Billy’s first name is Ocean.
No one calls him by that name. No one knows that it’s his first name.
It’s Billy. Not Ocean. Not the name that his “dumb hippie junkie mother” gave him. It’s William.
William Cornelius Hargrove.
And nothing else.
Until Ocean gets out. Runs away from Cornelius at night of 4th July, 1985. Bags packed long ago, sitting ready under his bed for a week before this night.
Ocean walks into Max’s Red’s room. Leaves her a key from Camaro and a note with a phone number and his new address. Kisses their forehead, whispering “Sorry. I’ll get you out of here in three years, Red. Promise.”
Ocean sneaks out of the window, passing his bags to Eddie.
“C’mon, Ocean! Faster! Steve is going to be mad, my god. This man has no patience.”
Ocean can hear Steve’s complains, even if the guy was parked three houses away from Ocean’s old house.
“Can’t be any faster with this leg, amigo. Sorry.”
Ocean gets into the car and looks into the back, catching Jonathan’s smile and returns it back.
“It’s the beginning of our new life, Ocean.”
“Can’t wait. And what about you, Stefan? Excited?”
Steve giggles and starts the car.
“Sure am, Ocean. We have a long ride ahead of us. Buckle up.”
Ocean William Alcaraz Castillo.
He can get used to this new name. It’s easy since he likes this one so much more than his… dead name.

Max Mayfield & The Key 🔑
Max finds a key on the floor of her house. Doesn’t know where it’s from or what it’s for. During her investigation, she sees a lock outside Billy’s door.
Her gut tells her to keep the key away from Neil and her mother. When Neil goes apeshit searching for it, she stays quiet. Neil blames Billy first, then Susan.
Then, he asks Max with all the false sweetness of a con-man if she’s seen a key laying around anywhere. She lies.
Neil gets a new key that same day.

The house is parent-free. Billy usually comes out of his room to lift weights, listen to music and put the TV on. He hasn’t.
“I wanna order pizza,” is the first thing that pops into her head and comes out of Max's mouth when she unlocks his door.
Billy sniffs. His eyes and nose are red. Allergies?
“Are you just gonna sit there or do I have to do everything myself?”
He gets up, muttering, “Don’t rush me, Shitbird.”
“Walk faster then, Assface."
Why would Neil keep him locked up like some dog?
"Pepperoni or cheese?" Billy asks her.
"Hmm?"
"Toppings. What toppings do you want?"
"Pepperoni has cheese."
"... Pepperoni it is, then."

Of Couches and Ice Cream
Steve had gone for a grocery run for himself and insisted to also get some stuff for the Mayfield home, he knew Susan was tired, working herself to the bone. Billy was adamant he didn't need coddling, but also resigned himself to Steve's help. Billy was stubborn, but so was Steve. And Billy knew he wasn't at peak condition yet — or if he'd ever be again — tiring easily, with shaky hands that sometimes wouldn't hold a grip as they should.
He didn't mind helping them, even more so after the chain of events following the 4th of July fireworks. He steps into the trailer, with one bag in hand, he was ready to greet them when he notices Max and Billy asleep on the couch. A long finished movie forgotten on the TV. Max had her head on Billy's shoulder, her legs tucked under covers close to her chest. Billy's head was resting on top of hers, an arm around her, his legs resting on the coffee table.
Steve wanted to commit the moment to memory. He knew they had grown closer after everything, but he also knew neither of the siblings would admit to it just yet. They snark at each other, but remain within hugging distance. He understood that, the terrifying idea of loss compelling you to unconsciously keep them closer. An assurance that they're fine, and that you can keep them safe.
He definitely got it. Max called him clingy once, but it was only halfhearted, she knew why he did it. Both of them intimately aware of how terrifying it had been, seeing Billy unresponsive in the cold tiles of Starcourt. The equally agonizing weeks in the hospital bed. Both equally greatful to have him home, softer yet somehow bitchier than ever. But alive and healing.
He tries to not make any noise, but he feels tiny inside the trailer which leads to the grocery bag on the floor and his knee hurting. Billy and Max wake, confused at first, holding each other tighter. Steve couldn't help the fond smile on his face.
"I was goin to say something like 'welcome home pretty boy' but you startled us out of our nap, so no warm welcomes for you." Billy says, voice hoarse from sleep.
"No stealth to be seen." Max says.
"I was trying to be all nice you know, getting this ice cream that will definitely clog our arteries, but I'm going to eat this on my own." He says picking up the pot from the floor and holding it close to his chest.
"I'm not apologizing. You can't bribe me with ice cream. I'm not 6." Max says rolling her eyes.
"I can be persuaded." Billy says. Max is about to protest, clearly offended that he'd so easily give in to sugary temptations. But Billy continues before she can.
"If... The sailor uniform is part of the package." Billy grins wide and licks his lips.
"That can be arranged." Steve replies without thinking for even a little bit.
Max's face contorts in absolute disgust. "The two of you are so gross."
"Keep saying that Max, I can make it worse." Billy threatens.
"Nope, I'm out of here." She gets up from the couch and Billy starts talking, louder the closer she gets to her room.
"You know Steve does this thing with his tongue-" Steve is blushing, and he just covers Billy's mouth.
"That's enough you menace."
"You like this menace."
"Yeah, yeah I do."

Okay but imagine Steve and Billy start dating just after Billy and Max agree to ‘start over’, and then they have sibling fights in front of him, full of cathartic yelling and stupid insults that go on for longer than they should because Neil is gone and Susan’s at work
And once Max slams her bedroom door shut, ending the argument, Steve feels this weird mix of anxiety and jealousy because what the fuck was that about??
He’s an only child so he doesn’t know how vicious those fights can be, but also how necessary they are at the same time. Billy lights a cigarette and mumbles something that sounds like ‘annoying ass little sister’ around the filter but says nothing else, not until he mentions that he’s hungry once he’s finished it.
Steve is dumbfounded when Billy gets up to knock on Max’s door barely ten minutes later and asks if she wants to go to Dairy Queen with him and Steve.
And then he actually sputters when Max comes out, pouting and telling Billy that he owes her a cone while stuffing her feet inside her Vans, like they hadn’t been screaming in each other’s faces moments ago.
he becomes weirdly fascinated by it and eventually becomes used to it, to a point where he hides a smile behind his hand whenever they bicker and argue in his presence.
