Be My Valentine: "I know all your weaknesses!"
Bjorn never thought the day would come, but here they were.
“What are you looking at?” A disgruntled Askeladd stared him down, his expression stern but not dismissive. They’ve been drinking, and while the older man held his liquor well, even he had his limits. His cheeks were the barest of pink- the only indication he was tipsy. “Out with it, Bjorn!”
“You’ve had a bit to drink, eh boss? Sure you shouldn’t slow down?” The comment got him a glare and a scuff, disappearing behind a wooden mug as he took the last swig of his wine.
“I’m fine. I’m no weakling when it comes to..to..” He blinked a few times, glaring down at his mug. “What is this again?”
“You’re done.” Bjorn stood, wrestling the mug out of his hand despite the other man’s grasp with surprisingly little difficulty. “Come on- time for bed.”
“What are you, my nan? I don’t need to be tucked in.” Askeladd batted his hands away, standing up for maximum intimidation factor. This immediately plummeted when he nearly fell over- saved only by Bjorn’s quick reflexes. “Let me go, I can walk by myself!”
“Boss, with all due respect- you can’t.” Bjorn resisted the urge to sigh. It was a level of trust only he earned with Askeladd to witness him in such a state. He felt both honored and mildly exhausted. “Let me help you to bed.”
“I told you already, I’m no weakling when it comes to my drinks!” Prideful as ever, Askeladd began a wobbly stumble towards the rooms. Only it was in the other direction and he nearly walked through a window instead. Bjorn once again grabbed him to steady him. “Why are you here so fast? You holding out on me?”
“Face it, ‘Ladd. You’re drunk. Don’t lie to me- I know all your weaknesses.” Desperate times called for desperate measures. With an arm around the blonde, he pressed his fingers into his ribs sharply. “Time to sober up!”
“Gah! S-Shit, dohohon’t!” Gritting his teeth, Askeladd immediately went to shove him away, but either Bjorn was too strong or he was too drunk; he had no strength in his arms. “Bjohorn, you soohhn of a-”
“Yes, yes. Heard it all, ‘Ladd.” Bjorn chuckled as he made his way towards their shared bed, clawing into his side the entire time. Another rare privilege, getting to tickle the older man. If he were being honest, it was the only way to get him listening in this state. “Come on, bed time.”
“Iihihi tohohold you- I’m nohoohoho brahahhat! Geahha, gehheehhet yooohohur hand-AH!” With a light shove, he was pushed into the cot, slightly dazed at impact. Askeladd opened his mouth to snarl, but the second his face touched the pillow his drunken eyes grew heavy. “I…hm..what was I saying?”
“Don’t worry about it.” Bjorn barely held down a laugh as he watched the older man doze off, low snores rumbling from his throat. He wouldn’t remember any of this by morning. Nor would he likely remember the gentle kiss Bjorn pressed into his whiskery face. “Night, boss.”
I snore was the only response he got in return.

revolutionary girl utena – heavy breathing panting crying what a fucking roller coaster nanami the child you are anty the child you were utena the child you choose to be – just one of the true masterpieces of all anime. took a few episodes to realize that this show understood tone and comedy perfectly and wasn’t just a wonky children’s show and by golly! the nanami in season 3 gutted me unlike anything else
attack on titan: final season (for real this time) – decent conclusion to maybe my favorite anime of all time

school rumble – so goddamn funny and i cared about every goddamn character. it’s witchcraft!
trigun – good ole saturday morning cartoons
golden kamuy s3 – how does it keep getting better???!?!
fruits basket – i was a certified hater after s1, but slowly but surely i gave into the melodrama. akito and shigure were EVERYTHING
nana – the most disappointing ending of all time! for one of the greatest anime of all time. manga pls save me!!!
rascal does not dream of bunny girl senpai – i’m embarrassed. i cried.
princess tutu – expressionistic, dedicated to storytelling, tremendously kind-hearted. you have to let it move you
blue lock – i’m officially a sports anime girlie
cyberpunk: edgerunners – this was just so slick!
chainsaw man – nothing needs to be said here

yamada-kun to lv999 no koi wo suru – adult romance that hasn’t been stripped of all conflict and maintains momentum nearly to the end
oshi no ko – my expectations were non-existent after ep 1 but then it crept up on me. i can’t even fully put my finger on what works so well? but it does! it knows when to take itself seriously and when to be nonsense.
demon slayer s3 – best season of demon slayer to date, i actually cared
durarara!!x2 shou – this is a confession. my inner edgy teen loves durarara. i appreciate huge casts of characters acting in opposition in atmospheric tokyo.
gintama – i finally finished gintama one of my favorites of all time. the end pulls all the threads together but it does so at the expense of the laughs so loses some points
chihayafuru – amazing background anime. just consistently fun and engaging.
perfect blue – i feel stupid and uncultured to not give this a 10
vinland saga – askeladd is so hot wow

buddy daddies – funny and sincere in degrees but a truly annoying little girl character
serial experiments lain – god you’ve gotta appreciate the wild swings creatives were taking in the 90s
durarara!!x2 ten
great teacher onizuka – ugh he’s a creep but also heh he’s funny
trigun stampede – they yassified them!
mob psycho 100 s3 - meandered a bit but the characters are forever favorites
to your eternity – the first 3 arcs are extraordinary. march is one of the great child characters of all time. the end drags.

zom 100 – crazy good first episode that earns its premise and then a slow descent into mediocrity; cool colors though!
terror in resonance – utterly forgettable
dororo – way too long with way too many hit or miss episode arcs
bungou stray dogs s4 – the cracks are showing but the rampo backstory is dope
lycoris recoil – those cute girls shoulda been lesbians
classroom of the elite – is it edgy? yes. are the quotes frustratingly misused? oh yes. is it fun? ugh yeah actually
romantic killer – pretty cute and the edge of danger at the end really sells it
free – solid watch but it left my brain like sand in a sieve

wolf’s rain – what passes as deep when children are your primary audience
hell’s paradise – boring and i liked the manga so.
durarara!!x2 ketsu – the conclusion falls short
land of the lustrous – bold but was too slow for me

tomo-chan is a girl! – sometimes funny but the conceit does not justify 13 episodes and it loses steam fast
mushishi – some of the vignettes were beautiful but felt repetitive
bleach: thousand-year blood war – sleek, hype, plagued by all the old bleach problems
no game no life season 1 - confused that this was such a phenomenon when it came out. it’s fine i guess.

kamisama kiss – trite imo
given – god save us from anime about perfect people being perfect with each other – but this time set to music!
tokyo revengers s2 – 🤷
natsume’s book of friends – i don’t need vibes this cozy

Hullo, dropping by to my norwegian mutual bcus I'm in need of some expertise; I'm planning on changing one of my characters from japanese to norwegian once I get to his revamp (tryna lessen the excessive manga inspiration with my characters lol) and I am in need for suggestions for good male norwegian names for him. I gathered up some options, but wanted to ask you for ideas too :D
He's a countryside himbo who loves to cook, fish, likes penguins and would love to see them in nature someday, and carves wooden animals and paints them. Also his bf is a japanese witchboy from alternate world (Konjou, tho he goes by Clover now due to story reasons. Idk if you remember my Thorn Boy, im talking about his BF Jinchou lol)
He's basically the 'Just Some Guy' of this story, where majority of others are some mythical beings. I always felt that was his true calling over the overdramatic stuff his old story has lol
So yeah, any suggestions would be helpful if you got any!

Omg I'm so passionate about names you have no idea, this is so exciting! When it comes to Norwegian guy names a safe bet will always be a biblical name (think David, Simon, Thomas, Jonas, Daniel, Isaac, Jacob etc.), It's a guarantee that it'll be a believable "just some guy" name, but it also doesn't stand out that much as specifically Norwegian lol.
When it comes to the actual norse names (and norwegian forms of latin or greek names for that matter) there's a fine line between grandpa, 18th century priest, and what a normal dude in his 20s would be called. I think the line differs a bit from person to person, but usually the modern forms of the mythological names work well! Like Odin, Brage, Brede, Sindre, Trym, Sigmund and Sigurd are names of the top of my head stand out a bit, but would also fit a "just some guy" type as well haha. Tor is an old guy name in my head tho, not that it wouldn't work but I'd like to point out how weird it is that Odin isn't an old guy name? I know like three people my age named Odin (one of them had a friend named Ravn of all things). Loke is a horse name. Don't pick Loke.
Other than that we have Håvard, Øyvind/Eivind, and Espen (Espen Askeladd is the main character in pretty much every Norwegian fairytale btw, he's the guy who's not really special or anything but he comes out on top due to his wits and smarts so that's a pretty good one imo). I could obviously just continue with every name ever from here, but honestly I think it'll work no matter what you land on in the end!
I'm a bit patriotic rn cause yknow, 17. May and all lol, but I think the ones I've listed are pretty good, I'd especially say the more norse ones fit very well if the character's an outdoorsy type. That being said, Emil is a great name! The perfect "just some guy" name, I'd totally understand if you choose it cause it's a really great one that only the smartest and coolest people pick😌

I read a few more chapters of Vinland Saga (decided to stop at ch 100 for now) and I simply continue to love it.
The moment I start doubting the writing, it pulls me right back in.
The encounter between Canute and Thorfinn was just about perfect.
Thorfinn as the non-conformist during his age and Canute as one of the powerful monarchs of his age.
I love how Vinland Saga leans on social history and how it understands the daily reality of the age, even if the story is so strongly dramatised and fused with fictional material.
The medieval king's (here during the transition from the Dark Ages to Early Middle Ages) power is absolute, predicated on the idea of the divine right (here probably in its most earliest form) – the idea that the king is the representative of the Christian god on Earth and his is the god-given right to rule.
(There is a bunch to be said about this re: Canute's arc in relation to his faith, I think, which I might elaborate on in some other post.)
And everyone around him acts accordingly.
I loved this detail in the meeting where Askeladd killed the previous king, too.
And Vinland Saga is full of awareness of the social state of the age it talks about.
From the wise but hypocritical priest who travels with Askeladd's group for a while, to the village Askeladd's group slaughters and the daily reality of the innocent family we see the point of view of prior to their slaughter.
The battlefields stink, pillaging and slave-keeping are common customs.
The world a thousand years ago is tens of times worse for women.
I talked about the story's writing of women in my previous post about Vinland Saga and I've been thinking about it a bunch since, actually.
How Vinland Saga writes women is not much different from most fiction (especially stories written by men), but I've noticed stories written for adults at least have a bigger willingness to explore the social status of women and the realities of living as a woman.
And women's lives being a struggle is doubly true for slaves in the age where Vinland Saga takes place. So the horrid reality Arnheid experienced (or even the noble woman-turned-slave at the start of the story we saw) was not too uncommon for those of her status.
It is very true that the story of travelling to Vinland is (mostly) the story of men like many stories of earlier ages (archeological finds show a pretty clear gender role divide), but it's also true that women in the Viking society were much better off than in any other of the age. They could own property, engage in trade and demand divorce, for a few examples. Nor were women exempt from being warriors.
And although Thorfinn's mother Helga and Ylva had a few neat scenes, I wish we'd see these aspects a little bit more.
I think I've felt so strongly whenever the story addresses how women are treated because even if it isn't much different from your common dark fantasy story where female characters show up rarely and far between the male characters and are there to make the guy characters sad, be written out, have their children or be tragic victims, it is at least willing to address the reality of women's lives with empathy.
I've thought about this in relation to another Seinen manga, Berserk, a bunch too and I find the why of a female audience (which includes myself!) taking a liking to these stories something fascinating to think about.
Although both series are often very excessive with all forms of violence, they are also empathic towards women's struggles and suffering.
I think this is why Arnheid ultimately did hit me and why I empathise with Casca and her journey of recovery, too.
I think the reason these stories have gained a female audience at all despite their flaws is because women see bits of their own suffering and struggles in these fictional women because, in the end, the intention matters the most.
Casca is nothing but a mute plot item for a lot of Berserk, but the story is empathic towards what happened to her and also introduces other complex women besides her into the story.
Berserk is super excessive with its sexual content especially, but at least, it, for the most part, not only pulls back on it as the story goes on, but also explores it with some substance.
And although a 100 chapters in, you can count the number of female characters present in Vinland Saga on a single hand, it does give a voice to the struggles and position of women of that time.
I thought Arnheid was really well written in that sense, at least.
I only recently realised the significance of the distinction between exploring women's position and struggles in society vs. writing women well in a more general sense.
(I think it might be Utena rubbing off on my brain, having also finished it pretty recently.)
And I often see the former branded as sexist writing (and I think it can be), but I've grown to very much think it can be valuable in its own way.
(All you have to do is make it complex/give women a variety of struggles, which I think Vinland Saga does pretty badly and Berserk gets better at as it goes on.)
I like stories that make me think about this stuff.

I sigh and look at my letter again, I fold it and save it in my bag. As far as we stay here I can't relive in my feelings even if I want, I have to stay still and be ready for the battle even if I'm just a shoemaker.
I wish I could take you with me, runaway to your dreamed Vinland and marry you to live a peaceful life. You don't deserve this hell.

Hi....If you don't mind, can I ask, what are your top 10 (or top 7) favorite media (can be books/ manga/ anime/movies/tv series)? Why do you love them? Sorry if you've answered this question before......Thanks....
no need to apologize! this is a great question, thank you for asking! i think i'll go with anime just 'cause it's easiest (i have a MAL and rank every series i watch from 1-10). i originally had movies in here but i think i'm gonna cut them out and just keep it to series and ovas. and "why do you love them" is an AWESOME question I never get! i don't know if i'll be able to explain myself well, but I'll try!
fullmetal alchemist ('03). why? this was pretty much my gateway anime. it's been over 10 years I believe since I've last seen any of it, so it's entirely possible that my opinion has since changed. but i definitely have nostalgia goggles on for it, and i know it is actually good, too haha
2. natsume yuujinchou (specifically seasons 6, 5, 4, and 3). why? some seasons of natsume i have rated higher than others, apparently. natsume is a special show. due to the nature of how long it is, there is the drawback that sometimes it feels like it repeats itself and tells similar stories. but even then it is just such a good story of found family and finding love after a life of strife, and it's just. very good. (i do think it should end soon though before it feels like it's just recycling old stories)
3. made in abyss. why? season 1 still stands out to me above the movie and 2. it was such a special experience. the art, the animation, the background art, the music, it all comes together to create such a fascinating world. the weak point would definitely be its characters, but even then everything else comes together so well that it doesn't really matter. it has one of the best first episodes of any anime (when the sun came up over orth and the music cued in I knew I was hooked) and I also adore season 1's ending; if the show never got a continuation, it could have ended right there and I would have been content (not a lot of other anime can say the same about their endings!).
4. steins; gate. why? it's also been a very long time since i've seen this one, so possible my opinion has changed. still, I remember being super interested after the first episode, and the following 12 that people tend to critique as being "slow" or a "slog" never really felt that way for me. there was always something fun and interesting going on. i compare this one with link click a lot, just because people tend to go the magica route and i firmly believe steins;gate is the better time travel show (though lc isn't over yet so maybe an unfair comparison. still it'd take a LOT for lc to reach anywhere near the heights of steins;gate to me). when okabe goes back over and over to try and save mayuri, i just remember being absolutely floored. really good stuff.
5. vinald saga. why? it's just such a well constructed story. and the author's comments about not wanting a world with war is so interesting, given how violent the first season is. it's really interesting to watch thorfinn grow and change (and i never understood the hate that he was too violent or annoying or a brat? he's just a kid who's lost everything, cut him some slack jeez). i love the last shot of season 1, corny as it is-- all the memories reflected on the dropping knife was great. and askeladd was one of the best villains i've ever seen. he's not even ~morally grey~ or anything; he's pretty strongly in the wrong, but his thinking and motivations and everything are so interesting and compelling. i don't think it's perfect; there are flaws for sure (i wasn't the biggest fan of how in s2 canute just. decides to turn his ships back after a small conversation with thorfinn lol) but it is very good.
6. this boy cuaght a merman. why? ok this one objectively does not deserve a 10. it's a 30minute ova about a boy falling in love with a merman. that's it. it's not incredible or amazing or ground breaking. buuuuuut it's my favorite soubi yamamoto ova and i adore soubi yamamoto and so she's getting a place on this list. she is responsible for animating, storyboarding, backgrounds, directing, etc etc everything in here, it's incredible (and she was only like 25, or something when she did it. fucking bananas). i love her please go check out her works (besides crystallization)
7. noragami. why? ok again probably not objectively THAT good, but this is one of the first anime that got me to read the manga, and here I am some 10 years later (ok a little less than 10 years because I didn't start reading the manga the year it started publishing, I think). noragami's MANGA is incredible and amazing and wonderful. but I do believe (much against the popular opinion amongst noragami manga readers) that the anime is also amazing, and YES that includes season 1. the crew behind it really loved the manga I feel (at least the director did, and there's proof for that) and adapted it faithfully and well. noragami is a story of found family and of turning your life and fate around, and it's very good.
8. she and her cat: everything flows. why? this one is only 4 episodes, 8 minutes each. it tells a story of a 20-something (actually she's still in college iirc) who lives on her own with her cat, and is trying to be an adult. but it's told from the cat's perspective. it's so sweet; the cat comments on how she "grooms herself" (brushes her hair, puts on her interview clothes) and "looks pretty" and things and it is just so great. i love the line (not a direct quote) "she opens that heavy door again today and heads out. on the other side of that door is a somewhat unforgiving, somewhat cruel world. but she's doing her best to learn to love that world. and i love her for that." just....so good (also the show made me cry)
9. yuru camp. why? second iyashikei on this list! SOL/iyashikei is actually my favorite genre of anime, generally speaking, but it can be hard to do it well. yuru camp ABSOLUTELY does it well. i read a commentary once ages ago, about how one of the great things about yuru camp is that the girls are allowed to just... be girls, and it always stuck with me. there's no fanservice, and these girls really feel like real characters who exist. there was another commentary (maybe same one?) about how rin is this introverted, more lonesome character, but she enjoys the solitude. but what's cool about yuru camp is she is never forced to change or become more extroverted; her friends accept her for who she is, nadeshiko will invite her out but not push her, and then sometimes she does go out! and she changes and becomes a bit more social, but never gives up solo camping. AND the more extroverted, outgoing character INSTEAD comes to embrace solo camping! what a cool idea, executed amazingly! so the characters are a strong point here, but the banter and camping is a lot of fun too. i still haven't watched the movie, but i'll get there eventually!
10. odd taxi. why? this one is 100% on the writing. it is so clever and quick-witted, it's a ton of fun to watch. i've never watched any other anime like it. the mystery/thriller aspects are a lot of fun too, and i remember reading reddit threads and theories on this one as it was airing. what was so cool is that they plant subtle hints that you can ABSOLUTELY catch if you have sharp eyes (i likely wouldn't have if it weren't for reading others' theories) and you can know things before characters do. lot of fun.

Ahh, bad-ass Thorfinn reappears! Reading the first five chapters of “War in the Baltic”, and I take back all my stated fears of “Vinland Saga” delving into the realm on easy solutions. I worried after the culmination of the confrontation with Canute that all of Thorfinn’s encounters would be similarly, easily resolved, but boy was I wrong. I should have known better, given the pedigree of story telling from Yukimura through the vast majority of this series.
Hild’s presence with Thorfinn and his party continues to be a wonderful parallel, with her tagging along and, unconsciously I think, she’s helped already multiple times to protect Throfinn’s life, the same way Thorfinn did for Askeladd, under the belief that they were doing so because it had to be them who delivered the killing blow. We again see Thorfinn in Askeladd’s own position, with Hild snapping at him that she doesn’t take orders from him, the same way Thorfinn often snapped at Askeladd. Thorfinn, though, unlike Askeladd, views himself as beholden to Hild and is willing to give up his life to her without struggle once he’s made amends for his past killing.
The highlight of these chapters is definitely just watching Thorfinn kick ass though. It’s been a long time since we really got to see him unload his abilities on anyone, and I was happy to see he still has some of his old fight and spirit left in him. That’s a part of him, his ability and talent to fight, an essential part, I would say, and while I understand he’s felt a need for self-sacrifice for the past, five years, born largely from his sense of guilt and remorse, I really love to see him regain some of his old spark and start to value his life more, to fight and defend himself more, and not just stand there and let himself be killed, or beaten. I like seeing Thorfinn regain some self-respect. That’s growth too. To forgive himself enough to fight for himself. And though I don’t think he’s quite there yet, to the point of valuing his own life enough to fight for it (his continued statement that he’ll let Hild kill him once he’s made amends proof of that), I hope to see him get there. He’s a good person, and doesn’t deserve to die, or even be mistreated. Of course, Thorfinn was really fighting here to protect the villagers, which was amazing to see too, and amazing character development. To see this kid who went from aiding the raid’s of Askeladd’s band on villages, to now saving villages which are under attack, is pretty incredible. The little girl calling Thorfinn a “good guy” and cheering him on to save them all was incredibly heartwarming.
This brings up another parallel, this one with his father, Thors. Even as Thorfinn comes out into the open and abandons his escape plans from the Jomsvikings to save the villagers from them, he only has to do so in the first place because his presence on the island is what drew them there. Just like Thor’s attempt to escape his past as a warrior brought him to Iceland, which eventually lead Floki to the island, and put the lives of the villagers there under threat, along with everything that transpired after, with Thorfinn himself being swept up into a life of battle and violence, it’s now Thorfinn who, in his attempt to escape his life as a warrior, is being followed and pursued by that past. That it’s Floki again who is chasing after him and not allowing him the life of peace he seeks makes the parallel with Thors all the greater. The scene with the little girl running up to Thorfinn and trying to give him the seashell necklace, only for her mother to pull her away and cower in fear before Thorfinn, was heartbreaking. Thorfinn, just like his father, is a genuinely good and kind man, but his life of violence continues to haunt him and continually tries to pull him back, again, the same as Thors.
I’m super excited to continue on now, and see what takes place. With the request from the two warriors from Vagn’s group to join them in overthrowing Flokie, and them insisting to Thorfinn that he can’t live among the sheep, because he has wolf’s blood running through his veins, and with that seemingly being true, as everywhere he goes, violence and confrontation follows after him, on top of the looming possibility of Thorfinn finding out that Floki was, ultimately, the one really responsible for Thor’s death, things are obviously far from seeing any easy solutions. I’m super stoked!

Ok, soooo! I decided to go back to talking about vinland saga every once in a while when I feel like it because I honestly missed it but also I think for the time being I will only talk about prologue arc that has been adapted and maybe reference something that might happen in the future. I feel like there are a lot of powerful scenes I can talk about and some opinions I have of certain things that I think there are a lot of polarised views on. But let's start again by of course talking about the first chapter!! Actually when I started reading vinland saga manga I already watched majority of season one so I rushed through the first 40ish chapters because I was sooo excited to see what comes next. But now I'm happy to get back to them and see how it all went here. I kind of accepted anime beginning as canon because that's the way I got introduced to the story but I can say Yukimura's approach is also very interesting. I think I will have to stick to supporting anime creators decision to start prologue from when Thorfinn was a child because I think it adds to certain element of surprise. Obviously I think the first opening spoils a lot and pretty much tells you what kind of protagonist Thorfinn will become but it still leaves you in some suspense. Also, though I think it's pretty clear Thors will die if you pay any attention, I like that in anime it is still a bit of a shock. Not to say that in the manga it isn't, maybe even knowing he will die makes you more hyper-aware of everything that happens with him and around him.
But from the writing perspective I find this chapter great. It has action aspect, it immediately shows you vikings and how they used to fight, it gives you compelling characters like Askeladd and Thorfinn and whole mystery surrounding them and why are they here, it has some humours moments and also shows you the brutality of war. If you are writing something and the future of your story depends on those first chapters, will they grasp the audience, than I think this is something that definitely attracts.
Last thing, I hope someone agrees with me hahaha buuuut... Manga Thorfinn >>>> anime Thorfinn and Anime Askeladd >>>>> manga Askeladd (this is in regards to their looks hahaha). I feel like they really made Askeladd better looking than he is, and Thorfinn is still great in anime but in manga he definitely has morenof that 💫💫pretty boy💫💫 look. Anyways that's all for today, I'm sooo happy to talk about this again, I stalk tumblr religiously for your posts about vinland and love them all❤️❤️❤️❤️ maybe this isn't the biggest anime/manga community on here but it sure has a great quality to it

He has this old compass that was gifted to him from his grandpa and a family picture with his parents and him as a child (he keeps it in a slim box to not wear it down more than it already is)
51. What were some inspirations for your character (people, movies, games)?
I have to be honest, there's no *real* inspo :( I remember making him blonde bc it's a haircolor I rarely saw on men in rdo. Then my brain went "i like traveling to Sweden. Let's make him swedish" for teh lulz, to use this ancient proverb. He ended up as half a swede; his (then teenaged) dad & grandparents immigrating to the US which was a weirdly good fit for the timeline in rdr (with the most swedes immigrating in the 1860s) but i only discovered that later :'D I also haven't had finished the main story by then because if I had known there was a lil norwegian settling in tall trees I would've used this to my character creating advances!
Lloyd's character and traits got defined by how I play in rdo, that he's rather picking flowers than picking fights, pretty defensive. I will also join you in the cringe club, as I gave him a lot of myself, too (the love for cats, reading, and a good joke, defensiveness, immense self doubt to just name some). Lloyd just has wayyy more backbone than I do lol.
I don't remover how I came up with picking his first name, but for his last name I pulled up a list of swedish surnames and found an alliteration to be quite funny. Did I ever mention his last name here?? It's Lindström. Ha ha
When I posted a comic with him on reddit, some commented saying he looks like Askeladd from the Vinland Saga anime and one guy said, like the air fighter ace from Blackadder Marches Forth. I saw neither, had to google both, there are some resemblances and I got a good laugh from it hehe.

The blonde tries to conceal the blushes and smiles you produce on him, after all he is here to defeat Askeladd not to play around with some random warrior.
However, as time passes by, he warms up to you. Soon, you become the only one who actually holds real, lasting conversations with him. Thorfinn practically drags you to training sessions -he’d never spar with you, of course- as well as he always got to eat dinner with you.
You became the greatest of friends.
Just as he hardened his expressions under that bitter frown of his, Thorfinn hid other feelings.
A seething, furious jealousy when you’d talk with the rest of Askeladd’s soldiers or the freezing fear he’d experience when you headed into battle.
At one point, when you had unfortunately been stabbed on your lower abdomen, Thorfinn snapped. You were not the unfortunate one, -in this one occasion at least- no; the man holding the spear was.
Merciless, the blonde pierced his chest hundreds of times before slicing his head off in a single, bloody motion.
The look on the blonde’s dark eyes. The roar chanted with rage.
You were absolutely terrified.
From that moment on, the young warrior would never let you out of his range.
No more fighting for you
No engaging with others for you.
Whenever you complained, he answered “It’s for your sake, [Y/N]”.

The blonde man craved them all to be his own. Like any human’s natural curse, Askeladd was greedy.

A vile, treacherous desire to keep you . And every warrior under his lead knew what Askeladd “wants” is what Askeladd “gets”.
There was no trouble, no hesitance or resistance from his soldiers when he gave the command.
Once Askeladd’s lips parted to forsaken you from his men.

Bjorn:
He is a horror-striking man.
His tall, broad build and stern face can manage to intimidate anyone who stands in his way. The path to you of course.
The brunette is also extremely loyal to those he comes to respect. However, this blessing -if you could call it as favoring as that- is for a few.
Askeladd held a special place in his heart, to Bjorn; the blonde was an amazing leader as well as a great friend although he did not reckon much about his background.
Then Thorfinn, well, he admired him in some sort of way. The child was no longer a weak brat but a strong and mature self-built man. (In his opinion, it was a pity he was stuck in revenge)
Finally, you came along- a whole different, extraordinary case.
Baldur, Freyja, Frigg and Gersemi must have adored him in order to tie the knots of your destinies.
Or they must have loathed you with the contents of their all powerful, twisted beings for they have mocked you; spat with venom into your fate.
Yet no matter your say, not even the will of the gods; Bjorn will have you by his side.
The bearded man was also rather cold. He really is not the most verbally emotional of these madmen.
Nonetheless, he is communicative through actions. Holding your hand, cuddling your frame, running his calloused hand through the strands of your shiny, [h/l] [h/c] hair.
It is a surprise, indeed, unexpected from someone so rough and brute.
From a man who at the same, bites at your neck ‘till pecks of crimson form. The same palms which caress your smooth hair; pull, push and grasp your skin with faint consideration of the horrid, purple and yellowish spots.
A two-faced passion.
You wonder... how much he relishes in your tears, how much he enjoys your laughs.
Which he loves the most.
But Bjorn cannot choose for he treasures you the most.
Hence, as any vile greedy human whose dirty hands lay on something so, so divine and unique; he hides you from others.
Oh the toll the damn tent takes on you.
Gods aid any unfortunate soul who looks at you, as it might as well as be their doom. More cruel and less merciful will it be if they break as much as a single nail of yours.

The prince is very reserved.
Only opening up to a handful of people, between them; Ragnar.
He was the one who raised him, the father he never had.

A servant’s child, who shared the same locking-fate as their parents.
Due to the small age difference and because of the unnerving times; ever since youth you’ve been entrusted, under Ragnar’s eye, to take care of the Prince.
Whilst you did not bare a sword in his name, raise a shield for him nor ride in his honor, you took a more domestic task. Feeding, bathing, looking over him.
You were one of the scarce in terms of loyal company, and due to your gentle nature, you two became friends.
It was polemic, and it spiked as you two grew.
Even so, the Prince never left your side. No matter how many times his father beat him. Although you warned him for his safety and reputation. Still and all when Ragnar would scold him.
Eventually, people learnt to pay no mind as Canute did not speak to you; at all.
They, however, could not see the way he stared at you.
His irises widening as if they just witnessed a miracle- an angel.
Each night he checked on you, sneaking into the servant house to watch over your sleeping self.
Before he dozed on his own, Canute prayed.
It is a catholic custom, a traditional rule.
Be that as it may, the blonde prince prays for you. He begs to the Lord for your safety and he is grateful. He expresses his thanks to the Father for allowing him to bask in your holy presence. Asking Him for another day in which he may indulge in your loyal company.

He is the worst of mad men, truly, a nightmare in the flesh and bones.
Although the spiky blonde is a jolly man with a bubbly personality, he has a far darker side.
A complete battle maniac. Not thirsty for blood, but lusting for honor and glory.
Thorkell seeks battles as a compass’ needles search for North. Anywhere a battle emerges, the viking follows suit. Always drawing his weapons and spilling blood in the name of Valhalla.
He had never been interested in settling down with a cozy family, or manage a village as chief as many of his peers. Thorkell could not find the fun in it.
Until you happened.
In the midst of battle, an elegant white mare charged and stomped over his soldiers as weak flowers over a blood-stained field.
Yet his eyes were set on you, the rider of the proud stallion.
Long, braided [h/c] hair swayed with the winds grazing the battle. Deep, blue markings which accentuate your features. An armor of thick leathers with silver chains that wrapped nicely at your chest, shoulders and forearms. Tight leather pants dressed you and a long, navy skirt opened at the front; adding the touch of fierce femininity.
You were holding a polished iron sword that shined red with its blood. A light-blue shield with darker carvings, resembling the crest -of what he assumed- your village.
A soldier of his charged without hesitation, only to be stopped by Thorkell. His large hand clasped down on the soldier’s shoulder, threatening to crush it; obliterate the bone into toothpicks. He managed to dislocate it.
“She is mine”, the spiky blonde affirmed. Excitement rushed through his veins and he dashed to you as he sliced down anyone who stood in his way.
Finally, he stood face-to-face. Although he had to look downwards due to his colossal height, casting a looming shadow over your tinier frame.
Trepidation crawled from your toes and feet to your ears, gluing your stance to the ground.
Teeth; white and luminescent in an organized row, grinning mischievously down upon you.
No words exchanged, no breaths huffed.
A heated battle sparked.
A fight of strength against agility, build versus speed.
You were petite compared to him- and that seemed so cute to him- so you aimed at the lower vital spots. Trying to immobilize his legs by slashing open eyes, yet he did not give you a second to do so.
An all coming, non-stop series of attacks with his dual axes.
The man was unbelievable. Sure, the title “Thorkell the Tall” leaves to imagination the description of a giant. Nonetheless, never had this monster crossed your mind.
A complete berserker, his stamina seemed infinite. And his resistance? Beyond the gods’ explanation.
No matter how much you cut him, he never fell.
All it took was a hit on your side - struck with his axe dull part - which certainly broke some ribs and sent you flying towards a tree. Your back crashed against the oak’s trunk and oxygen was knocked out of you. (Mind that you used your shield to block his move. )
Heavy footfalls on the snow crunched to your location.
The blonde lowered himself to your level, almost eyeing you with pity.
He slided his hand through the snow and hooked his arm around your waist.
Curious, brown orbs burned through your hazed [e/c] ones.
Even in defeat, your beauty remain unrivaled by a valkyrie.
“I was never one to claim rewards after a fight,” he confessed “y’know- glory and honor, and a good loot for my soldiers- is all I ever fiested of.” Thorkell brought you closer to his face and conditioned your sight onto his.
A darker glimmer in them shook the pain away.
“Now, I think I will claim something more”.

could i please request a scenario/imagine where askeladd had a daughter but he left her and her mother. Then she grows up and has a family of her own in a village. But then the village gets raided by askeladd's band and he manages to recognise her, however its too late.
I had time to rewrite it several times. I really liked this idea but it was hard. But I love challenges. Enjoy ♥️
“ So you decide to leave us that cowardly, Askeladd? You are the lord, the noble man after all, but why aren’t you able to farewell with your own daughter?”
The woman sobbed quietly, doing her best to sound calm, but she failed with each word spoken. Young Askeladd glanced at her, nothing trembled in his heart at that moment, when he failed to leave the home noiselessly. He has already her, his wife, he had been planning to leave Wales. The new life of a wealthy, noble man wasn’t his cup of tea. Neither the peaceful life was something the dream of his life.
He looked at his wife again. She was the most beautiful Welsh woman to imagine, but to him, to Askeladd, she was the ice: she would never understand him.
“ I leave the most of our possessions to you and our daughter, see?”
The woman turned red. He is wealthy enough, handsome enough. She put up with his multiple treasons and neglect. But this is the last straw.
“ But you leave us, she wakes up and what should I say to her? She is just 4. What should I do? You took the idea of the new life in your head, but you are thinking of yourself, what about Hefin? Wha-“
He came closely to her and covered her mouth with his hand.
“ Woman, you wake her up. We have been discussing this again and over again for many months. I have warned you, and you still pretend I didnt tell you wh-“
The little girl interrupted the escalated conflict as she showed up from the room she was sleeping in. She looked pretty like her father: lean, with messy wide eyebrows at the ends and with beautiful wheat-like hair. She raised her eyes at him, how drowsy and confused she looked. The heart of the man shrank in seconds when she hugged his leg. Hefin was surely devoted to her father.
“ Dad..? Mommy? What is the noise about?..»
Askeladd squatted to her and looked at her eyes. That’s why he wanted to leave without a notice. He was a cunning man but disarmed in front of those innocent grey eyes.
“ I will have to leave, Hefin. It is really important, do you understand how important it is?”
He poked her little nose and she knitted her brows, but her dissatisfaction changed to a great worrying.
“But when do you come back, Dad? Will you bring me a doll?..”
He laughed, but his voice was crowned with a sad tone.
“ I will have to be out for a while. But I will return and you see me again, Hefin.”
“ Do you promise me?”
“ I do”
He gave a kiss on her forehead, then he stood up, and glanced at his wife. She didn’t want him to substitute his noble, wealthy life for piracy. But the more he stayed here, the more he felt stressed.
“ Woman, take care of her. You have now all I have got.
Askeladd took his goods he had collected in his bag. When he stepped out the house, the little girl sobbed violently, embracing the mother’s legs. She knows her father will never come back. The mother rubbed down her face and hugged the one now she had left with.
” Mom, i wish my father would invite my wedding... This is not fair”
“Fair or not, he did his choice almost 12 years ago and didn’t hesitate when you had woken up. Don’t expect the miracle.”
The woman fixed her daughter’s bridal veil. The woman’s face was painted with new deep wrinkles - she aged rapidly and her beauty faded with time. The girl, who just turned 16, was sparkling from excitement, but the words of her mother sheathed like a dagger inside her heart. After several minutes she will get out of her home, get wedded to the man her mother chose for her, and leave the home.
The time has passed, it seemed like Hefin, the little girl who grew into a nice lady, had forgotten about her scampish father. But she didn’t. She missed him a lot. She didn’t know he had become a pirate, she thought she was just a bad daughter, so he left her and her mother because he was tired of her.
„ Mother, I know he has a new life to live, but I would be glad to see him once“
The woman nodded and kissed the girl‘s forehead. The time has come.
The splitting pain pierced the woman‘s chest as she fainted and fell on the wooden floor. A spear, or a dagger, or a sword has run through her - she didn’t recognize who or what happened as she had heard screams outside her house. She saw nor her husband, neither her little son who went with his father to plow up the soil. She just opened the door and was attacked. She closed her eyes as she heard the footsteps near her. But she heard how some men who were rubbing the house. At least they didn’t notice her breathing, at least she could live for more minutes.
„ Darn, this English whore has so much silver necklaces. Askeladd will be glad.“
The footsteps and male husky mumbles disappeared. She was alone, on the floor, bleeding, still alive, but on the verge of death. But she had enough power to shed tears from the immense grief. And again, new footsteps coming. She froze in horror, this is the end.
„ Hefin.. is this you?“ the man, whose face was covered with deep wrinkles, came into the house and gazed in shock at his dying daughter. If she stood up and looked at him, she would recognize him. His voice was enough for her.
„ Father? Fa-ther!..“ she puled these words with such pain, if she could at him. The man sat near her, his left hand held a silver necklace. The one he once gifted to her mother, he recognized it.

Some small details from the manga that were eradicated from today’s ep of Vinland saga for whatever reason:
Canute establishing authority among Thorkell’s men right after they make fun of him.
Askeladd being surprised about Thorfinn being of noble descent, because real talk tho, if Thors never left the Jomsvikings, Thorfinn probably could’ve been some high ranking warlord or something.
Thorfinn getting embarrassed about Askeladd patching him up and Askeladd being surprised that Leif was traveling with Thors.
Atli listing off the names of Askeladd’s men when he found out they were dead.
Thorkell covering up for Thors and Helga when some guards were trying to investigate their situation.
Thorfinn being lowkey weirded out and super confused by Askeladd’s laughter lmao. We do see his reaction in the anime but only for a brief second.
Honestly, we didn’t really see Thorfinn just hilariously being confused in general:
His face was such a mood here
Thorfinn’s reaction to Thorkell regretting not being able to beat Thors
And Thorfinn being offended at the fact Askeladd simply offered up his life to Canute despite him chasing after it for years.
The anime’s been following the manga pretty well so I don’t know what happened in this episode. A lot of these are small details but Canute calling himself a king and Askeladd being surprised about Thorfinn’s family line would’ve been nice to see animated.

Random Headcanon
Vinland Saga part 1
ASKELADD
🔪 He can speak Welsh, old Nordic and English. When he’s angry sometimes insult in Welsh, but he tries to avoid it.
🔪 Askeladd is very conscious of he’s going bald, so, whenever he can puts the blame on Thorfinn: “I’m going bald because of you, damn kid”.
🔪 He teaches Thorfinn to play Hnefatafl this is another type of duel, Thorfinn frustrates a lot when he loses. So far, no one has beaten Askeladd, the only ones who can last a bit more are Ear and Bjorn, the last because he knows the strategies of Askeladd.
🔪 In the Flytings, the battle of insults, Askeladd is always the winner, he will destroy you with his silver tongue. His loquacity serve to entertain the gang during the nights, Askeladd isn’t a great narrator, but his charisma balances everything else.
🔪 Askeladd likes drink, but not so much (he knows how vulnerable a man is when he’s drunk). In order of preference he likes: red wine, beer and mead.
🔪 Isn’t a secret that Askeladd is a reserved man, so, they know he bath each Saturday alone, he is always far from his comrades. But sometimes, he approaches to the gang when he listen a fuss. Isn’t the first time they play to a chicken fall in the water of the lake.
BJORN
🍄 He has freckles and this is a fact.
🍄 Bjorn knows about medicinal plants, fungus and how heal injuries. He’s highly respect by the gang, not only for being the second in command or for being a great warrior, as healer he’s very useful. And his words are law.
🍄 He spends many time in tidies himself up, (the Viking were pretty clean), but he cleans very much his beard. And he knows to do a lot of types of braids.
🍄 Bjorn can use some weapons, he’s very good with the lance, and he can throw it with both hands. He’s left-handed, but he ended up being ambidextrous. But he can use a sword, too. He don’t like the bow because how he likes kill, he don’t feel the adrenalin in the battle.
🍄 Bjorn knows a lot of epic poems, sagas and other stories, but always lets Askeladd counts them. He sings very well, too; but only does it when he’s bathing.
🍄 He likes animals, especially the horses.
🍄 Bjorn is a good cook, sometimes he strains mushrooms in the dishes and tries not to have a lot of onion (he hates it).
THORFINN
🐺 Isn’t the first time that Thorfinn has louses, in fact was worst when he had fleas, well, how all the gang. No one knew were they came from (everybody looks Alti), this caused that during a long spell they had to wear their hair and beard very short. No problem for Askeladd, indeed.
🐺 Speaking about the cleaning, Thorfinn doesn’t like very much bath, he prefers the house bath (where the water is usually warm or hot), but there’s a problem. If you’re dirty you don’t sail with Askeladd. So, Thorfinn is forced to bath with the rest of the gang. You see the kid trying to not enjoy the nonsenses of the men who surrounded him, but sometimes a half smile escapes from his lips.
🐺 He’s a teen, after all.
🐺 Surprisingly, Thorfinn takes the Askeladd’s advices very well in the Hnefatafl, because Thorfinn knows the brute force or the technique with the dagger doesn’t work here. So, he listens carefully and tries to use the advices in the next duel, but he loses again.
🐺 Thorfinn loves animals very much, and when he’s alone and some dog or cat approaches to him, he looks his surround to make sure that no one see him and caresses the animal. He always like has a pet, like a cat or a dog; but in Iceland the life was hard and he can’t, he had to take care of the sheep. And now, he doesn’t have any chance.
