@ido100 asked:
In your au(?), how do the dreamers react to the Vessel plan of the Pale King. I bet the mantra he accompanied with this procedure didn't sit well at least with Herrah annd Monomon.
---
Hello hello! Sorry this has taken so long - I've been dying to answer this for weeks!
I tend not to think of my interpretations as an AU since thins is just how I like to think everything played out before the events of Hollow Knight - I see interesting stuff with vague lore and my brain goes
Tumblr media
I do have some actual AUs cooking around in the brain and in my sketchbooks though they range from being their own story to "Hollow Knight but in a different setting/genre" kind of flavour.
--- So in my mind, the Dreamers would only have found out about how the Pure Vessel/Hollow Knight (PV/THK) came to be after they had agreed to the role, when they couldn't back out, as I kind of think it would have been difficult to bring them on board to plan had they known the whole story. And yeah, I definitely think the "No cost too great" mantra would not have sat well with any of them. Despite this, perhaps one of the few reasons they'd agree to such a thing was because no other options had worked.
At the same time, I also think that perhaps that they agreed to the vessel plan was because PV/THK was pretty much treated as not a being. They are just a vessel with no mind, no emotion and nothing else. So this method of dehumanisation/unpersoning perhaps made it easier to agree to the plan due to the metaphorical distance that would have been made between them and PV/THK.

Monomon's cut dialogue mentions that "we thought we'd found the answer [to dealing with the infection]" so perhaps she didn't initally think about the mantra and the vessels too much. I definitely think she thought there was a weakness to the plan hence, the extra protection in the form of Quirrel. However as time went by, she began to feel that the plan wasn't doing Hallownest good in the long run. Her cut dialogue also has her refer to PV/THK as "that tragic being" so I like to think that the reality of the Vessel plan, it's origins and the mantra only started to sink in after a long time. In addition, by the time of the game's events she seems to be of the opinion that it is better for everything to end and let Hallownest die, perhaps in the view that everything has to end at some point and maybe (in her view) something of a merciful end for everything and everyone.

I find Herrah's situation to be super interesting. It's pretty much stated that one of the main reasons she agreed to be a Dreamer is because PK offered to give her an heir in the form of Hornet and that she regarded this as a fair deal. I definitely think she would not have been super happy upon learning about the origins of PV and the application of the mantra to it but I believe she must have had a way to guarantee Hornet's safety from PK as she continues to be a seal on PV/THK by the events of the game, after PK has disappeared/fled (aside from citing Hornet as her main motivator). I'm of the opinion that for all the nasty business that went into the vessel plan, she acted and agreed to the plan in the interest of protecting her child and her people. Maybe the weight of knowing about the details and participating in the plan anyway are something she views as part of her duty as a leader to her people.

Like with my previous posts about him, I find it more interesting to headcanon that Lurien taking part in the plan is a little more complex that "Yes my king, whatever you say, I will do" because where's the fun in that? For one thing, in my little world, he was never asked to be a Dreamer. His loyalty was simply assumed. "I would have agreed to the duty, but would have killed you to ask anyway?" I imagine would be the lingering feeling in this case. I also think he would have been disgusted upon learning about the true nature and origins of PV/THK which he is implied to be aware of in his cut dialogue. I think he carries on with the plan as he sees no other viable options and acts in the interests of the kingdom and it's citizens, not just the king.
Since I think of Lurien as having a somewhat fiery personality, I like to think he would find a way to throw the "No cost too great" mantra back in PK's face like "Yeah but who's paying that cost? It certainly doesn't seem to be you." I also like to headcanon that Lurien pretty much washes his hands of responsibility regarding the creation of PV/THK. While he didn't have a hand in the creation of PV/THK and the baby pit, perhaps he considers going along with the vessel plan as him still being complicit in the whole affair. I imagine him saying something along the lines of "If the guilt of what you've done eats you alive, if at all, that's your problem. Not mine."
---
Anyway. Yeah..! That's my take on things! Thank you for the ask and for indulging me :D
Wishing you a lovely day and I hope you stay safe!
