This meme is a MURDER ATTEMPT.
Tumblr media
I am absolutely fucking serious. The original meme, without the big red denial, is someone's attempt to fucking kill people.
There is NO SAFE DOSAGE of pennyroyal oil. Even Mother Earth News says there's no reason to use pennyroyal essential oil for ANYTHING, even topically or as a fragrance, for fuckssake! That should give you some idea about how dangerous it is!
Pennyroyal tea, plant matter in hot water, is a traditional abortifacient. It is *incredibly* dangerous, induces abortion by bringing the body close to organ failure (and frequently pushing the system right over the edge, because dosage is impossible to meter), but I would drink a gallon of it before I took a half-teaspoon of pennyroyal essential oil.
Two teaspoons, taken across 48 hours, has successfully killed someone.
Three teaspoons taken as a single dosage killed the consumer within THREE HOURS.
There is NO SAFE DOSAGE! FOR PENNYROYAL OIL INTERNALLY! NONE!
The person who made this meme is PURPOSEFULLY, ACTIVELY, trying to get desperate people killed!

Plan C: Parsley Tea
Brought to you by A Tired Witch
Some advice I got years ago but which I rarely see circulating has unfortunately become especially relevant this week, so I am writing it down:
Parsley is a gentle natural abortifacient in *early* stages of pregnancy in that it induces menstruation. If you suspect you could be pregnant too late for something like plan B (which is time sensitive to within something like two, at best three, days) or weigh more than 155 pounds, at which point it loses effectiveness, and have arrived at a late or missed period, parsley may provide a safe, easy, stealthy DIY method for flushing out an unwanted zygote. At least, that is the folk wisdom that was shared with me, and it seems to be supported by warnings against over-use of parsley for those who are pregnant and want to stay that way or who are trying to get pregnant on most medical and pregnancy advice sites.
What's more is that parsley has other herbal benefits, such as containing vitamins K and C and supporting blood and heart health! This both provides an excuse to use it as well as actual health benefits.
To Terminate Pregnancy with Parsley:
(Note--you do need to be aware of any medications or vitamins you are already taking, and while this is the dosing described to me and which I have seen done safely, it is not a formal guideline. Some random witch on tumblr is not a replacement for careful consideration of your own medical situation and associated research)
Over-consumption is key, making volume and potency essential (be advised that the one toxicity risk I am aware of is that you *can* overdose on Vitamin C). I was never taught a specific amount and so I'm not going to just google it and copy the results as if it's knowledge I can attest to when I can't, but what I can tell you is that tea is far and away the fastest and easiest way to get large amounts of it into your system in a stealthy, ongoing way. People I know who have used parsley successfully for this purpose have purchased one fresh bundle as it's sold in most grocery stores--about a handful of stems--to be consumed over the next two or so days.
Once you have your fresh parsley, simply chop it--finer is better, but you hardly need to be Gordon Ramsey--and then place it in a strainer, teabag, or simply drop it in your mug. (You'll end up drinking little bits of slimy wet leaf this way but that's harmless, just not pleasant.) Add hot water. Let sit 3-5 minutes at least, drink. If you can, though, leave the parsley in your mug/tumbler. Since concentration is everything, it sitting in there and getting stronger and stronger and stronger can only serve you better. Whenever you are out of tea, refill, adding/replacing with fresh parsley whenever possible, though you can of course try to eek a little more out of the leaves you've already used if refilling on the go. Do this until you are out of parsley--it will probably last you two, maybe three days. By then you will hopefully have had a period.
If not, parsley is fairly harmless. You could continue doing this with a fresh batch for quite awhile as far as I'm aware, though I am a witch, not a doctor, and so cannot guarantee that. You should also be mindful, of course, of any allergies you may have.
Other natural abortifacients:
Raspberry is known to strengthen the uterus and ensure healthy menstruation, and is not necessarily harmful when pregnant, but if over-used can become so, particularly in early pregnancy. Doctors recommend no more than one cup a day for those in the early stages of a pregnancy, so in theory three or four cups should have the opposite effect and terminate a pregnancy instead of assisting it. Raspberry leaf teas are sold in stores, sometimes as "pregnancy tea" or as uterine tea.
Beyond that, there are also truly heavy hitters which can be acquired as herbal remedies in some locations (apparently) but which are *NOT* safe to just casually self-administer. Raspberry and parsley almkst certainly won't hurt you unless you happen to be allergic. Other traditional herbal abortificants potentially will. These include pennyroyal and rue, and I do not recommend their use as they are likely to just outright poison you. They are old standbys despite their serious dangers, however, and so I would remiss not to acknowledge that they're out there. Do not take this acknowledgement as a personal endorsement of their use--I want no responsibility for hospitalizing any of you.

In light of recent events in American politics, I'm going to beg people with a uterus to use herbal abortion methods only as a last resort. I beg you. It's really dangerous. And if you must, I beg that you do extensive research and seek out the experts in your area. Just stay safe.

To all my followers with a uterus in the USA:
SUPREME COURT DRAFT to overturn Roe v. Wade. Read it.
Secondly, there are many ways to discreetly have an abortion in the early stages of pregnancy.
Keep in mind, tese methods are not the safest and medical abortions should be prioritized if available.
HERE is a link with an article on those methods.
Sexual health is mental health is physical health and in this blog we take sexual health very seriously.

Herbalism isn't some "ancient knowledge taken from us". We gave it up willingly when we realized that medical science works a lot better and has less of a chance to kill you. Don't be an idiot and poison yourself or other people. Turn your energy towards underground networks that have the ability to actually help.

How Safe Are Home Remedies For Abortion And The Potential Side Effects
It’s important to note that the only safe and legal way to terminate a pregnancy is through medical or surgical abortion, which must be performed by a trained healthcare provider. However, some people may attempt to use home remedies as a way to induce an abortion. It’s important to understand that these methods are not scientifically proven to be safe or effective, and can pose serious health…

Hey friends.
I haven’t been on tumblr much lately, but I’m just a bot concerned for the abortion stuff going on right now.
Never, ever do at-home herbal abortions. Some ppl say “oh drink mugwort tea” or whatever. Don’t. I mean, I’m not in charge of you, but I care about humanity on a general level. Some of you, I care about on strangers-on-the-internet-who-I-like level. When I say I care, I mean it in some way, no matter how small.
Acupressure, acupuncture, pressure points, these things are also known to induce labour sometimes, especially the points that are used to ease menstrual cramps.
Herbs, (those with pharmaceutical properties, basically just unrefined drugs,) also can cause labour or miscarriage.
Do Not try to DIY an abortion.
Best case scenario: You go through a significantly painful (possibly traumatic) experience that is annoying & hard to deal with, it would take an entire day (if not longer) in the washroom, & you need to deal with the aftermath like cleaning up & feeling like you’re on the most painful & heavy-flowing day of your period for a while, possibly a few days.
Best case scenario: You don’t take enough. You are unharmed, the fetus is unharmed.
Other &/or bad cases include: failure to abort but messing up the fetus; infertility can come from a bunch of things including your insides getting all messed up (I’m not going to be too graphic); partial abortion (including the death of the fetus but no expulsion); severe injury, permanent damage; even death.
Regardless of my beliefs, you deserve safety. There are solutions.

It feels like this needs to be said, so I'm saying it. Please do not attempt herbal abortions without doing actual research first. I don't mean looking up what herbs are abortives. I mean actually looking up the potential risks and what can go wrong. Herbal abortions should not be treated as the alternative due to roe v wade being overturned. Y'all spreading the most minimal information about what herbs are abortives without any further research or context can seriously fuck up a person's health and lead to more problems.
Spread information about how to get abortions pills. Spread information about remote services. Spread information about doctors who are willing to sterilize AFAB people. Don't spread information you aren't even willing to do further research into yourself.

I'm EXTREMELY pro-choice
That being said, please for the love of the gods do not use some of the information going around about herbal abortions or ways to induce miscarriages.
ANY herb you ingest should be throughly researched and be consulted by a medical professional or certified herbalist. Especially if you are on other medications or have health problems
Things like Pennyroyal can cause It can cause serious liver and kidney damage as well as nervous system damage among other things
If you are in a situation where you feel this is the only choice, I urge you to reach out to friends or these resources to find other ways to achieve your goal safely:

PLEASE do not take herbal abortifacients.
I'm seeing so many posts going around about turning to pennyroyal, rue, black cohosh, et cetera to induce miscarriage, and I just have to post again about it: Please don't.
We live in a time where we've grown accustomed to knowing that our medication is going to do some fairly specific things, and to having lists of potential side-effects and interactions. Our medications come in carefully-compounded dosages, the same every time.
But okay, imagine you're growing pennyroyal, that toxic bitch, with the intent of brewing it into abortive tea. And early on in the season, your pennyroyal gets a pest. A beetle, say. Pennyroyal is resistant to most pests, but there's always going to be something that wants to gnaw on a plant. So this little critter chews on it for a bit, and the plant responds naturally, by increasing its terpene production.
The bug goes "Ugh!" and moves away (or dies). But this plant, which after a week or so will look just like all the other pennyroyal in the patch, is now extra-strong.
Okay, so what if you are super careful watching it for pests, you put mesh over your pennyroyal patch, you're sure it's been pampered and babied? Well, is there a hot day or two, or does the temperature rapidly swing from cool mornings to warm afternoons? Does half the patch get slightly more sunlight? Is there a bit of dirt that's less amenable to pennyroyal happiness, fewer nutrients or too many? EVERY PLANT in that patch could have a different level of pulegone in it.
How do you know how much pennyroyal tea to take, so that it convinces your body to ditch the fetus without accidentally also ditching your kidneys? The problem is, you don't. You absolutely can't. There's simply no way to be sure of the dosage, and when this stuff works--which is very, very far from every time--it does so because it is an actual poison and your body processes it the way it processes other poisons. It does so much damage to you that the pregnancy can't continue. This stuff is not kind, and it can kill you if you get the dosage wrong. Even getting the dosage right can cause you permanent organ damage.
The reason we don't use pennyroyal as actual medication now is because it's too dangerous to use. All of the would-be herbalists singing its praises are dangerous to you and need to be regarded as such. Cottagecore is an AESTHETIC, it's not a way to live, and the wisdom of our ancestors ultimately must boil down to when we know better, we do better. We know better than to drink pennyroyal tea now. We need to not go back to it.
(And as a reminder, pennyroyal essential oil has NO SAFE DOSAGE and even a drop can cause permanent organ damage to an adult. It kills you in a very ugly way, and there's not a lot that they can do to save you once you've been poisoned.)

This long but it is important... vitally important. LIFE SAVING LEVEL OF IMPORTANT particularly in regards to reproductive rights being under major attack, so please, please read.
With Roe being threatened there is a MUCH LARGER THAN EXPECTED (though maybe I shouldn't be surprised tbh), very misinformed, dangerous movement of people sharing herbs that are Abortifacients (which are TOXIC which is how they're able to cause an abortion) to large platforms of people, on all sorts of platforms with social media, from 13 years old and up, and giving HORRIBLE "advice" about it, which is at least 95% misinformation, and thus VERY concerning.
It's particularly prevalent on TikTok and the Discord servers these larger WitchTok creators have set up.
Including, but not limited to, vague AF instructions and dosing amounts, vague or flat out incorrect ways of dosing (tisane vs tincture vs topical vs THE BIG NO NO OF INSERTING IT), and apparently failing to realize that the SAFER and MORE SUCCESSFUL herbal abortions are blends of herbs to help balance the other effects, NOT JUST TAKING A LARGE (or multiple doses) OF A SINGLE TYPE OF HERB that's contraindicated for pregnancy.
PLEASE speak out against this.
Anywhere.
Everywhere.
I'm familiar with herbalism, grew up in a heavily holistic household, enough so that I know how damaging and deadly these methods have the potential to EASILY be, PARTICULARLY WHEN NOT UNDER THE GUIDANCE AND CARE OF A PROFESSIONAL, LICENSED, HERBALIST, preferably also with at least midwife involved.
They're also encouraging people to LIE TO DOCTORS about why they're seeking medical attention if (WHEN) something goes wrong. (Things like "tell them you ate something and now your stomach hurts.)
I have a a small, but decent amount of information and am looking into it further and am happy to share what I know, as well as anything other trustworthy people have made speaking out about it, of which there are plenty of TikToks for example.
But yeah, I am very concerned about how many people might end up with:
1. The "less" serious side effects (and yet, still ranging from potentially permanently damaging to life threatening) like burning a hole in their stomach, raging fevers, vomiting, diarrhea (all potentially extreme enough to need medical attention), dizziness (that sometimes doesn't go away), seizures etc
2. HEMORRHAGING, since some of these herbs increase flow to the pelvic area and uterus while others SLOW CLOTTING AND ALSO WEAKEN THE BLOOD VESSELS.
3. A number of different organs and systems that can be damaged like liver, kidneys, lungs, heart, nervous systems, cardiovascular system, brain, etc...
4. Organ failure/multi organ failure (mostly of those same organs)
5. Not successfully aborting the fetus and instead giving them extreme birth defects etc.
6. DEATH.
(Among other things, of course, like first and foremost allergies you may have to that family of plant, or contraindications for specific health conditions, or medication you're on, or hell your favorite herbal tea, essential oils etc etc)
I know people are scared, scared of losing their rights, scared about "what if" happens to them or someone they love, I know there is a resurgence of witchcraft, and as a result also natural treatments, but it's not coming from SAFE sources and these things really shouldn't be performed without being under the care of someone who knows their shit.
I also know that the lesson that needs to be driven home is one my momma taught us all:
Just because it's natural doesn't mean it's safe. Rattlesnake venom is natural but you don't see people lining up for that. And sure, deadly nightshade and foxglove are natural AND have been turned into the basis of medication commonly used by western doctors even, but if you don't know WTF you're doing with them, they'll kill you, very easily. Flowers we think of as harmless or ornamental can also be CRAZY POISONOUS. Have you heard of Oleander? Lily of the Valley?
As someone who only went through a (fairly short) phase of not using holistic treatments due to toxic living situations and the way I treated for using them plus not being allowed to spend money ON these items, I can honestly say I'm pretty sure I'm only as functional as a human being as I am because the holistic health care treats everything, and fills in the many, many, many gaps in "traditional" western medicine.
My quality of life got better once I was able to start practing what I know again.
I don't want to scare people away from ALL herbalism or holistic care... or to put it more accurately, I don't want to scare people away from herbalism (including Chinese herbalism), aromatherapy, homeopathy, Bach Flower Essences, the various types of body work etc AT ALL, since honestly it can be so good, so helpful, so healing.
By itself or in conjunction with western medicine, holistic health care and approaches to care and healing in general can change your life.
I just wanna put the rightful fear of REAL LIFE CONSEQUENCES into them regarding using unreliable and uneducated sources (like strangers on the internet who spout some shit off but don't go IN DEPTH about the dangers and how you need a professional for any BIG thing you want to do, and for many herbs used to treat many small things... and how you also shouldn't get your advice from all the various MLMs (like they did with Young Living and DoTerra which ALSO resulted in a LARGE increase in serious injuries from the (mis)use of essential oils), which are now starting to crop up regarding witchcraft and as they pick up speed I'm sure they're gonna include "herbal remedies" etc as well, cause essential oils and supplements weren't enough) so that fear of THE POTENTIAL DANGERS like organ failure and DEATH helps make sure they go TO legit fully trained, went to school for it, professional, certified/licensed holistic healthcare practioners who got these degrees from an accredited college and in order to BE certified/licensed they had to pass board exams/other monitored testing to prove they know their shit etc.
/end rant with many apologies for how long this is.
(But also not sorry cause if this helps to save even ONE person from making a bad choice, then it's worth it.)

Let's discuss herbs that must be avoided during pregnancy. Let this serve as a warning!
• Penny royal tea is not as toxic as people may think. Like a lot of things (alcohol, acetaminophen) it can be hard on the liver with long periods of constant use. But a pregnant person should be aware that it can cause spontaneous abortion and, therefore, it should be completely avoided during pregnancy. It's also important to know that a strongly infused oil should not be rubbed on the pelvic area as it may, with repeated use, cause loss of pregnancy
• Cotton root bark should never be drunk as a tea, it has a long history of being problematic during early pregnancy. It also has a capacity to thin blood so people who accidentally ingest this plant will need to counter these effects with something like shepherd’s purse or vitamin K.
• Black cohosh, blue cohosh, & angelica root should absolutely never be taken during pregnancy especially alongside one another. These three have the capacity to disrupt hormone development & will typically cause bleeding to begin in just a handful of days in pregnancy.
• Queen Anne's lace should be avoided by anyone who's attempting to conceive as she has a tendency to make the uterine wall slippery & prevents the precious egg from implanting. During pregnancy, if the egg can't implant, the pregnancy won't continue. Queen Anne’s Lace, also known as wild carrot, is very safe. As long as you are not trying to get pregnant or maintain a pregnancy in the early stages. Because it will prevent pregnancy.
• Mugwort should be avoided as small amounts consumed in pregnant women may cause uterine contractions. It's also worth noting that infused body oils made from this herb may have a similar effect when rubbed on the pelvic area.
• Rue, while not a commonly used herb, is showing up more in tea blends. This herb can be really problematic during pregnancy. So much so that women have avoided it during pregnancy for thousands of years. It can cause miscarriage. It should not be used for long periods of time or in large amounts to avoid potential adverse effects on the liver. Again, alcohol or acetiminophen can also damage the liver.
• Parsley, while safe in normal food level amounts, should be avoided in large quantities or in concentrated broths as it may cause spontaneous loss of pregnancy. Especially if the pregnant person happens to be taking larger doses of vitamin C, which can also endanger an early pregnancy
• Celery oil and celery seeds are likely unsafe when taken by mouth during pregnancy in large amounts. Consuming high amounts of celery might make the uterus contract and cause a miscarriage.
These are just a handful of the many herbs that may disrupt hormones or cause uterine contractions. These common plants that are easy to find should be avoided by anyone wanting to keep a pregnancy viable. Especially do not combine these herbs if you are pregnant, because you will have a miscarriage.
Keep learning about these & other herbs that may cause spontaneous abortion. Here are a few more; tansy, thuja, safflower, scotch broom, wormwood and yarrow.
I mean, how else will we avoid accidental miscarriages?

one of my friends has literally all of the symptoms (at least to my unprofessional eyes) of a serious but treatable hormonal/reproductive disease but because her family is very religious and traditional she has never gone to a gynecologist nor realizes that she needs to…. how do i gently convince her to do so
