Chapter Two: Rest Assured
Here's the second chapter of my ongoing fic titled 'Wake Up, Keidima!', a MHA alternate universe where an OC of mine ends up in Class 1-A. If you'll allow me to winge a bit - in the dub (which I watch), the names of all the students have been flipped. You see, Japanese naming conventions go like (Family Name) (Given Name), whereas in the West, it's the opposite. In the dub of MHA, they flipped the names to make it make sense for a Western Audience™ (Iida Tenya became Tenya Iida, for instance). This is very enfuriating, because I've named my OC Eivi Keidima (Family name Given name), while all the other characters are (Given name, Family name) as in the show. This really bugs me but whatever. Just keep that in mind going forward, alright? Keidima's name is the Japanese version (it's too late to change it now) and everyone else has the English version. Okay? Okay, now onto the fic:
Word Count: 6239
"You... did what?" the old man grumbled, adjusting his hearing aid.
Jodonaki cleared his throat and spoke up for his sister. "She got into UA, Grandpa!"
"Oh, UA! I'm so proud of you, sweetie! Mazel Tov!" Grandpa Eivi Gadazi furrowed his brow and stared into the middle distance. "What's UA again?"
The twins sighed, smiling. "All Might's alma mater," Keidima said. After getting the letter, the siblings ran to tell their only legal guardian as fast as possible.
"Oh, All Might! That newbie-" Grandpa Gadazi scowled and spat, "I used to be a pro hero, y'know! They don't make heroes like they used to! Why, in my day, I'd be able to defeat All Might in combat with my pinkie finger!"
By that point, the twins were giggling behind their hands. "I-Ihi'm sure you could, Grandpa!" Jodonaki managed to say.
Grandpa Gadazi was a short man and ancient by all accounts. His bald head, once full of curly orange hair, was covered in liver spots, and his whole face sagged with wrinkles. Despite this, he was quick with a witty retort and had an endearing proclivity to wax nostalgic about the 'Good Ole Days' where he was one of the top ten Pro Heroes (the number would change every time he told the story, however). Nevertheless, the money he made as a hero kept the lights on. He wore a white button-up shirt and a pair of brown pants secured way too high on his torso with a black belt. His shoes had been custom-made for one to be higher off the ground than the other because he had gotten into a fight with a villain a few decades prior, necessitating an emergency hip surgery, making one leg permanently longer. He couldn't possibly care for himself, needing his grandson to ensure he was adequately fed and dressed.
As it turns out, Jodonaki never bothered applying to a high school. He had said it was because he already knew how to use his quirk and knew everything he needed to know about the world, but Keidima understood that he needed to stay home to take care of Grandpa Gadazi's failing health. She also understood, using that premonition all twins develop toward each other, that he was deeply disappointed with his lot in life, but he hid it from his sister.
"Y'know, your grandmother had an incredible quirk," the old man leaned back in his rocking chair, smiling into the middle distance. The twins looked at each other, and Jodonaki smiled as he got up.
"I'm gonna make him some soup," he whispered as he left the room.
"She always beat me in a fight, the old bobcat! And believe you me, my pride was on the line, so I wasn't going easy on her!" Grandpa Gadazi's eyes came back into focus. "I always knew you'd follow in her footsteps. She had chutzpah. Have I ever told you how much you look like her?"
"Only all the time, Grandpa."
"Hm, yes, I must have told you before. Sorry, Keidi-cat, my memory isn't as it used to be."
"I know, Grandpa," she said with a smirk.
Gadazi huffed and leaned forward, looking Keidima dead in the eyes. "Being a hero is serious business, young lady. Your grandmother died saving my life, leaving me to raise your father alone. He was a hero, too, as was your mother. They never even survived long enough to go on their honeymoon!"
Keidima winced and looked down at the ground, and Grandpa Gadazi leaned back in his chair again.
"I'm not telling you all this to scare you, Keidi-cat. I need you to understand what's at stake when you go out there to fight villainy. You not only endanger yourself but also your friends and your loved ones. Whole future generations will be affected by the choices you make today." He looked over at the rocking chair next to his, which was always empty, and with a shaking hand, gently rubbed its armrest. "Don't forget who you're fighting for, alright, young lady?"
Keidima looked up into his face and saw the old man tearing up. She extended a hand to his knee and nodded with determination. "I won't, Grandpa. I promise."
Jodonaki returned with a bowl of ramen and a pair of Gadazi's favorite chopsticks. "Sorry, it seems like someone-" he glared at Keidima playfully, "has eaten all the soup! So I just made you some ramen, Grandpa."
"Oh, splendid! Spectacular day!" The old man's countenance instantly lit up as he gratefully took the bowl and chopsticks, and Jodonaki retook his spot on the carpet next to his sister. "So, Keidima! What kind of hero do you want to be?"
"What do you mean?"
Grandpa Gadazi was shoveling noodles into his gumless mouth as if he hadn't eaten a meal since '75. "I mean," more loud slurping, "do you wanna be a hero that goes in guns blazing? Do you wanna be like your old man here?" He thumped his chest proudly before choking on a noodle. Jodonaki jumped up and began hitting his back as Keidima looked down at the carpet, thinking about her answer.
"Wehell? Don't keep me waiting, Keidi-cat. I'm on the edge of my seat here!" Grandpa Gadazi coughed up the noodle but wasted no time in continuing to eat. Instead of sitting down again, Jodonaki decided it'd be better to stay standing in case anything else happened, and he looked down at his sister curiously.
"I just want to be a hero that people feel safe around. I want to be strong and fearless, but more than anything, I want to be a presence that people are comforted by. I want to be like a warm blanket, protecting people from the biting cold of a hostile world and bringing peace to the hearts of those I defend. Villains have gotten more insidious as time goes on, which leads to heroes needing to resort to more drastic measures to maintain justice in our society. The world is harsh and scary, and I want to comfort those who trust me." Keidima looked up and smiled at her two listeners. "Like you!"
Jodonaki smiled as Grandpa Gadazi clapped enthusiastically. "Bravo, Keidi-cat! What a speech!" He leaned forward with a chuckle. "Just be sure not to use that quirk of yours to get out of family gatherings, eh?"
The trio giggled, and the old man handed his empty bowl to his grandson. "Delicious, as usual!" Gadazi exclaimed, and Jodonaki patted his grandfather on the head as he left the room again to do the dishes. His expression quickly changed as he began getting up from his chair, fishing for his cane on the floor, which Keidima handed him. Grandpa Gadazi motioned for her to follow him, and he walked over to his bureau, pulling out a drawer and opening a secret compartment within. He drew a small wooden box out of this compartment and blew the dust off it.
"Here, sit down, Grandpa." Keidima patted the bed, and Grandpa Gadazi grunted in agreement. They sat together, and the young girl looked eagerly at the box as her grandfather slowly opened it, revealing a small, steel wristband. He smiled wide and tried to pick it up but yelped and pulled his hand back suddenly upon touching it. "Woah, are you okay, Grandpa?"
"Yes, yes, Keidi-cat, I'm alright. This wristband belonged to your grandmother. She had a fire-based quirk, you know. Here, feel."
Keidima laid her hand on the metal, gasping and shuddering. "I-it's warm!"
"For you? That's interesting. It's always been scalding whenever I hold it. Feels like I'm touching a steam iron. But you say it's warm..." Grandpa Gadazi hummed in thought and finally handed her the box. "Here, put it on."
The young girl picked up the band and clipped it around her right wrist. The metal was warm, but it reminded her of sitting next to a roaring fireplace, soothing and cozy.
"How does it feel?"
"Comforting."
"Then..." Grandpa Gadazi smiled and stroked a lock of bright red hair out of Keidima's face, "I believe you were meant to have it. You carry her with you now." He looked deep into his granddaughter's face. "You look... so much like her, you know."
Keidima smiled wide and held the bracelet, feeling its warmth. "Thank you, Grandpa. I'll make her proud."
"I believe you already have, young lady." Suddenly, the old man winced and put a hand over his abdomen. "I just... hope I'll still be here to see you become a top hero, just like your grandmother."
"And you?"
"Yeah, yeah, me as well. But I know you'll be so much better than me. I see it in your eyes. It's the same fire that your grandmother had."
"Thank you, Grandpa. I know I won't fail you."
"Oh, so do I!" Grandpa Gadazi laid back on the bed, making all sorts of grunting noises as he arranged himself. He didn't need Keidima's quirk to instantly fall asleep, snoring loudly.
Keidima patted his head as she stood. Looking down at her wrist, the bright, shiny steel made her smile. "I won't let you down. None of you."
-
"Costumes!"
Keidima let out a yelp, jarring her from her daydreaming. She refused to admit she had almost fallen asleep at the kitchen table. "W-whahat about costumes?" she asked.
Jodonaki gave her a funny look. "Uh, you need one, obviously! A hero costume! See, I went to the Town Hall and got you some paperwork for it."
"A hero costume? I hadn't thought about it..."
She scratched her head. "Honestly, I wasn't planning on having a hero costume."
"What! Nonsense! You need a costume, Bedhead!"
"Fine, fine, if it'll make you happy." Keidima pulled the small stack of papers towards her side of the table and began to fill out her basic information. "How tall am I now?"
Jodonaki studied her a bit. "Few inches taller than me, so... 5'10"? Ballpark?"
"Sure, we'll go with that, Jodo," she yawned.
Her brother was practically bouncing in his seat. "I can't believe it! It's really happening. You're becoming a hero, and you're getting a costume!"
"You're right. It is certainly hard to believe..." She chuckled at Jodonaki's enthusiasm. "But I'd be lying if I said I wasn't at least a little excited."
Finally, they turned the page and got to the design section.
She hummed in thought as she nibbled the end of her pencil. "Let's see... Are there any special concerns we need to consider for this?"
"Well, to activate your quirk, you just have to focus on something really hard, right?"
"Yeah, but visual and tactile contact help a bunch."
"How about a mask that looks like a sleep mask? I think it'd match the aesthetic."
"Then I'd need holes cut into them, maybe glass put in. Not a bad idea." Keidima began writing down their ideas, sketching the mask. "Okay, what else?"
"Gloves, maybe?"
"They'd have to be fingerless, but yes, good idea." They looked at everything they had so far. Then, Keidima began writing something down.
Jodonaki looked up at his sister. "Wait, you're not planning on going into battle in pajamas, are you?"
"It fits the theme! They'll be green, soft, and fuzzy, with little pockets for hiding snacks. Maybe we'll add a fuzzy pink sleeping cap. Yehes!" Keidima wrote faster and faster, giggling a little as it came together. "Ahahand! Ahahand dohohon't fohohorget-!! Dohon't forget the tactical combat bunny slippers!!" Keidima squealed with delight as she laughed at the situation, almost falling off her chair.
"No, don't write that down!"
"I'm writing it down!" She laughed all the harder as she wrote down the idea.
"You're gonna look ridiculous!"
"Maybe that's my strategy, hmmmmm? I wanna throw them off their rhythm!"
"Bedhead!" Jodo exclaimed before falling into another coughing fit. He yanked out his inhaler and breathed deeply.
"Fine, no bunny slippers - I'll write down a pair of combat sneakers. I don't want anything flashy because that's just not what my quirk is like."
"Okay, but I need to insist on at least some level of protection. Some armor, at least some padding."
"Good idea, but we'll keep it minimal." She underlined that word twice on the form. "I want to focus on mobility and dodging, dragging out the fight as much as possible. The longer I make a fight go on, the more likely my quirk will win out. Knee pads, elbow pads, shin guards, and padding in the gloves but all concealed under the outer pajamas. If some mean bastard comes running at me, I want to be able to dodge without hurting myself."
"Also, remember to put your hair up in a ponytail during fights so it doesn't obstruct your vision," Jodonaki said, pointing at the drawn mask. "But what is your signature piece?" he asked.
"My what?"
"Y'know, the thing that every hero has that's unique. It brings the costume together."
Keidima leaned back in her chair. "I have no idea. Maybe a stuffed animal?"
"No, you can't make that a viable tool in combat."
"Not with that attitude."
Jodonaki suppressed the giggle that wanted to come out and said, "What about a capturing weapon? Like Eraserhead uses?"
"Who's that?"
"Never mind, just focus on this. What if you used a blanket like a grappling hook?"
Keidima looked at her brother, thinking it over. "Is there a material that'd be that strong? And I'd have to learn how to use it... But... it'd be better to learn how to use it and have it with me during a fight. I don't exactly have a very combat-oriented quirk. Yeah... yeah, good idea." She drew the blanket, sketching a bright pink crescent moon in the middle. "What do you think?" she asked, handing the form to Jodonaki.
He stared at it before nodding his head. "I think it looks good. Besides, the form says you can alter your costume later." Jodonaki stood, picking up the form and his handbag, gesturing for Keidima to come up. "Let's drop off these forms, then we can get some last-minute back-to-school shopping done!"
Keidima smiled, nodding as she got up. "I also need a refill on my prescription. No way in hell am I going into my first week of UA without them."
-
The last days of March flew by like a fleeting dream. The beginning of April came quickly, and with it, her first day of school at UA High.
Keidima was ready to go, but Jodonaki insisted on doing his usual series of 'pre-flight checks.'
"Did you take your meds?"
"Yes."
"Did you put on clean socks?"
"Of course I did."
"Did you pack your backpack?"
"No."
"Bedhead."
"Yeah, I packed it. Last night, remember?"
Jodonaki sighed with a smirk as he looked at her hair. "Maybe we should have it be just a little neater."
"Jodo, my boy, you're gonna make the hero-in-training late!" Grandpa Gadazi called from the couch, making her brother grumble.
"I'm just... worried about you, Keidima." He looked at her earnestly, smiling a little. "But, all the same, I need you to know how proud of you I am." His eyes welled up with tears, and Keidima hugged him tightly.
"Save it for when I become a Pro Hero, alright, Jodo?"
He sniffled softly and grinned. "Will do. Now go learn how to save the world!"
"I will!" With that, Keidima turned and ran to UA as fast as she could.
-
She had found her locker rather quickly and looked down at her information card, then over at her map, trying not to bump into any students. "Class 1-A should be right around... here!"
She looked up right as she bumped into another student. "Sorry, I- Mina? We've gotta stop meeting like this, bestie!"
Mina turned and gasped, hugging Keidima tightly as she pulled her friend into the classroom. "You got in! I'm so friggin proud of you!"
"Same goes for you! I'm so glad I won't be starting with no friends. I have you!"
"And me, I'd hope." From behind Ashido stepped a certain smirking red-haired boy.
"Eijiro!!! I was hoping I'd see you!" Keidima practically jumped at Eijiro Kirishima, hugging him like a koala, which made him yelp as he gently set her down.
"Please go to your seats! The teacher is bound to appear at any moment!" a loud and stiff voice came from behind them. Turning, Keidima saw a tall, thin boy with dark blue hair and square glasses.
She chuckled and nodded, making a little bow. "Yes sir, mister sir!"
"It's Tenya Iida to you!"
She giggled softly as she went to seat #19 in the back of class, much to her delight. "Maybe I could catch some Z's back here without the teacher noticing." Little did she know that she was followed the whole way to her desk by the uptight chatterbox.
"And you don't have your hair brushed! Don't you know what kind of school we're attending? Your tie is crooked! How will this class succeed if we can't properly tie a tie? Look at your posture! You're slouching! And you, will you get your feet off the desk?" Tenya turned and walked over to an ash-blonde boy with his legs crossed over the table.
"Oh, thank goodness he left me alone. That's the same boy I saw from the entrance exam, with all the explosions. At least he's taking up that guy's attention."
Keidima must have looked somewhat shell-shocked after the confrontation and looked over at a tall girl beside her, who had a concerned expression. "Are you alright?" the girl asked.
"Yeah, I'm alright. Nothing I haven't heard before," Keidima giggled nervously, rubbing the back of her neck.
The girl extended a hand. "Momo Yaoyorozu."
"Eivi Keidima." She shook the hand gladly and looked up to the door to see the green-haired boy talking with the gravity girl.
"Have you seen the teacher for this class?" Keidima asked.
Momo replied softly, "No, I haven't. Have you?"
"No, I..." Her focus was drawn to a man suddenly appearing in a big, yellow sleeping bag at the doorway.
"Hello, I'm Shota Aizawa. Your teacher."
"You're the man I spoke to on the street the other day when we did the entrance exam!" Keidima couldn't stop herself from blurting out, shooting to her feet. She heard a snicker from her right and saw the blonde-haired boy from before (Denki Kaminari, she soon learned) mouth the words, "he certainly looks like he's been on the street," to Eijiro, eliciting a muffled giggle.
Mr. Aizawa's eyes focused on hers. "Yes, we interacted briefly. Don't speak out of turn, Miss Eivi."
With a squeak, Keidima sat back down at her desk, pursing her lips, and got another empathetic look from Momo. The sleepy girl held onto her bracelet, comforting herself with its warmth.
"Right, let's get to it. Put these on and head outside." Mr. Aizawa held out gym uniforms for them.
-
"My size is wrong, again." Keidima huffed as she pulled down on her uniform. "This is ridiculous."
Momo and Mina giggled behind their hands as they walked to the grounds together. As the students walked, Keidima made it a goal to know the names of as many others as possible so that she'd be better able to fit in.
Arriving on the field, the students gathered in a crowd before Mr. Aizawa. "Today, you will be undergoing a quirk assessment test."
"What? A quirk assessment test?" the students asked in disbelief.
Uraraka spoke up, saying, "But orientation! We're gonna miss it!" Keidima mumbled in agreement.
"If you really wanna make the big leagues, you can't waste time on pointless ceremonies." Aizawa looked at them all like children, almost scornfully. Keidima gasped softly. She had been a little excited about orientation. "Here at UA, we're not tethered to traditions. That means I get to run my class however I see fit." Keidima gulped. "You've been taking standardized tests most of your lives. But you never got to use your Quirks in physical exams before. The country's still trying to pretend we're all created equal by not letting those with the most power excel. It's not rational. One day, the Ministry of Education will learn."
Keidima looked down. "What a hard-ass... and he seemed so friendly before."
"Bakugo," Mr. Aizawa began again, looking at the ash-blonde boy. "You managed to get the most points on the entrance exam. What was your farthest distance throw with a softball in Junior High?"
Katsuki thought momentarily, then said, "Sixty-four meters, I think."
"Not a bad throw at all. I think I could throw seventy, but that's only because I played softball in middle school."
Mr. Aizawa motioned him to come forward. "Right. Try doing it with your quirk."
Katsuki stepped forward into a circle drawn on the dirt, taking the softball from Mr. Aizawa's hand.
"Anything goes, just stay in the circle. Go on. You're wasting our time."
"All right, man, you asked for it." Katsuki rubbed his shoulder a bit, and suddenly, a massive explosion rang out as he threw the ball as hard as he could. Keidima let out a yelp and clamped a hand over her mouth.
Aizawa didn't even flinch. "All of you need to know your maximum capabilities. It's the most rational way of figuring out your potential as a pro hero." He held up the tracker in his hand, showing the class what it read: '705.2 meters.'
Keidima gasped and nudged Mina. "That's amazing! This'll be fun, using our quirks like this," she whispered, to which her pink friend nodded enthusiastically. All around her, students were saying something similar.
Mr. Aizawa stared at them all disapprovingly. "So this looks fun, huh? You have three years here to become a hero. You think it's all gonna be games and playtime? Idiots," he hissed. "What did he just call me-?" Keidima indignantly thought as she stood up straight. "Today, you'll compete in eight physical tests to gauge your potential. Whoever comes in last has none and will be expelled immediately."
"Huh?" Keidima's eyes bulged out of her head in shock. The other students didn't take it well either.
"Like I said, I get to decide how this class runs. Understand? If that's a problem, you can head home right now." Mr. Aizawa looked around at each student, silently judging their expressions.
"Great... How the hell can I use my quirk to give myself an advantage here? It'd be rude of me to make the others sleepy so that I do better by comparison. I'm just gonna have to rely on my physical abilities... which are lacking."
Ochaco again spoke up. "You can't send one of us home! I mean, we just got here! Even if it wasn't the first day, that isn't fair!" Keidima nodded in agreement.
"Oh, and you think natural disasters are?" Mr. Aizawa asked, making the sleepy hero-in-training tilt her head in confusion. "Or power‐hungry villains? Hm? Or catastrophic accidents that wipe out whole cities? No, the world is full of unfairness. It's a hero's job to try to combat that unfairness. To be a pro, you must push yourself to the brink. For the next three years, UA will throw one terrible hardship after another at you. So, go beyond. Plus Ultra‐style. Show me it's no mistake that you're here."
"I just have to keep up. I'm already pretty spry. I have to land in the middle of the pack. Some of these other kids have quirks that won't help much here, like me. With any luck, I'll end up with some wiggle room."
"Now then. We're just wasting time by talking. Let the games begin."
-
A fifty-meter dash.
Keidima crouched on the start line and looked over to her left, seeing what appeared to be an empty gym uniform floating in the air. "Hey! Toru Hagakure, right? Or a ghost, maybe?"
The invisible girl giggled. "And you're Keidima, right? What's your quirk again?"
Mr. Aizawa cleared his throat. "Quit wasting time. On your marks..."
"Best of luck, Toru," Keidima prepared to sprint as fast as possible.
"Get set."
"Yeah, you as well! Chat later," Toru said quickly.
A whistle sounded, and both girls flung themselves forward, running as fast as they could, Keidima pulling ahead by a meter. "It's just running two bases. Take first, take second. The ball's in the outfield, but I don't have time to spare. I've run this distance countless times!" With one final push, Keidima sped across the finish line, quickly followed by Toru.
"6.46 seconds! 6.91 seconds!" A cheerful robotic voice said.
Gasping for breath, Keidima skidded to a halt and turned to the invisible girl with a smile. "Not a bad time at all! You're pretty fast!"
"Whew! I wasn't at all ready to be doing this sort of thing today-!" The two girls walked to the side to clear the way for the next pair. "I should be training with you!"
"No, that'd be a terrible idea. I'd just put you to sleep."
"Aw, I'm sure you're not that boring!" She felt Toru give her a comforting pat on the shoulder.
"No, I- never mind," Keidima giggled.
-
Grip strength.
"What does this have to do with your athletic ability?" Mina asked nobody in particular.
Keidima held onto the machine as tight as possible, but to her dismay, it read '48.4 kg,' making the girl sigh in exasperation. "At some point, spite must become a factor when they make these tests."
-
Standing long jump.
"You ever done one of these, Keidima?" Denki asked, looking behind him in line. Keidima shook her head. "Ah, it's nothin' scary. Just jump!"
"Thanks. I'll try to remember that." Keidima chuckled as she watched the boy jump as far as possible at the whistle. She stepped forward as Denki got off the sand, and when she heard the whistle, she clenched her teeth and jumped.
"195 centimeters!" the peppy bot announced. She quickly got out of the way and felt a gentle elbow in her ribs, making her squeak. Keidima looked up as Eijiro smiled.
"Not a bad distance."
"Compared with everyone else here, it's not great either."
-
Repeated side steps.
Mr. Aizawa reset the stopwatch. "Go ahead, Miss Eivi."
Keidima grinned, forcing her mind to think optimistically. "This is easy. It's just back and forth but a lot and really quickly."
She ended up tripping at the end, falling onto her face.
-
The softball throw.
Keidima walked into the circle and clenched the softball hard in her hand. She leaned back, threw it with all the strength she could muster, and immediately leaned back upon hearing something in her shoulder pop. "Ouch. That sucked."
"Little under seventy meters." Mr. Aizawa sounded almost bored.
"Damn. I gotta get back into shape." Keidima continued rubbing her shoulder as she walked back to the other students. After her, the boy with the green hair stepped up.
"If Midoriya doesn't shape up soon, he's the one going home," Tenya observed.
"Huh? Of course, he is. He's a Quirkless loser." Katsuki spat. Keidima looked over at him with one eyebrow raised. "Not only is he mean, he's also wrong. There's no way a kid could get into the hero course without a quirk."
Tenya spoke up for her. "He has a Quirk. Did you not hear about what he did in the entrance exam?"
Izuku stepped forward, held the ball close, and with a face that registered pure determination, he threw the ball as hard as he could.
"Forty-six meters!" the mechanical voice spoke. The boy stood there, frozen.
"Oh no, poor guy..." Keidima mumbled.
Izuku looked at his hands. "What gives? I was trying to use it just now."
"I erased your Quirk." All eyes turned to Mr. Aizawa, whose hair was standing on end. "The judges for this exam were not rational enough. Someone like you should never be allowed to enroll at this school."
"What?" Keidima was about to step forward, but Momo gently squeezed her shoulder, holding her back. Mr. Aizawa paid her no mind.
"Ah! Those goggles. I know you!" Izuku shouted suddenly. "You can look at someone and cancel out their powers. The Erasure Hero. Eraserhead!"
Keidima looked down at the dirt. "Where have I heard that name before...? It's familiar."
Mr. Aizawa's scarf suddenly shot out, latching around Izuku and pulling him close to his teacher. He began talking with the green-headed boy in a low tone but harshly. Keidima couldn't make out what he was saying but could read Izuku's face well enough to know none was kind.
"I've returned your impractical quirk. Take your final throw. Hurry and get it over with." Mr. Aizawa's hair went down again, and his scarf released Izuku.
"I wonder if our teacher gave him some advice," Tenya said softly.
"I hope so." Keidima looked at Izuku, hoping beyond hope that the poor boy wasn't about to be sent home.
Izuku stepped into the circle and threw the ball again. Instead of the wimpy throw like last time, the boy shouted with all his might, and the ball shot away faster than a bullet, making Keidima squeak and jump into Momo.
"Mr. Aizawa... You see?" Izuku clenched his fist, showing a wholly broken finger. "I'm still standing!"
"705.3 meters!" the robot said.
"His finger appears to be broken now. Just like in the exam. This quirk is very odd." Tenya looked deep in thought.
"Maybe it transfers his body into energy? Like using up all the possible energy in his cells?" Keidima asked.
"No, even if that were the case, there shouldn't be a way he could throw a ball that far," Tenya mumbled, furrowing his brow.
Suddenly, next to them, Katsuki ran towards Izuku, screaming, "Deku, you bastard! Tell me how you did that, or you're dead!"
"He's gonna kill him-!" Keidima extended an arm, activating her quirk and focusing as hard as possible. However, Mr. Aizawa's scarf was faster and wrapped around Katsuki in a flash.
"What? Why the hell is your damn scarf so strong?" Katsuki growled.
"Because it's a capture weapon made of carbon fiber and a special metal alloy. Stand down." Mr. Aizawa glared at the boy. "Jodo said that earlier. That's where I remember the name Eraserhead from!" Keidima thought. "It'd be wise to avoid making me use my quirk so much. It gives me serious dry eye," the teacher said. Finally, he released his scarf, but Katsuki slowly sank to the ground, unconscious.
Mr. Aizawa gasped in shock before quickly looking over at Keidima in realization. Her arm was still extended, stretched stiff, and her eyes hadn't blinked or moved from Katsuki.
"Miss Eivi, please, the situation is handled. You're gonna put him in a coma."
Keidima felt a hand on her shoulder and snapped out of her haze. Turning, she saw Mina's nod and slowly lowered her arm, rubbing her eyes and groaning.
"So that's her quirk. I was wondering..." someone off to her right said softly. Mr. Aizawa walked forward and carried the explosive boy back to the group.
"Ribbet, is he dead-?" someone else murmured.
"H-he'll be fine. He's just taking a power nap-!" Keidima stammered, reassuring her classmates. "We all need to take a little rest sometimes." She giggled softly behind her hand, and some of the other students chuckled along with her.
Katsuki let out a little groan as someone nudged him awake. "What-?"
Mr. Aizawa mumbled something to him, and he nodded, rubbing his head. A twinge of fear went through Keidima as she realized he wouldn't be pleased with her for humiliating him in front of his classmates. Then, the teacher stood up and walked to his observation area again.
"You're wasting my time now. Whoever's next can step up."
Izuku ran back into the crowd, and for some reason, Katsuki seemed focused on him and not Keidima. "I wonder why he doesn't seem angry at me? He doesn't seem like the put-together type."
"That's a pretty powerful quirk," Tenya said, looking impressed.
Keidima looked at him but yawned. "No, not yet, it isn't. Lotta drawbacks."
-
Mr. Aizawa looked at his tablet. "All right, time to give you your results. I've ranked you all from best to worst. You should probably have a good idea of your standing already. I'll pull up the whole list. It's not worth going over each individual's score."
Mina squeezed Keidima's hand gently as they looked at the screen, simultaneously comforting her nerves and keeping her awake. Using her quirk on Katsuki had drained her a lot, and it was all she could do to stay awake for the final three tests. If it weren't for Mina slapping her calves during the sit-up test, she would have passed out. "Isn't my fault it's a good sleeping position."
"Keidima! Look, you got 11th!" Mina shook her, and Keidima jumped up and down in delight.
"Woo! Average!" She hugged her friend tightly and looked back up at the board. "You got ninth!"
"You definitely would have beaten me if you hadn't used your quirk earlier."
"I couldn't help it. My body acted before my brain did."
"And I bet your body was pretty upset with itself after that long-distance run!"
Keidima groaned. "Oh, goodness, don't even talk to me about that." She had thrown up.
Mina pointed back up at the board. "Look, Izuku's last."
Sure enough, in 20th place was Izuku Midoriya. "Oh no, poor kid... He was so determined to do well." Keidima looked at the boy, who seemed to be looking at the ground, close to tears. She wanted to scoop him up in a hug but decided against it.
"And I was lying, no one's going home. That was a rational deception to ensure you gave it your all in the tests."
The whole class gasped, and if Keidima weren't also shocked into disbelief, she would have laughed at their silly expressions.
"That's it. We're done for the day. Pick up a syllabus in the classroom. Read it over before tomorrow morning." Mr. Aizawa walked to Izuku and handed him a slip, saying something to him in a low tone.
Keidima jogged forward and tapped Mr. Aizawa on the shoulder as he walked off. "Sir?"
"Hm? What is it?"
"I'm sorry for using my quirk earlier. It wasn't polite of me to do. I should have trusted you."
"Don't worry about it. I told Mr. Bakugo that he had pinched a nerve struggling against my capturing weapon and passed out. He doesn't expect that you did anything."
"Oh, thank goodness. I was worried I would get my head blown off," Keidima chuckled nervously.
"No, you'll be fine. Just be sure not to use it if you can afford to. It has a pretty big drawback."
"Yeah, I know. Thank you, sir." Keidima looked at the ground, rubbing her arm.
"Oh, and I saw you had asked for a capturing weapon on your hero form. I could teach you how to use it."
Keidima gasped softly as she looked up. "Yes, that'd be amazing!"
Mr. Aizawa grunted, nodded, and walked off.
The young girl turned, seeing Izuku coming toward her. "H-hey, Keidima, right?"
"Mhm! That's me!" she giggled, making Izuku blush. "Oh, he's gonna be so much fun."
The boy rubbed the back of his neck. "I-I just wanted to thank you for, y'know, saving me earlier!"
"Huh? Oh, I didn't save you. Mr. Aizawa did. I just helped." Keidima smiled softly. "But I'm glad I could help."
Izuku blushed deeper at her smile and nodded.
"By the way, I'm relieved you're not being expelled! I was rooting for you the whole time! I'm a sucker for underdogs," she giggled again, making it a personal competition to see how deep the boy's blush could go.
"T-Thank you! Anyways, I gotta go to the nurse now. Bye!" he said quickly, avoiding her eyes as he walked past.
"Izuku!" she called after him, and he turned momentarily. "You're not getting enough sleep!" He chuckled and turned again, walking off.
-
Keidima went with the rest of the class back to the classroom to change and collect their syllabus. She sighed as she changed out of her gym uniform, hoping that her hero costume, at least, would be the correct size.
She grabbed a syllabus and stuck it in her bag, then began walking out the door if it weren't for a tap on the shoulder. Tenya pulled her aside and bowed stiffly. "I wanted to apologize for my behavior this morning. You have more than proved your worth and did not deserve to be treated so harshly."
"I- thank you, Tenya." Keidima smiled at the kind gesture and gently lifted him out of his bow. "It means a lot."
"Of course. Hopefully, we can be on a good footing from here on out."
"I hope so, too! I'll see you, Tenya!"
-
Walking out the main doors and down the steps, Keidima grinned as she approached a familiar duo. Mina and Eijiro turned and waved at her as she approached. "We live in about the same part of town. Why don't we walk home together?"
"I don't see why not!"
"Wait!" She turned and saw Denki running up to them. "Don't forget me!"
"We couldn't forget you, bro! C'mon, let's get home."
The four walked home, proud that they had finished their first day with relatively no problems, although Mina had to keep Keidima awake the whole way home. Still, Keidima was glad to have reconnected with old friends and even made some new ones.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And there you have it! Chapter 2, done! Lemme know what you think!
Also wowie I wrote so much more for these 1.5 episodes than the first four. Maybe that's because most of the first episodes were focusing on Izuku. No clue. Anyways, there's no way in hell I'll be able to keep this pace up, especially with me going back to school soon, so expect much spottier uploads.
Lemme read Chapter 1! Lemme read Chapter 3! Lemme start at the beginning!

How Tom Hanks’ Tragic Childhood Changed Him – Forever
Rhea KumarOctober 18, 2022
Tom Hanks is one of the world’s most successful leading actors and has led a prolific career in Hollywood as a screenwriter, producer and director. He is one of the few actors to win back-to-back Oscars for acting, one for his role in 1993’s Philadelphia, and in 1994 for his role in Forrest Gump. Yet, his career has no end in sight.
RELATED: Tom Hanks: Cultivate Your Faith, Not Your Fear
This summer he lit up the screen in Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis biopic as Colonel Tom Parker, and in Disney’s live-action Pinocchioremake as Gepetto.
But, his path to stardom is anything but conventional, and Tom had to learn early on in life that optimism is the greatest tool to have in dark times.
Tom Hanks Is Hollywood’s Nice Guy
Hanks is consistently crowned as one of Hollywood’s nice guys, because of his down-to-earth and genial personality. We can all remember back in 2015 when Tom Hanks found a Fordham student’s ID in Central Park and sent out a mass tweet to find its owner. Talk about the definition of a good Samaritan.
RELATED: How to Break the Cycle of a Traumatic Childhood and Save Your Family
Then there was the time Hanks was filming Angels and Demons in Italy and witnessed a wedding procession. The bride was having difficulty getting through the crowd because the movie was being shot near the wedding chapel, so, ever the hero, Hanks stopped filming and decided to escort the bride so she could get married. Now that’s a superhero move.
Despite his great personality and overall happy-go-lucky demeanour, Tom’s life was anything but perfect, and the actor has been candid about the trials and tribulations he faced during his childhood.
A Nomadic Childhood
This video cannot be played because of a technical error.(Error Code: 102006)
Hanks’ good spirit is most likely a result of his childhood, where he had to make the most of his unfortunate situation. Hanks was born the third out of four children and his parents divorced in 1961 when he was just five years old. His baby brother lived with his mom, but Hanks and the rest of his siblings lived with his dad. Hanks says that his dad moved so often that by the time he was 10, he had lived in 10 different homes.
In 2017, Hanks released a book of short stories called Uncommon and in the collection, he detailed the less than ideal conditions that he and his siblings endured.

His father Amos worked late nights as a cook and wouldn’t return home until 11pm. Meanwhile, Hanks and his siblings would dwell in their dirty apartment. “If you scraped the amount of burnt tomato soup off the stove, it would have been like an archeological dig!” he recalls.
The Hollywood star says that despite his siblings saying that their childhood wasn’t that fun and that they were miserable, “In some ways it was very cool, because we laughed a lot.”
Loneliness and Falling Through the Cracks
Tom Hanks in 1994’s Forrest Gump
But despite the fun and nomadic life that he lived, Hanks harbored feelings of loneliness and abandonment. In an interview with Graham Bensinger, he detailed his loneliness, saying, “Maybe there was a degree of loneliness because really no one — I kind of like fell through the cracks and didn’t really have adults per se that were taking care of me.”
RELATED: Denzel Washington’s Broken Childhood Taught Him Not To Make The Same Mistakes Again
The Splash actor often asked himself, ‘How do I find the vocabulary for what’s rattling around in my head?’, and when asked by BBC Radio 4’s Kirby Young what those feeling rattling in his head were, Hanks replied, “It was the vocabulary of loneliness.”
How Tom Hanks Developed Lifetime Optimism
Tom Hanks doesn’t think that he inherited his optimistic and cheerful worldview from his parents. Instead, he says that he had to develop those skills on his own. In an interview in 2017, he said, “The few times I’ve been afraid of a new environment, I got over it. And once you learn that it might be bad for a while, then you’re OK.”
He also says that for one to be an optimist doesn’t mean that they’re naive, or that they aren’t aware of the harsh realities of the world- after all, he’s experienced his fair share of that. He says, “That’s just not the case. I weigh everything. But I can’t help it that I wake up in the morning and think: what good thing is going to come around?
RELATED: How To Rebuild Your Self-Esteem If You’re Dealing With Childhood Trauma
And with this optimism, Hanks transformed his life. By the time he reached high school, he realized that acting could be a serious career path and performing allowed him to get out of the house. “I had more fun than I could possibly imagine,” he said in an interview.
Because of his loneliness experience in childhood, Tom Hanks was determined to start a family as soon as he could. At the age of 21, he and ex-wife Samantha Lewes wed, and soon enough he had a son and daughter. While times were tough as the young actor tried to make it in the business while parenting two young children, Hanks says that settling down early was a good thing.
He said, “Having a kid at 21 was the greatest thing that ever happened to me because I didn’t smoke pot…I didn’t go into drugs, I was not a party boy, I didn’t drink too much.”
The Making of a Hollywood Legend
Hanks’ dedication to his career and his family life paid off when he landed what many believe to be his big break in 1984’s mermaid rom-com, Splash. Afterward, producers were practically knocking at his door with comedy roles, and he even landed an Oscar nomination for his role in the 1988 hit Big.
RELATED: How Katy Perry’s Strange Childhood Shaped Her Approach To Motherhood
But in the 1990s, Hanks was tired of playing goofy characters and decided that he wanted to try more dramatic roles. And this career shift, though risky, ended up paying off as the actor is only the second male lead to ever win two consecutive Oscars.
Since then, Tom Hanks has acted in close to 100 movies, and his overall box office gross is around eight billion dollars- it’s safe to say that he made the right career movie.
How Does Tom Hanks Deal With Hard Times?
Tom has admitted to seeking therapy during tough times, like in 1987 when he divorced his first wife, Samantha Lewes. But today, Tom has developed a set of coping techniques like Transcendental Meditation, to create a balanced and healthier life with Rita Wilson, his wife of over 25 years.
RELATED: Dave Bautista: From Violent Childhood to Hollywood Superstar
You could easily take one look at Tom Hanks and say, “this guy must have it so easy.” But, his path to stardom was certainly not easy, and it took a lot of perseverance for Tom Hanks to acquire positivity and optimism despite his bleak childhood.

Selfship Ask Game by @selfshipseaside
(ft Bakugo)
Band-aid 🩹 - If there was one thing about your f/o that you'd want people to understand, what would it be? I’d want people to understand that he’s not a mean person. He has trouble expressing his emotions, so they usually come out on other people as anger. Thoughts 💭 - What do you think your f/o thinks about you when you're not around?
“She’d look hot in that.”
“This would be way less boring if she was here.”
“I’ll buy her something since she couldn’t come.
“I hope she hasn’t gotten herself into trouble..”
“God, I miss her.. loveable idiot…”
Balloon 🎈 - Does your f/o celebrate their birthday? Additionally, does your s/i or yourself celebrate yours? If so, what's the special day looking like? He celebrates his birthday, but he doesn’t make a super big deal out of it. He’d never admit it, but he loves when his friends surprise him with presents or a small party. I do celebrate my birthday. It looks like a party with friends, marbled cake, and roller skating.
Microphone 🎤 - Does your f/o sing or play music? If so, how are they at their craft, and what's your favorite thing about it? He can sing and play the drums, although he barely shows anybody. He played the drums at the school festival, which made him more confident in his skills. If I ask really nicely, he’ll sing to me. Despite his regular voice being scratchy, his singing voice is surprisingly smooth. I love watching him get into playing the drums.
Phone 📞 - If you and your f/o have cellphones of any kind, what's their contact name in your phone, and what's theirs for you?
My contact for him: 💥❤️My Blasty❤️💥
His contact for me: Angel Wings🤍
Dance 💃 - Can you or your f/o dance?
He’s never really had a big interest in dancing. I know a few basic dances, but nothing really romantic or cute.
Romance 🌹 - What's the most romantic thing your f/o has done? Furthermore, what's the most romantic thing you have done for your f/o?
It’s hard to choose. He’s done quite a few romantic things. For Valentine’s Day, he knew that I had had a sucky day at school. When I got back to my dorm, he had set up a little dinner he had cooked himself, and he also had bought me a box of chocolates. After we ate, we went to my bed, which he left a teddy bear on. He cuddled me for the rest of the night.
I’ve also done a lot of romantic things for him, but I think the most romantic thing I did was on a day he had also had a bad day. He had actually been on a mission at his internship, and came back with bruises and sore muscles. I made a bath for him with candles and bubbles. He seemed to really like it. I gave him a massage afterwards.
Crystal Ball 🔮 - Is your f/o superstitious? Do they believe in the paranormal? If so, what kind of stuff do they believe in/fear?
He doesn’t believe in the paranormal, though there have been a few times where he’s questioned the existence of ghosts. It’s very rare for him to be afraid of things like that.
Bed 🛏️ - Where does your f/o like to sleep? Are they conventional with a good schedule, or do they find damp corners to call their bed?
He prefers sleeping in a bed, but could manage on a couch or sleeping bag. He’s not able to fall asleep during class when everybody is talking. He tries to get to sleep pretty early on school days, as he thinks it’s important for his health and becoming #1 hero.
Sick 🤒 - Your f/o is sick in bed, what do you do? I ask him if he needs anything, though it’s hard to tell if he actually does or doesn’t because he hides his feelings. I usually make him some kind of soup, bring him a washcloth for his forehead and check his temperature. If he feels alone, I don’t mind laying in bed with him, as long as it’s not the stomach bug.
Song 🎵 - What's a song your f/o knows by heart, and a song you know by heart?
Him: The Drug In Me Is You -Falling In Reverse
Me: Pity Party -Melanie Martinez
Feather 🪶 - If you and your f/o were animals, which animals would you be and why? He would probably be a tiger or hyena, because he’s strong and mostly aggressive. I would probably be a snow leopard or a falcon of some sort. I’d really like to fly.
Smile ☺️ - What about your f/o makes you smile every single time? Furthermore, what's something you do that makes your f/o smile every time?
Every time Bakugo hugs me from behind or smiles at me, I smile. Something that makes him smile every time is when I tell him I love him.

unexpected (villain x sidekick)
inspired by this incredible prompt from @ive-got-whumperflies
“Target has been captured and is en route.”
Villain couldn’t help the smile that crept into their cheeks. Finally, finally, they’d be another step closer to taking down Hero. Get to their beloved Sidekick, rough them up a bit, and get all the intel they needed. They might even be able to lure Hero to their headquarters for a futile rescue attempt - oh, it was just too much to hope for.
“Target has arrived,” the muffled voice said over the comms system.
“Bring them up. I want to say a few words before sending them down.” Over the years, Villain had realized that there was nothing quite as wonderful as holding all the cards and seeing someone's face when they realized it.
The door buzzed, and a body was roughly shoved through the door and fell to the ground. Villain stood from their desk and came to where Sidekick lay on the ground. They had their speech all planned out: a hint at the torture that awaited them, a couple threatening jabs designed to really break their spirit, and then a last chance to turn on Hero and divulge their plans before–
But Villain's plans were shattered when Sidekick shot up from their prone position on the floor, wrapped their arms tightly around Villain's legs, and began weeping inconsolably. Villain could barely make out the words, but when they did, their jaw dropped.
thank you, thank you, oh god thank you –
This blubbering went on for a minute or so, and Villain marinated in the sheer awkwardness of...whatever this was, which was most certainly not what they'd planned for.
"Alright. Sidekick. Calm down." Villain patted their head stiffly and pried Sidekick's grateful arms off of their legs, now sore from how tightly Sidekick was clinging to them. They deposited their captive on a nearby chair, and there, Villain could size up who they were up against and what they could inflict.
But from the looks of things, Villain had - quite literally - been beaten to the punch.
Sidekick's face sported a black eye, a split lip, and several nasty-looking scrapes and gashes. Their usually spotless outfit was torn and dirty, and Villain could see bruises on their exposed skin. Sidekick clutched their left wrist to their chest and shook uncontrollably - whether from fear or the over-air conditioned room, Villain couldn’t tell.
"Did my associates do this to you?” Probably from the struggle of the capture - they made a mental note to berate their lackeys for disobeying them yet again. “I told them not to touch you before you had a chance to turn–"
Sidekick shook their head earnestly. Well. Not Henchman, then.
And there was more to this scene that unsettled Villain. The uniform hung loosely on Sidekick's thin frame, and Villain could see the hollowness in their drawn, pale face. And there was something about their demeanor – cowering in a chair, not quite meeting Villain's eyes, that was so different from the defiant fireball they'd met in their previous clashes with Hero. Villain frowned. Something wasn’t right.
"Then who did this to you?" Sidekick seemed frozen. They opened their mouth, but no words came out. "Is there another Villain I need to watch out for?"
Sidekick nodded - yes. Their eyes filled with fear, and Villain felt something in their heart clench. They were no saint, but they'd never seen someone so afraid. The truth was, they really only loved to torment the defiant ones, the arrogant ones who refused to admit that they could break like anyone else. But this one – this one was already broken. And there was just no joy to be found in that.
Villain knelt before Sidekick, whose tears began slipping from their eyes in earnest.
"Sidekick. Who did this?"
Sidekick released a shuddering sigh. "Hero," they whispered. voice cracking.
Villain's head spun. No....it couldn’t be.
Couldn't it?
Hero. The one who'd mocked them endlessly when they were children, making fun of their clothes, their hair, their unconventional ideas.
Hero. The one who cheated them out of the coveted top spot at the local training school all those years ago .
Hero. The bright, shining example that the city worshipped while Villain slunk in the shadows and did their business in a less...conventional manner.
Hero. The one that everyone trusted, loved, revered, when only Villain knew the truth.
“Hero did this to you?”
Sidekick nodded, and the tears came freely. They told their tale - how they’d accidentally come across some of Hero's shady dealings and thought it was a mistake. But when they’d confronted Hero, Hero had turned on them - told Sidekick they were being irrational, unfair, judgmental, that they didn’t understand what it took to have the weight of the city on their shoulders, all but confirming that it wasn’t a mistake at all. Sidekick had been heartbroken, and set out to redeem the mentor they idolized.
For months, they'd tried to help hide what Hero was doing. Siphoning money from dark places, putting their friends in power and defaming good, honest people who stood in their way. Hiding behind a perfect smile while manipulating everyone around them into perfect submission. Sidekick fought every day to try and redeem the good person they though they knew, but it was no use - that person didn't exist.
But the worst came when Sidekick tried to leave - and Hero wouldn't let them. Villain swallowed hard as Sidekick described what happened - nights, starving, alone, and locked in a cold cell. Dangerous missions where Hero forced Sidekick into danger, only to rescue them at the last possible moment. “Trainings” that lasted for hours and left them bloody and bruised. All from the person Sidekick had looked up to. And if they said a word, it was Sidekick's family who would pay the price.
Until Villain came, swooped in, and stole them from a situation that they couldn’t see any other way out of.
“So...now I’m here.” Sidekick met Villain’s eyes warily, cheeks slightly reddening with embarrassment. “And I guess...you’re gonna hurt me too. But I never would have gotten out of there without you. And at least now, my family's safe. So...thank you.”
Villain had never felt this before - the quiet gratitude of someone who’s life they’d accidentally made better. The ache of sympathy for the thin, shaky waif in front of him, who had nowhere else to turn. No, this was very new. And terrifying. And it felt...good.
"No."
Sidekick’s eyes clouded with confusion at Villain's sudden outburst. “What...what do you mean?”
“I’m not gonna hurt you.” Villain met Sidekick’s eyes, feeling like a fire was being stoked in their gut. "I'm gonna take Hero down. Once and for all. Will you help me?"
Sidekick met their eyes and nodded, a new understanding filling them with a light Villain never thought would return.
Villain buzzed their comms system, and Henchman answered with a grunt. “You want me to come in and get started?”
Villain cleared their throat. “There’s been a change in plans. I have some...new intel. Bring up some soup, a couple blankets, and a first aid kit. Sidekick and I have a few things to talk about.”

doctor is in the house (1011 spoilers)
Okay, so y’all know I’m in it for one thing and one thing only
Tumblr media
And that’s Law.
And then it’s ZoLaw, platonic or romantic, I don’t care.
And then it’s Law caring about Kid and the others, or basically trusting in them, like, y’know figuring out the next line of attack, defence or retreat when Zoro’s almost killed himself in order to save Luffy.
Zoro’s words last chapter (or the one before?) were that if he failed it was up to Law. Or he used ‘you’ (in the translations, anyway), but seemed to be talking to Law.
Law allowed Big Mom to be saved by Prometheus because gaining victory over her was not worth the loss of Zoro’s or any of the allies’ lives.
Tumblr media
Slopping in the official panel for this, cos it’s slightly different and clearer:
Tumblr media
Cos I like to view Law as his own person, though he does get put upon for sure, I like that he decides to take everyone down to the castle. That it’s not some kind of casual order from Luffy, even though Luffy did basically say he had control of the situation last chapter, so everyone else could piss off (but he was much politer).
I dunno how Law figures Big Mom’s in the castle? I guess it’s because Kid’s contraption fell apart, therefore Big Mom is alive and that’s where she’d head.
Tactical rather than compassionate in this instance, I like that he teleports Zeus as well (Nami will be happy, cos I think that Big Mom and Prometheus have turned agains Zeus).
And did he teleport Kid and Killer too? Or was it the effect of the blast from Big Mom, as they stated? (No, cos’ the room doesn’t extend that far).
Look at Kaidou’s claws! Great framing. And it is Kaidou, right? Law there putting the pop! in snap and crackle, although the hiragana reads pa pa pa, but same meaning I’m sure!
And so while Law tends to Zoro with doctorly ministrations, somewhere in the keep (I guess his powers are probably best to heal Zoro, over Chopper’s general ,more conventional, skill, awesome as it is) the scene shifts to these too good ole boys:
Tumblr media
Second floor of the keep. And in the manga cap below, just look at how delicate and spindly Kid’s legs are. I know it’s just a quick sketch and probably a lot better in the official release, but...
Tumblr media
Okay. Next! Our o-shiruko, red bean paste soup, heroine, O-Tama. And it’s all about the o-shiruko. Always will be, always has been. Oh wait. I got ahead of myself. There’s scorpion Hawkins! Man he looks amazing.
Tumblr media
JJK Nobara and he obviously share a few techniques in common, but that’s not surprising anda topic for another time. I love Hawkins’ design and fruit! Kid goes on to find Big Mom, and Killer’s left to face down the Voodoo Hoodoo.
Meanwhile, two of my other favourite heroes (yes I have multiple, just like ships), Usopp and Nami, are riding on the back of O-Tama’s lion-dog, Komachiyo, and bravely facing down Page One in their own way. Love them.
Tumblr media
Page One ain’t giving up, despite Usopp’s stellar efforts, but guess who steps in to the fray?
Tumblr media
Big Mom’s after our favourite redhead (who isn’t Nami or Shanks). Things are looking really bad (Prometheus is looking pretty happy. Or is it Hera now?). Anyhoo...
Tumblr media
Big Mom and O-Tama are besties!!!, going back to that modest banquet (of o-shiruko) that was all that the very starved town of Obokore could afford to give her, and it could hardly afford that.
Though the official release shows that her gratitude is certainly tempered (see below)!
Tumblr media
But remember that Luffy delivered a heap of food to them (is it the same food? Or maybe the food that some of the samurai stole to get Ashura Doji on side?), and so Kaidou’s minions burnt the town to a crisp, saying they stole it? (where’s O-Tsuru?) And also because they were loyal to the nine red scabbards.
Tumblr media
Love the way that Oda has Tama’s font wavering like the lines of heat extending from fire. The official gives more information and a slightly different story, but the end result is the same (see below).
Tumblr media
Big Mom is a bit upset because:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And that standard is to not mess with Big Mom’s o-shiruko.
Or anyone’s o-shiruko for that matter. Queen the Plague will tell you and so will Zoro. (Once Law fixes him up)

RWBY Recaps - Volume 8 “War”
Tumblr media
Hello, everyone! Story time.
Yesterday food was delivered for my two idiot dogs (they’re thrilled about it) but, because it was delivered by Fed Ex, shenanigans were bound to ensue. These particular shenanigans involved realizing that the food had not been left at the front door like tracking said it had. Instead, it was down the very long driveway by the mailbox. Specifically, it was on a low wall beside the mailbox, currently inaccessible due to a mound of plowed snow.
Now, how the delivery guy managed to get it there I’ll never know, but given that our postal system is currently killing itself to get us our Amazon orders for Christmas, I shrugged, let it go, and resigned myself to lifting an 18 pound bag plus box over that snow without dying. Which meant that in reality I just dragged it, uncaring what bumps the bag might accumulate along the way. What are the dogs gonna do? Complain about presentation?
Snow successfully circumvented; I was home free!
… until I was lifting the box into the car, hit a patch of black ice, and was suddenly looking up at the sky, my right hip and leg screaming.
I’m fine. Bruised, but fine. It’s 2020. Did I expect to not fall? C’mon, Clyde. Be sensible.
The reason I'm telling you all this is because falling on ice at 10:00pm with an oversized bag of dog food was less painful than watching this episode.
I jest... but only a little. To be fair to RWBY, it admittedly wasn't painful in any new way. Everything that's a problem this week has been a problem for years now: confusing motivations, changing semblances, unpersuasive character beats, etc. So in some ways this episode — especially as a hiatus episode — is rather underwhelming. I expected RWBY to do something big before taking six weeks off, but this episode simply set the (unstable) stage for what's to come. With the exception of Ren, nothing changed this episode, which makes for a rather "Okay..." note to end on. It's not inherently bad, it's just a bit of a letdown after hyping ourselves up over the expectation that something even crazier than grimm soup will happen. Which, to again be fair, is on us as opposed to the writers. But that feeling of, "If this was last week, what in the world will we get right before an unpredicted hiatus?" was palpable. Turns out the answer was, "A pretty tame episode."
Tumblr media
As always though, let's start at the beginning. This episode is titled "War" — straight to the point — and it's actually a little shorter than our last three episodes, adding to that "Okay..." feeling overall. We open on the outskirts of Atlas, amidst what appears to be a wheat field, or something similar. Upon reflection, it makes sense that the bubbled city would be able to grow things not normally growable in the tundra. This might also explain Cinder's strange beginning. Perhaps her orphanage existed on these rural outskirts and then she was brought into the city proper? We'll probably never know for sure, but at least this is a simpler answer than, "The Madame went off to an entirely different Kingdom to secure her child slave." Occam's Razor and all that.
Tumblr media
Ironwood's army has assembled to hold off Salem's army. Wow, aren't we glad Ironwood invested in thousands of trained professionals rather than a handful of independent fighters? Seriously though, this is now a battle of numbers. May says later in the episode that Ironwood's forces are doing their best to assist Atlas, so they should go help Mantle... but that help only exists because years ago he recognized that the tiny class sizes of the Academies, this
Tumblr media
wasn't going to be enough if grimm attacks suddenly increased. Sure enough, now they're in a situation where Ironwood needs even more men to keep up with Salem's creation magic. The fact that he has any at all is crucial to what little hope is left. How do Jaune, Yang, and Ren think they're going to get the time to look for Oscar without everyone dying while they're gone? Because Ironwood's army is keeping the attack at bay. I love how the story keeps angling for the "Military people are evil" message while actively showing us how much a military is needed in this world. If Ironwood had been a generic Good Guy who dismantled his armed forces because others wanted to ignore that they've always been at war against objectively evil creatures — both the grimm and Salem — then there would have been nothing to hold Salem off until small team rescue/bomb plans could be implemented.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But I'm getting ahead of myself. As usual. The army is on the front lines and one guy is scared enough that he's shaking. Can't say I blame him. As always, RWBY functions best when it leans towards horror, with skeletons rising alongside the normal grimm and intense music playing to convey the stakes. Ironwood watches the onslaught and immediately calls for a civilian evacuation into the subway system. Get people below ground, behind a few, defendable entrances, rather than wandering about the city where land or sky grimm can pick them off easy-peasy. Makes sense. Yet I'm already seeing fans make snide comments about how Ironwood is "still running," which just demonstrates how many viewers take the emotions of the show at face value — who is Good and who is Bad — rather than considering the situation and deciding for themselves. What's far more egregious than viewers enjoying a story however they'd like on a Saturday before the holiday though (seriously, my salt aside, no one has to enjoy RWBY any one way) is that RT again tries to paint Ironwood as crazy when he's... just not? Beyond the choice to animate him with scary expressions
Tumblr media
once he gives the order the soldier starts to say, "But sir — " and Ironwood yells for him to obey right now. The scene makes it look like Ironwood is doing something shady again. Here's this goon balking at the order, but we're not told why. What's bad about getting the people to (relative) safety? Why is this order treated like something to question at all? We're not told and, from what we do know, it's not something that would be questioned, so unless we learn something new post-hiatus, that line exists only to make Ironwood look bad. It's a (nonsensical) excuse to have another ally turning against him (slightly) and to give Ironwood the chance to look scary and violent again. Nevermind that his city is under attack and if a subordinate started questioning a completely sensible and time-sensitive order? I might yell too.
Tumblr media
So we're off to a great start. The above looks particularly stupid given that we immediately see the flying grimm arriving in a populated area, terrifying all the civilians there. Everyone bolts for the subway and we cut away from a man trying desperately to reach his daughter, unsure if either of them survive. But people want Ironwood to not use what few resources he has? See, this is why generic messages like, "You have to stand your ground" don't work. Sometimes there are situations where you should run and that doesn't automatically equal being a coward. It means you're smart enough to take the actions necessary to save as many lives as possible.
Later on we'll have a similar issue with the message, "You have to trust people" when my darling Oscar briefly loses his mind.
Tumblr media
Now though, we see that the "fugitives" Yang, Jaune, and Ren have been taken into custody. Of course they have. Look, when the preview dropped yesterday I saw a number of takes along the lines of, "How dare the Ace Ops do this. They need to put aside their differences until the attack is over!" but no, they really don't, because it's no longer their responsibility to extend trust towards this group. Especially when doing so, to their mind, has a high chance of making a horrific situation that much worse. What are they going to do if, in the middle of a Salem attack, the kids they decided to trust betray them, attack them, and leave them knocked out somewhere while the world burns?
...Oh wait, they already did that.
See, the group broke trust first. Numerous times. The Ace Ops listened to Yang admit that she and Blake had betrayed Ironwood days ago. Then they watched Ruby betray him again by alerting the rest of the team, turning them against him. They swore they wouldn't attack, so Team RWBY attacked them first. They learn that Qrow had a hand in murdering their leader. They encounter the group again and Weiss gleefully asks if they want a second defeat. They watch Ruby tell the entire world to dismiss Ironwood because he’s the one who can’t be trusted. Outside of JYR not immediately attacking them when they arrived to help (something I praised them for), this group has never put their trust in the Ace Ops. So why do they — and we — expect the Ace Ops to do so now? Imagine for just a moment that it was reversed. We find out that someone betrayed the group for no good reason, set themselves against them, continued to do so as everything fell apart, told the rest of the world they’re the enemy, and then a close associate is involved in Ruby's murder. How many people would expect the group to just shrug all that off? Would they put their differences aside and embrace these people because blind trust is (supposedly) the right thing to do? Of course not! Yang would punch their lights out and everyone would cheer, but that's because they're the established heroes. Outside of that role, no one else is allowed to mistrust those who have proven themselves untrustworthy and take precautions against getting betrayed again. To say nothing of how these characters don’t have our meta perspective. Meaning, they live in a world where this trio is not a part of a protagonist group destined to remain a part of the plot because that’s how story conventions work. They’re three random teens who were promoted to huntsmen early. They’re three soldiers out of many who can, at any time, be taken out of the fight. No one on the Ace Ops is working under the belief that they “have” to be a part of this fight. From their in-world perspective, you could toss them in jail for the rest of the battle and that’s that. Outside of their fugitive status they are entirely unimportant.
So yes, Jaune, Ren, and Yang are in handcuffs. They deserve to be. Don't worry though, they get out very soon.
Yang makes a snide comment about Winter "Still just following orders" and honestly? I've lost the love I used to have for her as a character. Yang is just an exercise in frustration whenever she speaks now. Thus far she's blamed Ruby for everything that's gone wrong (ignoring her own choices there), did a 180 to yell at Ren for acknowledging how bad things are, worried nonsensically about Blake being disappointed in her even though Ruby is the one she fought with, and is now back to the "You just follow orders" shtick. Yang will label anything she personally doesn't like as evil order following, but conveniently ignores how following Ruby's orders helped get them into this mess, and how the one time she went AWOL made things even worse. These characters don't actually have  beliefs they stand behind, they just say whatever is currently necessary to make themselves look good, even if that contradicts previous statements or actions.
Tumblr media
She also gets mad at Vine for saying that grimm don't take prisoners, ignoring that she only found this out a few hours ago. No one in the group is equipped to navigate the emotional minefield that is this war because they can't even take two seconds to put themselves in another’s shoes. Weiss doesn't bother to consider Whitley's situation. Jaune points at the snow and gets frustrated that Harriet doesn't magically know there's grimm soup flowing nearby. Yang snaps at Vine for stating what she also knew to be a basic fact about grimm up until Oscar's kidnapping. It's all framed as, "How can you be this stupid?" rather than, "Oh yeah, these people haven't had the experiences I have. If I was randomly told this I'd doubt it too. I should try to explain this in a way that will make sense to them and increase my chances of being believed."
This is the group who decided it was a good idea to tell the whole world about Salem and did it just as badly as I suspected they would. The story has shoved a delicate, information-based war into the hands of punch-happy teenagers and refuses to grapple with how that's a bad thing.
Tumblr media
Anyway, Ironwood comes on the radio to say that the whale is pretty indestructible on the outside, but it might be vulnerable from the inside, so let's get a bomb in there. Seems like a good enough plan as any, especially given that the grimm is currently on the very outskirts of the city, away from the civilians if/when it's blown up. What kind of bomb might this be though?
Could it, perhaps, end up being a now severely damaged android who is based off of Pinocchio?
Tumblr media
Time will tell. For now, the group is quite obviously upset that Ironwood is planning a big BOOM while Oscar (and Ozpin! Tellingly, no one mentions Ozpin...) is still inside. Here's the thing: Both sides are right here. YJR are right to be worried about their friend, while the Ace Ops — who have no emotional ties to Oscar and, as just established, are questioning whether or not a grimm really kidnapped him — are right that they cannot prioritize a single life over the entirety of Atlas. They just can't! And any hero worth their salt is going to recognize this. You cannot knowingly sacrifice thousands of people (if not more) for one (admittedly awesome) farm boy. It would be a different situation if the people of Atlas volunteered to remain in danger to give Oscar a chance at escape, but that obviously isn't the situation here. If someone told me, "Sorry, Clyde, we can't get you out because the place you're in is super dangerous and attempting to extract you would likely cause the rescue party to die. Also, the longer we don't blow this location up the longer lots of other people die" I'd be like, "Fair enough. Have a nice life!" I mean, obviously anyone would be terrified and devastated by the news, but if you're still thinking straight and have even an ounce of compassion for others, you don't trade all those lives for your own. Spock does not open the door to flood the whole Enterprise with radiation!
Tumblr media
And notably, neither does Kirk. Oscar isn't given the chance to sacrifice himself — ignoring his choice to try and undermine Salem's forces rather than escaping — so Jaune, Ren, and Yang are deciding that for him. Which, again, makes sense for them emotionally, but it's still a selfish choice. They're prioritizing their family over everyone else's. If someone ever told me they’d risked a whole city for my sake I’d be touched, but also pissed as hell. Because what were you thinking?
Which is really my biggest issue with this divide. It would have been nice if the show had done more to make me believe these three are that ride and die for Oscar. Don't get me wrong, I'm thrilled that they are and I'll take this characterization over the apathy we had in the past, but let's be real, it kind of came out of nowhere. The group as a whole pretty much ignored Oscar up until the movie invite and two of these characters — Yang and Jaune — have actively hurt him in the name of getting at Ozpin. Now suddenly they're willing to toss aside their huntsmen duties — protect the people — in order to save him? Nice sentiment, it's just that, as always, we have very little development for it, especially given the level of emotion shown. Particularly when it comes to Ren. The prospect of someone sacrificing Nora? I 100% believe that he draws a hard line and this kick-starts a change in his semblance. Ren is shown to be thinking about how he lost his teammate Pyrrha? Totally believe it! Someone is sacrificing the kid I'm not sure he's ever had a conversation with? That's less persuasive. At the very least, it would have been nice to have the trio grapple with whether they can or should prioritize Oscar over everyone else, rather than taking such a black and white stance of, "Of course taking the time to save this one guy while everyone else dies is worth it. You're evil for thinking otherwise."
We even get a shot of Winter's hand shaking and clenching like Yang's used to, just to hammer home who the correct party is.
Tumblr media
While they begin this argument we cut to Salem who is literally conducting her grimm in their attack against Atlas.
Tumblr media
Very nice. I love when a villain has
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Emerald watches her, clearly freaked out, and then sneaks off to where Oscar is held. In the hallway she encounters one of the jellyfish grimm, so she casually makes it not see her until it has passed.
Her semblance works on grimm, but not “real girl” androids? Okay.
We all realize how crazy powerful Emerald is though, right? The stuff that she could do in a fight is staggering and I'll be forever salty that all she managed in the Penny battle was to create a couple different Cinders. Emerald, Marrow, Salem herself... RWBY has a real problem of having the antagonists conveniently not use the power at their disposal when the heroes need to win.
Tumblr media
So Emerald starts listening in on Ozpin's torture. We learn that Hazel was recruited when he tried to kill Salem numerous times and had to watch her keep reforming. Which, if I remember correctly, is a technique she used back when she and Ozma were playing at Gods. It worked and now Hazel believes that they "share a vision. She's going to create a new world order," one without Kingdoms or Huntsmen Academies. No, says Ozpin, she's going to divide humanity past reform, summon the Gods, and hopefully die when they take out all of Remnant.
...My god, did we finally get Salem's motivations after seven years?
Tumblr media
Seriously though: seven years. It's way too late, especially when we now have so many questions attached to this supposed goal. If Salem always wanted to divide the world irrevocably, why didn't she attack, oh, say, a thousand years ago? Why has she kept to the sidelines until now? None of this answers why she held off until our simple soul was conveniently ready to fight her. We also have the issue of Salem's knowledge, or lack thereof. So she obviously knows about the Relics and that they'll summon the Gods, but not how to work them? How did that come about? Even Ozpin's motivations are murky now. He repeats Salem's curse word-for-word — though notably, minus the "You must learn the importance of life and death. Only then may you rest" part — yet unless Salem told him this herself when they first reunited — and we know they both hid things from the other — Ozpin could have only gotten this line from the lore episode, something he witnessed along with us just a few weeks/months back. So is he only now realizing that this is what Salem wants the Relics for? Might he be wrong? Or did he somehow figure this out lifetimes ago and we're just not told how? If this is the case, why haven’t Salem’s motivations come up before now?
Tumblr media
This sudden, "Oh yeah, she's always wanted to die" feels pretty tacked on. Like RT had Salem arrive last Volume because that's ~cool~ and then suddenly realized that they have to deal with her motivations now, so they hastily cobbled this together. But, as said at the start, this is entirely expected for RWBY nowadays. A problem to be sure, though one we've been putting up with for a couple of years now.
During all this, Hazel shouts that this is what Ozpin deserves and the first word out of his mouth is, "Yes."
Tumblr media
But Oscar and the rest of Remnant don't deserve it, so make the right choice for them. How did RT think they were going to make this guy an antagonist? Ozpin has so much self-hatred and yet is still trying SO HARD that he makes Ruby Drinking Tea While The World Burns Rose look laughable.
Oh yeah, we'll be getting to that scene in just a second, but for now I just want us all to appreciate Ozpin as a character, even if the story won't.
....
.......
..............
...Okay, moment done lol. Sorry, Oz, there's a lot to cover this episode.
Tumblr media
We cut to a semi-conscious Nora who asks Weiss, "Now what am I good for?" So that’s a double serving of oof. That's when Ruby arrives with fine china steaming with tea. Or coffee. Or hot chocolate. Whatever it is these girls are drinking. What comes next is accompanied by a strange kind of vindication for me. I mean, the fandom dragged me so hard for taking issue with their snuggly smiles during Ruby's message, yet now we literally have the girls sitting back in a mansion as everything goes to shit around them. I know the knee jerk reaction to this will be, "They have to watch over Nora" and “They deserve a break” but really? All three of them need to watch her? And a break during the height of the action? Blake says she hopes everyone else is okay, but who is actually out looking for information about the rest of their team? May. Who's going to do something to get Nora help? Whitley. These characters are so good at telling us they're the heroes while rarely ever displaying those traits. They all (somehow) saw the attack on Atlas and have the ability to get out there and defend people — the job they wanted — yet Ruby looks out the window and asks, "What can we even do?" while taking a long sip of tea. The people of Mantle are (supposedly) freezing to death, yet one of the few with aura, Weiss, sits by a roaring fire going, "Do we just wait for someone to come? If they even come.” I'm sorry, you didn't consider this before you told the whole world about Salem? No one questioned whether asking for potentially non-existent help was worth the risk and what they'd do if it never came? Or even just what they’d do in the meantime? I’m not saying the girls can’t have basic necessities like drinks, or that it can’t be done in style when that’s conveniently available. I’m saying them enjoying the food, warmth, and relative safety of the Schnee household (built on racism) while casually talking about what, if anything, they should do for the people dying outside looks a bit Not Good. "Should we wait for the fire department?" Asks the character as their kitchen burns, sitting beside a number of water buckets that could help slow things down. "If they even come," they sigh, taking another sip of tea. This is ridiculous! The city is currently under attack by the series' Big Bad and half our heroes are just sitting around, watching the evil lightning, wondering if they should try to do anything about it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"How did it all get like this?" Ruby asks her cup, ignoring the many steps she took to make things this bad. It continually boggles my mind that Ironwood is out here trying to keep people safe in the subway, coming up with a plan to blow up this whale, sending out an army to kill countless grimm... yet "What can we even do?" Ruby is supposed to be the hero here. You know, the one who has silver eyes and could one-shot huge numbers of Salem's army if she actually went out there and tried to help.
Ironwood is taking action... and so is May. As said, she's the one out looking for info on their teammates and when she returns says that they should all get back down to Mantle. Why? Because, as mentioned earlier, Atlas at least has an army to help with things. Mantle only has them.
Yet suddenly, Weiss doesn't want to leave.
Tumblr media
Where did this come from? They succeeded in their preferred plan of telling the world what's going on over Ren and Yang's plan of helping what people they could, and now they're looking for something to do. Why wouldn't they head back to help? (Especially now that the shields are down.) Weiss yells that there are people dying in Atlas too but, as established, Atlas has the army. And where was this concern when they refused to let Atlas leave? After a Volume and a half of pro-Mantle content, this seems to come out of nowhere. Worse, Weiss tries to guilt May by asking if she has family in Atlas, which leads to the reveal that she's trans. Her family rejected their daughter.
I want to be clear that I'm very happy RT made this canon. For what she is — a side character we know incredibly little about — I really like May and the fact that they were clear in her identity rather than keeping it to twitter deserves recognition. Yet I'm not going to pretend that the reveal didn't leave a bit of a sour taste in my mouth, simply because we have this incredibly privileged cis girl, who knows a great deal about shitty families, hearing how horrible May's was and still trying to tell her she needs to suck it up and help Atlas over Mantle. When May angrily asks whose side she's on, Blake makes a comment about hearing that before, comparing her to Ironwood. May is painted as the misguided one here, but can you imagine if someone told Weiss to go help Jacques over her found family, Team RWBY, regardless of what he's done to her? The fandom would explode, and rightly so. There's something to be said for realism here, showing us Weiss and Blake's inability to see where May is coming from... but it doesn't feel like a commentary on that. It feels like another Penny situation: May is put in her place for being inconsiderate, even though this time it's her choosing to help people who are ALSO in danger over the people who represent family she's broken with.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I wanted conflict this Volume and I absolutely got it, but damn if it isn’t badly thought out at times.
Because rather than grappling with these personal motivations, Ruby brushes them aside by yelling, "There are no sides! We want to help everyone."
Tumblr media
Does that extend to Ironwood? Ruby's speeches started falling flat when she betrayed Ozpin, attacked Cordovin, betrayed Ironwood, attacked the Ace Ops... This girl does not want to "help everyone." She wants to help those who agree with her.
Yet her rock solid optimism generates the question, “So how exactly do we get out of it?” which, as expected, Ruby has no answer to. The story keeps showing us how bad a leader Ruby has become, yet no one is actively responding to that. They kinda disagree about lying to Ironwood, but still go along with it. Yang kinda criticizes her sister, but that's then lost to general worry as they split (on Ruby's end, anyway). They want to know how she'll lead them next and are seemingly fine when Ruby continually says, "I don't know." At this point I'd be like, "Well... you didn't like May's plan of going back to Mantle, but apparently can't come up with a plan yourself... so I'm going to go with her."
Tumblr media
This is the same conflict we had last Volume: Ruby spoke optimistically about saving everyone, yet was unable to come up with a way to do that. Ironwood had a plan that, while horrific, might save a lot of lives. Yet Ruby is presented as the one to back. Now here she is, hours later, still unable to figure out a way to achieve her perfect outcome. Ruby wanting things to be a certain way is not going to make them so and I’m wondering when someone within the group is going to recognize and act on that.
As Ruby fails to answer this crucial question, we pull back to see Whitley listening in at the door.
Tumblr media
Cutting back to Ozpin and Oscar, Hazel has listened to all this craziness about Gods, immortality, the destruction of Remnant... and literally goes, "Cool story, bro."
Tumblr media
Okay, he says "Nice story" but the emotion is the same. Which I'm really happy about! I mentioned in a recent post that, as far as we know, Hazel hasn't been told anything about the Gods up until now. What Ozpin is telling him sounds like gibberish at worst, incredibly hard to believe craziness at best. Now chuck in Mercury's point that as a tortured prisoner he'll say anything to get free, as well as the fact that this is Ozpin talking to Hazel... and I'm really glad Hazel just ignored his speech (for now at least). It wouldn't make sense otherwise. Granted, this means that the plan literally amounted to, “Let’s info dump a bunch of nonsense-sounding lore on our enemy in the hope that he’ll believe us and betray Salem.” It’s something to try, certainly, and it admittedly is a much better plan than what Oscar is about to cook up.
So since Hazel won't listen to Ozpin, Oscar wants to try instead. Why did you two switch in the first place? It's really obvious that RT is having the characters do weird things in order to stretch out the plot.
Either way, our farm boy is in control again. What new strategy will he try?
"Her name is Jinn."
Tumblr media
This is BEYOND stupid. No, none of this "You have to trust people" nonsense. This is not “people,” this is Hazel. There is a Grand Canyon's width of difference between learning to trust your allies and blindly trusting an active villain who just rejected your "Please defect :(" speech. Even if we remove Hazel from the equation, this is still a monumentally foolish move. I mean, has Oscar considered where he is? This isn't some random warehouse he's been taken to, this is a semi-sentient grimm, a creature creating other creatures out of its ceiling
Tumblr media
and whose doors automatically open when people need them to (Mercury). This is a living being created by and connected to Salem herself. How does Oscar know Salem can't hear everything he says? Or that the whale can't relay information to her? That the grimm in the walls won't pop out and run to their master? Or even that a normal person isn't listening in at the door — like Emerald is. If that had been Tyrian instead, that's it. They're done. Game over.
Someone: "Wow. Salem got the Lamp and managed to ask where the Beacon Relic is. Since the school is still overrun by her army, she snatched it up quick, finished destroying Atlas, and is now on her way to Vacuo. She's nearly completed her plan in days! How did all this happen?
Oscar: I, um... told her what she wanted to know?
Someone: You what?
Oscar: But not Salem! I just told Hazel! ... and then the information somehow got back to her.
Someone: "Somehow?" You deliberately told one of Salem's henchmen this crucial piece of information, in a place where there was a good chance you would be overheard by conventional or magical means, and you're surprised that she "somehow" learned it and used that information to doom us all?
Oscar: ...Yes?
This is so staggeringly stupid it... well, it could only have been done by a kid. So at least that fits lol. Oscar, I love you, but Ozpin should have been screaming in horror the second those words left your mouth. Generations of precautions undone because a kid wants to believe the best of the guy currently pummeling him. Sweet, but stupid. I’m all for optimistic characters, they just can’t risk the whole world on that optimism. Oscar risking himself on the seemingly doomed plan to turn Hazel is one thing, Oscar risking all of Remnant on the seemingly doomed plan to turn Hazel is another thing entirely.
Tumblr media
Even though you know this is precisely how the story will go. Oscar willingly hands over Jinn's name to Salem's forces, but happily none of the THREE who hear about it will tell her. The story's unwillingness to follow through on consequences doesn't change what a bad move this was. I mean, Oscar himself accused Ironwood of playing into Salem's hands by disagreeing with them about how to not die, yet a few hours later he will willingly give Hazel the one piece of information Salem needs to move closer to world-wide destruction? That's uh... well, that's something.
They should have just had the poor boy be tortured, spill the beans to make it stop, and start an arc of self-forgiveness. Oscar can be awesome without coming up with world-dooming plans.
So yeah, Oscar is hoping that Hazel will use the Lamp himself and find out the truth. He wants Hazel to trust him and the man he despises most in the world enough to go against the immortal woman he's terrified of, get the Lamp away from her somehow to use for himself, wasting a once in a generation question to confirm all this, so that Salem will lose a guy with muscle who, to be frank, is absolute insignificant in the grand scheme of her power. Fantastic.
Tumblr media
As said, Emerald overhears all this and immediately runs to Mercury, who is less than convinced by her "Salem wants to destroy the world" talk. Just as he's expressing doubt, Tyrian appears to confirm that this is exactly what she wants to do — and he's loving it.
“Of course she is! You’re surprised? Salem is destruction incarnate!”
Tumblr media
It's a legit point. Are our villains so dense they never considered that Salem might do something to the world they didn't like? It's like the group not thinking about how Salem is still around if Ozpin has been fighting her for a thousand years. RWBY continually gives the impression that these characters don't think about their situation past what they're doing at any given moment.
Tyrian maintains his title as best villain though, simply because I understand what he's doing, why he's doing it, and he's so damn good at it.
Also, can we appreciate Mercury's face here?
Tumblr media
Amazing. This is the kind of humor we should be getting in such a tragedy-laden Volume.
The two of them, Tyrian and Mercury, head off to Vacuo for the Secret Mission, despite Mercury's newfound hesitation. I quite liked these quiet moments between him and Emerald. It has a very "Do what you've gotta do" vibe while showcasing their care for one another, something we haven't seen in a while.
Tumblr media
Back with the airship group. YJR are still horrified that Ironwood would blow up Oscar (even though he has no idea Oscar is there), begging the Ace Ops to give them "a chance to try to rescue him first.” Ren goes pretty hard on the "no one is replaceable" bit, which is frustrating not being what he’s saying is inaccurate (it’s not), but because that's not the issue here. The writing has Harriet start yelling about Marrow replacing her old teammate and Winter replacing Clover, but the question is not whether you'll just forget a teammate and move on with someone new, but whether you're willing to sacrifice them for the greater good. That's the stance: Should we sacrifice one life to save thousands? Will you, as a protector of the people, put those people before your own found family? Yet what RT has Harriet say is: Oscar is replaceable. Which obviously makes her come across as an ass. Like the random soldier questioning Ironwood — or making Elm about to punch a defenseless Ren in her anger — it exists solely to show how bad these character are... even as they say pretty persuasive things.
The writing also continues to be confused about whether the Ace Ops are friends or not. Yang certainly didn't think so... up until she asks (rhetorically) whether Marrow would sacrifice himself for Elm, Harriet, and Vine. Since their introduction, the story has loudly insisted that the Ace Ops aren't friends... up until it's revealed ("revealed") that Harriet is actually gutted about Clover. So which is it? Are we supposed to believe that these are cold soldiers who only work together out of duty, or that they're a team who clearly love one another? I'd say that show has shown us the latter, but it doesn't seem to understand what point it's trying to make. Does this look like a soldier who doesn’t care?
Tumblr media
It’s especially weird when Ren again makes the claim that this is why they lost to Team RWBY. Because they're not a team.
...So is this why they did such a fantastic job fighting the geist, demonstrating such perfect teamwork that the group was open-mouthed impressed? Is this why they nearly took down a Maiden together? Is this why Ren, while furious at Yang and Jaune, was still able to work seamlessly with them to try and rescue Oscar? Do we think if Yang was suddenly beside Ruby again that the two would fail spectacularly in a fight because they had a minor disagreement?
This is now the third time RT has tried to excuse nerfing the Ace Ops with, "They disagree about things and are thus not friends and thus can't fight well together" — despite all evidence to the contrary — and it's getting really old.
Tumblr media
At one point Harriet tells Ren, "I had you pegged as the most level-headed of the bunch, but I guess you’re just as naïve" which, ignoring her then random claim that people are replaceable, is correct. I also pegged Ren as the most level-headed of the bunch considering he was just yelling at Yang for how much damage they've caused, all the mistakes they've made, and that maybe — just maybe — they should have tried harder to work with Ironwood. Yet now here he is, in a position to start that process, and the Ren we got in the snow is simply gone. He's fully Team Yang and Jaune again, facing off against the evil Ace Ops.
I knew this was going to happen, but it's still disappointing. The story gave Ren a great speech to appease those of us frustrated with the direction the story has taken... and now we’re back to ignoring that. Ren was told off for daring to question how great the group is, apparently thought it over in the snow, and is now of the opinion that yes, they are that great. People are going to die because of us? Who cares about that anymore! We will absolutely, single-handedly rescue Oscar and there's no reason why this might be a questionable choice when an entire city is on the line. Again, emotionally understandable (if we buy into the group suddenly loving Oscar this much), but it rings hollow right after making Ren the one person who was willing to look at the big picture.
Good news though: Jaune got the braincell this week! He suggests that they go in to try and rescue Oscar/provide intel, but won't stop the Ace Ops from launching the bomb when necessary.
Tumblr media
See, this is heroic. This is what the group should have done during the Mantle conflict: Volunteering to take the personal risk of facing off against Salem while letting Atlas try to escape. Basically, not forcing everyone else to risk their lives for their pipe dream, which is what Ren and Yang want by rejecting the bomb entirely. Jaune recognizes here that they can't prioritize Oscar over an entire city, but also that they may still be able to save him before the bomb is complete and ready to go. So they compromise, with JYR the only ones at risk.
Good job, Jaune!
Tumblr media
Winter agrees to this plan with a firm, "I outrank you" to Harriet. People are going to love that.
Oh, but in his anger Ren's semblance suddenly changes. So we're back to the ridiculous.
Tumblr media
Truthfully, I like this direction. Granted, I would have liked some buildup to it, especially since this is the second time this Volume that RWBY has dropped a major semblance change on us, but the idea itself is really cool. Ren can now see emotions! Awesome! And I don't mean that sarcastically. I actually think that’s a neat extension of his original semblance.
Too bad the story seems to think he's a mind reader.
Seriously, take a look back at the dialogue. What Ren sees are confetti-like petals floating around a person, their color seeming to determine their emotional state. Red means Harriet is mad, blue is sadness for Marrow, etc. But what Ren ends up saying is a great deal closer to mind reading. Harriet is angry about Clover and is gutted at his loss. Marrow is questioning his place here and wants to leave. These aren't base emotions, they're targeted thoughts and feelings about situations not immediately apparent from the verbal conversation. “In fact, you don’t want to be a part of it at all anymore." How does Ren know that? They just gave him telepathy instead of the cool power with firm limitations that the imagery suggests.
There are also some, uh... iffy implications in all this. For example, Ren allows Yang privacy by not reading her mind emotional state, but has no qualms about reading every one of the Ace Ops’. So privacy is only for the people you care about, huh?
Tumblr media
We could also say something about RT perpetuating unfortunate racial stereotypes: the two women of color are pure anger, the marginalized man is pure sadness, the Asian coded character is pure calm... and the white woman set to turn against the others gets a mix of all emotions. AKA, human complexity.
Tumblr media
To be clear, I don't think RT is doing this deliberately. Rather, they’re writers who have demonstrated time and time again that they don't have a good handle on depicting the sort of sensitive material that RWBY is infused with, and that extends to the mild, but still unfortunate, implications in scenes like this. Even if we ignore the iffy details — a benefit of the doubt that, at this point, many fans aren’t willing to grant — we're still left with the continuity errors. Visually, we're presented with a woman who is experiencing multiple emotions at once and is, therefore, torn. Yet Ren reads Winter definitively: "I know you [don't want this] either." It's yet another moment that makes me wonder how much communication there is between the writers and the animators, because too often the two seem to be at odds with each other.
Tumblr media
As the group prepares to go into the belly of the beast (literally!) we return to Ruby who is, once again, failing to make me believe she's this super compassionate person.
“Wait! What about Qrow and Robyn? Maybe if we get them out of wherever they’re held—”
Please tell me I'm not the only one who took issue with this? Ruby doesn't express an ounce of worry for her uncle, not even when she learns he's been arrested, and the one time she brings him up it's in the context of what he can do for them in this fight? Ruby doesn't grapple with whether to rescue her uncle (personal desire), or get the message to the world (her version of the heroic action) and then realize that, now that her duty is done, she can finally turn to the more selfish act of helping her immediate family. Instead, Ruby seems perfectly happy to let Qrow stay in prison up until she's unsure what to do next and thinks that maybe he has the answer. Heaven forbid Ruby think about rescuing him because she loves him.
Sadly, this Ruby is long gone.
Tumblr media
In recent years she's expressed no gratitude for him saving her life, no respect for him as her teacher, demonstrated incredibly little compassion for his own struggles, and outright told him that if he wasn't going to listen to her then he doesn't need to be part of the team. Then he's arrested and she doesn't care until she deems him useful again. Like the fandom wondering where the sisterly bond between Ruby and Yang went, I'm likewise wondering where the bond between Ruby and Qrow went.
May outright rejects this though, yelling that they still don't get it. “This is not a situation where everyone wins!"
Tumblr media
She tells the trio they have to choose for once: Are you going to help Mantle, or Atlas?
Tumblr media
...which means there's immediately a knock at the door, interrupting the moment where they have to decide.
See, this is just like Ren. The story keeps giving us moments where characters speak absolute truth, dangling the potential for the group to grow from these realizations... only to pull back before it goes anywhere. Ren is once again aligned with Yang and Jaune in their desire to save Oscar. May's demand is interrupted by the plot. If means nothing to give us these moments unless the story acts on them.
Tumblr media
It's Klein at the door. Whitley called him to help with Nora because I guess he's a doctor now, as well as a butler? Fine. Let’s run with it. Weiss is super pleased to see him and hugs Whitley for the good deed.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Why so shocked that Whitley would look out for another, Weiss? Could it be because he's had so little reason to be kind when everyone, including you, has treated him horribly? If Klein always had these medical skills — if you’ve grown up with a doctor — why didn’t you talk to your brother and ask if he knew how to contact him? And of course, she apologizes to Klein for her father’s actions, but not to Whitley for her own. Whitley's surprise isn't cute to me.
Tumblr media
Weiss stuck a weapon in his face, insulted him, sent him to his room like a toddler... and now is randomly hugging him because he did something she liked. The context of this scene doesn't paint Weiss in a good light. Like the rest of her friends, she only extends basic respect and kindness towards others when they're assisting her. Whitley was nothing to her until he suddenly proved himself useful. That's not cute sibling love, it's a love that's going to run out the moment Whitley puts a toe out of line, according to Weiss' unspoken list of what behavior keeps him in her good graces.
I believe that Klein cares for Whitley because he greets him kindly and gives him that shoulder pat on the way up. Whitley didn't need to first prove himself to Klein somehow and Klein didn't start this interaction by shoving a gun in Whitley's face, just in case he wouldn't let him through the door. They feel more like family than this hug does.
So yeah, Whitley and May have done more good this episode than our entire main cast. How about we just make this story about the side characters instead?
Tumblr media
We then hear a massive boom and the group runs out to find a crater. Penny has landed in front of the manor, which is pretty convenient considering we saw her pass out as she fell.
Tumblr media
She's somehow still in control despite the hack and apologizes to Ruby, then falls unconscious (again).
Tumblr media
And that's where we end! Definitely a cliffhanger, though a rather underwhelming one considering we already knew Penny was in serious trouble. As said at the start, this episode felt rather underwhelming to me, especially as a halfway point before a hiatus, and compared to some of the stuff we've seen previously. It's not bad per-se — especially if we ignore the issues that have been around for an age now, which is most of what this recap deals with — it's just not terribly exciting either. Everything of importance — Salem's attack, Oscar's rescue, Penny's demise, subordinates turning, Nora's condition, etc. — had already been established in previous episodes and very little of it moved forward. Ren's semblance is the only thing the episode gave us that we couldn't have (generically) guessed for ourselves between last Saturday and now.
So yeah, underwhelmed is the mood of the day, with a hefty dose of salt for everything that continues to be a story-breaking problem in this show. I will say though that, as has become the trend for this Volume, all the establishing shots are gorgeous. RWBY is, at the very least, pretty to look at.
As a final note, in lieu of the Bingo board (since, again, not a whole happens plot-wise) I want to point out something mentioned by a friend: how absolutely bonkers our timeline is now. We began the second day last episode with the sun rising (recall that Jaune had tried to sleep that night at the outpost. So it’s definitely sunrise as opposed to sunset).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And we re-confirm that it’s sunrise at the start of this episode.
Tumblr media
Yet throughout the episode many of our shots take place at night (note the stars behind the trio).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These moments with Ruby can't take place in the past because they're talking about the attack, an attack that only happened after Jaune's group met up with the Ace Ops and the geyser attacked — during early morning. I doubt I'm supposed to believe that it has been another full day of Salem starting an attack, a full day for the group to fly to the whale, a full day for Penny to fall, a full day which would put us at the end of the Volume’s timeline at only the halfway point... so I think RT is just going for the aesthetic of night shots without thinking about what that does to the continuity. It's a mess.
Not the highest praise to end on, but I’m working with what I’ve got lol. I feel as naïve as Oscar when I say that maybe Part II will be better.
Tumblr media
I will, of course, see you all in six weeks. Until then, I'll do my best to catch up on asks. Another doomed endeavor, but one can try!
A very Happy Holidays to all of you who celebrate and, as always, thanks so much for reading! 💜

Yesterday afternoon, it was brought to NP’s attention that this post had been made on Michael Nesmith's personal Facebook page. In the post, I (Miss Mini) am called out by name, mentioned as someone instructing others to call the police on Nez, and otherwise painted as a deranged fan who is harassing him and his employees. Further, "Nez" implored his fans and followers to "hurl insults" at me, along with two other women who were also named.
I never wanted to write this post. I never wanted things to get this bad, to where a fandom I once loved so deeply could be in utter shambles, and leave me reduced to tears over an unwarranted and completely baseless attack. But I can't stay silent any longer, nor can I watch as me and others are dragged through the mud and beaten down, with the people doing it using someone I care about as their primary weapon.
Some have said I don't have much in the way of weaponry against these particular individuals. For most people, it would be a daunting prospect, to go up against these people who have become the gatekeepers of the fandom. So I am using the one weapon I do have. The one thing that I have held onto for all these years, and that has kept me sane: The truth.
In 2011, I started talking to Michael Nesmith online. What began as private messaging in Videoranch3D ("whisper," as it's called there) soon became chatting on GoogleChat, and then a few months later, he asked me to Skype with him. I still remember the first time we spoke on video, when he asked me to "have lunch" with him. I remember the Annie Chun Miso Soup bowl I'd microwaved, and how it sat untouched on my desk the entire time because I was too nervous to eat.
I remember defending and passing my Master's thesis a few months later, and Nez being the second person that I told. I remember talking to him for hours, in text chat and over Skype, on topics as far-ranging and wide as God and metaphysics and religion and sex and love. I remember coming home from seeing one of Micky's solo shows at Parx Casino and Nez asking me how it went, eager to know if "Mick" had sold a lot of tickets. I remember having a three-way Skype chat with him and my best friend Lynsey Moon, who was a DJ in Videoranch3D at the time and how--without pretense or prompting--he played music for us.
I remember finally meeting Nez in person in 2013, after one of his solo shows in Somerville, Massachusetts. I remember seeing another show of his later that year in Englewood, New Jersey, and hanging out in his dressing room after. I remember how, again unprompted, he took my hand and held it all the way down in the elevator until we got to the parking lot. I remember another show that same year in Bay Shore on Long Island, sharing laughs and stories with his wonderful band, and how his keyboard player gave me a plate of rigatoni when I said I hadn't eaten, and made me a drink from the bar on the tour bus.
"Gin," I said to Nez as he sat across from me. "So I can say that I went to a sophisticated party where I got a little drunk on gin." He gave me such a pointed, hilarious look, but later insistently asked if I was okay to drive home.
Tumblr media
And I remember this comment, in this photo. I'd written about being asked to speak at the United Nations for World Autism Awareness Day, and out of nowhere, Nez commented, and said that he was proud of me.
It was March of 2011. We'd only known each other for two months. He knew me when. And he was proud of me.
I have loved the Monkees since I was 12 years old. I remember watching the show on Nick At Nite's Summer Block Party, and how much of a comfort it was, when I was being bullied so badly in school and already contemplating suicide because of it. The Monkees were four friends that I didn't have then, and who saved my life without even knowing it.
Fifteen years later, one of those men I admired so greatly, who was a hero of mine, told me that he was proud of me.
There just aren't words.
I never wanted to be someone who uses their relationship/friendship with someone to make a point. That is why I haven't talked about any of this publicly, haven't posted endless photos with Nez or video or any of the other countless receipts that I have.
Because I know where I stand with him.
Because at the Chiller Theatre convention in 2017, when I ended up in tears due to a stupid misunderstanding, Nez came over and took my hands again, and asked if I was okay.
Because that is who Michael Nesmith is.
That is the man I know. And that is why I have been heartbroken and worried as I've watched the two women in his employ, one of whom is his assistant, manipulate and use him for their own ends--regardless of what it's doing to his reputation and legacy, and not noticing or caring that all of this is the opposite of everything Nez has ever stood for.
Which brings us to yesterday. To the post that we are meant to believe Michael Nesmith wrote, telling his fans and followers to attack and insult me and two other women. A post that not only does not sound like it came from him, but that is so out of character as to nearly be laughable.
But I'm not laughing.
I know that some people will believe whatever they want to believe, no matter what I say. I know they will believe that I am jealous, because I don't work for Nez, and because the people who do have told them that I am. They can choose to believe that, and I can't do anything to stop them.
I can only say that I have nothing to be jealous of. And I have nothing to hide.
All I can do is share my truth, and that is what I have done. This post is public and will remain so, to be shared freely.
Thank you for reading, and please take care of yourselves and each other.

Some thoughts from listening to TPP 1.18 “The Final Resting Place”
-I’m not saying I like Miasma per se, but she really said fuck villain monologues, just shoot the hero in the head, and I kinda respect her for that
-Juno Steel was all “He pulls off the mask, and there he is. Peter Nureyev, looking like a knight in stolen armor” in the tenderest voice and my heart was all 💖💖💖
-“Just because we’ve come up against something unexpected doesn’t mean we should jump to conclusions” “honestly, I would love to, but I cannot think of a single goddamn conclusion to jump to.” Ok mood.
-The way Juno acted all gruff like normal and pretended not to be worried but you could hear real fear in his voice the second Nureyev didn’t immediately respond when Juno called his name? Yeah.
-I KNEW she wasn’t really dead!!!!
-I KNEW she wasn’t really human!!!!!!!
-When Miasma broke into Juno’s monologue to speak in unison with him during the most frightening part of his decription of her monstrous form? Chills. I can’t think of a single other time his narration has even been acknowledged, and she just took it over, and then kept literally responding to his internal narration like it was a conversation, it’s just.....it’s just such a cool way to use a convention of the genre (the fast-talking PI’s hardboiled narration, which is something Juno pretty clearly relies on emotionally) to show how invasive and frightening the mondreading is for him, it’s just, it’s fantastic
-“wow, Miasma ate....a lot of soup”
-Juno will see an opportunity to sacrifice himself and be like “is anybody going to take this” and not wait for an answer
-Juno finally confessing his love and his trust and telling Nureyev that he almost managed to believe they could have a future together, all with Nureyev sobbing on the other side of the door and begging him not to sacrifice himself this way? Holy fuck. I didn’t think we’d get such an extended and dramatic and exquisite confession scene, but I should have known the writers would come through for us
-ok I know Peter was trying to be responsible and have the conversation they needed to have about whether Juno was really committed to this or not, and I know he was trying to tell Juno that he’d respect his decision no matter what it was, but what he actually ended up saying was “choose between leaving mars with me right now and Never Seeing Me Again” and that....wasn’t a reasonable way to handle that conversation. At all. Among other things neither of them was handling in a reasonable way.
-.....which doesn’t mean my heart didn’t outright fucking stop when I heard Juno’s belt/keys jingle as he got dressed and I realized he was leaving
-“my name is Juno Steel. I’m a private eye, and this is my city. I’m not proud of it, but that doesn’t mean it’s not worth saving. And hell, it’s not like I had anywhere better to go.” Ok that ruined me, it really did.
-(but also Peter Nureyev canonically gets giggly during pillowtalk and I think that’s a really important point on which to touch)

Plus Ultra! Go Beyond the Screen!
celebrity AU drabble series, 3K~, quirkless actor Midoriya Izuku gets interviewed
[Read on AO3.]
GO BEYOND!
A conversation with Japan’s rising star Midoriya Izuku on standing up on set and off as the next symbol for peace. A GQ Japan exclusive.
By Taneo Tokuda | Correspondent
[Image of Midoriya Izuku, leaning next to a window, his body arched off the wall. His head is tilted up and over towards the camera, the left side of his body illuminated from the light coming in, the right side fading into the shadows. He’s wearing a sheepish grin, tugging at the tie around his neck with a single hooked finger, jacket sliding off his shoulders. He’s wearing Best Jeanist’s exclusive non-denim line, and the monocolor layering of velvets in the lighting make his green hair, red shoes, and tie pop in rich color even more.]
I’d been warned that Midoriya Izuku has no regard for outdated formality. He’s far from callous or jaded — sweet and optimistic are two words often used to describe him — but propriety is something he has never been concerned with.
I’d been warned, but I didn’t understand.
Any journalist who’s worked the entertainment beat for a while knows there’s a cadence every interview follows. The details may change, but there are conventional practices that help an interview go smoothly for both the interviewer and subject, to make the most of a complicated relationship between celebrities and the media.
This interview starts behind the scenes, as most do, with the e-mail I send out to Midoriya’s manager, laying out a request to speak with his charge. The enthusiastic response comes just an hour later and references details from a number of stories I’d written across the entire span of my career.
It isn’t his manager’s response. It’s Midoriya’s.
That was my second warning to assume nothing, but I still stumble into Midoriya’s apartment expecting a clean, contemporary, moderately-sized apartment. It’s rare to host interviews in celebrity homes, and when it happens, it’s meant to be a statement — power, wealth, pride, affected sincerity.
Instead, Midoriya opens the door halfway and apologizes because he moved in recently and there’s still a stack of boxes blocking him from opening it any further. The door handle nearly catches between the buttons of my shirt as I squeeze through the crack. Once inside, I trip over his trademark red shoes and nearly take him down in the process.
He catches me in his arms and says with a wry grin, “Don’t worry, I am here!”
That, of course, is a classic reference to his latest role: All Might. All for One will be a Netflix reboot of the old '80s superhero film franchise that turned Toshinori Yagi into a household name. In a casting coup that stunned fans and industry insiders alike, Midoriya fell into the role shortly after making headlines for saving a life during a villain attack on the set of long-running soap opera The Quirked and the Quirkless. The villain had been looking for Toshinori, and in his absence, grabbed a crewmember hostage. Midoriya attacked the villain despite having no quirk.
Soon after, Toshinori reversed his longstanding refusal to produce an All Might reboot and gave the studio a green light — with a stipulation. Just as the franchise had brought him up from obscurity, so must the franchise fill its ranks with youths aiming to catch their big breaks. Enter: Midoriya Izuku.
Midoriya sets me back down gently — yes, he picked me up when I fell, even though I’m a full half meter taller than him — and I’m more inclined to see his suitability as Toshinori’s successor.
Physically, he still looks nothing like his mentor. Where Toshinori is buff, Midoriya is lean, tall to his short, loud to his soft. Toshinori held his strength in the brash, nigh-cocky attitude that got him into as much trouble as himself as it did in the show as All Might. Midoriya carries strength like woven spider silk; it’s graceful and dangerous, but all too easy to overlook for those unused to subtlety. But he carries the same bright aura of unwavering love and determination.
More to the point, I also felt his arms and abs in the fall, and he may not look like he has the muscles of All Might, but they are definitely there.
“You can take a seat anywhere in the living room if you’d like,” Midoriya says, ushering me down the hall with a light hand on my back. “Breakfast will be ready in just a few minutes, but I haven’t put together the kitchen table yet, so living room it is.”
“Breakfast? Did we decide on a working breakfast?” I replied.
“I couldn’t invite a guest into my home without offering snacks! Since this interview coincides with breakfast, I made breakfast.” He pushes me towards the sofa and wags a finger at me when I try to follow him to the kitchen anyway. “No guests allowed to hover or help in the kitchen. It’s too small!”
The rest of the apartment is half unpacked, and haphazardly at that. Boxes are open, dumped out into piles on the floor where they will likely be permanently placed. I perch on the arm of a ratty sofa by the only portion of the room that’s been set up. It’s a veritable shrine to pro heros, fictional and real alike. Two of the five shelves are devoted solely to All Might merchandise.
Midoriya appears behind me, as if by quirk. “Ah, do you collect hero memorabilia? I’ve been a big fan of All Might since I was little, and then I started following hero society in general when I got into middle school, so I’ve built up a lot over the years especially rare items like if you look at the back corner there’s a particularly cool figure of All Might from the emerald era which if you remember was received so poorly that most of the merch was shelved in one location and subsequently destroyed during a villain attack…” He goes on without end or pause, taking me through the history of each item on the third shelf. At minute six, he abruptly tenses mid-sentence. I can almost feel the heat from his red face as he starts stammering apologies for wasting my time and gingerly puts his collection away again.
“You've got a lot of stuff I haven’t seen. It’s interesting.” It makes me uncomfortable how much he clearly doesn’t believe me. “It’ll be good content, that you have such a long history being an All Might fan.” He shrugs my words aside, and gestures behind me to a giant spread he’d laid out on the coffee table before seeing my interest in his collection.
We sit. For a moment, the only sound in the apartment is the clatter of silverware, the muffled bustle of Tokyo’s streets at midmorning a soothing counterpoint. I’m considering how to break the lingering tension I caused. But then —
“I’m a quirkless soap opera actor who seemingly got the biggest role of the decade for doing something completely unrelated to acting. I’m optimistic, not an idiot.” There’s a taut line to his shoulders again, at odds with the quiet, delicate way he drinks his miso soup.
His eyes trail back to the curio shelf of hero merchandise. A heaviness builds between us in the seconds it takes him to think. “I grew up in a neighborhood hostile to me and my mother. I mumble my thoughts out loud and have an obsession for heroes that edges past societally acceptable as an adult. I have no quirk, she had no husband, we had no money. Any insult you could say about us, I’ve heard it.”
He looks me dead in the eyes and leans forward. I can’t help but mirror him. “It would be disrespectful to everyone who supported me to get here if I let the back talk get to me. I worked hard for this role, and I earn it with every new day of effort I put into it. All Might is the symbol for peace, and I intend to embody that legacy. No one will be able to doubt me when I’m done.”
Anyone who’s familiar with Midoriya’s reputation knows not to be surprised by his humility, but it’s a revelation to see this drive, his earnest focus pinning down my full attention. The last bit of the puzzle that was his casting choice is answered in one overwhelming look. If All for One does it right, his magnetism is going to Detroit Smash every heart in Japan.
“The waffles!” He springs up and mutters his way back to the kitchen, cutting past the moment. “I forgot the waffles, Kirishima gave me a waffle maker the shape of All Might’s crest as a housewarming gift, they’re so cute and surprisingly detailed…” In just a few seconds he plops the plate down amid the overfull table and settles back into his seat with a smile. “So? Should we get started?”
Interview has been edited for length and clarity. For the full article, visit us online. Catch the first season of All for One on Netflix, streaming xx xxx.
[Image of Midoriya Izuku sitting outdoors on some sidewalk steps in workout gear, leaning back on one arm, the other hand raised to cover his face from the sun. He’s wearing bright green short shorts and a very loose tank top, the arm holes cut out so deep that the angle lets the photographer capture the sheen of oil and sweat across his ribs and back as light filters through the shirt. One sock is pulled up taut, the other scrunched down, same classic red shoes still on his feet. His legs and arms and hands are haphazardly wrapped in carefully grimed bandages, as is his makeup, smudges of dirt across his cheeks along with make up to bruise his lips a deep, pouty red. Boxing gloves hang over his shoulders, and a bandana mimicking the famed mouth guard from All Might’s most iconic outfit hangs around his neck.]
TT: Congratulations on your first starring role! How does the move from semi-recurring character to protagonist feel?
MI: It’s a huge challenge, one I’m incredibly excited for! My character in Quirkless wasn’t supposed to be mine. I’d already been involved with the show as a quirkless consultant but one day on set, they’d had a huge scheduling conflict, and Director Ryuko remembered I’d originally auditioned for the show for a character that was ultimately cut. She brought me in as a literal last minute replacement, and soon enough a three-episode run expanded into a semi-regular spot next season. At least with All for One I’ve had tons of time to prepare.
TT: Take us through what it was like getting the role of All Might.
MI: I think the media explained the villain attack that brought me to the studio’s attention plenty. What's more important is when after I recovered, Toshinori-san contacted me and connected me to his talent agency, and my new manager was the one that successfully nabbed me an audition for the new show. They had us go through a few standard readings and chemistry checks, and then I got the part.
TT: You auditioned?
MI: I did! That’s what makes the rumors of favoritism even more frustrating. I promise I didn’t get the role because I stopped a villain attack on set! Well, I hope I didn’t.
[File photograph of Toshinori Yagi and Midoriya Izuku post-hostage situation. The stage is in disarray, black goop covering the furniture and floor of a fake hospital waiting room in a thick layer of sticky slime. They stand off-center in the foreground, Midoriya rubbing a fist over his eye, exhausted, possibly crying, as Toshinori pulls him into his side for a hug. Both have shock blankets draped across their shoulders. Emergency respondents case and clean the scene in the background.]
TT: How does it feel to take up the mantle of one of the most iconic comic book characters of all time?
MI: I’d be lying if I didn’t say nerve-wracking, but I’m more excited than anything. I’ve dreamed about this since I was 5, when the doctors first told me I’d never have a quirk and never be a licensed hero. All that love was redirected toward All Might. Some people might say being too big a fanboy will make playing him hard, but I’ve been preparing for this my entire life, and that’s what I’m trying to hold on to instead of anxiety. Toshinori-san has also been a spectacular mentor to me through this whole process.
TT: It's been said that Toshinori-san implemented a rigorous vetting process to work in any position on the crew. Recommendations, mentorship networks — because everyone is new to film.
MI: That’s only true to a certain extent. I wouldn’t say most of us are complete newcomers; we’ve all been around the industry for a fair number of years making our careers off it one way or another. We definitely wouldn’t have gotten hired to such prominent roles without Toshinori’s interference, yes. Because of his stipulation, the studio wanted to minimize as much of the havoc inexperience might cause such a beloved, big budget reboot by offering us close, mandatory support networks featuring industry professionals who’ve been working in their field for decades.
So far, the idea has really worked out well. We get to implement fun new ideas we don’t realize are impossible yet, and the mentors temper our more […] impractical ideas with logic and experience. The cast also has gotten a lot of support from the old cast of the '80s run!
TT: You’re known for being an advocate for quirkless rights in the entertainment industry. Has that impacted the way you approach your career and what opportunities you take?
MI: It isn’t just the entertainment industry I’m interested in for my advocacy work. Society’s rabid obsession with quirks is a problem across all of Japan, for both the quirkless and those with quirks. But as an actor, I happen to have personal insight with the roadblocks that prevent quirkless individuals from succeeding in film. We make up a fourth of the Japanese population, but less than 1% of the Japanese Film Union, in the mere century from when quirks first showed up across the globe. There’s no other explanation for such a miserly diversity rate than discrimination.
Studios have gotten so used to using quirks to sift through application stacks, looking for who can offer the most with just a quirk name and description. Toshinori-san has easily admitted that the electricity he emits when engaging his strength quirk was one of the reasons he won the role of All Might over better known actor Todoroki Enji. It was one less special effect the studio would have to spend money and time on. Viewing accommodation as a costly complication is historically dangerous to all types of minorities across the globe. How am I supposed to compete when people think I can’t offer anything unique compared to the host of wild quirks out there?
TT: Wow, that’s quite the speech.
MI: I’ve practiced a few times.
TT: Really?
MI: Quirk discrimination was my thesis topic at UA.
TT: You went to UA? That didn't show up in my research.
MI: Oh, I […] was in their support program for a while.
TT: Why did you decide to pursue acting instead? They don’t have a fine arts program, do they?
MI: As much as I love support work, it’s a stressful field. [Laughs] I started looking for an outlet that had nothing to do with hero work when an old friend dragged me onto a set. I’d completely forgotten how much I loved acting, and it wasn’t long before I decided to pursue that over support work, for however long it would have me.
TT: Would you ever consider returning to support work?
MI: Yes, but it gets harder the longer you’ve been away. I still keep up my qualifications, and keep up with my old classmates. Some consulting here and there. But for now, I’m happy using my background to help me act a better All Might.
[Photograph of Midoriya Izuku sitting in an office chair, facing three-quarters towards the camera even as he lays half across a desk. The decor is rich: old, dark wooden furniture, ornate work across the frame of the chair and desk, half-filled bookshelves in the background. His cheek rests against his arm stretched along the edge of the deck; one leg is tucked under the seat and the other is extended out. His outfit is artfully ripped name brand jeans and a tight shirt, color blocked in All Might’s classic red, white, and blue. Tiny figurines of All Might in his various costumes across all his comic book and screen appearances dot across his body as if they’ve climbed across his body, and Midoriya is an Atlas holding the weight of these ideals across his shoulders and arms and legs, a Gulliver tied down and overwhelmed. But his expression is vibrant, determined. Not quite a smile, but nowhere near defeated.]
TT: Does it bother you, having your quirklessness constantly be the focus of your career and identity?
MI: Of course! I’m a lot more than the superpower I don’t have. I’m a pretty private person, but I want to do great things. I want to inspire people, to make everyone feel safe and like they belong. If that means I have to feel some discomfort, it’s more than worth it. I’m a big kid with a therapist, so I’m prepared to balance my needs with those of my career.
TT: I’m not helping, am I?
MI: Like I said, I’ve deliberately opened myself up to that focus when I’ve put myself out there as someone willing to talk about these important issues publicly. You’re not asking anything I wouldn’t expect of any good interviewer.
TT: Speaking of privacy, your co-worker Todoroki Shouto is infamous for his taciturn personality and complete seclusion from the public eye, even during personal interviews. What is it like working with him on set?
MI: I have a bone to pick with you journalists about that! Remember what I was saying about how quirk reputations hurt those with strong quirks as much as those without? Todoroki Shouto is a wonderful person, and I’m so glad we get to work together. But boy, that reputation of his does him a disservice. He’s more than just Endeavor’s son and a powerful quirk. […] He’s his own man with a lot to say — it’s just no one’s asked him the right questions, yet. Once you do, you’ll find he shines brighter than any of the characters he’s played. It’s frustrating to see a good man overlooked again and again in favor of easier topics like a flashy quirk and flashy father.
TT: One last question. Isn’t it a hassle to squeeze past those boxes each day to use the front door?
MI: I don’t use the front door.
TT: Then…?
MI: Wouldn’t you like to know? ■

My Friend, you are either on my side, by my side or in my fucking way. The choice is yours.
That title though.... mmmm gurl, she's a banger!
Franz, (Yes that could be short for Franzia Boxed wine, but you may never know!) How are you? What is up. What's the hot gossip, what are the cool jams, what are the kids listening to? Oh, sorry- let me go fix my hair.
Tumblr media
Let's get to to it. The dirty.. Man, I am clearly out of practice. Like a Football Player trying to throw an "Arnold Phillip Shortman" Shaped head. Yes, I googled what is, "Hey Arnolds's last name."
Tumblr media
Thanks Google.
Is there a food that stimulates getting over writer's block? Hmm shall I goog? NO.
Let's say its pickles. Well shit, now i want pickles...
Please hold as your creativity loads, and your blockages dissolve. The duration of this hold time is- One 12 oz. Keystone Light, and 5 Baby Kosher Milwaukee Pickles.
Tumblr media
Some may think this is an odd match but goodonya, can't hate til ya try it mate!
Speaking of trying new things..... Head over to Spotify and listen to some new Jammin Gems that will bring your earholes some much needed love. Eargasms for an approximate 43 minutes. That’s Spotify.com and Search for : Maiden of Musical mixes and wham-bam, Hey thanks The Sam! Be taken on a musical venture that you didn't even realize you needed.
Lately, the life has thrown weird things at me. And not the good weird, the bad kind. The kind that is like biting into a piece of under-cooked meat, or opening a Keystone Light and having it explode under all the pressure.
Taking unfulfilling jobs to "make dat monaaaay", takes a toll my friends. Floundering and attaching to careers that bring little happiness is not a way to live. Especially when over 958937597387425982 hours of your life "earning dat money". So what? Quit a job, take a new one? Get fired from your current role, out of circumstances that have been out of your control? No.
Find ways to rally.
Be your own hero.
Which is why this week's Eargasm features are:
Adelitas Way featuring New Medicine - Own It
Weezer- Hero
Tumblr media
Adelitas Way!
Mm! These men do not get enough credit in our Rock community. So what that Rick doesn't ALWAYS scream like an angry banshee after stubbing his Toes! The utter Chemistry the band brings to live performances, and how cohesive they are is mighty respectable. I have had the pleasure of chatting with these fellas a few times, and seeing over 3 performances. I have witnessed Rick stage dive into the crowd and get carried football fields away, to a completely different set. They bring their A game every.single.damn.time!
Own It. That is what they do, have done and will continue doing! This catchy tune is about owning who you are as a Homo-Sapien. Positive and Negative traits, ya just gotta embrace em’. Or, Own It. Own who the the hell you are, and never apologize for it, and Own It alllllllways. <3 Ain’t afraid to own it.
Tumblr media
Weezer. Man I have loved them since May 10th, 1994. (If you are a WEEZER BUFF, you will know this date.)
5. That is how old I would have been. Excuse me, while I go sob about old agenessism happening that I, for one, did not sign up for.
Back to Weezer.
They are on my bucket list to see. Punky, Uppity Happiness that floods the ole earholes with joyous tempos and lyrical ear worms that continuously flood your brainbox. Mmhmm. No friends, fam, 3 fans, I am not friends with Weezer, personally. YET.
This song reminds me of my fellow DNA sharers, who happen to be the other 2 offspring of my Mother. Shout Out Sissies.
Sissies- HA. No, these 2 do not have a sissy gene in their Den-ahhh, and it is so admirable. I won’t overshare, or get soups sentimental. Role Models, Blueprints, H.B.I.C.’s. Yes. Check, Check. My sisters have been trailblazers from day one. They don’t do things in conventional, normal ways- they pave their own damn paths and do it their way, and that my friends is the most badass thing I for one will ever witness.
SO, what did we learn?
Don’t worry. I don’t remember either.
Jkrowling. Own it, and Be Your Hero.
Well, that about does it folks.  Until next time, this has been my pleasure.  Or something. I blame the Keystone for my lack of sense making.
Cheers! xo
The Sam
Happy Mother's day!

The Top 10 Songs I have heard for the first time in 2020!
Honorable Mentions
Space Oddity by Rare Earth - An amazing cover to a great song.
Highway to Oblivion by Dragon Force - So frikkin impressive to see played on such a high level.
Watts Up Danger by JT Music, Omega Sparks and SWATS - A great opening song for Death Battle.
Hex: Ruin You’ve Been Ruined by the Trapper - Just frikkin fun.
Alexa Bliss by Bowling for Soup - Bliss is just fun.
What Did You Say from Black Friday - Starkid continues to do amazing work.
DOOM CROSSING: Eternal Horizons by The Chalkeaters feat. Natalia Natchan - These two games were robbed at the Game Awards.
Puppets Never Die by Kyle Allen Music featuring Elsie Lovelock - A nice song about a niche game.
Dance Magic Until The End Of Time (Retro Ver) by SU Mashups - Heard this in my first Online Brony Convention.
Mighty Wings and Hadoukens by James Rolfe and Friends - Just a fun surprise to see.
You’re the One from B.E.R. - While this didn’t make the list, the Night Begins to Shine 2 definitely tops my “Best Episode of the Year”.
Black Panther Beat Box 2 by Verbalase - I voted for Sonic because I felt his Beatbox benefited more with his connections. But since this list is not about beat boxing...
Nothing Left to Lose by Caleb Hyles & Rebecca Parham - First time I heard this song I thought it was from Frozen 2.
Future and Enemy from Mystery Skulls - Mystery Skulls continue to be great.
Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods - Hero: Song of Hope | FULL ENGLISH VER. Cover by We.B Ft @Caleb Hyles - Hero is just a great song and its nice to see an english cover.
Ikari from Death Battle - A great way to end Death Battle’s Season.

#10 - Hey, Hey, Hey by Miz and Morrison
There are three types of villains I like: Very Intimidating ones (see Jason), very humorous ones (see Doofenshmirtz) and those who can do both (see the Joker). The Miz is category #2. He has always been (for the most part) an entertaining heel that you can’t help but enjoy to boo. And this video with Morrison is just one example of just how great he is as a heel. I hope next year gives Miz a chance to truly show he is a Main eventer.
Tumblr media
#9 - Don't by NakamuraEmi
So how did I find out about this anime opening from an anime I never seen before? I saw a video called "The Worst Selling Anime | The Laughing Salesman (1989)" by Kenny Lauderdale. And I am very interested in seeing this series. With the newest one using Don’t by NakamuraEmi which has a very fun beat. Even if I don’t know the lyrics, the song is just fun.
Tumblr media
#8 - Always Near by Glowstick Entertainment Featuring Rockit Gaming & MC Goldiloxx
From an Anime I’ve never seen to a game I never played. From the people who brought you the Horror Pacman Game Dark Deception comes a peppy music video about a Chicken who is in love with you. If you want to know what a Yandare is, this is the music video for all of them. And honestly its just fun. I would love to see a music video with Rosy from Archie Comics.
Tumblr media
#7 - You’re Mine by League of Shadows and Let Me Save You With My Love by Up Past Eight
They’re both great songs and I wish I can have the clean MP3s of them. Shame they haven’t been released like another cartoon on the list. But still between the dark and sinister music of the League of Shadows and the hopeful music of Up Past Eight, these two songs are definitely songs I have and will continue to hear in the next year and beyond.
Tumblr media
#6 - You Will Be Okay from Helluva Boss
Speaking of “wishing I have a clean MP3 of songs”, here’s You Will Be Okay from Helluva Boss. As Diregentleman said, this episode turned a one note joke character into a very interesting character having to deal with coming out and the consequences of it. And this song really helps express that. I do hope they eventually release it.
Tumblr media
#5 - Where Evil Grows by the Poppy Family
Is Jim Carey a good Robotnik? Not really. But I will admit it is great to see Classic Jim Carey comedy again. He really made Robotnik his own character and it helped with the movie establishing its own thing beyond being a game adaptation. And this dance sequence is a perfect analogy of the film. Don’t take it too seriously and just enjoy.
Tumblr media
#4 - Luigi's Lament by Huge Davies
You think Mario can pull off a Power Ballad? No! Only Luigi can! Its just fun to see Luigi sing about his regrets with such energy! I enjoy Mashed works and this is just an example of the fun spin they put in video game parodies. I would definitely give them a follow if I was you.
Tumblr media
#3 - Die By My Knife by the Slashstreet Boys
Boy Band Music are bangers, but if only they had lyrics that catered to my likes. Black Panther showed it against Sonic and the Slashstreet Boys prove that those songs are indeed popular for a reason. Just so creative to see horror icons create a boy band. This song is very enjoyable and would have been #1 if it wasn’t for others.
Tumblr media
#3 - Monster by Marceline
I was not a fan of the Adventure Time Finale. To me, it felt like they were basically saying “we got these ideas still and we’re still going to show them” and thanks to HBO Max, they are. But a big positive is their newest one focusing on Marceline and Bubblegum’s relationship. And this song is possibly the best of the series.
Tumblr media
#2 - Another Song About the Weekend Acoustic by A Day to Remember
Is it possible to miss someone you never knew until it was too late? This song plus the end credits can make me constantly tear up and I think that’s a great showing how how much these people miss him. And it was my #1 song of the year for most of it until recently...
Tumblr media
#1 - A Charity Performance of “You Say Run” from “My Hero Academia” (feat. 80+ Musicians & Cast Members)
Days before the end of the year, someone on Discord linked to this song. Almost 9 minutes from a huge collaboration of musical people delivering a cover of You Say Run that is of no other way to describe it: epic. With Everything that is happening, this definitely deserves to be #1.
