Tumblr media
Running around in the different barracks was a real workout. It was kind of enjoyable though, considering you were handing out presents for Christmas to your friends. With a slight dance in your step, you gave out gifts to all the lieutenants and captains. You made sure that each and every box came with a small note.
“‘Thank you for your hard work. You did well! Merry Christmas ♡’,” Izuru read out loud. “Why are you thanking me like this? It’s what I’m supposed to do after all.”
Izuru was always… like this. You laughed, “But hearing a ‘thank you’ from time to time doesn’t hurt! Even if it’s literally your job and you are doing what you’re supposed to do. Isn’t it nice to hear it?” He looked at the note again, then put the tiny package into his shihakusho. “I suppose you’re right. But I see that you have some more presents to deliver, so I shouldn’t disturb you anymore,” he smiled at you. He was kind enough to tell you where some of the other members of the Gotei 13 might be.
Indeed, just as Izuru told you, you found Shuhei and Rangiku together in a meeting room. “Oh my God! Thank you! Waaah, I didn’t expect to get a present from anyone this year!” Rangiku beamed. Shuhei smiled very sweetly at you too. “Thank you for the gift. I appreciate it a lot, really. It feels nice to hear a ‘thank you’.” “I’m happy that you guys like it,” you said. “There is no way we wouldn’t like it. It’s from you after all,” Rangiku patted your shoulder affectionately.
You spent some more time talking to the two of them, but eventually, it was time to go. So, you said goodbye to them and ran off. But not without someone—Rangiku—seeing right through you, identifying your plans and teasing you for it. Were you truly that predictable? There was one last present you absolutely had to hand out today. His. You usually didn’t play favorites with your friends but to you, it was the most important one.
As he was a busy man, there was no time to waste. Maybe he had already gone somewhere else? Would you still be able to find him?
You were lucky. The man you were looking for was not in his office, as you guessed. Instead, he seemed to be going somewhere. You called out his name and started running towards him.
Upon hearing his name, he stopped in his tracks, and he turned around. His hair followed his motions perfectly. It made you want to touch his soft hair so badly for a moment. His face was so chiseled and the— You shook your head. No more distractions in front of the man himself.
“Captain Hitsugaya!” you called again. “I have something to give to you!”
“Toshiro,” he corrected you. “What is it?” the white-haired man asked you with a quizzical look on his face. Finally catching up to him, you tried to explain but something about this man made you fluster, “Nothing much. Just a little present… as a ‘thank you’ of sorts!” Words seemed to be lost within you whenever you were around him. “I wanna… thank you for your hard work this year. You work hard and, uh, I think that’s very admirable and… that’s pretty cool.” And your wits seemed to leave you to your own devices as well. Why is it that, whenever you were around Toshiro, you would become embarrassingly shy?
“I see,” he nodded, “Hearing you thank me personally is enough for me already. But seeing that you went out of your way to find me… I will take it. Thank you very much.”
It wasn’t exactly the words you dreamed of. The man you were crushing on took the gift from your hand. While doing so, he brushed your fingers ever so slightly and it made you forget about his wording quickly. Instead, you were left breathless. Too busy containing the volcano of emotions that erupted in your chest, you missed the slightly embarrassed look on his face as he realized what he accidentally did. The giddy feeling that was blossoming inside quickly spread throughout your whole body. There was no way you could soothe your fluttering heart after this. And yet, your mind told you not to butcher this chance.
“Actually,” you started, “this was only one part of the present. I will drop by again!” It was far-fetched. After all, what could a ‘part two’ to self-made cookies possibly be? That’s right, your present to everyone was self-made cookies but you included a special one for Toshiro. Your lie regarding a second part of the gift was only an excuse to see him again. Seeing him healthy and happy was all that mattered to you, and you wouldn’t dare asking for more.
“Feel free to do so, I am looking forward to it,” Toshiro replied with a smile. You were too mesmerized by his smile and the crinkle in his eyes that you missed the sort of bashful yet sincere tone in his voice.
Snapping back to reality, you excused yourself and left. Your heart was beating like crazy. There was no way he didn’t hear that. You usually were someone who was headstrong and confident in your skillset. And yet, every fiber in your entire body seemed to turn into jelly as soon as you were in the presence of this man. You shook your head. How could he have so much power over you? How would things unfold if you continued to behave like that around him? Wouldn’t he think you were too distant with him compared to how you behaved around the other shinigami? Something had to change.
True to your word, you appeared in front of him in his office again a few days later with a new neatly wrapped package. You managed to hold a conversation for longer, with less brain malfunctions caused by him this time. And he seemed to notice it too. The smiles adorning his lips were more frequent and as stunning as before. However, with the new year approaching, you mustered the courage to be more truthful about your feelings.
“I don’t mean to meddle with your business but I am curious. I’m looking forward to the second part of your cookies. They were delicious, by the way,” the white-haired captain said. Oh no, he had figured you out, didn’t he? With a surge of confidence, you admitted, “I honestly just wanted to have an excuse to see you.”
For a moment, awkward silence unfolded in the room. Not a word was uttered. The tension in the air felt thick and heavy. Had you ruined it? Your mind ran at one hundred miles… until he spoke.
“In that case, come visit me again on New Year's Eve. I have something to give to you too… ‘as a thanks, of sorts’,” he quoted you, “But for now, I have to leave. Emergency, sort of. Thanks again for your gift.”
Seeing how he was in a rush to leave for whatever duties he had to attend to, you nodded, excused yourself and left before he did. Little, did you know that Toshiro only said that so he could deal with his racing heart by himself.
New Year’s Eve came quickly. You pranced around in the yard, heart threatening to jump out of your chest. Anyone who walked by must have thought you were insane but you were incredibly nervous to see your crush after being so bold to admit that you created an excuse, just to see him. Were you underdressed? Or maybe overdressed?
Mustering up courage, hand on the doorhandle, you opened the door and entered.
There he was, the man of your heart. Stunning as always. He approached you. “You really came,” Toshiro remarked. Chuckling, you responded, “Of course. I couldn’t help but be curious about what you wanted to give to me… and I wanted to see you.”
He laughed, “Ah, about that. Here you go. Merry Christmas… or maybe I should say Happy New Year?”
In the palm of his hands was… a folded piece of paper? Is that what he wanted to give to you? Your heart sank. “Open it,” you heard him say. And so you did.
In neat handwriting, you read something that you have longed to hear for such a long time. A tiny part of you regretted it because of the outburst of emotions you were undoubtedly going to have.
“‘I wanted to see you too.’,” you read out loud. You read it over and over again, mind not processing what was written in black ink. Were you dreaming? If yes, you never wanted to wake up from this wonderful dream. You couldn’t take your eyes off of the paper until…
“Look at me, please,” he said. You hesitated for a moment but did as he said regardless. There was no better way than to start the new year looking at such a beautiful man, you thought. But fate had planned something else for you.
Right in time, fireworks outside started to go off. Midnight. For an instant, a desire ghosted through your head: You wanted to kiss him.
Before you could shake that thought off, you felt warm hands gently holding your face. There was no way, right? You tried rationalizing and denying it in your head… until you felt his lips on yours. Every thought in your head ceased to exist. Your body felt weightless, as if you were floating. So this was how heaven felt like. You wanted to bask in this happiness forever, but unfortunately, it didn’t last long enough. Toshiro broke the kiss. A red tinge spread on his cheeks.
“Happy new year,” he started, “Since you wanted to be more honest with your feelings, I decided to do the same… and I heard that failing to kiss someone ensures loneliness in the new year.”
“Oh… that’s true, I heard the same. That’s why you should kiss me again. Just to make sure. In fact, never stop,” you declared devilishly and gently pulled him closer by his collar.
“True to the motto ‘two is better than one’?” he smiled, leaning in. His shyness from earlier dissolving already.
“Yes, but as you know, the third time’s the charm,” you smiled back and closed the gap between the two of you.

Kissing Bleach men in a public setting. (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧
♡♥︎♡♥︎♡♥︎♡♥︎♡♥︎♡♥︎♡♥︎♡♥︎♡♥︎
Byakuya:
Byakuya has been very busy. Keeping up with his squad, paper work, and Captains meetings.
One day Byakuya was leaving a Captains meeting and he spotted you. You were standing there, patiently waiting for him.
"Were you waiting long, love?"
You smile, shaking your head. "Not at all."  You noticed the other captains walking by the two of you but, you didn't care. You walked right up to him, holding his calm gaze. "I really miss you." You mumbled before leaning in. He happily met your lips, kissing you back. They're warm and soft. They parted slightly, allowing you tongue to slip inside. Byakuya quickly pulled away. He doesn't show it but, he's extremely flustered.
"Y/n, please, no out here."
You frown, taking a small step back. "I'm sorry. I couldn't help myself." Byakuya noticed your disappointed face and took your chin in his hand. "I promise. Tonight is about you. No work."
Shunsui:
Shunsui does not mind pda. He loves showing what's his in a respectful manner.
Things are busy in the Soul Society but, sometimes he sits around with squad mates having a drink.
You sit beside him contently, listening to the different conversations and shared laughter. Your eyes meet his and he smiles warmly. "Can I have a kiss?" You whisper while the squad mates are chatting. Shunsui beams before leaning in. "Of course." Your lips press together and instantly, you melt. You need more. Your tongue pressed between his parted lips in ticklish kitten licks. You can feel him tense slightly but, he allows it for a moment longer before pulling away. You can't help but pout when he does.
"I thought you meant a kiss sweetheart. Didn't know you wanted to swallow me." He chuckles. You feel heat spread across your face.
Ichigo:
This man gets flustered. Very easily. Especially when it comes to you. It's a normal day when Ichigo and his friends decide to hang out and have lunch together. You were going to meet up the group. Upon your arrival, you see your boyfriend patiently waiting for you. He's standing beside his friends, smiling. All you can think about is how handsome he looks. He opens his arms wide to greet you with a warm hug. Your bodies pressed together. He smiles down at you and you lean in just a bit closer. Taking the hint, he leans down and your lips mash together.
But you decided to kiss him like you've never kissed anyone before. Soft and hot. Not trying to win a battle but, seeking union and closeness. The moment your tongue touches his, he pulls away with a very red face. You can't help but giggle when Keigo whistles.
Jushiro:
The most respectful and caring man. He loves you with all of his heart. His doesn't mind a little pda. Hand holding, hugging, and maybe small kisses.
But something is different this time. You haven't seen Jushiro a lot lately due to the Soul Society being hectic. You noticed him standing and talking amongst some squad members. Nothing serious, just casual conversation. You excitedly walk up to him and stand patiently beside him. He smiles, gentle grazing your hand. His eyes land on you once the squad members talk amongst themselves. "I found you." You mumble softly. "I miss you."
"I'm sorry I've been so busy. I promise to make it up to you." He reassures, looking towards his squad mates. "If you give me a kiss, maybe I'll forgive you." You joked in a whisper. Jushrio laughed softly before leaning down to kiss your cheek but, you quickly turned your head and pressed your lips to his. Your hands gripped tight to his sleeves. Jushiro was filled with deep astonishment once his felt your lips becomes sloppy. He pulled away but you leaned back in. "Just one more," you whisper against his lips. He pulled away once again, keeping his eyes trained on yours. "We can't do this in front of our squad mates." He mumbled. Judging by the light pink hue in his cheeks, you definitely caught him off guard.
Toshiro:
It's training day for squad 10 and Toshiro doesn't miss the opportunity to join the rest of his squad. Not only does he watch but, he'll spar with members. You were heading off to catch up with some friends and before you left you had to see your hard working boyfriend.
Toshiro was sweaty. Strands of hair sticking to his forehead. You couldn't help but think how incredible he looks. "Toshiro!" You call. He turns his head your way and smiles. "I'm leaving now. Just wanted to say goodbye."
"I'd hug you but I'm gross." He mumbles. You playfully roll your eyes, embracing him anyways. "It doesn't bother me." You looked up at him, his head cocked slightly to the side. "Can I have a kiss?"
His face heats up at your question but he would never turn you down. He leaned forward slowly until meeting your soft lips. You took the opportunity to wrap your arms around his neck, pulling him deeper into the kiss. His body stiffened and you couldn't help but smile against his lips. "This isn't the right time for that." He whispered. "You one more. Please?" You begged. Toshiros face grew more red as you leaned in and slipped your tongue between his lips. Clinging to him like it's your last goodbye. Rangiku squealed. "Captain! Get a room!"
Toshiro pulled away, covering his mouth with the back of his hand. You smiled innocently. "Alright, get going. I'm all yours later." He mumbled, looking away. Unable to hold your gaze.

can i request how adult toshiro would deal w a wife/ s/o with a high sex drive ? tysm i love the way you write him <3
Thank you so much! <3 <3
Tumblr media
Honestly, Toshiro won't ever admit it, but he doesn't mind it. He carves attention and getting to make love to you is like a slice of heaven for him.
He knew before marrying you what your sex drive was like. You did warn him multiple times what he was getting himself into.
It's a great way for him to release his pent up anger. There will be days when you come into his office, begging for him and he'll eventually give in, bending you over the desk and taking you right there.
Or he'll come home, ready to take out his anger on you. You have no problem letting him pound into you and telling you how horrible his day was or how you're a pain in his ass.
There are days where he's surprised to find your cunt soaking wet and the morning has just literally just started.
He'll roll over in bed as your ass is pressed up against his cock and he'll stick his hand inside your pants.
"Why the hell are you wet already?" Toshiro asks, his fingers running under your soaking wet underwear.
"Why are you touching me there?" you retort back, a smirk tugging on your face.
"Seriously?" he scoffs out, a deadpan expression takes over his features.
He's super hard to read as he'll always wear a deadpan expression, but his actions say differently. Toshiro would never even dare to have sex with you in a meeting or even glance over at you as you tease him endlessly.
His mouth is watering and his cock is aching, but he's too professional to act on his impulses.
As soon as the meetings over, you grab onto his hand and drag him into an empty room. It's safe to say that all the captains at this point, know what you sound like.
Toshiro also has no complaints when you take the head of his cock into your mouth and start to pleasure him. He might get overwhelmed at times, but you always know when to stop.

WHITE 🦋 BUTTERFLY toshiro x f! reader
request. @chloeleau asked: For the last event, could you do Butterfly with Toshiro? All I ask is that you make it with a fem reader, I’ll let you decide whether to make it sfw or not :) have a great weekend!! tw. none. kids. toshi has a baby with you. wc. 0.6k masterlist.
Tumblr media
On his tiny little nose, as cold as winter, a little butterfly poses.
It isn’t black, its wings are all coloured white like the messy hair he has. a little squeak comes out of his mouth; what’s that creature? He has only seen black ones, why is it white like ice, like snow and hail?
“Pappa!! It’s white! It’s white! Like your name!” “Ah what a coincidence… Yes, these are common here… You like them?”
You watch them have fun at Karakura city’s park. It’s been so long since you were in the world of the living that you had forgotten how the warm breeze down here felt.
Everything has changed since the Quincy invasion; the Seireitei has been rebuild, the many lost lives haven’t been forgotten and some even have fallen in love…
It was hard to believe at first, that, Captain Hitsugaya was getting married, but soon they realized how good you were to him and how fast his heart melted. Even so, when your little bundle of joy arrived, the Gotei 13 filled with little tiny shinigamis running around holding their hands and having fun. It was like a new breathe of fresh air and happiness for the Soul Society.
That afternoon, however, your family had decided to spend a so deserved day off. A normal one, out of the daily routines of training and swords, far from the black and white shihakusho.
Your eyes reflect the sky above, it looks a little bigger than in the Seireitei. In between white ume trees, the sun rays filter, like playing with those pristine buds. The scent of jasmine fill the air, and it’s beautiful to see their white hair shine like last night snow when the sun is finally out.
Toshiro crosses his arms inspecting nothing would harm his offspring. And it’s almost like a dream, you smile sweetly to see such depiction of slice of life that to your heart feels more like a miracle.
And as his baby chases after the white winged butterfly, he comes running towards you. You put your hand up, allowing the insect to rest over the tip of your finger.
“Oooooh, mamma!! You caught it!” your baby chimes, amazed. “No, I didn’t my love. I’m only helping her to rest here for some time” you tell him, slowly getting your finger close to his face.
Toshiro, who you had stopped watching some minutes ago, comes walking peacefully and with a soft smile that garnishes his pale countenance. “Let the butterfly fly free, honey” he commands, brushing his son hair back with utmost care and love.
“Ok, little butterfly! Fly! Someday I will be able to fly up in the sky like you!” he says, scaring the delicate insect away.
However, his face suddenly turns sad.
“Why are you sad, son?” you ask, tilting your head to the side and helping him to sit on your lap. “Because the butterfly looked beautiful on you, mum!” he says, playing with your hand and his tiny fingers around yours.
Toshiro scoffs, and bends over you two. “I have something that could fix the problem… even if momma is beautiful with nothing but her own self” he says, taking a little box from his jeans. You gasp, to see what the 10th squad captain has in his cold hands… a beautiful hairpin made of white stone and fine gold in the form of a butterfly.
“I got it today for momma, isn’t it a beautiful coincidence?” “Yes!! I love it, daddy!!” “Toshiro… I love you darling… ~”

Finding peace in the silence, you hummed in delight with each passing second.
There was not much to do for you since you’d just finished tending to your own work so what else were you supposed to occupy your time with? Toshiso still had plenty on his hands before he could give you his undivided attention, and you didn’t want to rush him for one second. But he was so close that you counted the remaining papers.
Still, a little impatient, you firmly rested your head on his shoulder and he was quick to give you a pleased hum. There was no slight smile drawn over his face but the sensation in his voice displayed how content he was for having you around so close. Your touch was what made him feel so much better, thus allowing him to get a lot closer to completing the paperwork.
Head slightly lifted, your eyes traveled over his features as his brows drew together and his eyes watched carefully as if something was wrong.
“Did you mess up something?” you questioned innocently, intrigued by whatever was giving him an ache.
“No, I don’t think so.” Toshiro replied shortly, looking over the paper again to make sure there are no mistakes. “It’s the last one and I have to make sure it’s done properly.” the stillness in his voice didn’t wash your concern away.
“I know, darling.” your voice soothed him momentarily but the tension in his muscles told you just how there was something ongoing. “Take your time.”
“I am, but- “ he halted his words, tightening his grip around them. “damnit, I feel like I’m missing something but I can’t grasp what. I need it finished now, after all that mess.” his composure broke a little but the sensation of your hand slowly tracing the line of his cheeks snatched him.
You slowly pulled his face toward yours. “Maybe you just need to take a break.” you proposed in a whisper, feeding yourself off the way he was gazing at you. “Just to clear your mind, it won’t take long.”
He briefly pondered your suggestion, deciding it was the best course of action. You were right after all, overexerting himself would do no good but cause more damage, so a tiny break should aid him.
“Maybe.” His tone still gave off an air of uncertainty, so you quickly stroked his chin.
“Come on, do it. It’ll be so much better.”
With carefulness, he placed the papers down and released them. He indulged in your touch, humming contently the more he deepened himself into the palm of your hand, but when you noticed the firm expression drawn all over his face, you couldn’t look anywhere else.
You gazed at the opening of his mouth and a sudden feeling of adoration overwhelmed you. The more you stared at his fleshy lips as he took deep breaths, the more you wanted to place a loving kiss. But with each passing second your urge got the better of you, so in the heat of the moment you fell victim to your desire and kissed him.
A faint gasp crept out of his mouth as his mind slowly processed what you’d done. The sensation of your mouth against his brought so much warmth in him that he couldn’t take himself away from you. But once you slightly drew your lips back to look into his eyes, he gently pressed his hand at the back of your head, shoving you back right where you were. It was the taste of your lips that drew him to hunger for more and he wouldn’t miss the chance to obtain it. A consequence of your own actions.
Surprised by his motion, you gasped in his mouth, but the coming of his embrace stunned you so much that you couldn’t hold back. You instinctively widened your mouth, seemingly awaiting something and he was quick to notice. So quickly that he took your welcoming sign and invaded your mouth just so he could have a little bit of your taste and a few of your noises.
“Where do you think you’re going?” he breathed heavily into your mouth before grasping your lips once more, leaving you no time or space to react. Despite his focus, he found a glimpse of control to trail his hands around your frame, inflicting you with the sudden feel of his wide palms clutching bits of your skin.
Yet, it was the way he seized you that made you give yourself over to his control. The way he led you so properly, the way his build towered over you, reminding you just how much he could do.
As your thoughts kept spiraling, his nibbling of your lower lip pushed you to let out a faint whimper of delight, thus encouraging him to tighten the bite between his teeth. A visible smile blossomed on his face as you squirmed in his arms rather desperate for more, but he wouldn’t leave you unattended like this, not until it was enough for you.
However as you two desperately brushed lips together, you felt him begin to back away until he broke the kiss, leaving you yearning for more. But the look in his eyes brought a little hope in you, especially with the way they were eagerly watching you wail for more.
“Shhh, let me finish the paper first, then you’ll have more.”

congratulations on another year of writing :)))) <3
for the fic requests, Hitsuhina first date! (yes I still remember when you teased that one snippet of Toushiro going to meet Momo for dinner and Rangiku finding out haha) it can be awkard it can be spectuacular it can go horribly wrong, i want to see your take on them navigating through a change in relationship :)
What if it Was?
Rating: K/General with mild themes
Setting: sometime after the 10 year timeskip. I personally see this happening when they’re in their early young adult years, but please feel free to imagine this happening whenever you want.
Synopsis: Toshiro and Momo go on their first date, but Toshiro isn’t sure how first dates are supposed to go, or if this even a date at all.
AN: I’m starting the year off with a VERY overdue request.
@canariie, you’ve got me! I’ve been dancing around this one for years, but now I have no choice but to release it! XD
I’m joking, but in all seriousness, this one has been collecting dust in my WIP folder for a few years now. I always got stuck on it in one way or another. This fic originally came about as a sequel to In Times of Peace (which I think is the first fic I wrote for you, ironically), but morphed into something else. This one does get angsty and a tad bit melodramatic – it’s me we’re talking about - but I promise it has fluffy moments.
Just three quick notes:
The research I did into this one was based on searching online and remembering old conversation I had with a friend who went to Japan. A shokudo is a casual restaurant that offers a variety of dishes, including curry, rice and noodle dishes, even sushi.
The mural in this piece is inspired by this one.
I wrote this fics with several songs in the background. Feel free to listen to them as you read: going home and compassion by Shiro Sagisu, The Bygone Days by Joe Hisaishi, and State Lines by Novo Amor
Anyhow, enough rambling, hope you enjoy it!

“Hey, Captain, when can I get my magazines back?”
Toshiro neatens the paperwork before putting it on top of the ‘completed’ stack. Without looking Rangiku’s way, he replies, “When you stop relying on those horoscopes to predict the future.”
The lieutenant slams her hands down on her desk, almost shooting up to stand. “But they’re so accurate! Besides, it’s a fun to learn about the World of Living and how they…” She trails off when the captain stands and starts wrapping a scarf around his neck. “Wait, are you going out?”
“Yes.”
“But I was going to go drinking with Kira and Hisagi! Captain, you can’t leave me with all of this!” She thrust one hand out towards the stack of incomplete paperwork, and the other to the much smaller completed pile.
“You went out drinking last night!” he retorts. “You can’t leave this office until you complete all of this, some of it is overdue now.”
Rangiku falls back into her seat with an exasperated sigh. “I know, but it’s no fun.”
“Since when was it supposed to be fun?”
“Well, you seem to like doing it.”
“Where did you get that idea from?!”
The lieutenant pouts and leans forward, resting her elbows along the desk. “Why are you going out? You rarely go out on a work night.”
Toshiro continues to wrap the scarf around his neck, considering his words. He can already predict her reaction if he tells the truth, but telling her a lie feels wrong. “I’m going out to dinner in the Junrinan.”
Rangiku raises a brow. “By yourself?” Then after a beat she smiles. “Or is it with your Granny? Taking her out for a treat?”
“No.” He breathes in deeply as he shrugs off his haori, preparing for her reaction. “It’s with Hinamori.”
And sure enough, the lieutenant gapes at him, hands slamming down on the desk again to push herself up and out of her chair. A vein threatens to throb in his temple when her paperwork stack wobbles, but thankfully doesn’t topple.
This goes completely unnoticed by Rangiku as she rounds the desk, barraging him with questions. “Where? When? How?! How did you ask her out? Or did she ask you out?! Oh my gosh, why didn’t she tell me?! She was updating me two days ago with Women’s Association business, why didn’t she tell me then?! Please don’t tell me you-”
“Enough, Matsumoto!”
She quietens, widened eyes blinking. Toshiro lays his folded up haori on his desk, ready for him tomorrow morning. “She just said she wanted to go eat dinner somewhere in Junrinan,” he clarifies. “This isn’t a…date.” He barely gets the last word out.
Rangiku taps a finger against her chin. “You’re going to a restaurant in the Junrinan for dinner?”
“Yes.”
“Is anyone else going with either of you?”
“No.”
“So, it’s just the two of you then?”
“…Yes.”
She grins. “Sounds like a date to me.”
Faint pink colors Toshiro’s cheeks. “Whatever, I’m going!”
Rangiku scoffs. “You know, if I had my magazine I could use a horoscope to predict how you’re date will go tonight. Last I check for your sign it was-”
“I don’t want to know. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going.” He stabs a finger towards her paperwork as he strides to the office door. “Those had better be done by tomorrow morning.”
“Oh, they will be! You go and enjoy yourself, Captain! Good luck!”
This is one of the few times Rangiku looks happy to be doing paperwork, but Toshiro can’t stay to absorb this strange moment; he’d be two minutes late if he didn’t hurry. He hastily leaves his division, acknowledging but not stopping when any of his subordinates greet him.
Stepping out into the dusk, the cold air picks up, bringing grey clouds over the Seireitei. He adjusts his scarf, bringing it higher over his face as the temperature plunges. Winter had just begun, and he senses the snow is on its way, likely to fall sometime tonight.
Nearing the White Road gate, a sense of unease bubbles up in him. What if this was a date? It couldn’t be. Momo didn’t see him that way, he knows. She sees him as a close friend to him, had told him as such not too long ago.
She just wants to properly catch up. In the years following the Quincy war and reconstruction of the Soul Society, they chatted when they could, even had the occasional lunch breaks together, but work always took precedence in both of their lives; or at least, in his life. Momo has more friendships, more people to spend time with. He’d seen her with the Women’s Association members at various shops and resturants, and Izuru and Renji – who sometimes brought Ichika along when he couldn’t find someone to mind her when she was a baby and child – sharing a tea or meal after a lieutenant’s meeting on a veranda of one of their divisions. She’d also gotten more World of the Living missions, sometimes simply as an excuse to visit the Visoreds with Shinji. They were long overdue to spend time together outside of work.
Coming through the gate, he already gets stares from the small crowds of Souls and off duty Shinigami that crowd the Junrinan. It’s for that reason he chose to leave his haori behind – he already attracts enough attention with his appearance outside of the Seireitei, and he didn’t want preferential treatment based on his rank.
He heads straight for their old meeting place: the alleyway between the stall that sold spinning-tops and a garment shop Momo used to always look into but never buy anything from.
He glances around for Jidanbo, but frowns when he doesn’t see him anywhere. Must be having the night off, he thinks. It’s been a while since he last saw him too. He makes a mental note to visit him sometime this week on his break – maybe he could fit in a visit to Granny too.
“Hitsugaya-kun!”
He swivels his head in the direction of Momo’s voice. She calls out for him again, and he spots her emerging from the alleyway. He weaves his way through the crowds to her, not once losing sight of her.
As he nears, his eyes widen a fraction at the scarf around her neck. It was a birthday present from him and Rangiku, but it’d been over a decade since he last saw her wear it at a formal dinner for then-Captain General Yammato. Made from red and orange silk and patterned with the branches and flowers of peach blossoms, it was one of the most expensive gifts he’d ever gotten her. Why would she wear something like this to a dinner? Where is she taking him? Should he have dressed up more? Maybe he should have worn his haori after all.
“How long have you been waiting for?” he asks, his neutral tone at complete odds with the nervousness thrumming through him.
“Not long.” She points to a large building down the street, bustling with customers inside and outside. “That’s it right there.”
He blinks when he spots one of the red lanterns swaying in a breeze. A shokudo? He calms a fraction; it’s more casual than he thought. “Well, let’s get inside if we can, it’s freezing out.”
Momo lets out an bemused snort. “You’re cold, Hitsugaya-kun?”
He’d normally correct her for not addressing him by his title, but they’re off duty, he’ll let it slide for tonight. “I’m not the one with a fire-type zanpakuto that’s sensitive to the cold.”
She giggles, holding the end of her scarf. “I’m okay, I made sure to wear extra layers.”
As they start towards the restaurant, Toshiro asks, “Why this one?”
“I’ve been meaning come here for a while,” Momo says. “Apparently the owner used to be a Shinigami but after he retired, he decided to open a shokudo inspired by the different types of restaurants in the World of the Living he went to while stationed there. I’m curious about the food, it’s supposed be different in taste and the types of dishes they offer compared to others in the area.”
Toshiro raises a brow. He was actually referring to her scarf, but let's it go. “He had time to go do that while on missions?”
“Well, you apparently have time go for walks when you’re on missions. We all have our ways of winding down or keeping ourselves occupied during missions.”
Fair point, he concedes inwardly. “And how did you find out about this place?”
“It was recommended to me by my third and fourth seats. Apparently a lot of people have already been to it, it’s quite popular.” She gestures to all the patrons, her smile tightening. “Hopefully we can get a table.”
He hums in agreement. If either of them had come dressed in their full uniforms, there would no doubt be a fuss made over them. They’d be offered private tables away from the noise, or ones with the best view if they were outside. Some places even offered discounts or meals on the house. He appreciates the generosity, but he also considered it making a scene. He’s glad Momo is of the same mind, never flaunting her status for benefits.
He receives a few looks as they walk between the outdoor tables. He recognizes some faces from Junrinan, children he had known on his street now grown up. Momo waves to one group of them, and they smile and nod back to both of them in response. The way he is treated now compared to then is almost night and day. Although some continue to stare, there’s a respect from some Souls that wasn’t present when he was a child.
Once inside, they’re shown to a table along the wall, right beneath a painted mural.
“What drinks would you like to start off with?” the waiter asks.
“Water,” Toshiro requests.
“And yuzu juice for me, please.”
After the waiter leaves, Momo glances around the restaurant. “Are you okay with this? It’s not too noisy?”
“It’s fine.” Toshiro peruses the long menu list. “How big is their kitchen? How can they serve so many dishes?”
Momo’s smile relaxes, the nerves seeming to dissipate. “You can see why it’s popular, huh?”
Toshiro lifts his gaze from the menu. There’s only two free tables inside, and the others are mostly occupied by…couples. Couples laughing and giggling and smiling and holding hands and talking like they’re married and one going in for a shy kiss on the cheek.
He quickly darts his head down. Considering or even noticing such things would be the furthest thing from his mind normally, but he’s potentially on a date – with Momo. Maybe he should have gotten Rangiku more involved in this. She’d know what to do and what not to do…or maybe not.
Toshiro snaps out of his thoughts when the waiter comes back with their drinks.
“And are you ready to order?” the waiter asks.
Momo looks questioningly to Toshiro. “I’m ready.”
Toshiro picks the first thing he sees. “Ill get a the teishoku with yakizakana and tamagoyaki.”
“And can I please have a serving of takoyaki and the katsudon curry dish?” Momo requests.
The waiter nods. “I can bring the takoyaki over in a few minutes. The other dishes will come after.”
Momo thanks him as he leaves.
“I thought we could share some takoyaki, if you want,” she says to Toshiro. “I’m happy to eat them all, though.”
Toshiro shrugs. “I’ll eat a few.”
He’s surprised by the silence that comes. He’s used to having quiet moments with Momo, when neither feels the need to say anything and they just enjoy each other’s company. The awkwardness that settles between them is unexpected, like something from when they were first getting to know each other as children. Was it just him? Was it because this could be a date and he had no clue what to talk about?
“This mural is really nice,” Momo suddenly says.
Toshiro looks at the painting. It’s bold black lines depict a scene of four Souls travelling through a hilly valley. Two of them carry baskets on their backs filled with wood and fruits, while another Soul strolls ahead carrying various kitchenware, and the last Soul is far away and waving back at his companions. The valley’s flora is detailed and elegant, while the Souls are more flat and seem out of place. The only patches of color come from the sakura trees on both side of the valley’s winding path, the petals either swaying on the branches or falling across the scene.
“I wonder what it’s about?” Momo says after a sip of juice. “Maybe it has something to do with the restaurant if one of them is carrying a pot?”
“Could be. You could ask someone who works here.”
Something softens in her gaze as it flickers back down to the table. “I might…”
“You should.” There was his problem. He couldn’t think creatively like her, or find a way to carry this conversation. He’s never been ashamed of this nor has it ever been an issue for him, but somehow he feels inadequate now. He clears his throat. “How has your day been?”
Before she can answer, the takoyaki arrives. After thanking the waiter, Momo pushes the dish towards him. “Have a few.”
“Thank you,” he says while taking two.
She makes a satisfied sound after biting into one. “These are good!”
He only nods as he munches on his. After her second one and taking another sip of juice, her head piques up with a nervous laugh. “You asked me about my day, sorry. It was busy, but productive.”
“No surprise there.”
She frowns and her lips are on verge of a pout. “What’s that supposed to mean?”
“You’re always busy, and you work hard, so it’s productive.” He’s surprised by his compliment and how easily it fell from his lips. He stops eating, gauging her reaction as she too seems as astonished as him.
A blush colors the tops of her cheeks. “Captain Hirako worked hard too.”
Toshiro bites back on the comment he wants to make about Shinji’s work ethic, afraid he might say something else without realizing.
“We finished up our schedules for the new recruits ahead of time,” she continues, “so we’re prepared for when they start.”
“That won’t be for another two months.”
“It helps to be prepared! With that out of the way, we’re now focusing on setting up training  exercises.” She takes a long sip of her juice, but then hums. “Actually, now that I remember, we were wondering if Tenth Division would like to join in one of those exercises.”
“What would the core lesson be?”
“It’ll be up to you and Captain Hirako to negotiate. I could arrange a meeting with you, me, my Captain, and Rangiku-san if you’re interested.”
“I doubt we’ll have time in the next month.”
“That’s okay. We have three months planned starting tomorrow.”
“In that case, I’ll have Matsumoto tell you our schedules at the next lieutenant’s meeting.”
“Great!” Her smile turns rueful. “Ah, sorry, I feel like I’ve been speaking for too long. What about you? How was your day?”
“The same as any other. We only came back from the mission in the World of the Living two weeks ago.”
“How did it go? It sounded like a difficult.”
“It wasn’t that hard, it went smoothly. The Hollows were eliminated and we reported our findings to Hueco Mundo. They’ll take it from there.”
“It’s incredible that we’re able to work with them this well now.”
He hums in agreement, ignoring the thought of his fight with Hueco Mundo’s queen all those years ago. “The last thing to do is the reports. Matsumoto is finishing them up.”
“I see.” At the quiet that followed, her smile wobbles. “I, uh…I guess we work a lot, huh?”
“Yes, we do. Our duties as Shinigami never end.”
“Mhm.”
Silence falls again. He internally lectures himself, annoyed that he’s gotten so serious in what was supposed to be a light-hearted atmosphere. For a moment, he’d though this like their usual chats, discussing their latest work and setting up training exercises.
He almost lets out a relieved breath when the main dishes arrive. Momo barely draws her gaze away from the food to thank the waiter for the meal along with Toshiro.
“These look amazing!” she half exclaims after the waiter leaves.
The tension dissipates Toshiro’s lips twitch up into a smile at seeing Momo’s glee. He didn’t see what the fuss was about, but he did have to admit they were decorative compared to other dishes in other restaurants. She still hasn’t started after he “Food is meant for eating, Hinamori, not staring at.”
She ignores him as she digs a hand into her sleeves and retrieves her denreishinki. “I have to take a picture.”
He’s lifting his miso soup when she gives him a look. “What?”
“I want to take a picture of yours too.”
He indulges her, putting the soup back down and watches as she leans over the table to snap a photo. Satisfied, she nods at him and he starts gulping down the soup.
After putting her denreishinki away, Momo makes an appreciative sound after eating a katsu cutlet. “This tastes really good!”
“Glad you like it.”
The silence falls between them again. They can use the excuse that they’re busy eating, but it feels wrong to him. Had they gotten more comfortable discussing work than their personal lives? There was a time where it was the opposite, and chatting about everything outside of work took up most of their conversations. When had that changed? Why had it changed?
So, with the nerves threatening to creep in again, he says, “It’s not everything.”
Momo blinks, halfway through eating another cutlet. “Hm?”
“Work, it’s not everything. What books are you reading right now?”
Momo’s brows rise, nearly touching her hairline, and she almost forgets to eat the rest of cutlet.
“What?” he asks.
“Nothing, it’s just you’ve never asked me that before.”
“Well, there’s a first time for everything.” He cringes inwardly at how petulant he sounds.
She giggles, raising a hand to her mouth, and he hates the small, pleasant flutter that goes through his chest.
“Of course,” she says, grinning. “I’ve been reading a drama series called the Crimson Chrysanthemum saga. It’s about three warring clans, and each book is about the generations of families fighting each other.”
“Sounds like something you’d read.”
“How so?”
“You’ve always been into things with high stakes and high emotions.”
“It doesn’t just have that! It has such interesting dynamics between the characters! It’s not just all of them proclaiming their feelings aloud, you can really sense how the history of the previous books has affected these characters. There’s so many moments where things have gone unsaid, but you can just sense how a character feels towards another through their actions! For instance, there’s a character who doesn’t speak, but you know every time he looks at another character or fights that characters brother he’s not just trying to protect his own honor, but the other character’s honor too! Some characters try to make peace with themselves and with their enemies, and others have become so blinded by the codes their families have set them down a path to continue the violence.” At his widened eyes, Momo shrinks back into her seat. “S-Sorry, I got carried away there.”
He lets out an amused huff and smirks. “No, it’s fine.”
“You think I’m silly, don’t you?”
“Not right now.”
She considers arguing back as he eats his miso soup, but settles on an angry pout.
“You haven’t talked about a book like this in a long time,” he says. “It’s good to see.”
That calms her slightly, but a furrow remains in her brow. “I don’t really get a chance to talk about what I’m reading with a lot of people. It’s mostly with Ise-san and Kira-kun.” She cocks her head to the side. “You know, it’s a little surprising you’re not much a reader.”
He raises a brow. “How so?”
“It feels like something you’d be interested in.” He senses there’s more she wants to say, but she eats another cutlet before continuing. “I know just the sort of books you’d like, too. There’s a few mystery novels, ones that are hard to figure out but make total sense once you’ve finished them.”
“And why would I like those?”
“Because you like solving mysteries. Even when we were children, you’d get suspicious of something that seemed unusual or out of place and want to know everything about it.” Her eyes brighten. “Like that time when you were hearing noises at night time, do you remember?”
He frowns as he tries to recall. It’s vague, but then an image of Granny staring grimly at a turned over basket of spilled out peaches across the ground, muttering that someone had stolen some of the fruit. He’d woken to noises three nights in a row, but it wasn’t until the fourth time when they had been robbed that he decided to take it seriously. “That was when you were applying for Academy.”
“Yes! You went looking around for clues. You even asked me and my friend if we’d heard anything.  At some point, you found the animal tracks near your house. ”
He’s surprised she remembers everything in that much detail. Had she been watching on from the sidelines during that whole ordeal? “It was a stray dog.”
“Haruka-san ended up adopting her, right?”
He nods. “I think she named her Aki --”
“Because spring was a few weeks away,” Momo finishes with a grin. “I’ll never forget the look on her face when you brought the dog back to the Junrinan. You didn’t want to Aki be out in the forest because it was cold.”
He shrugs. “It’s good she found an owner. Besides, she was a good work dog, it would’ve been a shame to let her fend for herself when she could help someone in the Junrinan.”
Momo’s grin softens into a smile, one that makes his heart skip a beat and almost choke on the fillet he chews up. “It was kind of you,” she says. “And it’s not the only time you did something like that. You’ve always been kind. I wish more people saw it back then.”
He’s rendered speechless, only able to watch as Momo continues eating. He tries to do the same, but he eats slower and stares hard into the table. Where was all of this coming from?
“I wasn’t,” he eventually says. “I was a brat, really.”
“Well, yes, but not all the time. You always treated Obaa-san with kindness, at least.”
“I wouldn’t dare treat her any other way.” He eats the last fillet before speaking again. “On the books…If you have recommendations, then I’ll read them.”
“You would?”
“You’re an avid reader, I trust your judgement.”
“I’ll give my copies some time then! We can discuss them after you’re done, I’d be keen to hear what you think of them.” After he nods, she continues, “On the topic of hobbies, have you been doing any ice sculptures lately? I know you usually like to restart your Seireitei Communications column in winter.”
“It’s the best conditions for sculpting.”
“That makes sense.”
He goes on to tell her about the projects he’s working on while she eats the curry and the rest of the cutlets. As always, she’s genuinely interested, and that somehow makes him want to speak more at length about his interests, from the tools he’ll be using to the inspiration behind it. Only she does this for him, and both does and doesn’t want her to know what effect she has on him.
He gets back to eating once he finishes and she explains the new ikebana classes she’s attending. He doesn’t miss the brief sadness in her eyes as she reflects on how hard it was to get the classes up and running again after the loss of Unohana, but she brightens up again when praising Isane for her efforts to find new students and become the class’s new teacher.
Little by little, the awkwardness slipped away, and in it’s place is a bubble that envelopes them. It makes the restaurant blur away in the background, but also enhances the lights and colors that surround them, and his sense of smell is enhances to capture all the delicious scents and aromas coming from the kitchen. It’s like nothing he’s experienced before, and he nearly smiles from how pleasant it is. A world of their own, almost.
It’s only briefly interrupted when the waiter comes by to collect their empty dishes and glasses. Toshiro beats her to the counter to pay, but Momo still insists on a split bill. Not wanting to cause a fuss in front of the other patrons, Toshiro somewhat reluctantly agrees.
They step back out into the streets. It's now night and the snowfall has begun. The Souls who had acknowledged them had either left or are too busy amongst themselves to see the two of them leave.
Wordlessly, they walk through the Junrinan with no destination in particular. Toshiro watches their breaths fog in the air, floating away from each of their lips, carried by the wind, and fading a short distance away. Snow falls gently around them, and save for the shafts of moonlight peaking through the clouds and the soft glow coming from the windows of houses, it’s complete darkness all around them.
He thinks to ask Momo if she had anything else planned for them, but then she may want to part ways and break the invisible bubble around them. He wants to keep walking with her just like this, warmed by her presence and surrounded by his element.
He can make out the pink in her cheeks, it complements the reds and oranges in her scarf. She smiles to herself, content with how this evening has gone. But what was this evening? She invites him out to dinner tonight, yet he can’t tell what the nature of it is.
“Do you remember the day we met?” she suddenly asks without looking at him.
“Of course,” he replies.
“For some reason, the snow is reminding me of when we first met. It's hard to believe that was almost a hundred years year ago.” And she doesn’t have to say the rest, because it’s written all over her face when she glances at him. I’m glad we met back then.
This weather is familiar to him, he knows its rhythms and patterns, even when it was unpredictable to others. He wishes he can say the same for Souls, especially her. He’s known her for most of his life, but she continues to surprise him; just when he thinks he knows her completely, she proves him wrong.
He’s at his limit.
They’ve ended up at the edge of the forest and several meters away from the back of a row of houses. Nerves thrum through him as he comes to a stop after. She makes a quiet, surprised sound and turns to him. “Is something wrong?”
No matter how much he breathes, he can’t calm his racing heart. “Hinamori…”
His tone pops the bubble around them, and the gentle wind that blows through is colder than before. Momo waits, but the longer he remains silently, the more fidgety she becomes. She adjusts her scarf, shifts her weight from one foot to another, and takes in a breath that lifts and lowers her shoulders. Does she know what’s coming? Can she sense his apprehension?
If he says something, what will happen? She might be shocked, caught completely off guard by the very idea this evening was something more than two friends catching up. She may even laugh, wondering how he came such an odd conclusion. Either way, he needs to put his mind at ease.
“This wasn’t a date, was it?”
She frowns, a bemused grin twitching at the corners of her lips. “Shiro…” She trails off when she takes a step closer. She must see his genuine confusion because her expression falls, unsure of herself. She purses her lips, gaze briefly falling to the ground. “What if it was?”
The world stills around him. “…It can’t be.”
She fumbles over words. “I’m sorry, I thought – I assumed you…I was silly, I should have said earlier what I thought this was.”
 “That’s not it. ”
She takes another step. “Then…what do you mean?”
“You…You can’t have…” He doesn’t know if he can continue, hoping but also dreading that the implication will be clear to her.
A part of him is tempted to let out a bitter laugh, but it never reaches his throat. Even after all this time – even after forgiving him for what happened in the Fake Karakura Town, regardless of her belief an apology was never needed – he still thinks he’s unworthy of any feelings from her. He had been prepared when he visited her after her recovery to be told she couldn’t be his friend anymore, but a part of him hoped; and deep down, a part of him knew she would forgive, that’s just the kind of person she was. Her bond mattered as much to her as it did to him, to the point where it had been used against them to irreparably change it forever.
Aizen had intended the change to end in the death of one or both of them, but in the end all it did was make Toshiro realise his feelings had changed for her over the years. They burrowed deeper into his heart, to the point where seeing her in pain brought him to ruin, to the point he was willing to abandon everything he’d built for himself over the years to protect her and her pride.
“Shiro-chan, please. I don’t understand.”
“How can you…f-feel for me that way? After everything that happened, you shouldn’t.”
A pang runs through his chest at the hurt that briefly flashes through her expression. Then, something flickers in her eyes, a realization. She sighs quietly, nearly exasperated. “I’ve said it before, but everything that happened was his fault, not yours. Never yours.”
He knows this to be true deep down, but it feels like a smaller part of him always lie in wait, ready to catch him at his most vulnerable and remind him of what he did, screaming at him that it was his fault.
She takes another step. “I haven’t let it stop me from moving on, f-from…from realizing my feelings. I don’t exactly know what I feel for you, but –” Her gaze is soft and vulnerable and pleading, wanting him to truly understand. “I know it’s something more than I’ve ever felt for you in the past. I know it’s more than as a friend.”
He lets out a shuddering breath. He should be overjoyed. This should be one of the happiest moments of his life. Momo doesn’t see him as a close friend, she feels more for him, just as he feels for her. So why is he confused? Why does his heart tremble with doubt?
No, there’s something more going on here, beyond the few fragments of guilt buried in his mind and if he faces it, he doesn’t know how he’ll react in front of her.
At his lack of a response, a small, sad smile shapes Momo’s lips. She comes closer. “I’m really sorry I didn’t tell you before what this was. Somehow, I thought…” She scoffs at herself. “I thought you would know, but that was presumptuous of me. I don’t know why I…” She shakes her head. “It doesn’t matter now. I-I’ve said what I…” She stops in front of him. “Maybe I’ve said too much. Maybe you can’t see me the same anymore. Even so, only you can choose how you feel, and I’ll accept whatever it is.”
She says it as a reassurance, but there’s also a wobbly undertone, one of putting themself out for potential heartbreak.
“Hinamori, I…” He trails off as his throat constricts.
The snow dances around them, with not a single flake somehow touching her. Was it his own doing without realising? A silly thought, but one that he finds himself latching on to after such a proclamation from her.
If only she knew how wrong she was to think he would reject her. She deserves to know just how much she means to him, how much he come to love her, but he can’t get a single word past his trembling lips.
All this time, he had convinced himself she couldn’t feel the same way as he does. He believed he would harbor unrequited feelings for her, perhaps for as long as he lived, and he’d watch her find someone else. Someone who was as good, extroverted, and normal as she is. Someone who she could always smile and laugh with, who had no ties to the heartache she went through, and who would never let her feel the chill of winter. Someone she could grow old with without the knowledge of his shortened lifespan and maybe even have children with if they so desired.
She can't possibly want to be with him like that.
“Shiro-chan?”
His mouth and throat are dry and Momo is holding his upper arms, alarmed. Had he been hyperventilating or just breathing through his mouth?
“Y-You’ve gone pale," she stammers out.
He can only shake his head, trying to gain his bearings.
Her worry turns to pain. “What have I done?” Her hands fall limply to her sides. A shudder runs through him at seeing her impending heartbreak. “I’m so sorry, if I had known this would distress you, I never would've done this. I should never have said anything. I shouldn’t have --"
“No!” he exclaims as his own hands grab hold of her arms.
It startles her, and a tear slips from one of her widened eyes. “Wha…?”
“It’s not like that, stop.” He relaxes his grip on her, but doesn’t let go. He won’t make her cry, his doubts and fears be damned. Something roars to life within him, like a fire setting wood ablaze. It gives him an ounce of courage to finally speak his mind.
“It’s not what you think. When I wasn’t sure if this was a date or not, it’s only because I didn’t think you could…could --” He swallows thickly and bows his head. “-- that you could feel that way for me. Why do you feel that way towards me? I don’t understand.”
She lets out a quivering breath and sound. They’re both still for a beat, with only the wind tussling their hairs and clothes. Then, her arms jolt with a weak chuckle. He blinks, and raises his gaze, bewildered by the half smile she gives him.
She shakes her head disbelief. “You’ve always been like this.”
“What?”
“I wish you weren’t sometimes,” she continues on as if he hadn’t spoken, her gaze softening. “You see the good in others, but never in yourself.” Her voices wavers, on the verge of crying. “I wish you could see your value to those around you. I know you take a lot of pride in being a captain and in your work, but I wish it were the same in yourself. You’ve meant so much to me and many others, but I know that’s something only you can figure out.”
She raises her hands to claps his arms as another tear falls, this time for a completely different reason. “I don’t know entirely why my feelings for you changed, but I can think of a few reasons. I have always admired your work ethic, even if you work too hard sometimes. I know why you do though, because you deeply care for your division and want the best for everyone there.”
“And you you're kindness is something i have always liked about you. It's not often straight forward, it always takes on different forms, but I've seen it since we were younger. You've always been kind, whether it was finding a home for Aki, or protecting those who can't fight for themselves, or believing in me when I was at my lowest. To be on the receiving end of such kindness is a beautiful thing. You've been hurt so many times, but that kindness has never left you despite it all.
"You're strong, Hitsugaya-kun, you always have been."
Toshiro’s eyes burn with the threat of tears, but he holds them back. Trust her to say such things so openly, to show affection for him he never gave himself. Maybe, if lets her words in, deep enough o reach his core, he can start to believe her. That's for another day.
In the meantime, in a rare moment of physical affection, he gingerly holds the side of her head and brushes the trail of her tear away with his thumb. They can only stare at each other, registering a new emotion racing through them. One much like the bubble that had enveloped them earlier in the evening, warm and making a whole world for them.
He can feel for her without the pain of it. In a way, he's free.
It’s all so much, but also so simple. They feel the same about each other. They liked each other, more than friends.
Eventually, Momo ducks her head with a bemused huff. “This isn’t how I imagined this night going at all.”
Toshiro can’t help but let out a half-hearted snort. “Me neither.”
There’s something about the admission that makes a chuckle bubble up in his throat. He tries to suppress it, but when he senses Momo is trying to do the same, it falls from his lips. It’s a nervous and relieving one. Maybe the emotions had overwhelmed them, made them go mad, or maybe it was from how much both had worried about this night.
Eventually, they calm down. Momo smiles at him, but before he can do the same, she pulls him into a gentle hug. He’s slow to wrap his own arms around her, overwhelmed by how different this gesture now feels.
“Let’s take this slow,” she suggests. “One step at a time.”
“Yes,” he says as he pulls away. “I think that’d be best.”
The blush in her cheeks deepens. “I guess things will be different from now on, huh?”
“They don’t have to be.”
Her smile widens. “No, I guess not, but some things will be.” She looks back to the Junrinan. It's much later, and less lights are on. “We should head back.”
Without a second thought, he takes her hand. “I’ll walk you back.”
She blinks down at their joined hands. “Shiro-chan!”
“What?”
“Since when do you…?” She giggles. “That’s so unlike you.”
Heat rises up in his cheeks; even he can’t believe his own actions. He pulls his hand away. “It’s as you said, some things will be different from now on.”
She gasps and quickly snatches his hand back. “I didn’t realise it would be such a dramatic change!”
He only grumbles and tugs on her hand, signalling for them to get going. He tenses seeing a few souls still wondering the streets of the Junrinan, but relaxes a fraction when neither he or Momo recognise them. It dawns on him then something else they should discuss. “I may have a request.”
“What is it?”
His lips form a tight line before he speaks. “If we do go ahead with… this –” he raises their joined hands “— and we are going to take things slow, I don’t want Matsumoto to know just yet.”
Momo nods. “I was thinking the same.”
That surprises him.
“Why are you so shock?” she says. “I think we should see how this goes first before anyone knows, not just Rangiku-san.”
“Huh…I always thought you couldn’t wait to tell people when you were in a…a…” How can he not say it? He was in a relationship with Momo. The thought only made his blush brighter. Why was this making him even more flustered?
“A relationship?” Momo finishes with a knowing smirk.
He half-heartedly glares at her, which only makes her snort softly. “It’s good we’re going slow, it might take you a while to get used to saying that.”
He’s tempted to call her out at the way her smile wobbles from embarrassment and her blush spreads to the rest of her face.
“A-Anyway, I’m not like that," she continues. "I want to keep this quiet until we’re both ready to tell everyone. I’m glad we’re on the same page.” She shrugs. “How that looks in our day-to-day, I’m not sure.”
“We’ll discuss that tomorrow.”
She blinks at him.
“If you’re free after the day is done, I could come visit you.”
She grins. “Really? You usually work back.”
“Well, as you’ve pointed out, I could probably not stand to do that as much. We can meet at one of the joint training grounds after six pm.”
She bites her lip, clearly trying not to laugh again. “I’ll look forward to it then.”
Her smile in warm and wide, and he can't help but give a small one back in return as they walk back to the Seireitei.
Maybe one day they can look back on this and laugh – though he can only ever see himself cringing at his obliviousness. For now, he basks in the warmth of her hand and her presence, and in the nervous but hopeful jitters that rush through him at the unknown future with her.

Toshiro Hitsugaya X GN! Reader
{❄️Relationship HC’s❄️}
[In which Toshiro is soft with you…]
—————————————————————————————
Hello! I’m officially off of Vacation from Florida and plan on writing a few things! Here is the first one! Most of them will be about Toshiro, maybe Byakuya or Gin. Maybe even Aizen.
—————————————————————————————
Warnings:
Heavy fluff
Soft Toshiro
Soft kisses
Cuddling and hugs
—————————————————————————————
Tumblr media
—————————————————————————————
Toshiro is the type to not really show any affection to you, acting as if he was annoyed with you while attempting to cover up an obvious blush that dusted his face.
The longer the crush has lasted, the harder he will fall, and will slowly start to show his affection, only if the crush doesn’t disappear.
And for you, it never disappeared.
Toshiro likes to wake up early, to get a good start on his paperwork for the day, but he struggles sometimes when your warm body is draped around him, protecting him from the chilled room.
When he finally gets you off of him, he is already late but he couldn’t really care. Sitting in his bed kissing you softly over and over agin, he didn’t want to leave. He couldn’t leave.
He’d lazily get up, walking into the bathroom to shower while you rolled out of bed to start breakfast.
By the time he was finished, breakfast was ready and he sat next to you, kissing your lips before beginning to eat before heading to work.
Toshiro loved to give you little gifts. Small ice sculptures, rocks, little trinkets, ect. He loves it.
He doesn’t always show his emotion or speak his mind so the little gifts is one of his best ways to show affection.
He loved to hold your hand. To brush his thumb over your skin. He loves it.
When in public, you show each other respect, showing no signs of your relationship. People know, but you two just never show it out of respect for the other.
Toshiro loves to do paperwork with you. Just sitting in silence and enjoying the other’s presence is enough for him.
He loves to hug you, privately of course but, he really loves your warmth. He could stay up all night, holding your warm body in his arms, gently kissing your head.
He is so in love with you, he can’t wait to ask you to marry him.

Body Worship: the practice of physically revering a part of another person's body
Synopsis: Toshiro loves every inch of you.
Warnings: fluff, kissing, biting, body worship, praise, one clit kiss
Word Count: 0.5k
Pairing: Toshiro Hitsugaya x F!reader
-0-0-0-
Toshiro was not a very big fan of PDA, he was stoic, cold, and to the point with everyone. Everyone except you. You managed to thaw the ice around his heart. He allows you to hold onto his arm while taking late night strolls, shyly kisses your cheek when out on dates, even once allowed you to sit on his lap when the train was crowded. Toshiro was smitten by you and every little thing you do.
So, once the two of you are behind closed doors, he simply cannot keep his hands off of you. His lips kiss every inch of your body, No part of you goes untouched. You are divine to him and he cherishes you more than anything. You have become his one and only, his partner, his one true love. And Toshiro wants you to know that in the most intimate ways.
Laying down next to you, fingers intertwined as you bask in the afterglow of your lovemaking, Toshiro brings your hand to his lips. He gently kisses each fingertip, running them over his mouth as he works his way down your arm. He mumbles sweet nothings against your skin as he pulls you closer to him.
He wants to be as close to you as possible to make up for the lack of affection while out. “I love every little thing about you.” His lips trace over the scar on your shoulder you had gotten during the battle with Aizen. “Every blemish, every freckle...” His ghosted his mouth over the small cluster of faint freckles that dusted over your cheeks, “Everything about you, I want to cherish.”
His voice is husky as it rings in your ears, your hand comes up to cup his cheek. When he lifts his turquoise eyes to admire the beauty of your face, you kiss him softly as your try to pour every bit of love you hold for him. “Everything?” you ask breathlessly.
“Everything.” Toshiro kisses your cheek, biting it gently. “I love how soft your cheeks are.” He trails kisses down to your neck, nibbling the skin. “Love how sensitive your neck is.” His lips trace down your collarbone to your chest hand cupping your breasts as he lavish them in kisses. “Love the way your breath hitches when I kiss these beautiful breasts.”
You back arches when Toshiro lays his kisses down your tummy, his tongue flicking out to taste the salt from the light sheen of sweat that still covered your skin from your previous activities. “To...shiro...” You whine out softly feeling his teeth graze over your belly as his left tiny marks on your skin on his descent down your body.
“I love how your back arches so perfectly for me as I lay kisses down your stomach. I also love how your legs tremble when I have them over my shoulders.” He whispers, looking up at you as he does just that. His large hands wrap around your thighs to rest them over his broad shoulders. “I love how sweetly you moan for me when I barely even touch you, how you cutely you squirm when I spread you open.” His thumbs move to open your lips to his gaze and he leans down to place the lightest, barely there kiss to your clit. “I love that you’re all mine.”
“All yours.”

Adult Toshiro and his first time with the reader?
Tumblr media
Nervous. Anxious. On edge and timid were all words to describe Toshiro right now. His palms were sweaty and he was afraid to touch you because of it.
He was hovering above you, hands placed on each other of your head, steadying himself. You were both naked and had already taken your time exploring each other's bodies, but now it was time for the real thing.
Your eyes gaze over at his muscles and shift yourself underneath him, clearing your throat.
"Toshiro," you call out, breaking him out of his trance.
"Sorry," Toshiro mumbles out, glancing away from you. The tips of his cheeks turn a bright pink and you furrow your eyebrows.
"Are you nervous?" you speak with a soft voice and his eyes widen.
"What? No, of course not," Toshiro quickly cuts you down and you scoff quietly.
"Really?" you cock and yebrow.
"Don't be such a pain in my ass, y/n," Toshiro retorts, his sharp gaze meeting yours. You sit up and Toshiro backs away from you. You press your hands onto his muscular chest and push him down into the bed.
"You're the one being a pain," you sigh out.
"Are you sure about this?" Toshiro asks, his voice laced with concern and you nod your head.
"Of course," you reassure him and he chews on his bottom lip.
"I don't want to hurt you," Toshiro reveals and you let out a tiny chuckle. You crawl your way onto Toshiro's lap and he sits up, wrapping his arms around your waist to steady you.
You rake your fingers through his frosty hair and smile warmly.
"You're not going to hurt me. Trust you," you assure him, reaching down and wrapping your fingers around the tip of his cock. Toshiro hisses at the feeling and you rest your forehead against his.
You pull Toshiro's tip to your entrance and let out a breathlessly gasp. Toshiro's eyes widen as his cock disappears inside of your cunt and you moan quietly.
Tears instantly fill up to the brim of your eyelids from the immense pleasure.
Toshiro meets your tearful gaze and panic floods his body. He grabs onto your hand and laces your fingers together, giving your hand a tight squeeze.
"You're not hurting me, I'm fine. I promise," you comment and Toshiro pulls you closer, his arm still wrapped around your waist.
"Good," Toshiro replies as you roll your hips forward, dragging your cunt over his cock. Toshiro presses his lips to yours, quieting your moans.
Each time you roll your hips forward, the tip of his cock prods against your sweet spot, eliciting moans from your lips. You pull away from Toshiro's warm lips and your lips slightly gape open.
Stranded pieces of Toshiro's icy hair fall into his face and your heart skips a beat. Your cunt clenches around the length of Toshiro's cock and he groans quietly, knitting his eyebrows together.
The room is filled with heavy, hot breaths, the sound of skin slapping, and your sweet moans.
Toshiro dips his head down to your collarbone, placing hot, wet kisses along your skin. Goosebumps form along your skin and your hips were starting to become tired and aching.
"F-fuck, Toshiro," you moan out, digging your fingernails into the blade of his shoulders. Toshiro gazes at your face, sweat gleaming off your forehead and he places his hands on your hips.
Toshiro starts to move your hips over his cock and you lean your head back. His gaze never leaves yours as you climb to your high, relishing in his cock exploring your insides.
Your legs start to slightly tremble as you sink down onto Toshiro's cock and a loud moan leaves your lips. The knots it your stomach come undone as you spill yourself out onto Toshiro's cock.
The action alone makes him cum on the spot, filling you up to the brim. You both pant heavily, relishing in the moment and you lean your head down.
You place your lips against his shoulder, pressing soft and gentle kisses to his shoulder blades.
"I love you," Toshiro whispers, wrapping his arms around your body and pulling you closer. Your body melts against his, heat radiating off and you smile warmly.
"I love you too, but I really don't want to move right now," you mumble out and Toshiro stifles back laughter. He pulls back, enough to peer at your face, lust leaking out of your eyes.
His warm cock stills steady inside of your cunt and Toshiro nods his head.
"Then we'll stay like this for a little bit," he offers, his hand cupping your cheek. His thumb brushes your jawline and he pulls your face towards his.
Toshiro presses his lips against yours, his insides tingling at the way your lips feel against his.
Perfect, he thought. Everything is perfect.

Hiii I saw that you are taking fanfic requests and I'd love to rq a Hitsuhina future fic where they are married and with kids, maybe something in the same vein as Baby it's Cold Outside bc I absolutely adore how you wrote their interactions here and I think that there needs to be more content of Hitsuhina having a family of their own in general 💖
Thank you Anon for the lovely note! I am a HUGE fan of domestic fluff so it makes me so happy that you enjoyed it!
I have a multichapter WIP in the works, tentatively called faded, so I figured this would be a good one to answer with! There's still a lot that I have to write and plan; I want to take special care for this one because it was inspired by a conversation with a dear friend so please look out for it in the future!
For now, please enjoy this scene!
faded [selected scene]
Rating: K+
Synopsis: Toushiro and Momo watch the festival fireworks while her son sleeps.
Word Count: 860 words
Setting: post-Epilogue, fifty years (and then some) in the future when Momo and Toushiro are adults
“I’ve never seen you so gentle with anyone…” but me. Momo cleared her throat, focusing on the little boy’s dark curls. Against the dark of the night, they shone as the colours of the fireworks blazed in the background.
Toushiro laughed softly, running his fingers through Natsume’s hair slowly. “He’s very hard not to care for. I can see why he’s loved by everyone.” A ghost of a proud smile settled on his face, making Momo’s heart stutter.
“But what makes it the easiest,” he murmured, “is that all the best parts of him—they’re all from you.” Toushiro looked up, his teal eyes deepening to an emerald and Momo felt the breath escape from her chest. And just like that, she felt younger, though a warrior worn of battle, yet a girl less experienced in matters of the heart.
“His smile, his cheerful personality, his hair, his best belief in others—I’m glad he takes after you.” Natsume made a slight noise and Toushiro adjusted him, pulling him up onto his lap and letting the little boy sleep against his chest.
The scene was so tender and heart felt and it was just like she imagined a million times that it squeezed her heart, until it felt almost painful to breathe. Like a tidal wave of emotion, every single feeling that she had held back started to pour out, overwhelming her. Before she knew it, tears started streaming down her face, and she tried her best to quickly wipe them away.
“Hinamori?”
Momo shook her head quickly. “No, no these are happy tears,” she sniffled, trying to dab at her eyes with a handkerchief. “In my wildest dreams, I’ve always hoped to see the two of you together.”
Toushiro looked at her with the same look he gave Natsume before he pulled her to his side, settling his hand on her waist. “Nothing in my dreams would ever have compared to this.”
That made Momo cry even harder, tucking herself into Toushiro’s neck like she had done many times years ago when they were both younger and the world felt smaller. Inside she knew that was much too old for this—she was a mother for goodness sake—but under the cover of the night sky, she finally felt the courage to admit to herself that maybe she didn’t want to be alone anymore.
“Let’s just hope he isn’t a Bedwetter like his mother,” Momo could hear him chuckle to which she quickly jabbed him on the side. “That is a habit I grew out of years ago—and it was one time!” Momo defended, not raising her voice any higher to disturb the little boy. She swiped at the dried tear tracks, sending an attempt at a glare at the taller man, which did nothing to sway the smirk from his face.
There was a moment of quiet, and Momo could hear the voices from beyond slowly quiet and the lights flicker out, like summer fireflies bidding goodbyes. The fireworks were starting to slow, until the only light that remained was the lone white moon. It made the hair of the tenth captain shine and casted deep shadows on his face, brightening his eyes.
“But to be completely honest, Natsume’s best traits are his eyes. When I first saw him open them up after he was born,” Momo smiled wistfully pulling back the hair from Natsume’s forehead, “I immediately fell in love.
“They’re a bit brighter than yours but it reminds me of the ocean. It made any pain of the pregnancy completely worth it.” She bent forward and kissed the little boy’s forehead. “I would do anything for him.”
Momo traced a finger gently along the profile of her son. “But his smile, when he truly is over the moon and his eyes shine—that’s you Toushiro, that’s all you.”
She looked up and Toushiro was looking back at her with an inexplicable look on his face. While it stirred old feelings in her, Momo lamented inwardly that in his absence, she had lost her ability to read him in moments like this.
He pulled her hand towards him, making her tilt her head up and losing herself in deep emerald.
“Hinamori,” he breathed, his voice ragged. “I care for you—for him, for us.”
“Oh Hitsugaya-kun,” Momo shook her head, her brown eyes shining. “I know you do.”
She gently pulled her hand away, holding it against her own heart. “But there’s too much at stake now—I can’t risk anything that can hurt him. You leaving without a word, fifty years ago—it hurt me more than ever blade ever did. And that’s a pain I swore I never would have Natsume go through.”
Toushiro was left speechless, the only movement the widening of his eyes. Momo swiftly got up, taking Natsume in her arms. She held out the tenth division cloak to him which the white-haired man took quietly. “Thank you for tonight. Good night—Hitsugaya-taicho.”
Before he could say anything, she turned her back on him and moved through the night with the sleeping boy mindless of the storm of emotions inside of his mother.
I hope this leaves people with a lot of questions as it did answers haha This won't come out for a long time but please look forward to it!

A hot summer at the Soul Society appeared unexpectedly to boil every soul and Shinigami. It was especially painful for those whom Zanpakuto were based on ice, and because of that, Captain Toshiro Hitsugaya would bury himself inside a bathtub filled with ice. But things came out of control when some Zanpakuto remembered those times they were a little “rebellious”…
“Master, I’m melting” Hyōrinmaru says, manifesting right in front of Toshiro who blushes because he is almost naked in front of his own sword’s soul. “Uh! Uh- Hyōrinmaru!” the white-haired pal screams trying to reach for the towel hanging next to him.
Such shout alerted you, as one of the 10th Squad Officer of the Gotei 13 you have to take care of your captain safety. “Captain? Are you alright?” you ask on the other side of the room. Squad tenth walls are kind of thin so you can hear everything.
Not even 10 seconds after, the doors opened, and like a snowstorm Hyōrinmaru followed by Toshiro passed running. “Come back here!!!” “No, I’m gonna stop the heat!!!”
You stand there, gawking. Is that Captain Toshiro wearing just shorts, running behind his manifested Zanpakuto throwing a tantrum because it’s hot? Yes. Yes, it is.
You run after them, searching for your vice-captain, Matsumoto Rangiku. But, as always, she isn’t there. Then, it’s time for you, the third place to help him. You grab his Shihakusho and try to find him.
After wandering around the whole Gotei 13 and stopping by the Kuchiki manor, where you learned Rukia was also running after Sode no Shirayuki you finally met your captain.
Right around one of the corners of the many houses of the Seireitei, Toshiro and you bump into each other. Both hit each other’s foreheads and fall back, creating the perfect moment for Hyōrinmaru to finally run away from you two.
“Ahhh…. Officer!” Toshiro scolds you, rubbing his forehead. “I’m so sorry, Captain. I- I brought you your clothes” you tell him, maybe that would make him forget about the pain. His intense icy blue eyes shine when you mention his clothes and quickly stands up lending you a hand to do the same.
He inspects you to see if you were hurt in silence, and the proximity of his cold hands to your forehead makes you shiver. And it’s not because it was cold, but because Toshiro Hitsugaya is your crush. Man you adore, man you admire, man you lust for.
But he has never seen you as anything but a subordinate from his squad…
You give him his Shihakusho, and he quickly covers up. “Thank you, officer (Name)” he mumbles, perfectly tucking the sash around his tiny waist. You can’t help but look at each and every single movement his hands perform and wish his fingers were interlocked with yours.
“Let’s go, Hyōrinmaru shouldn’t be far. He flew away towards the woods” he says, and without him giving you any order you follow him. That was enough for you to understand you were now on a mission.
Even if the sun was slowly setting, the heat of an abnormal summer would still be felt in your bodies and sweating and panting you ran to the Soul Society’s Woodland…
“I can’t believe I can’t still sense his reiatsu” Toshiro grunts, annoyed with the situation. He is frustrated and feels powerless once again before a rebellious Zanpakuto.
“It’s ok, Captain. Let’s get going. I’m sure we are going to find him” you tell him, maybe trying to sooth his anger.
Toshiro turns around and his icy stare lands on yours. It, paradoxically, begins burning holes into your eyes and you think you should shut your mouth from now on. But he surprises you. Instead of a scolding session, he simply sighs and sits down on the ground.
You instantly crunch next to him, maybe he isn’t feeling well because of the heat? “Taichou, are you ok?” you ask, rather desperately. He takes some time to look up at you, as now his head was hanging in between his knees.
“I- yes, (Name). I’m just tired… are you ok? Don’t you wanna rest a little?” he tells you, with a hint of exhaustion and stress in his words. You bite your lip; you simply wish he could have a least a day to rest but it isn’t up to you.
“I’m ok, Taichou. I can keep going for you, so you can rest” you say, offering yourself, even if your feet hurt and you feel as exhausted as him. “We are going together, (Name). By the way, thank you” he murmurs the last words.
You gasp, and your cheeks become heated. It’s not that Toshiro was rude with you or treat you badly before, but you never hear him say “thank you” to you. “Don’t thank me, Taichou! I’m always here for you” you confess.
Toshiro’s cheeks once again tint into cherry colour, so red and flustered. He has been always a little more forgiving when it comes to you, but you just thought that he treats you this way because of you not being as strong as him. But was it really because of it?
The uncomfortable silence that filled the humid hot air around you soon breaks. Toshiro stands up and trying to avoid your eyes he commands to keep walking. As the sun sets, the night comes and it’s better to rush to find his Zanpakuto spirit. It isn’t really safe to be on such places during the night, and even if he is one of the strongest captains there is no need to expose yourself to evitable dangers.
But, Hyōrinmaru is nowhere to be found and just like the sun hours ago shined bright in the sky now the moon was taking its place. Your captain run up a little hill to take a better look at the valley under it. “I still can’t sense him, so he might be masking his reiatsu… where the hell are you?” he whispers.
The silvery rays of the satellite make Toshiro’s white hair shine in different hues of argentum lights, and the way his Shihakusho flows with the subtle humid breeze hypnotizes you. “Beautiful man…” you think, biting your lip.
A sudden explosion that felt fresh and then icy blew several kilometres from where you are. Black clouds surrounded the sky, and the temperature drops. From extreme heat, to extreme cold.
Snowflakes begin falling from the clouds, intensely, like a snowstorm. In the middle of the summer, of a so exotic hot summer. An icy miracle… You shiver, the summer uniform isn’t enough to cover you and the cold creeps into your bones like stinging blades.
Your captain comes running down the little hill to check on you after the “icy explosion”. “Oi, (Name). Are you ok? Are you hurt?” he asks, suddenly and quickly grabbing your forearm.
“Y-es, Captain. What was that? Why is it snowing?” you ask, confused and evaluating some of the possibilities of why there was a snowstorm all of the sudden.
Toshiro sighs, because he knows too well why this is happening. “Hyōrinmaru, and probably Sode no Shirayuki have created this storm… my Zanpakuto has that ability” he informs you, and you quickly remember that time when he fought against Hallibel.
He seemed to be putting up with the cold pretty well, but you feel like dying of hypothermia shortly. Your teeth chatter, and your skin becomes bumpy all over. Even if you wanted to act like you were ok, you can’t.
And Toshiro notices it.
“Come here, you are gonna freeze” he says and surrounds you with his embrace. He hugs you, so all of the sudden and beautifully you aren’t even aware of this not being a dream. You inhale his scent as your nose gets pressed into the crook of his neck. He smells clean, like freshly out of the shower, and that sends you to heaven.
You are absolutely stunned to speak; you can’t pronounce any word. In fact, you don’t want to. You don’t want to break the hug; you want it to be eternal. Cold or not, you don’t care. If you were to die there, you would do it so happily.
But the storm gets even more intense, surrounded by white gusts of wind you can’t even see pass a few meters. You can sense Toshiro’s reiatsu growing, half annoyed, half understanding he needs to protect you.
“Let’s find shelter” he says, and when he does you realize he has aged just enough to show you his real form. He looks now like a young man, leaving aside his sweet childish façade to more sharp features.
“C-captain” you mumble, amazed by his change. “Heh, don’t be afraid. I just happened to age a little” he says, smirking and killing you with such beautiful gesture.
You let him take you somewhere else. Using his shunpo both of you quickly appear under a little cave the rocks have formed on one of the hills. At least you are covered from the high winds, and as much as he knew he could come back without any problem, he knew he couldn’t leave you alone. Not every person is an ice dragon.
“I should apologize for my Zanpakuto’s behaviour” he says, mortified and looking outside with burning eyes. He is gonna punish Hyōrinmaru… “It’s ok captain, they were probably suffering” you say in between the sounds of your teeth hitting with each other.
Toshiro uses kido to light some flames, even if the winds were enough to turn it off at any moment. He comes closer and sits right next to you. “Come here, you need to warm up” he says, and opens his arms waiting for you to fall over his chest.
You widen your eyes, isn’t he supposed to do something to stop the snow? Why is he asking you to hug him? His Shihakusho now is opened as he has grown and is unable to cover him up entirely.
“Oi, come on. You are gonna die if you don’t do it” he urges you.
“Of course, Toshiro just wants to save my life… this isn’t a romantic situat-“
He suddenly pulls you closer, once again you land over his chest, and his arms snake around your back. Your thoughts were cut short as he squeezes you tightly against his body.
“There, let’s stay like this. He is gonna get tired soon. You are right, Hyōrinmaru was suffering. The moment he feels better with the temperature he will stop. I can’t leave you here on your own, so I prefer to wait and when the climate conditions get better, we will come back, ok?”
“Y-yes, Taichou…” you moan, smiling against his bare chest. Even if he is almost made out of ice, his skin feels warm, warm and like home… After all, and maybe just for some time you will be on the arms of the man that you love.
Some time passes, and both of you, with reddish cold noses look at the sky from inside the little shelter. As if Hyōrinmaru was doing this on purpose, the clouds never covered the moon, and the snowflakes reflect such beautiful light on them. It feels magical and romantic, a fantasy, like fiction, like a romance novel.
“Thank you, Taichou. You shouldn’t hold back for me” you mumble, feeling perhaps like a burden to him. “I shouldn’t… but I want to. I want to protect you, (Name)” he says after clearing his throat, with his icy eyes fixed on the moon. His hand caresses your back up and down and you can’t stop yourself from looking up at his face.
His sharp jaw, his white hair…
Toshiro looked down at you when he noticed your insistent stare. “You don’t believe me?” he asks you, maybe a little troubled as he thinks you aren’t buying the “I want to protect you” part.
“Is not that, Captain… I- I-“ you stutter, maybe if you confess your feelings for him you will be kicked out of the squad… or he will reject you.
But, completely contrary to what you think Toshiro would ever do, he didn’t let you keep trying to say the words he already knew, and instead he planted a sweet peck on the tip of your nose.
“I really, really want to protect you” he whispers, getting closer to your lips. Lips you accept, melting in the sweetest, most warming kiss you have ever experienced in your life… 💖 ~

Over the Years
Tumblr media
Prompts: 'life changes' and 'growth'
Rating: K/General
Setting: begins in their childhood and ends in the ten year time skip.
Synopsis: Momo notices Toshiro's growth across the years.
AN: a collection of short and sweet moment for this month’s @yearoftheotpevent challenge. I thought to do a more metaphorical fic for this one, but I decided go with something literal in the end. Hope you enjoy it!

“What? Is there something on my face?”
Momo can only blink. It had to be because she hasn’t seen him in months, otherwise she would have definitely noticed during her lasy visit.
Toshiro folds his arms. “Seriously, bed-wetter, what is it?”
The dreaded nickname snaps her out of her stupor. “Don’t call me that!”
“Then stop starring!”
“I wasn’t.” She shakes her head. “I’m sorry, it’s just…have you gotten taller?”
It had been almost six months since she last saw him, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that he’ll have grown since then. However, this growth spurt is noticeable compared to others. He’d grown several inches, and now his forehead is in line with her nose. He barely has to tilt his head to meet her gaze. Something about that makes her heart clench in pride, but also nostalgia for times where he was much shorter.
Toshiro rolls his eyes. “So what if I have? Everyone grows taller.”
“Well, yes, but, um…” Momo presses a hand against her lips, trying to stifle the giggles that threaten to bubble up.
He glares and grumbles. “What?!”
“Nothing!” she says around a chuckle. “Please, ignore me! I have to see Ayumi-chan then I’ll –”
“What’s so funny?”
“Honestly, Shiro-chan, it’s nothing!”
“Don’t call me that, bed-wetter Momo!”
He might have gotten taller, but he’s still the same grumpy brat she knows.

She finds Toshiro lying in the grass under a tree, hands behind his head and head tilted back. He might be napping, or, judging by the fact his zanpakuto is at his side, he could be meditating.  notices again weeks before her graduation.
Seeing him like this, with the usual furrow in his brow less prominent and his eyes closed, he almost looks like a different person. It’s different from when she would wake before him and see him still asleep on the many sleepovers she had with him. He’s still a child, older now with some of the roundness in his cheeks and eyes disappearing, but it’s more than that.
He’s using that stealth he once used to jump out and scare her to show his impressive footwork in zanjutsu, and the concentration he once reserved for competing in spinning top tournaments into studying every textbook after classes well before exams.
He’s changed, and she’s barely been there to see it’s full progression. Perhaps that was a downside to choosing to become a Shinigami, she didn’t get to see what had made him change. Why did she want to know such things? He hadn’t changed for the worst, if anything he’s matured.
Momo shakes her head; why is she thinking like this?
The bell sounds off in the distance. It hadn’t stirred Toshiro from his nap or meditation. It wouldn’t do for him to miss any of his classes.
She kneels by his side. “Shiro-chan…” she tries. “Shiro-chan, it’s time to wake up.”
His brow twitches, but he otherwise remains still.
“Shiro-chan, come on,” she says, a bit louder. She gives his shoulder a gentle shake for good measure. “If you don’t wake up, you’ll miss your classes.”
His eyes snap open and he flings himself up. She barely avoided being hit by him, leaning away and almost falling on to her backside. He stares at the ground and takes in deep breaths through his parted lips.
Had she startled him that badly? “S-Shiro-chan?”
He blinks, and after exhaling, looks at her. “Hinamori…”
Momo raises her hands in apology. “I’m sorry, did I frighten you?”
He says nothing, and judging by the lingering haziness in his eyes, he’s still not fully awake.
“I was looking for you, and I found you here. Were you asleep or…” At the second bell alarm, she gasps and scrambles to stand up. “Actually, that’s not important! We’re about to miss our classes if we don’t hurry up!”
That seems to snap Toshiro out of his daze. He’s quick to grab his zanpakuto and rise. Despite
They rush back toward the Academy. “Before, were you taking a nap or meditating?”
To her bewilderment, he considers his answer. “I was medidating.” Then, several steps later, “Why were you looking for me?”
Momo shrugs and grins. “Just wanted to see how you were doing. I’ve been hearing rumors around that the instructors are deeming you a child prodigy.”
“Who said that?!”
“I don’t know, I just overheard some classmates talking about it.”
“Since when do you pay attention to gossip? Besides, it’s not true and it’s not a big deal if it was.”
“But Hitsugaya-kun, it’s an amazing feat!”
Hearing his surname makes him falter, and a faint pink colours his cheeks. She chuckles. “Still not used to it, are you?” she teases.
“S-Shut up!”
"I can go back to calling you 'Shiro-chan' if you'd prefer."
"Absolutely not!" He turns his fast walk into a run, going ahead of her. She laughs as she catches up to him.
When she glances down to avoid a rock in her way, she notices his shoulder is only a couple inches lower than hers.

Ever since he started wearing the haori, Momo can’t tell if he’d grown again or if he’s just standing taller than before.
She wouldn’t be surprised if it’s only the latter. The haori has given him a greater presence, and it’s a piece of his uniform he must wear with the responsibility and respect the role of captain asks of him. She can see it having an effect on him, of wanting other to know he takes his new role seriously and
“Oi, you day dreaming back there?”
Momo almost drops her paperwork and stumble in her step, but is quick to recover and come to a stop. It’s only then she realises she’d been staring at his back while he walked ahead. What had they been talking about again?
“Ah, sorry Hitsugaya-kun, I lost focus.”
“It’s ‘Captain Hitsugaya’ now, Hinamori.” He fully turns to her. “It’s unlike you though. What’s on your mind?”
She tries to not show how much the question startles her. Where once he’d kick the dirt and say something vague to gauge if she was upset, now he just asks her. He’s become more direct in recent years.
Remembering the child he once and seeing how he’s grown to who he is right now makes her smile. She closes the gap between them with a smile.
“It’s nothing. I think I’m just trying to get used to seeing you dressed in a haori.”

Their eyes are almost level. It’s an odd realisation to have after he’s made his apology. Perhaps it’s the catharsis, the relief of having finally spoken to him again after months of absence and knowing neither of them hated or feared the each other.
She wipes away the last tear form her eye on her sleeve. He’d stopped crying long ago, but his eyes are still rimmed red and glassy. She’s only seen him cry three times, and it’s never been like this. She takes his hand.
“How about some tea?” Momo offers.
He only nods and lets her led him to the Fifth Division kitchens.

Around them is the ruins of the palace and their injured comrades being healed. Yhwach had been defeated, and the relief hangs palpable in the air around her. It should be a time of hurried decisions and coordinating how to transport everyone back down to the Soul Society.
But Momo can’t look away from Toshiro, and it seems he can’t look away from her either.
She doesn’t know how long they’ve been standing here, she in confusion and he as if he had been caught doing something he shouldn’t and was awaiting her judgement.
It’s the only time where he stands on the same level as her and she has to crane her neck to look him in the eye. She can’t help but laugh at the absurdity of it.
Toshiro stares down at her as if she’d grown a third eye. “What’s so funny?”
Hearing him speak a slightly deeper voice only adds to the strangeness of the situation. Perhaps she should be in awe or confused by his change in appearance and power. Maybe her immense relief is getting the better of her and it’s making her almost manic.
She calms herself enough to speak between chortles. “I’ve never seen you so tall! How did you get to be like this?”
His eyes widen and his mouth fall agape, making a strangled sound. It does nothing to stop her laughter, and she has to cover her mouth and half turn away.
He comes out his stupor and makes an irritated noise. “Enough of this! I’ll explain later! We have to focus on our duties!”
It would’ve been a sobering reminder had it not been for how he stomps away from her, arms swinging at his sides and shoulders high enough to hide the redness in his cheeks.

Of all things, she only notices he’s grown taller when they both duck under a low hanging branch. Once he could easily walk underneath it and she would have to bow her head slightly to avoid her hair getting caught on the leaves.
She stares at him the whole time, even as she straightens and they continue towards his Granny’s house, only a short distance ahead. Eventually, with a deepened frown, he asks, “What is it?”
Behind him, the orange and red autumn leaves are a stark contrast to his white hair and blue-green eyes. It’s a moment she wishes she could capture, whether it be on her denreishinkai or in her sketchbook.
At her lack of a response, his brows furrow deeper and he comes to a stop. “All right, what is it? Is there something on my face?”
They’re at eye level now. She hasn’t grown an inch in the last four years, but he keeps getting taller. One day, she may really have to start tilting her head back to meet his gaze.
The wind chime on Granny’s veranda reminds her of why they’re here, and she’s quick to start walking again. “No.”
“Then why were you staring?” he asks
“You’ve grown taller,” she tries to say casually. “I only just noticed.”
He rolls his eyes with a scoff and a hint of a smirk. “Is that all?”
“Hey, this is the first we’ve seen each other since the reconstruction efforts began." Despite her indignation, she smiles. "Of course I’m going to notice changes in you after so long.”
