Herbert Mullin (1947-?)

Herbert William Mullin is an American serial killer, responsible for the murders of 13 people in California in the 1970s. When Mullin was 18 years old, his best friend Dean Richardson died and he built a shrine to him in his bedroom. He later confessed that he was scared that he may be gay, despite having a long-term girlfriend. At the age of 21, Mullin’s family, with his permission, committed him to a mental hospital. He would extinguish cigarettes on his skin, attempted to enter the priesthood and would pound on walls and floors, shouting at people who were not there. He would often discharge himself after just a few days. Later, FBI profiler Robert K. Ressler said Mullin was suffering from paranoid schizophrenia, possibly accelerated by using LSD or marijuana. By 1972, 25-year-old Mullin had moved back home with his parents in Felton, California, in the Santa Cruz Mountains. By this time he was hearing voices that told him an earthquake was coming, and that only human sacrifice could help him save California; Mullin’s birthday, April 18, happened to be the anniversary of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, which he thought was significant. Mullin believed that the Vietnam War had produced enough death to hold back the earthquakes, but with the war winding down he would need to start killing people in order to keep the earthquake away. On October 13, 1972, Mullin claimed his first victim when he beat Lawrence White to death with a baseball bat. White, a homeless 55-year-old man, was hitchhiking and Mullin hit him after tricking him into looking at the car engine. Mullin later stated that the victim was in fact Jonah from the Bible, and that he sent Mullin a telepathic message saying, “Pick me up and throw me over the boat. Kill me so that others will be saved.” His body was discovered the following day. 11 days later, 24-year-old Mary Guilfoyle, a college student, was running late and decided to hitchhike. Mullin picked her up and stabbed her through the chest and back. He dissected her body, scattering her remains along a road.

On November 2, 1972, Mullin confessed his sins at church. In his paranoid schizophrenic state, he believed Father Henri Tomei wanted to volunteer as his next sacrifice to prevent the earthquakes. He beat, stabbed and kicked the priest, who bled to death in the confessional while a parishioner looked on and ran away. The witness described a tall, young man in dark clothing and black boots, but this did not help police, who speculated that Tomei possibly startled a robber. Following this incident, Mullin attempted to join the U.S. Marines, but failed the drug test. This rejection fuelled Mullin’s delusions of conspiracies and groups of “hippies” out to get him. He stopped taking drugs, believing they were causing his problems in life. In December 1972, Mullin bought a .22-calibre revolver and decided to kill Jim Gianera, a high school friend who had sold him marijuana, blaming him for his rejection from the Marines. However, when he arrived at Gianera’s house, he discovered his old friend had moved. The cabin was now occupied by Kathy Francis, who gave Mullin Gianera’s new address. There, Mullin killed Gianera and his wife before returning to the Francis home, where he shot and killed her and her 2 sons (aged 4 and 9). As Francis’ husband, who wasn’t there at the time, was a known drug dealer, this was thought to be the motive for the triple homicide. Prosecutors later used the murder of Kathy Francis to dispute Mullin’s claims of insanity, as he killed her to remove a witness who could link him to the murder of Jim Gianera. Around a month later, in February 1973, Mullin was wandering around Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park, when he encountered 4 teenage boys camping illegally. He walked over to them, and claimed to be a park ranger. He ordered them to leave as they were “polluting” the forest, but they refused. Mullin killed all 4 boys and abandoned their bodies, which were found a week later.

The final murder took place on February 13, 1973. Mullin was driving through Santa Cruz when he passed Fred Perez, a retired fisherman, who was weeding his lawn. For no apparent reason, Mullin doubled back and used his rifle to kill the man with a single shot to the heart. He then got back into the car and drove away. This incident occurred in broad daylight and there were several witnesses, one of whom got Mullin’s license plate number. He was captured a few minutes later and a “docile” Mullin was arrested without incident. During interrogation, Mullin admitted to his crimes, telling police that voices in his head told him to kill people in order to prevent an earthquake. He claimed that the only reason there had not been an earthquake recently was due to his handiwork. As Mullin admitted his crimes, the focus of the trial was whether he was sane and culpable for his actions. The fact that he showed evidence of covering his tracks and premeditation was highlighted by the prosecution, while the defence argued that Mullin had a history of mental illness and had paranoid schizophrenia. On August 19, 1973, Mullin was declared guilty of first-degree murder (premeditated) in the cases of Jim Gianera and Kathy Francis), while for the other 8 murders Mullin was found guilty of second-degree murder. He also pled guilty to second-degree murder in the case of Father Henry Tomei. Mullin has been denied parole 8 times since 1980. He is known to have interacted with Edmund Kemper during his incarceration, sharing a cell once. Kemper recalled: “Well, [Mullin] had a habit of singing and bothering people when somebody tried to watch TV. So I threw water on him to shut him up. Then, when he was a good boy, I’d give him some peanuts. Herbie liked peanuts. That was effective because pretty soon he asked permission to sing. That’s called behaviour modification treatment.”

Herbert Mullin

Herbert William Mullin is an American serial killer who killed 13 people in the 1970s.

Voted ‘Most Likely to Succeed,’ by his classmates Mullin was popular and confident at school. Shortly after graduating his best friend was killed in a car accident, devastating Mullin. Aged 21, he was committed to a mental health hospital, this began a series of short stays at various hospitals ending when he would discharge himself after only a few days. Mullin put out cigarettes on his skin and was evicted from an apartment after repeatedly pounding on the floor and shouting at people who were not there. It was later suggested that he struggled with paranoid schizophrenia, possibly accelerated by use of LSD or marijuana.

By 1972, Mullin, 25 years old, had moved back in with his parents in California. At this point he was hearing voices telling him an earthquake was coming and that he could save California with human sacrifices. Mullin believed the Vietnam War had produced enough American deaths to prevent an earthquake up to this point but with the war beginning to end and the deaths becoming fewer he would need to start killing people to have a high enough death count to stop the disaster occurring.

Mullin beat a homeless man to death with a baseball bat, he later claimed the victim had sent him a telepathic message saying that he was Jonah from the Bible and has asked to be killed to save others. 11 days later Mullin stabbed a college student, dissected her body and scattered her remains along a hillside road. Mullin went to church to confess but his delusional state led him to believe the priest volunteered to be his next sacrifice, he kicked and stabbed him to death in the confessional booth. At this point Mullin decided to join the US Marines, after passing the physical and psychiatric tests he failed the drugs test and was rejected. Mullin purchased several guns and killed his high school friend who sold him marijuana, blaming him for the rejection, and the man’s wife. He then killed a woman and her two sons, the father of who was a known drug dealer, leading experts to believe these 5 deaths were due to connections to drug trafficking. A month later Mullin shot 4 boys camping illegally in a park after accusing them of polluting the forest. Mullin’s final murder was a retired fisherman who was gardening his front lawn, Mullin drove past him, turned around and then shot him fatally in broad day light. Multiple witnesses contacted the police and gave Mullin’s license plate number leading police to him. Mullin was found and did not attempt arrest.

Mullin confessed to the killings and claimed they prevented earthquakes, he noted there were no earthquakes during his killing spree but that a 5.8 earthquake hit the area shortly after his arrest. Due to his confession Mullin’s trial focussed on whether he was sane during the killings. Two were found to be premeditated and he was convicted of first degree murder. The eight other murders were charged as second-degree due to their more impulsive nature.

Mullin was sentenced to life imprisonment, he has been denied parole 10 times and is unlikely to ever be released.

Serial Killer Potential! According To Your Zodiac

The stars are not always 100% accurate in predicting our personalities. However, they can provide some pretty interesting and important insights to some aspects of our behaviours. We all can admit to having a dark side to us. Think about it! Even the bubbliest of individuals do tend to lean more on the morbid side of life at times. There seems to be something within us that finds comfort in morbidity. The question however remains, is the solace derived from the dark side of life enough to drive us into a murderous rage? Well, let’s see what the stars say shall we?

Aries (March 21 - April 19):

Aries are known for going for what they want no matter what. Is death a barrier they can simply overlook as a means to an end? Well, it turn out that it is for some. Serial killers such as Joseph Franklin, Donald Harvey, Paul Knowles, Keith Jespersen, Charles Sobhraj and Herbert Mullin are some of the headliners in the Aries serial killer hall of fame. Combined, their actions have been known to claim the lives of anywhere between thirty and slightly shy of sixty individuals. Aries clearly are a blood lusty lot but are they lustier than the rest of the zodiacs?

Taurus (April 20 - May 20):

Taurus seem to be giving the rest of the Zodiacs a run for their money as far as serial killer victims are concerned. While the number of notable killers may be on the lower end of the spectrum, the victims aren’t. Starting from the pioneer of the blood thirsty art of serial killing Mr. H. H. Holmes, fondly known as the Torture Doctor who has a record two hundred bodies under his belt to Martha Becks who has under twenty victims, Taurus serial killers have for sure carved their names into the walls of history. This zodiac also has a number of female contenders that are worth mentioning. We already talked about Martha Becks right? Well we can’t forget her sister in blood thirst, Amy Archer Gilligan. Other notable names worth dropping under this zodiac include The Moon Maniac (Albert Fish) and The Gorilla Killer (Earle Nelson).

Gemini (May 21 - June 20):

Do not be fooled by the bubbly, every cheerful nature of Geminis. This happy adventurous bunch seem to have a liking for spilling blood. Notable serial killing Geminis make up about twelve name sin the killer hall of fame. A good number of these individuals have an interesting story to them. They were often found to have certain mental health challenges and were seemingly masters of double lives. Combined, their known victims account for a minimum of one hundred and twenty four souls.

Since we have established a culture of notable name dropping let us continue shall we. For Geminis, we have The Son Of Sam, Jeffery Dahmer, Kenneth Bianchi, The Hill side Strangler, Milwaukee Strangler, Richard Chase, The Vampire of Dusseldorf, John Collins, Author Shawcross, Leonard Lake, Wayne Williams, Danny Rolling, Peter Sutcliffe, and Robert Lee Yates.

Cancer (June 21 - July 22):

Do not be fooled by their calm exterior. Cancers can be a rather ruthless bunch if pushed to a corner. While they have a few mentionable names, only four are worth mentioning. Genene Jones, John Reginald, Carl Panzram and Gary Heidnik combined have a minimum of ninety two victims whose murders can be directly linked to them. The blood lust of Cancers can be attributed to their ability to love with every fibre of their being as well as their moody tendencies. So better not cross a Cancer on a particularly moody day.

Leo (July 23 - August 22):

Leos are perhaps the least likely to be serial killers out of all the zodiacs. These gentle souls care more about enjoying life and all the mysterious and beautiful things it has to offer than getting irked by the little upsetting things that life throws at them. This, however, doesn’t mean that they are devoid of any mentionable names. Myra Hindley, Anthony Sowell and John Haigh together are responsible for the murders of at least twenty five victims.

Virgo (August 23 - September 22):

When it comes to blood thirsty traits, Virgo are serious contenders. If we are name dropping, then allow us to mention just but a few. To start us off, we have Henry Lee Lucas who is responsible for more than one hundred and fifty seven victims. Others in this list include Rodney Alcala, Paul Bernardo, Richard Angelo, Albert DeSalvo, Richard Biegenwald, Harrison Graham, Ed Gein, Marybeth Tinning and Gerald Stano. The ten combined have claimed the lives of at least three hundred and ninety seven people. Not only are these Virgo headliners known for their numbers, they are also known for their grim methods.

Libra (September 23 - October 22):

Libras have some of the most eclectic personalities in the zodiac yet have one of the least notable names in the serial killer hall of fame. Not to take away from their ‘glory’ but for the extremes that appear within this zodiac, four is an impressively low number. Patrick Kearney also referred to as The Freeway Killer is the star of this zodiac with a body count of up to forty three unfortunate souls. Fellow blood thirsty souls include Angelo Buono Jr., Bobby Joe Long and Gerald Gallego. Together, all four have a body count of at least seventy five people.

Scorpio (October 23 - November 21):

Scorpios are a unique bunch. This is the first zodiac to have a bloody duo; Alton Coleman and Debra brown. Another one of your mentionable killers is Carl Eugene. Other blood thirsty members of this camp include Charles Manson, Belle Gunness, Nannie Doss and William Heirens. These notable mentions are responsible for the loss of at least one hundred and sixty nine lives.

Sagittarius (November 22 - December 21):

For a people whose zodiac sign is half beast and half man, the likelihood of serial killer tendencies is high. While this zodiac has not attracted a large crowd of killers, it does have some of the more famous ones. Ted Bundy for example is a member of this cosmic family. He is not only renowned for his killing sprees but his successes at escaping the arm of the law even after it had caught up with him severally. Other notable mentions include Richard Cottingham, Edmund Kemper, Carlton Gray, and Denis Neilsen. Together, this murderous bunch have claimed the lives of at least seventy four people.

Sagittarius are known for their great conversational skills as well as their wits. It is no wonder that some would speculate that the number of serial killers under this zodiac that are yet to be discovered could be shockingly high.

Capricorn (December 22 - January 19):

It is natural for Capricorns to distance themselves from people. They do not trust easily and it takes a lot to get into their inner circle. Their natural distrust can tend to make them rather cold individuals. It is no wonder that the total body count of Capricon serial killer victims rises to as high as one hundred and nineteen. Our notable mentions under this zodiac include Dean Corll, Joe Ball, Ian Brady, Charles Ng, William Bonin, and Vincent Johnson.

Aquarius (January 20 - February 18):

Aquarius are another happy zodiac that does not seem to be blood thirsty. There are only four notable mentions under this zodiac with a combined body count of forty nine victims.

Pisces (February 19 - March 20):

Pisces are known to have two extremes. They can either be super relaxed individuals or super intense. It’s probably the latter that has seen them accrue at least twelve serial killers with a body count of at least two hundred and seventy nine victims.

Từ tháng mười năm 1972 đến tháng hai năm 1973, một loạt vụ giết người xảy ra quanh Santa Cruz, California. Nạn nhân bao gồm bốn người đi cắm trại (bị giết trong một vụ thảm sát tập thể), một linh mục, một người đàn ông đang đào đất trong vườn, một cô gái đi nhờ xe, một người quen và vợ, và một người mẹ với hai đứa con (cũng bị giết chung). Có rất nhiều kẻ giết người bị loạn tinh thần khi thực hiện hành vi giết người, nhưng hiếm khi tòa tuyên bố hắn vô tội vì lý do mất lý trí. Điều này có thể thấy trong một số vụ án lo ngại bị cáo sau khi được thả có nên bị giam ở bệnh viện tâm thần. Nhưng luật pháp cũng ghi nhận chứng loạn tâm thần, một chứng bệnh tâm lý, không nhất thiết biểu thị mất lý trí. Một người có thể bị ảo tưởng khi gây án nhưng vẫn nhận thức được việc mình làm là sai. Ý chí phạm tội (mens rea)

Hệ thống luật pháp dựa trên quan điểm con người là những tác nhân lý trí có thể tự do lựa chọn hành động trong đa số sự việc, và vì thế con người phải chịu trách nhiệm và có thể bị trừng phạt. Tuy nhiên, chuyên gia tâm thần khẳng định rằng phần lớn hành vi còn người được quyết định bằng những yếu tố vượt ngoài khả năng điều khiển và nhận thức của họ. Hướng điều tra chủ chốt trong vụ án có liên quan đến rối loạn tâm thần là xác định trạng thái tâm thần của bị cáo tại thời điểm xảy ra vụ án và chứng bệnh tâm thần đó có liên hệ đến hành vi gây án hay không. Quan điểm này có từ thời Hy Lạp, nhưng chính xác hơn, thuật ngữ bị cáo rối loạn tâm thần của Mỹ xuất phát từ một vụ án ở Anh năm 1843. Daniel M’Naghten cảm thấy mình bị quấy rối bởi những điệp viên tưởng tượng và để trả đòn phủ đầu, hắn bắn chết thư ký của Thủ tướng (nhầm tưởng đó là Thủ tướng). Tại Mỹ, nhiều năm liền có những cải tổ, bao gồm việc thêm lưu ý rằng dù một người có thể nhận thức được tính chất phạm tội của hành vi, họ vẫn bị thúc ép thực hiện hành vi ấy. Dị thường

Khi cảnh sát đến một nông trại 195 mẫu bên ngoài Plainfield, Wisconsin vào năm 1957 để nói chuyện với người độc thân lập dị Edward Gein vì nghi ngờ dính líu đến một vụ cướp, hắn không có nhà. Thẩm phán Robert Gollmar phán hắn có tội với tội danh giết người cấp độ một, nhưng trong giai đoạn chịu tội, Gein lại được phán vô tội vì lý do mất lý trí và phải nhập viện lần nữa. Rối loạn tâm thần

Bệnh tâm thần cực độ bao gồm những cảm xúc, hành vi, suy nghĩ, niềm tin kỳ dị và nhiễu loạn có thể gây ảnh hưởng đến khả năng hoạt động của một người trong công việc và các mối quan hệ, thường sẽ cô lập người đó. Tâm thần phân liệt là chứng bệnh suốt đời chưa có thuốc chữa. Thuốc kháng thần có thể giúp ổn định hóa học não bộ, nhưng phải được sử dụng dưới sự giám sát chặt chẽ. Có rất nhiều vụ án mà hung thủ đã dừng thuốc. Trên thực tế, một số người mắc bệnh tâm thần phân liệt được cho là đủ khả năng thực hiện một số giai đoạn của quá trình phạm tội, bao gồm tự bào chữa. Colin Ferguson, hung thủ của vụ giết người tập thể vào một buổi chiều ở giờ cao điểm tại đường sắt Long Island, là một ví dụ. Một người khác, dù không đến mức độ đó những vẫn muốn tự bào chữa là “Unabomber” Theodore John Kaczynski, người đã giết ba người và làm bị thương hơn hai mươi người khác bằng một loại vụ đánh bom bằng thư từ. Một dạng rối loạn tâm thần khác là rối loạn xúc động lưỡng cực (bipolar affective disorder), từng được biết đến với cái tên rối loạn hưng cảm-trầm cảm (manic-depressive disorder). Đó là chứng rối loạn tuần hoàn dựa trên những thay đổi tâm trạng đột ngột từ hưng cảm sang trầm cảm, và người bệnh có thể có những giai đoạn cảm xúc mạnh và năng lượng cao khiến họ cảm thấy siêu nhiên. Họ đi không ngơi nghỉ suốt một quãng thời gian dài, có những suy nghĩ lớn lao, và có thể hoàn thành khối lượng công việc lớn. Tuy nhiên, họ sẽ ngay lập tức chuyển sang trạng thái trầm cảm nghiêm trọng, đôi lúc còn kèm theo ảo giác và ý nghĩ tự tử. Có thể họ nghe thấy những giọng nói ở một trong hai giai đoạn, nhưng ở khoảng giữa hai giai đoạn, họ cảm thấy bình thường.

Là người khác làm

Trong giới chuyên gia sức khỏe tâm thần, việc chẩn đoán chứng rối loạn đa nhân cách (dissociative identity disorder - DID) được ghi trong quyển DSM-IV thay cho tên gọi cũ trước năm 1994 (multiple personality disorder - MPD). Căn bệnh này thường bị nhầm lẫn với tâm thần phân liệt vì có nhân cách bị chia cắt. Ý nghĩa của DID là một người bị phân chia thành nhiều nhân cách khác nhau và hai hoặc nhiều hơn hai nhân cách phụ cùng chia sẻ một cơ thể, mỗi nhân cách có một danh tính riêng và thay phiên điều khiển tính cách và hành vi. Người ta tin rằng đây là kết quả của một chấn thương tâm lý (ngay cả điều này vẫn còn đang được tranh luận), như là lạm dụng tình dục, và thường phát sinh trước năm tuổi. Ở một mức độ nào đó, như một số chuyên gia đã viết, “nhân cách thay thế” trỗi dậy để bảo vệ “nhân cách cốt lõi” trước những cảm xúc quá mãnh liệt. Một số nhân cách thay thế xuất hiện để hình thành những động lực bị cấm.

Trong những năm 1980 và đầu những năm 1990, DID là một phương pháp trị liệu để đối phó với những ký ức bị kìm nén. Chuyên gia chỉ ra rằng ký ức chấn thương không được ghi nhớ vẫn còn có năng lượng để bộc phát thành các triệu chứng như trầm cảm, tê dại, đa cảm, và phản ứng với những kích thích nhất định từ môi trường có thể chạm đến ký ức đó. Đôi lúc còn có cả những hồi tưởng mơ hồ. Những người này có thể “thoát xác”, mất liên hệ với thực tế, bỏ qua những nỗi đau thể xác, và chịu đựng một cơn hoảng loạn bất ngờ. Họ cũng sẽ mắc phải rối loạn ăn uống và một số thói nghiện ngập, và ngược đãi người khác hoặc chính bản thân họ. Nhìn chung, họ gặp vấn đề với chuyện tình cảm và có thể bị rối loạn tình dục và rối loạn giấc ngủ.

Mặc dù tính xác thực của DID vẫn còn gây tranh cãi, rất nhiều tội phạm đã nhìn ra tiềm năng giảm nhẹ tội, và có khi còn thoát được tội. Một số kẻ giết người hàng loạt cho rằng mình có một nhân cách khác trong cơ thể để trốn tránh trách nhiệm. Ví dụ, John Wayne Gacy, người đã giết ba mươi ba chàng trai trẻ dưới tên “Jack Hanley”, một nhân cách thay thế. Sau khi nhận tội và vẽ bản đồ tầng hầm bên dưới căn nhà nơi cất giấu hơn hai mươi nạn nhân, hắn “thoát xác” và giả vờ rằng Hanley đã thực sự vẽ bản đồ. Nhắc đến việc làm giả một nhân cách “xấu” khiến hắn giết người, kẻ sát nhân thường được liên hệ nhất là Kenneth Bianchi, thành viên của một nhóm tên là “Hillside Stranglers” (Những kẻ bóp cổ bên sườn đồi). Họ bắt đầu hành động ở Los Angeles vào năm 1977, và trong một vài tháng, chín phụ nữ bị sát hại và vứt xác dọc theo lòng đường bên sườn đồi. Nhân chứng đã nhìn thấy hai người đàn ông cùng với một nạn nhân, nghĩa là có nhiều hơn một hung thủ gây án. Người phụ nữ thứ mười bị bỏ bên trong cốp xe của cô, nhưng phải đến vụ án chết hai mạng người ở Bellevue, Washington, cảnh sát mới có đầy đủ đầu mối dẫn hướng điều tra đến Kenneth Bianchi và em họ của hắn, Angelo Buono.

Khi Bianchi ngồi tù, luật sư bào chữa của hắn nhờ bác sĩ tâm thần John Watkins khám cho hắn. Watkins cho Bianchi vào trạng thái thôi miên, khiến hắn thừa nhận gây ra các vụ giết người và khai ra em họ mình, rồi hắn cho rằng mình bị MPD. Vì hắn giết người dưới tên “Steve Walker”, hắn không có khả năng hầu tòa. Ba chuyên gia khác cũng bị thuyết phục với trường hợp của Bianchi.

Bên công tố đã thuê chuyên gia riêng, bác sĩ Martin Orne, người biết rằng cảnh sát đã điều tra ra “Steve Walker” là tên của một sinh viên đại học mà Bianchi đã trộm danh tính để làm giả quá trình chẩn đoán. Để bẫy hắn, bác sĩ Orne nghĩ ra một kế: ông nói với Bianchi rằng đa số người mắc MPD có nhiều hơn hai nhân cách, và không lâu sau “Billy” xuất hiện. Bianchi cũng giả vờ chạm vào một người giả tưởng không có ở đó, nhưng ảo giác không phải là một triệu chứng, và cơ quan thẩm quyền đã biết rằng Bianchi đang diễn kịch. Dưới sức ép, hắn thừa nhận lừa gạt cảnh sát. Điều này tạo điều kiện cho công tố khép tội hắn với bảy vụ giết người và buộc tội em họ hắn. Một vấn đề đã nảy sinh tại phiên tòa của Arthur Shawcross, kẻ bị truy tố giết mười phụ nữ ở Rochester, New York, từ 1988 đến 1989. Luật sư bào chữa thuê bác sĩ Dorothy Lewis, bác sĩ tâm thần và là chuyên gia về ảnh hưởng của các chứng rối loạn lên hành vi bạo lực. Lewis tin rằng Shawcross gặp chấn thương tâm lý vô cùng nghiêm trọng khi còn bé và mắc chứng động kinh thùy thái dương chưa hoàn thiện làm chặn ký ức. Những cơn động kinh chỉ xảy ra dưới những tình cảnh đặc biệt, như là khi hắn ở một mình với gái mại dâm vào ban đêm. Shawcross hỗ trợ bà bằng cách chấp nhận thôi miên, và bà đã quay phim lại để đưa ra trước tòa. Lewis rất tức giận khi tổ bào chữa không thể lấy được bản quét não mà bà cần để chứng minh vụ án dưới góc độ thần kinh học. Bà cũng không biết rằng một chuyên gia biện hộ khác cũng đã thẩm tra Shawcross cùng lúc đó - điều này có thể đã ảnh hưởng đến những gì Shawcross nói với bà. Vì thế, hy vọng sử dụng hắn làm ví dụ cho lý luận của bà trở nên rắc rối.

Bác sĩ Park Dietz, bên công tố, cho rằng Shawcross mắc chứng rối loạn nhân cách phản xã hội (antisocial personality disorder), không được coi là rối loạn hay tổn thương tâm thần gây cản trở nhận thức. Hắn nhớ đầy đủ các vụ án của mình để cung cấp chi tiết và đầu mối cho cảnh sát tìm ra hai nạn nhân nữa. Hắn cũng đã cố gắng tránh né điều tra và tránh vây bắt, vì vậy hắn biết điều hắn làm là sai và có thể khiến hắn bị bắt giam. Trên thực tế, hắn đã từng ngồi tù vì tội giết người tình dục. Kết thúc phiên tòa dài năm tuần, thầm phán ra quyết định Shawcross hoàn toàn tỉnh táo và khép tội hắn với mười điểm tội giết người cấp độ ha. Hắn nhận mười bản án hai mươi năm tù đến tù chung thân.
