Hello boymiffy! i wanna get into ursula k le guin! what do you recommend to read :)?
oh helloooo!
ok to start here is a post with great links to online resources such as websites and some of her essays – one of my faves is the carrier bag theory which is also available online
two of my fave of her books are the left hand of darkness (more about gender) and the dispossessed (more a discussion of society and class), which are great – the left hand of darkness is shorter and slightly less discussion of theory so is a greater starter point for her fictional worlds! all of which are available for pdf/epub here
i have not read but have heard good things also about the lathe of heaven if that is something u might be intrested in!
otherwise an easy start to her style of literature are the wizard of earthsea books which you shouldn't stay away from just because they're categorised as kids books !!
if you just look her up on youtube there is the full film of 'the worlds of ursula k le guin' (which i have not seen but looks good) and several of her talks/interviews which are all super interesting
happy reading ^_^

Hello!
Would you happen to know where the idea of not giving your true name to fae originated? I've seen it many places, but I can't quite nail down an origin on it.
Hope you're doing well, thank you so much!
Hi! The short answer is, no I don't. The long answer is mostly me speculating, but I'll do my best:
As far as I can tell the concept that fae will "steal" your name if you "give" it to them is a modern one. It's funny, it's unexpected and a fun play on the "be careful who you give your full name to". But I've never seen it in folklore or fairy tales. What does show up in folktales is fae making people forget their names when they steal them away to fairyland. It doesn't always happen, but sometimes they forget their name, who they are, and where they belong, until they are released.
The idea that names hold power is very old, probably as old as names themselves. As far back as the Mabinogion naming or not naming a child (Lleu Llaw Gyffes) or creation (Blodeuwedd) is very significant. In various Catholic traditions it was important to have someone's full name to be able to pray for them. But that importance can also be negative. In the Odyssey the cyclops cannot curse Odysseus until he knows his name.
The concept that knowing someone's full, true name is significant and potentially dangerous is very present in Western folklore. But it's usually more like "general folk wisdom" than a plot in a story that gets explained. It's closely linked to concepts of bad spirits and evil witchcraft. I think it's more likely that the fae got lumped in with them, than that they had a particular focus on names in their own right.
A good example of the power of knowing names in fairy tales is actually the other way round. The rumpelstiltskin type. Once the human knows the name of this being, they can no longer be harmed by them. There are a lot of variations on this theme, you can find some in the online collection The Name of the Helper by D. L. Ashliman.
So, if I had to give an educated guess. I'd say guarding your name against the fae is no different from guarding it against trolls, witches, or anyone else who might meddle in human affairs.

HOW DO REBLOGS WORK? 🤔
this is tea for new tumblr users about how REBLOGS work. they're different from retweets in some important ways.
RETWEETS
Tumblr media
[IMG ID: a retweet featuring Lady Gaga]
retweets are an extension of the original tweet that is to say:
they only exist as long as the original tweet exists
you can only retweet a single tweet once
they take the place of your own tweet, meaning they can clog up your feed
they can sometimes SPAM the original tweeter with notifications and thus be a bit annoying
REBLOGS
Tumblr media
[IMG ID: an image showing where the reblog button is on a tumblr post]
reblogs are their own post separate from the original:
they are a COPY of the original post, now posted on your own blog
you can reblog the same post, including your own post, infinitely
they will live on even if the original post is DELETED
they are considered your own post and therefore do not clog up your feed
the original poster has control over whether they continue to get notifications for them
reblogs are an essential part of tumblr culture
you share things you like with your audience and give each other a boost by reblogging. it's normal and expected to reblog a ton on tumblr.
this is why tumblrinas are annoyed that new people quote "don't reblog". reblogging is considered good tumblr etiquette.
this structure devalues likes because reblogging is considered normal (and is also considered the way to share posts with your own followers), likes have less value on tumblr.
your post becoming super popular can therefore be hell for you your post will become a mummified version of itself, getting reblogs, likes and shares forever. if this happens and your notes are making you want to die simply delete your original post. your content will live on without you, in infinite bliss.
a note on tags when you reblog, the tags from the original post don't stick with it unless you check a box that says "keep original tags":
sometimes keeping the original tags is ok
other times, the original tags will include things like "my art", or other personal tags used on the original posters blog to denote their own posts. reblogging with these tags can be confusing for your followers and theirs
generally, i would recommend adding your own tags or simply omitting them. reblogs are for sharing, so unless you think there's a tag that hasn't seen the post for some reason, the original tag should do the job of sharing it.
the original post will continue to collect notes (unless it is deleted, at which point each reblog will individually collect notes), which means by reblogging you not only make your own post sharing the content, but the original also gets a boost.
Tumblr media
[IMG ID: tumblr tags with helpful names - the first 5 tags feature game of thrones content, and the rest explain that after the first 5 tags the rest are only for search and personal blog organization]
you can comment on reblogs (similar to quote tweets) on twitter, you can "quote retweet" a post to add context or more information. on tumblr, you reblog the post and add some text of your own. tumblr lets you choose if this text goes on the top or the bottom of the reblogged post. this means that reblog chains are common (where a bunch of people add something in each reblog and you get a long chain of edits). this means that sometimes you will see multiple reblogs at different stages of the chain on your dash. people will comment and add context, text IDs for visually impaired or deaf folks, opinions, anything you can think of. it's cool!
Tumblr media
[IMG ID: nesting tumblr reblogs in the old style - the reblogs discuss punching a child for various amounts of money]
you can also comment in the tags
want to comment on a reblogged post without the intensity of adding text? say something in the tags! on tumblr you can write tags as long as you want, with spaces. it's NOT GOOD to add unrelated tags when they're meant for sorting and organizing (i.e. don't add #art if it's not art), but you CAN write stupid long tags that no one would search for to leave a little note for your followers or the original poster.
I HOPE THIS HELPS! you should reblog this post, as practice, totally as practice. and, also, add a note so i can see what you think of it, or maybe if you have a question or something to add.
HAPPY TUMBLRING

How do you make the iterators have such expressive eyes? I'm amazed by how much emotion you're able to give them in your art, do you have any tips you can give on how you draw the funky little eyes? :]
Ah gosh this means a lot thank you!! I have a lot of fun trying to figure out how to make iterators expressive without adding anything more onto their faces!
Aside the obvious tips of manipulating their shape, I recommend relying a lot on body language!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These two poses for example are very similar along with their eyes!
However the one on the right Moon is less enthusiastic and more so uncomfortable, her shoulders are loose her hands are barely together. The pose carries less energy, because she.. doesn't really have it! I tend to add a lot of shadow too for more intense emotions and little subtle things go a long way!
Tumblr media
Past collapse moon lacks any eye shine, because she is.. tired and kind of uh.. resigned I suppose.
I also try to make different iterators emote a little different..! It's most obvious with my UI design where her eyes are just... more.. stiff and horizontal..?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It makes her look like she's slightly squinting all the time, when she emotes her eyes either become more circular or just straight up tilt. It makes her look dorky which I enjoy. More... creature..

okay one thing about me is that i want to be authentic and write characters correctly when i write fanfiction, especially when it comes to batman because there's too many different versions! so i when i read this post from you i definitely agreed that i was one of those readers who had only been exposed to the retconned version of jason's backstory and didn't know much about the original version.
all that to say 😭 where can i read the original version of jason's backstory? i want that to stick in my brain more than the retconned one.
unfortunately (or, luckily) the only way to read jason's original (post-crisis) backstory in it's entirety is through piracy! the only robin comic of his that's currently in publication is A Death in The Family, but other than that, you'll need to find it online!
i don't want to mention the websites here in case the internet police try to take them down, but usually if you type in "(comic name) read online" in any search bar the first couple sites are trustworthy, if a little irritating to use without an ad blocker.
for jasons story (post crisis, so the story of the kid who stole the batmobile tires that we are all familiar with) you'll need to read; Batman (1940) #408-429 and Detective Comics (1937) #568-574 / #579-582. that's only around 30 issues in total! mentions of jasons life pre-batman are dotted around in these issues. it also just contains, in its entirety, some really compelling batman and robin stories!

Hey, I am not sure if this is appropriate here or not. If not please ignore. So I was searching for a jkk ff I read on ao3 long ago, now I can't find it, didn't know where to ask so I am doing it here. It starts with a plan crash news. Jk boyfriend was on that plane and v who is jm best friend was on that plane. They both are not on the survivor list. Later slowly jk and jm become friends and close. Jk starts to realize his relationship with his bf was not the healthiest and also learns that he sabotaged jks career. Finally v and jks bf comeback, they lived on some island. Jk breaks up with him. Thanks in advance if you can help❤️
I don't read RPS fics alot, so I am not often in the Jikook section of AO3 lmao so I have no idea.... But I typed Jikook plane crash fic ao3 into Google and this is what it got me and from the tags, summary and opening when I clicked on it, it sounds right. Let me know if this was what you are looking for!
I'm always happy to help y'all with whatever, just know that Jikook fic wise, I'm not the most knowledgeable, the most I can do is try to help navigate search engines lol thanks for asking though!

hiiii mel <3 i’m.. thinking of starting to write for nct.. mostly jaemin.. and i more or less have an idea for formatting but it’s been a really long time since i’ve had to do graphics for fic’s (like the banner and stuff!) and i was wondering if you had any tips for that? like where to find good pictures (solid backgrounds seem like the best choice for not clashing with the lettering, a problem i ran into unfortunately…) and also is there any particular place you get your fonts from? if you aren’t comfortable answering that (or any of this!) then that’s totally ok and feel free to just give general advice or ignore this completely :]
now i leave you with renjun… https://www.instagram.com/reel/C117-m9JGuo/?igsh=aXI1YmZ6M2YycHg1
hiii! under the cut!
so you've already got a good idea with using solid backgrounds for fic headers to make it easier for the text to show up! i source pretty much all my images from the groups/idols' official social medias. i just caution you not to take screenshots of say, instagram uploads, because this will degrade the quality of the image. either download it from twitter or wherehaveyou, or from an updates account like neocatharsis or wayvment here on tumblr! another word of caution: DO NOT DOWNLOAD TEASER IMAGES/PHOTOSHOOT IMAGES FROM CONTENT CREATORS WHO MAKE EDITS TO THE IMAGES, SUCH AS CHANGING THE COLORS, UN-WHITEWASHING, ETC., WITHOUT THEIR PERMISSION. THAT IS THEFT FROM OTHER FANS. updates accounts like neocatharsis and wayvment simply reupload the original images posted by the entertainment company/idol in the exact same form without making changes to them. editors make alterations to the image and that new image is their own creative work, separate from the original one posted. you need the editor's explicit permission in order to use their edited version as a fic header.
i do all of my editing on my phone for my fics (except for the thin section dividers that i use, which i make in pirated photoshop cs6 so i can get specific dimensions, 540x2 pixels, and make the gradients super quick in a way that i know how to do. there may be a super easy way to do this w an app on ur phone too, that's just how i know how to)
anyway, if i have a photo that i really like, that i just knowwwww matches with the image of the guy in the fic in my head or smth, that i just rlly want to use but has a busier background, sometimes i'll use the portrait editing settings on my phone to blur the background a little bit and that makes the text a lot more legible (i have a samsung but im 99% sure iphones can do this too)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
i typically don't bump it past 1 or 2, or the edges of the blur start looking a bit harsh, and i find that i don't really need more than this for the text to pop against the background anyway!
as for putting the text on the photos, i've the used the app phonto for years! it's completely free, doesn't put any watermark on your photos, comes with a bunch of fonts pre-installed, isn't super ad-heavy (it has a rlly small banner ad all the time at the top, and only shows u a skippable 10s ad when u save a finished photo), and you can download fonts from the internet to install straight into the app!
Tumblr media
my favorite free font website is dafont.com, i literally will spend hours just browsing on there looking at fonts to download lmao. anyway here's how i find fonts for stuff and download, install, and use them with dafont and phonto:
once you have phonto downloaded, open dafont.com
Tumblr media Tumblr media
up at the top, it has a bunch of different categories of fonts. for this example, i chose fancy > groovy, and then on this first page, i liked this font called "lostar" (there's also a search bar up there, but it only searches font names, not kinds of fonts, so if you're looking for a groovy-feeling font and you searched "groovy," only fonts with the word "groovy" in the name would come up)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i then press download, and open in my browser (i use firefox btw, which is why it looks like this lol). make sure you're opening the .zip file with the phonto app (it opens directly into into phonto on my phone, you may have to choose to open the .zip file using the phonto app from several options, instead of your phone's file explorer or some other app on your phone)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
in the phonto app, you have to click install, then install again (it gives you the option to rename it, but i just keep the original font name bc why would you rename it?).
that READ THIS.txt file is a message from the font maker, it's the personal use license for the font (most of the fonts on dafont.com are free for personal use ONLY, and these .txt files that are contained in the .zip files are notes from the font makers telling u what u can and can't use the fonts for. generally, as long as ur not a business, u should be good this is not legal advice, please read them. also there's usually little thank you notes from the font makers in here as well!)
Tumblr media
click ok.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
then you've got to slap some text on an image. you can choose an image from your camera roll, use one of their plain images, or open a pre-saved work-in-progress. for this example i used one of their premade gradients to make it easy
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
type whatever it is you want, click font. the left tab is the pre-installed fonts, the middle tab is the fonts that you've downloaded from elsewhere. here's the lostar we just got!
Tumblr media
oh can't see it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
there we go! how fun! i'll probably use this in a fic header in the future. download button in the top right.

Hi! Love your post so much, always makes me happy to see you on the dash. I wanted to ask about your editing process? Your screenies are so creative and beautiful! What font do you use? Thank you! Have a lovely say.
Hi anon! Ty for the kind words 🦔 <3
My editing process is pretty simple, considering reshade does a lot of the heavy lifting. I use a slightly edited version of Sunset & Vinyl (I just changed the vibrance and adof settings).
I use Photopea to edit. I like to use this psd template provided by @buglaur. You just have to resize your screenshots. Even if you don’t use a reshade, the psd file has nice coloring overlays that work well with the vanilla coloring/lighting.
If you’re editing more than one shot, I find it easier to put all of the photos into a single folder, then resizing the folder as a whole using Free Transform (grab a corner and drag while holding Alt/Cmd so it can resize uniformly from the image’s center). I just delete each image layer after i edit them^^
After my images are resized, I use the same Oil Paint and Sharpen settings laur provides except i turned them into an action.
My favorite and most used fonts are Porcelain Journal and ITC Benguiat Gothic (Sims 2 font). There's also The Sims Sans if you want a Sims 4 style font.

What do u mean by commissioned 🙃🙃
to commission me to write a piece for you would mean approaching me directly, like in DMs, to specify details and how long your story would be, and once i know those specifics, i can give you a price for the story.

absolutely no obligation to answer this at all but i saw your post abt yr hysterectomy and i was wondering if you are receiving that procedure as gender affirming care or something else ? i just have been trying to look into how to go about something like that and if it’s a gac thing i’d love to hear more about yr process ! regardless i hope the procedure goes well & am sending you good thoughts
hello!!! yes, it is considered gender affirming care. i'm getting my procedure done thru kaiser permanente, and i'm from CA. i'm also a little over a year on testosterone, and in order to start testosterone i had to get a diagnosis for gender dysphoria from a kaiser affiliated therapist (done in one 45 minute session (with a trans therapist!)). given that i already had that diagnosis, i can't say for sure that you'd need one within kaiser to be approved for a hysterectomy as GAC, but i'd imagine you probably would. my process was long & inconsistent because it consisted of mostly phone calls + appointments + reading&signing contracts, all things that almost physically pain me, but here's what it has looked like thus far:
- talked to my primary doctor about a referral to the center for reproductive health for fertility preservation + hysterectomy as gender affirming care
- she gave me a referral to the kaiser offices in the bay area, since that's where most of northern CA's gender affirming surgeries + procedures happen
- got a call from an RN to schedule an appointment with a fertility preservation specialist + a gynecologist
- gynecologist appt was first, she gave me the rundown on types of hysterectomies & told me i had the option for fertility preservation and that, because i live in CA and have non-MediCare insurance, i have partial coverage for fertility preservation services in a situation where i'm undergoing an operation that could lead to infertility.*
*we have a bill here, SB600, that basically illustrates that if you are undergoing a medical procedure that could result in infertility (like a hysterectomy or hormone replacement therapy) AND your insurance is something other than MediCal, fertility preservation care is at least partially covered by your insurance, and is treated as medically necessitated basic care.
- i said yes, I'm in the process of taking care of fertility preservation stuff & that is really valuable information to me, thank you!
- she referred me to a therapist to discuss different hysterectomy procedures + recovery time + resources for care, as well as a surgeon to have a consultation with
- few weeks after that was my appointment with the fertility preservation specialist, and we discussed how egg freezing works, what my options were in terms of continuing/stopping testosterone for a while*, and established a loose timeline we wanted to follow. she also ordered some labs (blood drawings) for me.
*the most research about egg freezing has been done on menstruating people, so while it's an option to stay on testosterone during the process, i opted to go off of it just because there are less unknown variables there, which comforts me
- met with surgeon for consultation, she read the notes my fertility preservation doc had taken, asked me some basic medical questions (re: drug use, sexual activity, etc), and we settled on a tentative date for my surgery
- had a mostly useless therapy(?) session to discuss hysterectomy recovery, settled on the operation i wanted, took notes about recovery time, etc, but most of my questions had already been answered by my surgeon + fertility preservation specialist.
- that brings us to about now. i haven't had any other appointments, but my current to do list consists of:
getting those labs done for fertility preservation
signing contracts about health+safety info, legal info, and other services related to fertility preservation
getting my birth control removed
right now, i'm aiming to have my birth control out by the middle of the month (June), egg retrieval complete by early July, and my hysterectomy is scheduled for the end of July. fertility preservation has been and will be by far the most annoying part of the process for a number of reasons, but if you're just looking into a hysterectomy it should be much more straightforward.

Hi, sorry to bother you, but I know you know a lot about Restoration England, and I was wondering if you had any resources about theatre life and especially the history of Crossdressing in Theatre at that time? IIRC around that time women were finally allowed to be actresses?
Hello there! Sorry this took a while for me to answer. Got a lot of heavy stuff going on.
Yes, re: England, the Restoration was the first time that women were officially allowed to act. Obviously, there had been women "unofficially" acting before that, but now they were allowed to very genuinely pursue a career in the theatre, and many became celebrities.
I would say that the best book on actresses in this period, a very comprehensive look at everything to do with them and their experience of the theatre, is The First English Actresses: Women and Drama 1660-1700 by Elizabeth Howe. It's sort of all-encompassing and it means you can pick out specific actresses that you may want to research further (biographies are a brilliant resource). Considering you want to look at crossdressing on the stage specifically, you could really look at any actress (since crossdressing was a big part of the Restoration actress's life) but you should definitely specifically look at Nell Gwynn (she actually had a male persona and went out in men's clothes outside of the theatre to learn masculine mannerisms etc.), Anne Marshall, and Susanna Verbruggen.
Definitely worth looking at contemporary sources, especially if you want eyewitness accounts. Samuel Pepys was a creep BUT his diary is such a valuable resource for the time period. You can read every diary entry he made here. That website is great because you can search for specific names and phrases, and also use the encyclopaedia to pinpoint specific figures or themes in the diary (he talks about the theatre A LOT - almost in every entry.)
Other things I recommend:
This thesis about the actress, Anne Bracegirdle - one of the most interesting things I've read about Restoration theatre.
This website has some really good interactive stuff, including a map of the inside of a theatre in this period. Only downside is it's on the Web Archive so it's a little bit tricky to navigate but worth persevering with.
For undergrad, we had to do a podcast episode for a course I did on this and I did one on actresses and the theatre in this period. It's not perfect, it was made nearly 7 years ago now, but I think it has some interesting stuff in there! A good summation of the topic, anyway.

hey!! what sketchbook do you use? i’m looking to get a new one but i’m not sure on the good ones 😭
hello! i'm currently using a leuchtturm1917 notebook with 120g paper, it's wasn't made for the purpose of drawing/painting, but it takes things like gouache surprisingly well!
in the past i've used a leuchtturm a5 sketchbook (specifically made for drawing) and the paper is thicker with a nicer texture! the 120g one hasn't disappointed me, but if you want something that you can use most media on, i'd go with the leuchtturm sketchbooks!
i also have a tiny (12x12 cm) talens art creation sketchbook, i've only used it a bit but i really like the paper! i'm sure their larger sizes are the same quality.
edit: the leuchtturm sketchbooks have white paper, while the notebook has a more off-white/cream shade!

Hi! I'm starting work on my gift and realized I don't know how gifts are eventually revealed... do people submit their work to their assignees ask box? Do we post it and tag them? (I know we are a ways oit but wondering if I need to be conscientious of file size) Thanks! Yall are awesome ♡
Hey!
If you check out the masterlist from last year, you can get a sense of how people typically give gifts. Just post it to your tumblr, announcing yourself TO your giftee (ideally you should tag them so they can see it!) (please also tag this account so we can see you gave your gift), and that's all you have to do. If they have an AO3, you could mark your fic a gift for that person over there as well, too.

where do you download the rookie episodes from? and do you have any tips on clarity? like your gifs are just straight from the tv lol, they're so clear and crisp! any tips?
Hi, thank you so much!! I’m glad you like them. So, we both t**rent our episodes - you can find MP4 uploads elsewhere online, but I personally think MKV files at 1080p give you the best possible quality. MP4 is good but you do sacrifice a small bit of clarity/quality, which is definitely more noticeable when you’re giffing.
I use Photoshop, so assuming you do as well, here are some tips:
Get a sharpening action if you don’t already have one! I usually sharpen my gifs twice (0.3px at 500% and 10.0x at 10%)
Play around with your save settings. Selective vs adaptive and pattern vs diffusion can be personal preference (also depends on the gif), but they’ll definitely impact how your gif comes out.
I tend to rely on my levels and my colour balance layers a lot. Both, in different ways, stop my gif from having too many neutrals! Also, try to avoid overexposing/over brightening your gifs, or making skin tones or gifs look too yellow (or too pale in Lucy’s case!)
Also, make sure you’re staying within Tumblr’s gif dimensions whenever you’re giffing! Making gifs too big or too small can sometimes mess with the quality once you upload it.

if you don't mind could you please give me some insight into how you outline/plan your writing, it's one thing I really struggle with. Hope asking isn't to much trouble.
no trouble at all anon! i love giving uneccessarily long responses about my writing process. speaking of which you asked at the exact right time because i have spent all day trying to outline that roti rewrite ive been babbling about. answer under the cut because again. i am incapable of being concise.
since what drives the plot is characters, i like to start by making a list of characters in my story that have arcs. this does not have to be all of them. in fact it will make your story a lot more complicated for every character that shows up to have an arc. some characters, even important supporting characters, can be fairly stagnant and that's okay as long as your main characters have an arc (in longform writing which i'm assuming you're doing because you're asking for outline advice)
so! since what drives the plot is characters, i like to list all the characters with arcs and write a few sentences describing their arcs throughout the story. for example:
ezekiel - starts out thinking girls are inferior until a girl saves his life and he begins questioning his beliefs. he befriends more open-minded people and finally realizes he was raised badly and rebels against his parents.
katie - is in love with sadie but is super secretive about it because she’s scared of ruining her friendship. after sadie decides to ask out a boy, katie realizes she has to take a risk and tell sadie her true feelings. her feelings end up being reciprocated and she ends up in a happy relationship with her best friend
then i like to pretty much brainstorm onto the page about what my plot is. any major events, any tiny details, just put it all onto paper. this can help generate more ideas than the ones already floating around in your head and it’s good to have all your random bits of story written down rather than subjected to the whims of your mind and yes, as i was writing this i remembered i had a character idea for a wip last night and thought it was too good to forget and now ive forgotten it. agony. anyways.
once you have all that out, see what you can shape into a chronology. maybe your story is:
the campers at playa de losers in season one discover a portal to another planet and must close it before aliens take over earth
start asking yourself/writing down questions about your plot
what happens leading up to the portal being discovered? how is it discovered? when do the aliens launch their first attack? how do the eliminated campers fight back? etc.
once you start asking yourself questions on how to get from point a to point b (in a very broad sense) you can begin to answer them. and that helps contribute to your plot. for example:
question: how is the portal discovered?
answer: justin was getting a late night snack and saw a mysterious light coming from the bathroom and saw a glowing blue portal in the toilet
that's a whole new scene for your story right there!
and not all of your brainstorm is going to make it into a chronologically ordered outline! if one of your notes is:
eva and noah do an intricate handshake involving three pineapples
but you don’t know where that goes in the story, stick it at the end of your timeline in a section i like to call “miscellaneous notes”. its where you stick ideas you have that you don’t know where they’ll go
and then you see how your list of character arcs can overlap with your chronological outline. if ezekiel needs to be saved by a girl to rethink his beliefs, and one of your plot points is
beth gives her life to hold off the aliens
then one of your major plot points can be
beth sacrifices her life to save ezekiel from the aliens which makes him doubt his sexism
you can start to see how your character arcs interact with the overall story and sometimes that means going
“hey i don’t know why the alien leader turns evil but i know he needs to turn evil for the sake of the plot. oh wait. i know that sadie going to ask out a guy is what gets katie to confess her feelings. what if the guy is the alien leader. so when sadie decides to date katie instead, the alien leader takes that rejection to heart and decides to destroy the world.”
one important lesson ive learned, that slippery slopes has definitely helped teach me, is that you don’t need an outline to contain every little detail to write your story. i used to not even start writing something unless i had every single scene planned out and summarized. but then when i started writing slippery slopes stuff i didn’t plan for just happened organically in the writing.
noah’s backstory wasn’t really planned, in the process i just kind of went, “this guy needs some more motivation” and thus jael and the quiz shows were born. ill never get over the fact that courtney and alejandro rose from the fic itself to inform me that they were best friends with similarly complicated relationships regarding family, friends, and ambition and i just went “okay yeah” and proceeded to create my favorite character dynamic ive ever written.
that time travel au ive been working on since july and have 17 chapters written for? i didn’t even know who was in the final three until last week! in fact, i have very few specifics planned for that fic besides a few major plot points and the structure of season one, and though it’s been difficult it’s been super fun to write because i’m going on such a journey with it.
that’s a lot to say that while making an outline for fics is super useful, don’t get so caught up on it to the point where you're not writing the fic at all because you think you have to plan out every little thing. as long as you have a sense of the general plot points and roughly know how you’re going to get there, then go ahead and write that fic!
