made for love s2 thoughts
Hate to say it, but I really do enjoy Byron's character. I was really excited to see him when the showed the six months later part but when that eye twitched I let out the biggest sigh. The whole Zelda the dolphin thing and Jasper thing???? kinda creepy. If there is a another season, I really hope theres more of the nun and the other two people. Please, when they were visiting Alice I lost it! They were so funny. HBO Max originals never miss. Also, just learned that Made for Love is a book!!! (not on kindle unlimited :-/)

Poor Devil - Teaser Trailer
a deleted scene, i think. the only known remnants of this are these screengrabs from the teaser on YouTube. went through all the episodes and didn't see it anywhere?? based on stan's charred body, I assume it was from episode 4. Very unfortunate if it is deleted.
If I missed it and someone can let me know where the full scene is in the show, i'd greatly appreciate it!

Winning Time Season 1 Review
Tumblr media
Hey guys! Dan here and today I'll be reviewing season 1 of the HBO MAX series, Winning time
This is a Biopic series based on the Showtime Lakers from the 80's with Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Paul Westhead, Pat Riley and the owner Dr. Jerry Buss. This show was produced by Adam McKay who has directed notable movies that I enjoy such as Anchorman, Talladega Nights, and The Other Guys. Now keep in mind this is a biopic so while it is based on the Showtime Lakers and the people involved, that doesn't mean everything in the show is done exactly how it was done then. There's always going to be dramatization and exaggerate certain scenes for the sake of the show since this is a drama as well. With that said, lets dive right in.
SPOILERS AHEAD (though you can just google these facts, I'm warning spoilers for the show itself.)
The cast here are a group of talented individuals and the most notable one of this cast is John C. Riley who is best known for his work from Stepbrothers, Wreck it Ralph and my favorite, Check it out! with Dr. Steve Brule. He plays Dr. Jerry Buss in the show and compared to he actual Jerry Buss himself, I'd say John did a decent job bringing him to life. His voice doesn't match up well with Jerry Buss since the actual Buss had a smoother and softer voice while John has more of a raspy and somewhat goofy voice but he still makes the character work and showing the charisma and energy of the actual Dr. Buss. Quincy Isaiah portrayed the legendary Earvin "Magic" Johnson Jr and He definitely gets the charisma and the big white smile of Magic Johnson down well. My only complaint is how he over does it with Magic's Narcissism, I don't claim to known Magic Johnson personally but I felt he overdid it with Magic's need to be liked and the center of attention because I feel maybe Magic was like that to a degree but not this badly. Jason Segel as Paul Westhead was alright, but I felt they made him a real Cuck Beta Male (I know a cringe discord mod thing to say). However I did like his growth in the series, he went from a little quiet assistant coach that does what he's told to a real Head Coach that lead his team to a championship and that was thanks in part to his own assistant coach, Pat Riley. Adrien Brody portrayed Pat Riley who is my favorite character throughout the show and one of the best Coaches the Lakers ever had. Pat Riley was shown to be a washed up NBA player in this show and he rose to the occasion to help Paul and the Lakers to win them a championship as their assistant coach.
The plot for the show itself is again a recreation of the Lakers 1979-1980 season and how it all went down with some minor tweaking here and there to make it more dramatic and entertaining. The show executed it well but there are some things I wish they did different. This is a Basketball biopic series, emphasis on "Basketball", yet we don't really get too many basketball games in the show, we get snip bits here and there as well as practice for one episode, but we only get like maybe a half hour of two major games in that series. This focuses more on the teams personal lives and their demons that they all face. This show doesn't shy from Adult themes such as Sex, Drugs, Hate Crimes, Racism, and Profanity. They definitely say the word "Fuck" a lot, I could make a drinking game out of how many times they say the word Fuck and get alcohol poisoning in the first episode alone. They show Magic Johnson's sex life and they definitely did not shy away from showing boobs, foreplay, oral sex and intercourse in this series, there was even one split second of one of the players dick showing in the locker room. Now for those who may not know, in 1991 Magic was diagnosed with HIV and he admitted it was due to his sex life during the showtime Lakers run and that's definitely something the show will touch on.
My favorite part of the show were the coaches. Jerry West was originally the coach of the Lakers then backed out before the season started, from there they brought in Jack McKinney who was responsible for the Lakers style of play and what ultimately inspired the NBA's modern style of basketball now. During that regular season, Jack was involved in a Bike accident that had left him in a Coma, from there Paul Westhead had to be the head coach of the Lakers and incorporate Jack's style known as "The System". Paul would struggle in his next couple games and from there he asked Pat Riley to be his assistant coach and the two would go on a major winning stream in the regular season and lead the team to a championship. Now during that time, Jack recovered and this created tension between the coaches and in the Lakers organization. In the end, They chose Paul over Jack which was the right call at the time. The story of the coaches is what I was fully invested into this season and it made for a great story and an entertaining one at that.
Now there is speculation saying that this show was done without consulting Magic Johnson himself or Jeanie Buss, the daughter of Jerry Buss and current president/owner of the Laker's organization. Meaning, these two didn't give their blessings for this show nor did they want it to happen. I don't know if that's 100% true or not, but I think it might be true due to the adult themes and darker side of this show as it does tend to Villainize everyone in the show. I'm not saying its all false, but I feel these were things that Magic and Jeanie didn't want emphasized or I guess remembered about their showtime Lakers run. I do think that there were no heroes in this story, it was all business, fame, and wanting the world. Once again, its a dramatization so I'm sure to an extent most of these things in the show are true, but they're just taken up a few notches for the sake of drama and story telling. I don't think Magic would want people to remember how he got HIV in the first place this badly. Magic does have his own 4-part series on Apple TV called "They Call Me Magic" and he is directly involved with that. I feel that Winning Time is the darker side of Magic's life while "They Call Me Magic" is meant to be more of the positive aspects of his life. Those are my thoughts, the rest is up to you guys to interpret.
Overall, I think the first season was actually pretty good. I don't care for dramas, but I do like Biopics and sports and this was a decent mix of all three. They confirm there will be a season 2 though I don't know where they're gonna go from here. Will they go to 1982 where they won their first championship with Pat Riley as the head coach? Will they fast forward to 1985 where they faced Larry Bird and the Boston Celtics in the NBA finals and won for the first time showing us that legendary rivalry between Magic Johnson and Larry Bird? I guess only time will tell.
putting this into my ratings, I give it:
6.5/10
Season 1 was a decent start to this series and I hope they improve from here. I'll be tuning in to Season 2 when it comes out. In the meantime, I recommend giving Season 1 a watch, if you like drama, you'll like this. If you're a Lakers fan or a basketball fan, I think you'll like this series too.
That's it, see ya!
