There's a growing frustration and awareness of the ways that betta fish are exploited by large companies for profit.
Many individuals and organizations have been pushing back against misconceptions about their needs and raising awareness of their neglect by large corporations where they are often treated as just merchandise.
(Bettas need 5+ gal, a filter, heater, and lots of environmental enrichment like plants and hiding spots.)

Do you think that Marina (owned by Hagen Group) should manufacture betta fish aquariums 1 gallon and under?
If you'd like to take action and ask them to stop manufacturing these harmful kits, fill out the "get in touch with us" form on the Hagen Group website: http://usa.hagen.com/web_to_case These kits create low-quality conditions for fish to endure. They are too small to safely place a heater or filter, and there's not enough space to add enrichment to make the environment stimulating. (Bettas need 5+ gal.) The descriptions for these kits reveal how Marina treats bettas like decorations and exploits their resiliency to mislead consumers and maximize their own opportunities for profit. They make caring for betta fish seem like an inconvenience. The EZ Care Kit is described as a "...no mess, no stress maintenance solution," and "the aquarium's small size takes up very little space and its chic design allows it to blend in nicely with a variety of household or office settings..." None of these tanks are designed with betta fish welfare in mind.
