Handmaid’s Tale, trop excellent pour moi.

Au premier abord, Handmaid’s Tale présentait un synopsis qui attisa réellement ma curiosité. Découvrir des mondes dystopiques et totalitaires a toujours été une réelle manière d’attirer mon regard sur un projet, que celui-ci soit une série, mais aussi un film ou même un roman. J’aime cette sensation que le fantastique et la science-fiction créés, une stimulation de mon imaginaire et de véritables réflexions. Et avec Handmaid’s Tale, les stimulations sont arrivées très vite, beaucoup trop vite et beaucoup trop fortes même.

Les critiques concernant la série sont unanimes ou presque et il s’avère qu’après seulement un seul épisode visionné, je les considère totalement justifiés. Les effets visuels offerts par la réalisation sont tout bonnement bluffants et immersifs à un point comme j’ai rarement pu expérimenter personnellement tandis que les performances du casting, Elisabeth Moss en tête de liste, font réellement froid dans le dos. Mais c’est aussi en partie pour toutes ces raisons que j’ai finalement décidé d’abandonner la série dès l’apparition du générique de ce premier épisode.

Car malgré toutes ces belles qualités, ce sont elles aussi qui servent à dépeindre la dystopie complètement malsaine et effrayante d’Atwood. Chaque scène est constituée de manière méticuleuse, chaque costume, angle de caméra, effet de lumière et interprétation sert avant tout la mise en place de cet univers lugubre pour offrir un impact sur le spectateur. 

Le scénario, lui, met en avant l’histoire de femmes au sein d’une politique jouant de cruauté et d'oppression envers elle, ces dernières se soumettant simplement à ce régime totalement injuste ou tentant au péril de leur vie de se lever contre celui-ci.

La terreur que vivent les différents protagonistes au sein de cette série est telle qu’elle m’a mis réellement mal à l’aise. Je ne pensais réellement pas tomber sur un monde aussi sombre, empli d’une telle tension. Je n’ai absolument rien contre Handmaid’s Tale, à vrai dire je loue de nombreuses qualités à celle-ci. C’est justement parce qu’elle ne réussit que trop bien dans ce qu’elle essaie de faire qu’elle en devient impossible a visionner pour moi.

Hulu Promoted the Handmaid’s Tale with 140 Sculptures of Women in New York

Hulu’s third season of its hit show Handmaid’s Tale recently started airing, the show is based in a dystopian future where women are subjected to servitude. To promote Handmaid’s Tale third season, Hulu together with CNN’s branded content studio Courageous decided to tackle real-life gender inequality.  Out of the 150 statues across New York City, only five are of women. In March the city stated that it will address the issue by adding new ones honouring Billie Holiday, Elizabeth Jennings Graham, Helen Rodríguez Trías, and Katherine Walker. Now Hulu is calling out this disparity in female to male statues with their latest campaign for Handmaid’s Tale.

About Hulu’s Art Show to Promote the Third Season of Handmaid’s Tale

Hulu together with Courageous CNN’s branded content studio staged a public art show to promote the third season. The campaign was created to highlight a real-life example of gender inequality. Hulu’s art show for Handmaid’s Tale involved placing mirrored statues of female figures at Madison Square Park.  They placed 140 statues to close the gap and highlight how women are being ignored. The statues were nearly invisible from far away but those who came close saw a reflection of themselves. Their reflection symbolized the potential they have to shape history. At the art show, we also saw women dressed in the Handmaid’s Tale iconic costumes. They were stationed next to the statutes and shared info about Gertrude Stein in Bryant Park and Golda Meir

The Minds Behind the Campaign Speak about the Campaign

Michal Shapira the svp of news content partnerships at Turner spoke to Adweek about the campaign.  According to him, the team behind the campaign thought that it was really unfortunate and a stat that should be brought to light, given the history and the countless ways that women have helped shape the country and fought for equality. He also explained how from afar, it represented how fleeting the representation of women can be. He talked about how up close, it gives people a chance to see themselves and It’ll remind them that they might not be able to shape the past, but we can certainly shape the future. I started watching this show a week ago ... I know, I’m late and I definitively should have watched it sooner !

First things first : I’m totally obsessed with this story. I am and will always be a “fangirl”. But I have good reasons to love this show so much : a complex story that we understand progressively, charismatic characters that we love or hate, and a beautifull cinematography : that’s all I’m asking for !

Second : this story makes me freaking out. We should not take democracy for granted, and I am not even talking about gender equality. Fear and despair can lead to dramatic situations, as described in here.

I hope to tell you more about this show very soon : now I have to watch another episode !
