Chasing Dragons by The_Sinking_Ship @the-sinking-ship

Draco can think of only one way to outclass his pleat-front-khaki-wearing politician ex, and that’s by making headlines with an obvious upgrade. And who better to upstage the cheating bastard than the Saviour of the World, Harry Potter himself? Sure, Potter is a little rough around the edges in ripped jeans, a rumpled tartan shirt, and a permanent scowl. Draco reckons a haircut and a shave wouldn’t hurt, either. But Potter is also in need of a Healer willing to keep his secrets, and Draco is just the man for the job. It’s a perfectly reasonable exchange. They need only attend a couple parties arm-in-arm, smile nicely for the paparazzi, and tolerate each other long enough to convince everyone they’re smitten. In return, Draco will keep Potter alive and in one piece. But it isn’t long before Draco realises he might be in over his head, because Potter is ten tonnes of trouble packed into a leather jacket, and seems keen on hurtling himself towards death on the back of a flying motorbike. And that says nothing of Potter’s penchant for fire-breathing beasts and things that bite. Ah well, at least they’ll have some fun while it lasts. After all, Draco always did like a bit of danger. They strike up an unlikely friendship, which evolves into an increasingly convoluted scheme, which then snowballs spectacularly out of control into a tangle of lies and blurred lines.

They'd agreed to a fake relationship — in Harry's case, to get the wizarding world to take him off his 'perfect saviour' pedestal, and in Draco's case, just to be given a chance in wizarding society at all — but neither of them expected just how difficult that might really turn out to be. Especially when the stakes grow ever higher, and they both start falling for each other. Just a little bit.

My submission to H/D Fangfest 2022. I could not be more proud of what I accomplished or more grateful to those who helped me beta and edit it (@thebooktopus). It’s a deeply emotional, angsty, violent yet beautiful exploration into what it means to have, lose, and find new faith. What it means to be a god unto yourself. To fall in love with freedom.

This fic is heavily influenced by my own extremely traumatic experiences with religion and growing up in a Pentecostal cult. It does not paint religion in a fond light, so if you are sensitive to that, please be aware.

Ultimately, this is a love story. Between Harry and Draco, between Harry and himself, between both and being alive.

I’m actually relatively new to the fandom and just had a burning question, what are all of the fic fests about?

Like I see things like Mpreg, Trans or Horror fests and I know what those are about but a lot of the ones like Wireless, Candy Hearts, Lights Camera Drarry, H/D Erised, Kill your darlings or even H/D Reverse Bang get me very confused as to what their purpose is.

I’m so sorry if the answer is supposed to be obvious, I promise I’m not trying to be ignorant but I went on the AO3 links to all these fests but I still emerged a little confused (it’s a dark time for my one little braincell, she’s very slow).

Summary:

Excerpt:

“Draco,” Harry says, helplessly tender. He’s still just standing in the doorway. His throat is tight with affection. He isn’t thinking at all. “I adore you.”

Draco goes unnaturally still, looking like he’s been slapped. The wand drops out of his hand and onto the covers, but the sparks continue to twinkle around him. “Don’t lie to me.”

“I didn’t–” Harry pauses as Draco’s response sinks in. He swallows down the words I didn’t mean to say that, and instead makes a choice. “I’m not lying.”

“Don’t lie to me,” Draco repeats, a bit more frantic, curling into himself on the bed. His eyes are impossibly wide and fixed on Harry.

“I do adore you,” Harry says as he moves closer, cautious like he would be with a wounded animal. “In every way you can imagine. I wouldn’t lie to you, Draco. Not about anything, but especially not this.”

“I know.” Draco’s voice is small now, but his eyes haven’t left Harry’s face. “I know you’re not lying. That’s why I’m afraid.”

Harry’s breath catches. He’s never heard Draco admit that before. I’m afraid.

“It’s just me,” Harry reminds him gently. He lowers himself onto the bed in front of Draco, giving him space. “You don’t have to be scared. It’s just me. Nothing has to change. I know that my feelings are so big, too big most of the time. I know how to handle it, and I’ve already been handling it, so we can just–”

Draco reaches up, buries his hands in Harry’s loose curls, and kisses him.

Harry’s hands come up before he even realizes what’s happening, cradling Draco’s delicate jaw. Warmth pools in his stomach at the feeling of Draco’s smooth, cold lips, and then Harry realizes he should kiss back, so he does, insistent and a bit frantic. Draco makes a whimpering sound and topples over backwards, bringing Harry with him, and they’re still kissing.

“Hold on,” Harry gasps, pulling away from Draco when his body finally insists that he needs to breathe. His glasses are smudged from Draco’s cheek. “I have to– hah– catch my breath. Just give me a moment. I forgot you don’t need to breathe.” He moves his face to the crook of Draco’s neck, waiting until his lungs are no longer protesting so much. Draco’s body is completely covered by Harry’s, and Harry is hyper aware of it, keeping himself braced on his elbows so he doesn’t accidentally crush his husband.

Harry inhales. They kissed.

Exhale. Draco kissed him.

Draco kissed him first.

Hi hello, I've been reading your work on AO3 and been commenting along. I asked on reddit yesterday about upcoming fests as I feel really inspired to get back into writing ( - it's been a while). And I landed on your tumblr through there! I was wondering in particular about the Owl Post fest in Dec 2022. Are you organising this? I don't know how to find information about how to participate and if that's still possible. Sorry if I'm being a bit dense, it's super early in the morning for me and I can't figure it out somehow :') anyway, would love to hear from you! Thank you for sharing your brilliant writing! Hey there! It's been so lovely getting your comments lately; I just want to start with that! I don't have anything to do with the running of Owl Post, but it is an absolutely lovely and low-stress fest! Unfortunately, their submissions are due tomorrow and the fest begins December 1st. Here is their Tumblr, though, so you can follow the fest and maybe join in next year: Owl Post!

That said, there are a metric ton of HP and also specifically Drarry fests that run year round. Several people have made compilations of fests in the past, like @capiturecs, but I know there are others. Anybody want to link to lists of fests, pretty please?

This is a fraction of the fests that exist, but this year I participated in @hd-fangfest @hd-wireless @hp-bodiceripper and @hdsudsfest just to throw a few out there. But there are so so SO many more!

You could also follow reccers, because odds are they will eventually rec things from specific fests, and that's a great way to learn about what's running and what you might want to get involved in. @sitp-recs is an amazing resource (and incredibly kind person) to follow!

There are also all kinds of Discord groups if you're interested, and they can be a wonderful way to really join the community, make friends, and create a support network around your own writing. The @drarrymicrofic server is one (if you’d like an invite, I can send you one in a DM, but there is the Tumblr community you can follow as well); there's also a much larger server for Drarry too, as well as multitudes of others. Highly recommend!
