something you NEED to know about mo dao zu shi before you read it is that it is a murder mystery that is actually a tragedy that you don't know is a tragedy or the full extent of it's tragicness until about halfway through the murder mystery.

Canonically speaking, jc' reaction to someone he doesn't like/has strong negative feelings towards, because that person was a jerk to his sister, is to regulate his emotions according to how his sister feels. In a jyl lives au, after wwx's return, canon jc is going to his sister, saying something like: 'while I think we should throw at least a cup of tea at him because he left us you and a-ling like that, it's your choice, jin zixuan was your husband. What are we feeling now, jiejie?'

jiang cheng must have been so unbearably lonely after the sunshot campaign. his parents are gone, his shidi and shimei are scattered to the winds or dead, his home was destroyed, his sister married off into another clan, and his brother who always swore to be by his side is distant, seemingly uncaring, and eventually abandons him…even when JC tries to warn him it will be at his own peril. to top it off, all other three major clans have sworn a brotherhood oath, boxing (or triangling) him out. the eternal other, too young and too fierce and too bitter to fit in, who has to constantly prove himself, to a righteous Lan Xichen who can’t see his exclusion or understand his pain, to a cunning Jin Guangyao who sees no benefit to helping JC when he can help himself instead, and to a ruthless Nie Mingjue who has no time to care for a boy he doesn’t know beyond brief mentions from his little brother. It’s no wonder that years later he’s still entrenched in his pain after having lost his remaining support as well: Wei Wuxian and Jiang Yanli.
It’s no wonder that he cares so much for Jin Ling when that boy is all he feels he has left. It’s no wonder that he is still single, losing everyone of meaning to you would make anyone wary of loving another again. It’s no wonder he has channeled his anger to WWX….WWX couldn’t stand by and be quiet and fall in line and stay safe and live…and his actions to protest against WC, abandon his sword for demonic cultivation, protect the Wen Remnants, and attract the ire of the entire cultivation world (no matter how unintentional or based in good intentions) did end up leading to their fractured relationship, and the deaths of JFM, YZY, JYL, and WWX himself.
breaks my heart to see how desperately both JC and WWX want to be brothers at the end, but all both can see is the massive chasm of pain and secrets and betrayal and hurt between them. JC is destroyed by the fact that all his efforts to rebuild could be brushed aside by the fact that he has WWX’s core, that WWX will always be a self sacrificing idiot until the end and leave him to worry about the consequences. WWX is destroyed by the guilt he feels in sparking the ire of the Wen to hurt the Jiang family and inciting the events that led to his and JC’s beloved sister’s death.

Wei Wuxian + Crying
"Can someone tell me... what I'm supposed to do now?"

Gonna say it here too but Wei Wuxian has nothing to be sorry for regarding Nightless City.
He tried to speak but they refused to listen.
He was attacked first, defended himself, and was condemned for it.
They wanted to kill not only him, but all the innocent people he was protecting as well.
People blaming him for the ensuing slaughter when his mind broke upon Jiang Yanli’s sacrifice (which was ALSO not his fault like c’mon???) make no sense to me.
They pushed him to it.
They spit on the sacrifices of Wen Qing and Wen Ning.
They refused to hear him out and decided he was done for before Jin Zixuan even died, let’s be real.
(And no, 3000 cultivators did not die at Nightless City. Wei Wuxian straight up questions the absurdity of such a high number himself.)
I don’t know, I’ll probably delete this, but it boggles my mind when people hold this against Wei Wuxian when he was the one attacked.

I feel like there’s a point to be made about how SVSSS, MXTX’s first novel, deliberately comments on and explores the prevalence of tragically orphaned, traumatised protagonists through Luo Binghe (both versions), and explores how that trope would actually affect the characters as people. Meanwhile, her second novel tells the story of someone who at face value has a very similarly generic backstory, but she deliberately breaks past those narrative confines with Wei Wuxian, whose identity doesn’t depend on that at all.
Both characters have a very similar, deliberately ‘generic’ backstory – orphaned very young, grew up on the streets in poverty, were taken in by a cultivation sect but were abused by someone in power, and so on – but what separates them is their actions and levels of agency (both narrative and personal). If the value of it for Luo Binghe is to comment on and exploring its use as a button for sympathy points, the value of it for Wei Wuxian is to actively reject that use, and rather than using it as a way to make him tragic and sympathetic because of his helplessness, it’s used to enhance his narrative agency. He isn’t defined by it, he’s defined by what he does despite that.

Okay, I literally, physically, can't get over when Wangxian first meet.
The first shot we have of Lan Zhan is literally in slow motion, time slows down - everyone is in absolute awe of him (like look at JC).
Tumblr media
Before this wwx had been the one trying to get them into Cloud Recesses after forgetting their invination (taking the lead of the Jiang Clan, instead of jc).
Tumblr media
But as soon as lwj turns around wwx is speechless, completely captivated by the ethereal beauty of lwj. Dumbstruck, literally. Like look at his expression!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Even JC is taken aback by a speechless, shell-shocked wwx. (this never happens) JC stammers, awkwardly stepping forward to be the one talking on behave of the Jiang Clan.
Then when wwx recovers, look at how happy he is to talk to lwj.
Tumblr media
AND! and later when wwx sneaks into Cloud Recesses, his smile is so wide when he sees lwj again. He even seems shy, stuttering, not knowing what to say.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Just in general, during their time at Cloud Recesses, wwx just glowsssss whenever he sees lwj.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You can’t tell me the minute wwx met lwj he wasn't completely whipped. Head over heels.
Of course, the little dumbass was completely oblivious to the feelings he was having but was still totally and completely infatuated. Always looking and thinking of lwj even when they weren't together.
We always talk about how Lan Zhan loved Wei Ying for all those years, but we cannot forget who become utterly obsessed with who first.
Look. Just look.

I feel like the true cruelty of the lan sect is a really overlooked topic in the mdzs fandom, because when you think about it...
they practically forced madam lan into marriage so she wouldn't be executed because she killed one of her teachers, but gave her no trial or chance to explain why, and once she was married they simply locked her away and that was that. qingheng-jun then locked himself into seclusion once he had a kid and that was that, had no business with the rest of the sect and left xichen and wangji to grow up alone.
not to mention the fact that wangji even being born is suspicious... xichens conception makes sense, as they would've needed a sect heir, but wangji? how would he have been concieved, if madame lan was trapped away and qingheng-jun was in seclusion. either this is a plot hole im looking way too deep into or theres something darker happening there
in any case, the twin jades most likely did not have a good childhood. like at all. their father was completely absent, and once their mother died they were practically parentless. sure lan qiren raised them, but he was also acting as the lan sect leader whilst qingheng-jun was away, so i doubt he held much involvement in their raising other than making sure they stuck to the rules and were fed etc
SPEAKING OF THE RULES. the punishments the kids in the lan sect had to deal with?????? the fact that nhs, wwx and jc were beaten for rule breaking whilst they were staying at the lan sect as pupils just makes me wonder how badly they treat their own lan disciples if thats how they treat special guests from other clans. they were fifteen when that happened, FIFTEEN, so clearly the lan sect has no problem with LITERALLY BEATING children to teach a lesson.
its basically just abuse to keep a system in place, and it makes me wonder just how many times the twin jades suffered like that as kids to be as 'perfect' as they are as adults
the lan are so corrupt in their ways and i hate how we dont fully see that in the story until wangji is whipped for protecting wei ying. the whole situation is so fucking cruel and unnecessary it makes my blood boil whenever i reread/rewatch that part, because yes wangji did wrong by injuring the elders but the only reason he did so was because they were refusing to listen to him and quite literally trying to murder his lover.
i get he committed treason or whatever by fighting the elders but 33 whip lashes all in one go with NO breaks or healing time?? with a magical cultivated punishment whip as well, its genuinely like they were trying to kill him. even if he didnt die from the lashings themselves he could've gotten an infection, or had severe blood loss, or hell they coulve broken his spine with the force of it. it took so long for him to heal from that, and it left him with so many scars both physical and mental. that level of injury would've likely left him with some form of chronic pain or illness as well, and it was just so cruel for a situation that didn't ever need to come to this.
they forced him into seclusion, just like his father, and punished him for defending himself, just like they did his mother. xichen ended up similarly as well, with his seclusion after the events with jgy. the lan elders had seen the horrific end qingheng-jun and madame lan had, and yet did nothing to stop their children from facing the same trauma, even making theirs worse.
the lans praise themselves as a sect that sticks to righteousness and principles, when realistically its just full of hypocrites holding onto power by means of fear and punishment. they say that lwj broke the rules by fighting to save wwx, and yet somehow torturing him was completely within the rules of the clan.
their rules and image are merely a cover up for the downright abuse and silencing of their disciples, and its just so fucked up. i could rant about this for so much longer, but also wanna see what other people think before i delve into some of the other topics i have in mind that relate

The Untamed - Episode 11 - Episode 15
The woman had creamy skin and was rather beautiful, though her delicate features displayed some fierceness. The corners of her lips lay between a frown and a smile - she was a natural at sneering, just like Jiang Cheng. Her flowing purple robes wrapped around her thin waist. Both her face and her right hand, which rested on the hilt of her sword, were as cold as jade stone. A ring embellished with amethyst was worn on the index finger of her right hand.
Jiang Cheng smiled as he saw her, "Mom!"
The Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation - Chapter 51- Courage- Part 1
Madam Yu stared at his face. Suddenly she embraced him and kissed his hair a few times. With him in her arms, she murmured, "Good boy."
She hugged him so tight that it seemed as if she wanted turn Jiang Cheng into a baby and stuff him back into her stomach, so that nobody could hurt him, nobody could tear them apart. Jiang Cheng had never been hugged by his mother like this, much less kissed. His head was buried in her chest but his eyes were wide open, not knowing what to do.

Wei Changze opened his eyes suddenly, jumping from wherever he was lying down.
He died. He was certain he had died. A night hunt going wrong, the most common reason a cultivator dies.
"Oh, no... A-Ying."
A chuckle came from behind him and he turned as fast as he could, hand coming to his waist to get his sword that was not there.
A young woman, barely out of her teens, sat on a high bolder, legs dangling while her elbows were digging into her knees and hands held her chin, her thin lips covering her round cheeks. She was smiling rather happily to Wei Changze and he suddenly had a hunch that the woman was not human.
"Now you remember him." she chuckled.
He felt like an arrow went through his heart.
"Who are you?" he asked instead, trying to ignore his guilt.
"Wouldn't you like to know?" she laughed, leaning back "I have more names that I would like." she sighed, looking up, to the white, cloudless sky.
In a blink of an eye, the woman disappeared from the boulder.
Feeling something tug the back of his robe, Wei Changze turned around and found a child, a young boy.
"But you can call me Destiny."
"...I see."
The boy walked around him with a strange expression.
"This means I died." Wei Changze said.
"Not quite yet." the boy shrugged "You did die, originally, but I decided that I didn't want that."
"You decided." Wei Changze deadpanned.
"Yes!" the boy smiled happily "It would be very sad if things went the way they did again. I was scolded, you know. A lot of people died that wasn't supposed to, and the people who was supposed to ascend, didn't. It was quite a mess."
"Two new gods?"
"Yeah, but they died as humans. That was very wrong and heaven was in pure chaos. So!" the boy ran around and while Wei Changze turned to follow him with his eyes, a old woman in multicolor robes appeared "I will send you back and right those wrongs."
"You're sending me back? Why? Why me?"
"Because I can." she chuckled "It's nice to have fun like this. And if you follow the path once abruptly cut short, I can even play a few pranks."
Wei Changze was seriously confused and a little scared.
"Bit I can't simply send you back, that is not the deal me, heaven and hell have. To bring back someone, I have to take an equivalent."
"What do you mean?"
"You already know."
Silence.
They only stared at each other with different expressions.
"Who?"
"A stone with the same weight to make the same waves. You will know. But don't worry, or be sad, it's, like your kind says, for the best." she smiled kindly.
"Stones?"
"You and this other one, are like stones thrown in still water. In the center, nothing of substance will happen, but far from it, high waves ripple through. You have the same weight, make the same kind of waves, but of different outcomes." she approached him and tapped his cheek softly, a kind smile on her wrinkled face "When the time comes, I'll welcome you back, and you'll have done an splendid job."
"How do you know?"
"It's my job to." she chuckled "Now, go back, our A-Ying is waiting."
Before he could even open his mouth to question, his eyes opened again and he found himself in the eerie forest just outside the Burial Mounds, wounded but alive. He could see his wife's bloodied body Not far from him.
He cried.
Long and loud, before a long time just watching the stars twinkling and slowly disappearing with the sunrise.
He stood up.
The villagers had the fright of their lives when they saw him, dirty with earth, blood and whatever this place has, limping his way through the streets with his wife's cold body in his arms. They soon helped him and Cangse Sanren found a resting place in Yiling, of all places.
A-Ying didn't take well the news and cried and cried and cried, asking for his a-niang between pitiful sobs.
They were guests in the city's leader house until Wei Changze was fully healed and A-Ying was calmer. But as they were exchanging farewells, a few Lan cultivators arrived.
"Lan-xiong?" Wei Changze called when he saw the familiar goatee in the town market.
"Wei Changze." Lan Qiren looked at him in awe "You are alive."
"Thank Destiny." he chuckled "A-Ying, this is you a-die and a-niang's friend, Lan-shushu."
"A-niang?" his little eyes looked around in excitement, before turning sad again, hugging his father's neck and hiding from the world once more.
Wei Changze sighed "I'm sorry."
"I see." the man nodded, an serious expression in his face "There's nothing to be sorry, my friend."
"Thank you." Wei Changze nodded back, voice wet "But tell me, what brings you here?"
"You haven't heard." Lan Qiren looked surprised "Madam Jiang died in a night hunt."
"Madam Jiang? You mean... Yu Ziyuan?!"
