that is almost horrific, erasing someone’s personality and rationality when they’re panicking. First part here.
Tommy is sick of being sat upon by some nut job he barely knows. It’s been days trapped under a Philza who doesn’t really register human words and mostly just coos whenever Tommy tries to cuss him out. Techno says it’s ‘cause Philza thinks he’s been hurt and needs to be protected, which like, yeah, fine sure, but not by Philza. Tommy already has a guardian. His abuser has to be insanely worried about him, especially after Philza assaulted him for no reason. But every time Tommy tries to escape he’s just dragged back and everything gets worse.
At least that part is familiar.
He’s forced to stay in that nest for days, and Tommy has never handled being cooped up well. Some part of him likes the weight of a parent roosting over him and the feeling of gentle hands combing through his wings and hair, but the overwhelming majority of his instincts just wants his abuser back. Techno is of absolutely no help, mostly since Philza keeps trying to murder him. But he sits in the corner and is open to chat, or read a book aloud to him to stave off some of the boredom. Best advice Techno has is that Philza will be normal again if he thinks his chick is safe and happy.
Hell no. Tommy is not feeding this guy’s delusions, especially when Techno reveals Tommy’s own feathers had been woven next to Philza’s in the nest long before Tommy’s abduction. A-grade creep behavior there. Besides, his abuser will come save him soon. Tommy is so acutely aware that he’ll never save himself.
But then it’s been days and he’s losing hope and just wants to go home, so desperately Tommy tries to figure out what Philza will register as a happy chick. Usually chirps just burst out of him, not something he controls at all, but with some struggle he forces out the little trill he made every time his abuser came home.
Something twists in Tommy’s chest as Philza echoes the joyful chirps at him. It feels horribly right, complete whereas with his abuser the greeting was never returned. That wasn’t his fault, he wasn’t an avian. Neither of them had known what was needed to soothe his instincts.
But it works. Philza blinks rapidly, pupils returning to normal. His gaze locks on Tommy, eyes filling with tears. “I’m so sorry he did this to you.” Philza wraps him in a warm hug. Juuust great. He was hoping to leave after Philza got over it. All he wants is to get back to his abuser, but when he says as much the embrace becomes a vice. Tommy naturally rejects Philza’s awful claims, growing more and more desperate as his abuser is slandered. First the absurd claim he somehow stopped Tommy from flying, like it wasn’t because Tommy was too weak and small to. And then it’s after him for not providing proper shelter at their nest, even though his abuser was trying to teach him to be responsible when he had Tommy make his shack. Then the lack of healing supplies, then the fact he was dying alone when Philza found him.
“No, it’s my fault I tried to fly when he was gone! He was there for me every time I was injured! Shut up, I can too prove it. Hard not to be there when he caused it half the time!”
For some unknowable reason, Philza doesn’t take that well. Neither does Techno, even when Tommy tries to explain they’re misinterpreting what he said, really it was Tommy’s fault, mistakes and the natural punishment for his actions. When he argues it wasn’t bad, Techno brings up the injuries a bit too old to heal when he used the potions. They try to get in his head, voicing all the thoughts in Tommy’s head before he plummeted and proved his abuser right.
Thing is, Tommy has flown before. It’s been awhile, but he has, when he was younger, knew the wondrous taste of its joy. With L’Manburg he’d been careful to fly below the walls so he didn’t get shot down. And it wasn’t possible in Pogtopia. And then after…it just seemed pointless. And now he can’t at all, and the only reason he can find is because he doesn’t deserve that joy.
Unless it was taken from him. Just like everything else, Tommy finally admits. Wearing an avian’s feathers is meant to be a promise to support them as surely as their own wings, and yet his abuser clipped his.
It’s hard, realizing he was only ever so weak because the man he trusted was sabotaging him the whole time. Twisting his instincts, forcing him to become a useless hatchling. Manipulating him so he could never fly to safety.
Tommy begins to sob.

In Hybrids AU, whenever c!Tommy gave in to his instincts, c!Dream used it/its in third person to refer to him, emphasising that by breaking this rule, he became less of a person (even though he was never one to his guardian.) c!Dream didn’t simply imply it, he often said it openly to ensure that it ingrained into the teen’s mind. :)
The routine that c!Tommy was forced to follow, was extremely effective in bending him to c!Dream’s will, as it comprised of mindless repetitive work, which is believed to be ideal for shattering one’s free will. Every morning, c!Dream made him write down the same lines of what he wanted him to believe in, for example:
“Hybrids are unnatural, repulsive and dangerous. Hybrid Hunters do us a favour by culling us. Dream was merciful and decided to make me better instead.” (@mcg-127)
“I am inferior because I am a hybrid. I do not deserve to be treated like a human. Dream is teaching me to be a person and to be better than my instincts.” (@mcg-127)
“Avian vocalisations are irritating, noisy and repulsive, if I want to ever be worthy of being seen as human, I must reject them. They might get me recognised as hybrid, and humans or hybrids would undoubtedly murder me. Dream only punishes me to protect me.”
“I should be grateful that Dream was the one who found me, because other humans are cruel, neglectful and sadistic. Unlike them, he doesn’t see me as entertainment, but genuinely cares for me, provides me with necessities, and is determined to fix and make me more human.”
After it was done, since the early morning, and almost until c!Dream’s return, he had chores to do.
In addition to that, c!Dream often referred to c!Tommy as his pet or possession, and soon enough, the teen stopped questioning it altogether; if his owner said so, it must be true.
As much as c!Dream hated hybrids, he would occasionally bring them up in front of c!Tommy, and refer to them using other pronouns, with the sole purpose of showing that although all hybrids are inferior to humans, c!Tommy would never be equal, even with his own kind.
