Haiku poet specializing in plants (Essay)
Tumblr media
Geometry
I wonder if you master it
Spurge
It has been over 30 years since I started writing haiku. Initially, the subjects were wide-ranging, but plants have been the main focus for the past three years. The biggest reason for this is his style of presenting haiku poems with photographs.
When I was working on Japanese SNS, I belonged to one of the communities called ``Photo Gogyoka'' and created poems with tanka divided into 5 lines and a relaxed character limit. I learned that. When I applied this idea to haiku, I adopted this format because it allows me to express details that are difficult to imagine with just 17 characters.
However, I don't dislike animals, but they move so much that my photography skills can't capture them. No wonder there are so few haiku about birds. It is also difficult to express the contact between people's hearts and the depth of people's psychology. However, I can photograph plants and project my heart into them. I have much knowledge about plants.
Combining photography and haiku is a double-edged sword, favoring one direction while abandoning the other. ``People can only do what they are capable of doing.'' This is probably true. Today I will walk with my camera and hunt for plants.

Monday April 17.
National Haiku Poetry Day.
Sometimes less really is more. And other times a lot less is a lot more. Which is why today, this Monday April 17, we are joining in the celebrations for National Haiku Poetry Day, as devised and implemented by The Haiku Foundation back in 2012. Because things don't get a lot more more for a lot less less than the old art of Haiku, in which a frog leaping in a pond, the profundity of a drop of few, the light of a candle, a blooming poppy, a howling wind, or the taste of rain can be distilled and expressed with such compelling and elusive intrigue—and such economy of words. These are works which require very little time at all in the act of reading, but sit and linger and echo for a long time thereafter. They resonate, in the truest sense of the word. Tumblr being Tumblr, the writing community here is home to more than a few talented Haiku poets, as you can see for yourself over at #haiku poetry.
And Tumblr being Tumblr, of course, this community is home to one particular talent notable in the art of Haiku: @the-haiku-bot, a bot which, in their own words: "Beep boop! I look for accidental haiku posts. Sometimes I mess up." This is a bot that can prise moments of poetry from even the most innocuous post, and, we would contend, makes the perfect way to celebrate #haiku poetry and today's national commemoration. Trans sex? 17 syllables? Your aunt? Long rants? The Turing test? There is nothing—nothing—this mysterious little bot cannot accomplish.

You don’t meet souls. You don’t go around looking for soul connections. It isn’t a choice and you recognise them immediately. And know that they’re rare. Not anyone you connect with is a soul connection. A true soul connection is immediate, mutual and life altering.

Short autumn (verse)
Tumblr media
Autumn leaves of Metasequoia
The autumn of 2023 was short.
With summer days remaining until mid-November,
It was only two weeks of autumn before it got cold.
At this rate, after a warm winter,
A short spring will come,
It will be a long summer.
I took two showers a day this summer
I survived the heat
Next year will be a longer and hotter summer.
In addition to responding to the body,
I am a haiku poet.
I mainly use my vision. that's why
Spring and autumn have the most haiku material.
It's a big problem to be short of them.
I can't write haiku, can I?
I will not contribute to global warming as much as possible.
As long as the world doesn't change
I will have to quit being a haiku poet.
