Corpse Infested
Corpse Husband & Reader (Gender Neutral)
Warnings: Mentions of dysfunctional family, Family problems, Swearing
Genre: Humor, Comfort, Platonic fluff, RPF (Real Person Fic)
Summary: When your friend disappears for a long time, seemingly having lost interest in what fueled the most passionate fire in their life, you cannot not worry about them. Even if you wanna give them space, you will reach out, you will offer your help. You will tell them they always have you to rely on and talk to.
Requested by Anon. Hi dear! I’m really sorry it’s taken me so long to complete and post your request, but here it finally is! Hope you come across it and if you do I hope you enjoy the read! Love, Vy ❤
For me, it’s never hard to find things to do. I’ve constantly got things on my mind and tasks to tend to, keeping me occupied and my mind focused at all times. I think that comes with living in a home as dysfunctional as this one. I honestly can’t recall a time when my parents got along nor can I think of a time where there was at least one second of peace while the two are both present in the house. It’s always a warzone up there. I’m saying up there because I tend to live out of the basement of their home. I know living in your parents’ basement is considered a peak loser point, or the bottom of the bottom, but you’d have to believe me when I say - I wasn’t always like this. In fact, I only recently came back to this hell-hole and boy do I regret it. I mean, it was a decision forced upon me by circumstances. Trust me, I tried every other option there was. When my dorm was to be closed down and demolished, we were given a notice to start planning our next move about a month early. You can bet I immediately started looking at places but my very tragic and miserable budget didn’t allow such a purchase. No rent was adequate for me and my near-empty wallet so my second option was moving in with my best friend who was also not in the greatest of situations but I thought I’d give that a shot too.
Spoiler alert: it didn’t work out. She lived in a tiny apartment with her boyfriend and his best friend at the time, so four people in one apartment was a nightmare. Still a lesser nightmare than this one but a nightmare nonetheless. Some unwanted and downright traumatizing events chased me out of that place after barely managing to pack my stuff. Therefore, finding myself on the streets again, I had no other option other than the obvious and least liked one: moving back in with my parents.
Making money during my first year of college hasn’t been easy. Working two jobs at once and also streaming video games on the side was what my time was filled with all throughout the first semester but then this damn pandemic started and now ruined everything for me. I had things going for me, I was slowly getting my life together and now it has all fallen apart yet again. The places I worked at closed down due to quarantine and I haven’t been able to steam, not only cause I’d be the victim of my parents’ comments but also cause my terrible home life would be exposed to all my fans and viewers. It’s not like I could cancel out the commotion going on right above my head, it’s a livestream and this house’s walls are cardboard thin meaning all the arguing I hear almost 24/7 will serve as background noise for my streams.
I haven’t reached out to my friends or fans to inform them of this which I feel slightly guilty about but I’m really not looking forward to having to lie to them, just as much as I’m not looking forward to having to tell them the truth so instead I’ve picked silence which is probably either worrying them or driving them insane. Either way, I’ll make my comeback soon.
Well....not very soon by the looks of it...
I have to gather the money, then I have to find a place, then comes the packing, moving out of here, moving into the new place...oh God, there’s so much to it that I don’t even wanna think about. Just that thought that I’ll be inactive for that long makes my stomach turn. Streaming’s where I’ve been channeling all my negative emotions, turning them into something positive and entertaining with the help of my friends.
Speaking of my friends, I should probably put emphasis on how amazing they are. Basically the older siblings I’ve always wished I had. I’m the baby of the group, the eighteen year old freshman in college, powering through life the best they can cause they are constantly getting tripped up by inconvenient occurrences such as this one for example. I tend to have the gang poke fun at me quite frequently - all lighthearted and with good intentions obviously - but they are also the ones to get super defensive if anyone gets the balls to talk shit about me. They’d never allow me to be the victim of any smack talk or online rumors and ‘cancel culture’ or whatever the hell people will come up with to leave others restless and wondering if they did something shady a decade ago. Well, to be fair, I didn’t even know about the concept of social media a decade ago and I’ve never been one to post much but I still have a protection squad in case anyone decides to come after me.
Little do they know the people I need protecting from are the very people that are supposed to protect me - my parents. Luckily, they don’t venture into to basement very often if at all and I have my own exit to the outside world so I don’t have to run into them unless I absolutely have to. The only time I emerge to the surface of the house - aka the ground floor - I do so to leave my share of rent money on the dining table and I usually do it when they aren’t home or when they’re asleep - that happens often with how many bottles they each knock back on the daily.
*sigh*...at least I don’t have to talk to them, right?
Anyhow, remember how I mentioned I always have things to do? Well, right now I’ve tasked myself with rifling through the large boxes containing random stuff I found in one of the basements down here to see if there’s anything I could possibly sell online. For starters, I’d like to hope there aren’t any severed body parts in here because this was one shady-ass basement before I moved in and un-creeped it a bit so I wouldn’t have to become an insomniac due to the paranoia of there being a homeless person down here with me or some paranormal entity. Regardless, old basements tend to be, apart from haunted, also filled with junk no one would find valuable despite it actually being worth something after all. That’s basically what I’m hoping to find at the moment.
As I dig through the contents of the first box, the YouTube playlist I have put on on my phone cuts off causing me to furrow my brows in confusion for a second before my ringtone pierces the silence the lack of music created.
I quickly mute the ringing and take a look at the Caller ID to see a name I never thought would pop up on my screen as an incoming call - Corpse. I, as well as many of our friends, know that he’s not the biggest fan of talking to people on the phone so this is rather surprising. Still, I pick up the call in case it’s not a mistake and an odd chance that it’s somethin urgent cause Lord knows Corpse doesn’t call people willy-nilly.
Thank God it’s quiet up there at the moment.
“Hello?“ I try my best to cover up the confusion in my voice but I can only assume I didn’t do the best job considering Corpse replies with a slightly awkward chuckle.
“Surprised you, didn’t I?“ He asks, getting my cheeks to redden a bit, “You can’t blame a guy for calling after up and disappearing on him and on the whole internet. Where’ve you been?“
I open my mouth to respond when I hear the sound of glass breaking a shouted curse from upstairs.
Oh for fuck’s sake!
“Um...you know, places?“ I’m aware the answer isn’t only nonsensical but also sounds more like a question, but I can hardly focus on that right now. I’m too buys praying to an entity I don’t fully believe in for the situation above to not escalate.
“Uh, is everything ok over there? Where even are you right now?“ The teasing tone to his voice is all but gone at this point, replaced with deep concern, having obviously heard the commotion that did the exact opposite of what I prayed for - escalated.
“Y-yeah, it’s ok. It’s just another Thursday, you know.“ I attempt a small laugh but it’s blatantly miserable, “I moved back in with my parents when they announced the quarantine so that’s where I’m at now. They’re not the quietest of folks as you can tell so...“
“I FUCKING HATE YOU, YOU PIECE OF SHIT! I HOPE YOU DIE“
Oh crap, here we go.
“...So I can’t really stream a lot...or at all.“ I mutter, cringing with all my might, “But it’s only temporary! I’ll get back in the saddle as soon as I find another place to stay.“ I don’t dare mention how long that’s gonna take me, it’ll be too disappointing and depressing for the both of us. “So yeah...um...thanks for showing concern but there’s really nothing to worry about. I’m ok, everything’s ok, things are just...a bit off the rails, but I’ll fix em no problem. Like I always do!“ I attempt to sound as cheerful as possible with little success due to the overwhelming anger I feel towards those people upstairs and the gut-wrenching nostalgia for the world of streaming I can no longer be a part of because of them. Actually, I put the blame first on the pandemic and second on my parents - if it wasn’t for Covid I’d probably still be in my dorm!
“Hey...um, I think I know an affordable place where you can take up residence. Only if you want to, of course.“ He sounds hesitant but I easily overlook that as excitement bursts throughout my entire being at the sound if an escape being offered to me just like that. Had I known I’d find the solution to my problem in the very people I spent time avoiding because I was afraid of their pity, sympathy and judgement.
“Oh please, it could be a rat and roach infested shoe box and I’d go running to it. How much is rent?“ I ask through a gasp of hurried laughter that’s a result of my inability to contain said excitement. Listen, I’ve been sitting here in Hellsburg for three months now and haven’t gotten a proper shuteye during that whole period, whatever Corpse is offering has to be better than this misery.
“Rent can be discussed once you move in...“ He trails off, “And it’s not rat nor roach infested but there’s a slight issue...“
“Which is?“ I’m honestly expecting the worst: in a bad neighborhood; faulty wiring with a high chance of being electrocuted; faulty piping with a high chance of flooding; people have died there; things get randomly moved around in the middle of the night etc. However, I don’t voice any of them to avoid getting laughed at for my wild imagination.
“Well, uh, it’s corpse infested.“ He says a little awkwardly, causing me to let out an inaudible sigh.
So my ‘people have died there’ guess was on point, huh?
“People have died there, huh? Well, I can turn a blind eye to that as long as I don’t find their bodies in the closet or meet their spirits at 3AM.“ I attempt to joke, now second-guessing my eagerness to accept the offer.
Corpse bursts out laughing his ass off at my statement, getting me to furrow my eyebrows in confusion and wonder what I said was so funny - it was a poor attempt at a joke, it in no way deserves that sort of reaction, barely a chuckle in my opinion.
“You’re golden, Y/N, I swear.“ He says once he forces the laughter to subside, “I meant corpse infested as in Corpse Husband infested.“ He breaks out in another fit as my brain slowly starts connecting the dots.
Oooohh he’s asking me to go live with him
“Wait. Wait, wait, wait, hold up for a sec. Are you aware of what you’re offering me? I mean, we’ve never met IRL, you barely know me and....and for all you know I could be the serial killer in this situation!“ I have no idea why I’m pushing my luck, don’t ask. I just don’t want him to make a decision he’ll later regret, I guess. “Like, I could kill you in your sleep!“
“Would you?“ He asks confidently, silently stating he already knows the answer.
I roll my eyes, “Of course not! But...” He cuts me off.
“Great, the offer stands on my end. I’m not a noisy nor nosey roommate so I suggest you start packing. If you choose to live in that hell-hole over living with me, I’m sorry but I’ll be hella offended, just so you know.“
Corpse sounds like he’s about to hang up on me, a decision already made, so I hurry to stop him. “Wait! What about rent?”
“Fuck the rent, pack your bags.“ And just like that, despite my efforts, he hangs up on me.
Well...this is a chance of a lifetime that I know refusing would lead me to not only remain stuck here but also put me in the hugest loser bin. There’s also the fear of being Corpse’s burden which I’ll try my best not to be - I mean, I’m a super independent person and Lord knows that if this offer came any other time or from any other person, I would’ve declined asap, no discussion.
But streaming
But sleeping properly
But having a normal life again
Yeah those are most certainly the reasons I get up and go into the closet in search on my emptied suitcase. Time to fill it up again, I guess. This time with a smile on my face and excitement fueling each and every movement of mine.

Wonho Blue Letter Tarot Reading Forecast
Tumblr media
DISCLAIMER: This reading is for entertainment purposes and was done by reading the current energy surrounding Wonho
This reading was requested a bit of time ago I believe, but with the announcement of Blue Letter, I wanted to take a look at what's in the cards for Wonho's new comeback! Since he's a soloist, his spread is a little different from the ones I've done for group comebacks recently, but is the same as the ones I did for Lisa and Ten. Here, we will be looking at what he wants to present outwardly, his inner feelings, the energy he's focusing on, and more info about the comeback.
Sorry for the late posting of this. This week has been insanely hectic and I've been in a lot of pain, but I wanted to make sure it was posted before the comeback!
So with that said, let's get into it!
Tumblr media
Cards used: Light Seers Tarot, Wild Unknown Animal Spirits, Barbieri Zodiac Oracle
Tumblr media Tumblr media
On the left, we have what he wants to show outwardly with this comeback, as he got the Oyster, the Fish and the Deer. On the right, we have his inner thoughts around the comeback, and he has the shark, the eagle and the zebra.
When it comes to what he wants to present to the world with this comeback, he wants to show people his charms in a truly unique way. He's determined to do this and wants people to see his passion and intensity in his performance, but also see the grace he brings to singing and dancing. I think there are some parts of himself that he's been holding back, but with this song, he wants to put everything on the table and really bare it all.
He also wants people to see the way he's adaptable and can flow with different styles and concepts. This concept might channel more feminine energy than usual, and he will handle this change of pace with confidence outwardly. This is the birth of a new era for him, and he will radiate as this side of him comes into the spotlight.
When it comes to his inner thoughts surrounding the comeback, he's nervous. He's been holding pieces of himself close to the vest, and he's nervous to expose himself in these new ways. But in his heart, he can feel that it's something that he needs to do for himself, and he's positive it'll pay off when all is said and done. He's going through an internal transformation with this, and can only hope that it radiates out of him positively. It's been challenging, but he's pushed through and feels so much better for it. He's stepping forward to be his brightest self and allow himself to truly shine. I think he might also experiment with different types of fashion and looks for the video too, which he's excited about.
He's put a lot of creative power behind this, and just wants it to be appreciated. He's enthusiastic to see everyone's responses to the song and the album as a whole, and hopes everyone can see his vision. His career and music is expanding, and he hopes everyone joins him along for the ride.
Tumblr media
Next, we have the energy he's focusing on with this comeback, and we have Jupiter in Aquarius.
He's been very focused on enjoying every piece of this process. Yes, he's worked hard, but he feels like there's no point to any of it if he allows the grind to suck the excitement out of the whole thing. He's so lucky to be able to have this as his career still, and so he just takes joy out of doing anything music related, but especially out of his comebacks.
He also has hope for this comeback, cuz he knows that wenees have his back. He doesn't need to be lucky when it comes to that, cuz they will support him and do their best to make him as successful as he can be, and that's honestly all he can ever ask for. He wants to be as connected to the fans as possible, even during this disconnected covid era, and he's trying his best to try to fill that divide.
Tumblr media
He's focusing on celebrating himself and this accomplishment, and he wants to use this song and album a s away to communicate to the fans that he feels apart from. He's put lots and lots of hard work into this, and has worked to build himself back up from the bottom. He's really hoping to expand his career and his artistry to the next level with this song, and he feels like he's achieved this.
He's taking new steps, and naturally he has some worry and fear about stepping into this unknown territory for himself. But he's trying to focus on his fans support and on all the positives that come along with this time in his life, but it can be hard sometimes. I think he still has residual fears from everything that happened with Monsta X that it can be hard for him sometimes to believe that the fans have his back, but he's trying to believe it.
He's nurtured this album like it's his baby, and has been very patient about seeing the entire process through. He's had a lot of creative ideas he's wanted to show through in this one, and he's satisfied with the way things have turned out. He's also been patient when it comes to when it would be released, and it's served to add to his anticipation.
With this album, he'll really be able to move past everything that happened in the past and step into himself in a new way. New opportunities will be revealed to him, and they'll be ones that he never thought he'd ever be able to receive. He's been holding himself back and feeling stuck, but this album will break the chains and help him to feel truly free again in a way he hasn't felt in a long while.

CHOICE Tag!!
Rules: Answer the questions (if you want to skip one, feel free to do that too of course!). Tag 3 people (or more or less, you choose really). Tag your post with #CHOICE_tag so we can find each others’ posts! Have fun!!
Tagged by: @junhee-s thanks so much for tagging me becci!! i love that we both are team callin, more people need to appreciate that iconic bop ✨) tagging @jaehyukkies @jun-hee @wabisaba
thanks for creating this @byeonqkwan - so much fun!!!
1. Introduce yourself. You choose how much and how little!
hey there it’s mare! i am a chaotic mulistan who ults a.c.e and loves them a very healthy totally normal amount. i like to make gifs and consume a lot of content.
2. How and when did you become a CHOICE?
pretty recently, actually! right around when goblin came out. I think goblin came up on one of the spotify kpop playlists, and i loved it so i checked out the music video and loved it even more. then i clicked on the mv for under cover and well, the rest is history.
3. What is your favourite part of being a CHOICE?
honestly everything, i just really love being apart of such a kind and fun fandom and getting to support a.c.e, who work super hard and deliver great music and content all the time. they’re really engaged with their fans and just care so much about a.c.e and choice. i love them so much okay!!!
4. What is your favourite A.C.E song? Do you prefer their title tracks or b-sides more?
Under cover holds a special place in my heart, but i really love all the title tracks as well as clover, slow dive, and baby tonight. a.c.e has never made a bad song, everything slaps.
5. Who’s your bias? What do you like about them?
Donghun as we all know - I could really write an essay about why, but i’ll spare everyone. he’s just an absolute wonderful person who has gone through a lot to achieve his dreams and gives so much to us as fans and i think he deserves the whole world. plus he is SO talented and serves iconic looks at every turn.
6. What is your favourite thing about A.C.E?
They have such a special bond that i think really sets them apart as a group. you can tell how much they care for and respect each other. they just work so well as a group and i really think it’s an important part of what makes them so special.
7. Which concept has been your favourite? What kind of concept do you want them to try?
everything they’ve done has been very cool, but i really loved the concept of goblin and the aesthetic. i’m really excited for siren though, what we’ve seen has looked so cool!! but i would love to see them do a ot5 take me higher 2.0 - something bright and fun!
8. Which A.C.E friendship is your favourite? Which one do you want to see more of?
honestly every pairing is really special i think  but some that i love to see together are sehyoon and byeongkwan, donghun and jun, and donghun and yuchan. especially donghun and yuchan - their oldest/maknae relationship is really special and you can tell how much they love and value each other.
9. If you could tell A.C.E one thing, what would you tell them?
that we as a fandom see everything they’ve been doing for us and appreciate them so much!! and that i love their music and think they are so talented and wonderful. honestly though if i ever met them i might just cry.
10. Which A.C.E member would die first in a horror movie?
so honestly i think yuchan would either die first or somehow miraculously be the last one alive without really doing anything to stay like, if that makes sense. but yea i could also absolutely see junhee dying first.
11. Leave a small message for your fellow CHOICE!
you all rock and i can’t wait to cry collectively over this comeback 💫

Kpop ship for yeoli-tranbolie
Sup my quarantine lads lol. I have a ship for @yeoli-tranbolie ! This is the first ship of the new group, so let’s start this group off fresh!
Based on your request I learned these things about you:
You’re 5′0 and African American
Lover of all types of music
A social-butterfly
A musician, you play the french horn
You enjoy singing
You also dance and like ballet the best
And in your request, you asked to be shipped with BTS, Monsta X, NCT, and WayV. Let’s dive right on in!
BTS: Taehyung
Happy babes who can vibe the f out, but also be jumpy happy-hyper babes. I can also totally see you two as more of the artsy couple too. You each would enjoy taking little classes and work shops to expand your skills and abilities, which would lead you two to taking the same music workshop class. The whole class would be split into groups and each group would have to make a performance. You and Tae would be put in the same group, so you would be spending a lot of time together with your group mates. Luckily, everyone is grown adults so everyone does their part. You guys put on a great show, and you’ll begin to find yourself hanging out with Tae, in a coffee shop, even more, despite the workshop being complete. You two would develop a huge crush on each other, and you’re both too shy to tell each other. You’re also worried that you two don’t like each other because you can’t get into each others brains, so you’re like “..crap.” But Tae would make the first move, like the babe would have this elaborate idea on how he was gonna tell you he liked you, but then he would get so nervous, forget what he was gonna tell you, so he was just like “okay, I like you.” And you two would soar as if there was never an issue or worry. I can see you two being one of those couples who enjoys staying at home. That doesn’t sound super exciting to some people, but I feel like you and Tae would much prefer to be in the company of each other, and you wouldn’t want to feel the pressure to conform to what people want you and Tae to be. And since you two are so into music, you enjoy chilling at home if you’re not working or doing school things, and you just listen to music. You enjoy searching new music styles together, also critiquing styles you don’t like and getting a taste for what you two have similarities and differences to. You two also enjoying doing research on artists and genres as well, so there is a lot of time that you two can spend days upon days watching documentaries on the history of classical music and Beethoven or Prince. You also enjoy joining Tae when he goes to the studio to see him work every now and then. Which Tae enjoys showing off a bit, and it’s honest really cute because he’s clumsy so sometimes he’ll forget a thing or two, or he will hit the wrong button, or even trip over a wire in the floor- it’s honestly really cute. PDA wise, Tae is a needy boy in this one. He’s not afraid to be like “hug me” and you give in bc it’s Tae. He also loves to steal kisses, so watch out for that, he’s sneaky.
Tumblr media
Monsta X: Kihyun
For this particular member, I can see you two bein the hyper social-butterfly type of couple. And omg imagine this, you two have that classic high school sweetheart gig going on and omg it’s so adorable! You’re smitten kittens who have been together for years. A lot of people and fans would be shock to know what your secret is to a happy relationship and to put it simply, it would be taking life day by day. Being flexible with each other, making each other laugh, living in the present instead of the future- that’s your secret. You two would be quite humorous to each other, so I can definitely see you two constantly making jokes to one another, being goody around one another to make each other laugh, and overall just hitting that humor spots where it counts. Communication would also be a HUGE factor for your relationship success. You can’t have a relationship without communication, and being completely honest and open with your feelings can work wonders for your relationship. You two would also be very observant of each other, it doesn’t matter what the change or topic is. Plus, you two like to keep the element of surprise in your relationship, it keeps the flame alive when you least expect it. It can also be for something that is goofy and small, like the cute stuffed alien riding a skateboard you saw at a grocery store. Kihyun will get it for you, TRUST ME. Along with being observant, you two can really read each others emotions and auras when you’re upset or if you need some space from one another, it’s completely normal, and it’s a virtue to have for you two. I also love the idea of you two working together to create beautiful music and beautiful dance. The harmonies, the way you move with each other..aaahhh, it’s magic! Imagine making a beautiful ballad together and making the SWEETEST harmony and dance to it, PURE ART MY FRIEND. P U R E ART. Another reason why y’all work is that you’re able to keep home life and work life separate. You have minor disagreements here and there for work, so you get to take your grievances out at work, then you’re peaky keen at home. Be prepared to be pampered because date nights are on Kihyun. Getting a little dressed up, going to get some good food, it doesn’t even matter if it’s ramen or fancy sushi, you’re together and that’s all that matters. You’ll take a little walk after if it’s not busy and you’ll sometimes find a little spot to sit and relax. PDA is very mild and supple. You don’t feel the huge need to put your love out there, so very soft and heart fluttering kisses, a lot of hand holding, and, knuckle kisses with “i love you’s” are his signature trademark.
Tumblr media
NCT: Yuta
Y’all are both fire crackers and I am living for it! You two definitely would keep each other on each others toes, there’s so much energy, in the best possible way. In my opinion, Yuta is very versatile. That being said, be prepared for a LOT of pick-up lines, one-liners, and cheesy jokes! To be honest, you’ll want to pull your and his hair out at some of them, because jokes aren’t always his best, but you can always laugh, rather it’s out of genuine laughter or embarrassment. You two are such cuties too, and it’s hard not to just grab him by the cheeks and tell him how cute he is. He’s that type of boyfriend that will drop a compliment bomb on you, and if you start to out do him, he will come back two times harder, he’s always determined to tell you know how much he loves you and wants you to know how pretty you are, inside and out. He’s also the type of boyfriend who likes to spoil you every now and then. Matching outfits or matching concepts are something he would enjoy, so he would know all of your sizes for clothes, and don’t be surprised if he comes home like “loOk wHaT i GoT, pHoTO sHoOt” And those photo shoots are always fun. I love to think that your and his hang out/date spot is in a practice room or recording room. You two don’t feel like big special and extravagant date night type of couple. Something like a practice room would serve as a perfect hang out spot for multiple reasons. One, you two can hang out and snuggle and relax, two, you can also be productive such as: Yuta working on an upcoming comeback, while you’re doing homework. I have this cute idea that Yuta would also want your hang out spot to be a practice room because he would want you to be near him when he worked. Yuta has a very busy man, which as we know, he works so hard, so he would actually prefer you near him when he worked. You would help him keep his stress level down and he’s also a confident boy, so he would want to show off a little, hehe. But you honestly don’t mind it, you love seeing him when he works, and you can also appreciate and let him know how good he does with his work. PDA wise, you two are adorable! I honestly believe Yuta is a snuggle bug. He loves to show his love to you in little ways, which would include the softest of hand-holding. He loves the size comparison to your hands, he also loves to touch you, so hand holding would be his favorite. Hugs, so many freaking hugs, this guys nickname could be teddy he loves to hug and snuggle so much. You don’t mind it though, because you know that if you ever need a hug or someone to hold, Yuta is right there by your side when you need it.
Tumblr media
WayV: Hendery
He is your smol bean who’s a bit chaotic at times. He’s the ultimate stress-reliving boyfriend, he’s goofy, sweet, and sympathetic. He also has his own little thing going on every now and then, which makes him even more irresistible. I like him with you most because he’s the cure to your stressful life. Life with Hendery is anything but stressful, I’ll tell you why. He’s the best freaking listener- he’s also an amazing advice giver. Hendery can shut up for two hours if it means letting you vent out all of your frustrations. Advice needed or not, he’s got your back, making him one of the best support systems you can get. He also is the king of support systems because he does these things called “you nights.” They’re simple nights in, most of the time they’re during the time when you’re having a lot of stress- when you need it most to be honest. He makes a blanket fort, fit with snacks, your fav food, pretty lights, and some of your favorites. Sometimes, he’ll even come up with fun little games to get your mind off of the stress you have, normally in a slightly destructing form. You can laugh while also taking out frustrations and anger without giving Kun a heart attack. Think of the wet paper towels thing in Friends! Hendery’s plans never seem to fail, because once you get to throwing those paper towels, your mind goes into happy mode, and all of the frustrations you have are wiped away in the blink of an eye. I also like to believe that Hendery’s curiosity card would be drawn because he would take a fascination with your ability to play the french horn. I used to play instruments myself, so I understand that you forget to practice every now and then, but Hendery would love watching you practice, he would make sure you remembered every now and then. Then, a real treat would be when Hendery would ask for a lesson or for some light tutoring. This cute son of a gon wouldn’t be able to get his mouth in the right position that’swhatshesaid so you’d squish his lips and cheeks into the right position, it would be so freaking hilarious. Date night is your specialty too! You make up for date night since Hendery does your “you nights”, so you make little thoughtful dinner dates or go out and do something that will help you two bond. Hell, sometimes you even try to cook for him! PDA is more reserved since I feel like he’s a bit more shy than Tae or Yuta. Hand holding is what’s he’s most comfortable with, to be honest, he prefers to love on you in private, he feels like he can be sweeter that way. But, if you want to woller all over him and give him the biggest kisses in the world in front of the world, he will let you, trust ya girl.~

The interview is from a book called Interviews with K-POP Stars by Park Hee A [x,x,x,x,x]
disclaimer!! this thread is meant to summarize what hoseok said in the interview and keep everything close to the original context, however it may still contain some of op’s personal interpretation of his words, so just keep that in mind :D
1. as a kid, hoseok didn't like sports, but instead fell in love with the warm-up exercise routine (which was like a light dance to him). he joined school talent shows because his schoolmates and teachers recommended him.
2. hoseok realized how much he loved dancing; his dad was against it but his mom got him into an academy. they struggled financially so his dance teacher, the leader of Neuron, let hoseok join their dance team bc he was so good, and he wouldn't have to pay for lessons anymore.
3. hoseok learned a lot of technique from the dancer AKIN and took dance lessons from him in gwangju. he also loved boogaloo (a sub-genre in popping) so much that he practiced like there was no tomorrow (and won competitions) and this was where he mostly got his style from.
4. hoseok thought street dance would help him as an idol, but was surprised to learn that there were many constraints in their choreography and made it so hard to show his dance skills. over time, he learned how to show more since BTS had been covering different dance styles.
5. street dance involves individual freestyle, but their choreography was set in frames and angles, so experiences in these two help shape the style hoseok has today.
6. bts's music videos used to focus on synchronized dance, but ever since I NEED U, they started focusing on acting. they studied acting, expressing themselves as characters, performing their roles in the story.
7. blood sweat & tears is hoseok's favorite title track choreography. he struggled with expressing his emotions, and perhaps it's the struggle that makes him feel prouder about finally being able to perform the dance.
8. the mic drop choreography is the opposite of blood sweat & tears; hoseok knew mic drop was his song and ambitiously prepared for the freestyle part with old school hip hop.
9. it was a completely new experience for 3J trying to incorporate traditional dance (fan dance, drum dance, mask dance) into their 2018 mma performance. they wanted to take things further from the oriental features in IDOL by putting a traditional concept on stage.
10. since bts was attending lots of award shows in late 2018, hoseok was afraid that they'd become complacent about attending and performing there. but he thinks if artists want the audience to have fun watching them perform, the artist should actually have fun themselves. 11. hoseok said bts wanted to make it enjoyable for the audience, even if it was more exhausting on their end. bts honestly do enjoy award show performances, and they remind themselves they receive awards from fans there so the ceremonies are meaningful to them. 12. hoseok tells us that comeback stages are for tv, demonstrating the performance as is, whereas awards ceremony and concert stages involve audience interaction. 13. at award shows, bts can't be too liberal with audience interaction because there might be fans of other artists and people who don't know them, so they usually try to stick to a script. 14. bts tries to prioritize fan interaction at concerts since the audience is mostly comprised of their fans. eye contact is a must.
15. even when bts agree on going freestyle and try to look carefree on stage, things are still strictly planned out (communication with audience is more important than performing however they want).
16. hoseok describes that he is a human being with flaws, and there are things he can’t change, but he does tries to aim for perfection.
17. to hoseok, every moment of their performance and the process behind, pouring their blood and sweat and resolving issues, made who he is today, and every moment is equally as meaningful to him.
18. hoseok's mixtape allowed him to show who he is, what he stands for, and how he wanted people to view him. by establishing his identity with this, he'd be able to relax about showing his different sides, and maybe let himself go a little next time.
19. the difference between him and namjoon/yoongi is that hoseok knew music through dance, whereas they knew music just through music. they influenced hoseok a lot, and the team gave him the opportunity to widen his spectrum on music.
20. as the choreography team leader, hoseok was really inspired by the other members' effort in dancing, even if they weren't dancers to begin with.
21. it’s important for the team to practice and move in the same mindset and work together on every move of the dance, but now that they understand each other so well, they know exactly what they need. bts always remind themselves that they perform because they love it.
22. hoseok believes the core of bts’s performances isn’t synchronized dances or powerful acrobatics, but the unique energy that comes from their heart.
23. because of long concert set lists, bts tries to conserve their strength instead of using it all up at once. saving energy isn’t slacking. they choose to focus their energy differently on what they consider important (or what requires more hype/energy).
24. hoseok tries to serve as the balancing role in group dances. though he is able to encompass different dance styles, and even if at times he wishes to be more visible, he gives up what he can to the other members, for the sake of the performance.
25. hoseok believes he has moved a step forward by integrating his experiences from past performances; they have widened his spectrum.
26. he combines improvisation with planned parts for performances like mic drop, depending on how his body goes, how the music flows, and how they vibe together.
27. boy meets evil is a painful song about a boy meeting the devil and struggling with sweet addiction; it gave him a chance to ask himself what it takes to express himself well with this challenging piece, full of acrobatics and difficult moves. (he said he really met the devil)
28. for trivia: just dance, hoseok's goal was to just enjoy it. he wanted to show how he fell in love with dance, how much he loves it and how it feels, and also showing how it fits within the narrative of his life.
29. dancing as bts j-hope is different from dancing as jung hoseok; j-hope has to consider the dance, expressions, gestures, coordinating with members and audience; hoseok’s performance would have to become more professional to be like j-hope, who receives more diverse attention.
30. hoseok has always wanted to showcase his dance like how he did as a kid, so he started doing “hope on the street” to revisit those feelings and dreams as a kid. he still loves dancing and hopes to carry on as long as he can as a performer.
31. hoseok doesn’t categorize his dance into contemporary or street; boundaries between genres are often blurred and depends on how each person perceives it. to him, it’s just about listening to the music and letting his body move. he dances just because he loves it so much.
32. when everyone in the team is worn out, hoseok gives them energy. he doesn't do it on purpose, but the members have come to embrace him that way naturally, and they have also grown to understand each other and function so well as a team.
33. bts try to express a clear message through their albums. when working on albums, namjoon and yoongi play key roles lead discussions with their insight, stories they wish to tell, and what fans are saying. they get so much energy sharing advice with each other.
34. as bts has been growing in popularity and becoming well-seasoned artists, hobi says they are able to explore more diverse possibilities and share their opinions on new ideas. it's hard to always be in agreement, so they suggest even more and better ideas in their discussions.
35. hoseok says he feels so amazing and energized on stage, but his body aches terribly as he comes off the stage (especially during the US leg of the LY tour). he thinks the gap between how he feels being on and off stage is unfairly large. that’s why he prefers being on stage.
36. even though hoseok has been on stages of drastically different sizes and shapes, they are all fundamentally the same to him. he just feels alive whenever he dances and performs, interact with the crowd, and get cheered on.
37. hoseok likes to dance because it's when he doesn't have to think about anything in the moment. all he wants is for the crowd to know that he truly enjoys it. but since bts’s stages have been growing, the added pressure makes it harder for them to perform just for enjoyment.
38. hoseok says he would like to work on stage production in the future. since he’s been on different kinds of stadiums, he thought about what kind of show he wants to present, based on his observations and experiences, though performing is still his priority.
39. he believes dance has the power to move hearts. even though how much dance means to people vastly differs, dance is effective at moving others because its power comes from “actions” that one can see, and hoseok also started dreaming about dancing as he watched others dance.
40. finally, hoseok thinks his identity is pretty straightforward: he followed that pulling attraction from dance, which led him to bts, and fans have come to appreciate him as part of bts and as a dancer, all of which have accumulated to his identity as jung hoseok and j-hope.

65. Special - Sonic Live!
Tumblr media
Previous / Table of Contents / Next
The Last Game Cartridge Hero
Writer/Pencils: Ken Penders Colors: Karl Bollers
*deep breath* …oh boy.
So this issue is kind of infamous for being, well, terrible. At least, this first story is. Even I, usually being willing to put up with a lot of crap from Penders, think this story is just a royal mess. You'll see what I mean in a second.
Anyway, the customary intro page of this issue makes some kind of allusion to Sonic being about to enter some strange other zone that's unlike anything he's ever experienced before. Indeed, the beginning shows Sonic rushing to try to rescue Sally, who's been captured by Robotnik, only to be blasted by energy bolts from behind - which, as we all know from when this exact thing happened to Robotnik in StH#21, just means he'll be catapulted into another reality instead of killed. Which reality is that, you ask?
Ha. Haaaaaa.
Tumblr media
Oh yeah. That's right, folks. It's one of these. Kenders actually recruited both his real life son and niece to be photographed and placed into the story of the Sonic comics as actual characters. Luckily this only lasts for this one issue, and they weren't made recurring characters or something, but like, damn. These children are grown-ass adults right now. I wonder what they think of this? What they think of their father/uncle respectively? If they cringe looking back at this, or look back on fondly as a cool thing they got to experience as kids? Side note as well, as I've mentioned before Ken had never played a Sonic game while he worked on the comics, nor did he own a Sega console. That's why, when Steve "dies" in the game the screen simply appears to turn off, and, if you look closely, he's not holding a game controller, but rather holding a regular TV remote sideways. Oh, Ken. Why this? Why?
Well, anyway, Sonic finds himself floating in a strange void seemingly unable to move or see anything, until the faces of these kids start looming in his face and talk about seeing him in the TV as they try to turn on their game. Sonic, worried they're going to try to turn off the TV and I guess strand him in there for longer, somehow reaches out and pulls them in instead.
Tumblr media
Great going, Sonic! Now these two kids who have no superpowers of their own are stuck in a dangerous war zone with you. Indeed, this goes as well as you might expect. He and the two kids are able to breach back into Sonic's home zone, where Robotnik has captured the rest of the Freedom Fighters and is planning to launch missiles into space to create… some kind of doomsday device? It's not really explained well beyond "killer satellites," but either way, Sonic doesn't like the idea of this, and so he starts beating up the swatbots in his way. This stops briefly when Robotnik decides to take his villainy to the next level and threaten to shoot the two random innocent kids just because they happen to be with Sonic.
Tumblr media
Of course, the swatbots aren't as fast as Sonic, which begs the question of how they even managed to blast him at the beginning of this story in the first place, and he beats the rest of them up and escapes with the kids. He takes them to the control center to shut down the missile launch, which has begun its countdown due to Sonic accidentally knocking Robotnik down onto his launch remote. Great job, buddy!
Tumblr media
They manage to shut down the missiles, but just as they do, Robotnik, Snively, Sonic, and the two kids are all pulled into a strange beam of light. Once Sonic and the kids get their bearings, Robotnik begins gloating, since apparently, during the split second between when he entered and when Sonic entered, he contacted a bunch of alternate universe copies of himself and got them to build him a big mech suit shaped like himself. Apparently, they're in yet another strange zone, and Robotnik realizes he can conquer the whole multiverse from here, not just his own version of Mobius. At least… I think that's what he's implying. Honestly, it's so unclear and all the dialogue so scattered, it's hard to even properly tell. Anyway, Robotnik throws Sonic and the kids in a prison cell with several other… humans?
Tumblr media
While Robotnik suddenly finds himself threatened by the other versions of himself, not content to be used for slave labor, Sonic has a chat with these people. Apparently, this isn't just any old zone - it's the kids' home zone, AKA, Earth! Now, this definitely isn't our Earth. These guys claim to be the designers of the Sonic games, but for one, they're decidedly not Japanese, and two, there's no mention of Sega at all. Apparently, the concept art for Sonic the Hedgehog in this world was created when they received strange interdimensional transmissions showing images of him, and they decided to make a game out of it. Not only that, but now these video game designers slash scientists have apparently created a weird prototype device that was responsible for sucking Sonic and co. into this world through a strange dimensional link. Yyyyyeah. Go ahead and try to make any sense out of this crap.
Well, anyway, Sonic and the kids notice Robotnik and Snively about to be vaporized by the angry other-Robotniks, and decide to step in and save them from certain death, or maybe just another instance of zone-hopping. Come on Sonic, this is what, the third or fourth time you had an opportunity to let this guy die and have all your problems be solved? How many other people have died in this war because you refuse to let Robotnik be killed by his own hubris? Of course, the swatbots and other Robotniks don’t like this, and so to save themselves, Sonic and the kids need to shut down the prototype linking them to this world. Turns out the way they do this… is through Sonic game cheat codes!
Tumblr media
The code recited by little Steve here is actually a real code, something I'm mildly surprised about given Ken's weird disdain for the Sonic video games. It's the level select code for the original Sonic the Hedgehog game on Genesis (non-Japanese version). If you've got a Genesis and a copy of the first game, try it yourself and see. In this world, however, it's apparently the shutdown code for the swatbots, and thus everyone is saved. The game designer scientist guys use the prototype's dimensional link to send Sonic, Robotnik and Snively back to their own zone, and Sonic has a happy reunion with his friends, who have been mysteriously freed from captivity in the meantime.
Tumblr media
Oh, boy. Someone needs to tell Kenders that the Sonic games don't actually depict Sonic from the comics. These kids aren't gonna have any idea what the Sonic they were traveling with is up to, because all they'll be doing is playing as a different, more turquoise-colored Sonic, battling some weird dude called "Eggman" and collecting seven multicolored Chaos Emeralds to save a planet that definitely isn't called Mobius. Shame.
The Substitute Freedom Fighters
Writer: Rich Koslowski Pencils: Art Mawhinney Colors: Karl Bollers
So you may be wondering. How exactly did the Freedom Fighters even get captured in the first place, and how did they escape while Sonic and the others were stuck in the "real world"? This story is here to answer our questions! Apparently, while Sonic is just off derping around somewhere else, the others are watching Rotor create a new micro-cam that he can attach to his bandolier, working kind of like a body cam so they can review footage of battles after the fact and learn from them. Fortunately for them, some swatbots immediately show up to let them test out their new invention. Unfortunately for them, they get overwhelmed and dragged back to Robotnik.
Tumblr media
Hey, look who it is! Larry Lynx has made his comeback, and he's noticed everyone's disappearance… as well as the ongoing live feed from Rotor's micro-cam. Realizing everyone is in danger, he rallies the first people he sees training - Cyril Eagle, and Sally's old recruits. They team up and fight their way into Robotropolis, Larry using his famous bad luck to make sure the swatbots lose every time, and they're able to eventually find the captured Freedom Fighters and liberate them. After finding Sonic as well, they head back to Knothole, where Sally forms the six of them into a new team, the Substitute Legion of Freedom Fighters, as a backup squad that can continue the fight against Robotnik if the Freedom Fighters are unable to.
Tumblr media
This is cute, but it does bring up an interesting point. Clearly, the Freedom Fighters are not always able to win their battles, and it's dire enough that Sally's started forming backup teams. It's not said directly that it's in case the main team dies or is roboticized or something, but we know that's a very real possibility in this war. Makes you wonder how this war was even fought when they were all tiny kids, and if something like this has ever happened before…
Knuckles Quest 2
Writer: Kent Taylor Pencils/Colors: Pat Spaziante
Well, no need to worry about that. Knuckles is at it again! This time, he's found his way to a strange cottage in the forest, and is set upon by a bunch of vicious mythical creatures, most of which he names off and mentions hearing in fairy tales. It's interesting, because as far as I'm aware, none of these are real-life mythical creatures, which means we're getting a tiny bit of lore and worldbuilding regarding the kinds of mythical creatures Mobian children are told about in this world.
Tumblr media
Anyway, Knuckles is totally confused about why he's fighting all these creatures that are supposed to not even exist, but eventually reasons that they indeed can't be real, and are magical projections. Once he announces this, they dissipate and he finds himself talking to an old fox wizard, who directs him to continue his search elsewhere. He then reveals that he used to serve the king in his youth, and that his name is…
Tumblr media
…Merlin Prower? Any Sonic fan worth their salt knows that Tails' real name is Miles Prower and that "Tails" is just a nickname, indicating that this strange wizard may be somehow related to Tails. Hmm, wonder if we'll ever hear any more of him…?

may favorites.
only two months late, i’m doing a little better. huh...
music.
‘vibe’ by 1TEAM. so remember when i said i was done with boy groups...well have you heard of 1TEAM. these boys are seriously the cutest, just look at them! and i love the vibe of this title track (pun intended). seriously it’s a jam and i would 10 out of 10 recommend listening to the b-side tracks as well! i appreciate that all the tracks have their own unique style, ‘countdown’ goes hard and is a great juxtaposition to the title track. i will definitely be keeping a eye out for these boys. (also they are very active on instagram and i appreciate that!)
Tumblr media
take off - the 1st mini album by wayV. finally the comeback we all deserve. this shall have it’s own post because seriously it deserves its own post. i am still processing the music video. like seriously as a winwin stan i have a lot to process. all the tracks are perfection! ‘let me love u’ makes me weep with all their sweet vocals. ‘say it’ honestly terrified me with the first 5 seconds reminding me of some slytherin ring tone. it’s such a great track! its dynamic and that build of the track, it’s great and that ‘oh na na na’. 11 out of 10 would recommend the album and the mv!
Tumblr media
WE ARE SUPERHUMAN - the 4th mini album by NCT127. so NCT has been ruling my time and energy ever since i had the opportunity to see them live (let’s be real they ruled my time prior hahaha). ‘highway to heaven’ is my jam and ill be that person to say it can rule as a title track. i loved the music video it’s simple, classic, and a vibe. i love these boys and every single song on the EP is a bop! i love these talented men, and seriously they never disappoint. i just have one question, do they have time to sleep?!?! like seriously, they’ve released the EP, have completed comeback stages, concerts, traveled north america. like what the even?! they deserve some sleep after all they have served us over the past two months!
Tumblr media
i’m the one by MXM. i have no idea where i first heard this song! but it is seriously a bop and i am obsessed with this track. it is light, fresh, and everything you need in a summer jam.
i remember: this mashup iconic!
youtube
her private life OSTs. seriously these tracks have been on repeat. thanks to this drama i was introduced to IN2IT again, and i have had ‘it’s u’ on repeat. also introduced to ONE, and ‘heyahe’ is a vibe. it was so unexpected to see that he was a rapper, to be honest i would have pegged him for a vocalist with his sweet face. ‘smile again’ by RUNY. like dang this is a bop and jam, i love listening to it just chilling at home cleaning. it’s great! ‘maybe’ by lee hae ri makes me weep, but in a good way. it’s just iconic and her vocals are beautiful.
dramas & movies. *spoilers alert*
a werewolf boy. this was a rewatch with my friends. we were struggling to pick a movie to watch and we decided upon this classic. everyone really enjoyed it, and i am glad they were able to see park bo-young as a young actress, because they just finished watching ‘strong woman do bong soon’.
Tumblr media
swing kids. this one i watched while on a plane ride! it is seriously not what i expected, it was a historical film that took place in a pow camp. it was a lot to process, and probably wasn't a great idea to watch on a plane with hundred other people, because i ended up weeping like a baby. but all is well and the film was incredible. i wanted a happy ending but about five minutes in i realized whatever was coming my way was probably going to be at best bittersweet. i would recommend watching this one, it was a spectacular film that touched upon various issues, and hardships that many people faced at the end of the war. kyungsoo is the reason i have been keeping an out for this film, but it was an incredible film in it’s own right, and i’m not just saying that because my bias of EXO was a part of the film. the cast as a whole did a wonderful job conveying the struggles and emotions felt. i would 10 out of 10 recommend.
side note: i just heard word that our boy kyungsoo will be off for military enlistment in july. what a great way to end the month, thank you to sm for the super last minute notification. it’s fine no emotional breakdowns were had here TT. i just hope that he stays healthy and does his best. i will be patiently awaiting his return.
Tumblr media
her private life. this one. y’all this drama. seriously insert *slow clap and standing ovation*. i loved everything about this drama our main leads stayed my existance with their story. our boy ONE burst out a new bias and someone who needs to release more music, like please and thank you (still waiting for a random OST to appear). i love me a classic drama with flashbacks to childhood, and friendships that are unexpected. i loved how he found her fan-girl side endearing, and i desperately need that in my life. and hello, ryan gold is extremely dreamy and we all need a ‘lion’ in our life, am i right?! i would recommend it 9.5 out of 10!
Tumblr media
my only complaint is that i wish that shi-an found out that deok-mi was his fansite. that would have been the most precious moment of the whole show i can guarantee that!
Tumblr media
he is psychometric. of course i had to watch this one, our jin-young made his official male lead debut. it was really good, and kinda dark, lots of mystery. i appreciate a good drama that ties in long lost childhood memories, that reconnect our otp. it was pretty great, and i did not expect his hyung to have committed the horrible act that he did. very unexpected and wrecked my heart because *heart eyes* and i wanted him to be a good guy. i would recommend it 8 out of 10.
Tumblr media
radio romance. this was a super cute one, and a kind of ‘oh i have no other dramas to watch since i am watching all live dramas’ kind of pick. but oh how thankful i am to have stumbled upon this gem. the main actor was also in ‘splash splash’ love and i am falling more in love with him like seriously. i appreciated the flash backs as always a classic, they knew each other as children story. i love how she really became an oasis for him to get to know himself and grow as an individual to find his own voice. it was a good one, i would recommend it for a cute drama! and all the pretty bows are at the end, even the second female leads gets her boo! i would give it an 8 out of 10.
Tumblr media
i hate you juliet. watched this one on a whim because it was on the viki discover page, but i actually don’t recall much from it sadly. the episodes were short, and if it had been longer i don’t know if i would have finished it. super predictable but i don’t know how the main leads ended up together i was totally team joon mo.
Tumblr media
love o2o. another chinese drama, who am i? this is seriously a great drama, and i loved the concept of her being a gamer, and how they met in that avenue before ever meeting in real life. they were super cute, and he is super attractive. of course they encounter all the hardships that a major-rich-hot-senior in college-entrepreneur  would encounter when in a relationship with the cute-poorish-girl from a small city. but it was great, a lot predictable, but everything you want for a cute summer rom-com drama. i would 8 out of 10 recommend.
Tumblr media
so many relatable moments. i had to include this precious gif!

Kiwi-Le-Survivant’s Best Games of 2017 Post
I bought a PS4 this year, which means I was actually able to play five new games this year. It’s my hope that people will actually enjoy reading my thoughts, and soon I’ll be able to rival The Game Awards and announced Halo 6 or something right in the middle of my posts. Let’s jump right in.
Top 5 Best Games I Played That Came Out In 2017:
5. Tekken 7 - You know, I think I prefer Tekken to Street Fighter now. Although that might be a combination of me being slightly better at the former, coupled with Capcom having no idea what they’re doing lately. As shallow as it sounds, I think a big reason I love this game so much is the novelty of both a Capcom and an SNK character guest starring in a Tekken game.
Not as big on Noctis, though. I was hoping for either Kazuma Kiryu, or another fighting game rep. Although I guess you could argue Noctis represents Dissidia.
It’s at the bottom because the other games are so good. I hope they keep adding more content beyond what’s already planned.
4. Danganronpa v3: Killing Harmony - Apparently opinions on this game are mixed among DR fans, mainly related to the ending. Personally, I liked the ending, and I feel the rest of the game is pretty much in line with the first two in terms of quality. I’m a fan of the new mechanics, like Debate Scrum and Psyche Taxi. The soundtrack is really good, too. I think everyone can at least agree this is a memorable game.
3. Yakuza 0 - I haven’t finished this one yet, but I’m told it’s a fantastic entry point if you want to get into this series. This is one of the few games I can think of where I actually willingly did sidequests, because a lot of them are actually funny, and even heartwarming.
2. Persona 5 - My most anticipated game of 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017. I’m a big fan of Persona 3 and 4, and I feel this game is just as good, if not better. I greatly prefer the Tokyo setting to the rural setting of Persona 4.
From the art style, to the setting and music, P5 oozes style out of every orifice. In fact, you could make a case for it being one of the most stylish games of all time. I thought for sure it would be number one, but one game managed to top it.
1. NieR: Automata - I heard this game actually sold really well, and that’s great news. Imagine telling someone that the sequel to NieR would outsell the newest Mass Effect. It’s amazing what an extra layer of polish and removing or altering some of the more tedious aspects of the first game can do.
Honestly, I’m bad at explaining why the game is good. Just play it. I genuinely believe it will go down as one of the greatest JRPGs of all time, and that Yoko Taro can and should be thought of as the next Kojima. If you dismiss it as a Metal Gear Rising/Final Fantasy rip-off that relies on fan service, well, your loss.
Did I mention that both NieR games have strong contenders for best video game soundtracks of all time? It’s true.
This is pretty long, so I’ll include the rest of the awards under the read more.
Top 5 Best Games I Played That Came Out Other Years:
5. Kid Icarus: Uprising - I haven’t played this as much as I’d like, but I’ve greatly enjoyed what I have played. I don’t even really mind the controls, really. I haven’t used the stand yet.
4. Gravity Rush - I started playing this game a few weeks ago, and I already love it. Kat is one of the most likable protagonists I can think of. She should be Sony’s mascot. In all honesty, this is one of the most fun open world games I’ve played. The only thing I’d say is lacking is the combat, but it’s manageable.
3. Va11 Hall-A: Cyberpunk Bartender Action - A game about mixing drinks and talking to people, while trying to save enough money to avoid getting evicted. There are multiple endings, too. The one I got really got to me.
2. NieR - I’d hate to say it, but for the longest time, the only thing I saw related to the game was the Zero Punctuation review, and I wrote it off as generic based on that. Thankfully, a few friends heavily recommended it, and since Platinum were doing the sequel, I figured “alright, I’ll check it out.” It turns out, generic is probably the worst word to describe NieR, and Yahtzee is an idiot.
NieR is a rough diamond, similar to Persona 3, or the original Yakuza. A game that has more than its share of flaws, but its originality makes up for them. The gameplay is, well, it’s no Bayonetta. It’s not even DMC1, but it’s there to serve the story and characters, which I found myself getting attached to.
I’d recommend playing this before Automata, if you have a say, but it’s not 100% necessary, and Square Enix could have made that option easier, so it’s up to you.
Check out @thathomestar‘s post about it, too.
1. Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc - I knew of this series by reputation, and it seemed like the fanbase overlapped a lot with other things I was a fan of, but I got spoiled on who the lead villain turns out to be years before I played it, and I thought some of the character designs looked unappealing, so I wasn’t sure how much I’d enjoy it.
It turned out, I enjoyed it a lot. It scratches the same itch as Ace Attorney for me. I like the characters a lot more now that I actually know more about them. Funny how that works. Except Hifumi. He looks awful, and is awful.
The second one is probably better in many ways (especially the protagonist), but I feel the first game has a certain humility to it. I get the sense that the developers didn’t think it would take off as much as it did, and some of the rough patches kind of add to its charm. I also think the ending was originally planned to be more ambiguous.
Also, I made at least one friend while playing this game. That’s a plus.
Top 5 Games I Want To Play But Never Got Around To:
5. Cuphead - I felt kind of bad for not having any western games on the last two lists, so here we go. Cuphead looks pretty fun, and I really respect how much effort and creativity went into the game’s visuals. It reminds me a bit of Skullgirls. Sadly, I don’t have an Xbox One, and I doubt my PC could handle it.
4. Sonic Mania - Like Cuphead, this is another labour of love. It was really nice to see people being positive about Sonic again for a few months. Then Sonic Forces came out, but oh well. In a similar vein, I’m also interested in the Crash N-Sane Trilogy, but since Sonic Mania is a new game, it gets the edge.
3. Super Mario Odyssey - Looks really fun. I’ve never played either the Galaxy games or 3D World, but from an outside perspective, Galaxy and Odyssey look like a lot more appealing to me than 3D World. Sadly, I don’t have a Switch.
2. NioH - I suck at Souls games, to be honest, but I find this game’s concept very interesting. I think I’d be into in a Souls game where I can play as an actual character, and not just a blank slate.
1. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - Nintendo has impressed me this year. I think this is the first time a 3D Zelda game and a 3D Mario game have come out the same year. I like this game’s art style, and I’m told it’s a breath of fresh air to a formula that was getting stale. However, no Switch, and no Wii U, either.
Top 5 Most Anticipated Games of Next Year:
5. Kingdom Hearts III - Yup. This is definitely coming out next year. Always bet on Sora.
4. Red Dead Redemption II - I was kind of burnt out on open world games, but if this is even half as good as the original, it’s pretty damn excellent.
3. Dragon Ball FighterZ - I loved Dragon Ball Z as a kid, and if this game came out when I was a kid, I would probably say “holy shit!” and also “who’s Beerus?” I think this has the potential to make Arc System Works a big name with mainstream audiences. Then maybe we can get a Persona 5 Arena with graphics like this.
2. Yakuza/Hokuto no Ken thing - I never read much Hokuto no Ken, but this looks amazing. Right up my alley.
1. Soulcalibur VI - I just really love fighting games, man. There arguably hasn’t been a great Soulcalibur game since SCII, in 2003 (2002 if you only count the arcade release), so I’d love to see this series make a comeback. Put Cassandra in it.
If Devil May Cry V were announced, it would automatically be at the top of the list, but sadly, no. As for Bayonetta 3, I don’t think it’s coming out next year. With that said, while I don’t have a Switch, Bayonetta 3 is potentially a system seller for me.

Everything Fades - Chapter VII
A Jungkook story inspired by Kimi no Na wa

Chapter VII – In Which I (Attempt to) Survive
I sigh for the 32nd time, as some woman cakes my face with makeup. I’ve been sitting here for a solid hour... I can understand makeup is important when you’re seen through the severe gaze of a camera that costs as much as my university tuition, but Jeon Jungkook is already in the top 1% of human beings, in terms of beauty, so I feel some reluctance about this endeavour.
“Noona,” I murmur. “Is it over soon?”
“Jungkook-ah, you’re so impatient today,” the woman answers with a disapproving look.
I give her puppy-eyes, and her features soften.
“We just need to add some final touches to your eyes, alright?”
“Ahhh,” I let out. “Alright.”
In the face of the free time before me, my mind once again wanders away.
I’ve started to get a tiny, tiny bit used to possessing Jeon Jungkook… And by that, I mean that I only internally faint each time I see a member or my own reflection, instead of literally falling to the ground…
When I woke up from my last trance, Jungkook had left me a message…
Getting a message from Jeon Jungkook…
It’s-
I can’t-
The other members have spoken to me… but not really to me, you know. They just talked to their friend, and I so happened to be inhabiting his body at the time.
Jungkook actually spoke to me.
Which is just…
aaaaAAHHHHH.
I know I’ve been… well, him, so it shouldn’t be that exciting.
But it is.
There’s this thing about being a fangirl… You love unironically, with all your soul, and you’re profoundly glad for the very existence of those people who have overtaken your heart. Some may think you’re just obsessed and weird, and maybe you are, in a way, but being a fangirl is so much more than that… It’s loving without expecting anything in return. It’s praying your love can somehow reach the subject of your attention. It’s hoping that they’re taking care of themselves, and hurting we you realize they probably aren’t. It’s smiling when they’re happy and crying when they’re sad. It’s strange and intense, and it can’t really be explained to one who hasn’t felt it before.
I love BTS with every fiber of my body…
But sometimes I’m scared of how much I love them.
Sometimes I doubt my life choices. I resent this industry that hurts the very people I claim I would die for. I feel pathetic for investing so much time and energy on strangers that will never know my name.
And then, I’ll stumble upon a video of Sope being silly, or a gif of smiling maknae line, and it’ll plaster a smile on my face.
I’ll let go of my doubts, because despite everything, these 7 boys have made my life so much brighter, and I’ll never be able to stop loving them.
That’s why Jungkook talking to me is a big deal.
He noticed me.
Well, he didn’t really have a choice, mind you, but still…
I let out a sigh.
“Jungkook-ah,” the make-up lady says gently. “We’re done with you. You can follow the PD-nim to the photoshoot set.”
“Oh,” I say, falling back into reality. “Right, thank you,” I add with a bow.
I spot the producer in the back and walk to him, not without greeting him in a clear voice (my sketchy knowledge of Korean culture finally serves me). I follow him through a few corridors, and we arrive to the setting.
“Wahh,” I murmur to myself, stretching my neck as if it could increase my field of vision.
I’m surrounded by odd, mesmerizing props, the kind that would be crowned “aesthetic af” by the common Tumblr user.
“Not sure what this concept it, but I like it,” I think.
Hoseok, Namjoon and Taehyung are already there, and I feel like Jungkook would walk to them in… normal conditions. My heart pounds hard as I approach them, but, still, I muster my courage.
“Hey,” I say in a strangled voice.
“Why.”
“They say we’ll be starting in 10 minutes,” Namjoon informs me as I clear my throat.
I nod. “Okay.”
“You don’t have your music with you?” Taehyung asks.
“Wh-what?”
“Well,” he continues, and a part of my brain can’t help but notice how deep and melodious his voice sounds. “You usually have your music with you,” he says, and, seeing my puzzled expression, he goes on. “Y’know, with your cellphone...”
“Ah…” I let out softly. “Uh… It didn’t charge last night. I... didn’t plug it properly.”
“Oh,” he says, shrugging.
Honestly, from that point on, all I do is try to keep myself from panicking.
“It’s gonna be okay,” I attempt to tell myself, but despite my best efforts, the thoughts that have cluttered my mind resurface for the umpteenth time. “No, no it’s not. I don’t know Jungkook’s little habits, and BTS knows him as well as they know themselves… I’m not familiar with everything he does on camera, and there’s everything that happens off it… He’s a complex, full-fledge human being. How am I supposed to do this? I’ll make a mistake I can’t take back somewhere along the way. There’s no way I can keep this masquerade up.”
Without my realizing, the missing members have all showed up. I must bare a rather dark expression, because as soon as Yoongi arrives, he puts a hand on my arm, frowning.
“Jungkook-ah, what are you thinking about?”
“M-me?”
He takes my answer silently, eyes tight.
“Hum,” I attempt. “I… I’m a bit stressed out... about…”
He stares at me enquiringly.
“About the…” I continue, frantically searching for a decent answer. “The next comeback,” I finally say, as quietly as possible.
My reply seems to have pleased him, becaseu most of the uneasiness clouding Yoongi’s face dissipates.
“Don’t worry too much…” he says, giving my arm a reassuring squeeze. “It won’t do you any good.”
I force a smile. “You’re right, hyung.”
A man in a fancy suit comes forward, and I greet him along the other members. We follow him.
I do as I’m told, but I’m expected to know how things work. “Wut.” is the most common thing that pops into my mind, in the next couple hours. There’s a lot of looking around, trying to imitate the others, searching for where the hell I’m supposed to look...
I’m not sure how I do it (maybe by virtue of my primitive tendency to adapt quickly, seeking survival, or perhaps thanks to some residue of Jungkook inside this body), but I manage to get through the photoshoot.
I’m told I have vocal training in an hour. I go and I survive – scarcely, but I do.
“I’ll need to study more.”
I get home. Jin tells me to come eat take-out chicken with the rest of the present members.
“The only thing I need to do,” I think, studying the members’ faces, “is not fuck up too badly.”
The day wasn’t too bad, really. I almost feel at peace.
“Oh,” Jin says. “You should go wash-up, Jungkook-ah.”
“…”
“Hear me, JK?” my silence prompts him to ask.
A sinful image of the sweet baby bunny appears into my mind, and every optimistic thought I’ve had until now is shattered.
“Fuck me. Fuck my life. Fuck everything.”

Broduce 101: Episode 8 First Half (Quick Livestream Recap)
Since I missed the first half of the livestream, here’s a quick recap off the raw. I’ll link this to the second half recap too.
Before elimination heartbreaks, they’d served some fanservice to numb the pain with a bit from when BoA came to visit before position evals.
She brought them pizza! The boys had a collective breakdown of food appreciation, and we see a brilliantly photoshopped press picture of BoA holding up pizzas like an angel, like Kim Youjin clearly imagines.
Jung Jung, at the brink of tears: WHY IS IT SO DELICIOUS
They’re just happy to be around her, which is fully understandable. She does a little happy dance as they chant for her, and mingles with the trainees (there’s a nice shot of the Amazing Kiss group talking to her) before leaving them to their food.
Sidenote: the cameras always catch Noh Taehyun in the background, and he’s always unintentionally pulling the ugliest faces possible, unaware he’s in the shot.
Cube Chick Yoo Seonho is by far the happiest, putting away as much pizza as he could to compensate for only getting three meals a day at dorms. He’s obviously at that age where you eat everything in sight, it reminds me of my brother.
Cut to eliminations day and shots of tears. Okay, the warm and fuzzies have disappeared.
The trainees all do their entrance into the Ceremony Hall of Crowned Chairs.
Kim Donghan did a move from Shape of You, then a heart and wink combo.
Starship boys did something weird, ofc
Brand New trainees did the point choreo from Twice’s comeback song, Signal. Cute.
My man Ong-ssi transitioned from a very stiff and formal bow to his high note meme face from Get Ugly
FNC Yoo Hwiseung did his lip-swipe
Cube chicks, whose backstage hwaiting needed to be redone three times for them to be in sync, did the Shugo Chara frame.
Pledis’ Nu’est boys did hearts and more Twice references.
Hashtag that Twice relevancy
Bae Jinyoung did the ear flapping move too
So did Maroo Park Jihoon. I suddenly miss Kwon Hyeob, seeing him up there alone.
ONO Moonbok, who looked ridiculously pretty btw - I hope they stick to styling him like this, did something that looked like Red Velvet’s Rookie or Lovelyz’s WoW, and held up his lovely hair in two pigtails. Adorable. The trainees were KO’d
Star Empire Takada Kenta looks more like a puppy than ever.
The Yuehua kids shot hearts and Ahn Hyungseob acted like he got hit by one
S.How trainees used their minimal screentime references - Namhyung did his finger to the lip with elevated pinky detail that had impressed Lee Seokhoon, while Dongsu did the plucking from the air bit from the Amazing Kiss stage.
MMO trainees, extra as always, integrated Auntie Jisung’s clapping move with Twice’s Signal.
Baby maknae Lee Woojin did his meme face and finger heart from the Be Mine stage. A worldwide cutie.
C2K Kim Seonglee did finger hearts with the Very Very Very head bobbing
YGK+ Kwon Hyunbin tried a headstand before just rolling over like a cat in a blanket
Real Performers Ardor and Able Noh Taehyun and Ha Sungwoon did a finger point choreo before moonwalking off the stage in sync
RBW puppies referenced fallen trainee Dongmyung by doing his warm up flapping dance and hearts.
Protect Them.
Tension building and then cut to concept evaluation song distributions.
They keep playing up the fact that Jihoon dropped ranks...are they egging the fangirls to have a flatout fight?
This way of arranging missions, with distributing trainees into teams and then shuffling after half of them leave is stupid and could be avoided if they split up the mission footage better. The show could fully have filler episodes between missions at this level of popularity so the vote timing and mission preparation could be allocated efficiently.
Imagine working at a song and then having to start over a few days later. It’s ridiculous.
Songs are introduced by their producers. The viewers have been voting to match the songs to their favourite trainees for this mission.
I’d said earlier that the idea was just going to incite some kind of fuckery, with fans not used to this amount of legitimate power. Sure enough, there was cheating involved so Kang Daniel, Lee Kiwon and Kim Dongbin were banned from their leaked song preferences.
Honestly, the cat emoji morse code was great. It’s one of my top controversies this season.
First up is my personal favourite of the song concepts, I Know You Know, produced by heavyweight producer Joombas (who is famously responsible for Exo’s Growl, SHINee’s Dream Girl and also apparently worked with HOTSHOT). I’m all about the funky R&Bish vibe: not the kind of song that tops charts, but probably stays there a while. Watch this song be ignored though lol
Second is Oh Little Girl, a name even the producer draws quote marks around. This is the song for the hip-hop concept, and has a jazzy easy listening feel.
Next is Showtime, coming from a trio of newer or less popular producers. This seems catchy, but it sounds very familiar - not a song I’d remember. The choreo looks fun though, and they reference Dongmyung’s warm up! The trainees love it, cracking up as they mimic the move.
Fourth are another famous producer group, Devine Channel, who I believe do a lot of SM’s songs. They’ve also done a lot of very trendy title songs, including BTS’ Fire and VIXX’s The Closer. I think the English title for this song is Open? Correct me if I’m wrong. It sounds great, oddly like something I might have heard from Nu’est. I’m looking forward to this too, the choreo looks great.
Fifth song is from the producers that get the most hype, Hyuna’s new charity project from Cube, Triple H’s Never. Auntie Jisung decides he wants the song because Hyuna is involved, which, honestly, same. The EDM structure also feels overdone but I have a sneaking suspicion this is going to be the song that gets maximum hype since there’s no ballad.
Trainees get allocated their songs in envelopes and have to go to wait in separate practice spaces for the rest of their team.
Jaehwan doesn’t want to be in same team as Hyunbin, which I understand, considering that he’s had to carry him twice already. Like the other trainees, he wants to work with GodJonghyun.
Pretty boys Bae Jinyoung, Park Jihoon and Ahn Hyungseob get sorted together. Maybe their fans have been working in sync. They also get excited puppy Gunhee, which means their vocals will be taken care of.
Once the trainees all gather, their songs are revealed. Byun Hyunmin decides to rip the sticker for his room and accidentally pulls off the whole thing.
Byun Hyunmin: :O
Noh Taehyun: Everyone, we’re not singing.
Hyunmin retries.
All the trainees: cAREFULLY
The group gets Showtime, which was Samuel’s pick. He’s ecstatic.
Minhyun’s room has their sticker peel by Emperor Hwang to reveal Never, which pleases most of them.
Park Jihoon’s room has a breakdown before Dongbin peels the sticker to show Oh Little Girl, a song I can see Sewoon do well in. The Yuehua trainees are all in this team too.
Moonbok has a braid in his lovely hair this segment, it looks fire emoji.
Hyunbin’s room has I Know You Know. Taedong, who has a lower range than the song needs, is nervous.
Baekho’s group gets Open, which most of the trainees are excited about. Seunglee in particular is relieved, since it was one of his picks.
We go into centre struggles for the killing part.
Oh Little Girl has Jihoon battling Euiwoong and Minki. They all demonstrate, and vote Jihoon and Minki as their preferred centres.
Euiwoong is getting worried. He’s one of the only initial popular trainees that seems to be dropping down ranks every week. Kahi gives him a much needed confidence boost at dance check in, and Don Mills praises him at vocal check in too.
Product placement break.
Open team wants a dance focus trainee as leader because of the high level choreo and elect Daniel, who now probably understands what he needs to do to lead his group after faltering last mission.
But the team has so many people that they split into two halves while leaning choreo and one team falls behind since Daniel doesn’t split his attention between the two initially
Kahi calls them out on the distinction, with one group lagging while the first one does great. The second half, which has Park Sungwoo, who we know needs a lot of focused help, starts to catch up after the whole team gets scolded.
There are so many trainees in this team that won’t survive eliminations, oh god.
Kim Seunglee, you deserve better.
Showtime group has a lot of strong singers. Woodam wants to be main vocal, and Yoo Hwiseung needs that vocal hype boost since his rank is risky too.
Auntie Jisung: I want to try to do it too.
They start talking about the need for facial expressions and singing, Samuel wants to lowkey be centre. They need to have impact to bring the concept across, they decide.
Auntie Jisung: I still want to try though!
They ask the trainees to sing and do some face expression to pick centre and main vocal. Jisung and Samuel share centre while Woodam and Hwiseung share main vocal.
Coach Shin Yumi likes Hwiseung’s control over the notes better. He’s a lot more stable than Woodam, maybe because his natural tone is stronger?
Yoo Hwiseung gets some screentime for the first time.
Far out, Mnet. You really annoy me.
Never team has Ha Sungwoon being worried about being in a team with high ranking trainees, most of who want to be centre.
They all battle with facial expressions but the trainees vote for Guanlin and Minhyun as centre.
At dance check in with Dabbing Ajusshi Kwon Jaesung, however, Sungwoon is the first one to volunteer to dance.
He gets some well deserved praise for it, which honestly, the kid needs. Being in a group of trainees that are all popular is awful enough, but he’s a true all rounder. Without enough screentime or helpful editing, he’s been fading despite being good looking and a consistent performer.
More product placement.
I Know You Know team has the underdog feel straight up, with the lower ranking trainees. I called the song as not being the kind to be popular.
Appealing time for the centre spot. RBW Hwanwoong stands out. Ah, my heart. Donghan and Hwanwoong get centre.
Dance check in with Kahi has her appreciating their hard work. Hyunbin’s dancing seems to have improved, I guess being cyber bullied has that effect on you. She also thinks Hwanwoong is a good centre choice, which is some well deserved praise.
Tears and mournful instrumentals are abound as the low ranking trainees recount their experience before for upcoming eliminations. We get flashbacks for some of them, which should prepare you for what’s coming.
We all know where this is heading. The rest of the recap can be found here.

The Future of the Trainees (part 10)
Spring Day
Yoo Seonho (Rank 15 -> Rank 11)
Chances – I like both Cube chicks, it’s pretty hard not to, they’re so damn likeable. But just like with Guanlin I don’t really want Seonho to make the final group (I will be supportive is he does). Unlike Guanlin he’s not a shoo-in. The 6th episode was the first time Seonho ranked within the Top 11 and I doubt that he will be able to keep that position. Firstly, I think that people for the most part understand that the Cube trainees require more training so only one has a chance of making it in which it seems like it will be Guanlin. Secondly, Seonho did a great job in the ‘Spring Day’ performance. The parts that were given to him were, for a lack of better word, doable for him and he sounded wonderful. I also appreciate his piano skills (moreso from all the BTS videos). But most people will agree that him getting the first place in his group and more points than Jaehwan for instance was a little undeserving. Is it his fault? Obviously not. Did he still do a great job? Yes. It’s hard to say things like ‘someone didn’t deserve something’ because it sounds like an attack on said person. But I really don’t mean to insult Seonho. He did an amazing job and I appreciate his growth as a vocalist, his hard work, his humility. And I don’t think that viewers really blame Seonho for it, but most of them do mention their own picks for first place in the ‘Spring Day’ group. So I think his ranking might fall a little. He’ll definitely make it into the Top 22 though. I’m actually super excited for Cube’s two possible new groups – a girl group with Jeon Soyeon and a boy group with Guanlin and Seonho. On a sidenote, Guanlin and Seonho have a very cute friendship for people who’ve only known each other for 6 months. I would guess that having realized he’s probably going to make it, Guanlin really hopes that so will Seonho.
Skills – From the first ranking performance I’d say Seonho is a better dancer than Guanlin. Still not good although he did just fine in his ‘Sorry Sorry’ performance due to the dance being quite simple for the most part. I’ll have to see how he does I the Concept Evaluation. His vocals are nice and stable when you give him parts that he can actually sing. But it’s what you expect from a young trainee of 6 months who’s probably been accepted into the company based on future potential rather than current skills.
Bae Jinyoung (Rank 12 -> Rank 14)
Chances – Here’s a trainee who really gained a lot of attention in the last episode. Before he was seen as a visual who’s not so skilled. Now people seem to think that he has bothe the looks and the skills (I will talk about his skills in its subsection). He wasn’t actually the focus of the his group’s practice but Mnet made sure to add scenes that have trainers and other trainees positively reacting to him so I would guess that Mnet actually wants Jinyoung to make it into the final group which they didn’t have to worry about until recently when he started falling in ranks. Honestly, I didn’t find Jinyoung super good-looking mainly because I don’t really understand what a small face is even after 5 years of listening to kpop. So he wasn’t really on my radar. But out of the F4 (part of B1F4) Jinyoung was actually my favorite pick because I actually though he had enough skills but just lacked confidence. And I appreciate people trying their best at something that doesn’t come naturally to them. I also think he has gained a bit of confidence since the start of the show so that’s nice to see. So if Mnet really pushes him (as I think they want to) he could make it into the final lineup. Otherwise, he’s just passing the two next eliminations and ending up in the Top 12. Also, fun fact – his company C( is the label Cheetah is signed to. Do with that what you please.
Skills – Before episode 7 I thought that he was a pretty good dancer and a decent vocalist. After the 7th episode I grew to appreciate his vocals a lot more. Now whether he’s a good singer has been a pretty divisive topic. Some loved him, some thought he sounded horrible. I personally really liked his vocals, especially his bridge part in ‘Spring Day’ which I think most people will admit sounded amazing. However, I did notice that during his part in the chorus he sounded very strained and out-of-breath despite standing in one spot. That doesn’t really make me think that he’s a terrible singer. Rather, I understand why he got one line in ‘Boy in Luv’ – he wouldn’t have been able to sing while dancing. It’s a problem that needs to be fixed and while I’m no vocal coach I think that shouldn’t be too hard. Another issue is his confidence o stage but that has been getting better with each performance so I’m excited to see how he does in the concept evaluation.
Lee Woojin (Rank 18 -> Rank 22)
Chances – I knew from the start that despite Woojin being very talented and extremely loved by all the viewers he wasn’t going to make it into the final group. I do hate that. Since he’s already a contestant he should have a chance to make it into the final group. But he’s just so young and he looks like he’s very young. If you compare him to Samuel it’s hard to believe that they’re only a year apart. Though to be fair, a year or so ago in a show with Seventeen Samuel also looked like a baby. So maybe people just mature between 15 and 16. But either way it’s just hard to imagine him in the same group as the older-looking trainees who are going to make it into the group (Daniel, for example). And his voice hasn’t broken yet – it’s most likely going to break during the time that B.O.I is going to be promoting which will rid Woojin of the main vocal status he has had so far. I think most audiences have agreed with this because while he’s always pretty high in the ranking, he hasn’t really been anywhere near the Top 11. So he’ll probably go as far as the Top 22. Thankfully, his future isn’t uncertain because despite being the youngest trainee on the show, he has already debuted with a group called The East Light (check them out – they’ve recently had a comeback and just like their debut song the new one is amazing, they also post great covers). I hope at least that he’s still part of it because that’s a great group where he also fits in perfectly because all of the members are quite young.
Skills – He is very talented especially for his age. While his voice obviously sticks out like a sore thumb in every performance on ‘Produce 101’, he always sounds absolutely beautiful so it doesn’t really matter. He made a mistake in the ‘Spring Day’ performance and the only thing that bothers me is why did they even leave the high note in if Woojin had so much trouble with it. The vocal trainers really should’ve said something. Its absence wouldn’t have ruined the performance. I’m glad no one is really blaming Woojin for it. His dancing ability is pretty good too – he can always keep up with the others.
Takada Kenta (rank 28 -> 24)
Chances – I’m going to assume that Mnet doesn’t want him in the group based on the fact that he barely gets any screentime (although he was shown to have moved up to B) despite being the center in the last mission and the leader in this one. Honestly, Kenta received quite a lot of attention from the fans right from the start. And I assumed that it was because he was the sole Japanese trainee this season. And while I definitely see the hardships that foreign trainees have compared to the Korean ones, it didn’t really endear Kenta to me. But after watching the cut ranking performances I was blown away. It was my favorite solo performance along with Samuel’s. So many other trainees who came alone chose the weirdest songs that just don’t work as solo pieces. But Kenta was actually really smart – he chose a solo piece that’s not really energetic (it’s hard to compare in energy to all the group performances when you’re performing alone) and is pretty hard. I wouldn’t say that he was perfect but he did great overall. And he’s been doing great ever since. I’m going to also assume that it wasn’t hard to be a leader in the ‘Spring Day’ team because Woojin, Seonho and Jinyoung are pretty young, Seonho hasn’t been a trainee for long, Jinyoung isn’t as confident as one might hope and Yongjin is initially a rapper. This group could’ve potentially had a lot of problems and I’m choosing to think that the fact that they didn’t is thanks to their leader. I’d actually really like for him to make it into the final group because he’s very talented and I’m very unsure about his future. But as it is he’s definitely making it into the Top 35 but he’ll need a little boost from Mnet (unlikely) if he wants to make it into the Top 22.
Skills – He’s so well-rounded. Good singer (I would’ve actually given 1st place to him in the ‘Spring Day’ team), good dancer, did pretty well as a rapper. I hope he gets to shine during the concept evaluation.
Kim Yongjin (Rank 53 -> Rank 53)
Chances – I really do feel bad for him because he got a lot of unnecessary hate for picking the last vocal position which would’ve been Woodam’s otherwise. Especially unfair because Yongjin wanted to do rap instead but couldn’t partially due to two vocalists (Gwanghyun and Donghyun) choosing Rap over Vocal. So Woodam wouldn’t have gotten his desired position either way. The Yongjin vs. everyone’s favorite Woojin for main vocal problem didn’t help. Honestly speaking, the main vocal part didn’t suit Yongjin at all but because it’s been engraved into everyone’s mind that being center is important I understand why he wanted to fight for it, especially with the realization that this is probably his last performance. Which it probably is. He’s passed the last elimination thanks to his heart-breaking story but its effects have worn off. He got some focus in the last episode but it was aired to serve Woojin’s story so it’s unlikely to boost him in ranks.
Skills – Honestly, his ranking performance was kind of cringey but skill-wise it wasn’t bad. I also loved his energy and stage presence. He did not give a fuck what people thought of his performance. He knew it was great and he had fun on stage and that’s really admirable and something not many trainees managed to achieve. He’s a decent rapper and decent dancer. And when given parts in his range he’s a good vocalist. He really didn’t sound good as the main vocal but his singing was very nice and stable when given the parts that he got in the end.

What I Thought About “Together Again” from Adventure Time: Distant Lands
Salutations, random people on the internet who certainly won’t read this! I am an Ordinary Schmuck. I write stories and reviews and draw comics and cartoons.
When Cartoon Network/HBOmax announced Adventure Time: Distant Lands, there were only two of the four specials that got my attention. There was "Obsidian" for the undeniable factor of sweet, sweet Bubbline content and "Together Again," which marks the return of Finn and Jake. And honestly, it was hard to tell which one had me the most excited.
Don't get me wrong, I'm all for seeing two gals being much more than pals, but there has always been something about Finn and Jake that I just adore. Their brotherly dynamic is as endearing as it was realistic, and I couldn't help but smile whenever I saw them goofing around in the original series. So, seeing one last adventure between the two of them is an idea that I'm all for. After watching it a second time...yeah, it was everything I could have ever hoped for and much, much more.
Unfortunately, to explain why means that I'll have to go into spoilers. So, this is your last chance to watch "Together Again" if you haven't already. It is a heartbreaking yet funny special that requires an in-depth look to suitably explain why "Together Again" is the perfect send-off for Adventure Time: Distant Lands, as well as a much better end to Adventure Time as a whole...Yeah, I know it's not actually the end. But it's so clearly meant to be the end, and I will treat it as such because of it.
So shut your pieholes.
WHAT I LIKE
Return of the original intro: This makes sense for a story and for an ending (shut your pieholes).
Narratively speaking, it adds to making it clear that it's Finn and Jake's adventure. They're the only two characters mentioned in the theme song, and they're also the ones who prominently take the spotlight in the special. It makes sense to play this theme song one last time.
This also makes sense for why it works for a finale (shut your pieholes). If this really was meant to be the end of Adventure Time as a whole, why wouldn't they play the theme song one last time? Dozens of fans everywhere have memorized every frame of that intro, and I feel like they would feel cheated if they don't watch it play out for the final episode (shut your pieholes). And, c'mon. You had to admit that your poor, little nostalgic heart didn't feel something when seeing it again. It's a sweet moment that adds to the episode while still appealing to fans in the most subtle ways.
Finn and “Jake’s” little adventure: This was a ton of fun to watch. As I said, it's endearing to see Finn and Jake act as the bestest of bros, and it just felt nice seeing a classic F and J adventure again, even if the real Jake isn't present. Although, on the one hand, a part of me wishes it wasn't too obvious that it was just Finn going through an illusion and played more into the idea that it's a flashback with only subtle hints that it isn't. Because the second they showed Gumbald as a snow golem, it is clear from the getgo that this wasn't one of their past adventures. But, on the other hand, we still get some solid foreshadowing with the fifty-flavor ice cream, on top of really stellar performances from John DiMaggio and Jeremy Shada as Finn is forced to see Jake die a second time. Seriously, that hit HARD as it not only sets the tone of the special but also perfectly explains Finn's motivation. Speaking of Finn...
Finn: The first thing I want to get out of the way is that Finn is, like, eighty or something years old in this special. It's easy to forget, given how he looks like his young (or rather, identifiable) self throughout most of the whole thing, but it's true. The Finn we see is one from the far off future of the series. And I'm gonna level with you, it is all kinds of pleasant to know that he hasn't changed a bit with old age.
The second he believes to be trapped in a dungeon, he wastes no time trying to get out while also saving those he thinks are trapped with him. When he realizes he's actually dead, Finn almost instantly looks at the bright side with the fact that he gets to see Jake again. Then after finding out the afterlife is being run by some buttface, Finn takes a break from finding Jake to kick New Death's a new one. And even once finding out how bad things are, Finn does everything he can to teach New Death a lesson. It's that last part that gets to me the most because it's the idea that even in death, Finn still finds a way to serve justice. Which makes way too much sense.
Plus, going back to what I said earlier, Finn's motivation is set in stone from that fake adventure he went on. Even if his actions come across as selfish, you understand why. Look at how devastated Finn was after thinking he saw Jake die again. It's clear that his brother's death heavily affected our boy, and I can't blame him. Especially with how well Jeremy Shada does at voicing some heavy scenes (Seriously, the guy's come a long way). The amount of raw emotion and identifiable motive help elevate Finn into one of the best things about "Together Again" while also making the special one of his better stories. More so in the fact that he has no hang ups over a lady ONCE in forty-five minutes (which is impressive in itself).
“Cause of Death?”/”Who gives a toot?!”: Agreed. I don't need to know how Finn died. Knowing him, it's either employing a heroic sacrifice, or he just kept adventuring until his body couldn't take it anymore. The reason doesn't matter. Besides, it leaves room for all the angsty fan-fics from writers who want to play around with how exactly Finn bit the dust, cashed in his chips and bought the farm. So, you know, there's that.
Adventure Time’s version of the afterlife: I'm actually into the notion that Adventure Time doesn't subscribe to a single idea of the afterlife and instead combines several concepts made by different beliefs. The thoughts are still the same: You act like a good person, you spend eternity in peace. You act like a dillhole, and you spend eternity in torture. Speaking of which, it's a pretty cool callback that the inhabitants of Dead World #1 are past villains. And it's also funny that Tree Trunks share the same Dead World with all of her lovers, except for Wyatt. Which I would feel bad about...if it wasn't Wyatt.
And, to any conservative people who believe the show is disrespecting your religion, here’s what I have to say: Nobody knows for sure what's going to happen when any of us die until we...well, die. The knowledge we have comes from a collective belief and no farther. Besides, Adventure Time is a work of fiction. Therefore, its version of the afterlife is also fiction. Meaning that complaining about something that is definitely fake is nothing short of a waste of time. Seriously, I'm Lutheran, and I even take a moment to appreciate that the writers created an excellent and easy-to-understand explanation for what happens to these characters after they kick the bucket.
Return of Mr. Fox: I'm actually cool with this. Mr. Fox has always been a chill character and might just be the most normal person in the entire series...ironic, given the fact that he's a talking fox...and now the living embodiment of Death. But hey, it's still nice to see him again on top of it being sweet to see him get some semblance of a win.
(Even if the sick, twisted bastard in me can't help but chuckle at the idea of Mr. Fox icing souls by smothering them with a pillow.)
All the callbacks: "Together Again" might just have the most callbacks out of all the Adventure Time: Distant Lands specials so far. Whether it's through brief cameos of classic characters, the swift return of Shoko, the Waving Snail making a comeback, and some tiny tidbits like Finn doing that clapping thing that Jake randomly came up with within some episode. It all makes being a fan rewarding as you get the inside jokes while incredibly fitting seeing how it's the end of Adventure Time (SHUT! Your pieholes).
Tiffany: Finally, we get some official closure with this character. I had no problems with Tiffany in the past, but I find it weird how we never got a solid ending to his character/arc aside from this half-a-second-long glimpse of him being a cyborg in a wasteland. Here, not only does he have some form of redemption, but Tiffany's story feels like it has concluded. Technically, you could say that it did in "Preboot" when he sacrificed his life to save Finn and Jake. But at least this time, he gets a much happier ending.
Also, tell me a better secondary antagonist that would work best against Finn's journey to find Jake. Go ahead. I'll wait. Until then, let's move on.
New Death: This might just be one of the best one-off villains that Adventure Time has ever had. Sure, his goals and motivations are pretty standard. But except for a select few, the series never had complex and thought-provoking villains. Adventure Time was one of those shows that knew personality, and sometimes even cool designs are enough to make a baddie work. That is certainly the case with New Death. His dude-bro persona never failed to be entertaining, principally when you remember it's the living embodiment of death itself.
And his design. Goodness gracious, his design! You know that a show is doing something right when the first thing that comes to mind when looking at a character is, "Well, they look awesome." Which he does! New Death looks like the most over-the-top, heavy metal-esque thing that the character artists have ever come up with for the series, making a villain look about as epic and ridiculous as he acts. He might not be as tragic as Ice King or as terrifying as The Lich (I know, and I'll get to that), but he's certainly entertaining. And sometimes, that's good enough for me.
“So, y’all are...eating each other. Ok.”: ...There are some people on the literal Hell we call the internet who would love to go to that Dead World...and those people are sick.
Joshua and Margaret: Gonna level with you: I love these two so much. Their love for each other is quick to understand, just as much as it is easy to see how Finn and Jake turned out how they are. Joshua taught them to be brave, strong and always remember to have fun. Whereas Margaret taught them to be practical, kind, and always remember to be prepared for anything. You see that just through their personalities, which are just so charming to watch. So I'm glad that they have a more significant role in "Together Again" other than a brief cameo, and much like Tiffany, get a more official end to their story other than just dying off-screen. Because I adore them and wouldn't mind at least one more story with these two if it was possible.
“Right. Right. I’m just messing with you fern.”/”...Are you still messing with me?! *cries*”: You call it a sick joke. I call it kind of funny.
(It's also the most subtle of callbacks in the entire special. RIP Fern.)
Jake: As much as it is unsurprising to know that Finn still finds a way to kick butt even in death, it is just as easy to believe that Jake found nirvana after passing on. He was always this relaxed and wise character, even if he did come across as greedy, selfish, and lazy at times. Look back at what he said about having a chip stuck between his teeth: "To live life you need problems. If you get everything you want the minute you want it then what's the point of living?" Jake might not get everything right, but he definitely understands how the world works better than most characters in Adventure Time.
Also, while it's great to see Jake has achieved ultimate peace, it's downright heartwarming to know that all it took to snap him out of it is to see Finn get hurt. Seeing Jake immediately destroy anything that harms his boy has always been delightful, and it proves he also hasn't changed with age either. Just like Finn, this the best story Jake has ever had, as the writers kept what we liked and ditched the rest.
(Thank goodness too, because Lazy Jake is easily the worst Jake).
Princess Peppermint Butler: ...I'm choosing to believe that Bubblegum left Pep Butt in charge while she and Marceline ran off to clone gay babies together in a cave that's shaped like home somewhere. Because I want those two to be happy, and I refuse to accept any possibility that Bonnie's dead and that statue is memorializing her instead of reminding people who their best princess is. So, ZIP IT!
But in all seriousness, I'm glad to see Peppermint Butler make a return. There's no one else from the living world that Finn and Jake could have contacted that's better than him, and with his quick appearance, he gets the second funniest moment in the special (I'll talk about number one later). Peppermint Butler asking for Finn's bones is the right amount of creepy/weird to make it funny, and it reminds me so much of how hilarious this character became after the writers leaned into his surprising expertise with magic and demons. He also acts as a solid expectation subversion. We usually associate P.B. with Princess Bubblegum, and not many people expect that Finn and Jake meant Peppermint Butler. The result is a pleasant surprise that may offer more questions than answers, but it's still a blast nonetheless.
Life: Life is a pretty neat addition to the special. Her design references how two snakes intertwined symbolizes fertility and regeneration, which shows how keen the cast and crew of Adventure Time really are. There's also this fantastic attention to detail of how plants grow wherever she walks, being something that can't have been easy to keep track of. And I just love how she immediately loses it after finding out that New Death is cutting off reincarnation. Hell really does hath no fury like a mother scorned, does it?
Speaking of which, I adore the fact that Life fell in love with Death. Not only is the irony just *chef kiss*, but it's another callback to the original series. Not many fans know this, but this short called "The Gift That Reaps" was about how Death tried to win Life. "Together Again" shows how things lasted well for them, even if it inadvertently resulted in Old Death's demise. It might be one thing to reference past episodes and characters, but a short that some people might not have watched shows how much the writers genuinely care about the canon. Adventure Time might have had its fair share of retcons and redirects, but stuff like this shows that not everything has to be forgotten.
Finn and Jake just whacking New Death with a stick: This is the funniest moment in the special. It's a battle against the living embodiment of a state of being, and it's decided by two idiots taking turns twatting him around with a stick. If you didn't lose your s**t to that, there's either something very wrong with you or very wrong with me. And because this is my Tumblr, I'm deciding that it’s you who’s a part of the problem.
The Lich returns: ...You know what, sure. Why not?
Some people might take issue with this as the Lich isn't all that necessary of an addition, especially with New Death doing a great job as a solitary antagonist. But, the Lich is still as terrifying as ever, and I won't lie when I say that I got goosebumps when he still referred to Finn as a child, despite how our boy is a grown man now. It shows how the Lich acknowledges Finn as an opponent but not more dangerous than himself. And while it makes too much sense to know Finn and Jake are still kicking butt in the afterlife, the same can be said with the fact that the Lich is still trying to conquer everything even after his...is it fifth death?
The point is, while he might not be essential, he is still just as well-written as ever.
Finn and Jake fighting over who becomes New New Death: This showcases how selfless Finn and Jake are, on top of how strong their bond as brothers is. The two of them literally fighting over who takes the reigns of being the New New Death isn't done out of how "cool" the job might be. Instead, they realize that being Death is not only a curse but a curse that neither wants anybody to go through, especially each other. And even when their motivations are the same, their reasoning is just slightly different. Jake is willing to be New New Death for the sake of Finn getting the best life, whereas Finn wants the job knowing that it won't matter unless Jake's not by his side. It proves that while they're both true-blooded heroes, they're still two different characters. It's the little details like this that make me appreciate this strong writing all the more.
Finn and Jake getting reincarnated together: ...Gosh dangit, I'm gonna miss these two :'[
Yeah, like everyone else, I got a little emotional during this moment. I didn’t full-on bawl my eyes out like others, but a few tears did manage to leak out. Which is the most Adventure Time has done to me since "I Remember You." Still, seeing Finn and Jake getting reincarnated together, sharing one last fistbump as they do, is a potent moment that can make new and old fans' hearts break in all the right ways. It's just the perfect emotional conclusion that "Together Again" requires, and I couldn't have pictured a better ending to Adventure Time as a whole...Too bad it isn't the end of Adventure Time.
WHAT I DISLIKE
It should have been the last special: I know, I know. It's petty, it's pointless...BUT IT'S HOW I FEEL DAMNIT!
Finn and Jake are the main characters of the entire series, with "Together Again" being their last adventure. So having it be the last special in Adventure Time: Distant Lands would have been perfect! Because after "Wizard City," that's it. No more of this series until some idiot decides to reboot the whole thing (which I believe no one wants). To be honest, I feel like this decision will really hurt "Wizard City" in the long run. It might be fun, but having it come off the heels of "Together Again" will result in dozens of people saying it's weaker in comparison. Hell, people are already saying they're not going to watch it because of how perfect an ending "Together Again" was. And I can't blame them. I mean, the end of Adventure Time as a franchise is going to ride on Peppermint Butler? Peppermint Butler? Over the main characters?!
...Yeah, someone f**ked up. I don't know who specifically f**ked up, but someone f**ked up.
But to be fair, this has nothing to do with the special itself. It has everything to do with network meddling, given how the network decides when which episodes come out. And given how my only complaint of "Together Again" isn't an issue with the actual special, you know that's a good thing.
-----
"Together Again" is easily an A+ in my book. The characters and story are solid and endearing, the comedy is hilarious, and the callbacks make up a pretty fitting finale, even if it isn't actually a finale. Because while the fun has yet to come to an end, this is still one of the best stories of Adventure Time.

It’s coming up on four years since the release of How to Be a Human Being, the acclaimed second album from indie-pop adventurers Glass Animals. It proved to be their most successful endeavour to date – it cracked the charts in nine countries, hitting the top 40 in four, and also scored an impressive three tracks in that year’s Hottest 100. Needless to say, following up such an effort would have been a big deal regardless of anything else – but it’s safe to say that Glass Animals are a band that take the idea of an LP with considerable weight.
“Albums are a big thing for me,” says Dave Bayley – Glass Animals’ vocalist, guitarist and chief songwriter. “I think they’re kind of like novels and films, in a way… I just like that format. I think it means a lot more, and by extension I think that songs mean a lot more in the context of an album.”
“When you put out a single, you haven’t built a world around it. I see the album as a kind of universe in which you contextualise all of your songs of that time. The artwork, the stage design, the way you play live… everything. It can even extend to your fashion and your social media nowadays. You have fans calling album cycles an ‘era’ in your career. The music has to be good, first and foremost, but the only way I’ve found you can really make sense of it is by making an album.”
Fans of the London natives were first alerted to new music on the horizon with the release of ‘Tokyo Drifting’, a collaboration with fellow triple j favourite Denzel Curry, that was released in November 2019. Produced by Bayley himself – as is all of Glass Animals’ material – the song originally stemmed from creative work he had picked up outside of the band. “I was originally just working on some beats,” he says. “This wasn’t for anything to do with Glass Animals – I just had a few hip-hop projects going at the time, while I was over in America. ‘Tokyo’ started out as one of those beats, and I ended up liking it so much that I decided to keep it for myself. As I worked on it more, I started getting a vocal melody in my head to go along with it. At first, I was adamant that I wouldn’t sing on it – at the end of the day, it’s a hip-hop beat and I’m a blonde white kid from England. By my own admission, I have no swagger whatsoever. After we added Denzel’s parts, I came to the conclusion that I would just have to step up.”
Bayley’s vocals were added to the song, although he provided them conditionally: He couldn’t do it as himself. “If I’d have just sung on it the way that I normally sing, it truly would have been pathetic,” he says. “I mean, I normally sing about very very silly things – mayonnaise, assorted fruits, cookies. I had to forge out this Sasha Fierce-esque alter ego. I look to Beyoncé as my general hero to begin with, so it came in especially handy when this was coming together.”
From this, the persona hereby known as Wavey Davey was born. By establishing a Mr. Hyde – or perhaps even a Slim Shady, given the context – Bayley was able to make considerable process insofar as building the album was concerned. “I’m honestly quite a shy person, normally,” he confesses. “I know I do interviews and things like that, which might make people think I’m not, but when I’m making music I’ll be the first to say ‘that’s shit’ or ‘that won’t work.’”
“More often than not, I need to talk myself around and convince myself to make creative decisions when it comes to my music. I feel like that’s something everybody goes through in one way or another – whether they’re writing songs, or posting on Instagram, or completing some sort of unenviable task. We all create this vision of ourselves that’s just a little bit super-human. You have to talk yourself up. You have to build this statue in your mind – and that’s what I think Wavey Davey is.”
As evidenced by what we’ve already heard from the band – both in ‘Tokyo Drifting’ and last month’s ‘Your Love (Déjà Vu)’ – Bayley is further exploring the experimental potential of his voice. Rather than making it the central focus, as Glass Animals have done in the past, these songs tend to treat the vocals as another instrument. Much like one can put guitars through pedals and various effects, Bayley endeavoured to do the same with the voice.
“I’ve always enjoyed toying with the idea of harmony,” he explains. “I’ve done it in little pinches in the past – there’s a song on our last record [2016’s How to Be a Human Being] called ‘Cane Shuga’ where I used different effects. There’s a quick track that follows it too, called ‘[‘Premade Sandwiches’],’ and that’s part of it too. It’s been around for awhile as a musical concept – everyone knows ‘Intergalactic,’ that Beastie Boys song, and that’s probably the first really famous use of it. It’s come a long way, and I find that trajectory from the Beasties to Daft Punk to Justice to the hip-hop of today really fascinating.”
Although Bayley confesses he’s not sure how much of a role it will play in the third album overall, there are definitely parts in which he’s gone from dipping a toe to diving right in. “There’s a couple of different things that I’ve used,” he explains. “Take ‘Tokyo,’ for instance – on Denzel’s verse, there were a couple of words I really wanted to emphasise and accentuate. I highlighted those parts of the phrase, and I ran them through a device called a [Antares] Harmony Engine. I played little stabs of chords on my keyboard and ran a separate track of Denzel’s vocals so it would come through roughly at the end of every line. If you listen closely enough, you can just hear it.”
As for his – sorry, Wavey Davey’s – vocals, Bayley implemented different tactics. “I ran those vocals through a pretty heavy distortion filter,” he explains. “There’s also a bit of AutoTune that I added on, as well. I didn’t use the most recent version, however – I was experimenting with using this older algorithm, and I thought this older version sounded cooler. How to explain it… it’s more like Daft Punk than Travis Scott, if that makes sense.”
Even after all of this, there’s no definitive guarantee that either ‘Tokyo Drifting’ or ‘Your Love’ will be on the band’s as-yet-untitled third studio album, which is projected for a 2020 release. Even now, Bayley is yet to put all of the puzzle pieces in places: “It’s all in my head,” he says. “I can’t even say too much just yet, but I can’t guarantee that what you hear before the album comes out will be reflective of the album as a whole.
“I’ve got to be honest – I don’t even know if a song like ‘Tokyo’ will even end up on the finished product. There’s a chance it could be more than just a one-off, but it also might not fit inside this world that we’re creating with this album.” What’s clear across both recent singles is Bayley’s love of hip-hop – which one may not have necessarily associated with Glass Animals initially, going off early singles like ‘Gooey’ and ‘Black Mambo’. As it turns out, it’s served as just as big an influence on him as anything to be found in his parents’ record collection. “I actually grew up in America – this tiny little town called Grafton, in the middle of Massachusetts,” he says.
“From there, my family relocated to another really small town, this time in Texas. There weren’t many radio stations there – apart from the local country music station – but if you extended the antennae with a coathanger, you could pick up more from further out. By doing that, I was able to pick up a station that was exclusively playing rap music. For awhile there, that’s all I would listen to – Missy Elliott, Ludacris, Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, Busta Rhymes. If Timbaland or The Neptunes produced it, I was all about it.”
Across Glass Animals’ career, the group has had the chance to collaborate with hip-hop acts such as Curry, Joey Bada$$, Tei Shi and Jean Deaux. This cross-over into a musical world so different from their own is a real point of pride for Bayley and co., who see it as one of their key collective strengths that they are able to make such team-ups work in the favour of both camps. “It’s a proper honour,” says Bayley. “We’re really lucky, in that regard. We will never be able to do what they do. We’re four boys from England – when we watch these guys at work, our jaws are just on the floor. They’re just so damn good. To have those sort of flavours in the mix of our music – to add that kind of attitude into our music – makes it all the more fun to play around with and see what comes out of it.”
The comeback trail for Glass Animals also coincided with their return to the live stage. Their tour in support of How to Be a Human Being was cut short following drummer Joe Seaward’s involvement in a traffic accident in July of 2018. In November of 2019, however, the band finally came back with a show at The Bullingdon – a super-intimate venue in Oxford. Weeks later, the band returned to Australia for two sold-out shows at the Factory in Sydney and the Prince Bandroom in Melbourne. Completing the run with a string of South East Asian dates, Glass Animals were well and truly back in the saddle.
“They were amazing shows,” Bayley recalls. “The crowd was just incredible. It had been about 18 months since Joe’s accident, and he’d been working back up to being in a position where he could perform again. He’d been slowly getting back into it, so we wanted to ease him into it with a run of smaller shows, as opposed to going right back to the massive stuff.” The experiment, for all intents and purposes, worked. “I think doing these shows really gave him a massive confidence boost,” says Bayley. “It’s exactly what he needed to get him through to the other side of all of this.”
During these shows, the band played a mix of their two studio albums as well as ‘Tokyo Drifting’ and even premiering ‘Your Love’ months before its studio version surfaced. “We made a deal with the audience,” says Bayley. “We’d play some new songs, as long as they promised not to film them and upload them. Everyone was really considerate in that respect, which is obviously the kind of audience you want to attract. There was a really good response to ‘Tokyo Drifting,’ as well – we actually opened with it. It’s a nice big, heavy way to kick off a show.”
Sadly, after this interview took place, Glass Animals’ tour plans were again cut short – this time, however, by none of their own doing. A North American tour was cancelled just six shows in, forcing the band to return back to the UK and self-isolate/quarantine along with the rest of us. Still, there’s plenty to look forward to. If all goes to plan, the band will be back in October for the rescheduled Splendour In The Grass. Plus, they’ll more than likely have a new record ready to go – and if Bayley’s commitment to the album proves anything, it’s that you just know it’s going to be a really good one.
As the band bunker down at home in self-isolation amidst the global health pandemic, Glass Animal’s frontman Dave Bayley has launched a new series called ‘Quarantine Covers’ as a way to pass the time while quarantined in his studio. Read more about that and watch a cover here.

Freedom Through Femininity: All-American Rejects Front Man Strips Down
Tyson Ritter strips down to nothing for the All-American Rejects’ new queer project.
Fuzzy leopard-print top, blonde wig, fake eyelashes, low-cut skirt, stilettos – the front man de-drags as he transforms from a prostitute, Betsy, to a seemingly married, suited-up man and life of the party, Robert.
The 11-minute short film conceptualizes identity and authenticity through the complicated and ultimately haunting duality of a single person. “Sweat,” a swaggering glam-rocker, finds Betsy leaving her mark on the streets – and in a bathroom stall when things get hot and heavy with an androgynous hookup. But then, during the juxtaposing come-down “Close Your Eyes,” we discover, tragically, Robert’s “real” life comes at a price.
As the alt-rockers mount a musical comeback with the two-song EP and a forthcoming album – their first since 2012’s Kids in the Street – Ritter, 33, opened up about his own femininity, being asexual for three years, his strong opinion on how “everybody’s selling celebrity” and being there for his lesbian sister when their family was not.

Can you tell me about the concept of this short film and how you ended up using a crossdresser as your subject?
Jamie Thraves is a brilliant British film director who we were lucky enough – he’s actually FaceTiming me right now. Hang on. (Laughs) We’ve become brothers over this, but he approached us with a simple one-line concept that just said, “I see Tyson playing a woman and I see him playing a man named Robert whose fantasy is playing that woman.” It broadened beyond that through our correspondence because, of course, I had immediate questions for him about the story of Robert and the purpose of this film. Once we boiled it down, it was just this concept of identity and how people in all walks of life are never the same person in any room they walk into. I think Robert’s struggle to find himself was something that bled into my correspondence with Jamie, and we just started exploring all of our dark secrets together. It was really this cathartic thing to just talk about our lives and the regrets we’ve had and the compromising things we’ve done to become the person we were and are.
How have you had to come to term with your own identity? Have you ever questioned your own sexuality?
I absolutely have. I went through a really bad breakup when I was in my mid ’20s and I was asexual for almost three years, just living in New York by myself, totally stone sober and trying to find myself. I was raised by my mom and my grandma, and that femininity and that balance within myself of the masculine and feminine has always been a yin-yang. It’s pushing and pulling, always. And I embrace that energy because I think some of the strongest things about me are from what my mother and my Nannu gave me.
I feel like most alt-rockers are comfortable exploring the gender spectrum.
Iggy, man. I was covering my body in glitter in 2009 and everybody thought I was a lunatic. People forget about the spectacle of rock ’n’ roll being something that is fearless. To be a superhero in a band is something that takes all powers. And when you’re on the stage and giving yourself to thousands of people, you have to be this cartoon; it’s beautiful to embrace that in your own life.
These tea dates, where you meet with fans and have tea, which I love, aren’t exactly the most masculine thing. Have you had any tea dates with anyone from the queer community?
My tea dates have just started, so it’s been such a mixed bag of all walks of life. It’s incredible. People have been like, “Oh, you should journal about your tea time,” and I’m like, “No, this is precious to me and private.” A lot of people sell their time to their fans. Everybody is selling access now and I think that’s the fucking complete corruption of what’s going on with the music business. Everybody’s for sale in a completely different, fucked up way.
Are you referring to certain mega pop stars who give themselves to their fans in charitable ways for the purpose of advertising their brand?
I mean, I can’t even touch that, man. Everybody’s selling celebrity. And we’re a band that only sells music, and that was the most important part about this visual journey for this band. I grew up in front of the record button since I was 16 – how much have you fucking changed since you were 16? It’s funny, people put these expectations on bands to sound the same, to stay in that little time capsule with their friends from high school and their dreams in their twin-size bed and it’s like, no, art has to grow up;  the artist can grow up with you, man. And so that’s where we came at with this new offering of “Sweat”/”Close Your Eyes.” We’re coming back with purpose and I’m proud of that because, ultimately, I’m not trying to sell ad time on my Insta account. Everybody has to have access to you now and so it’s really kind of – I might be shooting myself in the foot because I’m not being this, you know, social whore that most people have to be to play in this crazy rat race of the music business.
As someone who’s been acting for several years now, you may be aware of opposition to cis, white men acting as LGBT or queer. There’s been a lot of pushback regarding this. How conscious were you of that sentiment while developing the storyline for this video?
I always knew that (Betsy) was a fantasy of Robert and it’s that suspension of disbelief that kept me grounded in the character. My wife helped me a lot. I just wanted to make sure that I grabbed onto all the femininity that I’m not afraid to show and put it into Betsy. I didn’t wanna approach the character half-assed at all, and as far as it being a risk to play that role, to me it was an escape and a surreal journey through a fantasy of Robert’s. At the heart of this story is a man named Robert who has a life and has a purpose, and I was serving him. So, I guess I didn’t feel like there was a compromise given that the character I was playing was the true heart of this journey.
In what ways do you identify with Betsy when it comes to any overlapping femininity?
I think that’s precious to me. I think if there is overlap, just top to bottom, it was the curation of getting her walk down. I would wake up almost every day and put on my heels and walk around my house for hours on end to find my gesticulations and where Betsy carries herself. I think it was some of (my) stage persona. There’s a crazy confidence to Betsy that I loved being able to embrace and Robert didn’t have that. Robert’s this guy who hides from himself, and I think being able to embrace that was really a freeing thing. Honestly, it put me back in my own skin in a completely different way where even now on stage I’m finally feeling comfortable to embrace everything that I am.
Growing up in Stillwater, Oklahoma, what was your introduction to the LGBT community?
My sister. I was 10 years old when my baby sister was born and my parents had a complex, tumultuous Oklahoma divorce, and I was there to sort of raise her in a lot of ways. When I had to get on the road when I was 16, leaving her was… even talking about it, it kind of echoes a heartbreak for me. We kept our correspondence, and as she grew, I was on the road. When she was 15, she came out.
Getting the family’s acceptance in Oklahoma at 15 – I mean, probably one of the most difficult things I’ve had to help her survive. She helped me survive getting through just being an artist, too, because my parents haven’t always supported me. So we were holding each other’s hand as she got to 18, and now she’s engaged to be married. But I kind of saw a lot of (the LGBT community) through her eyes.
There are few things harder than not being accepted for who you are, but it sounds like you had each other to lean on.
We did. At Christmases we were holding each other in the corner. We were the two weirdos, but at least we had each other.
What does she think of “Sweat”/“Close Your Eyes”?
She loves it. She was so proud of me. I was really nervous. I was like, “I hope you love it and I hope you think I did good.” And she called me and she still has that Southern voice: “Aw, man, ‘Sweat’ is so good. You did so good, bubba.”
There’s an album in the works. What can the gay community look forward to?
This music is gonna be out, man. This isn’t gonna be an All-American Rejects record. This is a record that is gonna feature a lot of evolution. People are either gonna be grabbing onto it or they’re gonna be letting go, and I welcome both.
You’ve given the LGBT community many encouraging songs over the years, including “Move Along.” Can we expect more along those lines?
I realize that, in these divisive times, there is so much hate and division. The thing that breaks my heart right now in the world is just how divided we are. Even my parents didn’t go through this shit. I think it’s pouring out of me right now, so the things that I see and feel in the world are the things that I’m gonna be writing about. There are gonna be songs for people who just want to sing out as an escape, but this isn’t gonna be empathetic pandering – rock ’n’ roll is the escape, man, and I feel like we’ve lost that sentiment with celebrity. People are forgetting about the music.
When you come to a Rejects show, it’s non-denominational; it’s a congregation of people who are there to let go of the outside world. The greatest thing that we can do as a people is gather without any sort of ill-will, especially nowadays. So, the beautiful thing about this next Rejects record? It’s gonna be something that sets people free. That’s what it’s doing for me, man.
