Sorry, I had submitted this request earlier but forgot to specify the type of post I wanted. I would like to request a headcanon reader x kyogai, akaza and gyutaro (separate) where the reader is the opposite of a damsel in distress, being very cool, independent, humorous, strong, smart, never falters under pressure besides being well-groomed and civilized, she can be very sweet to them but sometimes she teases them harmlessly and can be quite persuasive. I love your writing!!!
Akaza | Gyutaro | Kyogai [X Reader]
In which their s/o is very independant and can easily defend herself.
Tumblr media
Akaza
It's very hard to match him up in strength considering your human limitations
But even so, it's impressive that you can at least bring him to a struggle during a strength-only battle
He does go easy on you, I mean, you can't compare to his ability to punch someone's jaw off, but he has a relaxed fighting mode and you both train together sometimes
Regardless, Akaza is happy to have met someone that trains and works out with him
Besides sheer strength, you could outwit him very easily, sometimes gaslighting him a little bit over something stupid, which makes him laugh when he realised you almost got him
I mean seriously, who would think brown cows make chocolate milk? Almost him, apparently
While he is naturally very defensive of you when it comes to his colleagues, he trusts you to be on your own
No one would pick a fight with you because you're so good at working it out, and even if they did, he knew you'd leave them with a scar and a face to never forget
The one time he saw you knock a man out scared him just a bit, because you do sort of baby him in your personal time and seem so kind
EIther way, he loves his knight in shining armour
Gyutaro
You're first meeting was actually you shielding him from the sun, before he was yet an uppermoon, only a few decades after he and his sister had transformed
And with a first impression like that, you'd managed to get along very well
Gyutaro had always been the older sibling, the protector, he never had someone going out of the way to look after him
It healed a part of him he didn't know he had, the one that longs for a security only parents or a guardian figure can provide
Despite that, he viewed you as equals, but it felt nice to know someone could back him up if he wanted or needed it, that it wasn't just him protecting Daki
You acted the other half his sister didn't have, he watched you show her how to do makeup, you helped her dress to become an oiran, did her hair, found her accessories none of her suitors could find or compare in the beauty or intricacy of
Gyutaro felt for once, he could relax, he could step back and do things he needed without the fear of leaving his sister alone
You were his safe place, his person, the only human he'd allow to live a good life because you deserved it for everything you did for others
Kyogai
Surprisingly, for a human, you match him in strength if not stronger- so long as you leave the demon blood art out of the equation
That was never something he knew until you asked him to spar you for a bit, since your partner was busy that week
Before that, he just understood you to have a very heroic personality
When you met him, you had encouraged both his writing and his drumming, and gone to stores he couldn't to get him finer writing supplies, and things he could use to bind his writing so it was protected
Beyond that, you told stories of people who had met long ago and how you continue to keep tabs on them, some of them going from hobbyist to making careers out of it that's to you
It was touching, if not making him a tad guilty for being almost the complete opposite of you
Sometimes he worries you don't need him, since you were so well off without him, and so happy without him, too
But you argue that he lets you be yourself, and not have to always smile, because as joyous as you may be, everyone has their hardships
Kyogai is always there to support you emotionally
And if something happens that you can't figure out, he will go to great lengths to help you find a solution

Authors Note - This took awhile to sit down and write for some ungodly reason but thank you for requesting and I hope you enjoy!!

My biggest struggle as an artist is that all-consuming need for perfection, and my inability to stop examining my creations under a microscope. And this, friends, is why we're on version 5 of this stitch. Gone is the water-soluble pen, we've brought in the archival ink and old transfer techniques.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Some more rambling under the cut!
The transfer method is one I've done a fair amount of reading about, but have never tried. I've tried just about every method under the sun - freehand drawing to tracing to water-soluble paper to tissue paper. I loathe freehand drawing, I don't like washing my pieces after I've stitched them (especially now I've started using silk thread), and I find stitches can get loose after washing away paper or pulling out the tissue.
So I decided to try one last method, my hail mary, and tried prick and pounce. Supply kits aren't easy to come by, so I sort of DIYed it. Vellum, charcoal powder and talc, and some felt pads for furniture hammered into a leftover piece of wood made up the supplies, and I got to experimenting.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm not a professional, just a hobbyist with too much spare time and little self-regulation. There are things I would do differently next time - I'd probably tackle it in layers, like a lino print, and more aggressively brush the dust off after I finish connecting the dots.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's time consuming, but I've never had finer details on the fabric. And because I accidentally wrecked my vellum, this is going to be the final version. I can't keep doing this to myself!

AUTHOR APPRECIATION #1
Tumblr media
Hello Everyone! Welcome to Author Appreciation where every Sunday I post one of my favorite writers in the Tumblr and Ao3 Realm! (just to note that these posts are solely for spreading the joy that these authors and writers have brought to us and are never paid for, pushed, or asked for by the authors themselves. We just love them and want them to know it) This week we are bowing down and kissing the feet of *drum roll*
WhirlyBirbs @whirlybirbs has brought us so many heart-pounding and absolutely addicting stories that are hard to put down and will have you pacing a hole in your floor for anything new that they so graciously see fit to give us. If any of you are Silco fans from the hit series on Netflix called Arcane you may know them from one of my favorite works "Hobbyists and Finer Things" Not only are they an amazing author, but they also go out of their way to help others with a fantastic section dedicated explicitly to prompts to help other writers. So please dear readers go and show this amazing creator the love that they so deserve and grace their Ko-Fi if you feel so kind. (this is not a requirement or ask of any kind but we all know how hard it is to ask for recognition of hard work.)

irritatingly common misconception about woodworking is the assumption that hand tools are somehow the affordable alternative/“beginner” version of power tools. it’s a very weird behavior to see constantly, beginners will turn their noses up at DIY projects the instant it mentions using a table saw or something like that because “obviously it’s not meant for people just starting out” when a table saw, for starters, should be considered a must have for any woodworker, not just including but ESPECIALLY for hobbyists. they can run you a good penny if you get a good one but what you’re paying for is reliability, efficiency and a tool you will be able to use for decades, and with that in mind, the price is not an unreasonable barrier to entry. not saying there aren’t any price gouged tools out there because There Are, but generally you get what you pay for.
it’s arguable but generally power tools ARE the beginner thing and hand tools are the finer skill to be learned through experience, and even can be potentially be MORE expensive than some bargain power tools, if you look anywhere besides a big box store. sure you can find a hand saw at home depot for a fraction of the cost of a circular saw but it’s cheap for a reason. and you’ll be replacing it a lot if you use it regularly because (this is gonna be mean) if you’re someone who thinks hand tools are first step beginner things then you’re probably not someone that knows how to sharpen a saw blade
the whole thing would be like if there were a very vocal group of people who were very insistent that drills were snobby and elitist rich people things, all because they think they’re not ready to move up from using screwdrivers yet

You know, realizing this latest episode was a reboot puts a LOT into perspective as somebody who was just binge-watching the show and wondered why everything was suddenly so much...better shot?
I mean, the cinematography in this one episode is SO GOOD I friggin' noticed it because of how samey the show normally looked. It's all film noir and I LOVE IT. A strong introduction to the reboot, because this was one of my favorite episodes so far.
in terms of film quality/processes, shots, format, lighting, tracking, etc., the reboot is a pretty noticeable departure from the original. it's both good and bad.
reboot columbo is filmed in a way that speaks a more modern filmmaking language. if you pay close attention to 70s columbo, you'll notice a lot of same-y talking heads in 4:3 aspect ratio, sure, but there's a glut of creative shots. maybe some appear dated, maybe not all of them worked, but many techniques that were crazy and new at the time are taken for granted now. more importantly, they made it a point to take edgy visual risks. after all, spielberg himself kicked off the series' cinematographical tone--artful, while not distracting from the content itself. a major contributor to the series' success.
the second series is decidedly less adventurous. i'll admit there's certainly no shortage of lovely shots, and the widescreen approach is certainly novel. but the show clearly lost that pioneering edge; it was merely of its time. it no longer pushed the envelope visually in the way its progenitor did.
to me, that represents how the series as a whole lost its edge. and i kind of feel like the late 80s/early 90s columbos moreso relied on the era itself looking opulent and dazzling rather than making its own bold visual decisions.
that said, i do really enjoy much of that opulence, as well as the shot composition and noir elements of the new series; my primary gripe is just that everything is so damn MUDDY and NOISY! the current epidemic of dark everything in movies these days has its roots in the 80s, when media started Going Darker for some reason. but come on...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
compare with
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i know i'm cherry-picking and these shots aren't 1:1, but they demonstrate my point regarding lighting technique in both series. if the scene is supposed to be very dark, i DON'T want realism. short of trying to effect chiaroscuro or something, i don't actually want it to be that dark TO ME--i just want it to be dark to the CHARACTERS. a few soft lights do wonders to seamlessly suggest darkness.
that's only one aspect. i've been hard-pressed to find much information on columbo's film stock, so i'd love to hear any info if anyone knows anything. but while both series used 35mm film, the original's stock just looked better. why? (more pretentious sperging under the cut, if you can believe it)
well, the original used a lot of light and was processed with TECHNICOLOR, a legacy color development process of extremely high (read: archival) quality and dynamic range that does not fade or decompose like other color systems. that's much of why the original show still looks so good. a couple of reboots were (i believe?) done with technicolor, but only the last ones of the series, which look like they have more modern cameras, as well.
the other thing is the grain. in nearly all the reboot episodes, that grain is insanely NOISY even in good lighting. at times, it's downright distracting to watch.
[edit: @firecooking has provided some insight into how the digital development process may have added a lot of noise to the film grain]
now, i'm merely a hobbyist photographer. i don't often shoot on film, i've only ever developed a single roll with my own hands. but i'm guessing the reboot team tried to use a higher ISO film across the board to account for the increase in underexposed (darker) shots. that, combined with maybe the underexposure itself, may have resulted in such obvious grain vs the properly-lit, finer-grained, lower ISO shots of the original. at least, that's my hypothesis. i could be totally wrong.
and sure, not everyone is me staring at a blown-up blu-ray transfer three feet away from a big 4K monitor, but that the disparity in quality exists really speaks to how seriously the 70s iteration was taken. it's as prestige as 70s television got--every episode was its own film, some of which were screened in theatres, not mere TV episodes. most of the reboots are so damn dark and grainy that i can't imagine enjoying them in a theatre without heavy remastering.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
there's grain...and there's noise. deafening noise.
so yes, the reboot is splendid to view at times, but really it just makes me appreciate how beautifully and thoughtfully 70s columbo was shot. it's not just nostalgia goggles--sometimes i just like to see who's talking.

BIRBS WRITING FOR SILCO??????? (SLAMS THE BUTTON) WEE WOO WEE WOO

HOBBYISTS & FINER THINGS.   ;   silco / reader
summary: perhaps all this trouble is worth it. or, you come into ownership of the lilac lounge and after a business inquiry, find you've earned silco's interest.
word count: 2.1k
pairing: silco / f!reader
a/n: a little something i've been stewing on. enjoy what will undoubtedly become a little series, knowing me. this pretty gif is by @aestheticsicrushon from this set here!
read me on ao3  |  next chapter >
"Tea?"
You're beginning to think this whole thing was more trouble than it was worth. By 'thing', you quite candidly mean the fact The Lilac Lounge — one of three brothel's residing along the Lanes' main strip — was now under your ownership.
You'd be lying if you said it hadn't come as surprise.
(The sort of surprise that had riled half the Lanes the next morning — your screams of disbelief had ricocheted down the strip, the squawk sending whatever poor gutter rats and ravens fleeing from their morning meals. WHAT?!)
You and Yeleni — the previous owner — had never really seen eye-to-eye. She was a disgruntled, old courtesan who could rarely admit a single fault, and yet you stuck around. Be it loyalty or stubbornness, you're still not quite sure. You were one of her best girls; you've spent the better half of your life working in that plush, little brothel.
Those rooms have seen your maturity sharpen.
Whatever. Fuckin' Yeleni. She put your fuckin' name on the deed. Then, she up and croaked. Slipped away in her sleep. Not exactly the way you'd imagined her going, but it happened. You always thought there would be more screaming, more clawing — a last, desperate cling to life just like she clung to her vanishing creams smuggled from Topside.
Eugh.
There's a whole pile sitting on your desk back at The Lilac Lounge. You can't seem to get rid of them fast enough. You thought handing off a dead woman's half-used beauty regime would be easier. Turns out it's quite the contrary.
...Perhaps Silco...?
You silence the intrusive quip with a quick flash of your lashes.
You have to admit — you anticipated the man before you to be a bit more... garish. From the way Yeleni had spoken of him, it seemed as if he was a pain to look at. From her stories, every interaction between the two verged on violent. Though, you suppose that eighty-six-year-old whore rarely had any sort of functional relationship with any of her coworkers, patrons, or protection. It was charming... in a twisted way.
His back is to you now. He is in the corner, by the phonograph. There's a cart there with a myriad of pretty little bottles and pretty little spirits. The offer of tea comes as a surprise.
From your place between the two of his enforcers, you shift in your chair. Your cross your legs and rest your knotted hands on your stockinged knee when your coat has parted.
"Sherry," you speak slowly; the point in your words remains pleasant if not professional, "If you have it."
Across the room, Silco takes pause. His own drink is forgotten for a moment — and he's suddenly struck with the fact you are not Yeleni. You're... well, little old Yeleni would have already threatened to castrate him for suggesting he didn't have her tea ready on her arrival.
"Not a fan?"
She'd been a mythic woman. Quite small, but mighty. Respected.
Why she left The Lilac Lounge to you remains to be seen.
He moves, the lip of the crystal tinkering neatly against the glass. He turns back, both drinks in hand.
"No," you explain lightly, "I can never get past the sting of the water."
You get a good look at him then, backlit by the jade windows that suck in the dim light from the Lanes outside. Your chin is held high, posturing rigid as a board. Silco is a bit surprised to see you've kept your coat on. The high collar brushes your cheek.
He offers the sherry and your gloved fingers brush his.
He holds your gaze.
You're a pretty thing. Beautiful, even. Not in a delicate sense, but in a pointed sort of way. Sharp. Perhaps it's the wicked way your eyes narrow ever so slightly when they meet his.
Hm. No, not bad to look at. Not at all, you reason.
His eyes lift and with a wave of his hand, he gestures for his men to wait outside. You watch, sherry raised to your lips, and only sip once the door has clicked shut. When your head swivels back, he's still watching you.
Finally, he leans back and ventures around the center table to his rouge loveseat.
The spirit stings your throat. It's nice.
"You know," comes the slow drawl as he leans and gathers a cigar before dropping down to the sofa, "Your predecessor would have threatened me four times over at this point in our meeting..."
You snort into your drink. Quiet. Lady-like, still. Your voice echoes in the crystal as you hesitate a sip.
"Would you prefer I begin now or later?"
Silco almost laughs. Almost. The corner of his lips tug. You see a flash of intrigue narrow his good eye. The other, burning bright as embers, stares on.
"Hardly," he leans forward, elbows on his knees. Gracefully, he clips the cigar and procures a heavy, gilded lighter from the same box. He snaps it open with a satisfying tink before lighting the expensive piece of tobacco. It's a gesture. Reminding you where you are.
"Yeleni thought highly of you."
It's Silco's turn to snort. "Did she now?"
"No," you cut it down, resting your glass on your knee as you watch him extend back like a cat. He props his arm up and takes a long drag of the cigar; your smile is cunning, "But, she never thought highly of anyone but herself. So, perhaps let me rephrase: she respected you."
Silco lets that settle in the air between the two of you.
"And you?" he asks after a moment.
You swirl the glass. Your gloves are sheer. Dashed with glimmer little bits of woven metal. It flashes silver in the jade light of the office. When you lift your eyes, they inadvertently land on a painting over his shoulder. Your face snaps, a tension breaking, at the sight of—
"A Friedlingmer?"
Silco blinks.
His head turns, following your gaze.
...Ah.
The painting of the idyllic topside pasture has ensnared your attention long enough for Silco follows the trail of your figure. The glitter along your cheekbones catches the light as a stream of light filters in from the afternoon.
"It was a gift," he speaks into his whiskey, ignoring the stroke of admiration that blooms in the wake of your interest.
"It's beautiful," you speak slowly, eyes still trained on the intricate frame holding the painting, "And rare. He only completed eight paintings in his time spent Topside. You're the sole owner of one, it seems."
"...You're an academic, then?" Silco prods, "It's not often I have the pleasure of holding company who can speak on Friedlingmer's residencies."
Your laugh is melodic. Like a diamond. Pretty and rough and rare. "You flatter me, Silco."
His name is honey-sweet on your tongue. It rolls off easier than you mean for it. Silco's lip tugs again.
"It was merely an honest inquiry."
"No, no, I — I'm a hobbyist, if you will," you wave it off, your attention turned back to the man before you, "But, at the end of the day, we all chase the beauty of things we cannot have, don't we?"
Oh.
Lights alive, you're something.
...He gets it now.
This is dangerous. This little feeling that's nibbling at his heartstrings. This is — fuck.
Silco clears his throat after a long moment.
Stick to business.
"Yeleni and I had an understanding," he speaks carefully as his cigar burns between his fore and middle finger. The smoke rises up, dancing in fine lines of smoke around his face, "I take it you were aware."
"I'm looking to extend the terms of the agreement."
Silco almost chokes.
He smothers his surprise, masking it as a clearing of his throat. He leans forward, a hand falling along a crossed knee. He's a lithe man — but long. Tall. Lean and sharp. Handsome, still. You can't help but feel a bit of a bitterness creep up. Yeleni should have warned you as much.
"Our agreement was extensive—"
"I want security present for twelve hours every other day," you say sharply, as the web of the conversation begins to unravel just as you'd hoped, "For an increase to ten percent of our earnings."
"I don't have the men for that."
"Lying is unbecoming."
Your gazes connect and it's white-hot. Like gasoline on open flame.
Silco almost snarls.
"Twenty percent."
"—As if I'd give you anything more than eleven."
...
He misses Yeleni.
But, it seems you're not finished — and for yet another time in the ten minutes, he realizes just why Yeleni left The Lilac Lounge to you.
"We're vulnerable. Shimmer puts us in a dangerous position. The work we do is sought after and demand hits a new peak with every month. Protecting us puts good faith in you. It's a mutually beneficial arrangement."
Silco exhales. Then, he takes a long drag of his cigar.
"Ten percent," he affirms after a stretch of contemplation. His yield is granted with a small tip of his head; his eyes are roaming your face, "And I'll give you ten hours, three men, everyday."
Your brow lifts ever-so-slightly.
"...That's kind of you, Silco."
"Consider it good faith," he remarks dryly before lowering his voice, "I... owe Yeleni as much. She... She was a good woman. And I'm sorry for your loss."
His lips quirk when you bark out a laugh. This one is less lady-like. Honest, maybe.
"As I said before," you harp, "Lying is unbecoming."
"Please," comes the rather comedic urge for a shred of composure, "She's dead—"
"Isn't that a blessing?"
Before Silco can split the air with his own dry laughter, you continue.
"We'll settle, then," you offer your hand across the gap, "Eleven percent for ten hours, three men, every day."
A hum of appreciation settles in Silco's chest. Your insistence on a fair settlement is... different from his day-to-day. Based on principle.
He sets his glass down, drops his cigar to the ashtray, and leans. He catches your hand in a warm shake. Firm. Sturdy. The foundation of a great partnership.
He ignores the burn that clings to his skin when you pull away.
"I appreciate your time, Silco."
The sherry is slipped back and finished in a swallow. His eyes follow the gesture.
"You're a busy man — I won't keep you," you explain as you gather yourself up and gently offer the empty crystal glass to him. The rim is stained with the painted color from your lips. Your perfume threatens to drown the office in a delicate femininity that's all but lost on the space. It stokes a frightening sense of longing in him.
He stands quickly and rounds the table.
"Regardless, I appreciate your time, madame," comes the courteous reply, holding more poise than the official title; and while not entirely unwelcome, the title of madam is still one that you're not used to. Madam of The Lilac Lounge. It has quite the ring to it. You're not too sure of the tune, though. Not yet.
Then, a slow reach for your hand. You allow him to take it.
He offers a chaste press of his lips to your knuckles. The sheer material there does little to save your skin from going alight at the heat. His eyes, all the while, bore into you.
Your expression flits into something akin to interest. It's fleeting. It's replaced with a slow kiss of your lashes to your cheek. You bow your head.
"Be well, Silco."
"Until next time, madame."
When — a handful of days later —a carefully wrapped parcel arrives in the arms of two of Silco's men, you find yourself smothering surprise. It's big, and as the two muscle it through the brothel at the earned attention of nearly the whole house of staff, you can't help but hiss and ha at the roughness with which they treat it.
There's a note attached, tucked into the pretty blue twine.
FOR YOU, A GIFT. REVERENTLY YOURS, SILCO
You pull back a torn corner, and then immediately slap it back.
Your head snaps to the doorway of your office, where a gaggle of your workers have gathered. They stare at you owlishly. Your eyes are a mile wide, you reason, because you're met with an excited chatter of gossip. They leer in, rushing forward in a sea of masked, painted-on lovers.
It's a Friedlingmer.
Perhaps this whole thing was all the trouble it was worth.
By 'thing', you quite candidly mean the fact you're now the owner of an original pasture piece by Friedlingmer and The Lilac Lounge.
And apparently the interest of Silco himself.

Look, @whirlybirbs is writing a pride and prejudice level of sexual tension and ✨romance✨ in Hobbyists and Finer Things that I had to do a self indulgent Madame sketch before I started sweating to death, ok?

What is the best silco fic you've read so far?
I'm gonna list a couple because they all provide different niches and I can't choose one over the other.
First is Secret Ingredient by @sweatandwoe, it gives me such a good warm vibe while also having suspense around Silcos actions. I managed to bully more upcoming information out of the author and it only made me more excited for the upcoming chapters.
Second is A Story of Opposites by @manchaboii. It scratches my young Silco itch. It also has focus on the tensions that would be happening around that time of the Canon story and it makes it feel more believable.
Third is Hobbyists and Finer Things by @whirlybirbs. I lovelovelove the interaction between Silco and the Reader. There is some really beautiful tension and moments of insecurity that are like something you'd experience in real-life. Also the way the author describes scenes and handles dialogue is *chefs kiss*1

Any advice for writers block but for visual art?
Ok, im gonna approach this from the position of a hobbyist, because professional art is a beast of a different colour [i can talk abt that some other time if anyone wants to hear it] also i realize i got a bit long winded about this, but bear with me. Also I’m going to say drawing a lot, but this can apply to whatever medium or technique.
So lets say i played a bit of tennis before in school and i really liked it and want to get back into it. I go out and buy a racket and some balls, and i show up on the local court brimming with excitement. I am going to be the Serena Williams of this tennis court, everyone will see my secret well of innate talent overflow like a geyser, nobody will be able to believe their eyes when they see my perfect first try spin serve. I launch the ball as high into the air as i can muster, i feel my secret innate talent balloon inside of me and the ball descends. I strike my racket at it with the full amount of raw force i can physically produce. The ball bounces at my feet. I missed my first shot. Completely whiffed it. The balloon of secret innate talent explodes and deep shame and embarrassment washes over me. I’m not Serena Williams. I’ll never be an amateur tennis player. I suck at tennis and I’m a failure. I go home and hide the balls and racket in the back of my closet and try very hard never to think about them.
So that sounds like a bit of an exaggeration, but that is how i’ve seen so many people approach art. There is this mythology around art that “You either have it, or you dont” and that the people who are really good were born with those skills. The mythology of “innate talent” is a huge toxic lie, for two reasons:
It makes beginners think that they cannot do it. People run into the first bit of technical difficulty and take that to mean that they are a failure, instead of recognizing that difficulty and multiple failed artworks is a natural and essential part of the process of learning an art medium. You will fail a lot. It’s part of the experience.
It discredits and erases the extreme amount of work that higher level artists have put into their practice. They have almost always spent years, decades, developing their skill.
While “innate talent” is not real, I’ll tell you what IS real. These steps listed below.
1. Commit to a regular schedule of practice
The first bad habit any artist has to demolish is waiting to be inspired to start practicing their medium. If you only draw when you have a great idea, by the time you start on your magnum opus your drawing skills are likely to have atrophied in the time you spent lying on your chaise longue searching your blank mind for an idea and the drawing will not be successful. Make time on a weekly basis to physically partake in drawing, even if you have no particular inspiration yet. In drawing ideas come from the hand, not the brain, and you’ll find yourself having FAR more ideas when your hand is moving on the paper than when you are sitting still, not engaging the hand and eye.
2. Set attainable goals
The best thing about art is the challenge of gradually building a skill, and it helps to create specific and attainable goals along your journey. This could be anything from increasing your stamina to draw for longer periods to achieving finer shading, to learning to draw faster. It depends on what you want to achieve, but always set yourself a goal that can be achieved in 10 works or less.
3. Change mediums OR stick with it
If you’re wrestling with your tools, now is the time to decide whether you want to use something else or not. If the end products you make at the best of your ability just don’t please you and the art that others have made in that medium don’t inspire you, try a different medium. What paintings/drawings do you like? Find out how those were made and maybe try making a picture that way. On the other hand, if you really love the end products made by other artists using the same medium as you but you’re just not there yet on the skill level, its time to dig deep. You will get through this difficult period and you will succeed if you work hard.
Special note for digital artists: try and also learn a traditional medium. Digital art is informed by traditional art, so it would help to be familiar with a traditional medium that is comparable to your digital style.
4. Draw something intentionally bad
If u are REALLY stuck, draw the ugliest drawing u can. I want to see like the shittiest picture of sonic the hedgehog and bart simpson riding scooters with pizza. Draw the “cool S” a few times. Just get some marks down on your page
5. Draw something from life
I don’t care if you have a cartoon style, you WILL benefit from drawing something realistically. It trains the eye, hand, and mind to work together like nothing else, AND the criteria is straightforward. Does your drawing look like whatever you have in front of you? Is the only question you have to ask. This is a good thing to practice when you dont have anything in particular that you want to draw, because by the time the idea occurs to you, your eye, hand, and mind have already been working together and will be ready for the task. Choose something simple to draw, an apple or something. It’s just hand training.
Special note for cartoon people: cartoons are distilled from realistic visual impressions of the world. You wont lose your style by practicing drawing something realistically. It will improve your cartoon style, because now you will know in greater detail what it is you are distilling.
6. Youtube
You can learn anything on youtube. Search up “how to paint/draw [what u want to draw] with [your medium]” and i can almost guarantee there is an artist on youtube with a video detailing exactly how they did what you are trying to do. Watch what other artists do and copy their techniques. A lot of us are learning art all alone now, as opposed to earlier periods in art where artists would all be in a big room together, watching their teacher and each other. This leads to some real artistic anemia because people are missing out on a huge visual component of learning art, which is watching a master do it. Watch youtube videos of what you want to do and mimic what you see.
7. Longterm goals
Time for my second section on goal making, this time those big juicy goals that take a long time to achieve. Make yourself a folder or collage of art from artists who make the kind of art you want to make. These should be like your top tier best of the best in ten years from now artistic inspirations. These works will inform what you need to practice in the meantime to grind your skill into a sharp point.
A final note about style copying:
Contemporary artists can be touchy about style copying, “stylejacking” as its sometimes called, so while you can and should learn techniques from other artists, it is best not to try to perfectly inhabit the style of a working artist. If your main inspirations are all currently alive, try to blend inspirations and techniques from ten or more of them. If the artist you are copying has been dead for 50+ years you can pretty much go ham. Within reason.

do you have any advice for stylizing when painting? I love the way you paint so much! and I often struggle with overworking my own pieces and making them too ""sterile""/adding too much detail :(
i honestly used to have the same problem and the only thing that stopped me is when i got tendonitis and had no choice but to simplify my art! i think the biggest thing that changed the game for me is when i started making my paintings simple right out the gate. and by that i mean keeping my sketches as simple as possible.
Tumblr media
(the sketch for my recent yen painting)
i used to make masterpieces out of my sketches and while i did make some bangin’ art, half the time it was pointless because i would paint over my sketches anyway! and my painting would have to conform to my sketch, because i wouldnt want to mess it up, and that really didnt give me any breathing room. at that point, painting was tedious and i wasnt enjoying it.
but now! since my sketches are so quick and simple, i dont feel bad about painting over them and making changes while i work. its a lot more engaging and fun too! when you start with simple shapes, those shapes are more..flexible. and once youre happy with the movement in those shapes, then you can go in with a finer brush and add details until youre happy. kind of like sculpting! it also helps me to work on the whole piece at once, and not hone in too much on one section at a time.
strategic detail placement is a great way to keep the viewer’s eyes moving along the painting. not every square millimeter of your works has to be clean and engaging. its enough to have big blocks of color in order to let other, more important components of your painting, stand out.
at the end of the day you gotta ask yourself if the time and effort youre putting in making your art hyper detailed is worth it. if youre making art for printing, for work, for a gallery, then yes its worth it. i always spend more time and energy on my commission work. but if youre a hobbyist and u wanna make 100 drawings about your favorite character’s sexy ass.. maybe dont spend as much time rendering the lighting on their fingernails as u do painting their ass.
i hope theres something helpful in all this. everyone makes art differently, the same way our perceptions of the world differ. what works for one person may not work for you. but keep experimenting and you’ll find an answer. good luck!!

HPHM Profile: Seth Drystan

IDENTITY
Name: Seth Abraxas Drystan
Gender: Cisgender Male
Age:  15
Birth Date: 4/10/1973
Species: Wizard (Half-breed Werewolf)
Blood Status: Half-Blood (MuggleBorn)
Sexuality: Bisexual
Alignment: Lawful Evil
Ethnicity: English
Nationality: British
Residence: Bristol, UK
Myer Briggs Personality Type: ISTP - The Detective
THE MAGE
1st Wand: Hornbeam| Dragon Heartstring core | 12in length |  Pliant
Hornbeam selects for its life mate the talented witch or wizard with a single, pure passion, which some might call obsession (though I prefer the term ‘vision’), which will almost always be realized. Hornbeam wands adapt more quickly than almost any other to their owner’s style of magic and will become so personalized, so quickly, that other people will find them extremely difficult to use even for the most simple of spells. Hornbeam wands likewise absorb their owner’s code of honor, whatever that might be, and will refuse to perform acts – whether for good or ill – that do not tally with their master’s principles. A particularly fine-tuned and sentient wand.
Dragon Heartstring: As a rule, dragon heartstrings produce wands with the most power, and which are capable of the most flamboyant spells. Dragon wands tend to learn more quickly than other types. While they can change allegiance if won from their original master, they always bond strongly with the current owner. The dragon wand tends to be easiest to turn to the Dark Arts, though it will not incline that way of its own accord. It is also the most prone of the three cores to accidents, being somewhat temperamental.
2nd Wand: Cedar | Rougarou Hair core | 10 ¾ in length | Supple
Whenever I meet one who carries a cedar wand, I find the strength of character and unusual loyalty. My father, Gervaise Ollivander, used always to say, ‘you will never fool the cedar carrier,’ and I agree: the cedar wand finds its perfect home where there is perspicacity and perception. I would go further than my father, however, in saying that I have never yet met the owner of a cedar wand whom I would care to cross, especially if harm is done to those of whom they are fond. The witch or wizard who is well-matched with cedar carries the potential to be a frightening adversary, which often comes as a shock to those who have thoughtlessly challenged them.
Rougarou hair: It was rumored to have an affinity for Dark magic, like vampires to blood.
Animagus: Asil Rooster
Misc Magical Abilities:  Above average Legilimens but average at occlumency
Boggart Form:  Himself fading into nothingness (being forgotten)
Riddikulus Form: A tap-dancing sparrow
Amortentia: It’s the scent of a blend of Mysore sandalwood, ambergris, violet leaves, French verbena & Florentine iris-translated into the following; the scent of smoke after a fire, woods in autumn, bittersweet chocolate
Amortentia:  He smells laurels and orchid blossoms, the scent of parchment, and a faint hint of smoke mixing with iron. (Penny Haywood)
Patronus:  Hippogriff
Patronus Memory: Asking Penny out on their first date and how much her eyes shone, smiling, as they danced.
Mirror of Erised: Being married to Penny whose 6 months pregnant with her second child, both of them happy as they hold the hands of their son.
Specialized/Favourite Spells: Impervius, Protego, Obscuro, & Finite Incantatem

Professor Flitwick- What he lacks in size, he makes him in his determination, heart, and ambition. Seeing that there was potential in Drystan, he motivated the Gryffindor towards success. Sure, his focus may seem a bit wavering at times, he means well. As he endeavors his students towards their personal best, he appreciates his sort of instruction.
Least Favourite Professors:
Professor Rakepick- Her teaching methods are a bit reckless and overambitious. She seems driven to prove something but he’d rather it not be at his expense.
Professor.Kettleburn- This instructor is a reckless idiot and he is amazed that he isn’t dead yet.

BACKGROUND/HISTORY
Seth was only two years old when his family life erupted into chaos. It was during a family outing to stargaze when Moriah’s new reality began to set in. As her limbs contorted in pain, Kaizer grabbed his toddler and ran to the car. There they waited out the gruesome terror until Moriah was herself once more. Fearing what this would mean, Kaizer devised a plan to fake Moriah’s death. As his finances began to spiral out of grief, he was forced to give Seth up for adoption. The result was the placement in his uncle’s house.
At the age of twelve, he began to feel a similar attraction to boys as he does with girls. It was slight confusion but he paid no attention to it. It wasn’t until a few months later when he began to develop a crush on his best friend that he realized something might be ‘wrong’ with him. He took a risk with his friend and found such affections returned. However, this wasn’t to be a happy occasion as his father beat him severely upon finding out.
He has dated Corbyn Reyes (ages 14 and 15, respectfully). This only lasted for 3 months as their personalities continued to clash. It was intense, explosive and with a force of wills to match. It didn’t help that they didn’t share similar moral values or understand each other’s signs of affection. They broke up on hostile terms.
The drama involving the Silva’s and Drystan’s have been carried down through the centuries with most of it being forgotten by the Silva’s. The Drystan’s, however, maintain that this feud was the result of Silva greed and impotence. No one really knows the story. With the somewhat-recent history involving the Silvas, the members of the Drystan family are assured in their ascension to surpass them; as is their right.
PERSONALITY
Charismatic:  Sociable and somewhat understanding, Seth prides himself on the ability to win over almost anyone. It helps that he can read a person generally well.
Condescending. This is a part of his arrogance as he tends to talk down to those who he believes to be inferior to himself. This is obvious in his actions but, more often, it is evident in his manner of speech.
Diplomatic: This comes from being raised by a politician. He is sensitive (only to matters that counts) and is able to deal with the general public effectively and efficiently. This is provided nothing bigoted leaves his mouth.
Hedonistic: The finer things in life were made for him. Check the receipt. He was created for a lavish lifestyle. It may be a weakness but he’s fine with that.
Prejudiced: Muggle-borns and werewolves. There are probably more but these are the most common. He isn’t a fan of half-breed creatures and considers them to be revolting.
MISC
Likes: Potions, Dueling, Whittling, Astronomy, and cats
Dislikes: being surprised, pranks, indecisiveness, and windchimes
Hobbies: Playing the violin, wizarding chess, gardening, and dueling

Ted’s Woodworking Plans Review
Introduction:
Woodworking is becoming more and more popular these days. People are starting to realize that working with their hands and creating functional products they could use is a very satisfying endeavour.
It’s a productive hobby that helps to relieve stress. If you’re skilled, you can even sell your handiwork and make a healthy side income.
That said, one of the biggest obstacles to woodworking is finding plans that you can use. Most plans either lack detail or require too much work/experience to create the product… or there’s not much variety to choose from.
Over the past few years, one woodworking guide has become a bestseller with thousands of copies sold every single year. Created by an expert woodworker, Ted McGrath has put together a collection of plans that’s so huge and has so much variety that it has to be seen to be believed.
It has just every plan you could think of. With tons of satisfied customers, there’s no arguing about the quality of the product… but let’s look at it in greater detail.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
• The first thing that makes you sit up and take notice is the sheer size of the collection. There are over 15,000 woodworking plans in this product. That probably makes it one of the best and most in-depth woodworking guides on the planet.
Since it’s in digital format, the book doesn’t take up any space other than some memory on your hard drive. Just about any woodworker will be able to find a plan they can work on, regardless of skill level.
• The collection has high resolution plans for added clarity. You’ll not need a microscope to make sense of the plans.
• One of the strongest selling points of Ted’s Woodworking Plans is that they are laid out in a simple, easy-to-follow manner. There’s no complex terminology or confusing explanations here. It’s all in simple English that most people will understand.
• Besides 15,000 plans, there are 150 instructional videos for you to watch. That’s fantastic. It will make learning much easier and you’ll become a proficient woodworker.
• For those who are new to woodworking, Ted has included a 200-page foundational woodworking manual that covers the basics and also shares the finer points so that you can understand the nuances of this art.
• The package also includes a DWG CAD file viewer and a 3D modelling software so that you can see what your end product will resemble. If you like what you see, you can embark on the project.
These useful tools will save you time, money and effort. There’s no point in working on a project if you don’t like how it turns out in the end.
• Just when you thought it couldn’t get any better… it does. Ted’s Woodworking Plans is covered by a ‘no questions asked’ 60-day money-back guarantee. If you don’t like the plans for any reason, you can always ask for a refund. There’s no risk here.
Tumblr media
The Bad Points...
• Weighing in at 15,000 plans, there’s no denying that this book can be int
imidating and overwhelming to the beginner. They may suffer from paralysis by analysis. With so many plans, which do you choose?
The best way to overcome this will be to pick a woodworking plan that’s suitable for your skill level and which interests you… and then start on it.
• The plans could have been categorized better. Since it’s such a huge collection, this might be formidable task. Nevertheless, you can still flip through the plans and see which projects interest you most.
• You can only purchase and access this product online. So, you’ll need a credit card and a computer.
Should You Get It?
Tumblr media
This product is without a doubt one of the best woodworking guides on the planet. It’s a huge collection that you’ll constantly refer to and use over and over again at such a low price, it’s definitely value for money and a good investment.
Any serious woodworker or hobbyist will find this book to be an invaluable resource. With easy to follow instructions and variety of plans, you’ll be kept busy for a long time to come.
The sense of satisfaction you’ll get from creating something with your own hands is priceless. Get your copy today and start building your very own wood projects.

Fiando Bucou, late twenties, hobbyist independent newspaper investigative journalism reporter.
Another character which I adore. She is really clean cut, maybe even a little bit distant, because she is deeply into finer things in life. ‘’Knowledge is power and power gives money. With power, money and knowledge you can help those who don’t have anything.’’
She is a workaholic, so lucky for her, she has friends to bring her back down to earth from time to time. She is the voice of moral in many relationships and groups, and she definitely doesn’t mind taking charge and making the hard decisions.
