GENERAL THOUGHTS AFTER HOTD EPISODE 5
Rip Rhea Royce I just know that you were not hetero and tbh you showed up, insulted daemon’s virility, and immediately died and that was a pretty iconic character arc if you ask me
Laenor and Rhaenyra agreeing to have an open relationship and becoming friends and allies! We love to see it!
Joffrey talking about seeing the tournaments when Rhaenyra becomes Queen… oh my sweet summer child you shall never see them for so many reasons
But also I love that we got a little of his and Laenor’s relationship before his death
Ser Criston- bro?!?! Did you really think she was going to marry you?! What drug is this man on and where can I get some
Allicent sweetheart wtf was that skirting around the question? Just ask if Rhaenyra fucks!
But also I was very confused like did she understand that Criston and not Daemon slept with Rhaenyra? Because if so, why was she so pissed?? Like either its just a miscommunication situation, which is so dumb, or she understood that Rhaenyra didn’t lie to her so like… is she just jealous that Rhae slept with anyone?! So many questions.
The entrances. Good GOD they all slayed. The Velaryons win for having a whole ass routine and theme going on, Daemon wins for never listening to his weak ass brother and just showing up to cause chaos, and Alicent wins for badass moment and prettiest dress (well tied with Laena) because I just love that color green okay??
Rhaenyra and Laenor would definitely come across like they are a little in love to anyone who doesn’t realize because their shared excitement over their agreement and future plans was so cute. Like they seemed genuinely excited to be partners in secrets.
The dancing was SO FUN and Harwin just very subtly being the one dancing with Rhaenyra the most was great. She always seemed to be smiling or laughing in the brief scenes of them dancing together, and I’m just so glad she has him!!
The set up for Daemon and Laena was also great! Him clearly still prioritizing Rhaenyra but also noticing and being very much interested in Laena is fantastic development imo
THAT GRIP THOUGH. Like my Queen really taunted him and basically begged him to whisk her away and marry her and the way he gripped her face did not need to be so hot. I said it and I meant it.
HARWIN STRONG I LOVE YOU ugh him literally fighting his way over to Rhaenyra then throwing her over her shoulder like it was nothing was just chefs kiss
Rip Joffrey, you deserved to get to live your dreams of being in tournaments and fucking the king consort. Gone too soon
Fuck Ser Criston Cole. I do like that they made it about his “honor” or whatever as well, but it really mostly gave off the vibes of him throwing a temper tantrum just because he didn’t get what he wanted
I did love that Laena was also fighting to get to Laenor. Their bond is great and I hope we get to see them and Rhaenyra and Daemon grow closer!
Poor Laenor. The gays did not do well this episode methinks
Viserys bro why are you even still alive at this point

So here’s how I think the fight started at the end of the wedding in ep 5 of HOTD:
Last time we saw Daemon he was leaning in to kiss Rhaenyra and Criston Cole was watching Rhaenyra intently bcuz he’s down bad so I think the sight of this made him snap and he ran in to beat Daemon. Daemon clearly made a quick getaway because we don’t see him in the fight but I think Criston probably pushed Rhaenyra by trying to get to Daemon or something, details aside I think Laenor saw Rhaenyra was in the middle of something and he went over to help her because even though they’re not “in love” y’know they grew up together and they have a deep respect, care and understanding for and of each other. So Laenor goes over to help Rhaenyra and make sure she’s safe, then Criston turns his wrath on Laenor - the soon-to-be-husband of the girl he’s down bad for - and starts beating him which is where Joffrey came in to protect his boyfriend and then Criston killed him because he’d already felt threatened by him and he’d just been stewing to a boiling point all episode.

He just watched her dance.
One of my recurring thoughts regarding Daemon is that he always wanted Rhaenyra. In one way or another. In the back of his mind was always the idea that one day she would be his. In the show, Daemon spent most of his time at court with Rhaenyra. Do you know what he did? He maked her happy. He gived her gifts . He telled her about the outside world. He maded her laugh. If Daemon had wanted in all those moments they were alone he could have kidnapped to wed her , raped her or murdered her. But he only made her happy. Of course, later when she grew up their personalities so similar and their own interests made them clash, but the good times seemed be more intense than the bad times. He could have forced their lives together a long time ago. And yet he chose to sit down and watch her live her youth. Let makes her desitions. Let her dance while she was still free and innocent.
Like the Targaryen blood, their love seems to be something bad and forbidden but at the same time very pure.

Criston: Rhaenyra, will you run away with me to Essos so we can marry for love and not be bound by the rules of the land? I would give up everything for you, I have given up all I can give, and I would do it a thousand times.
Rhaenyra: uuuuh i’m sick that week

or wasn’t laenor the first person to truly treat rhaenyra as a queen, and her him as a trusted consort? wasn’t he the first to ask her “what do you propose” with no expectation or judgement, simply considering her POV before bowing in agreement? didn’t he laugh with her about the razor edge of courtly courtesy? wasn’t he the first person she screamed for when danger arose, to protect and shield each other? didn’t he look to rhaenyra for strength and she could only give him a bittersweet smile in return, the weight of shared grief settling onto their young—too young—shoulders

Something cool that I noticed about the new episode: the Daemon and Rhaenyra scene in 1x05 is almost a complete inverse of the 1x04 brothel scene. Like not just in the dialogue and characters but also in the cinematography!
In 104, we see Rhaenyra circling Daemon, taking in everything around her, her face directed outward as she looks around and learns while her body still revolves around him (literally). And when she stops, she is directly in front of him, looking up at him, seeming younger and more vulnerable. She looks more like his pupil, someone inexperienced but eager to learn.
In 105, we see Daemon circling Rhaenyra, but his sole focus is on her. Both his body and his attention are directed at her. And when he stops, he is shown as being across from her, but she looks far more powerful and confident than before, both in her posture and in her clothing and style. She looks like his equal.
In 104, we see Rhaenyra grip Daemon’s neck, and while he does also hold her face, his hold is gentle, while hers is more intentional and strong. Her hold is also the focus of the shot, whereas his is not.
In 105, we see Daemon grip Rhaenyra’s face, grabbing the side of her neck and cheek. He doesn’t gently cradle her, but instead he grips her with enough force to at least slightly pull her towards him.
In 104, Daemon coaches her, telling her that there are ways for her to still control her own life and take her own pleasures even when confined to a marriage she does not want. He uses language that isn’t too jarring or descriptive, because everything he is talking about is currently surrounding them, and she can watch and learn for herself.
In 105, Rhaenyra directs him, is almost coaching him on the exact steps he needs to take to get what he wants: her. Instead of discussing how to be happy within the “cage”, she lays out exactly how he could break her (aka their) cage and take control of their lives together. She also uses very explicit and descriptive language, because they are confined by their surroundings, rather than being instructed by them as she was in the previous episode.
In 104, Rhaenyra is the focus of almost all of the shots, both in the framing and the lighting. Daemon’s face is in shadow, and her hands and emotions are given the focus. She is shown as the focus because she is the one growing and learning through this, while he is already established as being well-versed in this particular world. (I went way deeper into the framing of this scene here).
In 105, they are both the focus. Neither one is highlighted at the expense of the other, other than Daemon’s hold on her face at the very end. But even that is seen while the focus is still on both of their faces. The camera angles alone are telling us that now they stand on equal footing.
In 104, Rhaenyra and Daemon are the subjects, but the scenes of them are combined with scenes of the people and activities that surround them. These other scenes only heighten and add to the focus on them.
In 105, Rhaenyra and Daemon are the subjects, but the scenes of them are interrupted by the people and activities that surround them. Instead of scenes being intercut and flowing together, the camera and the audience’s view is seen to be cut off by figures dancing around them, taking away from the focus on them.
All of this makes sense because they had the same director for both episodes, who is killing it by the way.

This episode was also really interesting because we really start seeing the green and black factions coming together. The obvious symbolism of Alicent wearing that green dress and declaring her allegiance to House Hightower who declared it back. Her seeking out Criston Cole in said green dress after. Larys Strong being a snitch bitch and telling her about the tea. Meanwhile the union of house Velaryon and house Targaryen not only thru Laenor and Rhaenyra but also Daemon and Laena. Harwin Strong rescuing Rhaenyra from the fight ugh it’s all being set up so well!!!
