It's simply a requirement that historians must look like mad wizards.

great day, weird day? love the feeling of seeing a friend after a long time and knowing you won't go that long until the next time. being in the paradigm of public knowledge and having it feel maaagical to be surrounded by books and the public radio and the city. worked a long time on an assignment, realized i did it kind of wrong, but sort of don't mind because i had fun anyways? feels weirdly hollow and distant to walk away.
on my mind
"blue hour" dance break version
jfk looking handsome in an ad for a wwii exhibit
coffee on an empty stomach is not a good idea for your brain
scream-singing to "ballad of a homeschooled girl"
noticing the rhythm of the waves, in and out

Hi! I'm sorry if this has already been asked (I'm a very recent follower). But what are history studies in Italy like? I'm a fellow history student and would love to know!
Hello!!
I am not sure if I talked about this in other posts, but don't worry! I'll talk about my own experience in my university of course, but generally for everyone you get a three year degree (the one I am almost over with) and then you can continue with a two years masters degree. Overall the classes are quite personalizable, basically you have a certain number of crediti to have at the end of you university journey (a good way to explain what crediti are is to compare them to the value of the exam, so the mark of a 12 crediti exam has a higher value than one of 6 crediti which means than when at the end of your journey you get your average grade a bigger exam has more weight than a smaller one, this is probably super confusting I hope I was clear enough). In my case I had all these exams to chose from, I just had a few compulsory classes, and in general what you get is like a group of classes to pick from. So for example on my first year I had a medieval history class, but I could choose between four or five different classes with different professors and with slightly different programs. It is of course compulsory to have one exam regarding each historical era, but this way you can pick a course that interests you in the more specific part. This is because these exams tend to be of a high value so you have a general class on the period but you get additional material to study a specific fenomenon, so for example it could be on the econimy of that period, or on a spefic event, and so on. You usaully pick which exam according to your interests in these additional parts. Other historical courses can be more technical so related to the practical work of the historian, how to approach different type of historical sources and so on. You also get a lot of not historical classes, so archeology or art history, anthropology classes and sociology classes, Italian litterature, philosophy, foreign languages, and so on. These are usually divided in different blocks from which you pick what you are more interested in, so at the end of their journey two students can have very different study backgrounds. This possibility to pick from so many options gave me chance to study some incredible subjects I might have not studied, like prehistory, queer history, history of ancient philosophy, anthropology of religions, and much more. If you are interested in the courses I specifically did I could give you a list. In general imagine a guided but very free list to pick from according to your personal interests and your career goals. The masters works more or less the same but of course the clases are more specific, and in general you can get different masters, in my uni for example there's an historical sciences masters which is the one I'll apply to, but there's also a history of religions masters (which is also super fascinating, and hopefully I'll manage to sneak a couple of their classes in my own study journey, because you can get a couple of courses in your own journey even if these classes technically belong to another degree!).
This is more or less the shell of how everything works, then if you are interested in how the classes and exams are, we have the majority of our exams as oral tests, I think I only did three written exams in my whole journey. You usually have a double option on the material depending on whether you go to classes or you study on your own (in this latter case you have more books to read and study for your exam). The quantity and type of material changes a lot depending on the professors, but you normally get at least three books to study (more often than not the materials are quite disproportionate to the value of the class, at least in my experience). Let's say you get a lot of non fiction reading. I have been told by people who are not in the history course, but who had to get history classes, that apparently history profs here give a lot of additional value to the oral exposition in exams. Being very used to the technical vocabulary and the type of exam I don't really notice it, because it's an habit at this point, but that is one of the generally required things apparently. Then the required skills and type of knowledge can change a lot depending on the professor (yes there's still some profs who think the important studd is learning by hart a bunch of dates, I clearly do not agree with this memory based approach but that's another subject).
I think I wrote everything that came to mind in order to give you more or less an idea of how it's like. I hope I wasn't too confusing (I've had a long day and I am realizing my thought might not always make sense, if I was too messy just let me know and I'll try to give a better answer, sorry). (also I did not reread this whole thing so I am sorry in advance for the typos etc). I am now curious to know how history studies are where you live, and what were some of your favourite classes?? It's always nice to talk to a fellow history student! I hope you'll have a lovely day/night!!!

a concerning amount of witchblr will be like "um actually new years was stolen by europeans from the ancient god scroobus mcdoobus" and then you actually try to research scroobus mcdoobus and it turns out he was invented in the 1940s by a conspiracy theorist who powdered every meal with ketamine and thinks that queer people are reincarnated fish

The first week of university has started again and I started my new Master Public History. I am very curious where this will lead me and I'm trying to be more concentrated on my studies from now on.

i love studying. i love writing. i love reading. i love learning languages. i love doing mathematics. i love wandering over some particular sum and trying to come up with formulas to solve it. i love physics. i love biology. i love chemistry. i love history. i love literature. i love learning.
not to achieve the perfect grades ever. but it just amazes me that there's so much to know and learn and write and read about in the universe. my curiosity wouldn't get enough of it.

13 october 2023.
wow taking myself out of my dining room to do work changes the game! i felt very focused and entirely joyful in the work. maybe had something to do with the break in between to grab lunch w my dad, which doesn't sound like a big deal but is a big deal. went on a little turn around the woods, just me and the trees that seemed to be waving hello. hello there, trees.
on my mind:
edgar allan poe is brilliant and sad and funny.
listening to music i loved ten years ago in certain moods is melancholy, but today made me appreciate what used to embarrass me.
reading lots about henry david thoreau for uni! got a mid-nineteenth century thing going on i guess
when you go out and do things it kind of makes the process of doing the same tomorrow less scary. baby steps up the stairs.

Look at these gorgeous 1950's wallpapers! The site I'm interning at has gone through many phases over the course of a century and some change- these are all of the wallpapers I saw in the upstairs. Unfortunately due to the material the house was constructed with and the natural humidity of our area the wallpaper is in great disrepair.
The upstairs is part of an ongoing conservation effort- but there is only so much that an underfunded nonprofit can do at one time.
