Bat: Next one’s probably a little predictable.

Bat: But I heard ya can never have too many of that particular thang.

Brand: -Curious-

Shadow: -Much curious now-

Bonnie: -Can’t help but grin-

[He opens the next present, and–]

[Well, no wonder Bat said it would be predictable.]

[Inside were about three dozen throwing stars, smaller than your average ones, but still very sharp–and shaped like traditional stars, at that–five-pointed.]

Shadow: [!]

Shadow: -INSTANTLY captivated-

Bat: I got these custom made. Not that hard t’ make, apparently, if you get a size small enough.

Brand: -Immediately grabs one-

[And of course, Brand can’t resist the urge to try them out and show off in the process. He easily spins some of them around his fingers, and though he is pleased to learn that they are very much lightweight, he resists the urge to use a nearby tree as target practice.]

Shadow: -…Also reaches over—-

[Shadow, meeting no resistance, takes the rest of them.]

[The display that follows, by nature or by virtue of Brand’s restraint, surpasses that of his sensei.

The stars seem to practically appear and disappear in his hands, coming in pairs, fanning out in perfect symmetry, held and rotating at different speeds—

This was his element, and it showed. For this was a display of years of dedicated study and practice on TOP of innate mastery that reached into ancient days and the core of his being.]

Shadow:

Shadow: -Very, very happy data and even a noticeably happy expression-

Bonnie: -Rather impressed but also now quite sure he wants to be careful about bringing Shadow out of daydreaming while the space ninja is still holding Brandish’s presents-

[The Robot Master certainly seems to be preoccupied with the throwing stars, that’s for sure.]

[Ping!]

Beck: -Somewhat scoots in between Shadow and Brand-

Beck: -I wanna try–

Pyro: -Oh boy-

[Absolutely no response from Shadow whatsoever.]

Brand: Ah– -…Very well, you may hold one-

Beck:

Brand: -Looks on at Shadow- (…Heh, {almost don’t want to disturb him, he seems so content…})

Beck: -Oooo- -Now equally transfixed in how Shadow is handling the stars-

Beck: -ATTEMPTS to try and copy that-

[…It’s obviously not as perfect OR as fast as Shadow is with them, but it wasn’t terrible either.]

Brand: -This isn’t Pride™ data, what are you talking about-

[Felix grins and uses sign language.]

Felix: “Pleased with your students, Master Brandish?”

Brand: {More or less, mm…} -Obviously means well, though-

Brand: -Soft ping-

Beck: [?]

Shadow: -Blinks-

[He lowers his hands and looks up.]

[It becomes obvious by a change in his eyes that he’s slowly coming out of personal distraction and realizing that everyone’s staring at him as he’s holding onto some of Brandish’s presents.]

Shadow: […]

Shadow: -Embarrassed- -Significantly so-

Shadow: -Hands back the stars with as much of a front of dignity as he can muster-

Brand: -Very much amused but tries not to let that show TOO much in his data-

[MN.7 to DWN-024] //: {Beck was very interested in how you handled them, by the way.}

Beck: -ALSO hands back the star he borrowed-

Shadow: ^^;;

[He had never really considered himself as important.

For a long time, people had treated him as a violent inconvenience. And even after that changed…

Well, Fr. Cruz was different, of course. He was a spiritual shepherd, so of course he didn’t see Shadow as inconsequential.

Brandish never treated him as unimportant, either. Even in the very beginning, when Shadow had been so hostile to him at first…]

[…But that didn’t change the fact that Beck would always be the most important and best student.]

[It was actually impossible for anyone else to be better than Beck in that regard, because Beck had the ability to attune to Brandish—as with all his siblings—in a way that no one else could match.

Shadow always knew that he would never be able to be in the same tier.

And he had been fine with that. He was grateful to be granted what he had.

It still didn’t change the fact that he wasn’t used to seeing himself as important.

He’d always been secondary, lesser, or…]

[…subservient…]

Shadow: -Headache, bad BAD headache—-

[Oops. That was probably a sign he shouldn’t think on that too hard any longer.

He tried to shake off the dizziness and remember what he had just been talking about.]

Shadow: …

Shadow: -Thoughtfully- 自分を大切な人とは思っていなかったと思います。

[Not that he hated himself, no.

Just that… it had taken him several years to develop much of a personality. And between life as a fugitive, instruction as a second-tier student, and of subservient rank within the family hierarchy…]

Shadow: わかりにくいです。
