Captain Hob going from "I am nothing more than a blunt instrument to follow orders and my own loneliness and desire to love and be loved are just obstacles to upholding my honor" to "I renounce the goblin court in its entirety and forswear all oaths of loyalty to king and kin - you will never know a lonely day again" because of Rue. Prince Andhera going from "I don't know what the fuck I'm doing, I'm a fraud, I'm so terrified" to "I have pledged fealty to you - for the rest of our existence, every time you are scared, I will reassure you" because of BINX. I am unwell. I am crying and sobbing and throwing up.

Hob and Binx bonding over being the only ones to actually do any fucking work around here, damn, being immediately derailed by "IM not in love YOU'RE in love who told you /I/ was in love, because. because i AM, but-", RIGHT into both of them just sobbing is so good. The average amount of subtlety and deception in a room goes down every time they talk. 10/10 bffs.

just want all us motherfuckers to know that in Binx and Hob's funny half sob half confession in the tailor shop Brennan absolutely said "first time I felt pretty" talking about the masquerade ball with rue

it’s been a long fucking while since a piece of media actually made me cry in a way that had me physically shaking, it really does not happen often

so when i say that MAJOR hob so utterly distraught, sobbing to his beloved horse while admitting that he was indeed in love for the very first time, all the while realizing that he is not able to pursue it made me weep i mean it.

and when i say that major hob, confiding in binx that he has had one moment of true happiness and does not want to ruin it by even hoping for more with the plain implication being that he does not feel that he deserves it had me collapsing on the ground in tears i mean it.

The worst part about having no artistic talent is I can’t draw Binx and Hob in the tailor shop drinking a bottle of wine and sobbing over their crushes in front of the most fucked 3D conspiracy board

first of all THE CHASE SCENE my god Apollo whaling on Hob while he just fucking runs for his life?? perfection.

secondly andhera taking care of hob while also trying not to expose him if he doesn't want to reveal he's injured? YES PLEASE GIVE ME MORE

thirdly RUE BEING THE ONLY ONE CONSISTENTLY FOCUSED ON HOB'S HEALTH (INCLUDING HOB HIMSELF)????!?!?!?! YESS!!! YES OSCAR YES THAT IS JUST EXACTLY CORRECT because also like it's things like that that make it painfully obvious how enamored Rue is and yet Hob doesn't see it that way, doesn't notice it because he doesn't think he has any reason to find it, and even when he can't deny the things they do he finds another explanation that doesn't insinuate that the most elegant, honorable, courageous fey at the Bloom has fallen for stupid, subservient, cowardly Hob because how in the world could that be the truth? and also the metaphor of Hob literally trying to ignore his own pain until his life was actually endangered for the sake of political gains. i mean, who cares what happens to him, right? bringing consequences against prince apollo is much more important. except rue cares, and has for so long, and hob fails to see that

fourthly Hob and Rue I was begging for you to talk but NOT LIKE THIS. NOT LIKE THIS on the one hand I am absolutely sobbing and on the other I am so genuinely impressed by the storytelling capabilities of these players. the acting is impeccable and it makes me want to grab the two of them and shake them around a bit, or at least stick them in a room together for an extended period of time so they'll have time to get through all of their miscommunications before one of them storms off

sixth BINX!!! BINX I LOVE YOU WITH ALL MY HEART AND SOUL YOU MAGNIFICENT FEY thank you for being the person to say hey idiot, he loves you back you know. but also Rue's reaction to that was SO JUSTIFIED from their point of view. for all they know Hob received their raw, unedited declaration of utter adoration and didn't acknowledge it- even going as far as to give what Rue sees as a final rejection, agreeing to a political marriage for little more than a promotion. like yes that is perfect I love this cast I love Oscar so much but also I am going to be incoherent until the end of ep. 10 and even then it's a stretch

seventh IT WAS RUE! AND NOT FOR POLITICAL SUBTERFUGE, JUST FOR THE SAKE OF ENCOURAGING GENUINE LOVE OVER POLITICAL UNIONS there are so many possible events that could have resulted in the termination of gribalba's engagement but that was unequivocally the best choice imo. because now Hob is struggling with the exact dilemma Rue had fought to prevent, and on top of that they are declaring their love for them but apparently they did before?? how did he miss that??? and he's shocked and confused and maybe a little guilty but also he thinks he should be angry. he thinks he should still be furious that they maligned his court in this way and yet he can't, because how can he blame them for wanting to save someone from the pain he finds himself currently entrenched in? AND THE MOMENT IN THE HUNT you mean, Rue wasn't offended by his actions? then what the hell was the duel about? and also Wuvvy is here and she's not doing anything and altogether this is an influx of information that Hob was absolutely not expecting and he does not know how to deal with it but he thinks it might be explaining a lot of the things that had been hurting him since that fateful moment in the woods and he's starting to maybe, possibly, imagine a future where a graceful owl bear could actually love a pathetic goblin like him

i'm not sure hob realizes that he has personal agency, in complete seriousness. not that he's not responsible for his actions or that he doesn't have choice, but that he isn't purely a functioning limb in the body of some greater beast.

when binx talks to him about happiness, he's confused. doesn't she realize that he was happy, for the briefest moment, simply to be shown a small kindness from rue? doesn't she realize that that's all that he could possibly, not only hope for, but even conceive of? this idea that there might ever be more--it's simply not possible. hob is of the goblin court, he serves the goblin court, he loves the goblin court, he is theirs, and it's not entrapment so much as it is nature. he is of the goblin court in the same way that a leaf is of a plant. for binx to suggest that he find more happiness, or different happiness, is to suggest to him that he stop photosynthesizing.

but he's not a leaf. his feelings know that. his hurt knows that. and he sits there absorbing the pain of it all, so lonely and lost that the only thing he can do is to hide in the stables and sob over his horse, the only being he confides in without at least partial concealment, reminding himself that he's just a smaller part in a bigger whole and he can't help it, no one can help it, this is just for him to feel. he just has to sit with the wound of it, because he's convinced himself that he has to. that to do otherwise would be against nature.

i think he has a brief moment of clarity in the maze (hob knows himself a coward) but even that is him treating his misfortune as another inevitable piece of him. it's not that he knows this is the wrong choice, or even a self deprecating choice, or, hell, the easy choice. he knows that he is a coward. and ignoring rue and the happiness that they could bring, confronting rue with only rage and hurt in his heart that he ever could've been fooled for a brief moment into thinking that he was his own being that could be cared for as such, right up until the moment that rue told him they loved him--all of it, the actions of a coward. of a leaf, photosynthesizing. of a major of the goblin court.

so he could never have reasonably done anything else.

a random thought: I really would have loved to have seen how this would have played out if they had a bit more time - I think it ended beautifully as is so it's just a matter of "oh what would it have been like if they didn't have to reschedule for valid reasons"

An unpopular opinion: I don't know if this is unpopular or not, in part bc who I follow has skewed the data such that I think this might actually be popular, but like. My feelings on Rue/Hob was like "this is very sweet! I'm happy for them" and Andhera/Binx was the ship where I was like BESTIE I'M SOBBING I'M EATING DIRT I'M GOING TO WALK INTO THE SEA and I feel like the fandom had the opposite feeling. (With that said, "you understood service" is the one Rue/Hob line that has me feeling that way)

My Canon OTP: so uh. obviously Binx/Andhera.

Most Badass Character: Binx. I will not elaborate.

Most Epic Villain: She wasn't explicitly a villain but the vibes of the Queen of Air and Darkness were impeccable.

Pairing I am not a fan of: I will say I did not ship Rue/Wuvvy though I do think that it makes sense she would have feelings for them.

Favorite Friendship: The lords of the wing. Cousin!

Character I most identify with: Andhera. On the one hand my muscles are not aesthetic only and my immediate family is pretty decent on the whole, but I do relate heavily to the awkwardness, being a shy bookish child who became a far less shy but still awkward adult, and the paladin-ness and not being terribly forthcoming with public displays of emotion. Look. If there's a paladin, you know I'm halfway there already.

Character I wish I could be: I wish I could live the life of Lord Squak because that seems fun as shit.
