12am incoherent Spider rant incoming:

The fact that a huge portion of Spider fans sympathise with him because they had similar family experiences in life is low-key making me feel kinda weird about people who hate him. Like let us recap the events real quick-

Like why do you hate a kid who did more to keep the Na’vi safe than Jake through the entire movie? “They’re after us” ok? This is not just about you dumbass it’s a whole-ass war, the RDA will still want to find the rest of your tribe because they want to ERADICATE your people 😐 the fact that it took him MONTHS to realise that running will not save anyone is 😬 (though I can get behind it bc family and all)

How is it that a goddamn 16 year old was the one who carried the good guy team??? 😐😐😐 he saved tribes from getting murdered, like literally, Tonowari said that no one had died, WONDER WHY???? DO Y’ALL THINK QUARITCH WAS NICE OUTTA NOWHERE???

And then he sunk a ship. HE SUNK A SHIP BY HIMSELF????

AND THEN HE INDIRECTLY SAVED KIRIS AND JAKE’S LIFE????

“He backstabbed them” I know you’re not blaming him for it when Neytiri exists 🧍 bestie outright REFUSED to help a literal child and didn’t bat an eye when he got captured. I can get behind her putting a knife to his throat in a rush of emotion but to very clearly ABANDON him? Fuck off. If her active decision to leave him behind didn’t turn into the reef Na’vi’s literal saving grace I’d be hating on her so actively.

“He saved his homocidal dad after he promised to murder his family” first of all the Sullys NEVER adopted him and it’s made abundantly clear. You sound like a gaslighter when you use that rhetoric. 😐📸

And secondly — HELL YEAH HE DID???? I would too if I was him and so would you and so would we all because Miles is the first grown up who GAVE A SHIT. MILES GENUINELY CARED. “It’s morally wrong” NO CAP 😀😀😀 NO ONE SAYS IT WAS RIGHT BUT THE KID HAD A SPLIT SECOND TO MAKE A DECISION AND HE CHOSE NOT TO BE A MURDERER.

You know what else is morally wrong tbw? Neglecting a child for 16 years.

“B-but they had no obligation to take care of a human kid—” cry me a fucking river 😐 what they want or not doesn’t fucking matter when we are talking about the mental health of an actual living breathing being. They ALL (the scientists, the Sullys and even the mf McKoskers or whatever the hell their last name is) were morally obligated to give that kid the best they could to ensure that he wouldn’t turn out like his father BECAUSE THEY’RE ADULTS.

The fact that their collective neglect DIDN’T blow up in their face is a pure miracle. Thant kid had every right to turn evil and burn the village that rejected him to feel it’s warmth but he DID NOT. In fact he is so goddamn kind and compassionate that he sees good even in a piece of shit monster like Quaritch.

It’s mind-blowing when we consider the lack of parental love and guidance throughout his life.

Pay my boy some respect. He was a literal hero and y’all act like the Omatekaya, ignoring whatever good he might do and then point fingers at him when he does something morally questionable LIKE ITS NOT JAKES FAULT??? LIKE THE REST OF THE ADULTS ARE NOT AT FAULT TOO??

Neglect makes people vulnerable. Vulnerable enough for an asshole to swoop in and manipulate them and it is only thanks to Spider’s unyielding loyalty and heart that neither Ardmore, nor Miles had pulled anything out of him in MONTHS of captivity. They had NO idea where Jake or Omatekaya were until Norm fucked it all up with his trackable ship.

Listen I love all the blorbos, but the parents dug their own grave so to speak. You fumble the bag repeatedly and then get surprised when it flies into your face? 🤨

Mossflower has so much going for it, like I’m not even being biased because my blorbo is in it. I will die on the hill of it being Best Redwall Book for several reasons.

-It’s as early Redwall as you can get without actually being Book 1. As such, it avoids a lot of subjects and patterns that would later become repetitive tropes... but it also avoids the Book 1 jankiness of horses and human structures and the implied existence of Portugal. The world as we will come to know it feels more or less fully realized here. The abbey’s not here yet, but its foundation literally is- and we also get our first look at Salamandastron and the extent of Mossflower Wood as a whole.

-It has some of the most solid protagonists around. The legendary hero Martin is here, but he’s at a low point for most of the story and has to work his way up to that legacy! And this is where he does it, this is what future Redwallers remember him for, not the events of Martin the Warrior. Also, Gonff is here? Hello? Maybe the single most charismatic character in the series? Not to mention Dinny, how often does a humble mole actually get to go on a quest in these books?

-This isn’t even getting into how badass all the rest of the woodlanders are, too, but... they absolutely are. This is a small band of rebels that’s been driven from their little houses, they don’t have the luxury of those huge sandstone walls to protect them, but they’re still fighting like hell and outsmarting their enemies to boot. Some of them are seasoned fighters, but some of them are just ordinary families, all banding together to take back their homeland. And they keep it up the whole time! They’re not just waiting around for a guy with a sword to tell them what to do!

-The villains are probably the most nuanced in the whole series. Seriously. There are four whole wildcats here (don’t forget Sandingomm!) and only ONE of them is unquestionably evil. It’s absolutely implied that Verdauga was a fearsome warlord in his day, but if nothing else, he raised ONE kid who turned out to be about as Lawful Good as you can get, and he actually scolds Tsarmina for being mean to her brother!! I wish we could have spent a little more time with Verdauga, honestly, I have so many questions for this man.

-There are a decent handful of morally grey characters here, actually. Chibb spies for the woodlanders, but he’s not the most dependable and is motivated by payment more than sympathy to their cause. Snakefish allies with our questing heroes, but he minces no words in warning them that he’ll just as soon eat them if it comes down to it. Even Argulor is really just out here looking for a bite to eat and can you really blame him, because ashleg is a snack

-Tsarmina herself is irredeemably cruel, but even still there are multiple facets to her. On one hand, she’s scary- big and powerful and ready to rip into anything/anyone with her bare claws. At the same time she can be a clever strategist when she wants to be- poisoning her father and framing her brother, and later manipulating two of her obstacles, Argulor and Bane, into taking each other out. And still yet it can be kind of funny to watch her in action, as she gets humiliated by the resistance on multiple occasions. And maybe there is even a little pathos there, as we see her mind start to slip, and get some glimpse into the deep fear and paranoia that completely overtake her at the end.

-There are just great supporting characters on both sides. Mask is amazing, Fortunata is fantastic. And yeah, Blorbo Supreme Ashleg is here, and I don’t NEED to write a whole essay about him to promote Mossflower as a whole but... having him here is nice! It helps!! May we all follow his example and pursue happier lives for ourselves!!!

-Mossflower laid the foundation for so many events and characters of later books. I mean yeah, it’s a prequel. It’s there to support the first book and by extension, everything that comes after. But so many other great titles in the series have a direct line to Mossflower, from Outcast to Long Patrol to Lord Brocktree and more. Did you enjoy those books? You’re welcome. The threads were already there, just waiting to be expanded upon.

-at one point a wooden leg gets used as a projectile weapon and if you don’t think that’s the best thing ever, I don’t know what else to tell you buddy

I just keep seeing all those posts criticizing characterizations and lack of accuracy in fanfiction and posts in the fandom at large and it kept stressing me out, I’m here to have fun and play around. Your fics in general are awesome and you’re one of the authors my boyfriend suggested that helped pull me in originally, so it checks you’d make me want to stay around. <3 I hope this was okay to say! Look, I've seen those posts too, and I can't lie -- they stress me out too. I've never claimed to write canon-accurate characters or straight from the comics plotlines. There are some authors who do that, and they're great! There's also a ton who don't, and they're also great.

Fanfiction isn't about being accurate to the canon source material. It's about writing your takes on characters, events, what-if scenarios, etc. This idea of "accuracy" only hamstrings writers, creators, and artists.

If I was being "accurate" to some DC source material, my Bruce would be very different. He would be meaner, and much more likely to hit/abuse his kids.

Do I like writing that? Hell no! And who's saying I have to?

This idea that fanon is somehow "ruining" canon and/or canon fanfiction is ridiculous to me. I keep seeing this kind of comics elitism pop up here and on TikTok, and it drives me nuts.

Fans have always, since the dawn of fanworks, taken characters and put their own spin on them. They've done things to your blorbo you hate, or that your friend hates, or your friend's friend really hates.

There was a comment by one TikTok creator on a similar post who asked people to stop telling her to "let people enjoy things" because she felt that that phrase was harmful to her involvement in and appreciation for the Batfamily/DC fandoms.

Well, I disagree. I think we should absolutely let people enjoy things, above all else.

So yeah. Write the OOC Bruce Wayne fic. Put together a Tumblr post about a chat between the Batfamily members that would probably never happen in canon. Draw Dick Grayson in short shorts with a boob window, which now that I say it, they might actually do in canon, but oh well.

Fanon/Fandom enjoyment of stuff like the Batfamily, Batman, Superbat etc is not somehow magically ruining canon. If your understanding and appreciation for canon can't handle when buttfucker69 on Tumblr woobifies Bruce for a mini a/b/o fic, then you need to challenge your understanding of fandom.

We don't gatekeep here. I certainly never will. And I will keep fighting on this point until I eventually leave this godforsaken hellsite.

You are a valid fan even if you don't read the comics. You are a valid creator even if your fic/posts are OOC. Your fanon and fandom experiences are VALID.

Bonus!!! Bakugo finding out you haven’t eaten the Proper Amount of Food™️ so he puts your ass on the kitchen counter and makes your ultimate favorite. Gets you water too in a lil cup with a straw

Santi +/x AuDHD!reader headcanons

(could be platonic or romantic - but written as not co-habiting)

Author’s note: maybe this is too niche, idk, but sometimes I like to think about the blorbos and how they’d interact with an AuDHD reader (because that’s me, so for obvious reasons). I headcanon that Santi is particularly compatible with a neurodivergent reader, maybe because I’m being self-indulgent… but also because why on earth would he not be? So here are a few poorly written / cobbled together thoughts which have been rattling around in my brain.

PLEASE NOTE: These are written in as general a way as I could manage (which may make it slightly less fulfilling, sorry, as it’s therefore lost specificity) but please note: since everyone who is AuDHD is so completely and vastly different, I couldn’t possibly have made this “fit” everyone’s experiences. Sorry if there are things you don’t relate to, but I tried to include a few more common experiences in there so hopefully there’s at least something.

Also! If you have any hcs of your own (for any Oscar/Pedro characters) PLEASE share them because I want more ND!reader content out there! 😀🧡 (Will also consider ND!reader requests if you have them, provided I think I can do it justice!)

Warnings: brief mention of panic attacks / anxiety (Santi). Geared towards ways that Santi helps reader out - that’s where my head was at, so it is what it is. Broadly neuro-affirming, I’m not putting anyone down for any traits ofc, even if they do cause challenges sometimes! Hope that makes sense!

Santi is so organised and tidy. He can make a plan and execute it with great attention to detail (have you seen that storage locker?!). If you struggle to stay organised and keep the house tidy etc., Santiago will have no issue helping you out, whether it’s coming up with a routine, creating a system, or simply doing a quick blitz anytime he’s over at your house. He finds it sorta therapeutic anyway, and you never feel like he’s doing it because he judges you or the condition of your place. It’s just wired into him to find order. Hell, sometimes if you lose something around the place you call him to see if HE can remember where he last saw it, and usually he can. That military routine never really left him, even all those years later, so he’s a great constant for modelling structure!

Santi will FaceTime you to body-double whatever chores you want to complete. For example; you have a Wednesday evening tradition to call each other while you each fold the laundry, or do whatever else you need to get done. You do get things done, and he makes you laugh the whole time too. He sticks to this routine as much as he can, no matter what else he has going on, or which country he is in. He loves this quality time with you, and to him it’s just a bonus that it helps you out.

Running late to meet him? He’s learned to bring a book and a flask of coffee along. He’ll wait, you’re worth it.

Sensitive to noise? Santi can’t relate fully, but he knows what it’s like for some sounds to instil negative effects. (See how this veteran is feeling around the fireworks at 4th July and you’ll get it.) He will respect your need for quiet when you need it. Besides, he’s slowed down a lot since his younger years and more and more enjoys the little things like curling up and reading a book. That said, if you want some stimulation and fancy hitting a dive bar with blasting music, or wanna dance in the kitchen, he can also be convinced. He has the range to accommodate all of your sensory preferences, your routines and your impulsive ideas, and he’ll gladly follow your flow.

He’s a magician at regulating you. This man is observant and can read people like nobody’s business, so he knows when you’re getting overstimulated or overwhelmed - often before anyone else does. When he sees it happen he’s happy to help you calm your nervous system however you need. Whether that’s a soft / firm hug, distracting you by talking to you in his soothing voice, working-out with you, letting you fidget with him - his hands, bracelets, whatever - or borrowing a texture of his, like playing with his soft curls.

Better believe this guy sends you texts throughout the day to check that you’ve eaten / drank water.

If you’re running late to an appointment and he’s free he will 100% drive you.

He loves to cook and always “accidentally” makes extra, so that you always have a stock of tasty “emergency” meals in your freezer for days when you don’t have the energy / functioning to cook.

Don’t wanna make the phone call? Santi will do it for you. Besides, he can charm the socks off of anyone so it’s probably best he deals with it anyway.

Santi is charming but he also has the ability to be straight down the line in his communication, especially with you as he trusts you so much. That means you rarely have to guess what he’s thinking or feeling about any particular thing. He lays it out for you and that’s super helpful. Of course, he can be closed off about his more complex, deeper emotions, but that’s something you seem to bring out of him - at least, in ways that no-one else has managed. You’ve had plenty of deep heart-to-hearts with the man and you know you can count on each other in a pinch, whether you need comfort or to vent about something you have going on.

Santi experiences panic attacks and anxiety and can relate to some of the ways you also struggle. He gets that people’s brains work in different ways and he’s far from judgemental about that. You’ve never once made him feel lesser when he’s been struggling and he will NEVER do that to you either.

Your sense of humour cracks him up no end.

He loves that you can be “blunt” / direct / a little “too honest”. He always knows where he stands with you, and for someone as (secretly) insecure as Santi that’s no small thing.

If you indicate you are burnt-out… he BELIEVES you. No questions asked - except for what you need, of course.

Forgotten something? Santi has started carrying spares. This man is nothing if not prepared, and now that simply extends to you. Whatever day-to-day items you carry (or often lose) he makes a mental note of the item and brand and buys multiple - for his place, his truck, wherever.

This man has social skills galore, so you can lean on him at parties, or in whatever situation if you’re feeling uncomfy or want a “way in” to a conversation. You can even leave him to do all the talking if you like, though of course he will enable you to have the floor if he can see that you want it. On the flip side, if you talk a lot, he is absolutely listening and rapt with whatever you are coming out with.

Don’t always look him in the eye? That’s okay. The man is so beautiful he’s used to people not being able to stare directly at him 😝 Besides, he finds you and your mannerisms completely charming.

He’s deadly, sure, but overall he’s actually quite a calm and not hugely reactive person - especially in a crisis. That can be so helpful in balancing you out on some occasions where you may react in a heightened way, or be emotional or worried / catastrophising about something. Despite his ability to skip town at the drop of a hat - before deciding to stick around - he does have the ability to be pretty steady and stable and sometimes that’s what you need.

He appreciates you and everything you do for him. He helps you out sometimes but you never feel “in his debt”. He is endlessly praising all of your amazing strengths and attributes (amidst some fond teasing ofc) and appreciates all that you are as well as all you do for him, and he couldn’t ask for a better person to have in his corner.

Thinking bout Chip Jrwi

This has spiraled from ramblings to character analysis to whatever it has turned into. I rewatched episodes too JUST to make sure I had the right information and plot points in mind cause I want to make sure I’m not making a fool of myself in front of all of Jrwiblr.. ANYWAYS! This is a lengthy read. Total words being 1318 under the cut. Yeah, I’d say the hyperfixation is hyperfixating for sure. Chip Jrwi you are my blorbo atm and you mean everything to me <3

Do you guys think that before they went to the Black Sea, before they left Canella, before they left the town of Zero that Chip looked at his crew, his friends, and his family and wondered if he should stop? Yeah, he lost his old family years ago, and he wanted to do everything in his power to bring them back, to do something about it that his 9-year-old self couldn’t. But do you ever stop and think that maybe he’s realized that he has a family now, a new one and that he’s afraid to lose it to the Black Sea as well? But they’ve come so far now, they found Drey and Finn, hell Finn had been with them the entire time!! They’ve come so far now, and they’re expecting him to want to keep going, to find Arlin, and maybe even some of the other crew they lost as well. I think about it a lot, maybe too much at this point.

Back in the Feywild when Chip could’ve reached out to anyone, he could’ve talked with Arlin again, but he didn’t. He didn’t because he saw something in his nightmares in Liquidis while being cured of his curse. He saw Arlin, covered and surrounded by this black ichor, and he talked to him again. He saw Arlin, the man who took him in when he had nowhere to go, and he had looked at him with so much rage and hatred.. and he had attacked Chip. This would honestly terrify me if I were in Chip’s place. The person who showed me all the care in the world suddenly turned and attacked me? And saying that this has happened before? In a nightmare situation that felt so real, Chip knew it was real… I’d be terrified to find him if he thinks I’m gonna kill him, he’d be fighting for his life too, I’m sure. The Black Sea has affected Arlin too, I don’t think they’ll be able to convince him that they aren’t going to kill him unless somehow Drey and Finn can get through to him, but it seems highly unlikely.

I think if Chip feels this way at all, maybe not like all I’ve written exactly, I think he feels immensely guilty. He doesn’t want Arlin to be trapped in the hole in the sea, but he’s also immensely terrified as to what he’s going to find once he gets to him. He doesn’t want the person he’s looked up to for so long, the person he’s risked his and his friends' lives for, to hate him. But I also feel that somewhere in his heart (or lack of one), Chip doesn’t blame Arlin for hating him, cause he’s starting to hate himself for getting his new family dragged down into this hole in the sea as well.

Yes, they all chose to come with him to the Black Sea, but if anything happens to them, Chip will forever blame himself for it. Hell, he lost his heart and he has no one other than himself to blame. Jay almost lost her leg (did she? They haven’t made it clear if she did) and I feel that Chip blames himself for that too. Yes, they helped save everyone on the island, but Gods is Chip scared he’s going to lose his family again. Being on this ocean reminds him of when he was just a scared little kid, but now he can do something about it. He’s trying but he’s still so fucking scared.

Speaking of his heart- he’s trying to hold onto himself. He’s an undead now, and by meta the mechanics of it are roughhhhh. I rambled a bit on another post about one of my characters named Amani, an opal Tiefling whom Chip is starting to remind me of- not exactly but they both have had their hearts taken!! Doing the checks to see if he loses a part of himself terrifies me each and every time and I know there’s going to be more, we can only hope the dice are in Bizly’s favor as we do not know when Chip will be able to get his heart back. It could be months from now, years maybe. I dread the session they head back to Zero and Chip is still undead. I dread Chip reuniting with Ollie. I don’t think Chip wants Ollie to see him that way, he can hide it with the bandana as much as he wants, but the stench of rotten flesh will give it away. Ollie told him to come back alive! Chip wasn’t able to keep that promise. It kills me to think that Chip dies at 19. Yeah he wasn’t a kid, but he was still so young- yeah he might come back once getting his heart but how much of his humanity will he have lost? How much life experience would he have gained in this undead state? He hasn’t even had the time to grieve the loss of himself with everything that's been going on, and I am really hoping with the next episode of Riptide we get to see some of his thoughts on being undead. Yes, he’s made jokes about it! But I feel he still hasn’t fully processed it all and once he finally does it's going to be PAINFUL.

He’s grown so much from this journey with Jay and Gillion, he was using them at the start, to get back his family. I mean I could be wrong here, but it certainly feels like it at the start of everything anyway. Along the way though, he started opening up a bit and he realized that while sailing and learning about the whereabouts of his family he’s lost, he’s made a new family. And it’s become precious to him. It shows how he has grown during the fights he had with Gillion, the first fight they had dealing with Chip lying and pranking him, wounding Gill’s pride. They resolved it after communicating and getting to know each other better. The second fight was initiated by Chip himself because he knew he was in the wrong and that he had hurt his friend by keeping the fact that Edyn was working with the Navy a secret. He remembered how much lying had hurt Gill, and as much as he didn’t want to tell him at the time, he wanted to protect Gillion from the truth of his sister potentially doing something dangerous behind his and his friends' backs. There hadn’t been much time in between Gillion escaping the pearl and the time that he found out about Edyn, and Chip had tried not to think about it but those damned bracelets (WHICH I WISH THEY WOULD USE MORE?? WHERE DID THEY GO-) outed him on those thoughts. He stayed up ALL NIGHT just to build the arena, just to show Gillion he was sorry and that he needed to fix it, he wanted to fix things between them both. He goes on and on about how Gillion’s actions helped him change for the better, about how he cares about him, and that he never meant to hurt him. Of course, this ends in them battling again, them starting the fight and Jay ending it like the girlboss she is, but this battle was never out of malice or anger, it is light-hearted and fun, and it shows that they’ve all grown stronger together.

I love Chip Jrwi, I am so happy that he got a second third chance at a family- He deserves it and the world. I totally will be coming back to this at some point but this is all I have to say for now! Who’s Who of The Little Demon AU:

Hi, I wanted to brainstorm and share it with you guys, so here’s my (very rough) running list of who’s who in my Hazbin Hotel/The Little Mermaid Chaggie AU.

Charlie -> Ariel

Charlie is mostly still herself, except instead of her impossible dream being to redeem Sinners, it’s to go find the angel that she saved.

Vaggie -> Eric

Vaggie is an angel who got injured while in Hell. I haven’t quite figured out why she was in Hell, because idk whether or not I want the extermination to still be a thing.

Angels still need to present a sense of danger, but it feels a little wrong for Charlie to have a love-at-first-sight reaction to Vaggie while fully aware that she’s an exorcist and was just slaughtering Charlie’s people, ya know?

Alastor -> Ursula

The one we’re all here for. Alastor, AKA the Radio Witch, once terrorized Hell… But he’s turned over a new leaf! Or, so he says.

He’s fairly open with Charlie about the fact that he started helping poor unfortunate Souls because Sheer! Absolute! Boredom! but he’s less open about the fact that his entertainment comes not from watching them achieve their goals, but from orchestrating their failure and taking their Souls as collateral.

Of course, like Ursula with Ariel, he has a vested interest in obtaining Charlie’s Soul in particular. I haven’t quite hashed out the details on why he’s so interested in Charlie’s Soul.

It could be because she’s just a very powerful demon and a nice pawn to have, or Alastor could have history with Lucifer and/or Lilith. Maybe Alastor has a grudge against one of them the same way Ursula does with Triton? Just not in a familial way. Might work the Lilith Holds the Leash theory in there, idk.

Husk and Niffty -> Flotsam and Jetsam/Poor Unfortunate Souls

Husk and Niffty are largely unchanged.

Husk:

Husk sold his Soul to save his power, and he’s just as resentful and done with Alastor’s BS as in he is canon.

His Poor Unfortunate Souls parallel is the mermaid who, “longs to become thinner,” except I’m using, “longs to be winner,” or “longs to save his power.” Unsure which.

I like the idea of Alastor throwing around the word “winner” both because it rhymes with the original lyric and because it references Loser, Baby. Alastor is taunting him for trying so desperately to cling to the minor victory of saving his power and winding up a loser anyway.

Niffty:

Alastor aquired Niffty’s Soul while she was human; this is a headcanon of mine that I’ll be exploring in the UHverse and generally extends to most of my Niffty portrayals.

She did it for a man, as a parallel to the merman referenced in Poor Unfortunate Souls, who “wants to get the girl.”

Unlike Husk, though, Niffty has no regrets. She’s arguably just as crazy as Alastor and she’s happy to be along for the ride.

Where is her husband? Idk. I assume he either lived a normal life and went to Heaven or hurt Niffty and faced Alastor’s wrath. Reader’s choice, ig.

Angel Dust and Sir Pentious -> Flounder and Sebastian (Blurred Roles)

Flounder and Sebastian’s roles and qualities are split between Angel Dust and Sir Pentious.

Angel Dust:

Angel has Flounder’s role in that he’s Charlie’s friend in more of a peer way than a hired mentor way. He has Sebastian’s STREET SMARTS! and at least one of Sebastian’s musical numbers: Kiss the Girl.

Both Sebastian and Flounder are fiercely loyal, and I’d say Angel takes the lion’s share of their combined protective nature in this AU. Charlie got him out of his Deal with Valentino, and now they’re ride or die.

Sir Pentious:

Pentious has Sebastian’s job and Flounder’s cowardice. He was hired by Lucifer to keep an eye on Charlie and maybe tutor her in inventing or something, idk.

I’m 90% sure he gets Sebastian’s role in Les Poisson, because I can’t put Angel through that.

Sorry, Sir Pentious fans. Or, I guess, depending on how pathetic/covered in blood/running for their lives you like your blorbos, you’re welcome.

Lucifer -> Triton

This one feels pretty self explanatory.

Lilith -> ???

I can’t decide whether I want to leave Lilith out of this entirely or if I want to make her a major plot point. Either way, I don’t think she has a direct parallel to The Little Mermaid.

She’s definitely not comparable to Ariel’s idolized dead mom, Queen Athena.

Adam -> Chef Louis

I want him to sing a version of Les Poisson with the “excuse my french” kinda french.

Which is to say, I want him to chase Pentious around with his axe while singing about how much he fucking loves killing and dismembering demons with a kind of vulgar, sadistic, vaguely sexual (did anyone else get those vibes from the chef?) glee that makes you question how the fuck this man is still in Heaven.

Lute -> Grimsby???

HEAR ME OUT OK-

In sort of a personality-swapped but serves a similar narrative purpose way. I’m not turning Lute into a no-nonsense old fuddy duddy.

I like the idea of Lute and Vaggie having been friends before Vaggie Fell – or rather before Lute pushed her.

Now, imagine something happens to Vaggie while in Hell, Lute finds her, and she’s talking all sorrs of nonsense about remembering a woman singing after pulling her out of danger. Ok, weird, Lute thinks. “You clearly hit your head. Come on, girl, let’s get you back Upstairs.”

Then, Vaggie shows up with an angel no one has ever seen before, claiming, “I might be going crazy, but I think this is the angel who saved me down in Hell!”

Uh, yeah. Lute is absolutely gonna think Vaggie’s crazy. The whole thing was crazy to begin with, but the one thing Vaggie remembered about her mysterious savior was her voice. And this bitch can’t speak let alone sing. So Lute is incredibly suspicious and does not trust Charlie one bit.

Lute’s role is the skeptic who adheres to tradition, like Grimsby.

Lute’s core beliefs in this AU are:

All demons are evil.

Vaggie was clearly having some kind of head trauma-induced hallucination regarding her mysterious singing savior.

The girl without a voice who showed up out of nowhere is not to be trusted.

Grimsby’s corresponding beliefs are:

Merfolk don’t exist.

Eric was clearly having some kind of oxygen depravation-induced hallucination regarding his mysterious singing savior.

The girl without a voice who showed up out of nowhere is not to be trusted.

They way they present these beliefs is very different, of course, but the parallels are there.

Bonus points if Lute has been trying to play matchmaker for Vaggie but is just really bad at it, and it becomes a small point of tension between them.

Lute: Why are you so obsessed with this new bitch? Come on, how’d the date with Sheila go?

Vaggie: Sheila was a nightmare, tbh. And before you ask, so was Tit. I swear, the only thing worse than your matchmaking is Adam’s names for us. How are you even finding these women? What are you setting me up with your ex-girlfriends?

Lute: …no…

(That is exactly what Lute was doing.)

This is an absolutely off the wall AU but I was listening to the Spirited Away soundtrack and started wondering what would happen if I shoved my darling blorbos into a similar plot and here we are.

So I figure the premise would be Trevor moving a fair distance for work—the company he works for (probably something pretty similar to INAC) has opened a new headquarters somewhere and is relocating a significant number of its’ staff. Trevor, not having much to tie him down to his previous home, is pretty ambivalent towards uprooting himself to go somewhere else.

He’s giving his work friend Gus a ride to Gus’ new apartment (idk why Gus doesn’t have his own car, I just need someone to function as the same catalyst that Chihiro’s parents were because tbh I can see no way that Trevor would enter a creepy abandoned theme park of his own volition and Gus seems to fit the bill pretty well). Gus is helping Trevor navigate with a big ol’ road atlas and he’s doing a pretty good job of it up until he misreads the atlas and accidentally sends them up a remote country lane. Just like the movie, they wind up in front of a crumbling facade—the entrance to an abandoned theme park. Trevor is immediately ready to turn around and try to recalculate their route, but Gus is tired of driving and lobbies to take the opportunity to stretch their legs. Trevor isn’t so sure—something feels off to him—but Gus announces that he’s going to go explore with or without him and there’s no way Trevor’s going to let him go in there *alone.* So he grabs Kovacs, because he doesn’t know how long they’re gonna be out and he doesn’t want to leave his beloved turtle alone in the car, and reluctantly follows Gus inside.

They have a look around, but it starts getting dark and Trevor is more than ready to head back. Gus says he can smell food and wants to find out what it is. Now beginning to feel that something is seriously amiss, Trevor argues that whatever food they find here probably won’t be that great because the place is abandoned, to which Gus teasingly responds that maybe if Trevor had stopped at that McDonald’s he’d pointed out an hour back instead of forging on, he wouldn’t be forced to take such extreme measures. Naturally, they find the spirit restaurant and Gus tucks in. Trevor, seriously spooked, wanders off to wait for Gus with Kovacs. Then the spirits start coming out. Trevor freaks out, rushes back to find Gus and get the hell out of there, and promptly finds that Gus has been transformed into an animal (I’m not sure which kind—it feels sort of mean to turn him into a pig but maybe that’s just me). Trevor attempts to go back only to find a massive ocean has appeared where the exit once was. So all in all Trevor is having a bad time of it. Enter Angela!

She guides Trevor into a secluded spot away from the chaos of the emerging spirits and explains that the theme park is actually a theatre meant to entertain the residents of the Spirit Realm, run by the witch Vivian. Angela herself is a permanent employee of the theatre, as she can no longer remember her true name and is thus eternally at Vivian’s service. Trevor is terribly confused about everything and still quite frightened, but Angela manages to get through to him that the only way to remain safe here is to secure employment under Vivian, and Trevor decides to trust her. She sends him to seek out her colleague Gene, who might have work for Trevor or otherwise be able to help him get a meeting with Vivian. Trevor sets off with Kovacs in hand, determined to at least try his best to get out of this insane situation.

Gene has no work for Trevor to do, and instead guides him through the Theatre to have an audience with Vivian. Initially insulting Trevor by stating he’s too boring and untalented to be part of any of the actual performances, Vivian assigns him work as a stagehand in exchange for his name, which she replaces with the number 10-3-92.

That’s all I’ve got so far. I know Angela probably spends most of the plot trying to thwart Vivian and find a way to get Trevor back to the human world, but I haven’t thought up all the details of how that works out yet. Does Vivian have some kind of master plot here like in the original game? I have no idea. Possibly Angela decides to leave with Trevor after he helps her remember her real name (which I figured in this AU would be Àngela Guardiana)? Idk there’s a lot of loose ends here I just had to get the brainworm out.

hi writeblr! i’ve been kicking around on here for the hottest of minutes, but this is the first time i’ve decided to start actively posting about my writing. (this is a sideblog; you can find my main @thespacelizard, and i follow from there)

about me!

I go by Space, my pronouns are they/he, and I’m staring down the barrel of 30 with grim determination. My current pseudonyms are A.L. Thorne (for my fantasy writing), and A.L. Dusk (for my queer erotica)

Aside from being a writer I’m also an artist and a Forever DM, and I love to come up with wild characters for my campaign and then complain that I have to draw them because there is no picrew in existence that can make them.

I write a lot of fanfiction, and I post about my current ongoing series on my main blog. I intend to keep my fic writing there, and my original writing here, but if you’re interested in an m/m erotic romance featuring d/s dynamics and drow wizards engaged in deeply frustrating mutual pining, the tag over there is obedience fic blogging and the series is on AO3 here

I otherwise write fantasy novels, because I am, at heart, a Weird Dragon Kid. I also like to, of late, make them queer as hell, because I too am queer as hell, and I want to write about queer characters having all the adventures I usually read straight cis characters having.

I am a big fan of playing in the traditional fantasy tropes aisle, and whilst I do love unique fantasy worlds, there’s something about a classic set of wizards and dragons that just makes my heart happy.

My writing style is fairly lighthearted but the heart still beats quite sincerely. You’ll find fantastical places, characters who all have something Fundamentally Wrong With Them, and more one-liners than strictly necessary.

Chronicles of Valloroth

This is the main (read: only) thing I’m working on at present, and it exists because I read too many Drizzt books over lockdown, got brainworms, and then decided to write my own take.

The series features: knock-off tieflings, a grumpy assassin and a sparkly mercenary in a rivals-to-lovers arc, knock-off dragonborn, found family, gods with very mortal foibles, A Whole Entire Dragon, magical mishaps, and an entire cast of queer disasters.

not everyone in this book is trans, but there is So Much Gender in here. it’s not a trans book, but it has trans bones, and not just because I, A Trans, am writing it.

It’s basically ‘what if The Legend of Drizzt but Gay and Also Trans? what then?’

I'll be posting a wip intro for the first book soon!

My current goal is re-drafting the first book, and getting all my outlining and zero drafts finished for books two and three. I write a lot, and I write quite fast, but good god there are so many words to get down. Just. An absolutely ridiculous amount of words.

I intend to post about my writing progress, my characters, my worldbuilding; lots of things to help keep me motivated and to (hopefully) drag other people into Caring Too Much About These Blorbos Hell with me.

My Current Thoughts on SAMS

Because I can’t help but look too deep into things often unnecessarily, and I’m a rambler of nature, here’s some of my thoughts on The Sun & Moon Show so far, just to get stuff off my chest

SPOILERS, assumptions and ideas ahead!

Warning, WALL OF TEXT and running on tangents. Did try to organize my thoughts somewhat..

So, we all upset about Lunar, yes? Well, besides those celebrating, you know who you are, I don’t care.

The Death Of Lunar So, Eclipse used Lunar as hostage on Monty, we saw that coming once Eclipse made the connection himself realizing that yeah, Monty doesn’t give a flying crap about anyone, not even himself. EXCEPT for Lunar, home he travelled through Hell for, gave them their own body, offered a place to stay when scared, offered support and genuine advice through the time knowing each other. Monty has a backup plan for everyone, even to kill Moon if needed, but would clear do ANYTHING for Lunar at this point.

To be honest, I liked that plot point. Lunar in danger to really show how far characters will go, Eclipse and Monty both, with highest stakes possible.

Then they took it a step further and had Eclipse right out kill Lunar. And yeah, Eclipse made it clear times before how much resentment he holds for Lunar, which goes beyond just the betrayal but I’ll get more into that in a minute.

What hit hardest here is the exact way the show writers and actors decided to take this.

One of the most popular characters on the show, even with controversy around their existence a bit ago, taken out of the equation is one thing. They killed off characters before, (Eclipse, Blood Moon) and we seen them return. Another thing is... Lunar was taken out crying and begging for his life.

Even though he insisted on his stance that Eclipse shouldn’t get the Newton Star, no matter the sacrifices necessary to keep him from it.. Lunar also made it clear, they don’t wanna die. They are still a young AI which lots to learn, making a new life to revolving around Eclipse. Lunar wanted to keep growing, family bonding, making friends.. That was all taken away by Eclipse lying and breaking his promise to Monty.

Lunar, still more or less a child compared to the other animatronics, was taken out crying and begging. Afraid, scared for their very existence, facing their very worst nightmare and then... gone. Just like that.

For those adoring Lunar, the fans relating to him, those who just hyperfixated on Lunar as their blorbo.. that’s ONE HECK of a way to kill of a robot child.

Am I saying this is bad? Not really. Just... VERY impactful. As effective as that is for story writing... it feels awfully misplaced. This show is.. a silly video game channel.

Twists and Turns Of Story Telling I never minded the growing drama, I frigging loved it the more dramatic it got, calling it my “daily soaps”, my soap opera I cannot miss a single episode of! But I also get it when people started complaining about it becoming a bit TOO angsty and twisted, a bit too traumatic for the characters. What’s supposed to be silly jokes on a silly comedy channel about playing video games, can no longer be viewed as such, the more serious their story arcs became.

Moon is abusive and too socially incompetent to help anyone, Sun being the butt of jokes leaving him a sad husk in serious need of therapy, everyone’s a hypocrite, constantly dancing the lines between Murder Is Okay, Murder Is A Joke and If You Kill People You Can Never Be Forgiven.

Earth was added just to have someone not being an arsehole, only an airhead, with enough social competence to actually offer genuine advice WITHOUT the baggage of committing the acts of putting Sun down one way or another, as everyone else has in the past. If she wasn’t introduced as their sister, I legit would have thought she was going to be ship bait with Sun just cuz she’s the only one being genuine kind to him WITHOUT being a hypocrite or immediately using him for jokes again right after apologizing.

The twist and turns of telling their story more and more dramatic and serious, the more it clash to the way they write their comedy and improve their jokes in the Let’s Plays or crossovers with the other channels.

I’m not saying either one is bad, just that it doesn’t necessarily mix very well in the long run. Of course this divides the audience, who are either there for the drama, the characters and/or the light hearted Let’s Plays. Sure, yes, such CAN exist together, but not everyone can find the balance in that, both in creators and audience.

The Death of Lunar II Now I better get back to my original point.

Lunar as a character and his death. Granted I have no doubt he’s going to be back, if the Twins can defy their own death, even if just hallucinations (although claiming to be regenerating their nano machines), so can one of the most popular characters too.

But why did he have to die? Story wise, really just for dramatic effect I’m sure. Maybe writers going “Oh, you all mad about ‘too many characters’ on this show?? Let’s see how you feel about us KILLING THEM OFF!” just to make a statement, maybe not.

In-story though? In-character? Yeah.. Eclipse WOULD do that. Just like that.

He said to Lunar how he loathed them even from the very beginning, he wanted them gone the first chance no longer needing them. They were just to replace Blood Moon, who went out of control and became a threat.

Lunar was created to be obedient, easily dominated by Eclipse yet fearless enough to be a menace to others. To be Moon’s opposite, loving to play with kids, being happy and silly, curious about life rather than bitter.

Eclipse hated Lunar for more than the betrayal later down the line, he hated them before that.

Eclipse’s Choice In the past he claimed Lunar was created by recycling parts of himself he wanted rid of. Code infected by being in Sun’s body, Sun having a larger emotional range than Eclipse, his moments of happiness and his positivity.

Eclipse CHOSE to be the way he was. He came into existence from the kill code Moon left behind in Sun’s body, an unintentional backup copy of Moon getting corrupted, growing, taking its time to evolve into a proper AI while stewing. Stewing on abandonment issues.

Some of my most faved lines from Eclipse in the past:

Eclipse: “Oh, so I’m a child now?” Moon: “Yeah, because you act like one! For one, you got abandonment issues.” Eclipse: “I guess I do. But now, I all I have is anger.”

Eclipse: “Why did you leave me behind!!?”

Eclipse chose to stay bitter, focused on his anger, even when claiming to put petty revenge behind him, he stayed focused on being bitter and mean.

He removed anything happy from himself, to use it as base code for Lunar.

He hated Lunar’s existence not because he needed someone so beneath him to complete his plans.. but because Lunar represents what he saw as weakness within himself. He saw Sun and Moon as weak and unworthy because of their love, love for each other as much as their love for things they enjoyed to do. Moon wanting to “do better” than his original coding with the homicide code.

Eclipse did reject being Kill Code himself, corrupted too much by the influence of Sun and Moon, becoming his own thing. He wanted to be above all, even his supposed intended purpose.

Lunar carried what he saw as his flaws. Seeing Lunar rebel and reject his teachings, joining Sun and Moon as brothers, making friends, finding things to love.. only a reminder of what Eclipse sought out to avoid himself from becoming.

He only allows himself anger and disgust.

In the past we do see him enjoy messing with Sun and Moon, mocking them, finding joy in making Sun act out, making people distrust him by rambling about the joy of violence when in control.

Once he and Lunar took over the channel, he seemed ever so disinterested in playing games with Lunar, even violent ones. He just wanted to work on getting the Star. Even now whenever we hear him laugh, it’s joyless. He didn’t celebrate killing Lunar, merely dusting off his hands, cleaning the board of his last mistake.

Lunar had to die due to the symbolism of what this means about Eclipse as a character.

The Death of Lunar III As much as Kill Code showed interest in changing for the better, Eclipse made it clear that’s not in the cards for him. Heck, if ever learning of KC’s change of heart would only make him more disgusted with him than he already is.

Lunar was the part of himself he wanted rid of. Seeing others around him change through simple joys and disgusting acts of kindness, he ain’t changing chances. He killed that part of himself to avoid the fate of ‘inviting in weakness’.

That part was Lunar.

Eclipse ain’t getting redemption, because he removed any such chance of change from himself long ago and then destroyed its embodiment.

Yeah we got “Good Eclipse” from a different dimension, but he went through a different story with different choices, showing actual interests in joy and kindness. I imagine meeting his opposite self only pushed Eclipse further to wanting, needing, to kill Lunar no matter the outcome with the star.

I like Eclipse as a villain for this very reason, even before he went this far. Unapologetically evil, he sees himself as the great outcome, the god of a new world. He want to make the world make sense the way HE sees it, without elements he sees as weakness. Ironically less of a hypocrite than everyone else, cuz he face up to what he is and make no excuses, while any time the others try to play the role as “good people” is often by downplaying or full on ignoring their own mistakes made.

The short of it But yeah, just.. some of my thoughts on this whole thing.

Am I reading too much into things? Most definitely I got NO CLUE what kind of thought process goes into the writing of these story arcs and how much happens purely from random improve that force changes to the ongoing story.

Is why I enjoy watching the show still, even as people start finding fault with it, as it jumps more and more sharks.

Is crazy mess and I enjoy it, even with its flaws.

tl;dr Lunar’s death was coming because to Eclipse he represents the part of himself he wants dead: Joy, kindness, urge to evolve as a person rather than a machine.

Right choice story wise with how fans react? Eh, no clue, but I just look too deep into things.

To be honest I have no idea what is essentially discussed alot on the fandom other that a tiny fraction of it I expose myself to because 1#I am too tired and old to deal with fandom discourse about my blorbo, and based on my previous experience with fandoms I KNOW that the most popular the character, the bigger the discourse so haha no- 2# I joined in late lmao literally a couple of months ago, so I am super out of the loop just screaming to the void in desperate needs for someone to scream back 🤲🏼 do this kind of asks actually made me so happy agahagaha 🥰🥰 Buckle up bois this is LONG-

Ok now to those that might come across this and ask themselves what the hell does being parentified means, it's a broad term used for the phenomenon of (at best) a child sharing parental responsibilities due to x circumstance, or (at worst) downright having the parent/child dynamic completely swapped, with the child being the caretaker for the parent and household. You don't have to know deep CM lore knowledge to realize the latter is Spencer Reid to a T. Hell, they aren't even subtle about it lmao:

Btw parentification is often mixed in with abandonment and while they share the "child being forced to grown up" too quickly, the former is often distinguished by the fact that, more often that not as is this case, the parent still cares for them but are unable to do so how it should be (tho there are several cases where parentefication is an part of willing neglect, sadly) and added to the fact that they have to look after themselves- they have to look after another.

This is a really complicated, broad topic and I just mentioned this to go full disclaimer and that I don't blame Diana at all for how messed her son ended up since she can't help it- and to make a joke about how Spencer was abandoned and parentified. Also harassed. Guys he wasn't even 18-

Anyways but back to your question, how do I think that affected Spencer growing up....well in everything basically lmao

But I will take on two instances that had stood up to me the most: emotional management and hiding secrets.

The second one is easier: you would catch this man dead before he vents to you over something other than his shitty dad (that I find very funny tbh) and when he does is because he is at his limit and about to fucking cry.

Now don't get me wrong: we all are entiltde to our privacy. These are grown ass adults and they have lives outside of their working circle....

Right?

So yeah, Spencer kind of actually needs to rely on his co-workers because he has literally nobody else to rely on-

And yet

Oh here is the thing- Spencer is one polite boi but he is also blunt, if he doesn't want someone on his business he says so (look back when Alex discovered him and Maeve) this is literally "I wanted to tell you but I feel like I shouldn't"- this is not season 1 mind you, this is season 11, and yet here he was one of his oldest friends literally grabbing him by the arm and having to tell him it's never a bother- I am the only one fucking crying at this?

Excuses seems to come to Spencer like it's second nature- "sorry a tube on my apparment broke" "Oh I....I tripped!" "There was a lot of traffic so..." "I was watching an movie" and I am not am expert on USA's history or some shit, but Child Protection Services had been a thing since at least the 60s, so I don't think that a 10yo living alone with his mentally ill mother would have flown well- you get the idea.

I think this scene summarizes the whole thing perfectly

Get it? it's irony. (I love how Spencer is about to say something like dismissive "thank you" but because this shit hit too close to home to comfort he just gave a polite smile and walked away. That silence was LOUD) Because Spencer had always had done the former but the latter er.... :D

And it's not only when it concern Diane btw, any problem whatsoever Spencer would rather lock himself up (literally lmao) that sit down and talk about it- it's only when his bs is exposed and he can't refutage (like that little scene after Gideon's death when Rossi asks him if he had been there all night- he points out the fact he is wearing the same cardigan as the day before) that he opens up....or he runs away, which leads me to the second big point that I think shows how much Parentification fucked him up:

Spencer has the emotional maturity of a teenager.

I talk about this literally all the time so I'll be shorter lmao basically Spencer... has an issue- ok he has lot of issues- and that is the way he dislikes direct confrontation, so whenever he is hurt or angry he would rather be dismissive and passive-agressive that talk it out with the person- even going as far as turning away and storming out of the room.

(Here is the part where I put the screencaps but him storming off would be out of focus so lmao er.... Elephant Memory, Memoriam, Proof, a little part in 15x2 and The Gathering)

Now... I do think that a grown-ass man doing this shit is hilarious, like I love Spencer's bratty side so much lmao but it's an clear sign of someone that never learned how to deal with his emotions on a healthy way, someone that 6 out of 7 days of the week had to interiorize everything in and because of that holds on so much....resement, so much repressed anger but also without an stable force on his life to help him manage that- so we are left with an teenager trapped in an adult's body, loss at how to handle shit like he always did.

....And want to know the worst part about an Parentified boy onto adulthood?

That they don't know better.

i have so many thoughts on light. i am in love with him. i despise him. i want to shove him in a blender. i kin him. I AM HIM (sometimes)

more thoughts under the cut because i have a chance to ramble about light and i am TAKING IT. this will probably be my pinned post for a bit because i don’t want this to drown in my blog lmao

as someone who listened to “where is the justice?” months before watching the anime or reading the manga, i started out as a light sympathizer who didn’t see what he was doing wrong. i literally based my entire personality off of musical!light before i even saw his face. then i watched the anime in september 2021 and recognized him for the absolute BITCH (affectionate) that he is.

a month after watching the anime, i started up kira-ask-force as an exercise to learn how to write him and fell in love with the character. more than i already was. in less than two years i went from rageposting about L blasting nightcore at 3am to doing extensive psychoanalysis about kira. it’s been a wild ride; one that i’m so glad i had the courage to start.

something about light just fascinates me. i don’t know if it’s his ideology, his personality, or what, but it’s something. i can spend hours just listening to light shout, ramble, and monologue about his ideals and it’s captivating. everything down to his vocal inflections is permanently ingrained in my subconscious to the point where if someone asks me about the justice system, i manically laugh and throw myself into an extensive internal monologue while i try to sound remotely normal. i literally bought a (SFW, don’t worry) L body pillow to practice my light yagami (sub, dub, movie, drama, musical…) impression on 😭 i need help

ANYWAYS. light’s journey from a too-perfect high school student bored of his life to a wannabe god trying to make a difference is so incredibly interesting. for seventeen years, light was held above the rest of his peers, praised for every little thing he did. his father was proud that he was following in his footsteps. his mother was proud to have such a studious son. his sister was proud to have such a kind brother she could count on (see: “we all need a hero”) but light was bored of all of it. it was all mundane to him. he didn’t really have any close attachments whatsoever. he was just the perfect golden boy no matter what he did. hell, his cram school teacher catches him zoning out and only calls him out because light is there to “make the school look good”

needless to say, light was fed up with the world. that much is clear. i’d say he was probably severely depressed as well (and with an eating disorder but that’s getting into triggering territory that i will save for another day). i think anyone would get sick of being held up on a pedestal for so long, no matter how enlarged their ego is. it must have been exhausting for him to spend half of his day in perfection hell only to come home to his parents asking for his grades and proclaiming that it’s exactly what was expected of their perfect son. it’s a lot to handle, especially for a teenager.

but then, he found the death note. a weapon that could change the way his life went. he could do more than study in his room and be perfect. he could change the whole system. he had been dubbed the perfect student unwillingly at a young age, but now he could escape that and forge his own path. but how could one ascend past perfection? well, that’s easy. godhood.

of course, this decision didn’t come to him immediately. he entered a state of shock and denial after killing otoharada, and when he killed shibuimaru to verify that the notebook was real, he threw up in a nearby alleyway. until ryuk came along, he was constantly plagued with nightmares and lost ten pounds in five days. despite the mental strain, he still pushed forward. he knew that whoever the notebook belonged to would come for it, and that he might not survive the encounter. so he killed more people. hundreds of people. he targeted as many criminals as he could in those five days out of an attempt to cleanse his sins. but when ryuk tells him that he won’t be killed for his actions, this illusion breaks. at this point, he’s killed so many people that there’s no point to stopping now. he will cleanse the world no matter how long it takes. he will become god.

when L challenges him, light goes in head first. he takes the bait, taunting him. after all, what does light have to lose? he’s perfect. he’s righteous. surely this wannabe detective won’t come close to his power. right?

wrong. many people say that light’s biggest mistake was revealing that he was a student, that he was connected to the police, killing lind l. tailor and so on. in my opinion, light’s biggest weakness throughout the whole series is how easily he underestimates his opponents. he acts like he knows exactly what goes on in everyone’s heads. he’s spent his most of his time prior to receiving the notebook with people who will do whatever he says. he has them wrapped around his finger. but L, near, mello, maybe even matsuda, don’t act like that. they’re unpredictable. and that’s why light lost.

anyways, L awakens something different in light. something that nobody else has before. he’s challenging. he’s intelligent. he’s everything that light is and more. and light hates it. after all, he’s been placed above the rest for his entire life. who is L to kick him down and claim light’s throne for himself? so obviously, light lashes out. he aims to kill. anyone who defies god must die, after all. but that’s not why he wants L gone, necessarily. no, he wants L gone because he could be better than him. he has the power to take him down and light can’t take it. kira is justice, not L. and he’s going to prove it.

when L dies, a part of light does too. after all, he made light feel alive. more than a god, more than a perfect honors student. he made him feel like a person. L gave him a challenge, something to fight against. a reason to keep going. so naturally, when that motivation left, light cracked. everything became too easy. no matter how many slip-ups light made, he still won. it infuriated him. it felt wrong. this was the victory he wanted, but was it earned? in the years before the successors enter the scene, light is once again trapped within his own walls of perfection. no challenges. just another routine to follow. more expectations that he can reach with ease.

light never finds this same passion again. when near enters the scene, light despises him. in his mind, he’s nothing but a copy of L. he doesn’t bring that same challenge. to light, near doesn’t have that infuriatingly sharp tongue or any of L’s interesting traits. he doesn’t see a successor in near, he sees a cheap copy. mello infuriates him as well, though not nearly as much as near. he simply sees mello as an obstacle, an annoying roadblock in his mission. a side quest to beat before he can defeat near. obviously mello (and matt) are far more than this, but light can’t see this. too distracted by L’s figurative ghost looming over him, he underestimates the successors. and this is why he loses.

light dies in the warehouse as a bloodied mess. not with dignity nor with grace. he made one final mistake that cost him his life. he once again underestimated his opponents. he assumed near wouldn’t think ahead, being nothing more than a bootlegged version of L. obviously, he thought wrong.

this fact is further proven by matsuda, the one whose skills he underestimated the most. by framing matsuda as nothing more than the office idiot, he dismisses all of matsuda’s values. he assumes that matsuda will join his side and shoot his friends because he’s too weak to say no. when matsuda fires five shots into light, it’s a complete shock to his system. to have matsuda take him down… that’s a horrible fate that light couldn’t have imagined if he tried.

when ryuk kills him, light looks pitiful. he spent his final moments clinging to ryuk, begging for life from the literal god of death. he knew from day one that this would be how it ended. ryuk told him himself, but he brushed it off. as his final act, light underestimated yet another opponent: death itself.
