Day 15 of Sirentober / Doctober
Orpheus / Wait
I was originally going to draw the off-broadway Hadestown Orpheus and Eurydice but just like the doubt, the brainrot came in and demanded I draw the lawyers
AND SO I ENDED UP DOING A DOODLE PAGE HEHE
I’ve only ever listened to the off-broadway and the original concept album bc my sister got me into Hadestown back in like 2018
There’s so many lines where I’m just like “!!!! THAT WORKS SO WELLLLL” like fr?? I have many many thoughts
For the fates, I couldn’t decide between Dahlia or Iris, but I ended up going with Dahlia
ALSO THE TOP OF MILES’S SHIRT AND HIS SKIRT BEING THE CRAVAT 🤭🤭🤭
AND GODOT TELLING PHOENIX HE CAME BACK FROM HELL TO FIGHT HIM SO HIM BEING THE KING OF THE UNDERWORLD HEHEHEHEH
AND THE NEON LIGHTS WOULD BE LIKE HIS MASK AND AND AND
Sorry I have many thoughts :))

Why is no one talking about the fact that Jon Jon Briones' Hermes calls Orpheus "anak" and shouts "ISA, DALAWA, ISA, DALAWA, TATLO" instead of "AND A ONE, A TWO, A ONE, TWO, THREE, FOUR"?

I think it's a shame they didn't get anyone from hadestown in the show. Like, ik theater acting is different than TV acting, but still. I would've lost my shit tbh
Like, imagine you're a demigod, and you finally meet your father, and this is your father

Life changing
He should've played Poseidon!!I know this is Hermes' actor but that's the joke :]

I adore the fact that we get to see Orpheus’s not only be “blessed” by the gods with his voice, but also have a real connection with them. Now often times being blessed or favored by the Gods never goes well— usually it’s a few years of good stuff happening then a gnarly end or string of bad luck (no different here). What I like is that here Orpheus has a tangible relationship with at least two of the gods. Being Hermes Ward and Persephone? Well she just likes him.
His relationship with Hermes was expanded in a sort of unseen backstory, in Working on a song Anïas goes into detail on how he came to be under his wing. He was partly raised by his mother but she’d be gone for impossible lengths of time on her own, so she left him with Hermes. The idea of a minor goddess showing up on the doorstep to a train station with a wiggling magical toddler and going ‘here’ is wildly entertaining to me— even more so for Hermes just to “alright” and keep him around. No better city for a musically inclined kid either.
I love how some of this is seen throughout the show, most of the time and especially in the beginning Hermes watches him sing with the proudest look on his face. Yet he’s not entirely easy going, there’s several times through the show as both a narrator and a father figure he tries to snap him out of things or explain what has to happen and how. That amusement can very easily turn into frustration one of my favorite lines is in Chant where Hermes tries to pull Orpheus back into the story and realize what’s happening with Eurydice - he’s yelling at this point “talk about oblivious”. He’s stern, he’s annoyed but the same man who’s told a million bedtime stories to the same kid.
Hermes wants to interfere so badly. Do you know how easy it would be for him to tell Eurydice to not take the deal or to get Orpheus away from his table? But he can’t on two front. Being a God and being a Narrator. In stories like this there’s just nothing you can do and that must kill him… he has some stake in this game! He raised that boy! How many times has he seen this happen wanting things to go right and how many times has he has to sing it again? It’s the fates that keep messing with things— the world of mortals goes the way they want and they’ll be damned if they change it any time soon.

Now persephone? She’s fun, honestly she gives “Wine aunt” energy. Popping in sometimes completely unannounced and slipping candy and drinks across the counter to her favorites. She would have seen Orpheus since he was a child as she always comes through the same station (hell it’s Hermes line. This man does everything it’s mentioned in the book he’s also conductor). She adores Orpheus, he’s a sweet guy and a generous server. He takes her coat and always makes sure everybody has a full glass and is happy. I can imagine it being a late spring night and he’s still at the bar listening to her stories— complaining or just talking to talk— not out of obligation but out of a genuine hope for friendship.
And Eurydice? The girl is brand new to town, no one’s seen her before but Persephone instantly offers her a drink and to dance and enjoy herself. She then sees the look the two have in their eyes and all but pushes them together like Barbie’s. Once again I morn her cut Chant II line talking about how they reminded her what true love was. She also takes a different route then Hermes by trying to interfere directly. She speaks up! She yells! She makes Hades listen, I think she actually realizes— unlike Orpheus and Eurydice — that she’s just as trapped by the narrative. So she steps in…she tries, it does little difference though.
Unlerelated note but if the gifs are getting annoying tell me

🌟CASTING MY MUTUALS IN HADESTOWN!🌟
Why? Because I feel like it! 😂
Orpheus:
Sequoia (@flowers-floating-in-space, top)
Songbird (@deadboywalking227, middle)
Eden (@songboylyric, bottom)
Tumblr media
Nicholas Barasch as Orpheus in the picture. (National Tour)
Reasons for Hibiscus: You give me those ethereal flowery vibes that Orpheus has! /pos
Reasons for Serenade: One of your names is literally Songbird. Nuff said. (Though admittedly the songbird is technically Eurydice in the show, the HT Instagram sometimes refers to Orpheus as a songbird.)
Reasons for Eden: I don't know, you just give me Orpheus vibes- /pos
Eurydice:
Mischa (@that-f-cked-up-bitch, top)
Natalia (@nats-comet, middle)
Ivory (@https-envy, bottom)
Tumblr media
Amaya Braganza as Eurydice in the picture. (National Tour)
Reasons for Sydney: I just know you'd be a great Eurydice. How? I don't know! but I do XD
Reasons for Natalia: You have no idea how badly I need a Talia-ified version of "Flowers" and/or "All I've Ever Known". I just know you'd kill it /pos
Reasons for Ivory: You vaguely remind me of her and also I think you'd play up the scrappy/somewhat chaotic aspect of Eurydice's character in a super fun way.
Hermes:
Vellichor (@p-3-t-r-1-ch-0-r)
Tumblr media
André de Shields as Hermes in the picture. (Broadway)
Reasons: You are the cryptid, British, and affectionately bloodthirsty (/pos) Hermes that the world needs!
Persephone:
Zeep (@ziipzeepzop-eez)
Tumblr media
Jewelle Blackman as Persephone in the picture. (Broadway)
Reasons: You're both altos, and both of you have motherly/wine aunt energy! That's reason enough XD (when a zeep-ified version of "our lady of the underground" is brought into the world, i can die happy)
Hades:
Cipher (@cipher-of-the-round-table)
Tumblr media
Phillip Boykin as Hades in the picture. (Broadway)
Reasons: You just give me Hades vibes! I dunno!
The Fates:
Starling (@word-to-the-wise, left)
Charolette (@meowydoe, middle)
Satanic (@satanic-witchcraft, right)
Tumblr media
Dominique Kempf, Nyla Watson and Belén Moyano as The Fates in the picture. (National Tour)
Reasons for Piper: I feel like you'd have an absolute blast during When the Chips Are Down. Also a pink-haired Fate? Yes please!!
Reasons for Ginger: You'd be the most fun devious Fate ever (you'd be the one who's always waving at eurydice)
Reasons for Satanic: Satanic-ified version of "Nothing Changes"? Hell. Yes.

Since Hadestown is in Atlanta, I went to go and see it last night. Here are things I noticed during the Hadestown performance while watching all of the actors/background actors because I've never seen it live before despite knowing the soundtrack.
-Ophrues rolling and tearing up a piece of paper into a flower to give to Eurydice
-hades and Persephone drinking and playing a game while waiting for her to leave.
-when Orpheus Is singing epic 1, Persephone stands on a balcony like she can hear him and is basking in the sun for a moment, but when she looks back at Hades her smile fades.
- during living it up on top, Persephone gives Hades a kiss on the cheek before leaving, and Eurydice hesitates In taking off her coat and dancing with the others before Persephone pulls her in. She pours some of her flask into Eurydice flask and even takes her to dance. After Orpheus makes the toast and everyone drinks all but Persephone shutter at how strong it is.
-during all I've ever known, Persephone looks longing at Orpheus and Eurydice (he has the kind of love for her, that you and I once had)
-while Persephone is gone, Hades reads the paper.
- Orpheus and Eurydice are still holding each other until the end of way down Hadestown, when Eurydice pulls away during "kinda makes you wonder how it feels" and she makes eye contact with Hades, who lowers his shades to took at her. Orpheus jumps between the two, and Persephone angrily pulls her hand away from hades.
- During Chant when Hades said "think of it as my desire for you" he attempts to brush Persephones cheek but she pulls away. During the sequence leading up to "the gods have forgotten the song of their love!" hades and Persephone are on opposite sides of the revolving stage with the workers of Styx between them, symbolizing the wall between them. Hades reaches out in frustration from the other side of the wall, but Persephones turns her head. At the end of the song when Hades said "think of It as my embrace of you" Persephone was so upset she slammed the doors
- the rattling in songbird vs rattle snake are coins that Eurydice put over her eyes
-while they were in the underworld, Persephones always kept her distance from hades, standing rather stiffly.
- there were no background characters on stage during our lady of the underground (they were probably getting ready) it was just Persephone and Hermes sneaking around and having a drink behind Hades back and laughing.
- During the way down Hadestown reprise, eurydice and Fates are the only ones standing and when she goes through the motions of swinging the pickaxe like the other workers do she looks horrified and in pain as if her body is doing it against her will. Each time the workers make the chinking sound with her teeth she sinks lower and lower to the floor
-during the chant reprise all of the workers stood up whenever Orpheus speaks but they dropped back down to the floor whenever Hades spoke. There was also a point in which all of the stage lights got brighter and brighter until they eventually all went out at the same time when Hades yelled "I conduct the electric city!" it was really fucking cool
-during how long whenever Persephone is singing the lights were blue and whenever Hades sang the lights were red and when they were singing In Harmony towards the end of the red and blue lights turned on
-during epic 3 the workers fully regain themselves and they started to take off their work equipment as they sang. When the workers chimed in during the lalala's Hades quickly ran towards them and then made a slashing sign at his throat telling them to cut it out because part of him refused to hear the song that he forgot. But when he finally did hear it and he started to sing it Persephone was obviously overjoyed and she finally made the motion to reach out to him first.
- after Hades grew the flower when singing the la la Persephone put it in his front pocket on his vest. I forgot the name for it but it was still super cute. Also during the "And they danced"scene Persephone started to twirl Hades But realize that he was too tall so instead they did a shimmy. This version of Persephone was a very chaotic in one the best ways and she always had a lot of energy except for when she was around Hades however she regains her energetic dancing style around him after they make up during this scene.
-during his kiss the riot when Hades was lamenting what to he dramatically approached Orpheus and eurydice, and Orpheus tried to protect them by using his guitar as a shield. There is also a point in which Hades tried to walk away to clear his head but he backed up when the fates stopped him emphasizing that he had to make the choice now.
- during wait for me reprise Hades is still deeply annoyed by Orpheus and he takes his pic out of his hand and flings it across the stage just to be Petty.
-during doubt comes in whenever Orpheus would sing the lalala's the fates had lanterns that would light and then fade out in the beginning and then eventually they wouldn't light at all showing Orpheus losing hope.
-during the road to hell reprise when Hermies said "spring had come again" eurydice pulled the flower out of her pocket this time without Orpheus giving it to her.
