Steve Blimkie and The Reason (1979)

First things first — I chose this album as my first review because I totally adore this guy. That being said, I seem to be the only person out there to take an interest in him! I can’t even begin to tell you how difficult it is to dig up information, but after lots of dedication, I can give you a somewhat solid biography. So, who is Steve Blimkie?

Blimkie was part of the so-called second wave of the Toronto punk scene. Edging on new wave and power pop, him and his group The Reason stood out from the rest. That is mostly due to Blimkie’s sheer energy, as stated in concert reviews I managed to find, and quite clearly here. Is it any wonder that this spunky guy originates from the radioactive village of Chalk River, Ontario? During this point of his career, he released two albums, this self titled one, and another called Chasing Paper Tigers, which we’ll talk about another time.

This album was released on Ready Records in 1979, and was one of, if not the first, albums released under that label. Interestingly enough, both Blimkie albums were advertised on the inner sleeves of many of Ready Records’ bigger releases like the Spoons and Blue Peter, all the way until the labels demise in 1985. I find it odd that he never gained more recognition! It should also be noted that The Reason contained some familiar faces, including Dave Betts, and eventually Derry Grehan who would both go on to form Honeymoon Suite.

Blimkie's vocals have a very recognizable flamboyancy to them; dramatic, but not in a way that gets annoying. For me, the standout tracks on this album are It Only Happened Twice, Can’t Say I’m Sorry, and most certainly the upbeat Subway. I really appreciate the track order of this album, I feel like the slower songs are spread out in a way that keeps it exciting. This is a record you can put on and dance!

Unfortunately, but unsurprisingly, this album is widely unavailable and is only for sale second hand. Even then, it’s a difficult one to track down if you don’t want to spend lots on Discogs. I’ve ripped and uploaded the entire album here for your listening pleasure:

For the Figaro and Willem honeymoon suite, Iain actually put a lot of thought into the characters of both of these people and what they would like rather than go researching what homeymoon suites tended to really look like. He could probably do the standard, but these weren’t standard people. They were friends. One of them being his best friend these days.

So what theme did he go with for it? Get the obvious pirate from Willem, and add in the macabre of Lovecraftian with Figaro’s love of horror, and the books that they had loaned him which were generally chilling. Rats in the Walls had him going a bit nutty for a few days. The two went quite well together, actually. Horror of the seas and all that.

The walls were all horizontal wooden planks, dark and polished like a ship that was recently prepped for the sea. Came with that fresh wood smell too, he made sure of that. Same with the floors. Solid gray oak. He actually went to the hardware store to pick it out. He was very diligent in his work. He didn’t skip any steps. Wasn’t going to disguise things like shadows in the corners.

The lights were lanterns, being strung up from the ceiling. The light switch turned them on like ordinary lights, but they gave the flicker that only flames could. They seemed to sway a little on their chains, like the room itself was moving. Like they were at sea. Other than that, the light sources were the windows, round, covered in thick black curtains. The view out of there was a storm over the sea, looking out to the city on the shore. Perhaps nothing like what most people would want on a honeymoon but this was Willem and Fig here. So of course he manipulated the view to include the large old God that this was inspired by. He could always change it if they didn’t like it, not a problem with that.

It was indeed a suite. The door opened up to the living area, with rich oxblood leather couches, barrel end tables with glass vases full of rose petals and potpourri to add some romance into it. Iain never questioned what their relationship was, especially since he knew that Willem and Livvy were still a thing. He just thought this whole thing was funny and wanted to be a part of it, so he would go a little cheesy with that sort of thing. Just a little. A thick trunk of a coffee table which opened up to reveal some kinky things that he somehow managed to order with a straight face, just assuming these two were going to find alternate uses. Flavoured condoms, a vibrating rainbow strap on, male chastity belt, a feather tickler, a crop, nipple clamps, fuzzy handcuffs of course, erotic dice, and even a pack of edible underwear. It was just hilarious. Especially when his dad saw the size of the package from the sex shop and his eyes nearly burst out of his head. All of that, along with a television that Iain bought for the purpose of mounting up, blending in with the wall seamlessly, a rug that had little skulls and crossbones and a couple of pictures framed and scattered throughout. Even a couple taken at the prom when they were both dressed up, in ornate frames, with little paper hearts around them.

Which then leads to a step up to the bedroom area. The same wood paneling and flooring all around. This was where the cheesiness was going to come in - the bed. It was big. And it had an obnoxiously large headboard with lights all around it, heart shaped. And then below that, between the bed and the heart, was a heart shaped mirror so the two could see what was going on if they were getting it on. Such a funny image. The sheets were all silk, the pillows were black, and the blankets were warm and velvet, striped in different shades of red and black. A little pile of skull candles on one of the barrel end-tables and a tentacle sticking out of the other one, worming it’s way up around the metal heart with the lights to keep everything incorporated. Another full size mirror across from it, and a tentacle chandelier hanging from the ceiling, along with a couple of those lanterns.

The bathroom was the piece de resistance. There was the heart shaped bathtub, but it wasn’t the typical heart shape that most people knew and loved. It was quite large, almost more the size of a pool that people can get for their backyard, but that’s because it was shaped like an anatomical heart. And given how many bits and bobs tend to stick out of that, he wanted each of the atriums to have space to sit against. It was dark red in color, and included jets all around to make bubbles and massage. And because the inside was red, it added that gory aspect of looking a bit like blood which Figaro would love. The mirror above the sink was round, with a ship’s wheel typed frame around it. The sink had it’s own special features too, the outside of it looking like tentacles was holding it against the wall, like they were coming through and keeping it up. The toilet was - just an ordinary toilet, but just black to match with the rest of the decor.

There were little things here and there. A black mini-fridge with heart-shaped boxes of chocolates that were very hard to get this far away from Valentines Day but there it was, along with a very good bottle of wine. A stereo so they could play music. And even - this Iain would only let Willem know if he wanted to pass on the message, a little secret hideaway that could be accessed by moving one of the barrels against the wall for Hansel if he wanted to get in. Iain saw him get excited at the prospect of the door for Hook, figured this would be no different. A full suite that only takes up the size of one door.

Honeymoon Suite - Alive

Canadian melodic rock band Honeymoon Suite released their new studio album 'Alive' last month. It features core band members, including Johnnie Dee (Lead Vocals), Derry Grehan (Guitars/Keyboards/Background Vocals), Dave Betts (Drums), Gary Lalonde (Bass), and Peter Nunn (Keyboards).

‘Alive’ is produced by notable Canadian producer Mike Krompass, whose songwriting and production credits include artists like Meghan Trainor, Steven Tyler, Theory of a Dead Man and Smash Mouth. His expertise combined with the bands celebrated melodic rock, powerful vocals and memorable guitar riffs, is sure to make this a timeless record of unforgettable rock anthems.

Honeymoon Suite was originally formed in 1981 by lead vocalist and guitarist Johnnie Dee from Niagara Falls, Ontario. In 1983, the band entered a demo of “New Girl Now” to a homegrown contest put on by Toronto rock station Q107. They won that year leading to a multi album deal.

Since their self-titled debut in 1984, Honeymoon Suite have now released a total of eight studio albums with over 1 million units sold worldwide driven by the success of a string of hit singles such as "New Girl Now", "Burning In Love", "Wave Babies", "Stay In the Light", "Feel It Again" and "What Does It Take", to name a few.

During the 1990’s, the band went through several lineup changes, but in the early 2000’s, the original lineup of Johnnie, Derry, Gary and Dave was re-formed, along with the addition of keyboard player Peter Nunn, and is still intact to this day.

The band show no sign of slowing down and plan to continue creating new music and tour all year round thanks to a legion of loyal fans.

Monsoon is followed by a cool rainfall in Vaithalmala and the field girding the hills grow to their fullest size, making it hard to walk through. Then you can enjoy Paithalmala treehouse with utmost comfort and installation.

Paithalmala Trekking

Both heavy rain and summer seasons are excellent for Paithalmala wildlife journey. The June- October thunderstorm period offers a great photographic prospect in the misty hills and timbers. In the cool rainfall following thunderstorm, the meadows and shops grow to their most, so walking becomes hard. Summer is a little tougher because moochers are ordinary and the rainfall is harsher. The most excellent time for Paithalmala trekking is conceivably between January and March.You can enter at the top of hill from Kappimala next to Alakkodu. The Pottenplave route has a motor suitable road till the original point of the journey. Plus, several resorts are coming up on this route. The hilltop is 6 km from the Kudiyanmala starting point. En route, there are fascinating falls and timber.

The overlook palace on the peak is a 45- nanosecond walk from the Paithal Valley. It offers a stunning view of the Kannur District. In fact, a walk from the impend to the timber reaching the end of the Kappimala trail is the most charming part of the Pythal Mala journey. Slow, even breaths lulled Nadja into a sense of calm, nails idly tracing Ed’s chest as she observed the sliver of moon peeking between poorly drawn curtains. Beneath her Ed’s restlessness felt palpable despite her earlier efforts- a reality confirmed when he broached the topic for the nth time this evening. A trait she initially found grating yet now accepted as second nature.

“Buy what?” Her words were equally soft, fingers never ceasing to trace. Deep down she knew his concerns were valid. With the way things were progressing the risks were only continuing to increase. At any moment Ed could be discovered thanks to him using his actual name and then what? Then everything could be over in an instant. Such thoughts only reminded her of the importance of time…and whether she was willing to provide him with even more information.

Ted Templeman has a collection of interesting credits as we have already heard in all of our discussions of the musicians about his productions. Some of the players he collaborated with can be a great addition to your 80's period playlist. For instance, he helmed Honeymoon Suite's Racing After Midnight, which remains one of those platter a group makes, when the band becomes big. You know the type I'm talking about – everything seems to be in order, though you do notice they lack someone who would've told them to think about more thoroughly. Surprisingly, Honeymoon Suite's LP doesn't have a lot of the problems I mentioned, since they operate at their best selves. Sure, you can tell they take a couple of things too easy, though this gives the record a certain charm.
