Hiro Tanaka had always been a fun-loving and kindhearted fae. Although he had been raised from a young age to take over his father’s stead as a minor lord of the court, Hiro has never been one to discriminate. Maybe it was because he was the product of an affair with the Thorn who had been sent to seduce to his father, but he had never been one to judge other’s on that of their generics alone. Growing up, he used to go out of his way to be kind to the indentured servants his strict father had brought to their household. He’d often sneak them his monthly allowance or sneak off into the servants quarters after dark to check on them when his father made a big show as to discipline them. But, Hiro didn’t just sneak down to the staff’s quarters solely out of his own generosity, but also to stay out of his father’s wife’s way. The woman always looking at him with a gaze of distain or muttered about how he would disgrace their family and, maybe, to some degree she was right.
The Tanaka family was known far and wide for their business in liquor. From sake to beers to wines, their family trades and deals in it all. It is rare not to find a bottle of Tanaka wine at a local restaurant or tavern even in the most far away courts. Not to mention, they run and operate one of the most notorious bars within the Summer Court called Venom, where rumor has it, speakeasy style backrooms can be rented out to be used for everything and anything from gambling to a place where nobles or outlaws can discuss politics in secret. And although, Hiro took to the night life, his father questioned if he truly had the backbone to take over his position in Court. Only, Tadashi Tanaka would be around long enough to find out. He was already an older fae by the time Hiro was born and, by the time Hiro was reaching adulthood, Tadashi passed away and, as Hiro stepped up to the plate, what his step mother had been so worried about came to fruition- change.
First, Hiro released all of the servants of their debts. He offered each and everyone of them the opportunity to stay and work for him where he would treat them as one of his own. But, if they would prefer to go, he would offer them a sum of money to help them off on their way. Next, he step his step mother up in a small, but nice estate of her own along with his younger half siblings of his step mother who were also reaching of age.
Then he went to work, immersing himself into the trade his father had spent years cultivating and become more and more akin to the nightlife, leaning on the servants whom to decided to stay to help guide him. Hiro was goofy and a bit too dorky at times for his own good, but luckily he had people he could fall back on to help keep him accountable and the one person who helped him the most out of anyone was Kali Jelani.
She was a human whom he had recently hired and one thing quickly led to another and before Hiro knew it, he had knocked her up. His father had always preached about taking responsibility and yet, he had let himself become careless and he worried how it might effect Kali. He wanted to make things right. He wanted the beautiful woman whom had given him so much strength to know that he would step up and so he asked her to marry him. A minor lord and human would have been a huge scandal, but he didn’t care. Only, she did. Kali didn’t want to hurt his reputation and hoped that this way she might be able to give her baby a better life, so she turned him down. She would continue to work for him and they would keep their baby a secret until their daughter was born. No one wouldn’t have to know but the servants and then they could pretend that the child was the product of him and another fae so that their daughter would have to worry about her human heritage being a problem.
Only things didn’t quite go as planned. Kali had complications with the pregnancy and ended up passing not shortly after childbirth and, after her passing, the young fae felt lost. Hiro didn’t know the first thing that came with raising a daughter and with impending War to come, Hiro is afraid that his kid could be used against him. Because of this, Hiro is very secretive when it comes to his family. He loves his family more than anything and will do anything to protect them which is why very few even know of their relation. He rarely invites people over, preferring to travel to different locations than to invite people into his abode.
Hiro is still laid back and warmhearted, but he keeps people more at a distance than he did before. After the deaths in his life, he prefers not to be too involved in politics, believing that even fae’s lives can be easily taken from you as is. He’s not a fan of war and cares little about which courts are rivals and which are not, often spending his free time amongst the merchants or in the Neutral territory, feeling that the different courts’ energies would be better spent preparing for the Solstice than being at each other’s throats.
