Encouragment for writers that I know seems discouraging at first but I promise it’s motivational-
• Those emotional scenes you’ve planned will never be as good on page as they are in your head. To YOU. Your audience, however, is eating it up. Just because you can’t articulate the emotion of a scene to your satisfaction doesn’t mean it’s not impacting the reader.
• Sometimes a sentence, a paragraph, or even a whole scene will not be salvagable. Either it wasn’t necessary to the story to begin with, or you can put it to the side and re-write it later, but for now it’s gotta go. It doesn’t make you a bad writer to have to trim, it makes you a good writer to know to trim.
• There are several stories just like yours. And that’s okay, there’s no story in existence of completely original concepts. What makes your story “original” is that it’s yours. No one else can write your story the way you can.
• You have writing weaknesses. Everyone does. But don’t accept your writing weaknesses as unchanging facts about yourself. Don’t be content with being crap at description, dialogue, world building, etc. Writers that are comfortable being crap at things won’t improve, and that’s not you. It’s going to burn, but work that muscle. I promise you’ll like the outcome.

So, I was today years old when I found out that "Erebor" is the elvish name for the Lonely Mountain!
I fell down a rabbit hole by accident and found out that the name “Erebor” is only used in the films - in the book The Hobbit everyone calls it The Lonely Mountain. I guess they use it in the films because it sounds somehow more magical?
Just between you, me, and the gatepost, it’s a fun headcanon to think there's no frikkin way that Thorin elf-hater Oakenshield would refer to his kingdom in elvish… opens a lot of possibilities for fic!
The khuzdul word is apparently Azsâlul'abad - I know the dwarrow wouldn’t call it that amongst outsiders, but it’s still interesting to know, especially if you’re writing from Thorin’s POV!
Anyway, this blew my mind, so I wanted to share it for anyone else who might not know!

okey dokey! i just finished the fallout show! some Thoughts under the read more
tl:dr, the (bethesda) fallout vibes were definitely there. i liked it as a show on its own merits but as a part of the series canon... i'm mad, and that anger is kind of overriding the little i liked about it. overall maybe 2.5/5 stars and im being generous
things i liked:
visually, it's stunning - i could see scenes already being made into gifsets - the color grading is pretty good; even in dark scenes i could see and understand what was happening
the sets are soooo good!! costume design was alright too
title cards were fun and cute
they did some interesting stuff with the cultures of both vault 33 and the brotherhood of steel
they used the sound effects from the games :)
i liked the wastelanders!!! big npc and random encounter energy. i kind of want a whole show of just them. for example i love the marketplace and settlement in filly; it feels very lived in
the background characters weren't just young thin able-bodied conventionally attractive white people :) there's so many elders, which i loved!! ma june and barv were cool. i love gruff old lesbians
lucy!!! she was already kind of weird and a little off-putting even in vault 33 ("what's your sperm count" as an opener to the husband she was just arranged married to is WILD) and i like that. she's sweet and bullheaded and surprisingly competent :)
maximus is kind of an ass, but is also a pathetic nerd and brotherhood dickrider who actually doesn't really know anything. kind of a girlfailure
the ghoul was pretty cool too!! i liked him, though more for his prewar story than the one he has post-apocalypse
lucy's brother norman kinda grew on me. "i lack enthusiasm for every job that i do here" so relateable. also short king <3
THE DENTIST THAT BUYS TEETH. never thought that would be a Thing but now that i think about it, it makes sense
the monsters that we have were cool!! wish there had been more of them

to summarize: it came out strong! and stumbled hard falling face fucking first at the finish line. i would have liked it a lot more if it did not shit on the west coast as much as it did. because what the FUCK. if it was set literally anywhere else and left the ncr alone i would have liked it more, because on its own, as a self-contained story, divorced from the rest of the fallout series canon, it's not bad!!! it's fun, there's some good bits, it has the ~vibes~ but - and this is a big but - i don't know what it's trying to say. it's all very surface level and the very vague themes i picked up on are not really reiterated in the plot
it's like... the bits that make it fallout are there. vaults. the brotherhood. ghouls. a dog named dogmeat. but there's something lacking. it's like your usual sci-fi post-apocalypse show with a fallout veneer. idk. i like it for what it is but also i hate it for what it's emblematic of. that's all

Hello! Hope you’re having a wonderful day. Any tips, literally any tips at all to spice up sentences? I feel like I keep on defaulting the sentences with “The” and just generally worry that they feel too repetitive. Thank you.
Great question!
I avoid this problem primarily by making sure that each paragraph starts with a different word than the one above it as often as possible. I'm looking at a draft from a WIP I'm working on right now and the words starting each paragraph (with the, character names, and dialogue omitted) are: then, before, when, it, something, if, which, this, underneath.
Those words are usually triggering or explaining action, they provide motion instead of stasis. It keeps the reader engaged in what's happening and pushes forward the action of the scene. I would encourage you to pick up a piece of writing that keeps your attention and make a note of what words they use to begin their sentences and see if you can edit a piece of your work with consideration of making sure you don't have two "the" paragraphs in a row using those words as reference.
I think recognizing your patterns is one of the first ways of fixing something, and once you start experimenting with different options you'll find your sentences naturally losing some of that repetition.

Having now seen Rebel Without A Cause, it's fascinating to me to notice just how much it seems to be embedded into the DNA of The Lost Boys. I couldn't say how much that was intentional versus how much it's just that James Dean became the blueprint for every broody, leather-jacketed, ambiguously queer teenage antihero after him, but still.

the horse sculpture is sick asf!! can you give a quick run down on how to do that! 👁👁 for a friend
i honestly have no idea what im doing! So take everything i say with a grain of salt but
Get some armature wire and make a rough skeleton in the pose you want. The trick with the drill to twist wires together in this video is really handy:

Then you bulk out the "meat" with aluminum foil. Basically you dont want a HUGE variance in clay thickness because when you bake the sculpey super thick the inside wont cure which essentially causes the cured clay to crack and slough off.
Then you start to layer thin bits of worked clay onto the foil.
I really like premo sculpey for this. It basically took one 8 oz block of premo to sculpt the horse.
You just keep smoothing and refining the shapes as you go. Try to hold the sculpture gently while you work an area and have short nails!
One of the biggest things is you want to wet your fingers with a neutral oil to smooth the clay NOT water. I just used canola oil cus i had it in the kitchen already.
The other thing is you can bake in stages.
This is the sculpt right before its first bake.
The biggest hurdle is losing your established forms while trying to detail other parts. You dont have to get everything in one go and also to get a super smooth sculpt with sharp edges requires a lot of sanding.
^this is the sculpt after a first pass of hand sanding. I got a dremel to help with shaping the hooves more after these photos.
Don't try to get everything absolutely perfect before its first bake because the polish will be through sanding and you can always add more details and rebake.
This is where im at currently after sculpting the mane and tail with sculpey super firm. I think i wouldve rather used premo again, i was just trying it out. I havent done any sanding on the mane or tail yet i will be doing that once i get my primer in tomorrow.
then after sanding the primer and doing a few coats of that i will paint!

Do you recommend any tips for defeating dreaded artblock? Also, could you give some tips on being consistent with your art + art style please 🙏
Unfortunately art block is something I continue to struggle with myself! I have certain ways to negate it if I recognize it coming on, but they may only work for me!
When I recognize art block coming on, whether its with inspiration or just not being able to draw anything right at all, I usually try a 30 min on/30 min off technique. Meaning I continue at it for 30 minutes, and then I take a break for 30 minutes (that break consists of either getting some exercise (stretches, jumping jacks, something to get my blood pumping and get out of a sitting position) or looking at pinterest/Instagram to get inspiration from my favorite artists or get into the right head space) and then continue the routine until I get myself out of an art block funk. It works a good portion of the time, but not always, and sometimes when that happens I just need to put the pen down and walk away for a day or two, doing other creative stuff to get my fix in until I'm ready to come back to it.
As far as being consistent.... yeah idk. I still struggle with that myself as my art is continually changing and growing! So sorry, idk if I have very good tips other than to reference your own work as much as possible and get into a routine with how you draw certain thinks (hair/eyes/body shapes).

(as a side note of personal importance, the gender-neutral/plural form of latino is not latinx. it is either latinos or latine. latinx is very much a gringo term and ignores the effort of actual latine advocates who have pushed for more inclusive language.)
hispanic is anyone from a spanish-speaking country, again counting for either origin or descent.
someone from spain is hispanic but not latino. someone from brazil is latino but not hispanic.
